Spare yourself and don't take this man's class. He can't get past the bitterness of having a Harvard degree (a fact that he is all too willing to assert) and being stuck teaching at Stetson.
Very intelligent man, but also very demanding. He wants top-notch work, but in the end, it only makes you better. His classes involve HEAVY READING, so if you don't like books, stay away. Do the work, get rewarded...pretty simple.
Good guy, definetly pompous over his Harvard training and insightful....insight concerning everything. Difficult course, lots of reading and hope you're at essays.
He's really cool and made Modern Western Civ. interesting plus I retained what I learned. Lots of reading, but interesting stuff...plus extra credit oppurtunites by watching movies!
He's a great teacher, but unless you're a history major, stay at least 300 yards away...
He's a good professor, but an insane amount of reading, and your essays will NEVER be good enough, neither will your research paper...unless you are a history major or really love european history, do your self a favor and take someone else.
Great Course. Lots of material, but manageable and interesting. Kurlander taught many perspectives on all aspects of the war, especially social, cultural and women's history. Also, it was cool to study Asia, Europe and United States in comparison. I would DEFINITELY recommend it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!! It is hell..130 pages of reading on average..Lots of long papers to write..and no clue what he expects.
Cool class. Very interesting. I like that we get regular feedback with the short papers (but also that they're not letter grades). I did better on the midterm than I expected. Kurlander's a really awesome teacher too.
I came in expecting to be bored, but this class opened my eyes in many ways. Great mix of lectures and discussions (and really cool weekly movie showings for extra credit). I learned more in this one course than in any two other gen. ed courses. Kurlander rocks!
This was a class on the Holocaust - yeah there was a lot of reading, but Dr. K knows EVERY arguement, every detail inside and out. He does all classes seminar style, so you have max input. And we don't learn WHAT happened, we learned WHY the HOlocaust happened. LOTS of work tho.
Read a lot, write a lot, think a lot, test your interpretations of history, and with this guy you learn a lot. Not like all the other classes here where you pray, watch films, and if you needed to cheat the burned-out underpaid prof would look the other way.
Dr. K knows his subject matter and is very passionate about what he teaches. However, as an education major, I found that he did not have very good teaching strategies. We copied notes off the board and listened to lectures. Group projects and other alternative assessments would have been helpful.
Wow! He knows EVERYTHING and makes you want to know it too. Eye openers in every class. Worked my butt off but was worth it. First rate. Yes he does write lots of notes on the board to copy. Kind of a waste of time but I still learned a lot.
I took Dr. k for WWII...he's extremely knowledgable and helpful, but his classes are a little difficult for casual students. There is a lot of reading involved, and in WWII we only had 2 tests to cover 5 or 6 entire BOOKS...but it was worth it.
I admit that it was hard, but he made SOOO many issues as clear and interesting as possible. A lot of reading but managable, and also interesting for the most part. A very intense but exceptional learning experience. I would recommend Kurlander highly.
He's the first prof at Stetson who made me realize how stupid I truly am.
Awesome course! Yes, there was a lot more reading than I'm used to-- but I'm not a History major either. It was all good. Learned so much about not just baseball, but culture, and economics and race (and women who played in the MAJORS!). Recommend it.
A difficult class, but you will learn so much. Dr. K is extremely smart and he will push you.
Great professor! Tries to make sure that every student is understanding what he is teaching. Very knowledgeable and passionate about history, and his passion tends to rub off on the students! A lot of reading, but if you manage your time well, then it is a breeze....and makes himself readily available for any questions. I totally recommend Dr. K!
He is clear and intelligent. But he expects quite a bit from his students. Be prepared to work hard if you sign up for his class. If you can afford a B then you will learn lots by taking him.
I loved this course. I've always liked French history, but was amazing to read the primary sources and come up with interpretations on your own. I really like seminar classes more than lectures, and Dr. K does seminars as good as anyone.
Very boring. Class was the same everyday. He expects an unreasonable amount of work. Only upside was that he was friendly outside of class, and was great with remembering names.
Definitely a tough class. Lots of literature, politics and art as well as history ... and you have to write a research paper, but it all makes sense in the end. He encourages you to think for yourself, which really makes class more interesting than I expected. For History, take Kurlander.
Although it was a difficult class and required a lot of time, I learned so much! You get a whole new perspective on things, and he is so smart! I highly recomend the class, but you haev to be willing to do work
Much more reading than I expected, but also a more interesting class. It was really as much about American history and culture as it was about baseball. I learned SO MUCH. I do wish we spent more time on the Braves; I love Chipper!!!.
Great professor. Very smart and easygoing, fair. Lectures are pretty interesting. He does require quite alot of work, and his class/tests are structured to make sure you really know the material. Good grades not difficult to get so long as you care and try. "challenging" is a better word then "hard".
Hard class. Great professor.
I'll admit I'm not a big fan of history, but I really liked Kurlander's class. Literature, art. and economics as well as history. There is a lot of reading and you have to do a lot of it because he has regular discussions. Also a lot of papers. But he's very clear and accessible if you have questions. Interesting class.
