Very good teacher. He's interesting and very fair with grades... You should take a class with him if possible.

Excellent choice of teacher to teach Phil 5(Evil). Very boring lectures. Just remember Mencius and Hsun Tzu and u'll get at least 75% on test. didn't buy class material, still got a B average without goingt o class for about 8 straight weeks!
He's quite interesting and a good teacher. He explains very well and I like how objective he is. He has his own opinions, but doesn't let them get in the way of seeing a good argument for what it is. I really liked his class.

I think he is biased in his grading. He is not open minded and arrogant. He thinks that he knows everything and won't listen to others' opinions.
horrible
ok. This CLASS was evil. Lectures were boring because he basically read off his notes. Towards the end of the quarter, material REALLY got boring. His final is a bit detailed for my likin. i dont know how the hell im going to finish it within three hours. God help me...
Okay, the class itself is pretty interesting. Some of the readings are boring, especially towards the end, but most are good. His final is a b**** 'cause its 60% of the grade, and it's very detailed. Basically a lot of quotes, identifying people/things, and short answers. Cool class, one to learn in
VERY HARD, final is 60%, each quiz is worth 10%. LOTS of reading, but interesting class. In order to get a A, you MUST read. No papers, only tests.
Pretty difficult class. You have to do the reading, it's a must. 4 quizzes each worth 10%, and the final is 60% and cumulative. there is a pretty generous curve, but it doesn't help that much. I ended up w/an A-, but it took work. Interesting material though.
It is pretty easy as long as you read the material. There is no way you can just "wing-it" in his class by going to lectures. His final exam has a huge section just on identifying quotes from movies and the readings.
If anything, you have to go to lectures. But i didnt and just studied butt off three days straight memorizing the course reader, and ended up with an A. WOULDNT say its easy, wouldnt say its hard..just depends on your ability to memorize movies and books . I guess I got really lucky.
Bears an uncanny resemblance to Al Franken.
I loved this class and did pretty well in it without too much work.
sit outside the area before lectures, students are constantly talking about the topics. he makes it very interesting and is very helpful. posts notes on ilearn that he thinks he may not have clarified before. tests are hard. wonderful man
always a big curve because his test is soooo hard. you have to actually watch the movie and tried to read his material. To understand the class you have to go to lecture because there is no textbooks. he is nice but very strict.
This class is ridiculous. You would think that the tests would be at least decent since the material is pretty interesting, but its not! His tests are pretty difficult. essay grades for the midterms are terrible! u can't BS your way in this class. I went to all the lectures, seen practically all the films, and its still hard! tests u on quotes too!
he is such a boring teacher. i dropped this class. i swear, if you can sit in the classroom and not sleep, i'll call you God. i don't usually sleep in class, but i sleep in his class almost every single one. tests are super difficult and test on things that seem like irrelevent to the class! if you want my advice, don't take this class, although th
It's a very interesting material but lectures are boring as hell! I procrastinated on readings, don't do it! Still his curves are generous and I got a B+ in the class and never really applied myself too much. If ou do the readings and understand them then you will get an A as long as you can remember which reading the question comes from
If you speak up in class you will get a better grade. If you sleep you lack focus. If you fail you weren't trying.
He is a pretty vague teacher who uses circular reasoning in attempts to prove his points. Clas
I love this guy and his hat. Tests are hard, papers not so. Ancient Chinese Philosophy was difficult with tests, but the papers were fairly easy. Currently in Senior Phil Seminar and it's a lot of fun. He's approachable and nice, and I like to take his courses.
interesting teacher, good class to take for an easy A, high B. Test: mostly short answer questions with some "identify the author"
Very nice and good teacher. He is very thorough, make sure you go to lecture! Tests aren'too bad but make sure you READ. Class is very interesting
PROS: very interesting lectures, he is very sincere about what he teaches. CONS: uploaded slides are useless without the lecture. reading is quite demanding. tests are moderately difficult. I was a C student and i got an A in this class. this class is not easy, just very intriguing!
Amazing professor! Enjoyed lecture very interesting. Course requires plenty of reading (so if your not willing to read don't bother.) If you do read the tests are SUPER easy. He always hints what he'll be looking for in the exams. Attend lecture to review material or else the slides online won't make sense. LEARNED A LOT, COOL PROF, AND EASY A.
I took this course my first quarter at UCR and after the lynching reading, my roommate and I really never read again. Basically go to class nd he will tell you everything you need to know for the 2 midterms and final. You might wanna read random stuff from long sections like doris nd some experiments! glhf! its an awesome class!
