Excellent teacher. Very difficult.. must know details, but he is very enthusiastic about subject. VERY FUNNY!!!! Very personable.

Though his tests are not that bad he has a funny way of grading in that he's not that flexable with regrades. He doesn't waste time with subject matter that is taught further in other classes General Microrganisms means just that and it's what is taught.

Tests are hard but he's very clear and concise.

Good teacher, i recommend...you are expected to know very fine details from the laboratory manual...but if you know someone who has taken the class, ask to borrow their tests...its mostly the same questions...overall..a good teacher.

it's definitely passable- just memorize the notes. the tests are so impossible though- getting an A is unheard of in that class

Dr Mann is pretty much the most inspirational professor I've ever had at UCD. The style of his teaching seems simple but in comparison to the other professor that was teaching mic102, Dr Mann teaches in such a way that can never be duplicated.

I think Dr.Mann is the best teacher @ UCD. Overall, he is very clear and extremely helpful. You know exactly what is expected of you and he makes it very interesting. And the moron who made the comment about nazi's and the holocaust is a lying jackass.

Dr. Mann is the most incredible prof I have ever had. He has such a wide background which makes him so interesting. HE repeats ALOT, so get a hold of his tests! Just memorize old tests and you'll be fine!

Dr. Mann is a riot and you will learn a ton from him, but his classes (102 and 102 lab) are tough. Lab is easy to pass but demanding in time & busy work. Both classes are boring if you are not a micro major. Memorize notes to pass the tests!

Exams are very hard, but look at the practice tests it should give you a good idea what types of questions and answers he likes to ask. Know everything..everything. Don't fall behind or you will be in deep trouble.

Tries to impose morals, can be a bit offensive, stories a waste of time - if you have old tests - you are set cuz he tends to repeat a LOT of questions so you may/may not learn something

a pretty entertaining professor...his tests r pretty hard if you dont have the old tests plus he likes to get really creative with the questions..so you gotta read a buncha stuff before you actually get to the test question...i would recommend to peeps who choose lectures over hard tests!

Ridiculous amount of work. Makes you turn in a copy of lecture notes right after lecture and even marks off on YOUR LECTURE NOTES. Marks off points for grammar, spelling, not underlining, etc. Tests are tricky. He can be offensive. People told me its a fun class, but it's not. Oh he has "favorites".

I loved this class! if you have a fascination with microbes, take this class. Dr. Mann is an excellent and very enthusiastic, fun professor. The first midterm caught me off guard due to its thoroughness of the material. If you study and pay attention to the small details you'll do well.

I took dr. mann's class when he taught at the university of michigan, and I really loved the intensity of the class; it really forced you to stay on top of the material; great notes and great professor; one of my favorites from u of m-GO BLUE!!!:)

Greatest lab professor ive ever had. His tests arent curved, but he gives you all the answers in the reader, you just have to look at them. I highly recommend Mann for MIC 102, not the other guy.

Dr. Mann is probably the best professor I had at Davis. He knows his stuff, he's friendly, and he's just a great guy overall. I don't know anyone that took a class from him that had a bad word to say about him. The class can be a little tough because there's a lot of info to know, but he's very helpful and willing to work with all schedules if you need help. I took three classes from him and loved them all.

Greatest teacher that ever lived! Lectures are fun and interesting. I went to lecture not because it is a must, but because his lectures were really interesting. Throws in jokes in between lectures and makes the class easy to comprehend and sit through. 2 hour lectures, but usually lets us out 15,20,25 or even 30 minutes early. Great!

Awesome! He's one of the most enthusiastic teachers at Davis. The labs are very hands on. It's one of the best labs I've ever enrolled in. Dr. Mann makes an effort to talk to EVERY single student in his course. I love Dr. Mann!!!! Get sample tests from people.

I had him for the lecture and lab and I loved both his classes. They're hard but he makes it very interesting. He doesn't curve but if you study well, you won't have a problem passing. I'd love to take him for all my Mic classes!

I loved his class. The rumers of no curve is absolutely true. He goes by the strict traditional percentage scale, and it is kind of hard to study for his tests even with the list of questions he gives you in advance. Studying & re-reading the course pack right after the lecture helps a lot. He stays after lectures until everybody is satisfied

Awesome teacher and awesome guy. Took him twice, first 102 then next quarter the lab. He's not easy, you have to work for it. But you know exactly what's expected. He just enjoys teaching, he's not out to fail you or anything. His tests are in a way to challenge and force you to think. It's not so much remember facts but rather working with them.

