unfocused, unclear, uncaring
His online classes are difficult but not impossible. There are only 5 papers. You can email the paper to him and he will read it and give suggestions before the due date. Portion of the paper grade seems to be if you follow his suggestions and email the paper to him.
Online class is tough. Be ready to read a lot and write even more. I think there was 4 required books for the course. Lock yourself in a room for a whole semester if you want to do well.
Both classes were not too difficult. He wasn't very clear as to what he looked for in papers. Even if you made the corrections it didnt raise your grade. I turned in a paper to be revised and he said it was C quality. I didnt make any corrections on it, turned it in, and he gave me an A. Not sure if I would take him again.
He is really fun and interesting. I think that the tests were fairly hard and the papers were graded somewhat harder than most other teachers. If you are looking to really learn though, he is the one. He is genuinely interested in and loves History.
Great teacher, a little hard (but so is every history class). I would definitely take his class again.
Good professor, but he needs to research religions a little more before teaching about them because he claimed something untrue about my religion and I didn't really appreciate it. He's pretty tough but fair.
Does NOT need to be teaching. Took the online course. He believes that he can just copy and paste directions for 5 different papers and not teach or interact with students. I sent him three emails asking about the first assignment and never got a email back. I dropped the class since it appeared HE forgot to attend. Masters degree lvl, not AA.
he is a hard grader...but I learned a lot from his class...he helps teach you how to write a good term paper...he really knows his history and isn't boring in teaching it...the tests are a little hard...but trust me its worth it in the end...I really learned a lot in his class...it was a good class to take in my Junior year in Highschool
he is a very good instructor who makes what you are learning eays to understand and something interesting...as for being hard..i dont really think he is..i mean he gives you an outline of test and tells you exactly what are gonna be on them..pratically wrote the essay question for us...funny guy with great quotes from the simpsons and family guy...take him if you want to know history

He sucks!!!! He doesn't explain ANYTHING!!! I will never take him again!
talks on and on and on. Tests are unfair and way too stressful. I will never take him again.
i took his online class and i didn't have time to do anything. he gives more work to an online class then his regular class. most people take online class because they work, he thinks people take them because they don't feel like going to school.
This professor gives a REDICULOUS amount of work to his online students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANY OTHER CLASSES.
I really enjoyed Dr Mayer's class. Anytime I had a question he was always willing to help me.I took both of his classes online and I enjoyed both of them. He tells you Exactly what you need to do for your essays and he doesnt beat around the bush about anything. He tells you what needs to be done and there is no question if you read your sylabus.
He's a pretty good professor. Lectures are interesting, but he's somewhat biased. The class is easy to get through if you just ask him for help.
Awesome, very intelligent!!
Really good teacher. One of the best!
This class sucked. I really enjoyed the lectures and I learned a lot. Problem was that we had to wrtie a lot of these 5 page papers and the grading was unfair. He started off by saying that the whole class would gets As and Bs, id say most people got Cs
when i first read the syllabus i thought the class would hard, but it wasn't as hard as i thought. I took it online and would take another one of his classes again. the grading was fair. I'm not a good test taker so i liked being able to write papers instead of having to take a test.
Very difficult class, and you must be dedicated! There are about 5 long essays that need to be written within a week or two of each other because it is such a short class. I learned a lot and he is a great professor, but definitely put some time into this class or you won't get a good grade.
Isn't clear about what he is teaching.
He was a great teacher, his lectures were clear and interesting, and he has a lot of personal experience with some of the areas you talk about. There are quite a few essays but they are that difficult and he's a pretty easy grader. You do need the textbooks for sourcing your essays but you only HAVE to read two of them
Watch out for his assignments and be sure to do exactly what he asks. Your essays do not need to be very deep. Citations that you may need to use will be very hard to find in his readings as you may only find 2 cites from the book. Most of his lectures will contain the answers.
DR. MAYER IS ONE OF THE BEST HISTROY TEACHERS I EVER HAD, I DID BOTH HISTROY 103 AND 104 AND THE CLASSES WERE BOTH VERY EASY AS WELL. JUST MAKEE SURE TO TURN IN ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS. A
Very good teacher I learned a lot and he was very helpful when it came to writing papers class was very injoyable.
Not the best instruction I've experienced.
Loved this class. The text used was interesting and actually loved reading it! I like that he has specific assignments and incredibly helpful and responsive whenever you need.
