Very dry and makes class much harder than it should be for a begining class
No Comments
Difficult, boring class about a subject that would be moderately interesting otherwise.
This guy is like a cross between Ben Stein and a really washed up comedian like my 6th grade social science teacher
No Comments
very difficult instructor. graded on a curve. everyone did poorly on exams so high grade was always set in the 80's. never read text, tests mainly on lecture. tests long and hard, mult choice, t/f, short answer and essay. B/c of curve, I got an A
lectures are kinda boring but if you pay attention in class youll do well
He's a real character, but his sense of humor isn't for everyone. One of those people that you know is making fun of you, but you're just not sure how. He always wears a Indiana Jones type leather jacket, and old, out of style Nike's.
Very hard, and boring. Do not take him.
I wasn't a fan of the class but I appreciated his twisted sense of humor. The class was moderately difficult and extremely boring. The best part was the extra credit trip to see the gibbons.
This is so hard for me to say because I actually like him alot. But he's like the crocodile hunter teaching biology. In other words, he's got so much passion in his eyes and he really wants you to learn. But his tests are very hard. Dont take him
If you can appreciate his sense of humor and bear his style, you will go far. He was informative. His Archaeology class wasn't too bad, though he did grade a bit too tough. Talk with him. He can be reasoned with.
It was a tough class but I'm happy I got a B
Ok, Eric is almost an impossible A if you mess up at all, but he is a great guy, great teacher, and you will never forget what he teaches you. If you want an easy A take Wendy but if you want to really learn your stuff and if its your major YOU MUST go through Johnston. I got an A
very hard teacher ...he thinks every body have to be an anthropologist after this class...his lectures are booooooring and his tests are long and hard...he gives some extra credit.. it is very hardto get an A
it was a tough class for me,but i thought he was a fairly good teacher.he seemed like a very nice person overall and would help you out if you needed it.i had a tough time, but im glad i took his class. i was actually very happy with my "B"
I never thought it was possible to learn so much information in so little time. He was a great guy-LOTS of reading and studying, but definitely worth it! Do the reading, do the work, and you'll succeed. I'll never look at monkeys the same way again!
Believe it or not, I loved this class. I found the topic itself to be fascinating and Mr. Johnston was a really nice man. His lectures were really interesting and, since he grades on a curve, it was really easy to get an A. Just read the book and you'll do fine.
Very nice teacher who loves the subject. Lectures can get a little boring, but stick with them and try to take good notes and you should be fine. He is very approachable, so if you have trouble with something ask him and he will be happy to clarify.
I was interested before I took this class and it made me more interested in Anthropology afterwards. He is a cool professor that loves his field of study. His tests are basically from lectures and the readings, and pretty easy. I love this class.
I was freaked out in taking him because of all these comments but it was for nothing. He is a very nice guy who cares for the students. After the first 2 days I was actually looking forward in going to class. Just go to lecture and take good notes. The book was hardly a necessity because he teachs so well first time around.G.S.
cool guy but a hard class, unless its your major plan on getting bored.
he is so hard.. his tests are amazingly hard..but he's funny and cares for each student even though he doesnt know your name. dont ever take him over the summer. i doubt you'll be happy
Tests are really hard. You must plan to study really hard to pass his class. Wouldn't recommend him
Great teacher. Very passionate about what he teaches. You are never bored in his class.
Easiest class of my life! I couldn't believe how easy his class was. Interesting too! And really nice, cool guy. Everybody in my class liked him and his style. Do yourself a favor and take his class.

Johnston is the ultimate prof. This guy is hilarious!! jokes are total dead pan which makes it even more hilarious. He makes the class both enjoyable and not to challenging. He knows what he's teaching and does a wonderful job of it. TAKE HIS CLASS!! I still remember him a year later! THE BEST OUT THERE!!!!!!!!
I really like Johnston, he is hillarious, but the tests are really hard.
mr j. is a really cool guy, who will answer any questions you have regarding anthro or anyhing remotely close to the subject. Very nice guy, but his tests are extremely hard, and he has a grading curve which anyone can get a C, but extremely hard to get an A or B. He will offer some extra credit, and do all of the assigmnets he gives-they count alot
Very unclear, and too fast. No pausing and very difficult. Too many assignments for the class and not enough time. Explanations not clear
IF you want to get (F) take him he wants to do everything but '''''''''will get c d F
Great class and great teacher. There are a lot of ways to help your grade and all his tests are curved. His tests are from lecture and the articles book, you don't have to read the text book. Really accomodating if you go to his office hours or if you e-mail him. I would take him again, but I don't need anymore anthropology classes.
Hes a really nice and funny guy..... i took him as a once a week class.... big mistake cause u get bored really fast..... but he gives extra credit.... he good if ur into science
Good teacher, really seems to love the subject. The genetics problems will kick your butt and he does go a little fast, but you will learn something about the subject. Good advice, don't be rough with his skulls, bones, etc.,... ther'ye cool though!
He is unclear, confusing and vague. He goes too fast and doesnt really say when assignments are due, it's your job to find out. He covers an awful lot of material on tests and if you miss something he says in class, well good luck. Also you have to go on a lot of field trip which sucks, wouldn't recommend him.
