friendly, knowledgeable, lots of visual demonstrations, thought-provoking
Astronomy IS everyone's destiny. We are born of and will return to star stuff.
Very helpful for visual learners. Jokes are helpful addition.
keeps students after class ends, tests too hard.
Very funny, a little boring, explains very well, expects alot on his tests.
a little weird, but he's a good teacher. just read and you'll get a good grade
His classes are boring, and his tests are hard
based on lecttures, hard tests
this class sucks. don't take it. find someone else. he's wierd too.
not very talkative when it comes to office hours
Very helpful, very nice, very patient, pleasure to work for.
uses the biggest curve ever!! lots of visual examples.. easy teacher!
Patient, fun guy, funny. Easy lectures that are easy to understand. Lots of visual aids.
Exellent teacher, very clear and uses examples to show you when explaining things. one of the best astronomy teachers.
Great teacher. Great examples. Flexible. Clearly loves what he's doing. Has a sense of humor.
Super Hard TESTS! Daily quizzes and weekly homework! Don't take this class...find another prof!
not a bad class. pretty easy. curves tests, get to use a notecard on tests. pretty good teacher.
daily quizzes suck. his lectures are long and boring. lots of notes and visual aides. notecard on midterm but not quizzes. try to get another teacher if possible
he's very clear and his concepts are not hard to grasp. best astronomy teacher at sdsu.
good professor, lectures are pretty clear and straight forward along with midterms
hard tests but he knows what he's talking about. dont take this class if you want an easy one
Awesome guy. Lectures are totally fun. He makes learning easy! Easy tests...just make sure to come for the daily quizzes and do the readings. Best astronomy teacher at State!
very clear and you know exactly what to expect on the tests-- realy helps you LEARN the material, not just memorize it!
For someone stupid in science this class is hard, but for someone not stupid he is amazing. fantastic teacher, knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. he is sooo goofy, i LOVED it.
Not bad class; daily quizes so you have to go to class. Tests are kinda hard cuz it is all thought questions and no memorization but you can bring a notecard. He can be really goofy but also really boring
hes a very cool guy and very chill. he doesnt really know what hes talking about though. when asked questions, he doesnt answer them but avoids them. the tests are kinda hard cuz his understanding/clarity is off.
Goofy teacher, but interesting class; very helpful; class is fun because he actually makes you think about the concepts; obviously loves astronomy and helping students learn
He was a fun teacher, not afraid to act like a fool to get our attention and understand a concept. I thought I did horribly in that class but I got an A-. He grades on the curve so don't help your friends study!
His humorous teaching style and focus on the overall concept rather than the details makes the learning process easy and enjoyable!
Very good teaching style for such a difficult subject. Tests are pretty clear and not that tough. You can only mess up if you get lazy. He has corny jokes, and he might come across arrogant like he's doogie howeser or something. I reccomend him.
He is one of the best teachers I have had @SDSU. He is passionate and really knows his stuff which helps the students get into learning the material. Coming to class is a must but he trys to make it interesting how can you not when he is so into it
He is passionate about what he teaches which makes it easier for you to learn. He's kind of dorky, but his methods of teaching are really good. He is one of the better teachers I had at SDSU. Take him. You'll be glad.
Really great teacher. Loves what he's doing. Makes expectations clear on homework and exams. Has little dorky experiments every class which are very entertaining. Informative and fun! Take this class!
Cool as **** teacher. Only reason I gave him a 4 on easiness is because I got a B, but it really is not hard at all, just need to go to class every day for quizes and don't get lazy on the reading. One of the best classes taken at SDSU so far because it's easy to keep interest if you are into it.
Great teacher. Fairly easy class overall. He actually seems like he cares about his students and he takes the time to make sure that what he is saying makes sense. However his daily reading quizes started pissing me off after a while.
Awesome professor. Knows how to make a student look forward to a lecture. Plus he's a They Might Be Giants fan.
