In this Godless world, I'm glad I have someone like Him to worship.
THE BEST! For whatever he is teaching, take him...you won't regret it.
Ugh. Don't expect to learn anything useful. Dull, pompus, arrogant, annoying. Don't go to him for office hours, he'll just treat you like you're a nuisance. Wish I had held out and taken this class with a REAL prof
Very enthusiastic lectures, funny anecdotes, but too many calculations
Langenbacher is just tops.
I didn't know that Comic Book Guy taught at Georgetown, but he does, and he is a boring liberal euro who thinks that Bush sucks and France-Germany is great. Never at office hours. He thinks his jokes are funny, but people are laughing at, not with, him.
Great professor. Etremely helpful. Fun to argue with. The first half of CPS material was a bit boring, but the second half was exciting.
Very dynamic prof, pro German but anti EU, gets off on tangents a lot but interesting ones. He puts his lectures on powerpoint online. readings are not so bad and not too much. 2 exams and 2 papers (beware three of these grades are the last three weeks). Recommend seeing TA for office hours.
Lectures a little hard to follow because of his tangents, but plenty of entertaining stories to spice things up. Not too much reading, lots of work in the end of the semester. Very helpful if you approach him or email...pretty easy grader!
Simply the best.
I'd heard good things about him, so I was excited about the class - but he's horrible. His tangets are uninteresting and his attitude is incredibly annoying. Also beware of some math.
He's the best there is. Period.
You will either love him or hate him. Pro-German, loud, stubborn, occasionally funny. Great tangent stories in lecture. HORRIBLE slides and generally mediocre lectures. The country report is an excellent and interesting assignment. The TAs for my year (2005... Rachael, especially) were great.
If you really hate powerpoint, don't take this class. He's a much better lecturer when he just lectures without the powerpoint. 1/3 TA's were good. I felt like recitation was a waste of time with Rachel.
I thought he was excellent!! You will either love him or hate him because of his charcter and teaching style. He is really smart and he knows what he is talking about. I learned a lot!!!
I LOVED him! So funny. He always go off on tangents which I thought was great (made class interesting). Quick facts about his personality: he LOVES GERMANY AND ALL THINGS GERMAN, he thinks the E.U. is evil (along with delaware).he is not overly liberal or conservative. He can be very offensive but still funny. Def take his class. He is awsome.
Langenbacher is a smart guy who knows his material well. He's a nice guy and has a good sense of humor. Keeps class friendly and informal in seminar.
Powerpoint is not meant to hold every word from a lecture over a 15 slide show. I've heard he's better for classes later in the day, but in the morning, it is painful to stay awake. Big country project at the end can be interesting but also extremely open-ended and annoying.

Langenbacher definitely makes the class interesting. He's witty, sarcastic, and incredibly knowledgeable about CPS. The Powerpoints can get a little dull, but it's not his fault-the classroom he always gets is sucky, so no one can see the board in the back unless he uses Powerpoint. Midterm, final, and 12-15 page paper-all graded very fairly.
Class was boring and he is definately NOT hot- tight pants, shiney shirts, and tacky ties are not attractive. Lectures are very abstract and theoretical with a few random examples he sprinkles in here and there. Readings are incredibly boring. If you are looking for a class to learn about and compare other countries' governments, look elsewhere.
absolutely terrible. thinks he's hilarious, but he tells low-brow stories and throws in accents bc he thinks he's cool. waste of time to go to class-he just reads off slides. but the readings are pointless anyway too. someone said fair grader? no, TAs do grading anyway. wow did i waste a semester
Hillarious, helpful, intelligent, sometimes (=often) arrogant. If you are a politically-correct, self-righteous American, you probably won't like him.
Tries to be funny but cant mask the boring nature of the class. Charles is a knowledgeable TA, and he'll let you know it. He'll try to upstage anyone's personal stories with his own, craves attention, and constantly tries to validate GWU in every possible way. Generally nice guy though, but demanding at the beginning of the semester to prepare you.
Langenbacher is horrible. The class is extremely boring and it is inevitable not to fall asleep. His slides and lectures are not clearly explainedand when you ask a question for more clarification he simply responds with a smart or rude comment. He basically expects us to be political experts. TA's...it depends who you get because they can be tough
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE TAKEN. HE NOT ONLY READS DIRECTLY FROM THE SLIDES, BUT HE DOES NOT EXPLAING ANYTHING IN DEPTH. HE IS REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT CALCULATIONS BUT HE JUST PUTS NUMBERS ON THE SLIDES, NO FORMULAS OR EXPLANATION AT HOW HE ARRIVED AT THE CALCULATIONS. THE TAs ARE ALSO TERRIBLE AND THEY CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN THE MATERIAL. PLEASE AVOID
The person below is obviously an SFS kid scared of numbers. Sure, the class isn't exactly fun, but it's not too bad overrall. Charles is the man as a TA. You walk out of the midterm thinking you failed, but you do ok. The final wasn't particuarly hard, but we could have used about another half hour to finish.