This class was more interesting than I thought it would. This teacher made it easy and if you attend SI it really prepares you for the tests. If you go to class and take good notes you'll find that most of the test questions are from the lecture and the handouts. Good Luck!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. if you hate anthro you will hate it more after this class. All he does in class is lecture. He has no visual aids or study guides to help you prep for his HARD LONG tests. He is very inconsistent. But if you have to take him, make sure to go to the SI's. it helps a little. Oh and good luck on genetic problems!
He's a really good professor...knows his material extremely well. The class is interesting...if you're interested in it. Just pay attention to his lectures and you'll be fine. Ohh BUT do not take his Anthro 111 lab class...doesn't help AT ALL...it's 100x more complicated and has nothing to do with what we're learning in 101.
DON'T TAKE HIM!worst teacher ever!he is so boring.he knows his material well, but can't teach students. half of the class dropped it after a few weeks!
really liked this prof - lectures were interesting, and i learned a lot. he is a very down to earth guy, and knows his stuff. be warned, you WILL need to study. if you are looking for a blow off class, avoid johnston. but, i would take him again, and recommend you do, too. :)
Very cool guy, he makes the material fun to learn with his jokes. He wants his students to do well in the class, that's why he takes you on a field trip and offers extra credit.
Worst teacher ever. His tests are very hard. He is mumbles instead of speaking out. He is covers the material very fast and puts stupid videos to watch. Dont take his class unless you want to read and explain the material to yourself.
Nice guy, tells some amusing anecdotes. Sometimes the class work is inane, such as when you (surprisingly often) have to color-by-numbers, other times you have so much to study you'll forget the class is worth one single frickin' unit! It's as much work as the lecture class yet less interesting. I've heard there are easier ways to earn lab credit.
He is the head of the anthropology department for a reason. This professor really knows his stuff and kept me awake and interested the whole time. Good note taking makes studying for the tests easier. The field trip was really fun too. Overall, I liked his teaching style and sense of humor. Note: I took this class in 5 weeks and still had fun.
Pay attention and take good notes...it is possible to get an A, but you have to be willing to study hard--there's a large amount of information to learn and it can feel overwhelming at first--the SI's were instrumental in helping me focus on the material that was most likely to show up on the exams--Johnston is willing to clarify lectures
this class if difficult, but totally woth it. If you pay attention, it's incredibly interesting. Johnston is super knowledgable and the field trip was fascinating. He actually made me consider changing my major
I took him for 101 and 103. He covers tons of interesting material, and his tests always have lecture material. What's not to like?
The Class was Awesome. Great Stories as well lol. He is a great professor top of his class. Lots of studying but it's just alot of great knowledge great notes help! The genetics suck but from what im told it really isnt that bad i just suck at it. Great class Gibbon center was awesome lol.....
This class was really interesting and I learned a lot. This class requires pretty good attendance, note-taking, and a lot of reading if you want an A. He grades on a curve but you still need to study to stay at the top. The book was great, and I found myself referring to it a lot. Highly recommended.
Pay attention to what he says - e****ally with genetics and evidence. Hard but rewarding, enjoyed very much - except for genetics!
Lots of reading required. Tests are not difficult, if you study and read. Lectures cover most material, but not all. Videos are helpful. He is passionate about the subject. Does curve tests, based on top class score. Hardest part is memorizing technical names. Some extra credit available.
Though i EXTREMELY to this day despise the topic of anthropology, johnston was a very chill guy, enjoying the subject, did his best to have his students understand...not a hard class..just can be boring at times...fun zoo trip and some other trips if time permits...if you have to take this class..take it with him
He's one of the funniest professors i've ever had. You HAVE to attend class religiously and take an overabundance of notes to do okay on a test. I learned the hard way when I tried to do it my way. Take my advice though, show up, take notes, and READ whats on the syllabus.
While Professor Johnston was friendly most of the time in person, his gradebook was not.Take this class only if you have a GOOD LECTURE teacher. Tough class...
he is extremly boring and not that funny, i only give him pity laughs when he looks my way. the one thing that annoys me so much about him is his tendency to say "oookaaay" after every friggin statement, it's driving me up the wall and makes me want to run down the hall screaming!
gives a lot of busy work. he often gives complicated and obsurd examples in an attempt to clarify his lessons... basically for this class, it was me and the book. his tests do not correspond to what he has to say during lectures. boring...i'd rather watch grass grow.
Professor Johnston wouldn't exactly be considered easy. His tests are relatively difficult and you will see very few A's. I personally found his lectures to be disorganized. He is however an excellent professor in that he really knows his stuff. His lectures were always interesting and surprisingly funny, despite the professor's solemn countenance.
he was so lame! anyone who said he was funny obviously has a very, VERY low threshold for humor. he was not funny. his lecture, truly bore me to tears. he has no facial expression when he talks. and his tests are the most ridiculous things ever.
