Dr. Malina is very good at teaching you the material. He can frame complex subjects in terms that are easy to understand for the average student. His class is still hard and you're still going to have to work to get the good grades, but an A isn't impossible to get. I struggled in Chem 109 but practically aced Malina's 110 course.
I took Malina for Chem 110 last semester. The course was extremely easy, but I am now in organic chem, and i realize that i didn't learn anything in 110. If you want an easy A, take Malina, but if you're planning on using chemistry in your future, you won't gain anything in this course. I felt lost on the ACS final.
Malina's chem 110 class was easy. My friend is in the same class right now with a different teacher. He wanted help with online homework, and I had no clue what he was learning on 21 out of 24 questions. I think I missed out on a lot of valuable concepts. Easy doesn't always mean good-especially in a science class-I don't recommend him.
An unfortunate disappointment for the chemistry department
I thought he was very helpful and made himself available to answer all questions. He is also a lively teacher for the most part and was rarely boring. Overall, I thought he was a great professor!
He was one of my favorite professors! I had to work harder for this class than any of my other classes, but I learned a lot, and I am actually able to retain the information. I would definitely recommend him!
Shouldn't I have learned more in chem221 than I did in chem110? This course was taught very superficially - and I thought analytical chem was all about detail?? It was easy, and lecture was waste of time if you know how to read. Nothing new if you have taken chem110 from a good professor.
Great guy. Down to earth and made it bearable. Fair and wants you to understand what's going on. Speaks clearly and write well on dry erase board.
Very thorough, really cares and wants people to do well. I learned much better from him than I have from any chem teacher before him. 5 stars!
Malina is one of the best teachers I have ever had! He's extremely helpful, as is the BOOK! don't blow off class... it will screw you over because of PRS questions. They are worth more than you realize!
This guy is an amazing professor. I think hes the best teacher I have ever had in college. Do the work, don't get behind. If you are confused go in for office hours he makes himself very available.
Dr. Malina was a very thorough teacher. He was willing to do anything not only get a student a good grade but also to have a solid understanding of the material. He was a great professor and I learned more from him than any other science teacher so far! Keep it up!
Grunts alot, but good teacher.
Very nice and makes jokes a lot. Messy handwriting, but he explains concepts over and over again!
He is a really good teacher. He is good at explaining an extremely hard subject.
Dr Malina was over all a good teacher, i am friends with his children and they are a sweet family and my rating is not bases on that relationship. He explained things really well and is over all the best chem teacher i have ever had. i hope he goes far in his teaching career
Great professor and makes understanding chemistry much easier. If you go to class everyday, which you should because you can raise grade up to 4% just by doing so through extra credit clicker quizzes, you will understand chemistry. His test are challenging but as long as you go to lecture everyday you will pass with little studying.
Great professor. going to class is very important but if you go he explains everything well
Wonderful Professor. Excited about subject and this helps students, even if they are not interested in Chemistry. Fair in grading policies. Very approachable by students. Office hours were generous and also generous in spending time speaking to students.
This guy was awesome. The best General Chemistry proffessor at UNL. He is very approachable and easy to understand. You really get the feeling that he's on your team and trying to get you the best grade possible. Great guy, but even better teacher.
Dr. Malina was one of the most interesting and easy to understand professors I have had. He is very willing to help and an all around nice person. He wants to help his students succeed and wants all to do well in his class. I would recommend him to students who have never taken chemistry or to students that are more advanced. Love him.
Pay attention and go to class or else it will not end well for you. If you go to class and focus, the class goes smoothly. He is extremely fair and helpful.
Easily the best GenChem professor. Its easy to tell that his first degree is in HOW TO TEACH chemistry, the second in..c.hemistry. Extremely clear, writes out notes with the class, working out problems as we go. It's extremely rare to find a prof who doesnt use powerpoint as a crutch these days and you'll love the fact that he doesn't cut corners.
Great professor, very helpful and reasonable, subject is not easy but he explains everything in depth
very good at teaching the material, and when I needed help with less clear topics, he was extremely helpful
General Malina is the best teacher in the entire world. He is one handsome devil and a chemical genius. He wears Levis 501 which means he's down to earth. He's always in his office and willing to help. Take his class. Do it or you will be demoted to priavte first class in charge of the outhouse.
Where to start? You have 3 hours of lecture each week of which you must attend every lecture your lose points, you have 3 hour unmissable labs, recitation quizzes, online homework, tests on days you DON'T have class, and textbook problems to do. Makes Chemistry way too much work. Don't take if you like free time, or you have other classes and work.
Huge disconnect between what's in the book/homework vs. what Malina teaches in class. Take good notes then become frustrated when working homework problems as he hardly touches what's actually in the textbook and what is graded. Prepare to be frustrated and annoyed, oh, and be prepared to spend an obnoxious amount of time out of class.
Great teacher. His lectures were clean and well rounded. Everything was described very well. I wish my biology teachers were this good.
he is a greatteacher, he will do whatever it takes to get you to understand the material, he always puts out extra practice, and is just a really nice guy
Attendance is taken by random clicker quizzes. If you ask for help you'll receive it. You seriously HAVE to study, not a game. I didn't study enough (you need 1 hour a night) and my grades show for it. Online homework is a little sketchy and takes a while to do. Don't just answer the questions, you really have to understand concepts to succeed. :3
He is the most helpful professor I have had at this University. Deffinetly use his office hours he is so willing to help and he wants to get you to understand the material. Not once did I feel uncomfortable around him.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Our section consistently had the lowest exam average. When it we got to the acids and bases section he taught us a method that made no sense. All of my friends who took Dr. Kautz's section said the method he taught was so much better.