Mr. Mayer is very laid back, gives you all the information that you will need on a essay or an exam and has a very fluid teaching style that allows for easy learning.
This guy is hard. The entire class is based on 5 essays, each worth 20% of your grade. I am not particularly amazing in history, but I am an "A" student and always gets "As" on my english papers. I covered all the topics he requested, and reviewed my papers repeatedly with a fine tooth comb but still got a B on one and a C on my most recent.
Prof. Mayer is very educated but his class is boring and he assigns DIFFICULT WORK! Seems like a nice guy but he made us read this book that probably was a graduate level-type-of book! Mayer was nice to me but since I didn't understand and the class was dry, I'll never consider taking him again!
Very easy. I took it online. Only five papers, that's it. He grades easy and will read a draft if you ask.
Won't give bellow a C so if you don't like history he's your guy, but if it's your major it will drive you up the wall. I didn't know whether my A was really A work or if it was just an A or his wonky curve. But ya, good materials, and I learned alot
Online class: all essays; being a good writer isn't enough, he grades tough & gives ltd specifics about what he wants (not overly-approachable either). Class was all self-teaching, basically skimming books for whatever points he claimed to be looking for. You won't get any of your papers back. He merely sends back a number grade...nothing else.
6 week course: okay he is a very intelligent professor, however, I would not recommend this class! Attendance: you absolutely have to attend EVERY class or u will be completely lost. overall this is not a course that should be taken in a 6 week period. A lot of writing, reading and studying required.basically, take another professor
Pretty easy teacher if you do the work and don't miss too many of the important class dates. I pretty much did the work late but he said long as you turn it in and put in the effort you'd still pass and I did.
I took his 6 week class and it was extremely hard. He gave two papers and one final. Each worth 100 points, so if you know math that means each paper is 33.33% of your grade. It's very stressful. Other then that he's a very cool teacher, knows what he's talking about and his class is very interesting.
Very rigid.Wants EXACTLY what is outlined in essays.Disallows intelligent writing or self-structuring of essays.Help on critiques when you ask for reasoning?-expect two sentences of vagueness from his iPhone.Funny, considering outlines are elementary-no analysis.Impossible to improve grade, takes 5 mins to grade 1600 words, proof he doesn't care?
Took over summer..had to only write 4 papers..no using direct quotes(which is stupid because one paper is on the grapes of wrath)got A's on 3 of my papers..then got a C on one and ended up with a B..it was kinda BS..and he wants you to write like a middle schooler..not recommended..and he is very short with you..makes you feel inferior
Online summer course. Teacher was only fairly helpful, however if you do the papers assigned, you will pass his class. He grades roughly in my opinion, but never below a C if you give effort.
i really enjoyed his class. i took it online and there were only 4 assignments due. he was very helpful when i had questions on my papers and even looked them over before they were due and told me what i could improve on. i received an A in the class..i recommend him to anyone who needs to take history 117
Not easy but good teacher and keeps your attention in class extremely well.
I took the History 104 8-week course. It is VERY fast paced and there are only a few assignments that are actually turned in. Dr. Mayer does a great job of keeping the class's attention and gets right to work every day. He also helps with questions about other subjects as much as he can. I really enjoyed his class.
I took this class online. Being only 8 weeks long it was very fast paced. There are 4 papers due but he is very helpful and returns emails quickly. It's an easy class if you read consistently and write well.
I would NOT recommend Dr. Mayer. While the class isn't hard, he is incredibly stringent in his grading. When I asked questions about his reasons for a C on a paper, he suddenly changed the reason. I have a hard time with a Prof. who gave me a C on a paper apparently without any thought since the reason kept changing as I asked questions.
Not an easy class. His topics are extremely generalized, turning a 1,500 word paper into a 10 page paper to make sure all subjects are covered. Also, there are only 4 essays so if you fail one, you pretty much fail the class. Only take if you're willing to put in the time and effort. I received an A, not easily though.
Doesn't read the essays he wants a certain amount of words and if you don't do them to bad you fail. Horrible so far.
Make sure you do the essay correctly, how many words, grammar, how essays are properly done, etc and minimum u get is a C. Only 3-4 essays due in the clas & reply to posts. I didnt do any replying to posts. Just make sure u do the essay like he says. Shorter class but I like it better then a full semester 2 days a week in class.