Incredibly boring. Tests are difficult to pass even when I studied lecture notes and the book. I can't stand how he always looks up when he talks, like he doesn't want to make eye contact with the students. He seems very nice, but he has such a monotonous tone to his voice that I can't stand to be in that class.
very very hard
He is the definition of BORING. After being in his class i no longer fear death. It was SO BORING. and to top it off he is one annoying F@#K. He has a monotone moaning, he calls it "teaching." If u take this class prepared to be on the brink of suicide. My GOD he was so annoying, i cant get over it! UGH!
subject is difficult and so is the professor. make sure u study and read for his classes.. even with reading and going to class you'd have to study so much to get a decent grade... i'd advise you not to take his class if you dnt have to.
he is a good teacher. he was fun. maybe for some dumb people wasnt because they wouldnt get his jokes. He explains good. a lot of note taking in his class. test arent that hard if you do what you must.
its a pretty challenging class, but if you listen to him and do some reading, you'll be fine. loved his sarcastic jokes
IF YOU LIKE TEACHERS WHO DO NOT TEACH AND BABBLE ON ABOUT NON-RELEVANT THINGS WHICH DOES NOT COME OUT IN THE TESTS, GO AHEAD AND TAKE HIM. IF YOU LIKE FALLING ASLEEP IN CLASS THIS IS THE TEACHER FOR YOU HE WILL MAKE U GO TO SLEEP WITHIN 5MINUTES. B O R I N G AND NOT HELPFUL. TEACHING MATERIAL DOES NOT CORRESPOND WITH TESTS AT ALL. DON'T TAKE HIM.
He is not as bad as described. The professor is indeed very knowledgfull. His Tests are Hard and you must read EVERYTHING in some detail.show some interest and effort he helps you out. Some people just want to pass without any effort. He is a very fair man.If you are motivated you will learn alot. His lectures are almost the same as the book.
He is a weird teacher! He talks a lot, but teaches little. His class is something like SELF-EDUCATION!! If U want to do o.k. you have to read the book and memorize everything and don't forget to memorize all the things he says!!! He seems cool at the beginning, but after the first test he will not seem that cool! my advice: Take Victoria Buresh
Very hard. Read the material!! Make sure you take notes from your book as you read because his lecture is random. Recommend a recorder. Make sure you note anything he mentions that didn't appear in the text, as you can be sure that you will see it one the test. By the end, half the class had dropped. Hardest "A" I've ever gotten, but it can be done
Honestly, he is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. He is very passionate about the subject he teaches, and he is VERY monotone! Unfortunately, I'm not sure about how he grades and how he makes his exams. Sometimes people just shouldn't be teachers. But I still admire him...'mmmmmmmmkayyyyyy'
HAHA he was pretty funny although if your not paying attention, you'll think he's boring because of his voice. But he's a caring, interesting guy. His curve was tremendous so it's not too hard to do well. Only downside is that there are 3 seperate books to read. But most people don't even read them. It would help your grade though.
Very intelligent man. Good sense of humor. Laid back and straight up.
Even if u do pay attention, the class is boring as hell. I got an A but he is so boring it was numb. and its so true!!! he goes "mmmmmmmkaaaaaaaay..." in the most monotone voice ever! its like a million nails to a million chalk boards.
I usually don't fall sleep in any class, however I was tempted to sleep in his class. His tests are hard and way too much information (especially if you are not a science major and it's your first time taking a class). He's plain OKAY, not good and not horrible either.
this is one of the hardest classes you will ever take. This is coming from an A student, who got an A in this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Three books, two field trips, five assingments, four tests. This is the hardest three unit class you will ever take. DO NOT TAKE IT, again coming from a student with a 3.9 GPA who got an A. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
I've never met an instructor that could engage the dumbest students in Evolutionary Biology, or any science class. He truly is gifted. He is an amazing lecturer and should be a speaker on TED. I am really looking forward to his class. If he is able to maintain our interest as he showed today, it will be an easy A.
He is tooo hard. tests are ridiculously hard. he is a nice guy but hard class
Wow!!! this prof is amazing. He makes boring stuff fun! Definetely take him! Gives extracredit! Impossible to miss if taking anthro.
Great teacher. Had him for Anthropology 101. Got an A in his class, but had to study as much as for my 5 unit Math 104 class (althought I took antro during the summer).
I took his archaeology class my first fall session after having graduated high school. It wasn't such a great idea since his lectures tend to be long, insipid, and monotonous. There was lots of reading involved. I think the course should've been worth 5 pts. instead of 3.
Not an easy class but you will learn a lot. Prof Johnston should be teaching at Harvard with his level of intelligence. He gives good lectures but there is a lot of work to do. Go to his SI meetings, it will help a great deal. The zoo field trip was the funnest part of the class.
Mr. Johnston knows his stuff that's for sure. This class was harder than I expected and a lot of reading was required. Either way Mr. Johnston is funny and very smart. If you like Archeology take it. If you need a elective course, dont. Tests are semi-hard. Homework is easy. Either way I do recommend this class. This rating is for real.
I would highly recomend this class and this teacher. He is funny and very helpfull. You really have to pay attention in class. It is not easy but it is really interesting.
