Awesome class web-site, great lecturer;I recommend this class to all...
Pretty cool guy; lots of readings, fun, but challenging
very knowledgable. Moves pretty fast in lecture--but he is a cool guy.
His lectures are always full of interesting facts and ideas, but I sometimes had trouble relating them to their bigger context. He also gave very helpful advice on my papers
CLASS WAS BORING BECAUSE THIS ERA OF US HISTORY IS NOT REAL SEXY. BUT RAUCHWAY WAS INTELLIGENT AND FAIR TEACHER.
His lectures are intressting and engaging and when he makes makes outside refences they are always funny. He tends to focus on the economics aspect of history i found that a little dry. But Rauchway's looks totally make up for it.
great professor, but as far as looks go, I'm not sure. :) the earlier posting I guess could have a point
Hottest Professor on Campus. very smart, knows his stuff. Present the material very well.
Excellent and clear teaching, moves at moderate pace, easy to keep up as long you do reading and go to discussion, great prof
moved at a comfortable speed, focused on economics, and loves the supreme court, I found the class interesting. Tried to relate everything to a few cental themes throughout class, I thought it worked well. Great class
Excellent teacher!! Moves VERY quickly, but he's very clear and his lectures are very well organized. One of the best teachers I've ever had. Papers and tests are definitely challenging, but not impossible, lecturing style is fast but interesting.
Great professor. Lectures are interesting and he moves through them quickly but if you ask him to go back he'll give a little disturbed look and go back. Gives you a list of terms for tests but they're pretty long. Papers are based on outside readings.
Great & Interesting Class. He uses Simpsons analogies<-- enough said :)
He talks too fast during lectures, but I think it is very interesting during his lectures.
I'm in love with Dr. Rauchway. I love his course, his personality, his looks. I will seriously miss not seeing him 3 times a week when I graduate.
I don't know about the looks part, but this teacher was great! His lectures are so clear and he's really knowledgable about the subject matter. His class was easy too. I did the essays the night before (research and all) and got B's on them. Take this class if you want to learn without worrying abou
One of the greatest history lecturers of all time. I highly suggest taking his classes... or even more classes if you previously have. He has an excellent knowledge of history, even though it seems boring, he somehow makes it interesting. He also wrote a book! that's a lot of skills right there!
No, I am not awed by his intellect or his looks. He was not easy to understand, nor was he personable. My advice--do not take this guy!
He's a very good lecturer, keeps you interested. Doesn't post notes online but does post list of short answer questions before tests. Tests are straighforwad and pretty easy, essay format. Required readings outside of text a little boring but there's been a lot worse.
Professor Rauchway is one of the few professors I really feel I have learned something from. His essays took me a long time to write, but he understood. Just a fair warning- he can be super intimidating during office hours, but in general is remarkably knowledgeable about his field.
Rauchway was a wonderful professor. He talks fast during lectures, but he is very animated and always keeps you interested. I would reccommend him to anybody, I LOVED his class.
His lectures enlighten what is otherwise a boring period. He is intimidating in office hours, but ultimately tries to be helpful. I'd recommend him as a history professor.
Dr. Rauchway is a great professor; he is full of sarcasm and always shuts up the show-offs in the class. Plus, he is so freaking hot. If he weren't such an interesting teacher, I wouldn't have learned anything because I would have spent all of class fantasizing about him. Yum yum!
Rauchway is the best teacher i've had so far. He is way sarcastic, smart, and witty. Some of the jokes are definitely "history" jokes, and he goes by them so fast it is easy to miss, but he is definitely hilarious. The class isn't easy, and you take a severe amount of notes, but he gives good, solid lectures and you know exactly what he's talking about and where the lecure is going. Sit in the front and be prepared to take a ton of notes.
Speaks really fast but is willing to attempt to slow down for a little while. term are okay. we'll see after first mid term
Simply fantastic professor. His lectures are highly lively and easy to understand... he will really highlight and increase your love of the subject, especially if you get involved in class. I highly recommend him.
He is an amazing professor. Though he talks very quickly he has such passion for the subject which encourages you. My best professor so far and if i could i would take his class again. History has finally become fun and you learn so much. He also explains the midterm for you and the papers aren't that difficult to write.
Highly recommended, best prof I've had at Davis. Very interesting, well thought out lectures.
Good professor. Lectures are interesting enough to get me out of bed in the morning. Easiness seems to depend more on the TA than anything else, since they grade everything.
I recommend Rauchway as a lecturer, but I don't recommend the Am Political Theory class. Rauchway is a good lecturer. However, the whole class is formatted to read articles from political thinkers and discuss them in class...after article 12 or so, you start to want to gouge your eyes out. Go for a more engaging class.
Interesting lectures, but hard to take notes on. Grade depends on your TA, but paper assignments and tests are reasonable.