I completely loved Prof Mayer! If you are a history major, or something related to that, take him. He definitely loves having interested students in class. He was really nice, and doesn't put too many high expectations on you. I had 3 assignments, Midterm Final and Book Review. Be prepared to write a lot for his class. Just a great professor.
He was the best ! I took him over summer and honestly was not bad at all ! like during class you don't even have to pay attention just study and you will be fine! His test are pretty crazy but he gives you almost everything to it! Very funny guy! and pretty sure if you are taking him during a normal semester his class is way easier!
very nice, funny, and helpful. pay attention during lecture and review and you'll be fine. for the midterm and the final, he gave us half the answers two days before, so it was pretty easy. the killer is the book review though: the text is difficult and reaching the word count is a struggle, but i still managed a decent grade.
Horrible to much writing
I really enjoyed Dr. Mayer's class. There is alot of writing involved. The 3 writing assignments were pretty straightfoward and Dr. Mayer is very helpful if you are not sure what you want to argue in your essay. Overall great class
This was a tough class but if you are willing to put in the work you will get a good grade. The professor offers to go over you mid-term paper up to 3 times and help you get an A on it. He does curse quit a bit during class so if that bothers you this is not the class for you. He was funny and fun and will take him again for future classes.
Great Professor. He is very fun with his lecture's very clear and descriptive you can just picture it all happening while he speaks. I took this class as an 8week. It went pretty fast, and stressful but I got an A+ on the course! The exams are memorizing terms but you get to choose from the list the ones you know! The 8page hegemony was alright.
Loved his 103 class. I am currently taking his 104. I received a B in the 103 class. The work is easy. Its an 8 week course. I find his explanations amazing and all you have to do is e mail him if you have a question and arnt in class and he is there to answer you. The only down sis since its 8 weeks the 3 assignments are due almost back to back.
Dr. Mayor is a very nice guy, but gives a lot of work. Be prepared to write a lot, an essay is due every monday night and you have a mid term essay of 2000 words and a final of 2000 words. He is still human and made a mistake, i questioned him about it and he upped my midterm grade by 10%! He's very nice but be prepared to write.
This 104 class is much like the 103. 8 weeks and the assignments are due close together. Lots of writing involved in the class but well worth it,
He takes a perspective of history that was most enlightening. I took 4 classes and never received a very good grade. But better than that, I learned that the history we consume as dogmatic truth often has another side to the story. The awareness of that other side has helped me look for the other side of the story. I very much recommend
Dr. Mayer is a really great professor, and expects a small amount of actual work when compared to other college professors. Its a very good class that is actually enjoyable and he makes it fun even though its 3 hours of class. Hes pretty helpful and will read multiple drafts of papers. Hes without a doubt the best history professor at VVC.
During his lectures, I had no idea what was going on because his timeline was out of order. He doesn't really give homework assignments. Although, you must study study study for the midterm and the final. You don't really need the big text book, but the small book is required for a long book review that's assigned. I got a B for the class.
Dr. Mayer is the BEST history professor at VVC, he doesn't grade difficult at all, and he really actually enjoys what he teaches. He can sometimes be a little spacey on his lectures as far as going in order but he gives clear dates. My personal favorite teacher I've had at VVC, he reminds me of a college student, hes fun and a joker. take him :)
In the middle of his 6-week right now, and I get absolutely nothing from his lectures. I have to study the lecture afterwards every time.
Took the online 118 class, and for the most part it went well. Clearly states what he wants from essays, and there were only 3 (each worth 1/3 of your grade). The problem is he he doesn't seem to read them and tends to give the same grades across the board for everyone. If you're fine with an average grade take this class, but if not be careful.
Dr. Mayer clearly knows what he's talking about and wants to impart that knowledge to you. He's got such passion for his topic and that makes the lectures interesting. Be prepared to WRITE in this class. He wants your best effort and expects you to put it out there. Your hand may hurt from note taking but it is definitely worth it!
Would not take this class again!
I took Professor Mayer's online History 103 course and it was really straight forward. The only work I had to do in this class was to turn in three 6-7 page papers and that was it! You really just have to know how to write in this class. He is not involved at all with his online classes, but I'm not sure how he is in person.
Took Professor Mayer's HIST 118 class online and had to complete only 3 essays for the entire class and nothing else. He was specific on what he wanted and graded accordingly. Essays are long but there are only 3 and that's it!
