Awesome guy. He is really cool and very willing to help anyone. Comes off really hard at first, but as long as you do not get behind you will be fine. Great Teacher, and a great person.

Good teacher, likes what he does. If you go to class and read the book, you will get at the very least a B. He has old examples of his exams/final enxam on his website that help out alot. Hovanitz is a better choice than Brooks.

This guy is boring, and he sure likes "death and destruction." But if you want to take an easy science class, take this one. All you have to do is read the chapters and go to his website where he has all the test questions. He also drops your lowest test score, and you only take 3 tests.

This guy makes earth sciences very interesting. Take any class, especially the trips out to Death Valley or his Earthquakes class. He is awesome and extremely fair.

Loves what he does and is willing to help you pass the class. You can meet with him during office hours before a test or to go over a quiz. I found this to be very helpful on both the midterm and final.Hovanitz is a MUCH better choice then brooks!!

He actually made the subject interesting. Even with his corney jokes. Make sure to read the book!

He was very friendly and quite easy. Very excited about his subject. Don't sit in the front rows he spits sometimes when he lectures.

Dr. Hovanitz is a great teacher. He makes the class alot more interesting than it should be and is pretty lenient in exams, he gives you 130 questions, but it is only graded out of 100.

This is not an exciting class regardless of who teaches it but Prof H makes it fun. He is very knowledgeable and he gives you 130 points possible for a 100 point test. Lots of extra credit.

I took both his regular and lab class because this prof is by far one of the best I've ever had. If you don't like to work for your grade then don't take him. You will learn the material and as long as you pay attention you are fine. He posts past exams and class notes online and will do anything he can to help out; you have to seek him out though.

Dr. H is a FABULOUS teacher!! He made a really boring subject so fun! He is really helpful and funny, and really loves talking about geology. I even took a mini semester class of his because he is so awesome. His tests are available online to study with before, so it's not hard to get a good grade.

Eric is a pretty good teacher. Maybe it was all those butter cookies he handed out during lab but class was never very hard for me. You need to study and really understand what he's talking about to do well. I had to memorize tons of stuff for his class. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.

If you get on his bad side good luck getting out of the grave you buried yourself in. He likes his students to go into office hour. He can be a huge ahole at times. He is always right by the way. Show up to class, and act like you care and you should do fine. 3 tests, 1 dropped, a quiz every class period, and some extra credit oppurtunity.

He's very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject. He cracks jokes and encourages participation to keep people interested. He genuinely wants people to learn and will help after class and during office hours. Class isn't to hard and lots of extra credit available. Never looked forward to going to class until his. He's funny and goofy and made me laugh every class. He dressed up for halloween which i hadnt seen a teacher do since the 5th grade. Gotta study but he's got study guides for all the exams which are pretty much are exams. Got a B in the class

I had this guy for my geology lab. He's extremely funny and passionate about his subject. He made what could of been 3 hours of hell a week not so bad!

He's really funny and smart. Just go to class every week and study what's on the study guide.

I took Hovanitz a couple semesters ago and now looking back, I have not enjoyed a class yet as much as I did his. His class is hard only if you make it hard. If you pay attention and study, you will do great. He has a funny sense of humor and presents things very clearly. Take the field trip to the La Brea Tar pits with him, its a great experience.

HE TRULY ENJOYS TEACHING AND LOVES ANYONE WHO PARTICIPATES EVEN IF ITS EVERY SO OFTEN.HE TAKES THAT INTO CONSIDERATION AFTER THE FINAL EXAM WHICH HELPED MY GRADE. PAY ATTENTION AND TAKE GOOD NOTES.HE GIVES ALOT OF INFO BUT IF YOU USE THE EXAM QUESTIONS DURING LECTURE AS WELL AS OTHER GOOD NOTES AND STUDY THOSE FOR TESTS AND QUIZS YOU CANT DO BAD.