At 1st he seemed mean, but he's not at all! He's one of the most knowledgeable professors Ive ever had!! Won't lie class is a bit challenging especially if ure not a bio major, but very interesting and fun, in 5 week session had 2 zoo trips, 5 papers, 3 tests. Has a special curving method, so if u study hard you'll pass 4 sure. Take him he's great!
BEST TEACHER I EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took this class in summer. Way too much work for 5 weeks! If you are new to Anthr this is not the professor to take. This man knows his stuff but teaches to advance for beginners. You're making it harder than it is, is not the response you want to hear when you asking for help. You will need to read all 3 books.
Never had so much fun in one class great professor, learned so much. Evolution rocks!!!
I have never had more unfair tests in my life. You know when you read a book and there's a picture to the side with a caption no one ever pays attention to? Those are a majority of his tests. Extremely unfair. Highest test grade out of 100 was a 74 on the second test. 74! Take archaeology elsewhere, not worth risking your GPA.
WORST CLASS STAY AWAY! This is NOT beginning archaeology this is 500+ pages of the worst book youve ever looked at. Im an anthro major and he totally killed my interest. HARDEST TESTS YOUVE EVER HAD TO TAKE IN YOUR LIFE. Highest grades was a guy setting the curve and was a 74. And his A = 93% B=85%... UNORGANIZED, LATE. Stay away!!!!!!!
This teacher is great. It's a lot of work but that's what college is about! He is super intelligent and willing to answer all questions. He's got a great sense of humor and explains things clearly. I recommend taking this class only if you are serious about the subject!
Extremely knowledgable and quick witted, professor Johnston has a unique way of conducting his course. He carries around a wealth of knowledge and isn't skimpy in its distribution. Johnston is fair on all fronts and provides multiple opportunities for students to succeed. I highly recommend him to anthropology majors and non-majors alike.
Love Johnston! He is a smart man and knows his stuff. He also has this really dry sense of humor that cracked me up all semester. It is a lot of work, but I enjoyed the class. Provided great analogies to help us understand a fairly complicated subject. Take him if you really want to learn (and meet a cool dude)
The worse teacher ever... The best class to sleep in. Just for his record, gives C to so many people, to show that he is not easy grading. I didn't learn any single thing in this class. Never take him.
He is very nice guy. He wants to help everyone pass. Definitely knows what he is teaching. To pass the class you need to attend every class session and take notes. This is because he never uses the actual textbook called "Our Origins." The only book you ever read is "Making of the Species." Bring an audio recorder to class. It will aid you!
good/fun class I learned a lot but you have to attend class everyday and make sure too take notes!he doesn't write anything on the board so you have to listen carefully.
Very difficult class, but you learn ALOT. Johnston is very passionate about the subject, and does not waste time explaining it. Lots of reading, studying, note taking, etc. I recommend going to the SI learning sessions. If i could take this class again-I would bring a recorder! He specks does not write. Not taking notes will reduce your success!!!
Professor Johnston is the best! For all these people talking bad about this wonderful professor shouldn't be in college. It really is a hard class but if you show up to the lectures, pay attention, take notes, and attend the SI's you'll do fine. He's a bit unorganized, but he's a very understandable and fair grader. Highly recommended !
Your grade is 75% tests. You can get a good grade if you take good notes and read all 3 of the books thoroughly. The tests are curved so that helps. This in not an "easy A" class. You learn a lot though. He knows his stuff and tries to make class interesting. I would suggest taking this class if you really have an interest in the subject
Took his class over the summer without a clue as to what the subject would cover. Overall he kept the entire class interested in what many would think is a dull subject, evolution. Expect a lot of reading if you want and A
Earned an A during the summer session by reading and studying the textbook and absorbing lecture material. Loved his humor! Two exams (100 points each), one final exam (150p), two abstracts (25pe), zoo and primate lives assignments (20-25pe), and a few quizzes (5pe)...overall, the exams and assignments are easy...the challenge is completing the reading and memorizing information. I did not read the novel nor the articles due to limited time. The material is intriguing! Intelligent guy! Curves :)
Aw he's such a nice guy. The class is hard and you have to read and memorize everything but he's very helpful. He's really funny too. Attend every single class or else you'll be lost.
I liked his classes. His lectures are excellent, and he grades on a curve which is very helpful. He could be a bit more organized but it's not a big deal. If you are interested in anthropology, take the class, if you think this is an easy science, try something else. I highly recommend him!
TAKE THIS CLASS FOR ANTHRO 101! GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. You MUST study all the readings AND take notes on EVERYTHING he says-REALLY HELPFUL I promise. His tests are hard, but he curves. REALLY CHILL CLASS. Give effort and you will pass for sure.
He expects you to read every page of all three textbooks, so if you do that then you could pass the class. Very difficult exams. He is funny and knows a great deal about his subject and how to keep it interesting, but also didn't offer an SI or extra credit until finals week. You need to fully dedicate to expect to pass.
I love him hes funny and super helpful! You need to read to pass his class but the material is not hard to understand... Quizzes and assignments due... And his C" are a 65%.. Take him hes really nice and if u put attention in class and take notes ull have a really good grade!
