He's awesome. Knows what he's talking about and is really helpful if you have questions. He uses examples that are relatable so that it's easier to understand concepts. I definitely recommend him!
Great guy! I would recommend him for ECO 211 because his tests aren't too bad and if you are not good at graphs in econ. like me...then take him!! He does not have much of that at all in the tests. Also attendance is quite a bit of your grade so be sure to go to class regularly for easy points.
He is awesome. After this class I am thinking of getting an Econ major. Great prof and take him for any class you can. I am taking FIN 320 with him this winter(09).
One of the best professors I've ever had. By far the most caring and understanding. He won't let you blow off his class but he is willing to work with you so each student can do their best. I enjoyed coming to his class.
TAKE HIS class it will help you in life regardless of your major
Great Professor! Best core class at Seidman. Tests are straight-forward, he knows the subject and is excellent at teaching it. Watch out for the final- material at the end of the year was not covered as well.
Dr. Hoogstra is a class act
Awesome prof! He made the class very interesting and easy to understand. Would love to take another class with him.
He's not very sure about what he's teaching and constantly doubles back on what he says. Hes a very nice guy though, and really wants his students to succeed. Collected homework once, and attendance was 10 days out of the semester (counts of 10% of grade. Tests can be hard but always gives out a study guide
Definitely take him for FIN320! He is one of the best profs I've had at GVSU. He even says other profs make you learn/memorize formulas & he teaches how to use the calculator. He's always relating things to the real world too. Which helps a ton. I'm not getting the best grade but that's my own fault and not his at all. Great guy!
Overall, very good professor. Simplifies the book and you don't learn huge long equations. Sometimes wasn't able to get sufficient notes from lectures though. Make sure to take notes even if he says it's not on the test because it does tend to be on the test.
If you are required to take this FIN 320, TAKE HOOGSTRA!! By no means does this mean it's an easy class, but he was able to show the class easier methods of calculating with the finance calculator than what the text would show. Also, homework out of the text is required but it's easy. You'll also be graded on attendence and participation.
Professor Hoogstra is an awesome prof. He is very approachable and a nice person in general. Very knowledgeable in his field and can teach it thoroughly. Incorporates world events in discussion. Class is structured around the book and powerpoints, he has random attendance checks and has a good amount of extra credit. I would suggest to anyone!
Best professor I've had at GV! He is genuinely concerned with students learning and always uses examples to help enforce the material. I would definitely recommend taking him. Homework was given weekly but was not horrible to complete. Tests were straight forward if you attend class, read the book, and take good notes from his powerpoints.
The best professor at Grand Valley. He is so easy to listen to, and makes you look forward to going to class. Class difficulty is mild, the tests are the only possible difficulty... Homework you just have to "try". If you take this class, take no one but Hoogstra.
easy to understand. he could teach a bird finance if he had to. very smart guy, and excellent teacher! you will know finance after this class. he records the lectures and posts them online for later reference too.
one of the BEST professors I have ever had. He takes time to help you, gives you study guides like a week before the tests(earlier if you ask), really focuses on helping the students figure out the class as well as what you want to do career-wise. Excellent professor
good professor. likes to talk about himself and what hes done in life. tests are easy, right off the review sheet
Very helpful prof. Genuinely concerned about his students and goes above and beyond to help. He also likes to teach about your future and preparations for it.
Very helpful for a class I was expecting to be very difficult for me
Best Finance/Economics Professor at Seidman! Extremely helpful, gives study guides, teaches you what is on the test, and will meet with you outside of class.
Best prof. I have ever had! He is such a nice guy and makes the class interesting. Take fin 320 with him if you can
Excellent professor, great class. All I can say
great teacher. goes out of his way to try and help students understand the material. teaches you exactly what will be on the tests and is very knowledgeable in the material and loves to teach it. most interesting and enjoyable class i've had at gvsu so far!
Best Professor at GVSU by far. This guy is a straight up genius, knows everything. I could listen to him all day long. Take Hoogstra!!
Great guy. Even recorded his lectures and posted them online so you could listen again later. Has remarkable real world experience too
He is a great professor. He teaches us the short cuts when doing problem which is nice for non-finance majors. His exams are hard but he puts a nice curve on them. He does really well explaining some concepts but not very well on others which became frustrating. Overall it was a good class
Professor Hoogstra is the best prof I have ever had. He presents info and material in a very easy to understand way. He has great real life expereinces and has a vast wealth of knowledge in so many things. I would tell all types of students to take this guy no matter what their learning styles are.