His lectures can be kind of boring, but he's a great guy, kind of a dork and he lets his class know it. He's a cool and funny guy, but he grades kinda rough. I got a B-, but I also rarely went and didn't study a whole lot. Daily reading quizzes, two midterms, final.
This class was similar to the 101 class except it had a little more math. He assigns weekly homework which is really easy and is always willing to answer questions. His lectures can be a little dry but he means well and all his lectures are online.
he was a great teacher. he did a great job explaining things and really wanted his students to understand the material. if you go to lectures and read the book you will be just fine. i love the nerd rock that he put on about the sun! hilarious
I will miss his class. Very intertaining. Reading quizzes are just 2 little questions. Do the reading (it's not very much). 2 tests and final. Very passionate guy. He reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite sometimes.
He is passionate about the subject and does great in-class experiments however his grading is rough and there are daily quizzes (2 ?) however they are worth a midterm grade at the end. He isnt the greatest with explanations yet truely wants the class to understand. He IS NOT the easiest teacher for 101 by far. Only take his class if you like astr.
He knows what he is talking about, but doesn't know how to explain it to the class. Makes you do these workbook assignments, but won't give you any answers or help you with them. Gives daily quizzes that end up counting for 20% of your grade. only take him if you have no trouble going to class or being your own teacher. I do not recommend.
This is class is so hard. He knows what his talking about but doesn't know how to explain to the class clearly enough. His daily quizzes are easy but start to get on your nerves after the first few weeks of class. Don't blow those off though worth 20% of grade. I wouldn't take his class, one of the most boring classes. His test are impossible.
This class is so amazing! He is probably one of the best teachers i've had at SDSU. I was not interested at all in astronomy and he made it so interesing. Not to mention the fact that he is hilarious. He's so passionate about the subject. The class is easy if you go to class, and study for the tests. He gives you all the info you need to get an A
this class was terrible...He never tells you the answers straight out, he just makes you guess them. Even if you go to his office hours he'll just beat around the bat about a question. His meathod of teaching is not effective in the least.
hes an easy teacher, i got an A in the class, all you have to do is take some notes, and read like 2 pages a day, really easy class. midterms are straight from the notes.
Sandquist is great. If you're a visual learner and not too into math this is a GREAT class to take as a GE. He makes you think but it's better than just memorizing text. You need to show up because there's daily quizzes. Not a bad class.
If u go to class, pay attention, and study you'll do fine. I know that's impossible for some people cuz they're that lazy, but if you're not willing to put in the effort, then don't expect the class to get easier. Daily reading quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final. Everything's curved & u can bring a 3X5 card to each test. Solid effort=B.
Great lectures... easy class. I did the minimum and got a B. But I went to every class and did the easy reading quizzes. The only criticism I have is that he seems disinterested in his students. I went to talk to him after class about something and he just shooed me away... but it still was an easy class...
HE PUTS EFFORT IN MAKING LEARNING FUN WITH DEMONSTRATIONS AND WHATNOT, BUT HIS NOTES SUCK! THE LECTURE-TUTORIAL BOOK IS THE WORST SINCE SANDQUIST NEVER REALLY GIVES STUDENTS ANSWERS. THAT IS REALLY NOT AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN WHEN THEY'RE NOT LEARNING ANYTHING!
he is not helpful at all, hes very condescending. I thought astro would be easy, but he makes it more difficult and although the curves are great, its only because the students do so bad!!!! Do not take if you want an easy 'A'!!!!! Beware of other comments- they're lying!

took it spring05. His voice just made the class so boring. Half the people were sleeping. easy reading quizzes every class. does curve though. exams were challenging/detailed. i would take someone else instead. Oh and his "tutorial book" is a waste of time. dont buy it cuz he doesnt even give you the answers, so u dont know if there right or wrong.