Dr. Malina was so wonderful! All of my friends that were taking the same class with different professors ended up sitting in on his lectures because he was the best prof. for gen chem! He will explain everything different ways until everyone understands concepts.
His tests for quantitative chem had some tough questions that required good understanding of the concepts, not just the math. He's a very helpful teacher, though.
As a former high school teacher Dr. Malina is able to boil most concepts down to easily digestible segments. However, he will push your limits on tests forcing you manipulate concepts quickly.
When Malina teaches 221, the course revolves around the lab. As long as you have a rockstar TA for lab, you're golden. However, you also have to know the conceptual material of the lab inside and out for the tests, which is where most people struggled. Overall, good class. Malina understands the stresses of being a student and is accommodating.
Dr. Malina was the best professor I've had. He actually cares about the students doing well in his classes.
Attendance was not mandatory, but you get points for attending and answering clicker questions. Always clear on what is expected and always willing to help. Do homework, attend lecture, and go to recitation to get easy points.
Dr. Malina is an excellent teacher! He explains things in class very well and is always willing to help students. He does take notes on the board so class is mandatory to do well. You can tell that he really enjoys teaching and is truly interested in students. He is the best teacher I have had an UNL and I would highly recommend any class by him.
Best Chemistry professor I've ever had. Very clear and helpful.
Dr. Malina was simply best chemistry professor I've had, making concepts easier to understand than my high school teachers could. I attended his office hours frequently, and I could really tell that it gave him a sense of pride when the concepts clicked. I would recommend him to anybody interested in taking a chemistry class at UNL
Always willing to help students. Expectations were/are stated very clearly.
Very nice professor. Explains things very good in class. Just make sure you do all you can outside class to help! He will answer any questions in class or in his office. I should have taken more time studying, so it my fault I got a C, not his.
Dr. Malina is super helpful and truly cares about his students. He is somebody that wants to see you exceed and will be there to help as often and as best as he can.
He was a great teacher. Very helpful when you come in for help. He sits you down and walks you through steps until you understand it.
Great professor. Made me enjoy class even though it was difficult and a lot of work. Wants us to succeed. Very explanatory in lectures. Adds a bit of humor every now-and-then also.
Difficult material but he knows how to explain it so students will understand and is literally willing to sit with you and explain over and over again until you get it. His tests are hard but he is willing to work with students and bring your grade up if you deserve it. Best teacher I've had in college so far
Dr. Malina was good at explaining things and seemed excited about the material. He always stopped to answer any questions students had. He also had a good sense of humor. i would recommend him to future chem students.
Dr. Malina is a saint. He is ALWAYS willing to give extra help to students who need it. He specializes in chemistry education rather than just the science like many professors, and he comes from a high school ed background, so he knows how to help students understand tough material. Easily my favorite teacher at UNL so far.
Malina was awesome. He was very clear and his lectures were super helpful. If you miss class, it's hard to learn what you missed. Reading helps understand the material.
Dr. Malina is okay for Chem 109. Since this is a harder class, I would recommend someone else!
Malina is always there for his students and he cares about how they are doing (if they do). He is a great instructor and gives objectives to focus on in each section.
Malina is a great professor. I agree with the others; he definitely knows how to teach, and isn't just at UNL for the research opportunities. In lecture, he isn't a normal "powerpoint" kind of guy, he actually takes the time to write out equations an concepts. He's always there for you if you need extra help, and even with him sustaining an injury!
Dr. Malina is so helpful and kind, he's a saint. My mother became really ill and I was missing lectures and he sent me notes and allowed me to makeup exams. And he teaches, like ACTUALLY TEACHES instead of just reading words off of a PowerPoint. Would definitely recommend. Such a sweet, smart individual.
Best and most helpful professor in my experience at UNL.
He's a great professor, especially for how large the classes are. If you ask for help, he'll be more than happy to help out. He is very good at explaining things so that it's easier to digest. I'm not very good at math whatsoever, but I still managed to pull a B+, so if you work hard, you'll do fine.
Dr. Malina is very willing to help and clarify any confusions you have you just have to ask! Even though the lectures are large he will not continue lecturing until he has answered all the questions from the students have on the current topic. He also is very clear about what is and is NOT on exams. He works through a lot of examples in class.
He is a great professor and from what I have heard from other sections of Chem 109, it sounds like he is the best one of the bunch. Malina makes the concepts very clear and is always able to answer questions well. His humor grows on you too.
Dr. Malina was simply the best professor I have had at UNL. He was always so willing to help whenever you needed and wherever you needed. He teaches using the board, which I absolutely loved, and he explains things so well and actually TEACHES. Doesn't just read off a powerpoint. He is extremely smart and the nicest man you'll ever meet. Loved him!
There's a homework assignment every week. There's 2 extra credit opportunities-do them! He's VERY helpful! I went to his office hours everyday & asked questions. He's great at responding to emails. His lectures are straight forward. You'll NEVER feel prepared for an exam no matter how much you study. Definitely do the practice exams & book problems
Dr. Malina's lectures were very organized and he took time out of lectures to answer questions anybody had. I went into his office hours several times and he was incredibly helpful! The class itself is difficult but if you study and go in to office hours to ask him questions it helps a lot. I would definitely recommend Dr. Malina!
Malina was a great professor. Probably one of the best in the Chemistry department. His lectures were informative and for the most part easy to understand. If you review and take practice test the exams shouldn't be too hard.