Dr. Mayer is by far the worst teacher I have had at VVC. I took him during the summer online. He would give me indirect and unusable critique for my essays and at times but simply respond with some unrelated information that would only confuse. His essay prompts are vague at best and what exactly he wants wasn't clear. I learned almost nothing.
I recently finished Dr. Mayer's fast class. The notes in the beginning were overwhelming along with many you tube videos, but the class was worth taking. He is good about answer questions Mr. Mayer really cares about the subject. His tests can be challenging so be prepared to study. Also along with a book report he will have you do.
The class is easy. We watched hour long videos and he gave a lot of notes but they do help when he hands out the study guides. I suggest getting the books early on and start reading Before European Hegemony because there is a whole essay on it. If you stay the whole class period, he may give you more info on the tests. It's simple to pass.
Only three 8-page essays. Follow his instructions to the T or it'll reflect in your grade. I doubt he actually reads the entire essay. Textbook is terrible but you need it for citations. I stopped reading the textbook after week 2. You have to teach yourself through online research because the textbook is so poorly written.
2 essays from the textbook and another is book analyze, so 3 essay for his entire class. Each essay is at least 8 pages. If you get a good grade, you should write 9-10 pages. He reads your essays for sure and gives us a grade each essays after the due.
The whole class only has 3 assignments, which are 3 papers. Though that may seem simple you are not learning anything and receive little to no feedback as to why you lost points on your previous assignments. Also takes quite sometime to get back to you with grades. Does not teach one thing everything is on your own.
As long as you keep up with the readings and get your papers in on time there should be no problem. He will give you feedback on your papers.
This one expects you to read his mind. Feedback is bare minimum so if you want to know why you got something wrong, you'll have to guess. Take someone who actually is a professor.
I took his history class over the summer and only had to do 3 essays but he grades harsh. He does offer revision if you email him the essay early, but his corrections are vague. You have to learn how he wants the essays written as you go which can be a problem because if you do bad on one essay, it's hard to get an A.
took both hist-103 and hist-104 with this teacher and got cs on both. not a bad teacher, but not that amazing either. 3 essays is all you do for both these classes. if youre taking these just for an easy grade, be my guest. if you expected to learn a lot about history, this is not the class for you.
I took his hist 104. I got a C because I was too lazy to study for a test. he is really nice and caring. he gives only 3 essays and 3 tests. you don't have to do notes because he give us a review sheet to study for a quiz. No H.W. He puts a history video everyday to watch.
He is a good teacher .He would read to the class and explain in different words when we did not understand. He is very understanding and will also give you a chance to do make up test or essays. But beware if you are not interested in history you will get bored. Over all awesome teacher.
I took HIST118 online in the winter. The class was pretty straight forward. 6 discussion posts and (2) 2000 word essays. Although I did receive an A in the class, I never got 1 word of feedback from the professor and I didn't know my grade know how I scored on any discussion or essay until the class was over and final grades submitted.
I took his history 115 online class and it was awful. He would take weeks to message back and then never fully answer all my questions. His grading was never the same either. I'd get better grades with very minimal effort then when I took my time. It was a very easy class only two 2,000 word essays and six discussion board posts. I learned nothing.
This class is absolutely terrible. You do not hear from the teacher throughout the duration of the class. His assignments are terribly thought out. 3 essays, 2,000 words each &6 discussion boards that have to be 500 words each. No feedback given &no material given to use on the essays. Sucks that he's the only teacher that teaches this class online
I took his online course in summer and it was great. There was a discussion post every week for the chapter reading, and a final paper on grapes of wrath and his lectures were online. He gives you the website for them in the syllabus. He will email your grade for the discussions not post them on blackboard. This course is good for a fast term.
Hated this class did not learn anythig, read the entire text book to write a summary on the chapter for a disscussion no lecture or other asssignments beside a book analysis paper on a book of his choice. i did not learn this way and do not recomend you will just "teach" yourself the course, not worth investing money in.
I took this online class for History 115 in the Spring 2020. I would NOT recommend taking this online class because it was so unclear what he expected and his online class was not set up the right way so everyone was always confused on what work we had to do and how to even turn it in. It was super unorganized and did not get any feedback from him!