The best teacher I have had at GVSU. He is a financial genius and just an overall good guy. Highly reccommended
He's a financial genius! He promised that every single class he will teach us something that we will actually need to know for life. Records his lectures in case you missed a class which is really helpful. Teaches a class in a way that you will remember all of the material.
This guy is the bomb.com. If you take anyone else for finance I weep for you because I only hear bad things. He is ridiculously smart with finance and will even help you gather yours in real life. Love this guy you have to take it.
Awesome professor and a very interesting class, prof was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, learned a lot and can actual use what i learned in real life. Highly recommend this class
Really great professor! Teaches you how to use finance in real world situations. Assignments are due each week but are relatively easy and he goes over it in class. Doesn't always teach the subject before the hw but it is graded on effort. Study hard for the exams and you will do fine.
This is the BEST professor at GVSU. He is so helpful and very encouraging to your success in your career, even if you are not a finance major. I recommend taking him - HE IS THE BEST!!!
One of the best professors at GVSU. Highly knowledgeable and very helpful
Probably one of the best professors that I've had! I was really dreading this class but he puts things in terms anyone can understand. He is a very knowledgeable business person and very nice and friendly. If you get the chance, take his class!!
Great professor and great class. Very nice person.
An amazing teacher! Is will to do anything to help you succeed and has so much real life knowledge! wish there were more teachers like this.
Hoogstra is an excellent teacher that brings real world knowledge to the class. He is a bit arrogant at times, but overall is much better than other FIN teachers at GV. Takes attendance ten random times, goes through hw thoroughly the next day, and teaches the actual importance of investing. Tests are a bit hard, but nothing too brutal.
Class consists of lecture, hw, and 4 tests including the final. The hw is usually around 10 questions over each chapter and he gives you credit if you do them, not based on accuracy. His tests can be somewhat difficult, i recommend studying the chapters from the book. Overall, great Prof and I hope i get to take him again.
He is so helpful and has a lot of real world experience and knowledge. He goes above and beyond to make sure you understand the material. I was not looking forward to this class but ended up changing to finance major after having him and talking with him. Highly recommended. Study for tests and go to class and you won't have a problem.
How to get an A - B in this class(1) Listen to his lectures while you study for exams on Itunes U. You'll notice he'll tell the class a few answers / questions (2) STUDY BLUE has flashcards of previous tests, he changes wording / numbers but the principles are the same. (3) Do HW! only grades on effort. (4) GO, takes random attendance
Good teacher, makes the class easier than it could be... Still somewhat tough class. Great guy very helpful and knowledgeable.
He is a finance BADASS. Take him.
Great Professor.
He will tell you what it is, but his exams have weirdly worded questions which are confusing and many students get them wrong because of that. Don't memorize the book's terms. Only a few calculation problems. He gives you credit for doing the problems correct or not, but this is not an efficient way to learn Finance.
Best teacher I have ever had. I would highly recommend going to his class consistently. You will gain a lot of knowledge in Finance and also in life. You would be a fool not to take him.
Good all around.
Eric is a really great guy. I went to him throughout the semester for not only help concerning his class, but for life help, too. His class is kinda tough, because it is finance but he makes it as easy as he can. Homework is effort based. He gives you all the information you'll need for exams during lecture, but he won't hand you an A.
Not a good professor as far as actually teaching. Tells stories during the entire class then when it is time for the exam, you are left on your own to study out of th book. Exam is polar opposite from what is covered in class. This class could have been taught online because going to class was honestly a waste of time. He is such a nice guy though
Great professor! If you have any interest in real estate take this course, he is very knowledgeable and has lots of real world experiences to help you along the way. Test can be tough, all mutli-choice and final exam is 100 multi-choice questions. Required readings every week and a big 15+ page report due at the end of the semester. Great challenge
Hoogstra is a great guy. He really cares about you as a student, and he will give you life advice that will actually work. He is also a decent professor, BUT you basically need to write down everything he says. Tests are hard as hell, and the whole class was only worth 100 points.
Nice guy. Tests are tough but fair; based directly on the reading; immediate feedback. Does exam review with exam in-hand. Big paper, but there's no wrong answer. Short presentation. Little HW. Rambles during lecture, but it's often interesting. Gets behind easily: We flew through five chapters in the last class. Need 96% to get an A.