Very good professor! Highly recommended. Assigns homework (which is not due)... and midterm questions are straight from the homework and from the practice midterms!! Funny stories, I definately took a lot from his class.

Dr. Mann is a great professor; very knowledgable about the material. But you're graded by your TA; there's a ton of busywork, and no curve. Exams are extremely tricky and require you to know lots of details. The research paper will also take you tons of time. It's a class in following directions; if you can do that, you'll be fine.

Get old tests, but you can't simply memorize questions if you want to get an A or a B. Do the HW and don't procrastinate and you will do just fine. Very interesting lectures also. Beware, you have to bust your a$$ to get an A, but its def. doable.

102L: LOT OF WORK! Try to have a light schedule. Dr. Mann is by far the nicest and funnest teacher. Class is not hard but very interesting. You will learn a lot. Just do all your work. Don't stress about doing poorly on exams (they are tricky), the lab points more than make up for them. Fat paper due at end worth 100pts. Prepare early for it.

Awesome lecturer. Absolutely enjoyed his lectures. Lab with him was extremely interesting as well. I highly recommend him for both. True, his tests are not curved, but if you attend lecture and spend time studying his lecture notes, you'll do fine. Exams require logical reasoning, so memorizing only won't do it. Tests are great, like the fact that there is a story to it. tests are basically in chronological order. Fun class, never wanted to miss lecture. Information learned will stay with you for a LONG time.

I love his lecture! His anecdotes will make you remember the information and he does whole-class participations sometimes. He has two tests; add your points up and divide by two and that is your grade. I thought tests were hard because little nuances make the answer right. Also no curve, but its def manageable if you put time into it.

I LOVED this class! So much so I was thinking of majoring in Microbiology. He is amazingly funny and has anecdotes that relate to what he's teaching. Very funny and a good lecturer. Each lecture was entertaining and went by very quickly. It is important to go to every lecture and study each one very closely to do well on multiple choice tests. Your entire grade is based on 3 MC tests, that are not culmulative.

If you have to take micro, take it with Mann. He has a great sense of humor which makes sitting through a two hour lecture much more tolerable. When he tells you to study early and often, he really means it. He also has a photographic memory and will always remember who you are. Labs are usually pressed for time so work quickly and efficiently.

I love Eric! Such enthusiasm, passion, humor, and energy - there's no way you'll fall asleep in his lectures. Labs were interesting and fun, but there was so much work required in so little time :( I worked a fair amount for a solid B. He requires an insane amount of detail in memorization for his exams. This guy is hilarious. A wonderful lecturer. Before taking this class, I really didn't have much interest in microbiology, but now I love it! the history of each disease is interesting and kind of random, but i prefer that stuff over studying the biochem aspects of microbio... Lab was really fun. Study lots. Reader expensive, but worth it I guess.

I agree with other comments, he is a little arrogant, but he is a funny guy who keeps you entertained during lecture. He talks really fast so it is helpful to bring a recorder. He likes to write an outline on the board before class, USE IT! Also, his exams can be tricky so memorize the little fact. All around good so science/non science ppl alike.

While the tests are a form of cruel and unusual punishment, this is the most fun I've had in any class ever. I came out wanting to take this professor again. Dr. Mann is my favorite professor at Davis! He provides you with all his notes in a reader so you can just fill in with extra info during lecture. Labs were kind of stressful since they were timed but still interesting. He's hilarious and I always looked forward to lecture! Tests are very tricky though because you need to know small details.

He lectures straight out of the course packet (no textbook req.), but that does NOT mean skipping out on lectures is okay. Besides, his lectures are interesting! Easy class which is history-oriented. More suitable for non majors. Professor is funny, witty, humorous, and knows the material extremely well. Always talks about his life as a flight attendant and often shares his previous experience prior to being a professor. A must-take class!

One of the best classes at UC Davis was MIC 101 with Dr. Mann! Prior to taking his class, I thought, "Bacteria are so boring." But I was soon proven wrong. I ended up enjoying going to lectures because they were clear and easy to understand. His enthusiasm and the useful study tips he gives are incredibly helpful. Changed my mind about microbes!

