This guy is a pretty good teacher but could be nerdy at times. For example, he said he had a chemistry set as a kid and looked really happy as he said it. But in the end, he's a good guy and I love him...did I just accidentally type that? Well the world has to know some time that I love Eric Sheagley, that sexy little man with the receding hairline
His hairline isn't receding. It has been that way since high school. Ask him to see a prom picture.
Very good teacher. Can communicate material clearly without murdering us on tests like other teachers. I felt I learned more from him than I did all year. He has a nice guy attitude that is very encouraging and makes you really like chem. I hope that he continues to teach and I would take another class from him.
This is a good teacher and his lectures are interesting. I recommend this professor if your taking chemistry because he communicates at a level appropriate for beginning college students and is also concerned with your comprehension. He actually cares if you lear the material or not. Great guy as well.
Extremely easy if you read the book and do EVERY SINGLE PRACTICE PROBLEM in the back of the chapters, no joke! He expects you to know the concepts of each chapter, and he's very easy going and will help you if you need it. If you attend every class, read the book and do practice problems, this class should be an easy A. :)
Lecture was exact copy of the book, even the pictures, boring. Tests were worded very different then we were taught, very confusing.
Absolutely fabulous! He makes himself available for students. Class is very interactive - which really helps for a lecture at 9:00 am. He's quick to respond to questions and requests and (very unlike my other profs at the moment) doesn't make you feel dumb for not understanding all of the material.
He lets you use notes on tests which is unheard of if you have ever been in Chemistry.
It's tough to learn chemistry in a classroom of 300-400 students. However, he makes the lectures very interactive and manages to make the concepts interesting by using real world analogies. He's got a great sense of humor and seems to be willing to help as much as he can. The lines at the end of class are very long!
If you are looking for an interesting class, this isn't the one for you. Dr. Sheagley doesn't explain concepts well, and you are tested on concepts not covered in lecture.
He's alright. Has a pretty good sense of humor, but lectures are kind of boring. Yes, he does copy his notes from the text book (pictures and all). Not bad, but not great.
Sheagley is really fair. The lectures may be a little dry (you can miss a few and still be just fine) but his tests are extremely fair. As long as you read the book and do a lot of practice problems you'll be golden. Overall, he is just a really nice guy who remembers what it was like to be a student.
This was a really good class. Dr. Sheagley will always help you if you need it. He is a fair grader, and although his homework assignments are tough, his tests aren't meant to trick you. His lectures can be interesting, and he does a good job trying to relate chemistry to everyday life. He always seems happy, and eager to teach.
PROS: Puts everything on blackboard. Friendly and knowledgeable. Young and full of energy. Uses online programs for HW (mastering Chemistry). FULL PAGE OF NOTES FOR TESTS! Cons: TEST ARE HARD AS HELL AND LONG! Mastering Chemistry costs $50! Lectures really aren't worth much...power point :(.
Dr. sheagley is a great person, but his lectures are awful, he does not prepare his lecture before teaching, he makes a lot of mistakes during lecture that really confuses students. his exams are incomprensible, and does not give partial credits. you might consider other options.
Dr. Sheagley is an okay instructor. I agree with the comments below that his exams are indeed very difficult and throw you for a loop,no matter how much you study. The lectures were also very boring. However the quizzes were really easy and his grading was pretty fair. I would recommend taking another instructor, if possible.
Average grade on the first exam was a low D: that is horrible. I am seriously considering dropping and retaking, unless the class is heavily curved. He is new, very confusing and slow. He managed to confuse almost everyone on a simple topic like sig figs (pathetic). Never again with this prof.
Dr. Sheagley is a horrible professor. I have attended every class, done every assignment, and read the chapters and I am still struggling. He is sloppy with his lectures and his tests, but demands accuracy from the students. Worst part was how rude he was to me when I went to see him during office hours. Never take a class from him.
I agree with the previous comments: tough tests! The wording on the tests are different than what is taught in class, in the book, and on the online assignments. When numerous students complained about this, he said he doesn't reward the ability to do the same problem a million times, but doesn't teach the alternative. So not helpful!
To get a C: Study 10-15 hours per week, do all practice exams, do all online homework, do all practice problems (40+ problems per chapter) and extra credit. To get a B: Same as above + sell your soul to the devil. To get an A: Same as above + retake the class several times.
You really need to do a lot of practice problems, read the textbook, and review previous tests to do well on his exams. The homework and practice problems are easy, but exam problems are really hard; they require you to put a lot of concepts together. Sometimes I don't even know where to start. Basically... study, study, study!
The midterms were literally KILLER, but the final was passable. I felt like I never understood anything, even though I am great in all my other classes. Sheagly is a nice guy, but he is smart in a way that doesn't translate to students very well.
