This guy really knows Africa. A fun, easy going teacher, but you can't blow off studying a little for his tests. He really built my interest in the subject. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN
No Comments
Amazing teacher! He is young but very intellegent. He is laid back and hilarious. I highly recommend him!
Eric was a very interesting teacher that knew his stuff. I took him during the summer and didn't do much. His tests weren't a piece of cake though, so you have to study the book.
he is a cool guy and cool teacher but talks way too fast for a normal human being to comprehend. his tests and paper are pretty fair and so is his grading. not a very interesting class so boring i ususlly used it for nap time
This guy's a friggin' genius. I've never learned so much in one class. He's young and very laid-back. Not too hard, but you must read the text thouroughly. Will definitely teach you something you didn't know. Highly recemended.
he is extremely intelligent. the guy knows like seven different languages and pretty much has a knowledge of anything you throw at him. he is a real cool guy. dont let his laid back style fool you though. he does expect the best work from you and grade likewise.
He is very interesting and passionate about anything he's talking about, so his lectures aren't completely draining. You end up learning more about the world than you ever thought you could. I would definately recommend him.
I had Eric for Ant2100 Spring 2005. He is animated and hyper when he lectures, but he's thorough and VERY passionate! I'm a Chem major, but this class makes me think twice about Anthro as a major. I learned a lot and appreciated his insights and opinions, which is pretty far left of mine :-)
I think that Montgomery is a very good teacher. He's actually kind of cute too. Well, in my opinion at least. He gives a very good lecture. Likes to talk about the world and it's problems. He hates does not like Bush for all you democratics....Yeah! He is easy if you do all your work and listen to his advice.
Very interesting person. A bit too smart for his own good though. You will learn a lot about the world and a tiny bit about the actual class.Don't bother buying books for the class you NEVER use them. I recommend him, but not Honors 2000. Crazy boring and just pointless.
He is very passionate, the most intelligent person Ive ever met. You learn more about the world than detroit because he goes off subject a bit since he is very passionate, which i liked. Highly recommended. He is kinda hot too
Very eccentric personality, passionate about his field, w/ interesting lectures. Grading is tough because he expects top-notch work. Like everyone said, "DON'T DO YOUR PAPERS LAST MINUTE". He can tell and you won't be happy with your grade. Make sure you go to him w/ your paper b4 you hand it in and take his advice on corrections that are needed.
opens your mind like a parachute and leaves you critically questioning all that you've been told or read
This man changed my life. His passion and overall knowledge of everything from religion to reace is amazing. And oh yeah, he is also an activist!
It is refreshing to finally have a professor with immense passion and a holitic understanding of the world. This dude knows everything from religion and ritual to sociology and history. A great class eventhough I got a 'B'
This guy is the first anthropologist to truly teach me how to take my ideas to the street. The service learning project I began in his class has evolved into a solid NGO working to supply the homeless with free goods of all sorts. I am now in Law School at Northwestern and thank Mr. Montgomery for showing me the ropes. Thanks bro!
I want to thank Dr. Montgomery for opening my mind to the world of social theory, urban anthropology and ethnography. I changed my major!
He is extremely smart, in a variety of areas. He kept the class, that I thought was going to be boring, really interesting. He has traveled and tells stories about different cultures and experiences which was neat to learn about. I'm glad I got him for Hon 1000. Highly recommend. Grades-not too hard, but will have to work. GREAT CLASS OVERALL
He is a very knowledgeable person and he knows his stuff he has traveled alot and often talks of it. Offers a different viewpoint from Herron. He does not give as many quizzes as the other teachers but he is fair grader if you work hard and try your hardest you will get an A recommend seeing him before turning in papers he will tell you what he wan
The most intelligent teacher I have ever had. It's very easy to get along with him, his sense of humor is perfect for college students and he doesn't mind swearing here & there. Plus, he makes Herron's confusing lectures understandable and interesting. He's a great speaker, very memorable. You have to work hard but he is a fair grader. TAKE HIM!
he is very opinated and liberal which makes his class highly interesting. tough grader. you will need to do the readings and work really hard on all the papers to get an A..many people get A-'s.. A's not that often. good luck
Cool dude but its almost impossible to get an A in the class.
Talks a mile a minute, but really knows his stuff. makes vague concepts understandable. doesn't mind if you disagree with herron or the honors college. fair grader. makes you learn.
Excellent professor. Class setting is very informal and relaxing. He encourages and debates differing viewpoints and respects everybody to the utmost degree. One of the most intelligent people I know, but he does not flaunt it like others may do. Down to earth type of guy. Do your best and he will meet you at the half-way point. Take him!
Great professor! Really smart and actively involved with just about everything. Makes lectures interesting and understands the "student point of view." Wants his students to come out with some new knowledge and a drive to do something to better the world. Not an easy grader, but the class is worth it.