Extremely difficult professor. Very good lecturer, but the grading scale is simply not reasonable for an undergraduate course. What would get you B's in most upper division history classes at Davis will barely get you D's in this class. It was an interesting class, and the prof. seemed like a good guy, but the expectations simply aren't reasonable
Rauchway was a great lecturer. He was gone a few times and had someone else teach for him and the difference was amazing! He makes the class actually interesting when I thought it would be terribly boring. This was the one class I never wanted to nod off in, despite the readings being so difficult/dense. Grading was fair, you just have to study!
Great lecturer, no doubt. I got an A in his class with a good amount of effort. Short answer and essay tests are fair. I wish I had seen a more "human" side to Rauchway however. While it is clear he is a history buff and a good speaker, he wasn't very approachable. It's like you wanted to talk to him but you were too scared by him. Recoomended.
He talks really fast & sometimes it's hard to take notes. Discussions didn't help too much. Midterm & final were a bit challenging, due to the huge # of terms you need to study. But he knows his stuff & seems like he'd be pretty cool to talk to outside of class.
Professor Rauchway is a great teacher. He talks a bit fast (and he knows it), but as long as you listen and take down what's important, you'll be fine. I thought his midterm and final were simple (no studying needed really, if you know your history). I'd take him again, but he wasn't teaching this quarter.
He's totally full of himself, but he's brilliant. He's a snobby academic who thinks you should know everything about the class before you enroll in it. Tip: During office hours, come up with a question that's hard for anyone to explain. He'll respect you for it. He still says hi and remembers my name when our paths cross in the death star. Good luc
I ditto the post below. But he's not the repulsive kind of a snob. He just dresses to impress, uses a chalk-holder thing, to avoid getting dirty, and uses his lectures as practice for his oratory eloquence. I highly recommend coming to office hours. It will change your way of approaching him and what he says (and why), which is key to his class
Needs to get over himself. He is very smart and likes to listen to himself. Thought he did a poor job grading papers. One of my least favorite UCD history teachers.
he is a good lecturer... i walk into his class n listen to a bunch of story... but they ar not boring and u will never fall asleep in his class... he sometimes show you some funny video... n he is funny too sometimes... however... he speaks very fast... if you ar not a fast notetaker... dun take this class... the midterm n final ar not tat bad...
Very clear and enthusiastic. Assigns books to read in addition to the text book - you don't really have to read them to be able to write the papers.
Interesting lectures. Rauchway is very knowledgeable, and clearly cares about giving informative lectures. I came into the class not entirely stoked about history, but his lectures kept me interested. Some of the assigned books sucked, but you don't really have to read some of them. Overall a good professor who really knows his stuff.
Loud...very loud...his lectures are some what unclear in that he goes too fast and does not test on 80% of the material he covers. Easy to get a B little bit harder to get an A. I never read and I got a B+
Grade depends on your TA. Discussion is mandatory and is part of your grade :(. Lectures were very informative. Never read or studied and got a B, although I didn't feel like an A was in reach. May be the TA didn't like me.
Amazing, amazing lecturer. He speaks pretty fast and doesn't post lectures online so write fast during class! Final and midterm were pretty easy-just short essays and papers weren't bad. I also had an amazing TA though- if you get Marie you are lucky! Discussions were mandatory but enjoyable. I would most definitely take this class again.
One of the greatest teachers I've ever had. Amazing lectures, very interesting. Take this class.
Really good professor, very easy to understand and the midterm wasn't that hard. Just make sure you go to class and the midterm'll be perfectly fine. Haven't taken the final yet, but I don't expect it to be much more difficult that the final. He's really funny, too, good at making lectures interesting.
Great lectures, fast pace, not a class for those who want to slack off. There are two midterms and a final. For this quarter, the final was a paper, but with a very involved and ambiguous essay topic. Every midterm and the final paper require the use of ALL the books and the lectures. Lots of work, but good class.
I learned so much in his class. The only thing is that he goes really fast, so you can't stop taking notes during lecture.
Fast paced, college level classed. Can't slack off but not a stressor class if you're on top of your work. Would recommend to any fans of US History
Rauchway is amazing! I thought of history as boring until his class. He keeps class interesting, and can be very funny. He's an amazing lecturer, and very clear with his notes. The only problem was that his powerpoints couldn't keep up with all the information he gives.
great teacher! loved the class!
He was a really good professor, and knew what he was talking about, but hopefully you are a fast note taker. But the essays for the class were really boring.
I took this class 2 years ago when I was a freshman and I still can't get over how awesome he is. One of the best classes I've ever taken at Davis.
Great professor, I always wanted to come to class. Extremely easy to take notes off of his lectures, makes everything perfectly clear and easy to understand. One of the most knowledgable professors I've ever had, one of the best classes I've ever taken, absolutely no complaints. I would take his class every quarter if I could.
He is a great professor. Lectures are straight foward, tests are straightfoward. He gives you all of the terms to study for. Papers are fairly easy, depends on your TA. Discussions are interesting and helpful. Overall an excellent class. But make sure you can write fast, because he talks really quickly.