I LOVE THIS TEACHER!! Eric is a great teacher. I will take his class just for the fun of it. He knows what he teaching and he keeps it interesting. Before class print out the study questions and answer them as he teaches. Answer and ask questions, it can add up to a lot of points. Overall, probably the best teacher I have had.

Great class! It's a little intimidating at first but if you stick with it it's not so bad. Print out the study questions ahead of time and answer them during lecture, it saves you a lot of time. He's strict and has a weird but fun sense of humor. If you ask questions he'll appreciate it and adds points for it.

Very funny!!! Very helpful and organized. Has old exams on his web site, this was a great help for me as I got the answers from my notes from class. Extra credit for tutoring!! One of the best prof i've had, a joy! I now have a very high interest for these subjects!!!A+A+A+

Class is not the most facinating, but Mr. H definitely tries his best to keep everyone awake and attentive. He does this by telling many (and I mean many) corny jokes. Quizzes once a week, but they aren't extrememly difficult. Midterm and final are kind of challenging, but his tests always have extra credit opportunities.

Very repetitious!mostly with stories and stupid jokes.If you can handle him he is a great teacher. i learned A LOT from his class!just do the study guides and ask him questions and you will do fine. There is a quiz every week!

Weekly quizzes are easy, except he likes to put in a few trick questions, just review when you get to class. Lots of extra credit opportunities! 2 exams 1 final no homework. Very good teacher.

i believe him to be a great teacher. i had him in fall of '09 and he actually had my full attention. im no science major but his class althought at night had me interested. most stories have relevant meaning to the subject. notes are key and class goes by rather fast! (Most days) id say "TAKE HIM"

Well, to his credit, Mr. H has really gotten me into his subject! Its cool :). He is a good teacher. Don't be late, quizes are once a week and you get them back the next week. I read the book, but lecture notes are on his website. He provides snacks in lab! He gives participation points for Geology news. There r field trips & take home exams.

Absolutely amazing teacher. Always go to class and take notes. Participate and you will be amazed at how much easier the class is. Goofy and cynical sense of humor, just the way I like it. He really tries to help students succeed but leaves it up to them ultimately. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Easy A+. Note to slackers, look elsewhere.

I did not take Intro to Geology, but his review for the first two weeks helps a lot. We have quizzes, don't worry their only 10 questions that come from the lecture from the Tuesday before. He removes 3 lowest quiz grades out of 12 quizzes. He also removes 1 exam out of 2. I loved his class and especially the field trips. DO NOT TAKE OUT CELLPHONES

Super funny, super nice, loved his stories. Made learning about the earth fun and interesting. Make sure you take down all notes, draw pics if you have to, attend ALL classes, and do not try to cram. Trust me class is not boring!

He is a nice professor and gave us candy during tests and labs to wake us up. I took him for lab too, which I recommend because it helps with what you learn in lecture.

The quizzes and exams are almost exclusively from the lectures. Make sure to study the practice exams from his website. He's helpful if you ask. Don't talk in class, and turn your cell phone off. He hates both.

Prof Hovanitz was my favorite teacher! Very passionate about the subject which made the class enjoyable. Take notes in class everyday and you will get an A. He is such a doll!! Awesome, awesome teacher. I recommend to EVERYONE to take him!

Great professor for earth science and geology. A lot of stories that back what is being taught in class, with plenty of humor. Incredibly helpful, but being a professional student is what will help you the most. The more relevant questions that are asked, the more exciting class gets. I highly recommend this professor.

Mr. Hovanitz is very passionate about this subject. The class itself can be dull at times. Quizzez once a week, 3 exams + 1 final. Provides study guides, go to office hours he will literally answer any question you have! Study the questions you'll ace all tests! Pretty interesting class.

hovanitz is a sweet old dude. he totally loves teaching and his tests are reasonable. to pass this class use his website and use the practice questions. big help fer sures. he likes to joke and is kinda strange. overall he is awwsomee.