Awful. Not helpful at all. Makes you feel stupid for asking questions in class and in office hours. Reads off of his slides, which aren't clear. Midterm is easy, final is really long. Material is not at all interesting, very differnt from other CPS classes. Lots of calculations. My TA (Maria) wasn't very good; didn't know much about calculations.
The man does not like Delaware. Very sarcastic, gets sidetracked with great anecdotes. A lot of math for a GOVT course, but it's pretty easy to follow, and he makes a good case for why it's necessary. Midterm is vague and covers far too much, and the final is LONG. Doesn't give much advice on the country report. Says "namby-pamby" all the time.
reads from slides... which is worthless because he posts them on blackboard. and i didnt need those 75 minutes to be taken away from my life twice a week. and not for nothing, but this is a government class, why i did more math in this class than the actual MATH classes ive taken is beyond me. avoid at all costs.
CPS-- seriously, you don't need to go to class because his lectures are practically verbatim to the powerpoint slides of the lectures he posts on blackboard. easy exams as long as you a little time into studying. country report tedious, but easy.
Simply the man.
Exceedingly knowledgeable, clever, prepared, and passionate about the subject. This man knows his stuff. People who don't like his methods don't understand his style, which includes awesome tangents that actually lend a lot to the topic. Langenbacher makes you absorb and think about the material, rather than just memorize it. Fantastic professor!!!
This is the second class that I have taken with Professor Langenbacher. He is hilarious, but at the same time extremely knowledgable about what he is teaching. His anecdotes make what could be a very boring subject much more lively. If you just read the slides from his lectures you're really missing out.
I took Transitions with Mujal-Leon and learned nothing, much as I love his rants. Only does case studies from Latin America. One day of Langenbacher guest teaching the class and I know I should have taken it a semester Lang was teaching. Don't make my mistake.
Didn't like class- boring, horrible TA Uncle Charlie - very arrogant
Grade depends on TA (mine was super easy), Langenbacher grades 2% of assignments. But if he gets his hands on yours, he will fail you. I have mixed feelings. He is a bad ass and a pretty good lecturer, but he is just a little too full of himself for somebody so young! He can be very funny in his digressions, though.
Ok, so Langenbacher is in summary: a ridiculous little man who turns out a good lecture when using anecdotes. His tests are just silly, but fine IF you study hard. No tricks, etc. Don't freak out for the midterm - way easier than you think. Be careful on the country report and with calcs on final! Note: you either hate or love the Prof.
Too opinionated and arrogant for my taste. LOVES Germany and Europe, which I don't, but would be good if you do. Midterm, paper, and final aren't hard, but you have to be willing to put time into them. TA's grade everything so hope to get a good one. Lectures are boring and are basically not needed if you download the slides and study those.
Interesting anecdotes. Calculations on the final were tedious.
Definitely arrogant and pompous, but if you enjoy European affairs/Germany/the EU, take him. He's a brilliant guy, lectures well, and is not too harsh of a grader. Likes it best when you share his view however. If you take his prosem, he's extremely nice and helpful afterwards.
Class was interesting; Langenbacher livens it up a bit with stories about Germany and Quebec. My TA did not go to lectures, but graded the exams and paper.
super duper pretentious, but at the end of the day knows his stuff. final paper is really freaking hard. take CPS with king if you can, but if you cant hes not bad.
He is a brilliant man and a good lecturer. For CPS the class is huge, so not much personal help or attention. TAs can be good or bad it depends. The midterm and the paper were graded very fairly and arent too hard, however, the final exam is challenging. I got an A- going into the final with an A.
I LOVE PROFESSOR LANGENBACHER. IF you get used to his acerbic wit, his anecdotes and pet peeves are hilarious and make a 1 hr 15 minute lecture interesting. He also really really knows his stuff. The class was difficult, but the TAs grade everything because it's a big lecture, so it's hard to pin the difficulty on Langenbacher himself.
yes, he's sarcastic, arrogant and OBSESSED with germany. but if you give him a chance, you'll grow to love his arrogance. besides, half the fun of class is the anecdotes about his hatred of delaware and raising chickens in his gtown house. you'll also learn a ton.
Not a fan. Langenbacher's lectures were hard to listen to, mainly because he comes off as a know-it-all. He reads directly from his powerpoints, which makes it even harder to pay attention. Midterm is strange and the class doesn't have much structure. 20 page paper sounds harder than it is. Worst class of my semester
Took his politics and memory class. was graded fairly, helpful comments, interesting lectures, always gives a break in between. my favorite class so far in georgetown. interesting essay topics as well.....