I found this class to be easy enough to pass with an A. I took his class online and he uses a link to a different website that can be a bit clunky at times but gets the job done. Weekly summaries of the textbook and two essays required. Always got back to my emails in a timely manner. As long as you to the work you should pass no problem.
You have to read quite a bit, and write even more. About 3-4 Chapters a week and sum it all up. I ended up writing about 4 pages per assignment 8 assignments. You read then analyze the reading. You pretty much teach yourself. Straight forward. Hes big on intro, thesis and conclusion. not difficult if you're willing to put in the work.
I took Hist118 in Winter 2019 in a 6 weeks course, pass with a C. I just want to say that I love his class because he doesn't do much and the assignments are not to hard to do. There only 6 Discussions and 2 Essays, that's it. Make sure to buy the book to pass the class.
I took Hist115 in Spring 2019 in a 8 weeks course, pass with a B. I just want to say that I love his class because he doesn't do much and the assignments are not to hard to do. There only 6 Discussions and 2 Essays, that's it. Make sure to buy the book to pass the class.
I took his History 103 class and it was a lot of essays to write. Every 4 chapters you got to write a two page essay and mid book and when you read the whole textbook you'll have to write a six page essay explaining the rise and fall of each civilization with at least some accurate dates. If you're a minute late to turn in any paper it's a 0.
I was on the waitlist for this class (2018) apparently he added me to schedule for some reason idk how, but I got no email or message saying I was in the class. I figured out to late, tried emailing him but no luck. He does not care about his students. I failed a class I didn't even participate in at all.
only 6 discussion post and 2 essays 6 pages long easy balanced class.
There was a lot to read which was fine but his expectations are unclear. No one got 100% on any assignment throughout the semester. However; no one got less than a B so that's good? I just don't like it when teachers give vague responses and unclear instructions.
Took HIST 103 online. The course was simple enough, read 3 chapters a week and do a 500+ word explanation on the reading, write 2-2000+ word essays, and make sure you use correct format and grammar. The biggest challenge was the amount of reading each week. He was fairly easy to contact and worked with me to be able to catch up by the last day.
All this class is is reading and essays. You hardly learn anything. So, so boring. If youre a second late its a 0. Hes not very understanding.
WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN! -Does not answer emails -Gives very little feedback on how to improve essays -Not present throughout the 8 week course -Takes little to no effort to improve his class
Professor Mayer does not give due dates on his assignments, making it hard to determine when they are due. He is what I would call a "lazy" professor. Does not teach anything. He does not seem to care about the students education. Professor Mayer is very unresponsive.
I've never received a grade below an A until now. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He does not respond, his Canvas classroom is so messy, unorganized, and confusing, and he does not care about his students. The worst professor I've had by far. He is lazy, and does not teach, respond, or care. I can't express enough how bad he is. BEWARE!!
Not all professors are going to teach their class the same. Online class is 6 discussions and two 1500 word writing assignments. Use MLA format on the discussions and cite the textbook in main paragraphs ONLY ex... (Schaller pg.#). He won't tell you that until he grades your first discussion. His syllabus is unclear of expectations.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR If you value your grade and your sanity do not take this man. I took his class and I was dropped and couldn't even access the work. He still failed me and it is on my record that I failed his class even though I NEVER HAD ACCESS please stay clear VVC has so many caring professors and Eric Mayer is not one of them
I had Hist118 during the summer online, 6 weeks long. Each week we were required to read 100 pages then write 5-6 paragraphs giving a summary. On the side we had to read Grapes of Wrath and write a paper answering a prompt. By the end of the course there was also a final paper based on textbook readings. Be sure to take notes on the textbook!
I took a six-week course in the summer. We had to write about what we read for the week (usually a couple of chapters from the textbook) and his requirements for our writing were very undirect. Requirements are literally "Explain this weeks reading" every week for the course. Overall, meh.
Dr. Mayer is not clear about what exactly he wants from your work. I took the accelerated class, so there was tons of reading. I personally enjoy world history, but Mayer's tough grading and inaccessibility was discouraging. Trying to get a better grasp on what he was looking for, I had emailed him and never received replies. Get ready to guess.
I really liked professor Mayer, wish I could have taken him again. He is very encouraging and lets you use technology as long as you cite your sources. You learn a bit of history sure but you sure do learn how to write a good essay. I owe my essay abilities to him! He is very funny and tries very hard to connect with students.