Really interesting class! Very nice approachable professor, midterms and final are a tough though. Two papers, one 500 words another 2000 words, not too bad. You will learn a lot! Don't really need to read, just know the passages he mentions in lecture for exams.
he expected way too much from his students. the final is cumulative and asks for too much details. this class is difficult, you must do ALL the readings and be sure you know it thoroughly. don't take this class if you don't intend to put a lot of time and effort into it.
The class is pretty interesting but the amount of reading is ridonkculous. There is literally 500 pages of reading alltogether and expects us to know them all...
Lecture is pretty interesting, but come time to the final it is crazy. The professor even mentioned that out of maybe 200 students that take this class about 1 in 5 fail... :/
I was inspired within the 1st week of attending his lectures for Phil005! He Is very well spoken. There's ALOT of reading, but even the readings were interesting & inspiring! Just make sure you read because they will start building up. Probably THE BEST class i've taken so far in college even tho i'm a bio major.
You definitely can't just skate by in this class, but if you are even mildly intellectual, you should be able to appreciate the readings. Someone else said about 500 pages...but i think closer to 1000. Do NOT wait until the day before the test to read. That's what i usually do and there's just too much. Do all the extra cred if you want an A.
Schwitzgebel is amazing. We are lucky to have him at our school. I recommend him to everyone. Do you want to learn a lot about philosophy? Do you want to laugh? Do you want to think? Do you want to get smarter? Take this class. (Great breadth classes for grad students, too.)
LOTS of reading. Hard material that you need to accumulate over the whole quarter. He is a great professor for the philosophy department, but the class is difficult with a lot of reading. You must do good on the final in order to pass the class.
Took his "Evil" class.. A lot of work and reading but great class and worth it! Awesomely passionate teacher... Puts himself into everything he lectures.
This class was extremely interesting. There is A LOT of reading, two papers, two midterms, and a final. The class is an easy for those of whom are willing to put forth the effort. This is not a class you can get an A in, without putting hours of reading into. You cannot breeze through it. I highly recommend this class!
This professor is amazing! I absolutely fell in love with Philosophy after taking it. He is very passionate about his area of study and is extremely helpful! I would take every class with him if I could! There is so much reading, but it's totally do-able. You need to put effort if you want to pass. Essays require full understanding of the readings.
He's really passionate about the subject and class, but he definitely could do more to make the class slightly more interesting. There is A LOT of reading. And you cannot skim through the readings because there are quote identifications, multiple choice, etc. on the readings. Just thoroughly understand the readings and you'll be fine.
His tests are impossible. Very interesting professor. Very kind, but not budging whatsoever on his tests. Even the best students will not do very well on them. And he states so. Feels like you're being set up to fail. Too bad because his lectures and what he teaches about is very interesting. Wouldn't recommend.
This is not a class you take to get an easy A, due to the emphasis on a multitude of readings but the fact is, it's 100% doable to ace his midterms and tests if you put the work in and visit your TA. He was an amazing professor, and I highly recommend this course if you're looking for an extensive in depth view of good and evil in human character.
There is so much reading. It is usually about 30 pages every other day. There is a book that you are supposed to have read half way in, and I would suggest starting on that from the beginning. You really have to pay attention to detail, because the material is thick. He does explain a good amount of the reading in class, but not all of it.
Professor Schwitzgebel is a very amazing lecturer. The topics he talk about in his class, "EVIL", really make you question ethics and morality. I enjoyed his class immensely and would consider taking another one of his classes. There is a lot of reading to do, and the tests are very quote specific, but if you put the effort in, you will do great.
The lectures are awesome. The professor is great. The course over-all needs a little work as as far as grading goes. 35% paper, 35 % final, 15 % paper, 15% midterm... The hand outs are so complicated that even Einstein would have difficulty comprehending it. There is a lot of reading. I did like the class over-all.
Schwitzgebel told us the first day that if you dont get a least a D on his final, you will not pass the class & hell fail you, regardless of other grading criteria. The reading for this class alone was ridiculous, considering the three other classes I had. If you like phil, take it. But as an intro course, he expects way too much.
Don't take this class if you don't like to read. The class has two midterms, two essays, and a final, so everything is graded very heavily. His tests are extremely specific and he has a section on quote identification to make sure that you've really read all the material. If you're looking for an easy A I wouldn't recommend this course
the class is a ton of reading, so if you're going to leave the readings last minute be ready to spend HOURS reading them. He does post his powerpoint online, but they have the minimum amount of info so you gotta add extra information that he says in class so pay attention. Overall he does a really good job explaining the concepts in class.
