Was pretty easy for class. Mid-term and final are take home. Had to watch a movie for the class, but it wasn't too bad. Also had a big term paper, that was his big focus for the semester. Sometimes the lectures can get boring, but he makes the class enjoyable.
One of the most enjoyable classes I've had at kutztown. This guy really knows his stuff. The Term Paper and essay an midterm and final are the main focus of the class so you better like writing. He is an awsome professor and a great communicator.
He really knows that he is talking about and always takes time to answer any questions. He sets up study times if you need help for tests and is pretty funny. I really like this class, and he is probably my favorite teacher so far at KU. you can tell he loves what he does and that he is very intelligent. Good professor, good class. i recommend it.
Best prof I have ever had in my four years here at Kutztown. He knows his stuff! Read the book and go to class and you will get an A. If you slack off you'll get a C maybe.
AWESOME PROF!!!!! absolutely amazing!! So nice, easy, understanding! Makes the class interesting and goes over material thoroughly! Definitely take him ! Easy grader and very cool!
Great professor. Test are very hard, but very fair. He is extremely knowledgeable about the material and you will learn a lot from any of his classes.
Not a class for casual consumption. Demands high level of work, but its a 300 level class. Do the assigned readings, take the 10 page research paper seriously and expect 2 3-5 pages essays at the midterm and 3 for the final. Dr. Johnson knows his stuff, is personable and will challenge a serious student. I'd take him again.
One of the best if not the best I have ever had. Returned to college after 40 yrs. Crystal clear, tells you what you need to do. Good class discussion. You will have to write (a lot) but if you do the readings and take good notes, you will do well. He is very helpful
I took his classes my freshman year, even though they were 300+ and I absolutely loved them. You learn so much without it being overwhelming, and he is very willing to help you out if you don't understand something. WARNING: it is a very difficult class if you are looking to take it casually. He demands a high amount of reading and comprehension.
Johnson is the nicest guy, will always help and go over anything you need anytime. He acquired a new grading outline where now even if you pass all of your tests you WILL NOT get an A, he has you do 4 time consuming after school activities and you must write a 5 page paper to receive an A. Tests were extremely difficult and would cover 5-6 chapters.
Hands down one of the best at KU. Intelligent, friendly and interested in the success of his students. His level 300 classes are amazing but do require a college-level amount of reading, writing and discussion, but it is so enjoyable and beneficial. Will make you earn your grade, so if you want to slack off and expect an A or B, take someone else
One of the best professors by far.He is always available, and willing to help you. he made class enjoyable, but don't take the class if you are not willing to work for your grade. Has a new grading system that makes tests less stressful.
Don't take this class, complete bore. Test are hard but you only need a 70 to pass and if you did get an A it only counts as a C cuz you have to do extra work to earn a good grade. it's a waste of time, take 025 instead
By far my worst class! So boring and he calls on you even when it is obvious that you don't know an answer. His grading is weird and you need to do a lot of extra work to get an A. Tests are very difficult. I would never take him again!....watch out because his pants are 2 sizes to small!
RUN FROM HIM. WORST PROF EVER!
I find it incredibly bizarre that the below comments are negative. If a student does not want to be challenged, then they should consider an avenue which isn't that of higher education. Dr. Johnson takes his subjects seriously and tries to engage his students. Very helpful and a very fair grader. Read, do the work and go to class.
He's a really cool guy, and his new grading system was pretty cool, very different though. I thought his lectures were kind of unstructured and unorganized though. He doesn't really use powerpoints, so that is mostly what makes things a little confusing. He's really amazing though if you have an interest in history prior to taking him.
He studied in France and you can definitly tell. He holds students to extremely high expectations. He's a great person and very down to earth, but grades as though everything you do isn't quite good enough. He Definitly has favorites, i'd say avoid him if there are other options.
Had him in summer, so i think the class was run differently. All open book/notebook, could write essays ahead of time, and dropped the lowest test. Pretty much the best class you can take. Such a nice guy and cares about his students. A++
Great professor. He really works with you and his grading system. Basically received C- and D's on his tests but since I did all other requirments for an A and wrote a great paper I received an A. Hardly went to class and still understood notes for the most part.
His class is very interesting and as long as you go to class and take notes, you'll do fine. He offers extra credit and his tests are fairly easy. If you write a 5 pg paper at the end of the semester then he will bump you up a whole letter grade. I would definitely recommend him, he's a really cool guy.
Has a grading system where you can get C's on all the test, and if you write a 5 page paper he will bump up your grade to an A. Attendence is not mandatory, but going to class is helpful, because sometimes he will tell you questions he will ask on test. I hated history before this class, but actually enjoyed going to class. I reccomend him.