Overall, Hovanitz makes the class easy and a lot of fun. I was sad on the few occasions he missed class (which was due to his mother's health). He readily offers help and encourages students to approach him for help with understanding lectures. The tests would be hard *if* Hovanitz counted every question towards one's grade, but he doesn't, so...

I got an A and I never even bought the book. It's easy to pass this class if you pay attention in class, all of his notes are online so you don't even have to take notes.

You REALLY have to pay attention. His class was no joke. The power points, book, study guide, and the extra stuff he would teach us would all be in the exam. He makes it so that you really have to understand the material in order to get a good grade. I honestly don't know how i even passed his class with a B...

I can tell you right now that the only way to pass is to go to class. Honestly I had to take this twice and received a B my second time around. He posts old exam questions on his website and his questions don't change so as long as you do the work you'll pass. He means well he really does and he's quite helpful!

He does not give easy A's. But an A is possible if you attend each class, take good notes, take the practice exams and take advantage of the huge amount of XC he offers (2 points per quiz and up to 20 per exam + class participation) Go to his office... he will literally give you the right answers, he just wants to see effort. loved his class.

A tip: Professor Hovanitz posts previous exams on his website. If you study directly from those, you will receive an A on any exam in class. Also, he gives a TON of extra credit/ bonus questions, which are what got me through the class with an A. But, even with all of this, the class is still very difficult. Be sure you're willing to study.

Great funny guy! Quizzes are pretty hard(tricky) and test are the same. Yet, I learn a lot , you definitely need to study for quizzes and test!! Show up to class pay attention and you'll be fine. Make sure you study for quizzes and test! Drops lowest test , final is cumulative though! Pretty hard btw! Really enjoyed the class!!

no homework only tests and quizzes so i suggest reading the book. there was a quiz every monday but it was relatively easy. take good notes and you'll get by, read the book and you'll do good.

He is an amazing teacher who wants his students to be able to learn everything about geology. He is kind of a tough grader but if you study for the tests you should be fine. I did not really use my textbook very often but I made sure I took a lot of notes. His tests always have a written portion but it really isn't hard at all. He is pretty funny!

Hovanitz is awesome. Period. He is smart in GEOLOGY and in all sciences. I took his class course, and his lab course (approx. 5 hours two times a week). Good character, very wise (in everything), and WILL PASS YOU IF YOU TRY! He has all the answers, just ask! He got me into geology (rock expo's, collecting, ect) He will "rock" your semester. LOL.

Fun teacher. Great guy. He knows what he's doing. Read the textbook! Cannot pass with the lecture alone. Go to his office hours if you have further questions. He will help you.

Hovanitz is a great professor. He gives a list of possible exam questions beforehand and if you go to him and talk to him in his office hours about the questions you don't understand, he is happy to help. The lectures can be a little boring but the class overall is super easy if you just put in a little bit of time and effort.

After taking this class I can say without a doubt he has to be one of my top favorite professors at SCC. He's knowledgeable, funny, and really does care about his students. He does have a small quiz once a week but it's very easy. He's an easy grader as well! If you have to take geology take Hovanitz's class!!! You will be happy you did!!!

Loved this class. He is very enthusiastic so class was never boring. Pay attention to his lectures and read the book. ( Has powerpoints on BB ) Not a hard class.

Eric is a great professor. He always makes the subject interesting, and is very passionate about the subject and his students. He's also hilarious, constantly making jokes relevant to the subject, and never takes himself too seriously. Just pay attention to the lectures, pass the daily quizzes (super easy, usually with extra credit) you'll do well.

Great professor and leader to the geology club. If you want to pursue Geology or Earth Science he is the man! Very fair greater and very clear of what he expects of you. Took his Lab would take again.

He's got an old school style but tries to embrace technology. There are lots of quizzes that require reading the text and questions can be tricky. I suggest reading very carefully to avoid being duped. He's a funny guy and not a threat if you're smart. He makes the content accessible but you definitely have to try for this class. Would take again.
