He is obviously very professional and knowledgeable in the New Testament. But his teaching style ran me over.He teaches as if I am on his level which I am not.Iwon't be around for the first test I am dropping the class before it's too late.
Interesting stuff, but class is a lecture, not a discussion.
Very intelligent. Sometimes likes to use "big words", but at least he knows what he's talking about. It seems like tests are going to be a nightmare, but really, they're quite manageable.
Dr. Huntsman knows his stuff very, very well. He is very clear and answers questions very well. He does a very good job of helping you understand the material, though sometimes he seems to spend too much time in one area or another.
Dr. Huntsman is very knowledgeable about the scriptures. But from the beginning, he took a literary aproach rather than spiritual. If you like things like diachronic, synchronic, and existential exegesis, then this is the class for you. He got better.
Ditto everything the previous person said. This was like taking an English class, not a religion class. Nonetheless, Huntsman is very knowledgeable.
I was intimidated at first, but have gradually moved on to a 'very impressed' status. He knows his material and has some great insights. He also has a lot of material to cover in every class, which I think is actually a very positive attribute.
He's a very dynamic lecturer. He approaches the New Testament more from a Classics/Humanistic view, but can be very spiritual as well. Very opinionated, and this can rub some people the wrong way. However, he is very knowledgable, and overall a good, f
A Fabulous teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn a great deal. You have to put some work in, but it's all worth it because you get so much out of it.
Dr. Huntsman was able to provide our class with a stimulating, challenging look at the Book of Mormon this semester. It was only after class had concluded that we discovered his father had passed away while he was teaching the class. Highly professional
This is a very interesting class. It's challenging. A LOT of reading. I question the organization of how he presents the material. It feels really jumpy and random at times. It's the fastest moving class I've had. If you just want to fill A GE, take a class that's not so topically broad.
I love his classes. He takes a very academic approach to learning the Book of Mormon and his class is not easy, but I am learning so much in it.
He goes at a VERY fast pace. He knows too much for his own good. Gives way too much information at once so it goes right over your head. His test are all essay and he has 22 page test review sheets so they're kinda pointless.
New in BoM from ancient texts-very academic and detailed. Expects you to know 20times-literally-as much material as what is tested. Supp/PPT contain all you need to know, it's just that there's a lot. It's not seminary-he bears his testimony rarely, says he generally isn't comfy. Great guy, in MOTAB
just read, and you'll love the class. this guy is hilarious
Prof. Huntsman is a funny guy. His presentations were posted online, which was great. Tests were entirely short answer/essay, so you'd better know your stuff, but they were pretty much straight from his notes. Reading assignments seemed overwhelming, but could usually be safely skipped or skimmed.
Bro. Hunstman makes a lot of rude jokes and isn't that great of a teacher. There's TONS of reading to do for this class, and the tests are pure essay. This class required a lot of work. I emailed the teacher for assistance, and never once heard back from him. I would look elsewhere if you have can.
The tests I had were all essay. A warning to those who take the class in regards to the essays. Make sure you write about the gospel according to Eric Huntsman, or you will be marked down. I did not find I was allowed my own interpritations...
Dr. Huntsman is a great teacher, Very challanging, but only cause he wants you to learn. Study guides very helpful for test prep, all essay and short answers or identifications. Not too many books or aditional resources required, but you will need to do library research for 5-8 page papers.
I love Brother Huntsman. He is very entertaining and very wise. Not the easiest class, but just talk to him after class and he will answer any question you have. Study hard and do the work he tells you to and you will get a good grade. People who complain on here are probably people who don't spend enough time studying. This is college, people
Brother Huntsman enjoyed flaunting his knowledge, but his lectures weren't that great. Not only that. His tests are a killer! So many essay questions that my hand hurt like a mother after the 3 hours of completing it!
I liked the lectures most of the time, but the tests are way too hard for a 2 credit religion class. My first one took 2.5 hours, by far my longest test, even longer than the weeding out classes for my major. I wouldn't take him again just for that. I think he has Napoleon syndrom, he's afraid his class doesn't match up to other real classes.
Good teacher, just doesn't know how to control the firehose-like blast of info to the student. Tests are really hard but there are review sessions available and he's willing to help out.