Alright, I admit that I wasn't too excited at first about an 8 am history course. But this course was still probably my favorite of the semester. I didn't do as well as I could, but I learned a lot and looked forward to going to class. I agree with the other reviews-- Kurlander is the man. A really excellent course and person.
Just lectures and discussions. Only a midterm and final and we had way too much information to study. Almost impossible to get an A. Way too much work for a Freshman class.
I took his Modern Western Civ.. EXTREMELY hard professor.. A LOT of reading, and you have to take time out of your schedule to go to movies for the class.. I would not take him again if I were getting paid!! But there are 2 tests, and he gives you all the readings. Proceed with caution..
He pushes you to do your best in a very encouraging way. Best class I took at Stetson.
Challenging, yes. Hard, not if you come to class, do most of the reading, and ask questions. There was a lot of work, but it all made sense. I almost gave Kurlander a 4 for clarity, but the thing is, he has you read 300 year old philosophy and stuff like Marx in a intro class. Given the content, he's incredibly clear. A real education.
He's a good professor and really knows his stuff. However, the readings for discussion are usually mundanely long and they go back to the times of Hobbes and Descartes - don't expect to understand everything right away. He expects a lot and his midterm is tough, but if you stay up with discussion adn take good lecture notes you should do fine.
good course. great professor.
A spectacular course! Fun and informative at the same time. There is a lot of reading and writing for a class on baseball, which sometimes makes things complicated. but I especially like the lecture and discussion format. I would take it again in a second. READ BALL FOUR by Jim Booton (sp?)--it's hilarious!!!
BEWARE THIS COURSE. It is absolute hell--lots of reading really high grade academic reading and very little time to absorb it. Professor Kurlander is great outside of class, but favors a rapid fire Question period that makes you feel like you fail at life if you don't know the precise answer. Also does not clarify expectations well.
I had this class two years ago. Great foundation for my later education. Could cut down the reading, but he didn't test on specifics, just basic concepts and arguments. I would recommend Kurlander highly.
obviously hard for class on baseball to be bad... but kurlander made it incredibly interesting at the same time. hard course, though, lots of reading and writing. I would recommend it if you´re a casual fan or history major, but not if you´re looking for an easy A
Dr. Kurlander is a genius in the field of history. He is an excellent resource at Stetson. His knowledge spans content areas and his language experience is a plus atop his teaching style. He never minces 'phraseologies.' Every class Dr. K offers is worth it in the long run, that is...if your serious about your education!
Kurlander was a one of my favorite teachers at Stetson. I wish I had time to take more than one History class.
great
Dr. Kurlander's class is extremely time consuming and hard. I find most of his lecture boring and I do not recommend taking him as a professor to anyone!
This class is extremely time consuming, the readings weekly is ridiculous and unmanageable. Theres no way you can keep up with all the work in this class along with your others.
One of my favorite classes at Stetson. I like the mix of lecture, discussions, and film. Sometimes professor is hard to follow, but he does a good job explaining complicated theories. Not always easy but definitely rewarding.
He is an excellent teacher! The class is very challenging and there is a lot of reading but it is definitely worth it. He is always willing to help you with any problem. He discusses very interesting and controversial ideas presenting both sides of the argument allowing you to form your own opinion. Always do as much of the reading as possible!
I thought Dr. Kurlander did a great job with teaching Baseball: A Social and Cultural History. It was very challenging, but I have a new respect for the game and for its complex history. An A- is extremely difficult to earn, but it's possible if you devote a ton of time to the class. If you're a huge baseball fan and ready to work, take it!
Excellent for an extremely early (8 am) and intense (100 pages of pretty difficult reading a week and lots of writing) class. Dr. K was ALWAYS helpful, prepared, and enthusiastic.... and punctual. I worked harder and learned more in this class than all the others I took last semester.
I used to love history until I took his class. The man is consistently wrong, and although he says he values our opinions and we can say anything if we back it up, but this isn't true. I'm going to have to make a point of agreeing with whatever he says if I want a good grade.
Lectures and discussions are *really* interesting. Readings and films are good. A bit too much work, even for an upper level class. Still, Kurlander's a great teacher who's passionate about history.
I absolutely did not want to take history, but Dr. Kurlander and his lectures made it so interesting. It became my favorite class! Yes, it's a lot of hard work for a 100 level course, it's completely worth it.
Fantastic class. All reading and seminar discussion. Learned so much!
Hard but great class. I really learned a lot.
This was my favorite class of the semester. The readings and discussions were always relevant and I learned SO much! He helps if you're confused and prepares you for the rest of college whether you're a history major or not he will get you interested and you will retain it!!!
Took World War Two with Kurlander and it was, as expected, a considerable amount of work. But I really loved the class, especially the stuff on Asia, which I know a lot less about. We really covered a lot of ground in an interesting way. Go Dr. K!
I study at PH Freiburg in Germany. Mr. K. is here as a "guest professor". We have a lot to read and have to hand in "themes & qoutes" every week. I´m exited to lern sth. about "my history" from an us professor as our course is about the nazis and 3. Reich...
Great class last year. Recommend it if you have a choice.
Good class. Great professor.