One of the best classes at UCD. Class is fun and the class notes are very well-organized and clear. Attend each class early to take notes on the side of the class notes and you will do well on exams. Also refer to the old exams there are going to be some questions appear on your exams.

Finally. A teacher that understands how to actually teach students and WANTS them to understand the material. Lectures are absolutely hilarious, informative (often on subjects outside of microbiology), and crystal clear. And as an NPB student who has taken 10+ labs...this is by far the most interesting and best set-up lab. TAKE THE CLASS.

Mann is a funny and interesting lecturer. There is a lot of information to remember and his tests are multiple choice. Lab is actually fun and easy. Easy to get a B in this class but harder to get an A.

One of my all time favorite professors! Mann is funny and gives very interesting lectures. I hated microbiology before, but I now have a solid foundation and interest in the subject. Be sure to come to lecture even though he posts the notes-he goes into detail on the notes and tells you what is important to study!

Best Professor I have ever had at UC Davis, bar none. His lectures are very well organized, very informative, and very entertaining. Be warned: the class is not curved, and the exams require you to know a lot of very specific information rather than just general concepts, but it's worth it in the end. Made me want to add Microbiology as a 2nd major

Great Class, but packed with massive amounts of info!Dr. Mann is very entertaining so going to class feels more like treat than a chore. To do well in the class: 1). Read through the clourse pack before attending class. 2). Know everything in the course pack. He takes section from the notes word for word. 3). Open lab/office hour is very helpful.

Dr. Mann is infectious like the bacteria he teaches. His passion and enthusiasm for the subject really got to me and going to his 6-8pm lectures despite the late time was something I was dearly looking forward to. He makes learning so FUN and EASY. Multiple choice answers come straight from the coursepack. STUDY PRACTICE EXAMS!! Dr. Mann's stories are so entertaining, albeit sounding irrelevant in the beginning but actually relating it back to class material. Labs aren't difficult. I actually find it the funnest lab class I've taken.

He is a wonderful teacher. The test material is straight from the course pack. If you study the notes you will do great on the exams. The final is not cumulative and there isn't a textbook for the course. He made the lectures very entertaining and the material very easy to remember. This was a great class.

Professor Mann is so dedicated to this class and you can tell. He gives you exactly everything you need to know in the lecture notes and lab so you don't need the text. It's worth it to go to class, when you go back and study you remember his lectures. I recommend staying on top of studying, it's a lot of material. Lab and 3 midterms, no final.

Took the last class of MIC101, now it's called MIC102/103L. He is AMAZING. Sign up for his class RIGHT AWAY. You won't regret it. Promise. There is NO CURVE so make sure you are reading his coursepack (he provides them) every, single, night. Tests are taken directly out of the coursepack (3 exams, no final). Lab is fun/EASY if you read the manual.

Mann was pretty good. I mean the class is super simple since it is just a micro lab course, but he brought some humor into the lectures and homework. Entry visa are long, tedious, and often just busy work. Often unapproachable, somewhat rude and sarcastic during lab, especially if you mess something up.

Professor Mann is amazing! The first thing you might notice about him is that he quotes Star Wars all the time. He is super funny, super clear, and extremely passionate about microbiology, and you can feel it. Take his class! You will never regret! His is absolutely amazing!

Dr. Mann is great. Very clear lecturer that really cares about his students' success. Extremely clear on what he wants you to know and is very approachable. Practicals are very easy. Ace all the visas, know the lab procedures for the exit exam, A for you.

This class is awesome! Dr. Mann makes it very easy to get an A as long as you do what you're supposed to do. Going to Open Lab on Saturdays also helped a lot because the tutors help you refine your lab skills. )

Of all the professors I had the pleasure of meeting at this University, Dr. Eric Mann is the one who who shined the brightest. Dr Mann is hilarious, very entertaining and informative! Take him for MIC lecture if you can. Memorize his lecture notes and notes in the lab manual and listen in class and you will get an A, just make sure you memorize those random little details. Come up with weird mnemonics. No curve.

Had to work hard to get an A in this class. Course is out of 230 points so every single point matters as there is no curve on anything (exams or practicals). 2 midterms, essentially 3 lab practicals, and 7 entry visas (pre-labs). Strict grading on entry visas and make sure not to plagiarize lab manual. Long as you pay attention every lab, ur good!