Malina is one of the best chemistry profs.
Even though I really don't like chemistry, I still wanted to go to class because he was such a good teacher. He definitely wants you to do good, and is super helpful if you ever go to office hours or send him an email, that type of routine.
He is a great teacher. he does a great job to explain things and answer questions even in a lecture hall!
Even though he is not my professor that's indicated in MyRed, I still went to some of his lectures and mostly office hours. He is SUPER nice and so helpful even if he knows I'm not his student. I can tell he LOVES teaching and LOVES what he is doing, and I respect that in a professor, b/c a lot don't care about teaching.
Dr. Malina is an excellent professor, and probably one of the best in the university, let alone the Chemistry Dept. I took this class as a Junior, switching to Pre-Med, and although the exams (especially Spring exams) are excruciating, Dr. Malina presents the material in a very intuitive manner. Record the lectures and take additional notes.
Dr. Malina is fantastic. CHEM109 is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but I would have done way worse with a different professor. His lectures are very clear and engaging. He is always willing to help and is such a genuine guy. Taking him again for CHEM110.
Absolute best professor I've ever had, wish he could teach every class I have to take!
LOVED having Dr. Malina... He gives great lecture notes with lots of examples. What makes his class tough is that he is very conceptual based rather than having you memorize facts and pointless formulas. He will ask multi-step problems that combine all of your thinking, but you will do well if you keep up on material and attend lectures!
Dr. Malina is the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had. He really enjoys talking about the subject as well and clearly outlines everything on whiteboard.
Good guy. His doctorate isn't actually in chem itself, but rather TEACHING chem. Fair tests, fair grader. Can teach chem like no one's business. My only complaint is MasteringChemistry, and we all know how that goes.
This wasn't an overly difficult chemistry course but he was an amazing teacher and I am planning to continue with him as my instructor next semester.
Really clear lectures, makes difficult material easy to understand. Cares about helping everyone pass. Need to go to lecture, not many PowerPoints. Exams are fair and online homework doesn't take too much time
He's always willing to help, no matter how busy he is. After he covers a topic, he asks the class if there's questions over it and if there is he takes time to explain it in a different way to help with understanding. He also writes the notes on the board so it slows down the pace and makes things easier to understand as well, and gives examples.
Dr. Malina is the best professor you could possibly get for CHEM 110. Not just because of his lectures (which are clear and concise) but because he genuinely cares about teaching kids how to grasp material. If you get the chance to go talk to him during his office hours, he'll make you the center of his attention until you understand everything.
Very caring professor! Office hours were very useful and he wanted to help you learn! iclicker points used for participation at beginning of class. Test files useful for studying for exams as practice. Online homework was long and boring.
I had Dr. Malina for both CHEM109 and CHEM110 and I would highly recommend him. You have to work hard for an A, but he is fair and teaches the subject matter well.
Clearly writes notes on white board and explains very well. Combines multiple learning objectives in a single multiple choice question. Exam averages below 60%. The easy lab, clicker points, and online irrelevant hw boost test scores. he's very helpful in office hours and helped me improve test scores and really cares about success of students
Dr. Malina is a very good professor, not only does he take the time to thoroughly explain the subject, but he also does it with a spring in his step and a smile on his face. If you are someone who usually struggles with understanding Chemistry, I would highly recommend Dr. Malina. He is an excellent educator type of routine.
Hes great in lecture and really makes sure you understand the material and keeps you engaged in learning.
While Chemistry is a tough subject, I thought Dr. Malina did a good job providing examples and keeping lecture as interesting possible. Really nice guy. Tests for Chem 109 weren't written by him, so those were challenging, but lab and homework help with your grade.
Best professor I have ever had!! He does a great job of explaining the material. Exams are hard, but he prepares you for them. Genuinely cares about his students and is willing to work one on one if you have any questions. He pauses throughout lecture to answer any questions without being asked to. If you can, choose Dr. Malina. Best decision ever.
Dr. Malina was an AMAZING Chem 109/110 professor! His notes were always easy to follow. Definitely not the typical "read off the powerpoint" type of teaching. Very responsive to emails and would go out of his way to answer questions. Exams are very challenging , so study! Class is a must for attendance and notes!
His lectures aren't boring and he has a way to make each one interesting. Each lecture is important because you will get lots of examples that will be on exams. Don't skip lectures and get as much homework, extra credit, etc. That way you aren't struggling to get that C to pass the class. CHEM 109 is not to be joked about and can be hard but doable
Dr. Malina is hands down this best professor I have this semester and one of the best professors I've had at this university. What I appreciate most is how he treats all questions as valid because he knows that students understand things and learn things in different ways. He will never make you feel dumb for asking a very simple question.
Dr. Malina is one of the best professors I have ever had during my whole college career. He is very good at explaining the concepts. He doesn't every make you feel stupid for asking questions. He is kind and friendly to the students. He is also very accessible outside of the classroom. I wish he taught every chemistry course.
He is the one of the best professor Ever. I took Chem109 and now 110 and I am planning to take Chem 221 with him also The test are tough, but he is really good in explaining the materials . Always available outside the class and respected. He would spend the whole day to make sure you understand.
Heavy lecture take notes he will cover everything on the test in class so you do not necessarily need the book but it is recommened
Dr. Malina is hands-down the best professor I have had at UNL. Although the class can require some effort, Dr. Malina is always available for getting help and he genuinely cares about his students' successes. I wish that he taught all the chemistry classes because he is such a great professor! A+++
Malina is a great prof hands down. If you dont understand something he will work with you for as long as you need. He just wants people to learn chem and does a good job at doing so. He is pretty straight forward and doesnt over complicate things or under explain them either.