He is really helpful and always tries to be available to students. The tests are not always easy, but if you show your work, he gives partial credits. Always works on the problems together in the class and makes sure we understand the material. He is not condescending to us no matter what kind of questions asked. Great professor!
His classes are difficult, but are passable if you apply yourself, and he grades on a curve. Tests are hard; read the textbook and understand how the concepts interact with each other. Overall, a good prof. who actually cares about his job and students. If you are struggling, drop in during office hours and he will do anything he can to assist.
Sheagley is amazing! All you have to do is pay attention during class and read the textbook and do the problems. He also posts notes so basically you don't have to take notes during class which is great! The tests were very reasonable and he also curved them generously.. I really enjoyed his class. I would absolutely recommend him to other students
Sheagley really makes you think with his teaching...that's a good thing and a bad thing. The good part is he keeps you entertained in his interactive classes (and he's kinda cute too!), but the bad part is that you really have to understand and pratice applying the concepts because his tests are harder than other teachers. :)
Sheagley is a nice teacher and very engaging with his creative class experiments :). He's not easy but the difficulty level is appropriate.
Prof. Sheagley (SHAY-glee, not shee-glee) is a great lecturer, and makes this stuff as interesting and digestible as possible. He is obviously passionate about chemistry, and knows the subject very well. He's also just a nice guy.
Sheagly is a great professor! I switch into his class after doing poorly with a different professor and improved very much. He makes the class enjoyable and does demonstrations during most classes. The test aren't to bad, just take notes and do the practice problems and your good!! he's kind of adorable too so that's nice!
Tests are poorly written and difficult to understand. Poor explanation of material in class. I attended every lecture and did every practice problem available and still was not able to get an A.
I had this professor for 3 terms. I read every chapter, attended nearly every lecture, did well on homework and still could barely pull C+ on exams. He was clear in his lectures, made lectures interesting and overall a great teacher. but he is terrible at writing exams. and it comes at the expense of his students, the class avg on the final was 62%.
I've had this awful teacher first term, which was extremely easy but boring. When I had Eric, I got exact opposite. He was extremely interesting but hard. One final I studied like crazy, but got low score. Second one i didn't study at all, and got a better grade than first time. If u CAN study a lot. Take him. ill be fun. If not avoid him.
i was so exited to be taking chemistry. this instructor not only squashed my excitement, but killed all redemption of the subject. the instructor is a wonderful person and has a great personality. he is very good at teaching 1-1. but a terrible lecturer. his exams are UNREASONABLY HARD. do not recommend.
Oversees Chem labs which are taught by grad students. Lab was fine and I felt great going into the final. However, during the final (written by him) I was completely stunned at the questions, many topics which were not covered in class NOR found anywhere in the texts. I am an exceptional student and found myself flabbergasted by many questions.
Sadist. Ruins people's dreams. Why? Does it please you? Your lectures make everything seem easy, then your exams are short-timed and as difficult as you can possibly make them. Some people didn't have chemistry in high school. Some people didn't have the luck to have a head start in life. Why do you do this to good people who deserve a chance?
I had Dr. Sheagley for the gen chem sequence. His exams were challenging, but if you read textbook, do the homework (even the ones you don't turn in) and ask him questions, you will do fine. He is very helpful in and outside of class when you have questions. In class demos were a lot of fun! He has a good sense of humor too.
I really think he is a nice guy, however not very clear and concise in his lectures. This made for a lot of confusion. I feel his style could use a little help.
Gave chapter pre-quizzes in which you essential had to learn everything about the upcoming chapter, take a quiz for a grade, and then spent the next few classes going over what you took a quiz on. Also the exams are exceptionally hard. I did all the homework, and went to class every day and all that was not reflected in my midterm grade whatsoever.
Great professor. Very clear and engaging. I am not a Chemistry major but needed this class for my B.S. He's good. Take him for all your Chemistry needs.
Awesome fun teacher, verty interesting lectures! I have never loved chemistry like this!
He does OK in lecture as long as he sticks to the script, however he does a poor job of handling questions. I got the impression that he doesn't realize students have other classes and don't have time to memorize every element in the periodic table (and the countless data tables in the book). Not bad, definitely not great. Will not take again.
Eric is a great prof who brings a lot of enthusiasm to his lectures and it's obvious he puts work into the GenChem series. I would have to disagree with the other reviewers who said the exams were unreasonably hard. As long as you take time to work through at least the medium diff problems in book, you should do fine.
Really nice, nerdy dude. Exactly what you would want in a chem professor. Tests are a little hard and he gives you a time limit. But he teaches well.
Love this man. Would recommend to anybody.
Sheagley is a great professor, it is clear that he loves chemistry. The experiments he does during lectures are great! He is there to help students and is patient. Notes allowed for exams, homework problems suggested to help prep for exams but not turned in, pre quizes done online and quizes in class. Overal GREAT professor!