Prof. Rauchway is a brilliant historian and an engaging, eloquent lecturer. If you ever have questions he is more than happy to help you in office hours. Cannot recommend enough.
Covers a lot of material during lectures, so make sure you attend and can write fast. Take notes off his powerpoints. Two papers (start reading the books in advance, one midterm, one final. He tells you the format and provides the terms for both the final and midterm. Mandatory attendance at discussions, it's worth 10% of your grade.
He's a very good professor. Very clear and tells you the test format before the final and midterm. Not a very difficult class, but you have to do the reading to do well. There are 2 Essays, a midterm and final. GO TO DISCCUSSION! The TA's help you a lot during discussion to prepare for tests and answer questions plus participation is worth 10%
AWESOME prof! Really knows what he's talking about. Very interesting. Grade comprises of quizzes, midterm, and final(term paper). Not that difficult to get a good grade if you read (only 4 books). Term paper was kind of vague, but doable. Just put in a little time and effort and it's not too hard to get a high B or A.
Tough as nails, professor. His lectures are extremely detailed and his grading scale is hard. But in the end, I got so much out of this class and it really prepared me for graduate school.
This Professor is more prepared than most, his powerpoints were great I took him freshmen year and I am taking him again for 174A in the spring. He is great.
Mainly took this class cuz I enjoyed Taylor's 17A and the reviews for Rauchway's 17B were amazing. All I can say is, this teacher's reviews are way overrated. He cracks jokes every day but gets very weak laughs. His voice isn't very engaging, and I thought this class was boring overall. I was never interested in lecture cuz of his presentation.
One of, if not *the* best lecturer in the history department. He changed the course format this quarter - 1/3 midterm, 1/3 random reading quizzes (easy), 1/3 paper (a whopping 20 pages, but no final). If you have a cynical sense of humor, he's hilarious. And he has just published a novel based on Gatsby characters - need I say more?
AMAZING PROFESSOR! i thought the class was a bit challenging but the professor made the lectures interesting and worthwhile to go. he definitely knows his stuff. sections were helpful too. if i have the choice to take this class again, i would :)
I loved this class. Rauchway's lectures are so interesting you want to go. Great teacher. Your grade in the class totally depends on your ta. Mine graded hard so I got a B but I would still recommend this class because it's really interesting, and the teacher is hottt.
Among the best lecturers at UCD. You won't want to miss class it's so fascinating. The tests are on lecture/book and the essays aren't too bad. Your grade is at the mercy of your TA, so good luck. Raunchway also has an excellent sense of style.
Rauchway was definitely one of the best lecturers I've ever had at UCD. He made an interesting subject 10x's more interesting as far as I'm concerned. Midterm/Final were easy to manage, however TA's, at least mine, were awful. But Rauchway is clear and hilarious! Take 17B w/ him if you get the chance.
The Best lecturer I have had during my time in Davis. Rauchway is a straight up G. His class is pretty easy as long as you keep up with his ID's the papers are straight forward and if you do what is asked you will be fine. Rauchway successfully makes what could be a boring class into one of the most interesting classes I've ever had.
Go to class! Quizzes are easy if you attend lectures.
I felt this professor was really hard to follow. There are no podcasts, and lecture slides are usually just pictures and facts/quotes. His lectures did not flow very well, and made it difficult forme to understand what he was trying to convey in his lectures. I also had a horrible TA, who didnt do anything...wasn't enthusiastic or engaging at all..
This guy...is not personable but very knowledgable and has excellent rhetoric. HIS120 is a new class so the class itself wasn't very structured but it was alright. He talks very fast. Quizzes, one term paper, final. Film reels shown in class. A must take if you're a WWII fan, obviously since this is a class dedicated to that specific war.
Not exactly the most personable prof as mentioned. He comes off as pretentious ,though his knowledge is vast. No TAs for the class so limited help. Otherwise pop quizzes are easy with lec attendance. Term paper is vague. Would recommend if interested in topic.
He knows what he is talking about and he teaches very well.
really clear lecturer, interesting. however you never really interact with him. grading sucks cause basically final won't improve your grade at all (%20), 50% papers. impossible to recover from a bad grade on a paper (which aren't even discussed in class). better be a good writer... grade @ the mercy of TAs.
really clear lecturer, interesting. however you never really interact with him. grading sucks cause basically final won't improve your grade at all (%20), 50% papers. impossible to recover from a bad grade on a paper (which aren't even discussed in class). better be a good writer... grade at the mercy of TAs.
Best professor I have ever had, amazing orator and very funny. I attended every lecture because I did not want to miss out on his outstanding presentation of the Progressive era! I've had 4 classes with him and he has been incredible in each class!!! I can't wait to take His. 102M with him this Fall (2013)!!!
WW II Class was even more amazing than I anticipated. Very intimidating but very helpful and funny. He taught the class about WW II as if it were a story, which made it even more intriguing.
Highly analytic and knowledgeable about every subject. Despite the fact that each subject is a brief overview, his arguments are exemplary.