Great Prosem! I knew nothing about collective memory going in and came out with a great understanding of the topic. Langenbacher tells hilarious stories and keeps lecture interesting. Five papers (including 12-page final) but the topics are interesting and go along with readings.
Langenbacher definitely isn't for everyone, that said, he was one of my favorite professors at Georgetown. He is extremely knowledgeable, very funny, gives great lectures and is really fun to talk with outside of class. I don't disagree with people who might not have enjoyed his class.
I gave this prof all 5s! He is SO knowledgable and absolutely brilliant. He can seem a little pompous at times, but it becomes SO entertaining and rather endearing. Class is a little tough and you have to do the reading, but Langenbacher is so brilliant that it is so worth it.
I like Langenbacher - he's so knowledgeable and very very funny. Arbitrarily graded down the midterms for my section which was not cool, but other than that indiscretion a very good professor indeed.
BEST PROF EVER!!!!!!!!!
I really like Langenbacher, he's one of the more interesting professors I've had. He has stories and examples for everything, mostly about Germany. Lectures have lots of information, but he keeps them interesting. Grade really depends on your TA though because Langenbacher doesn't grade anything
The class is great except for the final which is more based on math and calculations that are over-the-top and unnecessary.
Completely overrated. Langenbacher's a very well-spoken professor, but you are at the mercy of your TAs.
Grading depends on the TA, but Langenbacher's lectures are clear and interesting. He and King are both good for CPS; Langenbacher's class focuses more on differences between democratic systems, while King's has more about authoritarian and communist systems.
Knows how to teach. Funny, engaging lectures, and lots of good anecdotes/examples. Not as cocky as people say. Midterm turns out not to be that bad, so long as you know your stuff, but the final crams in too much for a 2-hour test. More math than most would expect for a gov class, but it's not hard. Country reports graded fairly. All TAs are great!
Atrocious. Do yourself a favor and take King. Langenbacher will destroy your love of politics. Teaches the class ridiculously and with too much insistence on mathematical calculations. Utterly pompous and self-important. If you get stuck with him, be sure to be the jerk who asks dumb questions in section so your TA likes you.
Your grade entirely depends on your TA's who for the fall of 2008 were all fabulous. As to Langenbacher himself, I personally thought he moved a little to quickly and just was repetive of what was on the powerpoints. I personally would recommend King over him. Plus the 20 page paper sucked! (no paper for king)
Funny and interesting. Suffers from a chip on his shoulder about Germany. Worth taking if you don't mind (simple) math, although the 20-pager is tough.
Funny guy, but boring lectures. The 20 page paper is horrible. There should never be a 20 page paper in an intro class. Midterm was easy but the final was ridiculous. A 3 hour test crammed into 2 hours with way too many calculations.
Lectures can be dry at times, but he's pretty interesting. He loves to talk about Germany. It becomes slightly annoying at times. The grading is entirely dependent on the TA's. My TA was a pretty easy grader. The 15 Page paper is bad, but not THAT bad. Only three grades-paper, midterm, and final.
He is hilarious. The topic can get a bit boring and he pretty much just repeats what's on his powerpoints but he has so many stories and funny comments. He does love Germany, and likes to joke about Canada and Delaware but it really adds to the enjoyment of the class. 20 page paper wasn't bad, although daunting.
there's lots of opinion in his lectures, which is good if you want to learn how to defend an argument. it can get a little frustrating though. The research paper is fine, and yes you CAN do a western European country and still get an A even though he makes it sound like you can't.
He's a pretty good professor. Lectures can be sort of boring, but pay attention because it helps out for the final and midterm. They are basically regurgitate what he said exams. Class is dependent on TAs. He talks about Germany and Canada a lot, but it contextualizes the lecture.
Quirky? Sure. Interesting? No, has reading off of powerpoints ever been fun? First 1/2 too theoretical, second 1/2 too quantitative. Memorize the formulas, seriously? As if real political scientists would bother. "Master narrative" more like a bunch of stuff weakly strung together. Final is too much material crammed into 2 hr.
Ehhh... Prof Langenbacher was ok. His lectures consist solely of Powerpoints which can get boring really quickly. The 15-20 page paper is very daunting, but it is doable. I really thought the final was the easiest grade, but it is very heavy on calculations, so if math isn't your thing, it can be hard.