Guys, this professor rocks! He is hard, but you will learn the material, and that's whats important. He is funny, makes the lectures interesting, and his presentations are done in a way that lets you know what will be on the exam. Probably the best professor I've ever had.
A smart teacher, though demanding. Though his lessons are power point, he doesn't just read what they say, but uses them as a road map for the lesson. Posts the presentations and has study guides for tests, so one knows exactly what to study for tests. He gets really excited about what he teaches which made me want to pay attention
Professor Huntsman is a great teacher. His tests can be hard, if your not paying attention in class or choose not to review the material. I love that he takes the class seriously and treats the BOM with respect as a text. He's funny, engaging and incredibly smart. He really knows what he's talking about and is willing to help or talk outside of class
Okay, this professor rocks! He is hot and funny. However, he is so passionate about civ, and that is good..ish, and he thinks that everyone is passionate about it and wants to take hours upon hours to study and research it. Not so Dr. Huntsman! His tests are brutal, no multiple choice, its all you baby! Great guy, funny, but Odysseus' thigh hard;-)
If you have to take Classical Civ 201, do yourself a favor and take it from someone else. His tests are all essays, which is ok, however you have to write about philosophy and beautiful art acording to Eric Huntsman, and you aren't allowed to think for yourself. He's also a complete jerk in class.
He was great, very passionate, and incredibly knowledgeable.
He is demanding, but you will learn the material really well. He is always willing to help you outside of class as well. He is tremendously passionate about what he does and it comes through in his lessons.
I loved these classes. My classics major might affect my opinion, but a lot is dependent on the professor and Dr. Huntsman was so great. His tests are hard -all essay- but he gives you review lists that help narrow down the studying. The tests are not impossible; I did well on all of them. Some writing too, but their not too difficult.
A great class, especially if you want an in depth understanding of the New Testament. Bro Huntsman is passionate about what he teaches. The tests are very hard for a relgion class. The study guide will scare you.
If you care about your grades, do yourself a favor and don't take this class. Huntsman expects you to devote your ENTIRE life to studying classic civ. Huntsman is super hard and his tests are brutal. However, he is incredibly smart, and yes he is hot.
I've taken 4 classes from Hunts, and yes, his lectures, quizzes, and tests are demanding, but I wouldn't trade the time I spent preparing for his classes or listening to his lectures for almost any other experience I've had at BYU. He's genuine, honest, and fair, but more importantly he loves what he teaches. You can just feel it.
BRILLIANT- entertaining, demanding, knowledgeable, what a fantastic professor & lecturer. Yes, he demands a lot (reading, tests) but the knowledge you gain is completely worth the WORK you put into the course. I learned so much & felt challenged by his courses-more than I can say for other classes. Don't turn down a chance to take his classes.
Interesting lectures, fairly easy tests, can get by with minimal reading, just pay attention in class.
For all those who complain about lots of reading and long tests, welcome to college. It's rough, get over it. Dr. Huntsman is very passionate about what he teaches and he knows his material extremely well. He's very entertaining in class and he helps you gain an understanding of particularly difficult concepts. One of the best teachers on campus!
Greek and Roman Mythology. Super hard teacher. Requires 10 texts. Has you read at least three different versions of each myth. You will learn more than you ever wanted to know. Be prepared to do a LOT of studying if you want a good grade.
Whats been said is true in that his tests are very hard. the review sheets can be up to 8 pages long. A ton of writing is required on each test and they do take a while. but when all is said and done if you study you can do well. this was the first college class i took and i got an A-. Great guy, lectures are pretty good.
He's the best teacher--you learn so much. The tests are rough though. up to 2.5 hours!! It's hard but you never want another average professor teaching you anything.
Huntsman doesn't realize the class is 2.0 credits. His lectures are fantastic-very interesting. He knows a lot and I love all the facts i learn. I just hate taking his tests. I do well cuz the 10 page study guides for a 1 page quiz are helpful but I put way more studying into this class than i do into my other honors classes! it takes a lot of time
This class was awesome! But it IS a LOT of work. I usually dedicate AT LEAST five hours of straight hours studying before taking any of his tests or quizzes. But he sticks to the doctrine not the nit-picky stuff, and he has lots of fun anecdotes/discussions. He knows a lot about the Book of Mormon too, and that always helps.
