This class was pretty difficult, but Dr. Sevy did his best to teach the material. Lecture was an absolute must, otherwise the homework was VERY difficult (and often was difficult regardless). Make good use of the TA sessions, and study hard for the tests. Tests are pretty fair, they usually include a short essay and homework problems.

This was the first class in I didn't get an A in since the beginning of my scholastic debut. The class sucked me dry, and put a lot of new swears into my vocabulary, but Prof. Sevy's a decent enough bloke. And if you like learning, a lot of people did that in this class, I heard. He is a good guy, but not a good teacher. He Never had time to talk to me out of class. You can learn from him, but it takes investment. Do all homework, (early) attend lectures (be on time for quizzes) and study like crazy for the tests. For non chem whizzes, this class should be 4-5 credits, not 3. Class is either interesting or deadly boring.

Dr Sevy is an excellent teacher. He presents the essential information in a concise way (for better or for worse) while still addressing applicable side notes. Dr. Sevy's class is very doable if you stay on top of the homework, take notes in lecture and go over them, and go to his office hours and the TA sessions. That being said, it is still very difficult. His tests are designed to be "learning experiences" and take about 4 hours, so make sure you study.

He's a great teacher and he teaches the history along with the chemistry which is interesting. He will help you, but is sometimes impatient. If you go to his office, he lets you know that he's busy and doesn't have time, but he'll help. You can redo the missed portions of all tests (except the final) for 1/3 of the credit (i.e. 70% goes to 80%).

Just not a good professor doesn't explain concepts well more concerned with getting class over with than actually helping his students learn. Has lots of students but still not an excuses to not care about your students individually. Take it from anyone else.

I think the reason why Professor Sevy isn't rated higher is because chemistry is just hard. You have to do all the work and extra practice and have a good TA to do well. However, Professor Sevy gives great powerpoint lectures: he is great at explaining hard concepts and almost always makes something explode. Low key a pyromaniac but I loved it.