I loved professor lagenbacher! CPS is going to have dry, intro-level subject matter, but he editorializes a lot to make it interesting (and he always let' you know when it's his opinion, rather than fact). Heavy emphasis on calculations made the final exam feel like a math test (wasn't hard though), and the 20 page paper is a drag, but wasn't hard
Eric Langenbacher is by far one of the best professors at Georgetown. His lectures are both entertaining and informing. You will learn a lot and will enjoy learning in his class. Always available to answer questions both before and after class, and during office hours. Highly recommend taking this course, you will love it!
Nice guy and has interesting things to say
Overall, not a bad professor. Certainly, his lectures can get a bit boring, but that comes with the territory. He pretty much tells you how the midterm will go, the paper is manageable, and the final is straightforward though a lot of information.
Worst professor I've had in the GOVT department at Georgetown and clearly the most arrogant. Loves the sound of his own voice. Take anyone else and thank me later.
Langenbacher is a very good professor. Powerpoint lectures- not mandatory, the discussion sections help alot. GREAT TA's- atleast for my semester, the midterm is one long essay but you are given the question beforehand, 20 page paper but its interesting to write, final is fine and you know whats on it. Overall good professor
Very interesting class. Langenbacher is funny, ranting, interesting and a great experience to have at Georgetown. Class time is long (as are all Proseminars), but is easier if you have done the reading. If you have any questions, SEE HIM. He is alot of fun, and provides a great insight to Georgetown.
Langenbacher's class is entirely mathematics the second half of the term - so unfortunate if you accidentally signed up for him because you're trying to satisfy your major requirement. I am hopeful not to fail, this isn't teaching me anything but memorization of a few equations that I will not remember after the final. 20 page term paper stinks too
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic! His lectures are fun and you get a lot from them. The middle part with the calculations was tedious and the fact that the final is 70% based on that is scary. But the man gave some awesome lectures on american exceptionalism, the eurocrisis and intro to the nation and state. Grading-harsh but fair, I think.
Langenbacher puts together a great class with very good lectures. Even thought its not mandatory I looked forward to attending almost every time. I actually found it a relief that the final was 70% calculations because they were laughably easy. Seriously, don't let the "math" scare you away from a great class.
His lectures can be a bit dull but he does tell you exactly what to prepare for the final and midterm. Honestly, your grade will depend completely on your TA, so bond with them.
I loved this class. The content was very interesting provided an interesting perspective. For a proseminar class, Professor Langenbacher structures the material well so that freshmen can maximize their gains from the class. He isn't the easiest of graders but he is reasonable. He is very responsive outside of class, so go to office hours.
A bit of a character, but a good professor. Discussion sections are important. Other than that, personally, I did not have the slightest interest in comparative political systems as a topic, but he made it bearable.
In CPS now as a freshman. Very reading-heavy, especially in the first half. Second half is entirely equations which, for a math-minded person (like me), are fairly simple. First half is wholly conceptual. No homework besides reading and one 12-15 page paper in mid-November. Midterm required a good deal of reading. He loves Germany. Good class.
Take the other Comparative Politics professor.
I really enjoyed this class and Professor Langenbacher made things really interesting. He absolutely loves everything and anything involving Germany. If you have an interest in Germany or in the relationship between the cultural and the political, this is the class to take.
Different than some of the other CPS courses but still a good class. Langenbacher is generally a good lecturer, and sometimes tells really random, funny stories in class. There is a calculations based part of the major paper and final, but neither are too difficult. Overall an enjoyable class.
Good lecturer. Don't be afraid of the math. He is super helpful in office hours.
This class was absolutely awful. The first half was really easy and the TA does all the reading. He barely teaches you how to do the calculations in the second half. He acts like the calculations on the test are relatively easy if you study, that is a lie. The fall 2013 final included a ton of surprises. everyone left the room crying
Langenbacher is the best kind of nerd. He's super knowledgable and knows everything about Germany. Lectures can be dry but you should go; slides are online but it really helps to be there. Your grade really depends on your TA (Binio 3) and the paper is rough. Langenbacher himself is great, not a bad option for CPS.
One of the most eloquent professors I've had. The topics can be a bit dry, but Professor Langenbacher makes them interesting. He goes over most of the material in class, so you don't need to do more than just skim over the assigned readings (though some are really thought-provoking). Your grade depends on your TA, so make sure to be on best terms.
He does a good job at making what seems like dry material relevant and interesting. I really like the subject so he made it enjoyable for me, but even if you're not interested in the subject he makes it worthwhile. You need to do the readings and pay attention in class and TA-led section, but putting in effort makes this class fairly easy.
Langenbacher's lectures were kind of boring, especially the first half of the semester. Second half of the semester is equation-based, which is incredibly easy, and special topics lectures which are actually interesting. Tons of assigned readings, but I didn't do all of them. Very clear cut about assignments and test prompts.