Great teacher, gives information that is relevant for the tests only. Gives good examples
What a wonderful man. Loved professor Malina and would take him for 110 in a heartbeat if he wasn't already booked full. He takes the time to answer any and all questions during lecture so you will never leave without having your question answered if you choose to speak up.
Dr. Malina made CHEM 109 easy to learn. He truly cared about how his students were doing in the class and if you didn't understand something he would take the time to explain it to you during or after lecture. I wish I could have him for 110.
Malina is a great professor which want his student to be HAPPY and SUCCESSFUL .. I encourage everyone to take his chem classes .. YOU WON'T REGRET IT ..
Dr. Malina is incredibly approachable. He genuinely cares for the subject matter and his students. He will remember your name if you tell him.
You have to show up to class. Not for attendance, but purely for the fact you have to be there to learn the material. If you put in the work, it will show in your grades, and Malina does everything in his power to help you out.
Dr. Malania makes chemistry understandable. His lecture style includes writing important notes on the board along with you so you're never struggling to keep up or get information down. He uses real-life examples to help with the conceptual aspect of chemistry. Very good at what he does and seemed genuinely interested in helping students.
Malina is an amazing Chem teacher. He writes the notes on the board so you have the exact information you need. Make sure to study outside of class though because just going to lecture is not going to get you a good grade.
Malina is a great chem professor. Every day, he writes all the notes on the board and goes in depth to make sure every important topic is understood. Paying attention was easy, as was learning the material. Participation points are taken through the use of clicker questions, which are helpful in learning material, as well. Overall, would recommend.
Pros: Dr. Malina conducts a clear and well-organized lecture that covers the basic concepts and makes connections between them. Cons: There is less problem-solving during lecture, so don't assume you have chemistry down just from that. Be prepared to do many problems outside of class and utilize the Resource Center for help working through problems
Eric Malina has to be the best Chemistry professor I have ever had. He is very intelligent and caring. This man was born to teach!
If you have to work 30+ hours a week, struggle with chemistry, or have 10+ hours of classes, this may not be the best. I had to work over 30 hours a week, plus 12 hours of classes, with this one being the most demanding. I felt like he didn't cover what needed to be covered to do well on exams and a lot of time needs to be spent in the resourcecntr
If it wasn't for his great style of teaching, I would've changed my major a long time ago! He is the best professor ever! It's very helpful that he writes the notes on the board along with you during lectures, he's very understanding of circumstances, and he truly cares about his students.
Dr. Malina is always there to answer your questions and really wants his students to succeed, but if you dont read the textbook and do the practice problems, you will barely understand what is going on in the class. He explains stuff well but his lecture notes are all over the place so you must pay attention because they are not posted.
Dr. Malina is awesome. He explains things well in class, but be prepared to review lecture problems and practice book and recitation manual questions in order to master the concepts. Is one of the kindest if not the kindest and most understanding professor I've had. Don't be afraid to ask for help, is is always willing to answer questions.
Dr. Malina is a fantastic lecturer, he presents chemistry concepts in a concise and easily-understandable way. I would gladly take more classes taught by him.
If you are taking Chem 109 you MUST take it with Dr. Malina. He makes the class 100% more clear. He is the real MVP. TAKE CHEM 109 WITH ERIC MALINA.
Dr. Malina is the man when it comes to Chem. He knows his stuff and is great at explaining it. Very clear in lecture and fun to listen to. Ive heard the other Chem 109 teacher isnt great, so would HIGHLY recommend Malina. Hes also very understanding and willing to work with you in just about any situation!
He's an awesome professor! He really understands how to teach students material and makes it interesting to listen to. He's really an awesome guy.
TAKE MALINA!!!!! Not only does he know his stuff but hes SO good at making the information easier to understand. Midterm is by far the hardest exam so know that going into the class and if you work hard, study, and read its not difficult to get an A
He's the best chemistry lecturer at UNL. The class is hard because it's chemistry, but he's great at explaining things and making sure to answer questions.
Hardest class Ive ever taken, but I absolutely love him! Hes so amazing. Hes the best teacher Ive had in my life and I lucked out by taking his class. I had never had chemistry in my life and so it was difficult but honestly it was made doable by malina.
Dr. Malina is amazing at answering questions and breaks down concepts so that they are very clear. He understands that students often struggle with chemistry and tries very hard to make each concept easily understood. Would definitely take a class taught by him again if I had the chance.
Great lecturer. He does write the exams so when teaching he gives points out what to go over and what will be more important to focus on. He is all about concepts. Dr. Malina, teaches well but informs us in the beginning of the semester that objectives are a big thing for exams.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor! He is absolutely the BEST professor at UNL and he is very caring and wants you to do well. If you go to his office hours or email him and set up a meeting he will take his time to ensure that you understand. 10/10 highly recommend.
Absolutely an amazing professor. I love they way his lectures are set up. Instead of clicking through a powerpoint like most, he takes the time to write out his notes on the board and they are very informative. He's very kind and always willing to help students out. I highly recommend him for CHEM109&110. 10/10 would recommend
The main grades are through tests, but he'll replace your lowest test with your highest test grade. Attendance taken through clicker questions. Very helpful on explaining material in class and outside of class. Offers a few bonus points on exams. Enthusiastic about the material. You have to work for your grade, but pay attention and you'll pass.