Not a personable man AT ALL. I went to his office hours once for help and he very rudely brushed me off and told me to ask elsewhere. He does not put his lectures online, though they are mainly pictures, and is not accommodating at all. He is extremely knowledgeable about history, but his teaching methods are questionable at best.
One of the best lecturers you will ever have at UCD! Very, very impressed with his lectures. He is a little intimidating to approach, but very very knowledgeable and informative when he lectures. You MUST go to class and take detailed notes, or you're gonna miss a lot. I was always looking forward to going to class, and the 50 min went by fast.
By far the best teacher I've had at UC Davis. And I'm a Sr., physical sciences major. Lectures are outstanding, nothing less than riveting. Really loved the course.
Lectures like a storybook. Very interesting. Take this class for a good laugh and a free A. Good GPA booster.
Seriously the BEST PROFESSOR EVERRRR. Defiantly take him. He is funny actually loves the topic he teaches. He really helps his students and doesn't make history sound boring. He's well educated on the subject as well and keeps the class entertaining. Super easy A. Just show up to class and know all the Acts he teaches. Will take him again.
Amazing professor! Makes lecture super enjoyable! Though there are days it can be boring, he always makes a witty comment that makes the entire class laugh. Two short papers and a midterm and a final, both exams is just like any other history class: IDs and essay. Super easy and enjoyable and super clear on what he teaching.
Best history lecturer in UCD, hands down.He is extremely passionate about U.S. history, and he made going to lectures enjoyable.Attendance was not mandatory, although it is a must if you want notes (he doesn't post ppt slides online). This is the 1st history class I've taken where study guides were not provided , making studying for tests difficult.
Good lecturer, very clear and funny sometimes. Took his class Fall 13 and this was the first quarter he didn't post a study guide OR ID's. You're pretty much left to guess what the ID's are yourself. Make a public study guide so you can help each other. Easy B, somewhat difficult A. Write the essays like your TA say. Not my best prof, but he's ok.
Mr. Rauchway is an extremely good teacher. His lectures are him constantly talking. However, the information is very interesting and he is so passionate. He really knows his stuff as well. Which makes him hot! I definitely say take him if you are even remotely interested in WWII. He's amazing!
This guy knows how to make history interesting. By far the most intriguing history class I've ever taken. And because it was so interesting, I probably learned the most as well. This is an easy class if you listen to his lectures (I never take notes). You can write a decent essay if you skim the books. I would highly recommend him.
Lots of memorization but, overall, it was a really interesting class. 2 essays which are compare and contrast based on 2 novels each. 1 midterm with IDs and an essay. Pretty basic history class. Gives a very basic overview of World War II but it's a great introduction to anyone who wants to do further reading.
He was honestly the best professor I have had at UC Davis. I'm a bio sci major and decided to take this as a GE since it sounded interesting, and I am so glad I did. His lectures flowed so well and were so interesting that I actually enjoyed going to class! Very smart and engaging, and the right amount of difficulty. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!
Professor Rauchway's WWII class has been by far my favorite class at UC Davis. Depending who you had as your reader, the paper's were graded fairly. Prompt was not too difficult, the catch was that you had to read two books per paper. The midterm/final were similar in that there were no study guides, but take good notes and you'll do fine.
Rauchway's WWII class inspired me to take more history classes here at UCD. He is an EXCELLENT lecturer. I completed his WWII class with an A (which was easy because it was so interesting). He's a bit of a hard ass when it comes to assignments, but he will accept GENUINE excuses. It's "easy" if you're willing to put in effort.10/10 would reccomend.
I really enjoyed the lectures. The books were really good which made the papers easy and fun to write. Essay tests are always a bit nerve racking but the criteria is clear. 4 books, two papers, two essay exams on the lectures.
Pretty solid and entertaining lecturer. However, lecture not quite necessary to get a good grade. Papers are 50% of the grade which are dependent on external readings. The exams can be prepared from simply Googling things rather than attending lecture. Grading can be quite subjective, so as long you have a reasonable TA, you're set in this class.
He is unorganized and offers random in-class quizzes throughout the quarter for 25% of your grade. There were probably 3-4 quizzes and if you miss a few of those and go to every other class (MWF schedule), it will still dent your grade. Avoid taking this teacher unless you plan on attending every class.
Teaching a joint course with Prof. Campbell on WWI, Prof. Rauchway primarily offered his wide array of knowledge of the U.S. and Western Front. I can't help but think he was a little out of his element teaching this course, as I sat in on WWII in the fall and it felt much more comfortable for him. Nonetheless, I enjoyed his lectures and the course.
No doubt, Rauchway is a solid lecturer and the class itself is interesting and relatively very fair. However he tries so hard to be "professional"/"cool" that the lecture is basically 50 minutes of preening; gets annoying. Try approaching him after class, he isn't personable at all, adding to the idea that it's all some self-aggrandizing facade.
Rauchway is a good lecturer when it came to the American side of WWII, though slightly above mediocre on the rest of it. His 'lecture' on the Battle of France, for instance, was riddled with errors. If you ask questions after class, he is acrid and unfriendly. Aside from his odious personality, the class is easy and straightforward enough.