I had Eric for my proseminar politics and collective memory and it was my favorite class of the semester! Only 4 relatively short papers (5 pages) and we watch movies and it's a fun class! Eric bought us pizza once. He's so funny and SO knowledgable and you can tell he loves what he's teaching which just makes the class that much more enjoyable.
Eric was literally the best professor I had my first semester at Georgetown. He is such a great and funny guy. He knows his stuff and is so interested in learning more all the time. He's great to just sit back and have a conversation with. That's exactly what his class feels like. I can't wait to take his CPS class next fall!
Eric is the best! Lectures are long but he is really funny and always finds a way to make things interesting. You can tell he really cares about this course. There is a lot of assigned readings but students make presentations summarizing the readings each week. This can get a bit dull, but helps if you don't have time to read everything.
I took Langenbacher's Proseminar on Politics&Memory. There is quite a bit of reading due every week, and there are weekly student presentations summarizing the readings. This can be get dull at times, but the topics are interesting and it means you don't have to read yourself. 4 5-page papers, one presentation and one take home final (12-15 pages).
Langenbacher's lectures are funny, but he goes through slides way too fast. He's the only CPS professor who teaches calculations and makes you memorize them for the final exam. You'll also have to do a 15 page country report linking levels of democracy with an issue there. Basically, you could get the requirement with a much easier professor.
Langenbacher is an decent choice for GOVT-040 CPS. His lectures are pretty informative and pretty much just summarizes the readings. Besides participation, there are three grades total. The midterm is vague and hard to prepare for. The country report is open ended and takes time . The final is on understanding calculations for democracies. Average
Langenbacher isn't a bad choice for CPS if you know what you're getting into . CPS isn't an easy class, so you have to choose the professor that fits the most with your work habits. If you like few assignments (midterm, long paper, and a final) and mathematical calculations, take him. If that's not your jam, I suggest choosing someone else.
Professor Langenbacher isn't the most engaging professor ever but his knowledge on the topic (History and memory) makes his lectures amazing. Expect 4 five-page papers and a 12-15 page take home final, and external research. One 30-minute oral presentation about a country is also required. 2 of these every class occupy the whole time of the lecture
I had Professor Langenbacher for Comparative Systems in 2003. I remember how animated he was all the time. I actually really enjoyed him as a professor. I still remember all the different parliamentary systems he taught. I took copious notes, which led to a high grade (I think I got an A).
I took into to CPS with Langenbacher and it has proven to be one of the most challenging and unbearable classes I have had. He is a boring professor that occasionally and obnoxiously spouts his political opinions or obsession with Germany. Would strongly urge not taking him for CPS.
Obnoxious and bland lecturer. Midterm is a hard in-class essay, but you get the prompt beforehand. Moderately difficult paper and final - calculation heavy but the math is the easy part. A lot of lecture and readings are irrelevant. There are easier and better choices for CPS, but it's fine if you like being graded on a few difficult assignments.
Langenbacher is certainly one of the most knowledgable professors I've ever had, and this in itself makes his class enjoyable. He is a fan of his own opinion though, so if two competing egos may pose problems for you, maybe steer clear. I would certainly recommend him, however, to someone interested in learning even beyond the class description
I absolutely loved Langenbacher, especially with his emphasis on electoral systems and the Master Narrative, a fairly cool concept. What others have said about his opinion-heaviness is true. Midterm and finals are silly (midterm: memorize an essay, final: math test), start the paper early. He also might let you help with research, which is great.
Assignments are midterm (in-class prepared essay), research paper, and final. He's a really dynamic lecturer and got a lot of interesting stuff to say about Germany, but the class is very Eurocentric and you'll hear about Germany pretty much every class. Start the paper early + write quickly for the midterm because the grading isn't easy.
This class is more like comparative European politics rather than CPS. So if you are interested in Europe, go ahead. If not, this could be a very dry and tasteless class. He had very cool concepts on modernity, which I liked, but at the same time I don't think spending several lectures on math makes much sense. I would give him a 3.5 if I can.
Class is bland but he's a good choice for it. Took my prosem w/ this prof & liked him more in that setting than a lecture. Class is Eurocentric which was fine for me (others hated). Grade depends on TAs who have crazy standards. Assigned readings are unnecessary (I didn't do a single 1) Prepare well for midterm and final and start the paper early.