He is the best professor Ive ever had in my 3 years of attending UNL. If you have to take Chem109 or 110 I HIGHLY recommend Malina. He walks through all the concepts and objectives per section. He makes sure you understand the material before moving on the next. When exam time comes, he really knows how to help you study.
Dr. Malina was a great professor for CHEM110. He cares about his students and does not want them to fail. I got the textbook but hardly used it; it would be good if you want to read more in depth or do the textbook problems but is not necessary to pass the class.
literally the best professor at UNL. I've never seen someone care so much about students. I started CHEM109 not knowing who to take it with, numerous students including my advisor recommended Malina and wow.. I'm so glad I listened. You can always go to him, he'll always listen. He also drops the lowest grade exam and replaces it with the higher:)
Dr Malina does an amazing job of baby-stepping you through his course. He explains topics for students with a wide variety of scientific experience and basically suffocates you with useful study materials (online exam prep, extra/optional recitations, etc). He also handled the transition to online better than any of my other professors. He's great.
The best professor that I have encountered at UNL in any subject. He goes at a very steady pace with his handwritten notes every lecture. Before moving onto a different objective, he asks the class if anyone has questions. Very flexible with office hours, highly recommend choosing Malina in Chem 109 or 110, no matter what.
He was a great professor in a very hard class! He actually cares about each student and generally wants everyone to do well in his class.
Best ever
Literally the best professor I have ever had. He understands that Chemistry is difficult, but finds a way to make you understand it. He makes himself readily available to help, and seems to have the best intentions for his students in mind. I struggle in chemistry, but Malina made me like it, and do good in the course too.
Dr. Malina is one of the best professors I have ever had. This man is a true KING. He is great at explaining difficult concepts that the average person won't understand on the first go around and if you still don't understand, he will help you out. We only have 4 exams for the semester plus the final, which is not bad at all.
There's no doubt in my mind that Dr. Malina may be the BEST professor at UNL. He is so thorough with his handwritten lectures and always offering to help during lecture, office hours or via email. Gen Chem is a tough course but Dr. Malina really makes things so much simpler, wish he taught Organic Chem!
Best professor I had this semester, he provided so many resources for studying and did a great job explaining concepts in the easiest way for us to understand. If you are taking gen chem, he is the way to go.
Dr. Malina is by far the best professor at UNL!! If you are taking chem 109 or 110 definitely make sure to get Malina. His lectures are extremely easy to follow along to and you can tell that he truly cares about his students and their success. 10/10 recommend!
I really loved CHEM110 with Dr. Malina. He had a great way of explaining concepts and makes it clear what must be known for the test. I recommend doing a lot of practice questions, like the recitation manual and old exams. I am usually hesitant to reach out to professors, but Malina was always very kind and happy to help.
Dr. Malina has been one of the best professors that I've had at UNL. It is truly evident that he cares for his students and wants them to succeed. He explains concepts very well, which is very good! He is also very accessible outside of class, and he has even sent practice exams to people through email. I highly recommend Dr. Malina!
Chemistry is definitely hard, but Malina makes good videos for us to watch and gives lots of practice exams. The class is 75% exam-based, but he does curve the grading scale, so as long as you have a 60% in the class you'll have a C. He also takes the average of the lowest and highest exam and replaces the lower score with that.
Dr. Malina is truly one of the best professors I've had. It's obvious that he genuinely cares about his students success, and he works very hard to give you all the materials you need to be prepared for exams. While the course is exam heavy, he does a great job of lining up exactly what you need to study, and is always willing to help out!
Yo his lectures do not cover the hard equations on tests, all of his examples are easy while on tests they are nothing like the notes. Also his tests are overwhelming and the recent one had an average of 54% and all he says is as expected LIKE NO majority of your students are failing and you should not say as expected. Thank you for my tedtalk
This class is definitely a challenge,as it should be, but this teacher is not handling his job appropriately. He has gone on multiple vacations over the course of the semester, and he does not offer help for students struggling. He simply posts the video and forgets about it. He does not grade his homework himself, and leaves canvas to do his work.
4.6/5?Fake reviews. This is by far the worst pro I have ever had. His students average 58% on exams and his response is "it's always been like this." You should know you're not doing your job right. He goes off canvas answers and no partial. He goes on vacation while we're taking exams. He does not care about his students at all. Don't take him.
If a professor says that an average score of 58% on an exam is "normal", then that says something about the class. In order for students to pass the grading scale is moved back with little proper preparation for exam, which make up 75% of your grade. I was helped by 3 coaches and still did not perform as well as others. Do not take this class.
I am a non-traditional student and was pretty tentative about returning to school, I knew that I had long forgotten information and spoke to Dr Malina about it; he was more than accommodating, and was encouraging when I was feeling like I was drowning. Hard work and perseverance definitely paid off, especially since this is a "weeder" course.
Dr. Malina is the worst professor I've had so far. It's like he wants his students to fail. Tests are worth 75% of your grade, the course load is insane (especially if you have work on top of all your other classes), and he has the mindset that he's not doing anything wrong as a teacher even though the class averaged a 54% or 58% on his test.
He is a terrible professor. I had an issue once and emailed him with a question. He was very rude in his response and it seemed like he was intentionally trying to make me feel stupid. Unless he made an error on a test question, he never took responsibility for things. He also went on vacation several times, even right before finals.
Malina is a nice guy, but his class is ridiculously hard for no reason. There are 1,000 possible points. Exams make up 750. Homework is 150 and yellowdig is 100. Exams were closed-book and on lockdown browser. I felt that the exam problems were significantly harder than what we went over in the content videos and lectures. Would not recommend.
