fairly new instructor, class started out hard, but he trys to improve as the class went on. Okay lecturer, and grading is fair. Subject is hard, and class is a lot of work, but overall he is okay.
He is a fantastic teacher who is very willing to help and does cool demostrations. It might seem like he goes really fast but its not the instructore, its the course itself. Its very fast paced. He's very open to suggestions on how to improve the course. Keep up on the Reading& Homework! His tests are fine if you do.
very demanding.only way to get the grade u want is by working for it,he does not favor or give out grades. always available for extra help.does not trick u on exams directly from practice tests,u just have to do the work.better prof than others bc willing to accomodate u and improve. does a great job at trying to make it interesting
I had him for lab and he was great. No one is more helpful than him. He helped me when I didn't understand lecture material!! Watch out for those significant figures though or he will chew you up, lol.
BEST lab instructor ever! Material is difficult so don't expect to skate by without studying, but as long as you do your part, Dr. Person will do his. He is clear, organized, prompt, helpful, friendly, fair, intelligent, and he makes the subject matter fun! I'd recommend him to my friends for sure!
Dr. Person is awesome!! He's a little tough but that's just because of the topic he teaches. However, if you don't understand something, he has the patience of Job and explains things until you DO understand them. He's amazingly efficient, cares a lot about the students' education, and is incredibly hot.
It's a hard class only because the material is difficult. His tests are not multiple choice, but he seems to adjust the difficult level accordingly. Very helpful and easy to understand. Even on furlough days he supplies an online substitute lecture, which is rather impressive. Attendance is mandatory. I definitely recommend him!!
Exams are not consistent. Overall
I had Person for Chem1A and Frank for Chem1B. I would choose Person over Frank any day. It really depends on your learning style. Person is very direct and clear. He says exactly what he wants and the practice problems he goes over in class are similar layouts to the ones given on his tests. It's a hard subject but Person teaches it the best.
I loved taking 1A with Person! He was extremely organized and well prepared. His grading scale was good and fair. I was so disappointed when i couldnt take 1B with him. One downside was that he did iclicker quizzes at the beginning of each class so attendance was mandatory. But it was only weighted like 5% or 10% so it wasnt that big of a deal.
really goo teacher. he is easier than frank. i think the iclicker quizzes are a good thing because you stay on top of reading and all. is very clear and uses examples similar to his tests.
Extremely clear and helpful. Knows exactly what parts students tend to struggle with and spends plenty of time on those.
Very good professor. He does demonstrations almost daily and these are great because they really put everything into perspective. The tests are hard, but fair. Make sure you do the homework and keep up on the reading.
There weren't any tests for this course. The reading, however, was required. It was required to give a 5 minute summary and participate in class. Instead of tests, he gave us worksheets and there were two in class presentations on the material learned. We were also required to do a paper. The class was demanding but reasonable.
He is a Wizard. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. Everything he does in the class is helpful. Holds online review sessions before test that really help. Makes him self available.
Best Professor to teach at Fresno State in my opinion. It is very clear in what you have to do in order to get an A in the class. Just stay on track with his guidlines.
Makes it very clear what is required to get the grade you want in the course. Extremely helpful. Holds online review sessions, and even allowed students with high grades to be exempt from the final.
Dr. Person is one the the best chem teachers at Fresno State. He actually relates his lectures to his tests unlike some teachers (Dr. Frank). Read the book and pay attention in class and you should do great.
Course = hard. BIG Portion of grade on ACCURACY in lab. Dr. PErson is organized, concise & makes lecture pertain to ur major/life depending on what ur doing. always available to help during off. hrs. VERY particular about sig. figs. NIT-PICKY but tells u exactly what he wants. Read b4 class, use wat u read in class. Be preapared to WRK 4 ur grade!
Very good Prof. He tells you what you need to know for the test and provides practice test before hand. Lab is half the grade, but it is fun if you like chem. He helps, but will not do it for you. A lot of titrations. Hardest class I have taken, but worth the hard work. Learned a lot! Test are hard but straight forward.
You have to study a lot for this class. Chemistry is already a tough subject, but it's not too bad if you study. He lets you skip the final if you have a high enough grade in the class. Take advantage of his extra credit! It's possible to get an A, but it does take A LOT of work.
HORRIBLE "teacher". he doesn't teach the material, he assigns u the readings and quizzes u on the material the next day in class. he then zooms thru the lecture without really explaining how to do the calculations cause he expects you to already know it from the readings. take it with Dr Golden. this needs to leave
Very easy class if you have any prior knowledge about chemistry. Reading is assigned every lecture day, but it's short. He has iClicker quizzes based off of the reading at the beginning of class so attendance is important. He posts study guides and hold online study sessions. If you have a high grade, you can skip the final. Take him.