If you love listening to John Kerry 3 times a week, then sandquist is your man...this guy is boring. Has no sense of time as he always lets us out like 5 minutes late, and we cant leave early cuz theres reading quizzes before class ends. Boring class. make this a pass/fail class if you canso you dont hurt ur GPA. Did i say this class is boring?
Horrible teacher. He is so boring. His reading quizes are ridiculous... its like either you get them all right or all wrong. He does not even teach in accordance with the book and his tests HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT HE TALKED ABOUT IN CLASS!!!! Beware!! take credit no credit and good luck staying awake.
go to class as often as possible since he issues a mini quiz at the beginning (or end) of EVERY class. they only count for 2 pts a piece, but don't take them lightly - they add up in the end. his tests cover his lectures, not so much the book. i went to almost every single class, did NOT buy his LECTURE TUTORIAL book and was able to pass with a B+.
This teacher is one of the best I have had at this school. Yes, attendance is MANDATORY but he makes things fun by cracking stupid jokes and giving a lot of examples to help people understand. Tutorial book isnt very helpful but he does use it occasionally. If you have common sense, you will pass this class with at least a B+.
nice guy, likes to make jokes during class. staying awake can be a challenge, but at times class can be really interesting. exams are not too hard at all, but make sure you do well on the reading quizzes because they count the same. hardest part of the course was making sure to be there everyday so as to not blow off the daily quizzes.
he is a good teacher funny helpful take his class you wont regret it if you put an effort towards it.
so nerdy that he's cool. very interested in the subject matter, but he understands that you might not be, and makes it easy for you to do well even if you're not into astronomy. Looking at them side by side, he is indistinguishable from bill nye the science guy. he's cool though... he let me take the final even though i forgot to show up.
Weekly homeworks. The homeworks are very tedious. The wording on the homeworks and quizes are not clear at all. Quizes run long. Lectures are beyond dry. Don't expect to thrilled in class. Unfortunately, he is the only one who teaches 201 :( Easy class though.
The final is worth 25%...didn't take it seriously and ended up with a B- after having a B all semester. Material is not hard. The most difficult part about the class is the homeworks. DON'T BLOW THEM OFF, because the points add up. Overall one of my favorite classes at State. He's very passionate and wants you to do well.
Online homework is easy if you pay attention. You need to know your stuff for the quizzes. The class was interesting to me b/c I actually wanted to learn more about the universe. Otherwise, you'll probably fall asleep or go on Myspace on your computer the whole time.
He loves what he does and it shows. He's very knowledgable and dedicated. Honestly it's a hard class but you can end up with a B if you pay close attention, read the book, take notes, and do the HW!! That's important. He cracks me up with his nerdy ways but I always enjoyed his class. Made a sort of boring subject cool. Take him!
The class is inspiring! It is VERY interesting and the professor is the BEST! He axplains everything extremely well and is passionate about the subject. The BEST class I have taken at SDSU so far. If the subject doesn't interest you than it might be boring for you, but you'll be surprised of how many people find it interesting once they take it!
Hint on the online assignments. Go through the tutorial and once you hit the questions at the end if you get one wrong, hit the back button. It takes you to the beginning of the question section and you can try again and get the right answers!!! I didn't figure that out till too late.
I loved Prof Sandquist! He made class extremely interesting! He did a lot of demonstrations in class that really helped me learn the concepts. He's very enthusiastic about astronomy and it definately shows! Highly recommend his class!
Hard concept but hes really good at explaining. ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS can mess up ure grade if you do not do them. Only gives out extra credit in the beginning of the semester so take advantage overall. READ the chapters in the book!! Two midterms and 1 final goodluck!
This teacher will have you buy a clicker, costing $40 for a one-semester code. In addition, the online questions he uses cost $40 too, so make very sure you buy a NEW book, not a used one. This will be so much cheaper for you in the long run. The book is expensive too, around $80. Extremely expensive course
Great Professor. Keeps class interesting with his demonstrations. Very flexible if you talk to him. Though class is not mandatory participation is earned via using the clicker. You do have weekly online assignments due Sunday nights
Really knew a lot about his subject and wanted his students to as well. Went above and beyond to explain concepts clearly and creatively. Have to read and do homework, and coming to class is helpful because he awards participation points.