Professor Schwitzgebel is not a mean-spirited individual at all, but don't take his honors discussion. Discussions are not nearly as helpful as the ones with the TA's (save for one in particular), and though he does offer extra credit to his discussion, it is difficult to get. He grades rather harshly and at the start says an A is impossible to get
Prof. Schwitzgebel is endearing and a fantastic philosopher/lecturer. If you are FULLY engaged, you do NOT have to spend hours and hours doing the readings. You DO have to at least skim the readings, attend as many lectures/discussions as possible to understand themes, and know author writing style. Your essays will also need to be very thorough.
I am a hardcore STEM major but this class was easily the most fascinating class I have taken. It requires a lot of effort but takes on an important and worthwhile question, one of my fave course at UCR. Just understand the readings in depth and everything will fall into place. ATTEND LECTURE!
He is very passionate about what he teaches. He teaches the material well, but the problem occurs when you realize how much reading and work needs to be put into his class. He emphasizes that you need to WORK for the A. It will also be difficult if you are not interested in the material, as some can be very dense as they are written by philosophers
This class was very interesting but it was a crazy amount of reading. You have to read and attend lecture if you want to pass. Overall it was a lot of work but Schwitzgebel is very passionate about philosophy so he explains the slides and goes into detail.
Getting an A isn't that hard but you will have to read the articles. He is an amazing professor and is very passionate about philosophy (he is writing a book and shared it with the class and he is an amazing writer) His lectures are succinct and very interesting if you find philosophy cool, I had a great TA, this is the best class Ive taken at UCR.
This is my favorite professor here at UCR. I am a phil major, and he definitely was a big factor in me deciding that. He really opens your mind to a lot of things. He is amazing in lectures, and as long as you go to them as well as do the readings, you can easily get an A. Trust me, its not a "hard" class. Just read and show up to lecture.
The amount of reading this professor gives is ridiculous It's like he thinks his is the only class you're taking. lectures are helpful but you need to stay on top of the reading in order to even comprehend what the lectures are about. Phil of Mind had 2 papers roughly 6 pages long and one long final.
For someone that isn't too big on reading, this class was so hard for me. The amount of readings he gives a week is actually insane. However, this man is going to be the best professor you ever have. The material makes you WANT to read and show up to lecture. The most interesting class I've had so far.
A fair bit of reading but lectures are extremely engaging and interesting - they aren't mandatory but I recommend showing up. Prof. Schwitzgebel is also one of the kindest professors I've ever met, and is willing to help with anything (even personal stuff), and is extremely approachable. I would love to take a class of his in the future.
This class was easily the most interesting course I have taken! It made it easy to read all the papers, but there are just a lot of papers. There were a few I did not have time to read. So if you pay attention close enough to the lectures and take GREAT notes you'll be okay.
lots of information thrown at you in the lectures but don't let it discourage you! he assigns long literature pieces for the course (you most likely will not finish) but he reviews each of them in class as a summary, but do not neglect the readings! they are on the tests; class assignments were pretty easy if you pay attention in lecture;
This is professor is super caring about the material he teaches. The topic of evil is very heavy. He assigns about 30 page readings per class. 2 midterms and 3 hour final. He's a tough grader but understands when you have emergency, etc. Would completely take again. Awesome class.
The best philosophy class out there. However it's also one of the harder classes where you should basically never miss lecture and have to do 20-30+ pages of reading in between every lecture. If you're interested in psychology and philosophy, this is a great class, however expect to put in some work.
Somewhat hard class, but the teacher is clearly very knowledgeable about their class and has great information, most likely my favorite class, the best one I've taken. Essays and exam's are hard if you dont do enough studying. Readings can vary a lot in length, some only a page, others up to 20 pages. They are interesting though.
The lectures themselves are awesome. Probably the most fascinating I've had yet from a professor. The readings are this class' biggest downfall though. There is simply way too much to read in between each lecture, and he seems to be aware of this because we have some days off dedicated to catching up. Greatest professor that I'd never take again.
If you are considering taking this class, please reconsider if you have a life. to score high on test you must read every single detail of the assigned readings as his test pull random quotes from each assigned reading and you must match them with the author based on memory. so i would say avoid this class to protect your mental health.
The professor's lecture is good and interesting. The reading for this course is terrible, too much and little time if you have more than two classes. Tests are very hard based on the memory of what the author said.