He knows his stuff really well, he's funny, and does a lot of demos in class. I had a horrible professor first term, took him second term and liked him. He taught better but the tests are really hard. To get an A you MUST study and do practice problems, and you MUST read the book. If you don't, you will not get an A. Not a class for lazies.
AWESOME! I attended every class, read every chapter, did the optional practice problems, and I got A's on everything (without a curve). The subject is difficult but he goes out of his way to make sure you get it. Pre-quizes don't require you to learn the material, just look ahead at section headings. Tests are well paced if you know the material.
Sheagley has a great personality in lecture, which makes the 2 hours fly by! I enjoyed his powerpoint slides because they were straight to the point, the homework was a challenge, however I did all the problems, even the challenge problems. Although, I didn't get the grade I felt I deserved (C). I am gonna take him again, he challenges me!
Sheagley has great lecture style. In class it's easy to follow his train of thought and grasp the concepts. His exams are BRUTAL. Lectures do NOT prepare you for exams. Reading the chapters does NOT prepare you for the exams. Doing the online homework does NOT prepare you for the exams. He's a nice guy, but save your GPA and take someone else.
This Professors exams do NOT reflect his lectures. Although he says he's not trying to trick you, he goes out of his way to do just that. His exams are very confusing in the way they're worded. He will lull you to sleep with easy examples during lecture and then hammer you with unreasonably hard/very confusing questions. He's nice and lets you bring a note sheet but I would give all that up just to comprehend his test questions. Overall, I would avoid this instructor.
A lot of people complain about his tests, and they are definitely tough, but if you read and do the questions at the end of each chapter, especially the tough ones, you will be ok. He doesn't want his students to fail and he gives a great curve. He loves the subject and his enthusiasm is contagious. Would totally take him again.
He is very clear in lecture. His tests are challenging but if you work the practice problems and study you should do fine. Be prepared to have to think for yourself and use logic. I would recommend taking calculus before hand as many people with issues in chemistry have more issues with the math involved. But He is a great overall teacher.
His expectations are unclear. He is obsessed with math, but he's not a math teacher. You won't know the problems he wants you to know. Problems discussed in class and previous exams are not examples of the questions he will ask. Any of the 500 problems assigned are game. The median grade for the first exam was 60, over half the class is below avera
Lectures are very clear. Adds a little material here and there that's not in the book, but mostly sticks to the book. Example exams provided are great preparation for actual tests. Very approachable. Encourages questions even though it's a 200-person class.
Overall a very nice, genuine prof. Approachable and wants you to learn. However, his test questions tend to be hard to understand and much more difficult than the end of chapter and practice problems. The tests are also around 7 questions worth 15 pts each so if you get one wrong you're pretty much screwed.
I think he is a great teacher. Lectures are easy to understand, and has all of his notes on his website. Tests aren't that hard either. I got good grades on the exams without studying much.
The simplicity of his lectures will lull you into a false sense of security when taking the exams. Which range from moderate to very difficult.
This chemistry prep course got me running in the chemistry game again. His use of chemistry modules in ALEKS was an invaluable tool that I will be using in CH221. He sparks your interest in chemistry with in-class chemistry demonstration and also gives challenging questions on tests. If you can put all the chapters together than you can pass.
I love Sheagley. I felt though that the ALEKS software I had to use for the class taught more than he did though. Good teacher. I don't find his exams to be hard at all. I get high Bs or low As on all of them. He's super stoked about chemistry, and he's just absolutely precious. Definitely would recommend.
Dr Sheagley is a great professor. His tests are hard but if you work hard and study a lot you will do fine. One of my favorite teachers at PSU!!
It is true is tests are a bit challenging but if you take the time to study you will do alright. He really cares about his job and his students. He wants to see you succeed. Take advantage of those office hours. Do not expect a curve!
He is a friendly teacher. However, his lectures don't have anything to do with his tests. The tests are unreasonably hard. The problems that are worked on in class and on Mastering Chemistry are nothing compared to the tests and quizzes. The class average on the first test was 60. More than half of a class of 200 students didn't pass.
Sheagley is a great professor. He keeps his lectures entertaining by doing demonstrations and being quite lively. His sarcastic remarks and jokes are great. I took his prep. chemistry class 199 and knew I wanted to take HIS chem221 class. His class is pretty challenging, but you can tell he cares about teaching his students and helping them learn.
Sheagley is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He will spend an entire 2 hours working problems in a monotone voice. His exams are poorly written and feel like they are written to intentionally confuse. Please take anyone but sheagley. The only upside is that he usually curves.
Exams hard? Not if you know you actually know the material. More often than not, the people that complain about exams being too difficult are the ones that just don't put enough time into studying the material. There are plenty of resources to aid in success. e.g library chemistry tutors, chem commons, and instructor office hours; utilize them.