He takes a very academic approach to the Book of Mormon--i.e. not very spiritual. There's nothing wrong with an academic approach, but it'd be nice to feel the spirit in a Book of Mormon class as well. If you don't study the Book of Mormon his particular way you will probably struggle. Your grade comes almost entirely from tests and quizzes.
He is great, but his workload is killer. The credit hours for the class do not reflect how much reading and studying you will have to do outside of class in order to do well on the exams. Get a study group and divide up the terms from his study guide. Have everyone write down blurbs and then combine your work together and study it before the exam.
Brother Hunstman's classes are sublime. They require personal dedication. You will get out of his class exactly what you put in. This isn't EFY advanced. It is a College Theology course with incredible potential for an individual's spiritual growth and moral improvement.
Brother Huntsmasn requries a lot of work, btu he tells you exactly what he wants form you. You get review sheets for the quizzes andteh quiz will come directly from that. Thetest reviewsheet will be quiz reviews combined. If you actually do those as you go to class there shoudl eb no question as to hwo well or poorly you will do in the class.
I should've paid more attention to this rating. He gives you a 9 page study guide for a QUIZ!! You have to know terms like eschatology, glossolalia, etc. He hasn't forgotten that it's a 2 credit class he simply thinks it should be at least a 3+ credit class, he told us that in class. If you want to learn about the scriptures don't take this one.
Brother Hunstman is an amazing professor. He gives a more academic, yet still very spiritual approach to the class. Yes, it's a lot of work studying for quizzes and tests, but it is worth it. You really come to know the scriptures well and get the "big picture" through exegesis. Great personality, great class, great professor. Highly recommend him.
Favorite professor of the semester! Huntsman is my hero and role model. He's passionate and very knowledgeable. He gives you study guides with all the topics you need to know for tests. You don't need to do all the reading because the only things that come up on tests are on the slides from class, though the stuff was usually so interesting I still read it.
O, Hunts! I loved this class--it was everything you hope a class will be: not only interesting and academic, but also one of those rare classes that helps you to think/learn on a higher level forever (this is what has happened to my scripture study!) Huntsman is a little nuts (in a good way) and VERY enthusiastic---it's great!
Huntsman's classes actually provide you with substantive knowledge. I prefer his academic approach to scriptures, where you learn significant concepts rather than multiple choice questions you will forget ten minutes after taking the test. His tests are hard, designed to truly test your knoweldge, yet very manageable if you study thoroughly.
Huntsman makes Book of Mormon a much more difficult class than it should be. I would highly recommend taking this class from someone else. Despite working my butt of for this 2 credit course, I only got a B+, and that's one of the few Bs I've ever received at BYU. He is, however, an extremely nice man.
Dr. Huntsman is an amazing professor. His class is definitely difficult, but it is worth all the effort. His lectures were extremely interesting, and I feel I truly learned from this class. I would definitely take him again.
Your going to have to work in this class, he definitely doesn't make the tests easy but if you study you can get a decent grade. He does require a paper that was kind of difficult. Overall I had a love hate relationship with the class. He made the material really interesting, I learned a ton but I thought the work load was too much for 2 credits.
You will need to work for your grade. He is an excellent professor whose goal is to teach you, to expand your thinking. If you want an easy grade, this isn't for you. But if you want to open your eyes and see the scriptures in a whole new way, this class should help.
Dr. Huntsman is really interesting, but overall I didn't enjoy the class. I thought that the tests were unnecessarily long and that we spent more time on theories and not enough on the actual Book of Mormon. Huntsman is a great guy, and really energetic, but it wasn't my favorite class.
Really fun to listen to, especially when he talks about his hero Paul. However the scripture commentaries can be murder, and his study guides are about 10 pages long. Don't take unless you are prepared to work.
This class was very fun. Bro. Huntsman made all the subject material interesting. Study guides were very helpful for the tests.
Dr. H was the best professor I have ever had at BYU! I would suggest any of his classes, just so you can be in a classroom with him.