The best teacher at Wayne State. He is extremely smart and he will teach you a ton. It is somewhat difficult to get an A but it is definitively possible. He will really change your thinking on school and life, for the better. If you have the opportunity to take him DO IT!!! He is a professor that you will remember forever!
Good teacher, very liberal, talks really fast, covers material well. If you go to class, you'll do decent on the exam. He's a fair grader, not too easy, not too tough. You don't use a textbook, but rather a bunch of books that you read and online readings. Nice guy, knows what he's talking about. I didn't care for the class, but thats just me.
This guy obviously knows what he is talking about. Very interesting stories and good lectures. The only problem is how fast he talks, light speed is an understatement. He really wants you to succeed in his class though, and if you put in the effort your grade will reflect it.
He is extremely liberal. Every lecture he gave, he would throw in his own opinion, and I absolutely could not stand it. With that said, he does know the course material very well, and is always happy to help you with it. He lectures at a very fast pace, and grades kind of tough. But if you are not liberal, he will make you sick.
I had Dr. Montgomery for HON1000&2000. He is a really down-to-earth, chill guy. Talks really fast, but you do get used to it. He loves what he does, & is really passionate about certain things, which shows in his teaching. His grading did harder in the 2nd semester. Often gives extra points on quizzes just because or if most people get it wrong.
He is a fabulous teacher who will help you succeed beyond your time as his student. He is very opinionated, but he still repects the views of others. Show that you are on the ball and willing to work, and he will love you.
This professor explains things with passion which makes the class more interested. His cultural anthropological knowledge helps teach the class even better. I will recommend to take him for this class
Talks so unbelievably fast! Really interesting guy and has a lot of knowledge about everything. He is hard, but it pushes you to work hard. Stay on top of readings (weekly quizzes given)and take notes on everything and anything. Ask questions and visit him during office hours; he'll see that you're working hard and you'll probably get a good grade.
He is a great teacher, I would highly recommend taking him when you have the chance. He is very serious and passionate about the subject matter and knows a ton of stuff. He is an all-around great, friendly, happy, awesome guy. He is willing to help you if you need it and is fair and understanding. He speaks quickly and talks a lot.
this guy talks really fast so don't even bother taking notes. He hardly gives out anything above an A- unless you put a lot time into this class and write flawless essays. I suggest taking another discussion teacher that isn't such a hard grader regardless of the fact that hes an interesting teacher
He is a very brilliant teacher and helpful. If you go to him for the essays, he gives you good suggestions. You have to work hard but an A is manageable.
Dr. Montgomery is amazing. He teaches with such enthusiasm and passion that it really resonates throughout us as students as well. He's very supportive of everything we do and I hope he continues to teach honors because this university and the city of Detroit need him more than he thinks! He's a fair graders and expects students to do their best.
The most inspiring teacher I have ever had so far. He makes you believe you can go out into the world and help people. He is an amazing role model, extremely involved in the community both locally and globally. Shares random knowledge, talks about current issues, relates to teens very well. He does talk a little fast, and gets a bit sidetracked.
He is a really cool guy and his lectures are interesting but he has his downsides. He is so smart and has ADHD that he talks super fast and goes off on tangents sometimes. Sometimes he grading is unfair because he feels students are too hung up on getting a good grade. He also cusses a lot and presents his views and beliefs as if they're facts.
Dr. Montgomery is possibly the most influential professor I will ever have in my college career. He lectures with an unbelievable amount of passion. His grading is HARD and he demands a lot. But he is a true asset to WSU and the city of Detroit needs people like him to bring it up. Take him to learn..not for a good grade.
This is a very tough class but Dr. Montgomery makes its very fun and interesting. He is probably one of the coolest and smartest teachers I have every had. He's a tough grader but he's very helpful.
Dr. Montgomery is extremely passionate about what he does and what he teaches. I learned a lot from him, and while his quizzes and grading are tough, I took home more knowledge that I could have ever asked for. He gave me faith in humanity again.
Very enthusiastic, a difficult grader at times and not always clear about exactly what he wants, but gives a few extra credit opportunities. He expects a lot but is passionate and interesting.
Just take him...you won't regret it
Dr. Montgomery is a very challenging professor. However if you apply yourself, he is willing to help you throughout he semester and is extremely interesting to listen to in lecture. I highly recommend that you take Dr. Montgomery if given the chance
Not really helpful, was never at office hours and email responses were brief without much help. Make sure you use the books in your papers and hit every point he mentions, because if you miss one he'll mark you down. He's not bad, but for a required class that many people don't care about, it kinda sucks.
He is a great professor. Anyone who complains is lazy. His lectures are so interesting and he is more than willing to help the student. There needs to be more people like him teaching this class. Students need to learn to think and he teaches you exactly that. Also, you learn how to write in the class..but he is not easy, but def worth it! awesome!