Dr.Eric J is one of the Best teachers @ GCC,study and you'll pass its not impossible.I passed ^_^ after i stopped procrastinating.Eric is very fun and passionate about his class which makes it a better learning environment.Highly recommend
Extremely disorganized, monotone voice, doesn't notify you of any upcoming assignments. His Moodle site is a complete mess, your eyes will hurt. Passed back tests and assignments MONTHS LATER. Didn't upload ANY grades to Moodle except the ones from automated quizzes. Expects you to read every page of all 3 expensive books. BEWARE! CLASS IS A JOKE!!
I took anthro 101 over the summer and it was hands down one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. With that said, it was also one of the most interesting and the most fulfilling. yes you have homework, yes the tests are hard, yes his lectures can get a bit boring, but Johnston knows what he is talking about and he teaches very well. good class.
Amazing teacher! All Anthrorpology majors should take him. Very interesting class. I'm not a major and don't like biology, but enjoyed the class. Tests are not easy, but if you take good notes and read the books, you'll get a good grade. This teacher is not for lazy students! Pr Johnston is one of the very best at GCC! Great sense of humor!
I would totally marry this man. Brilliant, kind, respectful, and inspiring - favorite teacher of all time!
DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU'RE TRULY PASSIONATE ABOUT ANTHROPOLOGY OR BIOLOGY. Take LOTS of notes, and have a well rounded knowledge of biology or YOU WILL FAIL. Often there is material that he hadn't even gone over which appears on tests. NOT FOR FRESHMAN or to be taken as an 'Easy A'.
Takes the class a tad bit tooo seriously and his tests are substantially difficult but is still helpful but should blaze it up a bit and kick it...sup mr. j ill roll one up
Excellent professor. He always made the class laugh & he's a very fair grader. His lectures are captivating with effortless flow. This class requires great willpower and intense studying if you want a passing grade. If you survive the first exam (1/3), you're set. This was hands down one of my favorite classes & anthro isn't even my major.
The exams are based on the notes you take via listening to lectures and reading the textbook while being on a curve. The class is fairly challenging- so if you don't like putting the work out, don't expect an A. This class is basically a real college class. You're responsible for everything. The lectures can be boring at times but it's interesting!
DO NOT TAKE ANTHRO WITH HIM!!! he is extremely boring and just talks nonsense. I have never dropped a course at GCC and I had to for this class. he is very unorganized and is unclear of what will be on the exam. truly the worst teacher experience ive had
MANAGE your time well for this class. Take good notes, READ, STUDY YOUR BOOK & your notes! He's an amazing professor & I HIGHLY recommend him for anyone willing to work hard for their grade. Don't get discouraged by other reviews. Be realistic about your expectations. EXPECT to work hard, if not, you won't get the grade you want.
He's not a bad person but do expect to work hard. His tests are sneaky but if you have read prior, you will be fine. If you want to get a good grade, pay attention to his lectures and read the book, not just once, but over and over again. Don't take him if you are taking any hard or AP courses because this class is very time consuming.
Many people tend to find this class difficult. Of our 110 students enrolled, only 50 were left by the drop deadline. I found it fairly easy. Yes, you have to study, read the book and show up to class. Extremely great guy with a love for Anthro that rubbed off on me. Got an A doing all I said above. As long as you put in the work, you'll be fine.
Anthropology itself is very difficult subject if you have no interest in it like i had. the proffesor was very clear and helpfull funny and hell try and work with you. great teacher. boring subject. take the class to see what its about but remember to drop it in time.!
This is certainly not an easy 1 unit class, but no lab is. Professor Johnston is incredibly knowledgable and he makes the lab really interesting. A lot of people complain that it's too hard, but this is college. Classes are hard. If you want to learn a lot about human evolution, he's fantastic.
The professor is nice & not strict but is he disorganized You hardly know when something important is going to occur cuz he changes dates & when he gives u assingments they are long & hard to do. The class is difficult. I dont think i will take him again because anthro is a hard & i need someone who is organized and clear. But he is a nice man
He's very intelligent, helpful and nice. But for how difficult this course is, it feels like 3 units instead of 1! Studying & HW is VERY time consuming and the exams are not easy. In my opinion, it was a lot harder than the lecture class. I'm glad I took this lab credit instead of my other choices, but don't expect an easy A.
His tests are really hard. It's based on notes in class and textbook. It's really hard to know when anything is due. He gives the due date like 1 week before anything is due. He rarely replies back to emails. Lecture is boring and hard to focus. You probably have to memorize everything in the textbook and have good notes to get an A. Don't take him

I like Johnston as a person, and I enjoyed his anthro lab a great deal, however, this class was a nightmare. There is a huge amount of very dull reading, and no study guide for the many exams. So basically you have to psychically guess what info is important out of hundreds of names and dates. This class isn't challenging in a good way, just hard.
