Nice guy, likes to have class discussions/questions. study for test, little hard
Writes the most ambiguous test questions I've ever seen
Class of 75, but he got to know most of us. Loves class discussion. Hard tests
Class is a little dry but you will learn a lot.
very easy class, Rise has a monotonous tone but still happends to be funny!

Tough grader,but you'll learn a lot.Great professor&very helpful. RECOMMEND
Very fair teacher, I learned a lot, good elective to take
Great professor, personable, and fair. Highly recommend his classes.
Brilliant lecturer. Learned alot of important info. Study HARD
very easy and fair. Dry but funny. Take his class if possible
Excellent professor. Really knows the material and explains it well.
Very straightforward and clear lectures. Tests are a bit tricky.
Good teacher, lecture is same as book, tests are extremely EASY
he is such a nice guy the test can be tough though
nice guy w/ great personality. awesome professor, but ambig. questions on exam
really nice guy & good prof. class might put you to sleep but go & read book
funny,you will learn a lot,but hard.great for law school advice!HIGHLY RECOMMEND

nice guy, good prof, reading not necessary, tests can be tough
Not sure about him. Was condescending. Tests full of traps, lectures unclear.
Great Guy who knows his stuff. Really fair grader and class is interesting
if you want to go to law school take this class great insight easy study show up
very nice guy, interesting class, asks for alot of participation
No complaints...class was simple, his lectures werent too stimulating but he did supplement them with some pretty interesting videos
really like this class. he is very clear and covers everything that you will need to know for the test. study things on the study guide and you will be fine.
If you have half a brain and can manage to go to classes, you can ace any CJ course at UD. They are all catered to idiots, which makes them easy A's for group C requirements for science majors.
Did you ever see on Saturday Night Live when they make fun of the host of "Biography"? That is EXACTLY what he is like.
interesting class, good professor, likes to pick on people, but he means well
Great professor. Alot of fun, very sarcastic, tries to make class clear, and will actually listen to what the students have to say.
Amazing prof! He's so down to earth and a nice guy, has his funny moments too! If you take it honors its a lot of reading!!!! Exams are half mc and half essay. Good prof to take the class with
I also had him for my independent study (CRJU466). Couldn't have asked for a better instructor. Always enthusiastic and helpful. All around a great guy. 202 was great with him, always on topic and prepared you for exams.
easiest teacher.
Funny as hell. It is wierd - it's challenging, but you still don't have to do any work at all. Rise is the man. He just doesn't seem to care, but he does.
This guy is a ****.
He is really easy if you just attend his class. His DETAILED lectures make it so you dont have to read the text if you dont want to, and he will review things a couple times to make sure the concept is clear to all. Very hard to fail his class. A+ 4 TAs

Fun and interesting, yet challenging and thoughtful lectures. Very fair class. Do the reading and attend lectures and you will do GREAT on the exams. Rise is hilarious.
If you go to class, you've got an easy A. Lectures are a little monotonous after a while (its basically rehashing everything you learned in Intro to CJ) but you really don't need to read the text, and the exams are pretty simplistic.
Hilarious guy, low key but super intelligent. Very prepared for class, loves questions in class. His exams are fair and not too hard. I would take him again in a heartbeat. A+++ I learned a lot!
Easy Class, quiet looking guy but pretty intelligent. Makes class so much fun. We spend half the time joking around. Exams are fair. You have to do some work, come to class, study a bit.
Class was very good and he taught me a lot. He is so helpful! Take this course and definitely take him as a professor.
Rise is one of the best professors that I've had here at UD. The class seems to fly by, while, at the same time, you actually learn something useful. Definitely take any of his classes; you would be a fool not to.
have to do a little readin and type few small papers but over all easy class and interesting topics and lect, rise is cool, funny, and makes things easy to understand, def recommend
He's about as dry as burnt toast, but given the course material, you can't fault him. Overall, he's a great prof.
Awesome teacher!
I loved this class. All on 1st Amendment issue and arguements and really easy to debate. Material was applicable in so many of my courses. There is a a term paper but easy to do because he really prepares you with lots of arguement practice. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND! (There is a reason he is head of the department.)
pompous
a very unstructured class where the "graduate" TA did mostly all grading. both rise and the TA graded everyone VERY hardly it is an impossible class to get over a B in, I got a C and is the lowest grade on my transcript in 3.5 years at delaware. teacher is not helpful either..... awful experience... a nightmare
dry & unstructured - impossible tests
i did jack**** for this class. i only dd the readings necessary for the essays, and always came to class but never took notes and barely paid attention just dicked around with my best friend the whole time. i got an A. you can too - just come to class and listen with one ear and then study the review sheet. cake.
final was an impossible mult choice test!