Rauchway is a great lecturer and is very knowledgeable about the content. However, this class you cannot skip lectures! None are posted and they don't do recordings so get a good nights rest b/c if you sleep during lecture, you'll be lost for the midterm/final. I love his passion for the content but man, take notes and sleep well!
Rauchway's lectures are very erudite and he makes history so NOT boring. He makes jokes, but also manages to cover everything. Very knowledgeable and great guy. He doesn't post lecture notes and doesn't allow taking pictures of the slides, so make sure you listen and take notes, and you're set for the exams. Paper grades depend on your TA.
Professor Rauchway is an amazing lecturer and his lectures are always interesting. Once in a while, he would throw in a joke or two. The class consisted of 4 memoirs to read, 2 essays, pop quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The class itself was very interesting but also if you plan to take this class, you cannot miss a class if you want to pass.
Professor Rauchway is an amazing professor. Gives great lectures and incorporates some humor in them. He gets you interested in the material. He loves what he does and is great at it. He had us read four books for HIS17B so make sure you buy and read these books because you will have o write two papers. 4 things in gradebook: midterm, final, papers
The only graded assignments were six five question pop quizzes, two essays, and two blue book exams. The lectures are fast and sometimes hard to follow but he gives a list of terms at the end of the week so it's not too hard to catch up but it does take a lot of studying. Form a study group!!! I cannot stress that enough!!!
Rauchway is passionate about history, which shows in his enticing lectures and pristine powerpoints. However, he is pompous and incredibly unapproachable and will make you feel stupid for asking a question in class. There are two 1,000-word essays, 6 multiple choice pop quizzes based off of readings, and relatively easy midterm and final.
He is an excellent speaker and his lectures flow well. He is a bit fast-paced, so be prepared to take thorough notes. I wouldn't recommend going to his office hours as he is cold and generally unhelpful.
His lectures were good, but he rejected us to use our phone to take pictures of his ppt. You need to pay all attention to his presentation, then you will learn a lot. He usually prepares terms for us to review, so if you review all the terms he emails you, you will pass the exam with a good grade. Pretty easy to get a B, but hard to get A
The class was very interesting. 2 essays, pop quizzes, and a final. Do good on the essays since most of your grade is based on them. You have to read 4 books which could take some time, so start early. You learn a lot and lectures are not boring. Not an easy A class, so ne aware.
Super enthusiastic. Made the course interesting.
He's a great lecturer, however, he makes the course way too difficult for a GE. This class is mandatory for international students who might not have any background in history. He assigned 4 readings which were quite complex and entirely based on law. I DO NOT recommend this if you are taking this as a GE and are not interested in law.
Personally, history is my least favorite subject (I had to take this as a major requirement) but even I found myself enjoying Prof. Rauchway's lectures. He also allows students to use their notes during both midterms. Only downsides are he doesn't post his presentation slides on Canvas and he doesn't really welcome questions during lecture.
Professor Rauchway is a really great lecturer and he really knows how to capture your attention in class and make the course interesting. There are 2 essays, 1 midterm, and 1 final. The essays requiring reading from 4 books total, but the TAs are very generous graders. Tests were very easy, highly recommend this class for a GE!
Really good orator. Midterm and final were open note essays. Pay attention in class, and don't skip. TA's really helpful and knowledgeable. 2 essays weren't bad if you read the 4 books. Make sure to space out the books or else your essay will be crap cause you won't understand them. 20% each for 2 tests, 2 essays, discussion participation.
Professor Rauchway is an amazing lecturer. Very knowledgable and funny in class. 4 books, 2 essays, a midterm, and a final. You must attend lectures (he doesn't post notes online) but his lecturs are so interesting you'll want to go anyways. The only downside is that he is a jerk if you try and ask him stuff after class, but you probs wont need to.
His17b was a fairly easy class. The only graded assignments were 2 in class essays, and 2 take home essays that required you to read 2 books for each of them. Lectures were not really mandatory in my opinion, since the TA went over the terms that might pop up for the in class essays, but I am not sure if all the TA's do this. Overall, I'd recommend
I got this class for a GE and was surprised at how interested I became in this class by the way he taught. His lectures are heavy and doesn't put up lecture slides, so get ready to listen well and write. The exams were open notes but if you missed class or didn't have good notes, you probably did bad in them. Apart from exams, 2 papers, fairly easy
Google him to see what a respected historian he is. His classes are hard but you learn a ton and he's insanely knowledgeable.
Professor Rauchway is the last bastion of hope against the scourge of irredeemably terrible lecturers that infest UC Davis. The fact that no professor will come close to even a laughable mockery of Rauchway's incredible lecturing style is honestly too much to bear.
Hard to believe they pay 250k a year for 30 min Zoom lectures. I am sure he is better in person, but didn't seem particularly interested in engaging with his students. If you are a competent writer and read all the books you will get an A.