If you attend his classes, pay attention to lectures, read the book, you'll get an A. Pleasant class to partake in
If you don't have a background in Anthropology or you're not majoring in it don't take him. You're going to see more stuff from the text book on the tests than from his lectures. Don't expect any power points because there are none. His moodle page is a mess. He's not organized at all and it takes him forever to grade the papers!
Class is unnecessary hard. Even the quizzes, he'll completely throw you off and ask you things he hasn't taught, takes way too long to grade papers and to post grades
An amazing professor who gives brilliant lectures and truly engages with his students. The class isn't that hard - but you MUST GO TO EVERY LECTURE or else you will miss questions on the test. If you read the book, take notes, go to class, you will pass. I thought it was going to be a challenging class, but I got an A in Summer 2016. TAKE HIM!!!!!!
Be prepared especially if you take his Friday class for up to three hours of straight up lecturing, i'm talking no vides or in class assignments, just straight up lectures. He grades hard and his tests will make you wish you had dropped. If you have the chance to choose another professor I would.
His tests are really hard. Hard to concentrate on the lecture since he speaks low. Does not let us know when stuff is do. Not an interesting class. It takes forever to receive the graded assignments.
Took the 5 week winter class which I would not recommend. Too much material in such a short period of time and it didn't seem like he did much to adjust. Great guy, very knowledgeable but a lot of the test questions were strangely irrelevant to both the book and lectures. GCC should mark Biology as a prerequisite for this class.
I took his anthropology lecture class and lab. His lecture class is honestly very boring. He doesn't use power points he just speaks throughout the entire class. Pay attention! although its hard because you will get very bored. Read! His tests are hard!! The lab was honestly a fun class. He doesn't lecture, you work on your own. I enjoyed the lab!
I was reluctant to take his class because of some RMP comments, even switched to P/NP. (I'm 4.0 down to my last 2; taking Summer '17.) He's the BEST! He knows Anthro like no other; doesn't need slides/handouts, seriously! Either you're interested in the subject or you're not, but if you're not, don't blame him. Great Professor; highly recommend.
I took this course in summer 2017, and it was one of the hardest classes I have taken due to the amount of work in a 5-week course. However, i enjoyed it very much. Takes good notes during his lectures, read, study & do the homework and the extra credit, and you will pass. Not an easy subject to pass, but if you STUDY & TRY you will pass.
Took him during the winter session. Lectures, videos, AND book material WILL be on the exams, so take plenty of notes on both to do well. Tests are curved, so they're more than fair. I made flashcards on key concepts, reviewed them heavily before tests, and easily got an A. Take notes during lecture & while reading, and you'll do great.
i personally do not like his teaching style is really boring and hard to take notes. he gives lectures without power-point and barely ever uses the board so if its hard to keep up to his pace and understand what he is saying. the exams which are 3 and 1 final are extremely hard and have content that we didn't even talk about. he is disorganize.
Overall, hes a good professor. Show up on all lectures (yeah, they are boring) nd take detailed notes. Most of the test questions come from lectures and others from the book. It's still possible to get an A in class without getting the books since he curves a lot and offers extra credit. The only downsides r that he doesn't use PP and goes offtopic
Lectures are tough. Take good notes on lectures and readings! For me, the first section on DNA / Genetics was a nightmare. Next 2 sections, Primates & Fossils were challenging, but not overwhelming. You can tell he knows his stuff and he is available outside of class to help if a students needs it. Seems like a genuinely nice guy too.
Mr. Johnston is very passionate about his topic, and overall he is fine professor. Yet his class is quite hard, especially when taking tests - you MUST READ to get a good grade. Another disadvantage is the lack of power points in his class. Do not recommend to take his class during fast semester - you will regret. Overall, he is good but hard.
I really worked hard for this class. Attended every lecture, did all the reading and spent hours studying. Although that is the case, I still finished with a B. The tests are hard and you don't know what to expect. Its a mix of MC, TF, matching and an essay portion. If I could go back, I'd take bio. I'd suggest doing P/NP for this class.
If you dont have any idea about bio dont take this class. Heavy lectures and hard tests. He doesnt teach that great compare to what he expects you to know on tests.
He is disorganized and messy. His lectures don't have any correlation with the tests he gives. Class uses canvas but he is clueless how to use it. He expects you to know everything outside of the material that was covered in class. Taking him for GE credit is a waist of time and energy if it's not your major.
All we have done is study biology... its not even an anthropology class anymore. Rely only on lectures for all 3 hours, so you cant stop taking notes or else you will miss something critical. Nice guy though, and knows his stuff. Gets off topic and repeats the same thing way too much.
Prof. Johnston is very passionate about Anthropology and knows pretty much everything, about it. He's an anthro genius. However, you're expected to know a lot too, as his tests are difficult. He's disorganized, doesn't respond to emails, but is available to help after class. Do the EC, study & you'll be fine. Be on his case about grade updates!!!!
Good professor.
Prof. Johnston seems like a decent guy but his teaching style is very poor. He doesnt use the board and his lectures are disorganized and lack concrete facts that are present on the test. He also wants you to read half the textbook he assigns and expects you to basically remember everything. There were things I didnt know where tested Don't take it
Take this class/lab with a diff teacher. Do what you have to do DONT take him. The lab is 1 UNIT, for a 3 HOUR class, the teacher should have some decency to pass his students. He talks for 3 hours no joke, HW is packets due each class. DO yourself a favor and take someone else. Ive never worked so hard for a 1 unit class.