Chemistry is super difficult but passable because the grading scales makes a 60% a C. Dr. Malina was very well-spoken in his lectures and explained concepts in an easy to understand way. I recommend using the textbook anyways, as the reason I failed all my tests was because I didn't practice enough, so take his advice. Still passed though.
Dr. Malina is an excellent professor. He does so by fulfilling the two things that makes anyone good at what they do: he does his job well, and he is personable. For his CHEM 221 summer class, I mainly used his lectures and supplemented with the textbook in case I didn't understand anything. His communication is excellent. I'd highly recommend him!
Definitely a fun class to be in. Had an 8:30am and didnt consider skipping (that much). Pauses frequently for questions and welcomes all questions and would love to go over things again if theres confusion. He definitely knows what hes doing and has a great setup for his class with clicker questions and always welcome for after class questions.
Prof. Malina is amazing when it comes to simplifying concepts as much as he can. The course itself is hard, but it is definitely easier with him than any other professor. He is really nice when you have the time to sit down and talk to him. He is always willing to help!
Made lectures not boring and explained things well. Take a lot of notes in class that he writes on the board. Compared to other professors hes probably the best. Does fun demos.
Dr. Malina is the best professor I have had. He explains everything in a way that is easy to comprehend. I have gotten high As on all the exams because Dr. Malina is great. My best advice is DO THE OBJECTIVES IN THE RECITATION BOOK! Key to getting a good grade. If you know those, you will do well on the exams.
Great professor to take if you have the chance! Lectures are VERY helpful. The homework is online and never had trouble figuring out the problems. When I did want help, I went to his office and he would stop what he was doing and explain it to me in a way that made sense. Study his practice exams and practice material and you'll do great.
Malina was a great 109 professor, although sometimes I think he could have explained things better. He is easy to listen to and accessible. Literally just attend class, get your recitation points, do practice exams, and you are golden.
Good pacing and great explanations and examples. One of the best chem professors I've had.
I can count on one hand how many professors I know that actually care about students learning the material as opposed to just trying to get you through the semester. Actively works to make sure you pass. If you go in for help he breaks the question down and simplifies it to the point that a toddler can understand what you are teaching them.
He is the worst professor I've ever had. He seems to favor and praise the 'A' students rather than prioritizing good teaching and helping those that are making an effort, but don't have an 'A.' When I ask him questions he makes me feel stupid instead of just being helpful. He could handle things with much more kindness than he chooses to.
Malina is the best professor I have had. He care so much about teaching and it shows. He always is open to helping students understand things that are challenging. There are so many opportunities to get points and improve your grade. He is so easy to reach and is always willing to meet with you to work on things.
He was a great professor. Since he writes his notes on the whiteboard, it is very important to attend class every time.
Dr. Malina is a great professor. Make sure you come to class so you can get the clicker points. Exams can be difficult so make sure to study a lot and do all homework and previous exam tests. ACS exam as final is difficult so don't rely on it to increase your grade. Overall great professor and he is very accessible outside of class if you need help
I had second year chemistry with Malina over the summer. As someone who struggled in chemistry 1 he makes concepts so much easier to understand. He was willing to work one on one with me and was always a sweetheart at explaining stuff. 10/10 one of the best professors at UNL!!
Dr. Malina is one of the most caring professors I've had the pleasure to work with. He is almost always in his office ready to help students. His lectures are well put together and usually include a funny quip or two. Although CHEM110 was at 8:30 am MWF for me, Dr. Malina made it my favorite class to attend. Get help early and practice!
I was very skeptical of Dr. Malina coming into this semester, I had him for CHEM 109 and I was very disappointed. But then again I was taking it online, I came to this semester hopeful. I can happily say that I was not disappointed. Dr. Malina was very caring and really took the time and effort to help his students. The lectures may drag, but 10/10
I've already seen he's got plenty of good reviews and I agree. He's good at getting material down and is good at making sure everything is understood especially with a lecture hall of 150 students. Great guy even better teacher. Tho since he did such a good job I stopped working hard so I didn't poor at the end of the class which was only my fault.
I took his class back in the 2012-2013 time frame. He has been one of the best professors UNL has ever got. Before him, I took gen chem twice and I still failed. I finally passed gen chem and it is all due to his great lecture. He is so patient even when you ask the same questions over and over. He really cares about students. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Dr. Malina is an AMAZING professor. Definitely go into his office hours whether that's for help or just to meet him! He is super friendly and helpful! His exams are somewhat hard but as long as you study well for them you'll do fine. Definitely choose him for your chem courses!
One of the few professors who's actually a teacher and not a researcher. His lectures teach you everything you need to know, all you need to do is review notes and practice problems. Malina and TAs are very accessible for questions. One of the best professors I've had yet
Professor Malina is the best teachers in the UNL Chemistry Department. He handwrites all of his notes on the whiteboard during lecture, which I found extremely helpful. Just by paying attention and studying the material you should easily pass the class. As someone who got an A, the exams are pretty difficult and I had to study about 10 hours.
Dr. Malina truly cares about his students. His lectures are great and helpful, if class is behind he will cut things out. He wants his students to succeed, he gives all the resources needed. Chem is going to be hard so study and you will do great.
Dr. Malina is an amazing professor who is always willing to make time to make sure you understand the material. He is also very flexible and understanding, and his lectures are done with board and marker, making it very easy to follow along and take notes.