Awesome teacher-if you like to participate, this is the class for you! Do the readings and study and you'll get a good grade!
final was impossible - absolutely horror show of a class!
Professor Rise is a brilliant man. The class is the hardest of the three required 200 levels but still this class is pretty straight forward. Going to class and doing the readings results in an A. I also took him for CRJU 301, which is easier but Rise makes every class enjoyable and fun.
Dr. Rise is probaly one of the best professors I had this semester. He makes the class very entertaining with his sharp-witted comments. we had 2 page papers to write almost weekly, but we could chose from 5 out of 8; so if you didn't want to write one you could miss it with no penalty. readings were short and interesting. overall I recommended.
This class is absolutely worth taking. Even though there are 75 students in the room he makes it feel very personable and he is willing to chat with his students. Class discussion is important in order to understand the material but the work load in very manageable.
There's ~75 people in the class, but class discussions were a lot of fun and Rise let everyone participate as much as possible. Five 2-page assignments (chosen from 9 topics). Midterm had a lot of stuff for a 50 minute class period, but final was not bad at all IF you study. A class worth taking.
Disorganized doesn't even begin to describe it. If you're a person who likes due dates, profs being on time for class, or profs who are competent, this guy is not for you. This class drove me insane. We never knew when things were due, never got assignments handed back, and the class itself wasn't even that interesting. Wouldn't take him again~~
Rise is a solid prof. Yeah, he can get a little stale at times but he keeps the class interesting and fun for the most part. Great class discussions make the 75 student class feel smaller. He goes fairly slow so that you're able to understand all the material. Exams are not bad at all, you get a study guide for them. Study and you're fine.
Utterly worthless as a respectful person and a professor. Made an appointment to see him and he forgot. always comes in late for class. Rude when asking for assistance. Waste of my life.
Rise is legendary. He shows up to class late and when he lectures he only writes 2-3 terms up on the board, if any. He is probably the most laid back person you can have as a professor, and people who say he is not helpful are simply stupid because there are only 3 grades - 3 tests. He actually did offer some extra credit as well.
He is an interesting guy, but his lectures are kinda boring and repeative. but he is a nice guy and means well. you have to write 5 papers for the class but they are all no more than 2 pages double spaced, easy. the tests are hard but if you study, then they are managable. test are mult-choice with one essay.
Rise is a straightforward guy. Do what he assigns, listen to his lectures, and read or at least skim the material and you'll do fine. This class allowed for debate and Rise loves to play devils advocate. Definitely recommend him. He's a fair grader and a great teacher.
Rise was a pretty good teacher. He did show up late a few times, but only by a few minutes. He doesn't use powerpoints but he lectured in a cleare and concise manner and made smooth transitions from one topic to another. Was pretty laid back and really knew his stuff. I would def take him again.
Very straightforward and clear on what he expects. Very laid back, encourages discussion and keeps the class interesting. Didn't mind the discussions going back and forth as long as they stayed civil and on topic, VERY enjoyable class. He is also very approachable and helpful if you grab him after class. I would recommend him and CJ435 to all major
awesome teacher. requires short papers throughout semester but they were really interesting. readings are interesting too. really funny guy. don't need to attend class but should because exams are very lecture based. recommend this class!
Go to class or you'll be lost. Some days you take no notes, others yo go on for pages. Doesn't really tell you why you got things wrong on your 2 exams and essay. Not too bad of a class, you do need the book and must read it to do well in discussions. B to B+ if you put a fair amount of effort in, A is going to be tough.
Easily the most boring professor at UD.
Interesting class and teacher, attendance is not mandatory but is important. All lectures, with two tests and one large project.
Overall, this class was pretty interesting and very easy. Textbook use is limited and when used is mostly case studies. If you go to class and take notes it is an easy A.
Great class interaction, fair and quick grading, and clearly defined requirements.
You have one case book that you have to read a few pages for each class. Not difficult, i really thought the class was enjoyable. the study guide is the test so if you fill it out and memorize it there is no reason you shouldnt get an A. once 5 page paper at end of semester. participation is 10%
Really easy class but his lectures are boring and there often aren't slide shows so you have to pay attention. Get the textbook it really helps with the study guide. He uses UD capture and there is never any homework. He isn't a hard grader but its hard to pay attention in class.