I think he is a wonderful professor. this class is easy to do well in as long as you do your part in reading and completing assignments! there is never a question on an exam that cannot be found in the reading. lectures are crucial, so much of what he talks about will come up again. I really enjoyed this course even at a fast pace, he made it fun!
When he lectures, he talks about things that are facts but adds nice bits of information to not make the lecture so boring. People who have a short attention span shouldnt take his class b/c you do need to pay attention. He will give you general facts in class but as for specifics, READ THE TEXTBOOK. He is a good teacher, just have to work hard!!
Professor Johnston is an exceptional professor and eloquent orator. Prepared to be challenged and also learn what it is to be an archaeologist. This class is not for the faint of heart and requires devotion to master, and there is NO better professor than Professor Johnston to learn from.
Winter semester was heavy/fast-paced. Requires loads of reading (should be done if you want to understand anything that's going on/pass any tests.) Tests are challenging if you don't read/study and they're okay if you do. Lecture can get very boring. Sometimes felt like he was unnecessarily picky in his grading. Not a terrible class, just tiring.
At Glendale community college it is between Prof Johnston or Prof. Buresch. Hands down Johnston was the better choice, his tests are far more simple and easier to understand, and Prof. Buresch teaches her class as if everyone is an anthro major. If you are taking this class as a GE take Johnston to save your GPA.
Took this class Spring 2020, aka quarantine. He did his best to make the class work online and I respect him for that. Monotone lectures with no powerpoint, but you can ask to record. Reading is really important. Tests are difficult. He gave a lot of extra credit, but could've been because of quarantine.
TERRIBLE! The most disorganized professor I've ever had in my life. He never uses canvas. He literally took 2 months to grade our exams and never gave us our scores. No one ever knows what grade they have in class bc he never grades. It's a guessing game. Bad curve, a lot of irrelevant, boring lectures and VERY difficult exams. Take biology!!!
I generally dont leave negative reviews, but there is always an exception to everything. I got an A in this class by self studying. This professor literally just talks in a monotone voice (which was even more painful during quarantine pronto lectures). I heavily recommend taking another science class for GEs as nobody cares about anthropology.
Professor Johnston is a knowledgeable professor. But his method of teaching, only lecture was difficult to following and frustrating. His online organization of assignments and modules through the student portal is terrible and confusing. I highly recommend another professor if you can, but if not, be ready for difficult test but few assignments.
Well I thought this class would be easy, it was not. Professor Johnston is serious about Anthropology and he knows his stuff. I ended up not even needing this class after I transferred, but now I know Anthro. He doesnt give tests back for you to study, and his pre exam study guide is very vague. Memorization is key to passing this class.
Dont just dont make the same mistake as I did wrap head
Took this as a supplementary class. His lectures are extremely long and you don't really get much out of them because you mostly rely on book work. He's a bit disorganized and slow with grading. As long as you study and do your homework you should be fine.
His exams are so hard and long with questions that are mean't for those who have long experience in anthropology. Also, your readings have nothing to do with the exams. Not to mention that he shows your grades at the last few days of school and it takes him a long time to reply to your emails. His lectures are long and monotoned as well.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!! Professor doesn't care about you or your grade, his Canvas is mixed with other semesters, i took this class in fall and had missing assignments from January, can someone explain that to me. he doesn't care to show up to his OWN office hours. his Canvas grading system is weird so you never know your actual grade in the class are.
I would avoid this class if you can. Lectures are solely on an instagram-live modeled format with no powerpoint and no study guides. The content for ANTHR101 is not easy and he does not give much feedback on anything. Tests are difficult and his canvas is a mess, but he is a chill guy and only has like 10 things including tests that are graded.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASSS!!!!!!! The worst class I've ever take, He doesn't explain what he supposed to, does not use a PowerPoints. Tests are very hard. This class was so stressful for me.
It's unacceptable to be a year and a half into remote learning and not adapt at all. A classmate requested he screen share to explain something and he didn't know how. It's not acceptable to draw diagrams on paper and briefly flash them at your webcam. He needs training in remote learning tech, because it's impossible to learn like this.
Professor Johnston is, hands down, the worst professor I've had in 2 years of college. Doesn't engage w students, doesn't answer questions, or if he does he gives half baked responses that ignores what you asked, exams are extremely textbook memorisation heavy, no feedback even if you ask. I cannot stress this enough: RUN. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
I always walk away from Professor Johnston's lectures feeling like I have learning something beautiful and new. It is because of his Archaeology classes that I decided to change my major. It is helpful to be self-motivated in his classes. If you require a lot of hand holding then maybe another subject would be a better fit.
Professor Johnston is not a bad person, his course is just insanely hard for a 101. He doesn't really care if you grasped the content. Tests have at least 100 questions, he just grades it two weeks after the term ends so you have no idea how you are actually doing in class. If you are not extremely passionate about Anthro do not take this class.