Malina is a great professor. The course is tough and requires hours on end for a good grade. Lecture is a must if you want to pass. His content videos help you get ahead and/or relearn content. Go to the chem resource center lots for extra help. Taking him for 110 too which tells you how much personally I enjoyed the way he teaches.
Malina is a great professor! He speaks very clearly & concisely and rephrases things as long as you ask! Personally, I didn't read the book and relied solely on the homework assignments, recitation notebook, and lectures and did well in the class so I can say that reading the book is not by any means necessary. Overall, take him for chem!
Dr. Malina is one of the best professors at UNL. He writes everything on the white board in such a way so it is easy to follow. If anyone has any questions he will try to answer it the best he can. You know what to expect on exams and he shows the curve on exams. He is the reason I am doing well in chem.
If you aren't the best test taker, this is the class for you. Every single exam had below a 70% average for this semester. He provides grade calculators and if you get a 65% on every exam you finish with a B-. Very caring and respectable professor.
This guy is amazing. Great at teaching, the way he lectures perfectly leads you into great note taking. I have registered for Chem 110 with him next semester and I more excited than scared since I know he is the instructor.
Good professor, but hard class overall
Dr. Malina is a caring, respectful, and thoughtful professor! Favorite professor so far! He does an amazing job of explaining an otherwise difficult concept. One homework assignment due per week (easy). 4 exams and one final at the end of the class. Would take another class with him!
Dr. Malina is a fantastic chemistry professor! He writes on the whiteboard to slow down his words, and he always made sure to cover the concepts that would likely be on the exams. I definitely recommend Dr. Malina for CHEM-109 and CHEM-110!
Dr. Malina will do everything in his power to make sure you succeed. He cares about your future in chemistry, and he is willing to spend hours outside of class to make sure each student can succeed. He has office hours every day of the week, and if you are willing to put in the work there is no way to fail this course!
Dr. Malina has been very fair and transparent about what is expected from students. The class is just really hard. Aside from CHEM109 just being difficult, Dr. Malina makes everything else fair and easy. If you have an issue just go and talk to him it will get worked out.
Dr. Malina really wants the students in his class to succeed. You are expected to come to class and his lectures are pretty easy to follow. Every class you do a clicker question that is counted for points and can be a really useful tool for study for exams.
Super good professor. Always ready to help with anything, and provides tons of resources on canvas. Exams are hard but if you study and get help you'll do well.
Very positive and always seems ready to help with problems.
He's really nice and loves what he does. Take a lot of written notes and answer the in-class questions for credit. 5 exams total and he takes your lowest exam score and averages it with your highest. Sometimes he'll try to squeeze in a little too much new information with only a couple of minutes left in class, but it doesn't happen often.
Such a passion for teaching and amazing working with students.
11/10
One of the best professors I have had. He is super helpful and always willing to answer questions. I would recommend this professor for all chemistry classes.
I don't like the idea that he doesn't use PowerPoints.
Amazing professor. You have to go to lectures if you want to do well, but he makes lectures enjoyable. You can tell he has a passion for teaching and he really does care about his students and their grades. I wish he could teach every single one of my classes. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
He goes over each chapter in detail and posts a video explaining each chapter online for extra help. I've told everyone taking 109 to make sure they get him as a teacher. He hand writes everything, so he goes slower and takes time to explain. He is happy to meet outside of class and help anyway he can. It's obvious he loves what he teaches.
Chem221 was a pretty hard class but Dr. Malina is incredibly nice and accessible outside of class. Get ready to attend lecture and the tests are pretty hard.
I love the structure of Dr. Malina's class. He is very clear in expectations and ways to succeed. Anyone can be successful in this class because of the ample study resources provided. It is also obvious that he loves chemistry AND has an education background so he knows how to teach. I would take Malina again if I could.
Dr. Malina was a great professor! Chem is a very hard topic and he did a good job explaining. He hand writes his notes so you have to take notes while you're there. I'd prefer slides to look back on though. Tests are worth 70% of your grade. Unit exams have 15 mc and about 8 free response. Final is all mc and is a national exam. Study hw problems.
Chemistry was never easy for me but Dr. Malina made it that much better. There is a lot of content that needs to be covered so make sure to show up when you can. Utilize office hours and the chemistry resource center. If you take the lab, it lines up with the lecture material about 90% of the time. I found that lab was easier than class.
He's really nice and easy to talk to. He's really passionate about what he teaches and really generous with the curves. He lays out everything really clearly and has plenty of office hours.
He is an incredible teacher! He has a way of explaining really complicated topic into a "dumb down way" he cares a lot about his students and wants you to come in and talk to him. OPEN DOOR policy to any students who needs help.
He's a super nice guy and cares about his students, chem was a really hard course and he would let me cry in his office lol. But he has very generous curves and tries his best to make it as simple as possible but you have to be willing to try and put a lot of effort into the course.
There's nothing I can say that already hasn't been said, Dr. Malina is an excellent professor. I had him for CHEM221, so for some advice for having him in this course is to remember that he is always accessible outside of class, explains things very concisely and very well, and you need to study on your own as there is no lecture homework.
Very good and goes through lecture notes at good pace; very thorough. Prepares you well for exams
Door is always open!
Amazing professor. I didn't have the greatest chemistry teacher in high school, and I was able to understand everything. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, but he made all concepts easy to understand. I needed to study a lot, but his lecturing definitely helped!!
Quizzes every 2 weeks. Not a lot of busy work. Clear grading criteria and entertaining lectures.