Do not take him. All you will do is read and write essays. I didn't learn anything useful from this class. He's a good guy, but not so good as a teacher. Way too much work to do and you end up with a C anyway, unless you're a favorite of his. It seems like nothing you hand in is good enough. Take someone else if you can.
Great Prof! avoid taking him with lower level classes, bc that is not his strong point. Take him with his higher level classes and he shines. A lot of notes and a lot of reading, but he demands the best from everyone and will hold you to the best expectations. Not for the timid.
He was definitely one of my favorite teachers. He knows what he's talking about, very understanding, helpfull, and funny. The best thing about this class is his grading system. You pretty much have total control over your grade. If you study, read, and do some easy extra credit you can get an A with no problem.
Dr. Johnson is a stand up professor. He's actually interested in what he is teaching and he seems to have a passion for it as well. I enjoy his lectures, but be aware there are tons of notes. I read the chapters in the book he required so that I could actually know what he was talking about. I stress that you take him if you are a history major!!
Dr. Johnson is an excellent professor. He knows what he's talking about and he seems to have a passion for it as well. I was interested in what he saying for the entire class. You will take a few notes, but they are helpful for the exams. Gives lots of extra credit and has easy-ish exams. I'm so glad I had him for History of Civ A!
Dr. Johnson rocks my socks! He's very knowledgeable and willing to help you out in any way and he really cares about his students. there's a lot of readings but that's expected in a 200 level history course so don't complain. i really enjoyed this class and he's funny during his lectures.
Prof. Johsnon does not know how to "teach." He knows how to "tell." I have an interest in history, even thought this course was required. He doesn't know how to "teach" all types of students. If you are good at listening (and that is it) then you'll be perfect for this class. His grading is unfair to say the least. He bases EVERYTHING off tests.
Arrogant and pompous. Laughed at a student in class at the beginning of the semester for spilling his drink. Plays too loud attention-drawing music before class starts. Tended to end class 15-30 minutes early. Spent 40 min in semester on the entire Americas in "World Civ." This is from a student that got an A in his class.
Johnson is amazing. He knows what he is talking about, so listen to what he says. If you like history, he is the man to take. If not, take another intro course. he expects his students to read and be prepared for discussion, but we are in college people. Think originally and critically and he will love you. Most caring professor I've ever had.
he does have somewhat of a dry sense of humor, but he never really came off as rude, at least to me. attendance isn't mandatory but you'll miss most of what you need for the exams if you skip a lot. grading system is nice though, even if you're averaging C's on the exams you can still pull off an A in the class if you put in the effort.
Prof Johnson was amazing he offers an insane amount of extra credit so do not worry if you do bad in the class if you get c's on tests and do EC assignments youll recieve an A. This class in interesting and he is creative and interesting. You rarely se txt book he give test ?'s in class and you must go to class!!! to know what is going on!
If you can average a C on the exams, he sets it up so that you can do a certain amount of extra credit to bump your grade up to an A or B. Don't buy the textbook as you will NEVER use it. That being said, you have to pretty much listen to what he says to pass the class. He's also fairly pompous (I've seen him laugh at students when wrong.
ej is the man! my favorite prof so far after 3 semesters. hes a pretty funny guy, but if you ask a stupid question he will make you know it. if you get at least a C in the class, with a paper and a couple extra minor assignments anywhere from an after class lecture to eating ethnic food you can get an A. def take him if you get the chance.
he is an ok guy, pretty cocky but if you are looking to take this as a gen ed course & are not into history DONT. for students that worked their butt off for an A or B HAVE to write a 5 page paper to maintain their grade while slacking students with a C have the option to do the paper for extra credit. tests are ok though, drops the lowest one.
Has a great sense of humor and really knows the subject he's teaching. Never used the textbook once. Don't use cellphone or sleep in class though, he'll call you out in the middle of class.
He is one of the best history professors at KU. His exam's are hard and you have to report to class because all his notes come from his lectures, Don't buy the book he tells you we won't use it. But,If you do all of his extra credit he'll give you an A even if your exams grades arn't good. He's really cool too. I strongly recommend him!
Very nice man and he makes the class fun and enjoyable. Make sure you go to class or you will be lost. Exams are difficult, but if you go to class, they'll be fairly simple.
Personable and helpful. He is fair and is there to help if you want it. DO get the books because he refers to them, especially in upper-level classes. DO go to class (it's sad that even has to be said). If you want to earn your grade and learn some awesome information then take his classes. One of the best in the department, and at KU.
Awful teacher. Had him for history of civ. and it was brutal. Class was very boring and hard to keep track of what he was talking about. Did not use the textbook once. He has three tests and a final and those are the only grades you have. Goes on random rants in class and does not follow curriculum very well.