His approach to the Book of Mormon was off-putting to me at first, but once I realized how much I was learning, I loved it. He's very passionate about what he teaches and is never boring to listen to. He's also very sincere without being overly emotional. This has got to be one of the hardest Book of Mormon classes at BYU, but it's worth it!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. You learn tons of cool historical/theological information and you don't have to do any homework/busywork. Dr. Huntsman is a great teacher with plenty of enthusiasm. If you read the notes (which you download) and fill out the study guides, you are practically guaranteed a decent grade...the tests, however, take like 2-3 hours...
Honestly, this class is a breeze. Even if you don't pay attention, or go to class, you can pull a B. But the class is also extremely interesting; Brother Huntsman makes an effort to bring new ideas into the classroom. He treats his students as intellectual equals in many ways.
I LOVE this professor. Yeah, he's difficult, but the experience is completely worth all the work put into it. I never knew as much about the Book of Mormon as I do now, and he's posed questions in class that I've never thought about in my life. A VERY thought-provoking and spiritual class. Am taking his class again and I adore it.
Alright class, he's enthusiastic about the subject. If you didn't take 121 from him you will be treated like a second class citizen because you're not a veteran.
He is the only religion teacher I have had that makes a true academic study of the scriptures. If you are looking for sunday school then he is not the teacher for you. If you are looking for a drastic improvement of scripture understanding, he will change they way you study the scriptures. By far my most demanding, but most rewarding religion clas
It was a good class in that you learn a lot, but the amount of work for the class was not comparable with the amount of credits awarded for the course. The tests are difficult and require a lot of studying. The workload was comparable to that of a 3 credit course.
Prof. Huntsman know the Gospel and loves it. He brings a lot of novel insights and information. He clearly and fully explained difficult concepts. The tests are all written, no multiple choice, and take at least 1 1/2 hours. A 5-7 page research paper is due at the end of the class. This is a rigorous religion class.
I learned so much from this class. Dr Huntsman knows the gospel and is very passionate for it. The tests are hard, and a huge % of your grade. They are 2-3 hours, and require lots of details but all the answers are on the long study guides. If you want an easy A don't take this class. If you want to master the NT, take it!
Great teacher and a great class. I learned a lot about the New Testament. Tests are not too hard and attendance is not mandatory, plus there is no reading log. It felt like I was really studying religion in a meaningful way.
Non history/classics/religion majors need not apply. This guy is hard core and while religion courses are not meant to be 4 credit classes, do to the level of Dr. Huntsman's convictions he teaches it actually harder than his other classes I've been in.If you ARE a history/classics/religon major take this class,it will be the high light of your year
Ask yourself: are you taking this class for credits or knowledge? If it's credits, don't take this class. You will work your bum off and be disappointed when the test is harder than your Calc test. If it's knowledge, bowl over anyone who tries to sign up before you and TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This class taught me to love the Gospels.
Amazing professor.
dr huntsman is great but hard. his tests are managble but more difficult then other profs. he always takes time to answer questions and the ta was really good at helping in the reveiw sessions and outside of class. dont buy the packet unless you want to do the extra readings--the only thing that will show up on the exams is the passage id
Really awesome teacher. You will learn so much from him. However, his tests are really hard! They are all essays, lots of studying required!
Huntsman is an amazing teacher for this class. There is so much you can learn from him if you are interested in classics, but he doesn't overwhelm you on the tests. Though you do need to know a lot, it is manageable and I find the quizzes and tests very easy if you've studied (using his extremely helpful study guides). great guy- i recommend him
Twice the work for half the credits! What more could a student ask for? Tests are all essays and test you on a bunch of stupid details. Way harder than I thought it would be. Take a different class.
Okay! This class is AMAZING!I took him for two semesters already, and certainly plan to do so again. I advise anybody who really wants to know things solid to take it. Sure the tests are a lot more than cheap multiple choice answers. You LEARN it. I only brought my scriptures the class and just soaked it up. You are not graded on your testimony.
His classics background make him a phenomenal religion teacher. He's wise, knowledgable, fun, and brings the spirit into the classroom. His tests are all essay and very reasonable. The readings are what you need to keep on top of. I've never had a class where the additional readings were so interesting and easy to understand.