I did not like the way Hoogstra taught this class. It is all over the place with not structure. He also does not give proper notes or write enough on the board. He is nice but arrogant. The class has very few points so It's hard to do well. His exam reviews are terrible because they aren't in depth enough. Get ready to work your butt off.
Professor Hoogstra is a nice enough guy, but if you are shaky in Finance, I would try to find someone else. He has a hard time grasping the concept of not everyone understands finance like he does. His tests are directly from his lectures so write EVERYTHING he says down. Exams are hard, so study in advance. 100 points in the class so don't mess up
Solid prof. Lectures are pretty boring, but he gives good real-life examples. Doesn't always explain things enough. Must read the textbook in order to fully understand the material. Homework on every chapter. HW helps give a better understanding. The final project covers a lot of material, so give yourself a few weeks. Tests are all multiple choice
I took Hoogstra for both fin320 and 350. FIN 350 had an individual project that seems pretty daunting, for this utilize his office hours. He is very willing to help and knows his stuff. You will need to read for 350. 320 is pretty straight forward, and if you pay attention will do fine. Hoogstra is my all time favorite prof and cares about students
dont take this class. it is literally a class for him to boast and brag about his real estate investments. He teaches almost nothing. He also is one of those professors that will try to make you get the question wrong. know the material inside and out because the material is so relative. dont rely on the paper as a grade saver it doesnt help much.
This class isn't difficult, but it's A LOT of work! Don't take in the summer! You cover all 23 chapters of the book, and have homework on each one. There's also 4 exams plus a final project with a 15 page paper and presentation. He is very willing to help, if you ask. Just go to this office hours!
His teaching methods are very minimal. Writes and explains too fast. You better know every single bit of info in each chapter along with multiple scenarios for each equation. Hed be better if he had worksheets for students to follow along with for each scenario. He is also way too into himself.
Good prof overall but he lectures heavy on the math side of things even though his test MC test you on the super tiny details about the conceptual stuff. If you go to class and pay attention you'll get good base notes but for the love of God READ THE BOOK otherwise you'll have a hard time with the concept based multiple choice on the exams.
Hoogstra knows what he is talking about but struggles a bit to get the info out in a way the student can understand. Tests are graded very heavy and are tough with little guidance. Read the chapters and take good notes, they will help much more than going to lectures. Dont worry much about the final presentation, but the paper can boost your grade
He's a nice guy but this class was tough, don't take if you aren't a fin major. He expects you to understand the concepts perfectly and be able to apply them to diff. situations... which is very hard when you barely understand the general concept. Exams are 30 mult. choice & 10 ish written problems (no partial credit) which sucks. Finalimpossible
Professor Hoogstra is a great teacher with a lot of knowledge and experience in finance. He loves to share his personal stories about the companies he owns, which are pretty interesting. I think he does a great job of teaching and is happy to answer any questions you have.
Eric is a pretty good professor. He goes over all the homework in class which is really helpful, but his exams can be tough. Study for them and come to class and you'll pass.
Professor Hoogstra really knows his stuff and has good examples to help you learn. Sometimes doesn't explain things very well, but he is extremely willing to cover topics until you understand, just ask. Tests can be difficult, but if you prepare and do the homework you should be alright overall. Solid choice whether or not you are a finance major.
He's a good guy and he really wants his students to succeed, but the way he lectures is just so chaotic. He mostly just talks the whole time and then every so often will write a word or a number down as he's explaining so it makes taking notes impossible, but he records all his lectures. I ended up teaching myself a lot of the material though.
Hoogstra is an excellent professor that provides a lot of real world experience (something GVSU professors often lack). Exams can be though, so you will need to read and understand the concepts. In business, I would prefer to have someone who teaches from experience as opposed to someone who teaches straight from the book.
So many tests, 3 during the semester and 1 final. 75% of grade are test. All multiple choice relating nothing to lectures. A 15 page paper worth 10%. And 23 chapter assignments all worth 5 points and you can say anything as long as they look like something.. oh and don't skip there are 6 attendance days worth 10 points each
Overall I would recommend this class for an elective. You have HW due every week (book required), he randomly takes attendance for points so you need to go, a 15 page essay and solo presentation, 4 exams which can be very difficult if you dont understand whats going on in class. But it was very useful if you are considering buying a home/investing
Hoogstra is just like all of the other reviews on here. A good guy but the lectures don't correlate well with the exams, so get ready to teach yourself a lot of info. His exams are tough but he gives you a study guide. He expects you to be able master the concepts and apply them in different scenarios. Overall a great guy and I would take again.