Person is an excellent chemistry professor. You can tell through his ways of teaching he clearly knows his stuff and wants all his students to understand the material. His experiments during lab were a great visual to understanding the concepts. Always read the book before lecture to get the most out of the class. Grades fair on tests. Take Person!
Dr. Person is definitely a great professor. He sincerely cares that you know the material and spend time to read the book and apply your knowledge to labs and the tests. Also, the tests are written tests, not multiple choice. The class can be easy if you read according to schedule. Otherwise, you'll fall behind.
Person is one the best professors. He has serious passion for Chemistry and that's what really makes him unique. His lectures are very useful. Also, go to the SI sessions because the resources are very close to the test. Just make sure you are willing to put in the 100% effort and study everyday, and you will be fine!
Most difficult class I have taken at state but it is a subject I am very interested in. All the students had to rely on each other to teach each other as he did very little. I ended with a B but don't take this unless you have some confidence in chemistry.
Overall, he is a very good teacher. You can tell he loves Chemistry. I just think he has too high of expectations and I don't think he can explain things in a simple way. He seems to smart to be teaching Chem 3A. Be prepared to put in many hours, no matter what it is a class that will take extra effort. His tests are always cumulative hard.
Clicker quizzes every class, so make sure you read before you come in. Homework every night. 3 tests and a final. He does an experiment almost every class. His test are free response, NO MULTIPLE CHOICE! It was his first time teaching 3A, so he referred a lot to 1A & 1B, and kind of talks a lot, but he is a good teacher. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!
Person was a great professor as you could see he really knows a lot about chemistry and really wants his students to understand. I have never worked so hard until I took this class with him. You actually have to work hard and study all the time! Tests are cumulative and written answers only! Homework everyday and you have to read before class.
Great professor!!! He wants his students to really learn and understand the basic of chemistry. He doesn't want you to just memorize things!!! There is 5min quiz every day (basic information about the chapter). Four exams and cumulative. I haven't got the book, I used to watch short videos on YouTube, and that works very well!!!
The first time I took chem 1A with a different teacher, I absolutely failed. I took this class over the summer and it was like night and day. Fantastic at explaining anything that is even slightly confusing. Had him as a lecture and lab teacher and he was very clear with both. Even if he isn't your current teacher, I recommend talking him.
Teaches the class as if you're already an expert on the subject. Spends a majority of the time quizzing you on what you should have read instead of actually teaching the material. He does a demo on most days, which was pretty cool. If there's another professor teaching the course, I'd go that route.
Dr. Person is a great professor. He explains the material you need to know very well but checks for understanding so you need to read and study to do well in his course.
Dr. Person pulls no punches. He is clear from day 1 what the expectations are and what you need to do to succeed. Caring and knowledgeable. He will answer all questions and direct you towards reading that will bolster your understanding. One of the best professors in the department.
Dr. Person is a caring professor. But he speeds through his lecture notes and doesn't explain how to do things because of being short on time and cramming so much in. You really have to study for his exams and go to SI Sessions. All exams are written response only, no multiple choice. Tough class and a lot of people struggle.
He goes through the material very fast and sometimes when reviewing, he doesn't even go over problems. The tests are all response, no multiple choice. You really have to attend SI and do as much as you can bcuz it's a hard class. I don't really like his teaching methods & I heard from other students that we were further than any other classes.
He goes really fast in lecture. Tests are open book open notes but they're also all open/written response so the tests are hard. Go to SI and you will improve your grade a lot. He grades the entire class on a curve. A 65 is a C and I ended the class with a 67% but I started going to SI and was improving my test scores so he bumped my grade to a B
We had to upload what we learned that day by pdf to blackboard every single class which was tedious. He literally teaches the class like you already know Chemistry. Yet, his lectures are interesting, and he does a demo each lecture. THE EXAMS ARE SO HARD lol NO MULTIPLE CHOICE. Don't take him if you're not good at science. It is haaaard
First of all if youre willing to put in the work for a class then you will get an A. Dr Person was a great instructor, for every test he gave us the answers after so that we got better understanding of our mistakes Also gave us chapter diagnostics study guides for every chapter, really helpful on tests. if you dont understand lecture watch youtube!
Person is a great professor. However you need to do your part, and set aside study hours in order to understand the concepts. He goes really fast while lecturing, so be prepare to take good notes. For hw we used Mastering Chemistry, and those can be time consuming but fairly easy. I recommend going to SI or work with a tutor. Good luck!