I really liked his class. He obviously has fun teaching and it makes his lectures enjoyable.
Class was kind of boring. I didn't go to class so i didn't get the clicker points and got a B still. im selling the book. it was so expensive. email me and ill get it to you cheaper. [email protected]
Very gender and age biased. He will not help you discuss a concept if you are of a particular age/gender - smirking often. Observed him often helping others of his liking and not helping others. Extremely biased. His thought questions are graded & do not always pertain to concepts delivered or in book. However he gives his favorites point breaks.
Great class, great professor! He is very clear and very odd and funny. You have to go because there are clicker questions. He makes class interesting with his jokes and "experiments". You dont use the book too much, but you need the online course code for the online assignments (which are really easy). 2 midterms and 1 final. Relatively easy.
Sandquist is a total dork, in an adorable way though. Hes clearly passionate about the subject. His sense of humor keeps your attention. Must attend due to clicker questions. Test arent too hard, just do study guide. definitely go to the Mt. Laguna trip. best part of the class hands down. DO NOT buy text book. Just online one
Awesome professor, makes class interesting and material easy to learn. Pretty strict on the grading, don't over over think the tests and homework. Look forward to having him in the future.
This was such an interesting class. Some of the concepts do take a little bit of work to understand but overall it is not a difficult course. Barely used the book - but it does help with the hw. Definitely go on the field trip to see the stars!! Its amazing
Attendance is not mandatory but there are thought questions that is 10-15% of grade so always attend. Also, his demonstrations are hilarious. There are online readings before classes start. There are 3 tests which are because it's conceptual rather than factual. But, he gives extra credit though especially if you go to Mt. Laguna.
Really awesome professor! He's extremely understanding and more than willing to work with you to pass the class
Sandquist is a pretty solid professor... He's not very personable, but his lectures are fun. His experiments help you visualize concepts. I got As on all of the tests because he curves. Just study the thought questions and you'll be fine. While attendance isn't mandatory, there's like 7 clicker points for each class. Daily homework is 2 questions.
Really entertaining classes. Attendance is necessary because does daily thought questions with clickers. He curves his exams too
actually a hard class. clicker points count more than participation, hard concept, 2 homework assignments (able to look up, reading clarifies lectures), 2 midterms (he curves but thats cause they're hard), 1 finals, 2 options for EC, 1 hard weekly quiz. thought questions make me want to rip my hair out. however, I'm a poli sic major, not used to th
If you are really interested in learning more about space and how stars work, then this class is right for you, but if you want a simple GE to get over with DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Although interesting, the tests are complex and are thought based so you can't exactly just memorize the study guide and be good. Clicker points count as participation.
If you're looking for an easy GE class DO NOT take him!! Class is so unnecessarily difficult. Test averages were usually low D's, he curves but it is still not worth it. Take ANYONE else. Homework is very tedious and difficult as well.
Astronomy is much more than just stars and constellations, don't expect it to be easy. Exams are hard, but he is a fair grader and curves. Do the thought questions and stay engaged. Super knowledgeable in this field. This class is worth it.
Sandquist is a really great guy. ASTRO 101 can be tough with the test, but he curves. He is also really nice and willing to answer any and all questions. Definitely go to class!!!
Prof. Sandquist has a hard class with hard topics, but that is the nature of the field. He isn't always the most flexible when it comes to needing help, and help offered during office hours isn't as clear as it could be. He means well, even if the lectures are a little hard to understand at times.
Really awesome professor. If you care about learning about astronomy (which I didn't think I would until I took this class), take this professor. He's a really good lecturer and also throws in some cute and funny moments. Definitely passionate and cares about what he teaches.