Class is heavily based on readings and lectures. The readings are long but very interesting, and lectures summarize everything easily for you. 2 midterms, 1 final exam, 2 papers (1 short, 1 long). He curves A LOT, but don't rely on it. Readings and lecture info are on the test, so be careful of that. Prof makes classes fun and intriguing.
amazing professor and amazing class. there is quite a bit of reading but it was manageable for me. he goes over the readings in class. the material is interesting and he makes it easy to understand. two papers and three exams. exams consist of 10 quote identifying question, 10 multiple choice, and two essay questions. do the reading and go to class
This professor has amazing lectures & it is very clear that he loves his job & knows what he talks about. However, the amount of work he gives his students is absolutely ridiculous. While the essays & midterms are very doable, his final is impossible. With TA strikes its only gotten harder, & he hasn't made the Final easier, only more difficult.
I love Eric! His lecture is enthusiastic and inspiring. He knows his staff and gets passion of it. If you talk to him after class or during the office hour, he would love to answer you questions about almost anything related to philosophy. However, his exam is very hard. Every exam covers all the previous materials with detail multiple choice.
Professor Schwitzgebel is very passionate about his work and his lectures are entertaining. The reading material is a bit hard to understand sometimes but if you attend the lectures and do the reading, you will get an A in the class. This class was amazing and helped opened my eyes to a new world, however just a lot of work. TAs were amazing though
This course was exciting and thrilling at first! The first two midterm were amazing half multiple choice & the other half written! Things however changed with the TA strike, the professor made us write a final essay & 90 question final exam all multiple choice! He unfortunately made the course extremely difficult towards the end!
Okay, this class started off amazing until the strike. Admittedly, there's so much READING involved, and you HAVE to do them, as the midterms + finals are largely quotes directly from the books. I didn't really like my TA, and they're the one who grade your essays (2 total ish), but the prof is so inspirational, and the lectures are so useful.
Great professor and I was personally really interested in the subject. There's a lot of reading but it isn't all necessary to get an A. Attend lecture, discussion and do a good amount of the reading and you'll get an A. He shows a clear love for the subject so he's easy to listen to in lecture.
Super nice, passionate professor with really interesting lectures. 2 midterms and 1 final, multiple choice and free response for both but not difficult if you do the work. Beware of A LOT of readings. Even for a humanities major who likes reading, it's a lot. I would only recommend taking the class if you don't have a heavy workload for the quarter
I took this class during the TA strike but I would have never passed if there was not lenience due to the TA's. This class has SO much reading. I found myself very confused and frustrated throughout the entirety of the course.
One of the best lecturers I've had. Very interesting class, and the teacher was excellent at teaching it, and was quick to answer questions in class. Tests were somewhat difficult and there was a decent amount of readings, but wasn't too hard and the ideas you learn in this class are worth it.
He intentionally makes his tests really hard but gives a very generous curve (75% = A-). There's a decent amount of reading but its manageable and interesting. His tests are hard to prepare for but his lectures are always fun and interesting to attend. Definitely an interesting class and the concepts are really simple at their core Highly recommend
He is a great public speaker, but omgggggg the readings are so boring and difficult to understand. At the same time, if you don't do the readings, you will 100% fail this class as his test are largely quote identification and short response. Mengzi and Xinzu are the single most important readings for this class.
The course itself was interesting but this professor makes things unnecessarily difficult for a breadth course. The readings are boring, length, and overwhelming and they're necessary to pass the class. Exams are heavily reliant on memorization (he does quote identifications of the 8+ authors assigned..). Would not take this course again.
Very interesting class however make sure you stay on top of the readings, the tests are heavy on the readings and there are quite a few of them. Prof is very enthusiastic and passionate about the class and there are also ec opps!
This professor is unnecessarily hard. The amount of essays and exams is unimaginably difficult to keep up with. He is passionate about teaching the course, but passion cannot make up for the unholy workload being tossed at you. Be wary about the bulk of readings he assigns. If you do end up being stuck in this class, good luck.
This professor knows the subject well and is clearly passionate about it. However, the course is very time-consuming. If you have a busy workload, it's not a good fit. The final exam was nearly impossible, and the quotes on the final and midterms were so distinct and random. There was at least 20 readings to be done within the quarter.
Took this class because of the name, "Evil". Ended up being a really fun class to take, especially as a first year! Lots of readings though. Lecture attendance not required, but discussion attendance is required. It's not that hard when you do the readings. Grade is on a curve.
This is a passionate professor who cares about his profession a lot. The detail he puts in his lectures is incredible. But as a breadth course this class is EXTREMELY difficult. Not doing the readings will cause you to fail. And that's majority of the class. Two midterms, essays, and a final that has to be passed with a D- or higher.
Prof Schwitzgebel is an amazing professor. His lectures are interesting and engaging. The material he covers is brutal, but he puts it in ways that are easy to understand. Readings are long, but most of the time they are interesting.
