As long as you turn in all 9 writing assignments (credit/no credit so you don't have to put too much time into them), and put effort into the 2 big essays, and come to every class, you should make an A. I have never posted a negative rating, but he is the worst professor I have had so far at SMC. He is contradictory with the material and with the directions for assignments. He is often rude when approached about clarification. He doesn't have a strong grasp of the material. Needs to study teaching methods or stick to PoliSci, isn't a Philo prof.

I've been in honors classes since 3rd grade, and I have never had a more stressful experience learning anything in my entire life. Following his instructions on how to write your paper to the letter will still result in being marked wrong. Feels like he gave up on actually teaching students years ago and is now counting the days until retirement.

Eric is a very, very, very tough grader. I got a B because of 1 point and he does not offer extra credit at all. He painfully gives 0's like candies. I'm a student from Berkeley who took it for my pre-req thinking CCC would be easier... So my advice, if you are a student dying to transfer and do not want to wreck your GPA DO NOT take his course!

Dropped this class as fast as I possibly could. Long, lengthy emails several times a week. No mercy in grading. In fact, in his syllabus he mentions no one makes it through the class without at least a few 0's. Pretty sure he just pulls names out of a hat to give them to weekly. Responds to emails impossibly fast, which is a plus.

I had a horrible experience in this class. As a fast-paced winter course, there were assignments due every 2 days, for which he graded very harshly. He loves to give out zeros for your assignments, and gives very unclear feedback. He is not understanding & refuses to compliment your work. One of the most discouraging classroom experiences I've had.

One of the best professors I have had! Super interesting lectures and helpful assignments that worked towards three papers due throughout the semester. Paying attention to lecture material was pretty important, and I would look forward to taking another one of his classes.

Prof Oifer was great. I enjoyed how he structured the class and gave us a comprehensive understanding of philosophers. He showed plenty of real life applications for each. His point system made it easy to predict and work on our grades. Make sure to use the language of his lectures in your assignments! Would take again if he taught another class.

This is one of my first classes at SMC and I highly recommend avoiding Oifer at all costs. Even from his syllabus and the way he words emails, it is clear that he only wants to show to students that they aren't good enough no matter how much they try. Unclear repetitive feedback, not a real teacher, and got very aggressive during a email exchange.

Has a bizarre point system instead of a typical grading method, although it allows you to only complete 80% for an A. Make sure to write exactly what he is looking for, or he will penalize you significantly on each assignment. Not much discussion in class, listen to his lecture to find what he is looking for in the weekly assignments.

This class with Professor Oifer is no walk in the park, but engaging with the material can pay off. The workload is heavy, but unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook help make it manageable. Stay focused, and you'll come out a stronger critical thinker.

THE WORST class/professor I have ever had. DO NOT take this class unless you're a genius. The hardest grader ever. He is not understanding, he laughs if you ask like a dumb question or something. Literally do not take this class, had to withdrawal. Way too hard to finish. Just talks the entire class, does not teach at all. THE WORST.

I took him for both poli sci 51 (got an A) and poli sci 1 (not sure yet, but it's looking like a B). He's engaging and explains things very well. However, he is a VERY strict grader. Expect to follow his guidelines directly if you want a good grade. He doesn't take attendance, but if you miss an in-class assignment, you can't make it up.

I took him for poli sci 1 (scholars) and it was one of my hardest classes. He is a TOUGH grader so if you want a good grade make sure you do the assignment just like he wants it. Lectures were okay, sometimes he would just talk and not get to the point, but they were helpful when it came to writing the papers.

I took this Scholars. Although hes a tough grader, anyone taking this class should have the ability to think critically and work at a higher level, esp if taking to go into law. He helps you to do this! Very straight to the point, clear, and insightful. Do everything exactly as he asks! Grading is a point scale. 33 points are needed for an A.

I would recommend this class if you are someone who is genuinely interested in polisci/philosophy. However, if you just want an easy A, do not take this class. He could give you bad grades on assignments if he doesn't like a word in your sentence. On the other hand, his class was one of the most thought provoking classes I've ever taken.

He assigns two short papers due weekly. You have to analyze how a philosopher would address a current problem based on their philosophical thinking. Books are written in old English making it difficult to understand. He says it his policy to not help students out that you should be able to figure it out yourself.

I took this as a scholar's class along with his nonscholars PoliSci 51 class, the difference in difficulty was wild. I found this far easier, the lectures felt like they hit the points more consistently, and his grading seems much more fair, I would suggest everyone takes this class because it teaches you very important things about the government.

This is a pretty hard class, and unless you need the class I suggest you take something else. He does lectures, and gives 3 assignments a week, 3 total papers which are graded quite harshly, and unless you follow his rubric exactly how he outlines you will get a bad grade. I would only take this class again because it actually made me think.

I took this class a year ago and its lasting effect on the way that I think has been substantial, especially given today's politics. Rumored to be the “hardest humanities class at SMC”, it's harshly graded and Oifer can struggle to accept perspectives outside his own, but the readings and lectures expanded my knowledge of the world tenfold.

This guy literally hates you for asking questions and doesn't even let you finish talking. I've had to sit through this guy lecturing students for taking pictures of the board for like five minutes, he's so sassy in a way that isn't even funny or lovable just annoying. He rolls a dice to decide what grade to give you, he's impossible to talk to.