The most boring and monotone lecturer ever. He literally reads off his notes when giving lectures and you can barely even hear what he's saying. Even high school students can make better presentations than this guy.
Professor Rauchway is one of the best professor's I've ever had. I took HIS 120 as an elective and Rauchway was captivating in lectures, even on the online format. Definitely recommend taking him. Grad based on 2 essay's and a few short quizzes, gave prompt and constructive essay feedback. This course changed the way I view learning about history
Overall a good teacher. Kind of boning but informative. Weekly lectures which could be accessed at any time. He did give weekly quizzes. The papers were straight forwar although the reading wasn't really necessary if you use the find tool when writing papers. He was really kind in his responses and it made me sad when he said goodbye at the end :(
Professor Rauchway has some of the most interesting lectures out of any professor that I have taken. The majority of this course is graded based on 2 essays which are based on the notes from his lectures, so paying attention to them is important. The rest of the grade is based on weekly reading quizzes (entire books) and participation.
Professor Rauchway has been one of the few gleams of light in my schooling online at UC Davis. I have never seen someone put so much work into recording lectures. They feature multiple camera angles, green screens, videos, photos, and other primary sources. Additionally, very clearly lays out the way the course is graded, making it pretty easy.
Harsh grader. Terrible on essay grading.
I have taken 13 classes online now and Professor Rauchway's are by far the best. I have taken HIS120 (WWII) and HIS119 (WWI) and both of these classes are the highlight of Zoom University. He doesn't just sit in front of the camera like most professors, he walks around and has videos and pictures in the background. Wholeheartedly recommend.
One of the greatest professors in UC Davis. Gives enjoyable prompts for essays and was flexible on when we could view the asynchronous lectures (which were also fun). TA's were also very helpful. Overall solid professor and would take again 10/10 would recommend.
I loved professor Rauchway. He had to leave some information out due to how short lectures were, but the things he does discuss goes into lots of detail. Lectures about modern times was definitely politically biased, but I appreciate the fact that he backed his arguments with data even if he failed to go over counterarguments. I recommend the class
Dr. Rauchway is the real deal. Hilarious, intelligent, makes the most boring topics completely come to life. Plus he is SO funny!! It is such a treat to be able to learn from such a distinguished professor and historian. If you have the chance, definitely take him!! Its not every day you get access to such a knowledgeable and amazing professor.
I'm a STEM major and I often skipped PHY 9A and ECS 36B but never missed HIS 188 because lectures are just that good.
Took this class with Rauchway and Olmsted. No homework, just had readings and very easy/short quizzes on them. Midterms and final were essays but the professors' study guides were extremely helpful/directly reflective of whats asked on the essay and we were allowed notes. He made lectures interesting. Would recommend this class.
Professor Rauchway is an extremely knowledgeable professor w/ interesting lectures and a commanding presence. This class in particular had a lot of mixed media in its slides, keeping it engaging. Four books were assigned; they were easy reads. Midterm graded harshly. Would take Rauchway again because of his presenting skills and grasp of history.
I LOVED this class. The TA graded our papers pretty harshly, but I honestly didn't mind because the lectures were so great. Rauchway is very knowledgable, engaging, and funny asf. I loved every lecture. I didn't really like history before this class, but I get it now. Please take this class if you want your world to open up!
I'd say he's a good professor, but all the assignment's scores are graded by the TAs, it very depends on your luck honestly, if you got a rigorous TA, you will only get 60 or 65 of your assignments including the exams, even though you tried your best to do it and attended every discussion and lecture. So you need to approach with TA in a good way.
Simply a brilliant instructor and historian. Dr. Rauchway and Dr. Olmsted really know what they're talking about. Gave brilliant lectures that I always looked forward to attending. Their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject will really make you fall in love with history. Must take!
professor rauchway is a great guy - clearly loves history and is super knowledgeable about it too. his lectures are information-packed so be prepared to listen carefully and take notes. his study guides contain prompts that are near identical to the real exam questions. but he makes you read four books throughout the quarter so thats kinda rough
I loved this class, it was very engaging and professor Rauchway made any information you missed easily accessible through canvas. Beware of the TA's though, some can be harsh with grading and some are really relaxed.
He is an overall great professor. The midterm and final were open book but relied heavily on lectures and readings. But his lectures are enjoyable and full of interesting information.
Although his lectures are inciteful and intriguing, pop quizzes are extremely unpredictable and the content might be based on readings or lectures, which makes it hard to study for them. He also takes a long time to input grades. It is finals week and I still don't know my grade for my second paper that was due in May. Don't take if a busy person.
Took WW2 with him and Kelman this quarter. Rauchway is an amazing professor with amazing lectures and he knows his stuff, I'll give him that. However, he is snappy with students. Know he does not provide slides outside of class and there are pop quizzes on lectures/readings. Midterm and final were 30 trivia questions. Great overall though.
Even if you average an A on the papers & exams you physically have to be there for pop quizzes, otherwise you will get a C for the course.