Very tough grader - he knows the subject matter rather well, though.
This man changed my life. He makes learning actually enjoyable. He is so passionate and incredible at relating to students. WSU should be honored to have him. He is not easy and must be precise in the essays, but take a class with him and he will "opens up your mind like a parachute". I am glad to have him in my undergad. A person u will remember.
By far the most demanding professor in the honors college, but is also so helpful and makes you not only a better student, but a better person. You will have to work extremely hard, but it is so worth it.
so refreshing to have a professor who is enthusiastic and passionate...so amazing! really makes you understand the meaning of Peace and Conflict...def take him! Guaranteed to remember him! He relates to students so well but he is so empathetic towards other! Amazing!
I will remember Dr. Montgomery for days to come. He was very enthusiastic and passionate. He talks super fast but you come out of class with a brand new perspective and a desire to do something better. Though he is a tough grader, it is totally worth it. Must take for WSU students! he is frickin' brilliant!
not the right professor to take for an online course
Dr. Montgomery is a great professor. He is hard though and makes you work for your grade and grades every blog post but the feedback is helpful and insightful. I would go into his office hours regularly to get the most of his knowledge. He is sooo passionate and more than willing to help the student. He knows how to relate imp issues to students
Dr. Montgomery is without a doubt, the greatest professor I've had at Wayne State. His passion for his work and the world is so inspirational and that makes all the difference. He's not an easy grader, but after having him for a few semesters, you learn to analyze your writing, read the required text, and most importantly love what you're doing.
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Montgomery's class. I had him my first semester at WSU, and he completely changed my perspective on what I wanted to do with my life. His passion for and knowledge of the subject matter was infectious. He was tough but fair. Be prepared for lots of reading, but the readings were almost always incredibly interesting.
Dr. Montgomery is amazing. He is able to relate course content to students and his fieldwork helps him to teach the course. He is passionate, spazztastic, and wonderful. His course is amazing and students learn how to be appreciative of life. Class sessions were amazing. His grading was not easy, not too hard. Had to work but well worth. Amazing!!!
Dr. Montgomery is the best college instructor I've had. Enough Said. I got a B- but learned about life. Take him.
I would not take him again, or suggest him for a class. He ranted through the whole semester about him, the world according to him. In hindsight I learned nothing. So if you want a nothing class, with confusing lectures and assignments go for it.. otherwise a detour
I really enjoyed having Dr. Montgomery as an instructor. He was a little scatter brained but he always found a way to bring it all together and hone all of the concepts. At the graduate level, he was a great teacher with high expectations but his enthusiasm and passion made it all worth it. I learned a lot about global issues.
the ideal college professor. He does not make the course a cakewalk but wants you to take notes and ask any question you have. Because of his course, I was able to learn from the people around me and see how conflict can transform into peace. This was a really inspiration class. Send all paper outlines and draft to him well in advance! he will help
Dr. Montgomery's passion about his work is quite inspiring. He cares about his students and the course. He wants the students to get as much as they can and utilize it in life. His online class requires some writing but he provides excellent feedback. I would recommend him.
After graduating from WSU and moving away from Detroit, I miss him and all the enthusiasm, experienced knowledge, and passion he shed upon. He was and continues to be so inspiring. I had him for Honors PCS and earned a great respect for Detroit and the world. You will remember him. Also, if you do well, great rec letter! got me into med school.
Talk about passion! This guys anthropology courses are contagious, as a doctor working in Africa, this professor is the reason why! Take him!!
Dr. Montgomery is an extremely passionate and informing professor. Very detailed and speaks from the heart. Gives very good feedback for your writing. Hes a very good lecturer and fun to listen to. The only problem was that he talked fast. Other than that, I would take him again and would strongly recommend him
Dr. M is really passionate about his work and students. He wants everyone to do their best. He is there to help students whenever they need it. He also grades harshly because he expects a lot out of everyone, so you'll have to earn your A. Only downside is he talks really fast & lectures don't always match up to reading. Overall, would recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS. From the reviews written before, I expected something similar. Completely different teacher. Wish I would have taken his actual class. Too much work with too little understanding. Multiple books are required for assignments that I had to purchase.
Not recommended for online courses. He is a very hard grader, and the class is out of 100 points so every point off is a percentage point lost of your final grade. He does give extra credit though. I always considered myself to be a good writer, but I can't seem to please him. I am a 4.0 student but I probably won't be anymore after this class.
For an 8-week course, this was the most annoying thing I had to endure. This professor is very lecture heavy and often gets sidetracked into promoting his own work. You have an article summary due every week, which wasn't bad at all. Also, you have the choice of take-home exams; another plus. Overall, the professor is very difficult to understand.