Dr. Mann is like an ex-military, yet cool, microbiology grandpa. This class required more effort than I had hoped for 2 units, but the fact that he's so entertaining made it bearable, dare I say enjoyable. Just do what you're supposed to do and you get at least an A-.

Really interesting professor. Lectures are straight-up his notes that he posts ahead of time. Only three midterms, no final. His exams are very similar to his practice exams, but still read his notes since he can easily distort thee problems. His lectures are a bit quirky and funny. His study guide is identical to his midterms. However, he doesn't give answers so you have to find it yourself. Very easy class all I did was memorize the answers. It would be helpful if you had a friend who took it previously and had the test materials because he uses the same tests.

I'm a humanities major but decided to take the class as a GE. I loved Professor Mann, the material was pretty straight forawrd if you studied for the midterms, super easy to get an A with a bit of studying. His lectures aren't mandatory but I recommend going because he's super funny and gives good examples to memorize things better totally 12/10

Dr. Mann did a good job in writing his own lab manual. He incorporated a lot of cultural references, which made the class more approachable. My one dilemma with him is that he focused on details that seemed so trivial, though he is such an experienced microbiologist. Just keep that in mind: you need to know more than the big picture - know details.

The best professor I have ever had in UC Davis. He was kind, patience, and very smart! He would sit down with you after class just to go through everything you need to know for exams. He is super clear in his instructions and he is always there to encourage you to learn. He is amazing. Definitely take him for MIC 103L.

Make sure you really do well on your pre labs because each one is 2% of your grade. The material itself isn't hard and Mann is a hilarious professor but make sure you know the details of every single lab inside and out for the midterms. Not a hard class, not a walk in the park but on the easier side if you put in the work and do your stuff.

Tough class, a lot of materials for a 2 unit lab, so get ready to spend some time studying for the exams and for your pre-labs. I got 40/40 for both midterms form reading every word on the lab manual. Going to class isn't necessary but reading the manual is a MUST, everything you'll ever need to know for this class is in there. READ THE MANUALS!!!

Read his annoyingly wordy lab manual! It is required if you want to be able to complete your pre-lab questions (entry visas) and midterms. Points are very easily docked off on entry visas so always double check with your lab mates (clan). Labs are fun and fairly quick. Mann is surprisingly funny.

The class itself is pretty interesting, but the lectures were a bit boring. He is a great professor though, super funny and gives some helpful analogies. I didn't go to most lectures as he posted the notes word for word online. His exams are almost exactly the same as the previous exams he posts, so do those!! Just 3 exams, no final.

I took MIC10 as a GE and it was the best decision I made this year. Professor Mann is the best I've ever had at Davis. His lectures are informative and funny, and the professor has tons of interesting stories to share. The exams are straightforward and you can tell that he really wants you to succeed. Definitely use his practice exams to study!

The best professor you'll meet at UC Davis. He was easy to understand and even though attendance isn't mandatory, you won't regret showing up to his class. The class was very easy, there are 3 exams worth the same amount of points and as long as you study the practice exams, you will earn an A.

If you need an extra unit for financial aid in Summer Session, definitely take MIC198 with Dr Mann. He designed the class just for that purpose. It was asynchronous, he posts funny podcasts about immunology/virology. Literally ALL you have to do to pass is make a poster. It doesn't even have to be a good poster.

Really good professor, genuinely cares about students. The online text via McGraw hill is annoying and all homework is done there. Great lectures but lots of reading. Tests are fair.

He is both knowledgeable and entertaining. His lectures and manuals have random jokes everywhere, it takes some getting used to. Hands down the best teacher I've had. TA's grade all the work, so your grade depends on who/how harsh they are. 2 tests, weekly individual AND group assignments, and a final group project. I'll genuinely miss this class.

This class was really fun, and the homework assignments weren't too difficult because all the answers are given in the lab manual. Tests are all from the lab manual too and, though a little confusing, doable if you read carefully. There's some group work and a group test at the end of the quarter, but it's all very easy and repetitive.

it's a tough class but if you put in the work, not bad at all. don't know why so many people from my quarter complained when it was just repetitive, straight-from-the-lab-manual work. professor is kinda quirky and makes weird references but you can tell he's passionate about the class. tests were easy if you paid attention to the hw.

Class graded on 2 midterms, a group poster, a group virtual zoom test where you identify a bacteria, and entry visas (hw due before lab) and transit visas (groupwork). Second midterm is much harder than the 1st. Lab results do not really matter so focus on the exams.