Dr. Huntsman is a great professor and his enthusiasm for the literature we study transfers to the students. This class honestly wasn't that hard, just follow along in class and take good notes. There's a lot of books to read, but I didn't read any of them and I ended the class with an A.
Great instructor. Enthusiastic about what he does. (Somehow makes 'boring' segments of the Old Testament interesting!) Lectures are very enlightening and well-prepared. Tests require you to do your reading and to study, but are do-able.
Professor Huntsman is great. I took a religion class from him too (212) and found him a little too flippant and sarcastic for my tastes. His Into to Greek and Roman Mythology is very easy and a lot of fun. He is an entertaining lecturer and he really knows his stuff.
Dr. Huntsman came to the Portland, OR area last week and he was AWESOME!! I wish I could attend his classes. I can read everything he has on-line and in books. He has a higher intelligence and I learned so much from him.
I think that he is a great teacher. He really cares about his students, and he works really hard to prepare well for his classes. He is always dressed really well, and looks sharp. He is extremely intelligent in the subject, and his slides are always very helpful and detailed. I would really recommend taking this class with him, he is a great!
This isn't an easy class, but it's pretty much super amazing. Dr./Bro. Huntsman is so enthusiastic about the Book of Mormon that the Spirit can always be felt in class. This is my favorite class this semester! The class isn't easy; there's lot of studying involved and the quizzes take 1-2 hours and tests take 2.5-3+ hours. I've learned so much!
Prof Huntsman is one of the best professors I have ever had. One of the only classes in which I only have to attend and pay attention to do well and learn. Tests are doable-- they are not as hard as people think. Huntsman is a truly Christian man and his love for Jesus shows in every lecture. If you want straight gospel, you will get it, promise.
This class was a lot more work than I think it was worth. I felt like the tests were based on your ability to memorize his lectures. Sometimes I didn't even have to read. Take this only if you are willing to put A LOT of time into the class.
Very intelligent, interesting lectures, ridiculous amount of work required for a 2 credit religion class. We studied the scriptures a little bit, but mostly his packet of scholarly articles about the scriptures. Don't take him if you care about your GPA.
Pretty intense class, even as an RM. I learned a lot, even though I came away from the first test shaking my head... 8 pages of essays, really? I had to prepare just as much for his BoM tests as my Econ 110 tests. But now that I am done I would say that it is worth it, but the honors section is not for the faint of heart.
Prof. Huntsman is a great religion teacher. His class is well-organized, with everything you need for the test right there. His class is the perfect balance of spiritual and academic study of the BoM. There is some writing, but honestly, it's just data-dumping. Very easy AND you learn the gospel. Would take again. :D
Prof. Huntsman is absolutely HA-larious! He puts classical texts into modern-day language in a very funny and interesting way. The quizzes and tests are all written (IDs, quote explanations, short essay) and slightly difficult. There are 2 great works papers (2 pgs. each) and a 6-7 pg. comparison paper of a biblical and classical text.
Dr Huntsman is so great. In my opinion, his class hit the perfect balance between academic and spiritual. What you learn that feels hard is really helpful and you come out of the class knowing so much more about the gospels than you did before. His lectures are very engaging and he is very genuine. If you want to learn, take from Huntsman.
I LOVE BROTHER HUNTSMAN. I have taken all my religion classes from him. All the material is found in his slides, which he puts online. He is brilliant (he went to UPenn!) and extremely spiritual. He has a vast knowledge of other religions, and he is very respectful of other faiths. Absolutely take him. It's an easy class and you learn so much.
Prof. Hunstman is one of the most impressive and amazing people I have ever met in my life. He is very accomplished and intellectual, and his class reflects not only his solid testimony but his deep comprehension of the scriptures. Guaranteed incredible learning experience if you apply yourself.
Professor Huntsman is an excellent teacher. He is interesting and really knows the material. The tests are difficult but only if you don't study properly. The powerpoints are extremely important. I don't suggest trying to cram the night before but I did and still did well in the class. He is a great teacher overall.
Honestly if you are at BYU to learn and not just to get easy A's he is the professor you want. There is studying involved, but if you go to class and pay attention all you have to do is review his slides and you're golden. He even color codes them to make it easy. By far my favorite teacher and my major is biology!