Lectures are dry and VERY eurocentric, but the material is interesting. Don't need to do the reading because he goes over everything in class + puts powerpoints online. The final is mostly simple math, which was pretty easy. Start the paper early and you'll be fine. Honestly, didn't learn that much about CPS but it was an okay class
This guy is literally obsessed with Germany
Do yourself a favor and take Langenbacher for CPS. His three big assignments (midterm, 15-page paper, calculation-based final) are intense, but have clear grading criteria. This is a departure from other classes in the GOV department *cough IR* where grading is ruthlessly subjective. Plus, Langenbacher's lectures are cool, engaging, and informative
Extremely clear about expectations and has great stories. The course has 3 sections: a theoretical introduction (assessed by a prepared essay Mid-Term), a long quantitative framework (when we learn calculations and write an easy 15-page country report), and a final thematic session ending with a Final with 1 essay and 3 calculation-based questions.
A solid professor who had some great lectures and a sense of humor (some lectures were really dry though). Loves Germany. Grades completely determined by TAs. Only three assignmentsone midterm (you get the question on the first day of class), research paper (calculations), and final (3 calculations and 1 essay). Did no readings and did fine.
Prof L has been my favorite prof at Gtown so far. He doesn't believe in surprises so you know exactly what the midterm question will be/ what topics will be on the final. He makes this class so interesting by offering cool anecdotes and relevant world examples. Calculation portion is very simple math and a nice break from heavy gov. Clear slides!
ok choice for CPS. Graded on midterm, paper, final. Exams are very straightforward and he tells you what to expect; the paper is silly. You're forced to find and then solve a problem a country faces and somehow fit in random calculations. Terrible assignment worth 30% of grade. Lectures are mixed: sometimes dry and sometimes funny/interesting
Don't get the low reviews, he's not amazing but he really is fine. Good for CPS s,nce he literally wrote the syllabus
he is ok. not too hard, not too easy. show up, do what he says and you'll ace it
Took him during the summer semester. Worst possible choice ever.
Langenbacher's CPS class is a decent choice, though you are constantly indoctrinated by his thoughts which lean toward German style government. Kind of a bot though he has passion for what he does. midterm is easy if you follow along. Paper is long/kinda annoying but overall interesting. TA's grade mostly so get ready to roll those dice
Much more numerical than other CPS, but not difficult math or anything. Fun, pretty interesting.
The professor is good, this prosem was student run. Students give presentations, they teach the class, and he just grades. He is very knowledgable and will comment but he doesn't do much. Class has 3 papers, a presentation, and a final paper, but overall a very easy class to take but gets boring.
Professor Langenbacher is very knowledgeable about the subject, but the class is all student run so we didn't get to learn much from him. Each week, a student presents 40+ pages of reading. This process is extremely boring and does not allow for student engagement. If you are looking for a discussion focused prosem, this is not it.
He is clearly very knowledgable and interested in the subject and does a good job of keeping lectures interesting, but definitely has opinions and biases. The math is really memorizing a few easy formulas. The midterm is easy if you just do what he says, same for the research paper. Final is kind of hard, but that's really just due to time.
Class is very TA-dependent. Langenbacher is fine, but lectures can be boring and the class itself is really stupid. Midterm just asks us to regurgitate his own theory of political development that we talk about once. Final is a bunch of calculations mostly. Not egregiously difficult, but not particularly exciting or engaging. Research paper is cool
Solid choice for prosem, if you are interested in the topic. But it is hard to get an A (idk who wrote his class is an easy A down below). three 7 pg long-almost-research-papers & 15 pg final paper & presentation. he grades pretty harshly
His lectures are so boring and you have to choose between listening to all of the information and taking notes.
Everything in class was graded by the TAs, so grading policies will vary. Lectures were pretty interesting, but he can sometimes get lost in anecdotes. The midterm was pretty easy, and he gives you the question way ahead of time. Final wasn't too bad, but prepare to do lots of arithmetic in a short amount of time. A couple of readings each night.
Attendance is not taken and the readings are not required. You might be able to get away without doing the readings depending on the TA. Grading is also very TA dependent, but the midterm and final aren't too bad- there are no surprises as he tells you exactly what's going to be on them. Overall, a solid choice for CPS.
Terrible professor. Used subjective data to further his opinions which are combative and offensive. He discriminated against my region of the United States. Generalizing everyone from my state. What a let down.
Not a fan. Very hard final, long papers, midterm wasn't too bad however. Kinda odd but kinda interesting. The final alone is deadly.
took him as a last-choice prosem, and ended up absolutely loving the class! super knowledgeable and can (and will) recite the readings he assigns (all on canvas btw) by memory. Three papers throughout the semester on topics we could choose, one presentation, and a final paper. He does grade harshly, but you'll pass just fine & learn a bunch.
Love this guy - passionate teacher! Politics and Memory is interesting and increasingly relevant. Not the easiest prosem for sure but there are only 4 big papers (3x 5-7 pages and 1x 12-15 pages (take home final)) you must complete so not a lot of unnecessary busy work like other classes. I really don't think he is a tough grader although some do.