Truly a very knowledgeable and passionate historian. Gets to know students on a personal level and grades and critiques fairly with useful advice on future grades. It doesn't matter if history is your forte, he's still an amazing teacher. Just be sure you do the work and if you have a question he is the most approachable teacher in the department
He almost incited me to change my major to history. He wrote the "easy reading" textbook which u will use to debate origins of historical events. The text provides u all the facts to make your own opionion. Your thoughts are encouraged & u are graded on how u support those thoughts. No exams other than easy mid term & final. 2 Super easy essays.
I was already interested in WWII. I really like dr. K's approach though. He mixes all these different readings, a lot of reading with lecture, discussion, and great films. I highly recommend the class.
Took this last year as a freshman and it really helped prepare me for college. Not easy though.
Kurlander seems a lot harder than he really is. Yes, there is a lot of work, but if you do the reading and if you participate in the discussions, you'll be fine. I got As on two 3-page essays, both of which I thought would be Bs.
Was really intense for my freshman seminar class but I feel very prepared for the rest of college thanks to his class!
Dr. Kurlander is a very clear consistent and concise professor who tells you his expectations from the very beginning and outlines them in the syllabus. you will constantly refer back to it. Grading and course tempo is empirical in every way. He wrote the textbook!!! Take this class while you can! The most knowledgeable prof in the field. Rewarding
Dr. Kurlander is a fantastic professor! He is one of my favorite professors at school, and I have never had so much interest in History before taking a class with him. He cares about not only transmitting the information, but also he cares about his students. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM BEFORE YOU GRADUATE. You will not regret!
Do the reading, or you will not pass the class
Dr. K is probably my FAVORITE professor at Stetson. He is extremely tough and you MUST do all the readings if not, you will not pass the course. He is very adamant about attendance, especially on his seminars (3-hour classes), but he's extremely approachable and if you talk to him he'll most likely understand. Hands down most intelligent person.
Read until your eyes bleed. His seminars are full of reading, and while interesting, it will take you 4-8 hours every single week. Papers are incredibly frequent, but they prepare you for the final 15-20 page paper. Despite all of this, he is amazing professor, who is knowledgable without being obnoxious, and truly wants you to learn as well.
I took The West in Question FSEM. I am a science major, but I really enjoy history and politics, and this course is a great mix of both. He is very clear about his expectations, and success in this class is directly related to the time and effort put in. On papers, he gives great feedback, and on every paper I got a better grade.
Dr. Kurlander is the best professor at Stetson. His classes are extremely tough, usually very reading and writing intensive. Prepare to spend a lot of time doing the reading and homework so you can participate in class which is a must. His classes arent easy but he is by far the most approachable, caring, intelligent professor at Stetson.
Dr. Kurlander is hands down the best professor at Stetson University. His classes are not only engaging but challenging! Be prepared to read and write a lot so you can participate in class. I took the West in Question FSEM and would easily take it again if given the chance. All the hard work pays off with his classes!
Dr. Kurlander is the smartest professor at stetson. His class is designed in a specific format which requires a TON of work but it works. In his FSEM, there are no exams and 5 papers. Kurlander is the coolest professor and really has faith in all of his students, even if you don't do his work. He's tough, but my favorite professor.
Dr. K is a well respected and very knowledgable professor for German history. He pushes you to the limit and his course pushes you to work hard to understand. In the beginning it seems very intimidating but the learning outcome is great. I know that since this prof was so tough, that from now on things will seem much easier.
This is a lot of reading for a 100 level class, but it is necessary. As long as you do what you're supposed to do you are set. He is understanding and always willing to help students. He is also very active outside the classroom advocating for the enhancement of the learning experience to benefit students and not the institution.
Horrible
Very interesting seminar for freshman. He expects a lot but will help you if you make any effort whatsoever.
Lots of reading and writing for 200 level but he gives you strategies like themes and quotes. Discussion is all based on readings and helped me learn the most.
I have taken 3 classes with Dr. Kurlander by this point and I can say with certainty that he is an amazing professor! Fair waring you will have to read a lot for his class, but as long as you do the work and show up to class you'll do fine. He is super nice, gives great lectures and feedback, and will work with / help you if asked. all in all 10/10
Took this class for the history major and it kicked my a**, but now I feel really prepared for my future studies. One of smartest profs at Stetson. Really interesting discussions.
Honestly not a class I enjoyed initially but the professor makes the material way more interesting than in highschool. One of the only reasons I stayed at school this semester. The prof also wrote the books and is all over YouTube discussing them. Def prepares you for college.
I took these classes decades ago. I prided myself on taking 3 Eric Kurlander classes and 3 Paul Steves classes in one semester. You will read till your eyes bleed, write till you cry and rage against the work. However, these tough classes will prepare you for the world. It has been twenty five years, I still reminisce about the reading and papers.
it won't let me put in number but it was JWST200. I loved this class. Dr. K. somehow made 75 minute discussions of Jewish philosophy and the bible and middle eastern politics go by super fast. I recommend this class to anyone no matter what your major. lots of reading, but he doesn't test you on the details just the ideas. all worth it.