This class is by far the best class that I've taken in BYU. Prof. Huntsman knows a lot about mythology and he is really hilarious in his lectures. There might be a lot of readings in his class but it's up to you whether to read them or not. My best way not to read them and get an A was to read summaries on the web and follow the study guide.
Do not take this course if you have no intention of becoming a religion professor. Seriously, do not take the course. Curriculum is worthless for day to day life. This course requires 7-8 hours outside of class per week to achieve an A. I received an A and advice you to not take a course from this professor. I am not kidding. RUN AWAY!!!
He is a magnificent teacher. Really wants to share his vast wealth of knowledge. Not necessarily easy, but a not extreme. He's very straight forward about what he wants on the exams. Doesn't throw many curve balls at you on them. You will learn tons in his class.
Prof Huntsman is awesome, but he's hard. You learn a lot from him, and he's ridiculously funny, but you'll need to really study for his tests, which isn't a bad thing. He's easy to work with if you have any problems, and makes class fun. Highly recommended.
Where to start? I have taken three religion classes from him, and I learn so much. He is my favorite religion teacher, I haven't found one like him. You learn so much about the original context of the religious work you are studying that it changes your perception of scripture. Highly recommended.
HUNTS!!! the only problem with Dr. h. is that he cuts you off when you ask questions. any complaint other than that is just from lazy people who didn't know they had to work for grades. newsflash people.... it's not high school!! hunts rocks and makes religion classes interesting!!
The information is very interesting and he's great at keeping you awake. Not a boring approach at all. However, even though class attendance is not mandatory you'll fail if you miss his lectures. Even though he posts his outlines on blackboard they're not much use without his commentary. And he requires quite a bit of writing for a 2 credit class.
Thinks that his class is the greatest thing in the world and it shows, he gives way too much work for a 2 credit class and acts as if we should all be as knowledgeable about the material as him. His tests are ridiculous and graded tough. Cuts you off when you ask questions. More about academics than spirituality. Sort of arrogant and superior
I do not plan on taking another class from this professor. He is extremely knowledgable but does not listen to students' questions. This was supposed to be an honors course but it involved little intellectual activity on the part of the students and required a lot of listening- a lot! He seems to really like to hear himself talk...
Papa Hunts!!! He is by far my favorite religion teacher I have had so far. He teachers you a lot of information, but it is all important. Memorize the study guides and you should be just fine.
Papa!! I had Huntsy in Jerusalem for OT and can I just say - He is the MAN. He knows more about everything there is to know than any person I know. Really get to know him if you can because he is a really cool guy and has so much passion for the bible. He listened to Jewish monk music when he was 10!
He's a fun guy who loves the Gospel. Tests are all short answer, which I liked, but if you like multiple choice he might not be your guy. About 10 reading quizzes during the semester, mostly from his scholarly articles, not the scriptures. You don't need the packet; it's all posted to Learning Suite.
Great teacher! Very fun and tells random side stories that are interesting. We had a TON of reading to do but he has a study guide so it was easy to follow along and know what you needed to know. It was hard and there's a lot of memorizing, but once I figured out how to take notes and study best, I did well on all of the tests. I learned a TON!
He's passionate, a great lecturer, and extremely organized. His class is set up to help you be successful. He's honest and fair. Great class. Medium amount of work, but set up to make you successful.
I'm not gonna lie, this class was a little bit of a struggle for me,though I started off dreading this class, it's actually one that I enjoy the most of any of my classes. Bro. Huntsman has GREAT insights and a high interest in making sure his student succeed. I would HIGHLY recommend this class and I will probably take REL 122 from him as well!!
VERY informative - very interesting. Yes, you had to work hard to keep up, but there was SO much interesting information to learn, it really made my study of the scriptures come alive, because I felt - maybe for the first time - that there was some deeper scholarship that goes along with the Standard Works. Not just your Sunday School answers.
Definitely one of the most inspiring religious professors I have ever taken a class from. His discussions are, without fail, uplifting and inspiring. He is very knowledgeable, meaning he spews details everywhere which are difficult to keep up with sometimes, but I learned so much from him. Great class.
Take this class. He is unbelievably inspiring. Never had a religion class like this one. He will scare you the first two weeks, then he decides to be funny and make it so worth it for the people who stayed. Papers are easy. Tests require a bit of studying, but still an easy grader. Lastly, Put Jesus for free points no matter the question.