Grading done by TAs feels arbitrary, and it is not standardized between sections. Professor Langenbacher himself is an engaging lecturer with lots of funny stories. The exams have no surprises, and Langenbacher never tries to trip you up. He is genuinely interested in and involved in his field, though he doesn't do much to get to know his students.
lots of reading; paper heavy class; langenbacher is funny and pretty chill
The class was ok at first. The 18 pager is absolute hell. The lectures are full of arbitrary tangents and I didn't learn anything useful. The exams clearly demonstrate his lack of effort to make the class interesting and fun, and we simply regurgitate his ideology in a 2 hour sit-down essay. The final exam damn near gave me stroke. Good luck SFSers
Langenbacher is not really accessible, so reach out to your TA! The midterm was easy (essay on his theory, go to lecture at least up to midterm) and the final is easy (very straightforward) as long as you practice your calculations beforehand (know your calculator). Research paper (15-20 pages) was not fun, but again grading is very TA-dependent.
Prof Langenbacher is the best of Georgetown. He is extremely passionate, goes at a fast pace during lectures, and is a great intro course. The readings of the course are optional but are very useful for further classes. the grade is TA dependent. Its really easy to do well in the Midterm and Final. The Country report is time-consuming, but def rec!
Langenbacher gets some undeserved hate. I loved his CPS class. He is super knowledgeable and his class was very, very interesting. I was very interested in government tho and if thats you, you'll like his class. Overall, it was very easy too. Midterms were very predictable and easy if you prepared right.
This class is very TA dependent, so I cannot speak on grading. However, this class is only three assignments, all of them, I would say to be relatively straightforward. If you can look past his dull lectures, I think Langenbacher provides a simple model for a complex class that allows many students to actually manage this complex class.
TAs grade. Slide decks are all online ahead of time, and despite relatively dull lectures, the class is straightforward. He tells you exactly what to know for the midterm (question given during very first class), research paper is self-driven (TAs grade), and exam is a time crunch but not on unexpected material.
I rarely went to lecture for this class. he was so unbearably boring, even though the content was interesting. Workload is the same across all CPS classes. Midterm, country report, and final exam. If you have a good TA, you will have less trouble with content and grading. Not the end of the world, but try for another professor if you can.
I wouldn't say he is an "avoid-at-all-costs" professor, but I don't recommend him. He is full of himself and his lectures consist of ramblings about Germany and weird anecdotes. The midterm is easy, the country report can be if you use your TA, but the final exam is atrocious. If you strongly dislike math or calculations of any kind, do not take.
Y'all have so much hate in your heart. The class is interesting enough and is 100% straightforward Langenbacher tells you what will be on the midterm, the final, and the paper is easy if you just include everything touched on in class. You basically just sit, listen, regurgitate and you get an A. Not gonna be phenomenal but not hard.
Overhated in my opinion, Langenbacher is a solid lecturer and clearly very knowledgeable in his field. CPS is definitely one of the most beneficial core government classes, and he makes it so you learn a ton over the semester. It is very lecture and test-heavy, but if you pay attention you will be fine.
This class has almost no weekly work and the lectures are not necessary to go to in order to succeed. The midterm is easy and the long paper is manageable if you start early. The final is extremely difficult and calculation heavy so be prepared to take that on!
I have enjoyed Prof. Langenbacher's class a lot. He's good at taking something he knows a lot about and explaining it in a way that students can understand him using historical and anecdotal examples. I liked his stories that he tells. He assigned readings, but they weren't important because he went over them (almost word for word) in class.
Prof. Langenbacher gives really solid lectures that will help your understanding of the material. The 15 page country report is hefty, but it is honestly not that bad and can be done in a couple of days. Grading can be TA dependent, but put in effort and the class is a relatively obtainable A.
Lectures aren't engaging. Midterm relies on regurgitating his theory, no guidance given on country report/arbitrary grading, and a final exam purposefully designed to put you in a time crunch + focuses more on how quickly you can do trivial math rather than the actual material. If you're okay at math you'll get thru, but this class isn't worth it.
Loves Germany. Very TA-dependant Grading: - midterm (in-class essay tells prompt beforehand) - country report (15 page essay) - final (tedious math test with short response) - participation in recitation
Interesting material (it's nice to hear how passionate he is about Germany lol), not too much work. Class is only difficult bc of lack of communication about expectations/grading criteria. Only 4 grades (participation, timed midterm essay, long research essay, math-based final exam) so if you misunderstand his vague directions your grade is hurt.
Like any GOVT class, really dependent on your TA. First half of the semester and the midterm surround his own theory, which is questionable. Uses his own unpublished txtbk. Second half is more empirical, but the research paper has essentially no guidance. Generally engaging lectures with usually less-than-interesting material.