Eric Malina is the most awesome person I have ever met. Great professor
Dr. Malina is an amazing professor and his lectures are fantastic. He makes chemistry easy to understand. The door to his office is always open for students with questions.
Chemistry can be difficult but Dr. Malinda teaching style helped everything make sense. The class has lots of extra points built in so a good grade is possible. Exams are every other week, and pretty easy. With them being so often, you are testing on stuff fresh in mind, rather than preparing many weeks of information. Overall an amazing class!
Easily the best professor I've had while attending college. The lectures are always entertaining but always provide the necessary materials in order to succeed on the exams. He helps summarize well and going over the practice tests helps prepare for every exam.
Hands down the best chemistry professor ever! I have taken both chem 109 and 110 with Professor Malina and I would take any class he teaches. He not only has a degree chemistry, but a degree in TEACHING chemistry. It is evident in how well organized his notes are. Just make sure to turn things in on time, study, and go to the resource center :)
Easily the best chemistry professor at UNL. He keeps lectures easy to understand and entertaining to listen to. He is very caring about his students and has THE BEST notes. They are very well organized and makes things easy to review later on. He will curve a test if the average isn't up to his standard. His classes fill up fast so sign up ASAP.
Dr. Malina cares so much about his student! The class 109 and 110 are hard but if you embrace the grind you can do well. GO TO HIS OFFICE if you have questions early on! He will provide extra questions and exam prep questions.
He reorganized the class this semester, so labs/homework/tests were written as we went. Due to this, there were no practice exams, when he did post helpful material. it was the day before the exam, leaving students no time to study it. A little disappointed in him due to this, but at least the next semesters will have the material now :/
I liked that Dr. Malina was willing to help students with calculations in lab. He was always willing to help when the TAs were not able to. These labs are graded on accuracy, so I would recommend attending his if you need help.
Dr. Malina is a professor who truly cares for his students and tries his best to set us up for success. He is very understanding of students' concerns and is very accessible outside of class. I personally was not the biggest fan of his lecturing style, as he certainly catered his lecturing to students that needed help the most.
super great professor explains very well
Prof. Malina is very approachable and passionate about the subject. Attend his office hours and utilize Unstuck study AI for extra practice - it really helped me ace the exams. The class is challenging but doable with dedication.
While I had difficulty with the course, I can acknowledge that it was due to my own failures. Malina hand-writes notes on the board, which makes it so much easier to follow along—especially for a note-heavy course like this one.
BEST professor I've ever had. Genuinely cares about his students and wants you to do well!!!
One of the best professors at this school. He explains every single concept thoroughly and he also lays out exactly what is going to be on the exams. But the best part about him is that he truly is a great person and actually cares about each of his students. He's a great professor on all levels we love you Eric Malina
Malina is 10x better than kautz if you have to choose between the two. There are many opportunities to do well in the class even if you don't do amazing on the exams. he listens to feedback and always provides the easiest way to solve questions and simplest terms of concepts so that you do not cram your brain with things that won't be on the exam
Loved this class, and the way he taught things. I thought it was a great balance between lecture & material. More points are offered than needed, so as long as you do average on the test you should pass with a good grade.
The best professor for 110 cource! Lectures are interesting and not boring. Good thing is he writes everything on the board, so students have time for notes. I had unique situation with final exam, when He letted me take exam earlier with no problems and different option of the time! Definitely would recommend him for your lecture in the future
For Chem105, pay attention to the objectives he writes on the board, they're literally guidelines for quizzes and exams. He writes everything he teaches in the board so going to lecture is important. He a throws in dad jokes and is entertaining. He teaches in a way that makes it easy to understand the concepts he throwing at you.
Great professor. Being a non-STEM major, I had to take this to fulfill an ACE requirement, but it was very easy to understand. As long as you attend lectures, do the practice problems, and attend recitation, you will succeed. Dr. Malina is very accommodating with absences, extra time for exams, etc. I would take it again!
you can tell he's here to teach and does a great job.
Dr. Malina is goated. He has helped me so much as an individual this last semester progress and grasp nearly complete understanding. I'm confident that Dr. Malina may be one of the best professors I will ever have. He's funny, wants you to succeed, and provides the most helpful materials. Do NOT miss the opportunity to take his course.
Dr. Malina may be one of the best professors I will ever have. Do not miss the opportunity to take any of his courses. You will learn, grow, and maybe even surprise yourself - but Dr. Malina is an absolutely professional at assisting you along the way. He hand writes - making note taking easy and not rushed, he's kind, and lifts his classes up.
Dr. Malina cares for his students. If you're struggling, try to attend office hours because those help a lot! He takes his time lecturing all the content you need for the exams and allows time for questions after lecturing for a bit. If you want to do well, attend lecture and go to his office for any questions you have, even for the homework.
He is a good professor, nothing more needs to be said.
such a good professor but the material is just so hard. uses iclicker for attendance which is nice because you can get the points without being there, but trust u want to be there!
Dr. Malina is the best professor I've had in college so far. He does an amazing job of explaining difficult topics, lectures at a great pace, and makes it very clear what you need to do in the course to succeed. Over the course of the semester you can definitely tell that he cares about his students and is passionate about what he does.
Pretty good professor. It's a hard class, but if you lock in right away and ask for help when you get behind, he will help you pass.
Dr. Malina handwrites on the board, so it is easy to follow along. He makes the material very understandable. I found this class to be one of the easier ones I have taken for my major. The lab can be tedious but is not difficult. If your major allows you to take this class instead of 109, do it!