Tests are hand written short essay, 100 questions average. Does not allow much class participation. Focus is on his travels to the middle east. Far too much reading for a two credit class. Requires unrealistic memorization. On the upside, he does provide a wealth of unexpected and amazing knowledge.
I've taken three classes from Huntsman. He's among the smartest professors I've interacted with at BYU . You will take 2 hours in the testing center on his tests, but if you can write essays, then you'll be fine. The tests have no multiple choice (which is nice for a religion class) and are all short answeressay. Just know his slides.
It's a lot of work for a two credit class, but it's less than the standard paradigm of two hours of hw for each hour in class. Take this class if you want to learn EVERYTHING about the New Testament! (and why wouldn't you want to?) Obviously loves the scriptures and Jesus. He's open minded, a nice break from super conservative BYU professors.
This class was a lot of fun. It's a lot of material and it does require a lot of memorization and studying, but Professor Huntsman is very direct and doesn't throw any curveballs in his class. He goes over everything in class and makes the material very straightforward and easy to learn.
Overall, Dr. Huntsman is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had. If you're really good at memorizing random points from the scriptures, then you'll be very successful in this class. Although you learn a lot, I think this class is way too much work for a 2 credit hour class. The tests are all handwritten and took me 2 hours every time.
Dr. Huntsman made my experience with the Christ and the Everlasting Gospel a blast. He is brilliant, funny, and engaging. He really helps you get to know the Savior and want to learn more. His tests are REALLY long - it takes me on average an hour and a half to two hours - but you really learn the material and I don't regret taking him at all.
Huntsman is the best!! He is a real intellectual and has incredibly enlightening lectures. He does a great job at showing different sides and getting you to think for yourself. He applies lots of pertinent stories from his life to help teach. A real winner!
I absolutely loved this class, but any BYU student should be warned that Dr. Huntsman isn't quite a conservative/traditional Mormon. He has a solid testimony, and he works in the temple, but he's not a Sunday School teacher. I think there were about 30 different textbooks and we used them all extensively, but this class was absolutely phenomenal.
He is a very good teacher. Very detailed in history of the scriptures. There is a lot of reading before each class, but he is not a tough grader. Study hard for the tests.
Anyone that has the chance should take one of his classes. He is a fantastic human being with a real love for the gospel. His lecture style is engaging, entertaining, and interesting. He animates material like no other teacher I have ever had. I wish I could give him more than a five, and that my major would let me take more of his classes.
This professor seemed to care more about demonstrating how much he knows rather than teaching meaningful principles and doctrines. Additionally, his class requires way more work than should be necessary for a two credit class.
Dr. Huntsman is great. He's extremely caring and teaches well. His lectures are fun, engaging, well written, personally meaningful. His tests can be pretty hard, but he prepares you well. Just come to class, do the reading, study a little, and care a little. You'll do great.
I took 18 credits this semester, and spent more work in this class than all the others combined! Dr. Huntsman expects SO much of us. There is so much reading that even the TA told me not to do it all. His texts are short answer, and he asks 5-6 questions out of a 30 page study guide. I would rather chew on broken glass than take this class again.
His lectures are great and you'll learn a lot, but it's a lot of work. There is a ton of reading the tests are very difficult, all free response. You have to over-prepare significantly to do well on them.
Very passionate about Jesus. VERY intellectual. A self-described social justice warrior. Loves to talk about his own theories, but is clear to delineate between doctrine. Will make you laugh. Will make you cry. Learns all of his students' names and cares about you. Expects you to know a lot, but faithfully only tests from the study guide.
I took a few classes from him as an ANES major. He was more concerned with what his students thought of him than actually helping his students learn. Later, I took a job as his TA b/c I needed the job. He would keep his back to me while conversing with me. He also had me grade his final exams which were essay questions - unethical in my opinion.
Do not fall to good reviews, this class is insane. The amount of work is horrendous and graded harshly so you have to put a lot of effort into all of it. The exams are the hardest part. The questions do not make sense and are all free response. A lot of it is guess what the professor is thinking. Did not build my testimony just stressed me out.