One of the most influential professors I've had at UD. I look forward to his class everyday and have learned so much from him. Anyone interested in law school should take Professor Rise, he does a great justice to the legal studies department at UD. Tests and assignments are straight forward and he gives extra credit! Recommend taking him!
Professor Rise is really nice. Go to class and take notes on the lectures and discussions, then skim the readings the night before the exam and you can get an A. He likes people who speak in class
Dr. Rise is a gem at UD. American Constitutional History Honors was an enjoyable and straight forward class. Read some cases, go to class, participate, write a case note, participate, and complete a take-home final. He allows ample time for debate and discussion and loves to play devils advocate. Take him if you can. An A shouldn't be impossible.
Professor Rise is okay. His classes aren't extremely hard as long as you take notes on what he says, but it can be difficult to determine the difference between him ranting about something or what is needed to know for the exam. He's unorganized, and won't get things back to you timely but he's smart and willing to work with you.
Professor Rise is a really nice guy. His classes can be boring because it is just him lecturing but he does expand off of his powerpoint and really describe it until you understand. Grades are based only on four exams and he gives out study guides that are super helpful. Class is on UD Capture and slides are helpful but listen to his explanations!
Prof. Rise did a good idea of making this class as good as possible. He made a note to tell us whenever we did not need to know something on his powerpoints, and when something was particularly important. He also provides study guides for his exams (extremely useful) and posts on capture. Between those and the textbook glossary, this class was easy
I had him for honors colloquium, but that's not listed here. He is one of the best teachers I had at UD, tho most of the teachers here are trash tbh. He is easy going and has funny interesting discussions. We were graded on 3 assignments, he took a month or two grading the first one. Overall hes a good guy, would take him again.
This class is you go to class, sit down, he speaks with no powerpoint, and you write. He will talk about the readings assigned, and you have to do forums for 6/12 (easy if you pick ones that are simple). Exams were all MC and he allowed a 8x10 cheat sheet both sides of info in. Easy if you go to class and take good notes.
Pretty boring class that is not difficult if you attend, take notes, and do the readings. The class had a m/c midterm and final, which he allowed an 8x10 cheat sheet of double sided notes. Also have to post forums (only 6/12 assigned through semester) which are based off the readings. Overall, this class was mediocre-just go to class and take notes
I only had him for a one-credit course but I still appreciated his sense of humor and ability to treat students as adults. Nice man, and clear grader.
Eric Rise is a wonderful professor. He's really kind and always available for help during his office hours. If you go to class, read the assigned readings, and put time and effort in the forums, you will do well. He does not put all the grades up until right before the final, however, so make sure you do well on the midterm. Overall, a great class!
Rise is a great prof - I took this as one of my CJ requirements and was so glad I did. He's a very down-to-earth, kind, smart guy who clearly enjoys what he teaches. The class material can be a bit dull at times, but he tries to make it as interesting as possible. Not a whole bunch of grades but it's totally doable - would recommend.
boring class, not interesting, and tests don't really reflect what the class goes over in my opinion
I loved my course with Professor Rise. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and wants him to succeed. Unfortunately I am taking his class during the COVID-19 pandemic and as such I cannot attend his class in person for the rest of the semester, but he is definitely trying his best to make us all comfortable with these changes.
I loved Prof. Rise, definitely take him at some point. Super funny older guy who cares about his students. His class won't disappoint!
WORST professor Ive taken! Never responds back to the email! And doesnt update the grades. Its a waste of money to take this class. I assure you there are better professors than him!
only had 2 grades in the grade book. said he was going to post extra credit, never did. class is so boring, i literally learned nothing. save your money and time and take someone else
Do not take this class, you will learn nothing. The first 3 weeks before midterm we did nothing, then all of sudden says we have a midterm next week. Makes exam open note, but very tricky and not straightforward.
He keeps the same slide up and just talks the rest of the time which makes taking notes very difficult. His tests are tricky and it is more than likely he will put you to sleep. Sometimes the class is interesting and you can tell he is passionate about his job however his teaching style is horrendous.
Professor Rise is one of my least favorite professors at this school. He himself comes to class unprepared, he rarely puts up power points and when he does they make almost zero sense, and he mostly just talks the entire class. You are expected to read heavily and he gives no directions for assignments, but grades very harshly and very late.