Professor Hoogstra is knowledgable on Real Estate but would rather talk about himself than actually teach the material. This is the first A- I have received in 2 years of college because he grades on an impossible scale. 23 chapters of homework, a 15-20 page paper, presentation, and 4 tests. You must read the textbook to understand the material.
Do not take Hoogstra. 75% of your grade is exams and another 10% on the final paper. All he does is brag about how great he is and does not relate lectures to the exams at all. Only way to do well on the exams is to read the book. He does not teach at all. I graduated with a 3.9 and got my first B in his class.
2nd class I've had with Hoogstra and his enthusiasm for the material makes the lectures SO interesting. He is very willing to help and gives great career advice. Reading the book makes the exams a breeze. The project teaches you a lot and isn't difficult at all if you use time management. This class provides valuable info you can use in life.
Had an in-person lecture once a week and if you missed he posted a video online to keep up. Those videos seemed more thought out than the lectures. He really cared about making sure his students learned the material. Connect homework every week and a couple quizzes and tests throughout the semester, one group project at the end. I would take him!
He is very knowledgeable and passionate in finance. The course is heavy in content and difficult but he makes the material easy to understand with a lot of practice problems in class. Beware he calls exams quizzes and these exams are usually pretty big.
Eric is very self centered, we get behind on class because all he does is talk about himself. The final project is hardly outlined anywhere, and he makes it hard to understand or catch up on. If you have to miss class for some reason and something important is covered or an announcement is made he will not make the announcement anywhere else.
I love this guy. He's so nice and wants his students to succeed. He comes into class with a smile on his face and listens to his students when they need help. His lectures are great in explaining how to do the homework, but if that isn't enough he also uploads videos explaining each problem. I found his class very enjoyable and would recommend.
This was a hard class. I recommend getting supplemental help. The exams are very difficult with some trick questions. If you arent in class every day, no excuses, you will fail participation. Although, he has taped lectures online.
What can I say this professor is one of the best at GVSU. He knows what he is talking about and works in what he teaches. He wants you to use the information in this class to be successful in life. Truly, one of the best profs and best classes in Seidman
Great professor who offers valuable life advice. Great stories make lectures interesting and memorable. NEED TO TAKE
He is clearly very knowledgable on the subject of real estate and real estate investing and he was very good at teaching it. Attendance was taken at six random points throughout the semester for points. There is a semester long project with a presentation and paper due at the end. Overall, I really liked his class.
Great prof. Made 320 online so easy. Exams are on respondus and hw is minimal. He is very organized which makes the class a stress off everyones back. Exams are mc and fill in blank with no SA. Would take him again, 10/10 no complaints.
Took this class during spring semester online. I am a straight A honor's college student and have never failed a test in my life until this course. It's been an awful experience, and I am ecstatic to drop it even having paid thousands of dollars just to learn basically nothing
BEST PROF I'VE HAD AT GVSU. Seriously never thought I would say that about a class I nearly failed but he has been so accommodating to my struggles in the class and goes out of his way to make sure his students are set up for success. Reading homework each week but doesn't take long at all, 4 exams that are all based off definitions. 1 big project.
Very intelligent teacher and clearly knows the content. I found his presentations to be dry and often unimportant so be prepared to use the book to learn and prepare for tests.
This was actually FIN 380. This class is SO much work. Only take this if you actually want to become a CFP. It is required to be a lot of work so it makes sense but overall I liked the class and did good. Not graded super hard but there is a TON of work. Most work heavy of any class I have ever taken.
Took this class online this summer and professor was definitely knowledgeable and has experience in real estate. Insanely long lectures of 5-6 hours a week, and that doesn't include the reading or working on the 20 page paper due at the end of the semester. Class is definitely better when it is not accelerated!
The most useful business class I have taken in my life, very practical content and general teaching on real business.
Professor Hoogstra is a great instructor who makes finance feel practical and engaging. He brings real world investing and real estate experience into the classroom, which makes the material much easier to understand. His explanations are clear, his examples are helpful, and he creates a very positive learning environment.