He has a standard that he expects us to meet and it is refreshing. He was fantastic and his passion made the class enjoyable. He has experience in the field and wants you to do better. His grading is not easy not hard. Follow the instructions and use his expertise to better yourself and papers. He will give rec letter too if you try! def recommend
His lectures are the best I've heard; based on his experiences and he is very enthusiastic. Don't think you are going to take notes, he talks extremely fast. If you really listen you can reflect on PowerPoints later. Dr. Montgomery really explained papers and sources we could use (JSTOR). I worked harder for higher grades, but it only improved me!
Dr. Montgomery's passion for the subject is immeasurable. Come out of your comfort zone and listen to gain knowledge and a new perspective. He provides you the opportunity to learn and succeed, it's up to you to take it.
Dr Montgomery is absolutely brilliant and def knows what he's talking about. I love his candor. He is very down to earth and really wants his students to succeed which helps immensely. He is by far one of my favorite professors at Wayne.
Dr. M is a gem of a teacher and person. He talks so fast but the passion and enthusiasm is inspiring. I learned a lot in the class and worked hard. But it was a great class. I got a B+ in the class but I never enjoyed a class more. Go to office hours! your grade will be way higher if you do because he will give you feedback!
I was indifferent about taking this class, as it was an elective. After the first session, though, I was hooked. His lectures are great. Ive never had a professor that was more passionate about what he was teaching. He was a tough grader, but very fair. He laid out what was expected and held to it. If he taught more sections, I would take them!
Mind opener
Learned how to write and do proper research
Dr. Montgomery is awesome he makes anything he is teaching so much easier to understand. He is also incredibly passionate about everything he is teaching. I would recommend any of his classes to any student.
Thanks
don't take him unless you're ready to read for hours and hours a week. otherwise, he's a nice guy.
Most dedicated teacher I have had that genuinely wants you to learn and advance.
Me gusta!
He is an amazing professor. This was his first course teaching at MSU and I got very lucky to experience him. He doesn't have any exams, just assignments, book report, and a paper. Honestly, if you put in the work and try your best, you will have an A. He gives everyone a fair grade they deserve and is always there to help you. You will enjoy him.
Discussions are important as you use points mentioned in class on HW and tests often. Go to class for this reason. Lots of reading but it gets broken down in class pretty well... if you go to class and participate youll get an A , if you miss 40% of classes or more youre getting a B- tops . Worth it though
This is one of the best professors you will ever have. Great understanding of the world and people, very knowledgeable, and doing great work for humanity. Talk to him and get to know him and you will most likely come to respect him as I have, and he will most likely respect you too, and talk with you provided he is not busy with his work. Great man
Eric was an awesome professor because he gave students amazing feedback and gave extra credit throughout the course. He makes you work for an A, but his grading criteria was clear. He also gives the perfect amount of work a student could handle if they are full time and I actually learned something in this class! Take this professor if you can.
He is one of the greatest professors I have ever taken! He is AMAZING!! There are 5 discussion board assignments, one book report, and one research paper. There is plenty of time to do each assignment, and he provides students with great feedback for everything. He's so nice and caring! if you can take his class, take it!!
Eric is a charismatic professor who shows a ton of passion for the studies. If you show that you care and show passion for your work he will grade you well. He loves to know your opinion on things and to expand on that in your writings. He will respect you if you respect the studies.
lots of reading. very hard grader! go to offie hours/ meet with him one on one and it will help your grade.
Dr. Montgomery is an easygoing, enthusiastic, amicable, and gifted professor who is very passionate, and knowledgeable about Peace and Conflict Studies. Also, he is available to talk to outside of class. In this class, you mainly just write papers, read, watch the documentaries, and do research on various topics related to conflicts to do well.
Dr. Eric Montgomery is absolutely awesome! You will learn a great deal in this class, and the text book will remain a good resource to me. This professor is something different, he really cares about his students and he provides feedback to ensure they are successful.
Dr. Montgomery is a very passionate professor, but a very tough grader. Cite the textbook and you'll do alright.
Taking a class with Dr. Montgomery should be something that everyone who can do it, should. He is tough on grading but he helped improve my writing and analysis immensely. You have to work with him to get that good grade but I am so glad I did. Dr. M is a true gem and would always be super kind and caring in his emails, sending us rays of happiness
Hes incredibly kind, but its as if he doesnt actually read your papers. He would give feedback on stuff that I shouldve included in my papers that had very clear paragraphs showing that they were in my paper. I think he just skimmed papers and slapped a grade on at the end.
Really great guy who tried to get to know everybody in the class as much as possible even during the beginning of the pandemic. Tough grader and there are a lot of short papers but I really enjoyed having him as a professor. One of my favorite professors during my entire college career.