Probably the worst professor I've taken at this college. Has no idea how to run a canvas page. This is shown by the fact that he has old assignments/coursework from years ago. He takes weeks to grade tests and doesn't post any grades online so there's no way to know until grades get posted. He won't reply to your emails and will leave you on read.
Cool prof but terrible teacher, there were ALOT exams so study guides&organization shouldve been provided but werent, exams were hard&confusing, lots of long labs(not too hard though),canvas&assignments overall were a mess, prof not accessible outside of class+confusing+wishy washy. There was alot of info to be taken in which was hard with a messy class
PROS: Professor is accessible outside of class to assist you with the material - but ask IN-PERSON (hard to access him online). CONS: His lectures are thorough (albeit tiring). He hardly updates Canvas (tests from years ago, doesn't update grades), and exams are HARD - he does curve though. (93% for A, 85% for B, lots of questions about details).
He was an engaging lecturer, very thorough, easy to talk to, and understanding when things come up. Canvas and assignments are a mess, though. Hard to stay organized in this class. The exams are extremely hard and detailed but he does grade on a curve. Doesn't post any grades so you never really know where you stand in the class (bc of the curve)
He seems like a good guy but is very unorganized. Canvas has assignments from 2 years ago, tests are very hard, and he lectures for 3 hours with no powerpoint or visuals. Very hard to stay engaged for the entirety of class. He doesn't grade anything so I don't even know my grade. Unnecessary stress for a GE class and way too hard for a 101 course.
As long as you show up, take notes, and read what he asks, you will be fine. Takes a while to create assignments/grade, However he is incredibly knowledgeable and very easy/fun to talk to. Most material from tests is taken from the books so just read and take notes. Not a class to slack off in. Old school in a good way. Very chill guy
I took this professor last fall and he was the worst. First of all your class gets graded based on the highest score, so if someone gets a 100%, you need a 93% minimum to get an A. Get 92% and you get a B. Lectures are just him rambling for hours on random topics and then will test you on something he talked about for 10 seconds weeks later. Beware
Terrible professor, grading system causes the class to turn on each other and spread misinformation to lower the top score so they have a higher chance for an A. I dropped 3/4ths into the semester and he never graded a single thing. Had to drop because I was worried about my grade and my group dropped. We started with 35 people and ended with 4.
super hard. no study guides. doesnt grade anything. lecture exams are extremely difficult. you will struggle. extremely hard for a 101 class. if you need a science with lab do not take this class. does not respond to emails at all. pay attention to lectures and study if you want to pass with a C
He is very old fashioned so you will not have any presentations presented by him. However he is a very nice man who will answer any questions that you ask him. He is very knowledgeable about the subject. Be prepared to read the textbook and take notes when he gives a lecture.
Professor is knowledgeable but the class is quite challenging. Lectures can be dry, and exams are tough. Attending class and reading the textbook is a must. unstuck ai helped with study prep and staying organized.
I took this class for the lecture + lab req on IGETC, but I regret it. He is very nice, but a bad teacher. The textbooks he asks the class to get aren't available to rent or purchase through the GCC Bookstore. He doesn't grade everything, so I have no idea what my current grade is. Don't take any of his classes unless it's your only option.
Nice guy, if you ever get the chance to talk to him about anything other than anthropology. Terrible professor though. You will never be prepared for his lab tests, and God forbid the guy checks Canvas more than once per term.
His teaching style is ineffective and outdated. There is a lack of structured support. There are no PowerPoint presentations, study guides, or even guidance on what to study. Instead, we're expected to navigate complex content entirely on our own. This approach is unnecessary in a college-level course where clarity and structure are essential.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! No PowerPoints, no structure. He lectures nonstop with no clear direction. Doesn't say what's on tests or remind you when they are. He also does not give any sort of study guide. Nothing is graded until late in the semester, so you don't know your grade until the end. Extremely frustrating class. STAY AWAY!
Ratings below speak poorly of the professor. The class is absolutely not easy by any means. However, if you truly pay attention, take notes, and read the chapters + complete the labs he assigns, you will do good. Amazing lecturer and overall person. DO NOT take if you want an "easy" lab class for the requirement. Extremely knowledgeable person.
Very knowledgeable, but tough grader/high expectations. Lots of tests in both the lecture/lab, completely different material for each of the tests. No study guide. Does curve scores. Take Thursdays lab cause more time to study. Not an easy class, time-consuming. Take good notes in all the labs/lectures, write everything, record if u can. Good luck.
He's fine as a person but his lectures are so boring and he is so unhelpful in the labs, and offers no help getting students the required materials in the beginning. Is impossible to get ahold of outside of class, never grades anything on time, and will test you on things you haven't studied recently. If you can help it don't take this class.
Eric is super funny and sassy. If you don't have a religion, find one and pray because you're in for a ride. Auditory lectures, take notes! Lots of busy work, basically a 5 unit class. 2 different tests per section, lab and lecture. Class made easier with study group. He barely grades. Tuesday class takes both exams same day. Thursday doesn't.