Very nice man, just soo monotone. It's very hard to sit through a lecture without dosing off or getting distracted. He is a tough grader, especially on open-ended exam questions or papers. Exam questions vary from straightforward to specific so definitely study. Bonus- He let us use a cheat sheet.
funny guy but extremely unprepared. lectures are boring and rarely puts up slides. Could have been an interesting class but he's so monotone I get tired. would take this class again with a different professor.
Professor Rise is a nice guy, but there was not one class where he showed up on time. He was anywhere from 5-15 minutes late every day and the class was only 55 minutes. We fell behind. You have to type everything he says in lectures because he barely uses slides The exams are hard even with a cheat sheet available to you. I would not recommend.
Professor Rise is a really laid back guy. Almost too laid back tho. His class is really easy but hes pretty unorganized. Its the week before finals and not a single assignment is graded yet. Overall tho chill guy and chill class but if you like having work graded quickly/ want a professor whose really on top of it hes prob not for you
Doesnt grade anything until end of semester so I have no idea what I have in class. Saved all of the assignments until finals week, and we still have a final to study for. Took a midterm months ago, now its finals week and I still dont know my grade. Hes funny, but we never do anything in class and then are tested on extensive material. Boring clas
always showed up to 5-15 minutes late even for a 55 minute class. never answered emails, even when I had a family emergency. had to repeatedly ask for him to post slides he said he would and he never did, even though multiple people asked. I have the final for this class in two days and he has not posted grades from september.
This professor is by far the worst I ever had in my life and I'm not exaggerating. He doesn't post any grades whatsoever until the semester ends. In addition, he not once showed up to class on time, always being 10-15 minutes late for a 55 minute lecture. Has no respect for students' time and money they pay for these classes. Would never recommend.
Never showed up to class on time or prepared. His power points are not informational he puts grades in so last
most ridiculous tests i've ever taken in that the questions are not from maybe a one second comment in class. study guides are way too vague. he's condescending and boring. he shows up late to class at least 50% of the time. DO NOT RECOMMEND
I thought Professor Rise was great! Definitely a little boring and late 80% of the time, but if you followed along he offered good examples and explained the content clearly. Exams were curved and reflected what we covered in class. These bad reviews are dramatic, I would recommend
Late to a good portion of classes, and lectures tend to drag. The exams are all multiple choice& true/false, also a lot of quiz questions that you would have already seen. A little unorganized and a slow grader, but this class is easily passable.
Professor Rise is a laid-back guy, but his class can be a bit disorganized. Stay on top of reading and use tools like Unstuck study to prep - it saved me time. Overall, a chill class, but grading can be slow.
Really nice and knows what he is talking about! only 3 exams and some quizzes but if you attend class, you'll do good on exams.
Professor Rise is definitely an interesting guy. Shows up late sometimes and has a pretty goofy personality. Overall pretty nice, but a little disorganized and doesn't respond to any emails. Some of the class material is also a bit hard to understand so make sure you show up and study.
Had him for another class and excelled honestly, took him for legal studies and this has been the worst class I have ever taken at this university. Not once has he showed up on time nor come prepared. I feel as if the lectures are arbitrary and lead to nothing related in the exams. Midterm was on a thursday, forgot to upload study guide day before
Shows up extremely late each class. Doesn't post grade. Doesn't answer email, and barely answers questions when students are confused. The lectures barely even relate to exams and tested on outside material that was never mentioned. Allowed one sheet of notes for exam but it doesn't even help at all. Grades very harshly.
He's a pretty chill dude, funny at times. If you show up to class, you get extra credit. He records lectures, so if you don't want to come in, you can watch those later and take notes. You'll be fine as long as you take notes on his lectures (in-person or recorded). The lectures are also interesting; I genuinely learned a lot.
I really like him, he's a little dull but otherwise great. Definitely don't recommend skipping his lectures, because his slides include minimal information about a topic, and he discusses them aloud. He gives an extra credit opportunity pretty much every class, it's just a one question "quiz" on poll everywhere. 3 tests, no cumulative final.
Was late to class about 90% of the time, anywhere from 5-20 minutes late. Didn't give us our midterm and class grades until the week before finals. Changed his own grading methods at various points throughout the semester. Did not explain concepts well and relied on you teaching yourself using the assigned reading.
Not helpful and isn't the brightest. He doesn't explain things well so you're on your own to teach yourself many terms and concepts. I do not recommend.