Langenbacher is a solid choice for CPS if you prefer more quantitative methods. He can occasionally tend to go on long tangents, and is not always sympathetic if you reach out to him with questions/concerns but no major complaints.
I loved professor langenbacher's class. he is a very intelligent individual and an interesting lecturer. I enjoyed all of the class content and thought all of the assignments and exams were fair. Your grade really depends on your TA. My TA was a very harsh grader, other TAs gave everyone 100 on the research paper and exam questions in advance
The professor makes no attempt to even out grades based on different TA grading. Course is graded by timed-essay midterm (which you memorize in advance), 20-page research paper (which you must start in advance because the calculations take forever), and a final that is heavily dependent on your ability to do math like an Excel sheet. Good luck!
Took Politics & Memory: INAF 1010 Fall 2023 because an alum friend of mine recommended and super glad I did! Course is graded by participation and 3 papers, all of which are fairly open so you can explore the topics you want; He's very accessible in Office Hours and gives feedback, but doesn't spoonfeed what you want directly to you.
Interesting guy and conversations! Biased but is clear about his biases, very open to academic dialogue about politics. I learned a lot from him in general, but only graded us by 3 assignments for the whole term, and the grading metrics for those assignment incredibly unspecific. No real rubric, "do it justice" he says; final= very hard
Professor Langenbacher is an engaging lecturer who makes complex topics digestible. While the workload can be heavy, attending class and using resources like unstuck study for study prep goes a long way. Solid choice for a core CPS requirement.
professor goes on tangents often, but lectures are usually interesting. textbook is his own unpublished book, and readings follow his lectures almost word-for-word. only 3 assignments: midterm which is an in-class essay, 15-20 page research paper, and final. grading is almost entirely done by TAs. not my favorite professor, but a decent choice.
Langenbacher's an interesting lecturer, and I think he makes CPS pretty interesting, even if his class is more math focused than others. Your TA is the one who will be doing all your grading, so it's honestly more important to have a good TA than professor lol.
Midterm and final were on his own theories, lectures were not engaging, and the class/grade is entirely TA-dependent. The course material itself can be dry and lacking relevance, especially the emphasis on calculations.
Langebacher is actually a joke. I am so upset I took him for CPS. To have a professor teach from an unpublished textbook is one thing, but to have a midterm (25% of grade) based entirely on our understanding of his UNPUBLISHED THEORY THAT IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY ANY NOTABLE POLITICAL SCIENTISTS is something else entirely. Grades are entirely from TAs
Whoever else is teaching CPS, take them. Grades come entirely from TAs, but there is no clear rubric before the midterm or paper, so must GUESS what guidance he's given them. The "math" final is actually just algebra on a calculator, so 35% of your grade is how quickly you can use a calculator. The cherry on top is that his lectures are boring.
Grade TA-dependent. Easy midterm (you have a prompt for in-class essay to prepare beforehand), long research paper (start 2 weeks in advance), and math-based final. If you can do basic math, you'll be fine. Lectures are unnecessary because you aren't graded on the content. Interesting guy and can be funny.
Entirely TA-dependant grade. His lectures were usually pretty engaging, but after the midterm, attendance is way less important and you're fine missing most (if you can understand the formulas). 25% in-class essay midterm, 30% 15-page research paper, 35% weird but pretty easy final, and you know exactly what to expect on all. Definitely good choice
Politics and Memory with Langenbacher is definitely an accurate introduction into the SFS. Langenbacher is very well spoken and knows a LOT about memory politics, with his specialization in Germany. Three 5-7 page essays and a 12-15 page final. Readings are dense and his tough grading is unclear so it helps to go to the writing center.
Just kinda bland and slow, his class is a drag. Take cps with the other guy
Took the 5-week summer course. He's egocentric, biased, and goes on tangents. Seems like he hates questions. Curriculum is based on his own textbook and theory. Grades are TA dependent. Four grades: participation, midterm, group project, and final. Assignments are unclear (see other reviews). Don't read his book, he goes over everything in class.
He is a genuine and thoughtful professor! He cares about students understanding the material and has lots of valuable experience to help students understand the concepts better.
If you know how to be an echochamber, take his class. His "master narrative," which you'll spend the midterm eulogizing, is sensical but excluded the histories of almost all of Africa and all of Latin America. His textbook is pretty digestible though, TAs are chill
you don't have to do a single reading, just understand lectures. memorize his "master narrative" before the midterm and you'll get an A, a 20 page research paper that you get almost no guidance on, and a final that's 70% math 30% essay. attendance not required at all, especially after the midterm. very hard, but if you work hard you'll do well