He knows his stuff and his lectures were very interesting to me. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you never know when the next pop quiz is going to be and he won't let u make it up unless u were genuinely sick. You have to pay attention in lecture and read, otherwise you won't do well on any of the assignments. Great guy, low key hard class.
Professor Rauchway is easily my favorite history professor at UC Davis! His lectures are engaging, easy to follow, and informative. The format is standard with two papers, a midterm, and a final. He provided study guides for the midterm and final, making it easy to prepare. Always review previous lecture notes as he gives occasional pop quizzes.
Amazing teacher, amazing lectures. Don't miss any lectures! The course wasn't super easy but Rauchway definitely made it interesting- explains topics well and is hilarious. Only a couple papers and quite a few books to read. Watch out for random pop quizzes. Loved the class and the course, just gotta stay on top of everything.
He's a great professor, funny, lectures are engaging. Just be prepared to do a lot of reading in this class
I loved this class. It is co-taught with Ian Campbell who is also wonderful. Prof Rauchway is a phenomenal lecturer who made every class engaging. The exam was an in class essay that was easy as long as you go to class and do the reading. I definitely recommend this class if you're interested in History and WWI
Professor Rauchway was easily my favorite professor. Attendance is mandatory in order to be prepared for pop quizzes that count toward your grade but attending class is no problem since he makes it very enjoyable. The books we read to write the papers are pretty dense but as long as you put in effort, you will receive a decent grade on them.
The attedence of lecture and discussion is mandatory and there are pop quiz on lectures. Even I attend every discussion, my participation is low. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS.
2 papers on 4 assigned books. Doesn't provide lecture recordings or slides so reallyy make sure you take good notes. Participation is graded by discussion (talking once or twice every discussion was enough for me) and by pop quizzes that are not that hard if you have good notes and keep up w the lectures. not an easy GE, needs a lil bit of effort.
My favorite professor at UC Davis! His lectures are so engaging and informative, and you can tell how much he cares about students' learning. Currently, taking my third class of his! The books he assigned furthered my interest in the subject matter and his paper prompts encouraged critical thinking, while not being too difficult to answer.
I had professor Rauchway for the Fall quarter of 2022. Without a doubt, his lectures are hilarious and pretty interesting as he cracks a few jokes throughout the lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, BUT he does not post lecture videos. There are small pop quizzes that are random so make sure you understand and read the materials for the course.
Took HIS17B in the fall quarter of 2022. He is an amazing lecturer, one of the only lectures I looked forward to because it was actually engaging and provided a lot of information. Lectures are not posted online, so make sure to attend.
Dr. Rauchway is an excellent lecturer and orator. His explanations of historical trends are clear and helped to bring about a deeper understanding of the subject material for me. He talks quickly, which makes sense because there is a lot of material to cover in this course. He does not record lectures. Four short books.
Best professor I've had at Davis. His lectures are amazing, entertaining, and very informative. He's real nice and loves his job. There are two essays which are pretty straightforward and quizzes that if you pay attention to lectures are very easy. Finals are either essays or multiple choice, he's done either in the classes I took with him.
Honestly out of my 4 years here this professor has been the best one so far. I am not even a history major and took this as a GE. He's such a good professor I actually wanted to go to class for once. Just go to class you will do well. We need more professors like him here at this school!!! Honestly give this man a raise.
His lectures always feel like a story as he keeps you engaged. The readings were interesting and manageable. However, I felt the quiz and test questions to be difficult for this class as some were based on very meticulous details. As much as they say to take notes on the general picture, I advice you to write down as much as possible.
He is a good professor who gives interesting and informative lectures. He gives out easy quizzes and midterms and the essays are fairly graded.
Rauchway is a great guy to learn about the 1960s from. He knows everything about the 1960s, and gives riveting tales of the events that took place during that decade. I highly recommend the class as it makes you appreciate the 60s history.
Eric Rauchway is one of the best professors I have ever had. I took 3 of his classes (HIS 119, HIS 120, HIS 188) and cannot recommend him enough. I'm being completely serious when I say that HIS 188 was the highlight of my week. He is so funny and engaging and the course was incredibly interesting.
Professor Rauchway is hilarious and his lectures actually keep me awake! There are in-class quizzes about once a week plus most of the exams are done offline so if you're more of an online person, this class can get a bit difficult. Also, if you're taking this class for fun (like I unfortunately am), just be aware that this class isn't an easy A.
The class itself is fine, lectures arent too advanced and covers a very basic knowledge of WW2. Should'nt be anything scary for someone who grew up in America. I enjoy the class, the Professor however, is another story. He shows zero signs of "fairness" and is beyond full of himself. Any minor inconvenience, is a big deal to his "time".
class is fair! - quizzes are very easy if you consistently attend the lectures, the midterms weren't beyond difficult (the 2nd one was graded very fair). the readings aren't so much of a pain as long u make sure to skim it and get the gist of it. if he teaches it with kelman - if u have questions talk w him, not rauchway (can be a bit of a prick)
Rauchway is a very knowledgeable professor and it shows--however, he's also really intimidating as a result. Outside of that, I really enjoy the lectures and the class (Rauchway and Kelman, what a pair) and the pop quizzes actually do help you prepare for the midterm #1 and final. Do not skip the readings.