Person is a pretty relaxed professor. If you are confused on anything, he is willing to help. Every lecture is based on the reading, but the reading is an easy read and not long at all. Class is not mandatory, but you should attend to understand problems that would connect to the text and exams. Only 3 exams and online hw, really easy A if you read
Dr. Person can rush through lecture (all powerpoint), so read before class. Online hw after every lecture. 2 midterms, 1 final, but plenty of SI study sessions. Tests are all free response, but theres extra credit in every test. he cares about us, so dont be afraid to ask questions bc he'll answer every one of them. overall a great professor.
Dr. Person wasn't the worse but he wasn't the best either. His tests are strictly free response which makes it even more tough. He is a better professor within the lab portion of this course. Lab is fun!
Person is a great prof. The class is very hard but that is only because of the material. Lecture attendance is not mandatory but he covers a lot in one day so you'll have to teach yourself if you do miss. Lab attendance is mandatory. All tests for lecture are free response but he allows you a full 8.5x11" paper (front and back) for a cheat sheet.
Dr. Person is a great professor. The way he teaches is easy to understand and he is always patient and understanding with you if you have questions regarding a problem or concept. Don't be scared about his free write exams because they honestly give you a better chance at scoring higher than a multiple choice. Just pay attention and go to class.
Dr. Person is a great professor but, the class itself was quite difficult. Take him if you want to learn chemistry thoroughly but you'll have to put A LOT of effort (if you want an A). I got As for all of my exams because I studied my notes and the practice exams, did the mastering hw, and went to SI. Just a lot of memorization (like poly ions).
Dr. Person is an amazing professor. Chemistry can be tough but he tries his best to make sure that all of his students that need help get the help that they need. Lots of hw on Mastering Chemistry and quiz questions before every class but everything he assigns, he has already taught. He's more than willing to help if you need it.
Homework outside of class online, a quiz when you walk into class. You might not like free write exams, but it pushes you to understand the content. Allows retakes to give you an opportunity to master it. Retakes are allowed based on participation points (so make sure to participate it'll really help you).
Dr. Person is one of those rare professors, think a unicorn, who prefers you to learn the materials than just zombiely lecture in class and hope for the best. He helps those that he notices are struggling in class. In short, if you met him half way you will get a B, do a little more and youll get a solid A and find you actually like chemistry!
Dr. Person is very knowledgeable and accessible. He really gives students the benefit of the doubt in regards to tough subjects. Great guy with a weird but funny sense of humor. 10/10.
Well, where can I start? This class was challenging. He was very fast with the material he doesn't even give you a chance to write stuff down before he's on the next slide. I would not recommend it. All his test are free response which makes it even harder and stressful. Class is mandatory due to his quizzes at the beginning of class. Lots of HW.
This class was extremely hard! I would not recommend. Lectures weren't all that great and understanding the material was tough. He skips through lecture very fast and was hard to take notes. It is expected to read before class for reef polling. Tests are not multiple choice, all fill in. I didn't attend SI sessions but heard it was helpful. Took 3A
Professor Person was not a good instructor. The lecture was not as thorough or instructive as you would hope especially for a chemistry class. There are quizzes every day so attendance is mandatory. This class was very hard because with little of any help Professor was not very open to helping students. There is a lot of homework as well!
Chemistry is hard material, but Dr. Person does his best and essentially holds your hand throughout the course. His tests are free response but he uses basic questions for most of the test. Read the book before class like he says, this makes the material seem easier. You will be fine as long as you put in a little effort.
This professor was really great in lab and helped out a lot on the experiments. Theres a TON of work to do in both lab and lecture. It was important to read the assigned chapter because he quizzes us on it in class, and the lectures dont go as in depth as the text. The exams were really hard. Regret not going to SI but I had lab at that time.
If you want an A, you have to put in some effort. Quiz each time before lecture about chapter readings. ALOT of hwk. Hwk takes a while. Sometimes takes a few hours to finish. Provides study guide but not exact. Final was hard. Go to SI. Great lab instructor. Very willing to help!
Dr. Person is great professor, he is willing to talk to you if you need help. Chemistry itself is very challenging, for this class you just need to be on top of your things and not stay behind. Exams are open response, but he is strict on your sig figs.
His lectures are kinda helpful. He gives a lot of iclicker quizzes every class so make sure you go cuz that's your attendance points. His quizzes are difficult only if you don't know what you're doing so put in the effort to understand his notes and homework.