Dr. Mann gave his recorded lectures through podcasts with sound bites and personal stories. Some lectures were more interesting than others, though. He gives a study guide for each MT and the MT is almost identical to the study guide. Some questions were different, but they can be easily found in the lecture notes he provides.

Professor Mann was truly a great professor. All lectures were in podcasts but also you could attend class in person. Only graded based on 3 midterms, there is no final for this class. Do the study guides!!!! It is the same as the midterms other than 1 or 2 questions being different but can be found very easily. Overall a great class and an easy A.

Dr. Mann is a great professor. The class consists of just three exams, no final! Exams are very similar to the study guide exams so it was very easy to get through. His podcasts were fun to listen to and he had very interesting stories to tell during lectures. You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. Would recommend :)!

This lab course was definitely easy to get an A in, the only struggle may be how strict your TA is with grading. But Professor Mann was present in every lab of mine and he demonstrated everything and was available to help. Lots of group work with your lab group in and out of class. The exams were very similar to the practice, so easy to do well on.

I love him. He's so funny and makes the content fun to learn. Everything you need to know is in his provided files and it helps so much that everything is color coded for us to understand better. I would love to have him again as my professor!

I loved taking this professor! He's very funny and does a really great job at making material both accessible and digestible. This was easily my favorite lab I've ever taken, and I'll miss it next quarter. He really cares about his students and shows up to every lab section to support the TA and students.

AMAZING AMAZING MAN! Super easy class, like unbelievably easy idk how people got anything less than A-. Online tests, lectures not mandatory attendance, labs always got out early what more is there to want. He deserves all the love in the world so funny and all you have to do is be organized. Put no thought into the class and still got an A.

This class wasn't too bad, one group assignment per week and 2 midterms. Make an organized set of notes and do the practice test and look over it with others, and you'll be good. Grading of the group assignment depends on your TA, but most are pretty laidback graders. Lab usually gets out an hour at the latest

Cool professor! 2 midterms MCQ, lab practical , and lab reports. No final. As long as you know the important pages or have them memorized, the midterms will be easy. He provides lots of studying resources use them for the midterms! You get out of lab an hour early! No curve. Overall easy. Recommend!

He puts so much effort into his lecture slides and notes (putting colors, pictures, fun facts, everything!) -- you can tell he really cares about the structure of his course and the user-friendliness of his documents. He's super entertaining and has a very bright spirit, which made the class so much fun. Open note tests --> low stress (:

literally if only every lab at Davis was with him. super easy labs and you get out early all the time because they're easy, fun and finish super fast. he goes through everything in so much detail it's impossible not to do well.

I think everyone should take MIC010. While some of the microbiology content can be very technical and confusing, the history of the diseases is fascinating. Dr. Mann is one of my favorite professors and is very knowledgeable and entertaining. He has a lot of valuable life experience and I would encourage everyone to talk after class with him.

Although he's quick with explanations, he's clear on what to expect in lab and exams. Provides a demo at beginning of each lab and you get out early every lab. TV are a pain but MOST of answers are in manual. Exams are online and similar to practice. Class ends 2 weeks early and practical is what he calls 'easiest 6 points of your life" (ITS TRUE)

Professor Mann makes this lab super engaging with his fun Star Wars references. Exams focus on lab material, so staying on top of the demos is key. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for practice!

Graded on lab skills and 2 exams (multiple choice on Canvas). Exams were fairly easy (open-book) but had some tricky questions. Posted a practice exam but no answer key, so had to ask your TA for answers. Overall an easy lab course. Get a good lab group. You'll be out of every lab an hour early, & can split the work for the lab practical (on Zoom).

What can I say, he's so awesome. His tests are basically impossible to fail due to clear access of study guides and past tests. If you fail this class then maybe just drop out because I think he truly wants everyone to pass. I would take another one of his classes in a heartbeat if I needed to! Take this class with him you won't regret it.

I genuinely had so much fun in this class. Unlike chem labs, Dr. Mann's labs are exciting and encourage group work and real understanding. Lectures are optional, but you'll miss out on his stories if you don't attend. I will remember material from this lab for so much longer than any other lab because I enjoyed it so much. Plus, love his emails.

Cool guy and easy class. Never studied and got an A+, take it for a GPA boost.