Rauchway is the best history professor out there, an awesome guy who will make even the most boring aspects of history an absolute joy to listen to. Very fun lecturer, the one thing and I understand why he does it this way, but the structuring of how the papers work; they don't allow for research outside of the assigned reading.
Make sure you go to class, he doesn't post his lectures on canvas, and surprise quizzes 20% of your grade, overall amazing professor, he cares about his students . 20% quizzes, lowest dropped, final, final paper,2 midterms ( 20% each) based on reading ( 4 books) and lectures. easy class, just go to lecture.
Rauchway is outstanding in the fields of teaching and historical history. He can both give highly interesting lectures about different topics and even do voices of the different historical charecters to make the history come to life. In fact, his courses are so good that after taking his class on the American 60s, I had to take his HIS 174 too!
Rauchway is a knowledgeable prof, but can be intimidating. Lectures are engaging, and the quizzes/exams are manageable if you attend class and do the readings. unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the free textbook.
he is a decent professor and i appreciated his humor during lectures. however, i can't say he is a GOOD professor because i believe a good professor should at least provide the materials for success in his class. not only are there no slides or materials provided, there was no study guide for the COMPREHENSIVE final exam like really...
Professor Rauchway is clearly knowledgeable and has a deep understanding of the subject matter to the course. However, his teaching style can feel unapproachable for students seeking clarification. While he is very intellectual, students may feel discouraged from participating in class discussions due to a perception that he sets.
Passionate guy with good lectures but there is zero study material and no feasible way of really catching up if you miss a lecture. Exams are also formatted inconsistently so you're kept on your toes
Straightforward about how the class is structured. Prof and TAs were tough grader with papers. 3 main exams, 1 multichoice, 1 multichoice/short essay, and one essay which will serve as a rough draft for term paper. There were also pop quizzes so stay on top of your readings and study for exams! Don't miss a day or you will be behind.
I've no complaints about Rauchway, but the class is hard if you haven't much previous knowledge, which I didn't as a first-year STEM major who history doesn't come easy to. It's a lot of information all at once; if I had to do it over, I wouldn't take this upper div course in my first quarter. Despite this, he was fair and lectures were enjoyable.
From my perspective, Professor Rauchway was a strict and tough-dealing professor doesn't let us to take photographs for the lecture or quiz slides, which makes me difficult to study the notes to prepare for any Midterms coming up. Furthermore, be aware of the unannounced, or pop, quizzes during the lectures~
Great professor, clearly knows the subject. Gives clear instructions. A bit of a tenured, arrogant prick though. Doesn't want to interact with students.
He's a great lecturer. This class is unforgiving in the way it is structured. You cannot miss a single lecture, quizzes are frequent and can really mess up your grade if you miss more than one. Tests are hard and there is a lot of reading. If you have the time to put effort in, he's great. If you'll have a busy quarter, save this class for later.
If you can, take a class with him!
Amazing professor, he was so passionate about what he was teaching which made all the difference. There are pop quizzes that aren't too hard, just show up to lecture and you'll be fine. Midterms and final were very easy, multiple choice.
Eric is a professor among professors. Everyone craves Eric's approval—if he knows who you are, you have won (at life). The man shows zero emotion besides disgust (for bad papers and stupid questions) and an enjoyment of all things FDR, just as a historian would. His courses cover World Wars I and II, US (1917-1945, 1960s) and US Foreign Policy.
Took the His88 course co-taught by Rauchway and Olmsted.. Perfect class. They trade off lectures so you don't get bored, the topics are interesting and relevant. 5 question quizzes about twice a week, but they don't tell you when it'll happen so be careful about skipping classes, though I did and never missed a quiz. 2 midterms+final, inclass essay
He is great at giving lectures, however, his grading of the midterms and final were absolutely terrible. I wrote great essays and I was still getting Cs on both midterms. Not sure what he is looking for in his essays because I had mastered the material and articulates it beautifully. I wouldn't take him because he clearly just grades arbitrarily.
Such a joke. Thought he would be easy but he manaegd to turn this GE class into one where it was my worst grade. I did ok with an A- but he still graded so poorly. Im really upset by the way he grades. Chronic disappointment all quarter.
Truly one of the best classes I've taken at UC Davis! Passionate and powerful lectures! Class expectations and coursework are straightforward! 11 random in-class quizzes, 2 in-class midterm essays, and 1 in-class final that is also an essay. Honestly, show up to class simply because the lectures are amazing! The 1960s were a wild time!
Writing this from the perspective of someone who is not a history major nor interesting in history. Tried to take this as my gen ed, massive mistake on my part. With that said, I actually did learn something from this course and the material was actually pretty relevant and important to what's going on in the world today.