At first, Johnson was a cool professor. That quickly changed when he demanded that all readings had to be done and if they weren't, you were kicked out of class. He doesn't really teach as much as tell, and then expects you to get As on the three essays and one quiz he bases your grade on. Not terrible, but I wouldn't take him again.
He's not bad, but honestly the only thing i can say about him and this class is that it's just "ok"
Not good. I dropped his class. In the month that I was in his class I learned nothing about the french revolution. He chooses boring readings and requires 5 books. In class he discusses the readings as if it were a book club without actually talking about the events of the revolution. Then he expects you to write essays on the subject.
He gives 1 quiz and three midterms, lowest grade gets dropped. The final was basically questions from midterms. Attendance is not mandatory but what he talks about is on the test so make sure you DONT miss class. There's a final paper that'll bring your grade to an A if you have a B or to a B if you have a C average on midterms. He's a fun guy.
He is a really great professor! Very knowledgable and funny in class. He does not take attendance, but all test information comes from class lectures. It is an easy A as long as you go to class and pay attention. He is one of the best history professors at Kutztown.
lectures are a drag. there are 16 assignments but you only have to do 8 of them, and they are open booknotes. there are only 2 tests: the midterm and the final exam. you need to study really well to pass those tests. they are each worth 20% of the final grade.
Nice guy but doesn't structure the class very well and talks at you.
One of my favorite professors here at kutztown. Knows what he's talking about, and challenges what you think you know about a subject.
Great professor! I don't like history that much, but his lectures were so good! And that's something considering it was a 3 hour lecture each week! You have to do 816 of the homeworks, which are 60% of your grade, and your midterm and final and each 20% of your grade. He's a really nice guy who knows what he's talking about! Take him!
God bless his beer jokes. God bless his children. God bless his ex-catholic jokes. GOD BLESS DR. JOHNSON.
By far one of the best professors I have had the pleasure of experiencing in my long academic career. Definitely be prepared to read and write papers but seeing as this is a writing intensive course it was to be expected. Highly recommended!
Dr. Johnson is absolutely fantastic. While his classes are not the easiest, he is there with you every step of the way. Even though he isn't an expert in ancient world history, he makes the class extremely engaging and interesting. I've learned a hell of a lot from this class, and I would recommend it to anyone else with an interest. Amazing prof.
Dr. Johnson is a great guy. His thoughts are incredibly interesting and different than any other professor I've had, He is a very zen man. Be engaged in class, do not use your phone as he will call you out, do your essays, and you will be fine. If you go to him for help, he will give you just that. Overall a great guy, I would definitely take again
Dr. Johnson is one of the best professors I have ever had. I end up sitting on the proverbial edge of my seat during every lecture. He also makes things interactive, opening up discussions on the readings. He cares intensely for his students, and he will be there for you no matter what. Please, please, take his classes if ever you can.
Taking Dr. Johnson was one of the best decisions I've made. He's so helpful, understanding, knowledgeable, and he truly cares about his students. His lectures are usually interactive and there was never a dull moment in his class. I really hope I can take him again!
I had Dr. Johnson for HIS14CD and his class is by far the most boring one i've had. 50% of your grade is the midterm and the final and the questions on them are from his lectures. His powerpoints aren't helpful at all. He gives book assignments but i'm not sure why because the book has nothing to do with what he talks about in class.
Terrible prof. Did not respect me as a student, and he constantly infused his political agenda into the class. I've had better history profs, but if you want an easy-A, take his class.
Professor Johnson was a very cool guy, but I just really hate history. I had trouble taking notes, which you need to pass the midterm and final. He also assigns a lot of out-of-class assignments.
He is a really cool guy and actually makes history interesting, people probably dont like him just because hes a history teacher and a lot of people find history boring and hard.
Dr. Johnson is a great professor! His lectures are very interesting and engaging. He makes you think beyond just the notes. He's funny and just a great guy in general. The only problem I had was that he never had specific dates for when certain assignments were due, it was all based on the weeks of the semester which confused me.
Dr. Johnson is amazing! Every time I was in class I got so wrapped up in the lecture, class flew by. He knows his stuff & makes history exciting. Commonly tells stories abt his cute kiddos. Classes are strictly lectures, so make sure you listen carefully & take notes. Attendance isn't mandatory but all info for finals comes from class. Very zen man
Loved Dr. Johnson! He is a very interesting guy, but I really am not that into history so it was a bit hard to pay attention to his class. It is a bit hard to take notes because some of his slides have just pictures and he talks about them. I am a very structured person so it was not that helpful for me but otherwise I would absolutely take him!