I actually took chem 3a, but there wasn't a choice for that. He is an amazing professor, but chemistry is so hard within itself so I also had to put in my own fair share of effort. That is why I got the grade I got. I went above and beyond for this class and if you're willing to do the same there is no reason you won't pass. 85% and up is an A.
Dr. Person is an excellent chemistry instructor. He is a great person who is understanding and funny, but grades kind of hard. The course itself isn't hard, it's just a very fast paced course. You move on into a different module every two weeks and have a quiz every other week. Do the homework to understand the lectures.
I struggled in this class, but you will do well if you put effort in. Make sure you are comfortable with quiz material because there is a lot of free response. Read your textbook, go to office hours, and SI sessions. Homework takes a while, and can be tricky sometimes. He ended up dropping our lowest quiz score at the end of semester! Good Luck!
This class is definitely one where you need to study from the beginning. He goes super fast in lectures so most of the time they weren't really helpful. I would definitely recommend going to SI and studying/reviewing each topic after class. Online HW is annoying and lowkey hard. You honestly really have to work for your grade. 85% and up is an A.
CHEM3A is do-able, definitely not as scary as people make it out to be. If you go to SI sessions you'll surely pass. Person's lectures are all over the place. Reading quiz before every lecture, module quizzes, and a final.
Took Dr. Person for lecture and lab which was very helpful. You must read in order to fully understand the concepts. Reading made everything so much easy but its a lot. SI sessions didn't do anything for me. READ. Lab was pretty fun. Overall recommend Person. He's strict but is very helpful when you ask for help. Don't fall behind
Science courses are hard but I liked Professor Person, he's so caring/willing to make time for his students in order for them to succeed. I had laptop troubles trying to connect with eBook, Prof. Person took the majority of his office hour helping me until it was resolved! He's very approachable. Work with a group and you'll make it.
Straightforward class. Exams are like the module practice quizzes.
Taking 2+ hours to prep for class (reading/taking notes on the chapter & looking at HW) is worth it. Going blind into his lectures might leave you overwhelmed/confused because he does complex examples to illustrate simple concepts. For online classes, all exams are open note and open internet. 8 exams total. Lots of zoom, google doc collaboration
I enjoyed taking Mr. Persons class because he made learning chem easy by relating it to actual everyday problems. His tests are pretty difficult but if you study for them they shouldn't be that difficult. There is a lot of homework but it isn't hard and really does prepare you for the tests. He also really adjusted well to teaching online!
Horrible horrible dont let these ratings foul you. His lectures dont help you at all, he does hard problems during lecture. He says I know you guys dont know this but Ill still show you guys. Book and homework will be your tools to pass the class. Dont get me started with lab absolutely rude lab professor.
Dont recommend him if you learn by example you basically have to teach your self. Doesnt help you, he is rude and will basically tell you to your face that youre stupid for not knowing the course material.
Dr. Person is an expert in his profession & his range of knowledge is impressive, he made lectures fun & interesting with his mini-experiments. However, there were at least 1 or 2 tests weekly, hw which took more than 2 hrs to complete, lots of planning experiments w/ groupmates etc. MAKE CONNECTIONS IN THE CLASS, youll thank me later.
Know most of the equations/formula that he teaches during his lecture time. Textbook is required, which means there's hw weekly due (MyLab). It is a must to read the chapters that are assigned because he gives pop quizzes in the beginning of class. Don't give out EC, only extra credit was at the beginning of the semester, the scavenger hunt EC.
Dr. Person is an amazing lecturer and connects all the lectures to real world situations so that students would have a better understanding. He never judges and is always acceptable of everyone's comments and questions. By far theeeeee best professor in my entire semester.
Professor Person is one of the best professors I've had at Fresno State. He always tries to make real world connections and does example equations/problems during lectures. Attend his office hours if you're stuck, he's very sincere and willing to help. Be sure to attend lectures and take notes on assigned readings and images in the text/lecture.
Professor Person was an amazing professor! I took his Chem 3A class this last semester, and it was really fun. There is a lot of reading, and self studying for this class. The homework takes a really long time to complete, but is really helpful for the quizzes.
Whether you haven't had chemistry since high school or this is your first time, Dr. Person is willing to help you succeed and is willing to schedule time to help you. In lecture, he talks about what could be on the exam (which means it's on the exam) and he offers a lot of resources if you need help. Also, go to SI, it really helps.
I had Professor Person for lab and the Chem 3A Lab he teacher is just group work all semester. He does help and give feedback during class but when he grades later it is tough. The lab quizzes are difficult but honestly depends on how well you and your group work.