Dr. Johnson is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures can be really engaging and he just makes it overall interesting. It was hard to concentrate at times because I don't like history, but he made me appreciate so many things about it after taking that class. Really cares about his students. Just don't use your cell phone in class.
Dr. Johnson was a good prof, but he made his lectures very centered off of Catholicism. His expectations were very clear from the beginning and if you put in an effort with the work, you will do well. He was a very nice guy I just personally did not like his teaching style. However, he did a very good job transitioning to online classes.
I took this class as a requirement for my major. I would definitely take him again in the future. Each class was a lecture but I didn't mind because he made class engaging and joked around with students. We were only graded on 3 chapter responses, 2 documentaries, and the midterm and final. Overall, it was an easy A if you go to class.
Most of the History professors at KU are fantastic. Dr. Johnson sits in that category for me. With this class, when he was questioning if he should do a midterm and final, he let us, the class, chose if we wanted to or if we wanted to simply listen to podcasts and write a page or so as a reaction to them. His lectures were also interesting.
Overall, Dr. Johnson is an excellent teacher. For someone like me who is very laid back, this was a very easy course. Obviously, this is required for History majors, but just know that if Dr. Johnson is the professor teaching this, the class will be easy. Just stay on top of the readings and do the paper and you'll easily pass.
This professor is very passionate about the subject he teaches. There are textbooks to use however I did not use them very much only for the main paper which was required to do. I would say the downside to his class is there is very little assignments so if you do not do well than you are in the hole. But flexible attendance and an interestingclass
There are only five grades for the course: a map quiz, a presentation, and three papers. I know it's a lot to ask to cover all of French history in one semester, but we only barely made it to the Revolution and got off schedule very fast. Dr. Johnson is one of my favorite professors on campus so take him if you ever get the chance!
I have taken Johnson class before and was not impressed this semester. It was a lot of readings most of which he never went over. The class had two midterms based on those readings. The big assignment was our research paper and the final exam paper. Overall the lecture heavy and a lot of the time he went off on random topics.
If you skip class, you won't pass. I recommend as a D Gen Ed. There were three chapter responses, two documentaries to watch, a midterm and final. While these were probably unneeded, they weren't hard. He's a little strange but otherwise a wholesome guy.
Prof Johnson knows a lot about the subject and supplies good readings. He just rambles on the whole class about things that don't relate to the readings and he has this weird no ectronics policy even though all the material is online. He likes to tell you how smart he is and is very late on gradings.
class is based on 4 exams. Nice professor and cares about his job.
I had him in a large lecture class, our only grades were four exams. He does a good job with getting through all the material. He is a very nice guys who loves when people participate in his lectures. He also gives a couple free questions on his exams when he can't think of 50 questions. In a large class he offered extra credit two seperate times.
Wouldn't recommend for an honors course, same class but double the reg workload. Wrote 11 essays over the course of the semester and nothing was graded until the last week. Tests are based on lecture without posted slides, if you miss a class it is difficult to see what you missed. Very interesting and a fun lecturer, but not worth honors creds.
He is a nice guy. Very chill. Lectures can be boring. Very few assignments. Only 3 chapter responses, 2 documentaries, midterm, final, final essay. I don't like history so it was boring.
Johnson is a great guy who cares for his students. He doesn't do attendance often, but he will if there is a low turnout for class. Overall, you graded on a couple of things: Midterm (25%), Final (25% - 8% paper + 17% exam), 3 chapter responses (10% each), and 2 documentary or ethnic dining (10% each). Its pretty easy if you show up and take notes.
Civ A with Johnson wasn't too bad. Just make sure to show up to class because you'll be lost on the midterm and final without notes. He also doesn't allow laptops for notes without DSO accommodation. It's not hard to get an A in the class, just pay attention and turn in your work.
Johnson is very very understanding and will accommodate you if you ask; just don't take advantage of his kindness. There was only a map quiz, midterm, final, poster project, research paper, and participation that was graded throughout the semester, so definitely show up to class to get an A.
GO TO LECUTRE. Dr. Johnson's class is pretty straightforward, you have to do 3 documentary assignments throughout the semester, a podcast assignment, weekly online quizzes, and a midterm and final with a paper. If you go to class and pay attention you will be fine in the course.
Dr. Johnson really cares about what he's teaching, which makes lectures very engaging. He allows phone usage every 15 minutes which helps stay focused. Love his dank memes that relate to the material. I wish he gave more instruction on the paper assignments, but otherwise this class was incredibly enriching and I would take it again in a heartbeat.
The Ireland study abroad trip literally changed my life. There are no ratings on here for the class, but I feel that people need to know how fun the trip was. The things we got to see and experience were truly one of a kind. Johnson genuinely cares about his students. I recommend anyone that has the opportunity to go 100% at least consider it.