Honestly a great professor! Chemistry may be hard, but Person cares about his students and wants you to succeed. The practice exams and review sessions help with knowing test material. He is very understanding and caring, so don't be afraid to ask for help! Keep up with homework though because it will catch up to you. Overall, I loved this class!
I learned everything on my own and the hw. Two 90 min hw lessons a week, exams are tough, and he tries to make sample exams, but they aren't like the actual exam at all. I averaged a D on all exams; he does allow you to have 1 cheat sheet per exam, if you wanna pass read each chapter and know what you're doing before each lecture. go to SI sessions
Dr. Person is an amazing professor! Reading the textbook before class is a must. The lectures are example-heavy and typically help to clear up any confusion. As long as you read the textbook, go to class, and do the homework, it shouldn't be hard to pass. If you ever need help with lecture or lab, Dr. Person is always more then willing to assist.
Dr. Person is a good professor, but doesn't just give out grades. You have to earn them. Make sure to do the readings, homework, and come to class daily. Also, I advise to seek help if needed. My first test score was rough, which motivated me to attend SI sessions. This class was a lot of trial and error, but it was worth it at the end.
The class was so hard. The exams were really hard and also the average for the exams in the class was SO BAD. The homework also takes a lot of time to do and his grading contract is not the best. If you have a good grade in the class before taking the final but then fail the final exam, then you fail the class with an F. Go to SI sessions.
Be prepared to learn/teach material on your own. I attended every class and attended SI, still struggled because exams are basically your whole grade. Two homework assignments each week but they are LONG. No extra credit and he says he really cares but clearly the class average was like 50.
Professor Person is amazing at what he does. His lectures are engaging and easy to comprehend. He truly cares and supports all his students. I would recommend him for any course. He is the best professor. While there's a moderate amount of homework I would suggest utilizing SI not that you will need it. He offers extra credit on almost every quiz.
Be prepared for Long homeworks, attending to classes is not mandatory, his explanations are awful, they have nothing to do with the homework and tests. I had to teach myself by watching youtube videos. In conclusion going to class is a waste of time. Tests and quizzes define your grade.
If you have to take a Chem 3A class at Fresno State, I honestly do recommend Dr. Person. Speaking from my own experiences, I did not find this class extremely hard but you have to put in the work. I first thought that we were gonna be tested on the stuff from mastering chemistry so I was so overwhelmed but it was just stuff from his lectures.
This class is tough. My biggest advice to pass this class is to take notes of the readings, go to SI sessions, and DO THE PRACTICE EXAM QUESTIONS they are similar to the test questions. You have 7 quizzes, you only get 15 min on each, and one final. Homework is 2 hours long but will take 5-6 hours to do. Be ready to work to get the grade you want.
First thing Person will tell you is that you won't pass his class searching for material outside of his lectures. However, his lectures are all over the place. He teaches every lecture as if you already know the material. His quizzes are nothing like the examples he provides. I did not take SI but if you're struggling, you should go.
I took Dr. Person's class during Spring 2024, and thought I was gonna fail because my average test score was so low (except final). I attended SI session, almost every single when I needed help and it was so worth it. I also did well in lab and always asked him questions when needed. He may appear intimidating but in reality he's really nice :).
Great professor. He is very helpful and will help you a lot if you don't understand. There are timed quizzes (20 mins) that are each 4-5 questions after every chapter that are all written quizzes, no multiple choice. You definitely have to go to lecture to understand the concepts but he does not take attendance.
Great professor. There are many quizzes about 15-20 min each with about 5 questions per quiz that are all response questions. Lecture feels mandatory if you want to see what questions will be on the quiz as his example problems are very similar.
Great professor. Grade is really defined by the quizzes you do. However, if you attend lectures then they are very easy. Most of his lectures were easy to understand and everything was well organized.
He's great professor but tends to overcomplicate things. Just do the readings and look up youtube videos. Basic high school chemistry. Quiz are extremely similar to practice quiz, so just studying those and you would be set!
The professor and the class are straightforward. Class will be a breeze if you understand and do the work. Do the practice quizzes and example exam questions for each lecture, and you will pass.
This class was tough in the beginning, but you will need to work for the grade you want. He allows a 4x6 cheat sheet for every quiz, which is every 2 weeks. He will drop the lowest quiz grade, and you can be exempt from the final if you pass with over an 80% on all the quizzes. Overall, I enjoyed this class.
If you do not understand chemistry, do not take this course. This professor believes he is superior to all, and only his format matters, so you can't teach yourself. He is accessible outside of class, but he looks down on you for not understanding. Personally wouldn't take this course, and there are better professors out there.