The exams are hard, but if you are taking the time to study, it will reflect on the exams. Sheagley will do anything to help you succeed if you put in the effort, he doesn't want to see anyone fail. He has demos almost every class and loves chemistry, so he is knowledgeable and I recommend taking him!
I wasn't looking forward at all to gen chem back before taking CH221 but Sheagley made it interesting and occasionally fun. The exams can be tricky and it'd be nice to have some multiple choice padding, but he allows a page of notes and curves at the end of the term.
This is a great professor. He definitely cares about his students and also does fun demonstrations. True that the material can be challenging, but chem isn't a cakewalk, you have to study. Tests & exams can be pretty hard, but he generally curves very generously... if you really study for this class, you won't have a problem.
The coolest thing about Sheagley is that he allows a page of notes for the exams. That being said, his tests are tricky and can be challenging. He's very helpful though and clear in his lecture and he enjoys what he does. His curve is pretty generous, but you have to be willing to work hard to earn your grade.
very difficult, his explanations are sometimes vague or hard to follow. grading is easy because of the extreme curve.
This class is not for the faint of heart. Study daily, do the online homework as well as the book work and you'll be fine. This is not an easy class by any means. The tests are difficult, but I felt like they were an accurate representation of the material covered.
Put in at least 1 -2 hours of studying every day for this course and you will pass with flying colors. If you don't put up then you will end up like the rest of the whiny people who didn't get a grade handed to them. This professor is inspiring and will teach you things you will remember for the rest of your life. Highly recommended.
This dude is awesome! His exams are consistent with the material he teaches, nothing tricky. He has in class demonstrations and it's fun. If you attend class and do the online homework that he gives, which are minimal, you'll sure will succeed. I had little knowledge of chemistry before attend this class and now I know a lot, thanks to him.
Yes the class is hard; don't expect to get a good grade by just showing up and listening. Do the practice problems and ask for help… he's very approachable and helpful. You can tell he's a good teacher; he tries to make chemistry interesting, does experiments during his lectures, and relates it back to everyday life.
Awful class, more then half the class got a bad grade or dropped out. Teacher even went as far to make a comment stating that he has never taught a class that he hasn't had to curve the grade. That does not make a good teacher. If you want to study your butt off but not get a good grade at all take this class.
The general chemistry series is pretty math-heavy, and while the lectures are enough to learn the why and how, you definitely need to do a ton of practice problems before exams or it'll be rough. The exams are a large portion of the grade. Sheagley himself is a great guy and you can tell he loves his subject.
My expected grade notwithstanding, he is very approachable and clearly passionate about his field. It is also clear that he cares about his performance as an instructor. He curves grades, but because his instruction is poor, as has been suggested. Rather, exams require competence (which I have too often lacked) which I prefer that to watered down.
Professor Sheagley is a kind person who really cares about his students and wants to make sure they understand the subject matter. His lectures are clear and his teaching style makes concepts easy to understand (and chemistry is one of my most difficult subjects). However, Sheagley's exams are difficult - studying and practice problems are a must.
Good teacher but exams are extremely difficult - they are worded much differently than many of the questions we cover in class. Even if you practice a lot the exam questions can be bewildering. I wish we would do in-class problems that were similar to the those in the exams because sometimes the exam questions are just overwhelming.
Dr. Sheagley is awesome! He does demos to keep things interesting, and you are allowed a page of notes on the exams! The exams are difficult because the questions tend to require critical thinking (you may have to think for a bit about how to approach some problems). But that is part of chemistry. He's hot too, more motivation to go to lecture.
He is a great teacher but those exams are quite challenging. I feel I have a very thorough understanding of the material but still ended up with a C before the curve. The exam questions require so much critical thinking that an understanding of the material is not enough to really succeed in his class.
Dr. Sheagley knows the material well and is passionate about chemistry. His exams are challenging but nothing that he doesn't teach and he's there to answer questions as well as usually curves depending on how the class did.
You have to work for your grade. His exams are not too ridiculous and it felt they were fair (time-consuming exams though), they make you think about the relationships between chapters and concepts and if you don't spend some time out of class on these relationships you will succeed. Dr. Sheagley is a really good professor, I recommend completely!
He was a very interesting and entertaining professor. He makes the class interesting and he teaches with passion. The exams are a little difficult I suggest in doing all the problems from the textbooks. It is awesome that he allows one page of notes for the exam! Anything can be on it. I highly recommend the Dr. Sheagley
He was a great teacher for 221, less so for 222, and for 223 he isn't a good teacher. The exams are nothing like the practice problems from the book and the practice exams is phenomenally easier than the actual exams. His lectures are understandable but the fact that the material covered isn't indicative of the exams is frustrating.
The first exam was fine. The second exam, he returned to his old ways of giving us unnecessarily difficult problems where just having an understanding of the concepts isn't enough to succeed. If we are going to be getting these crazy problems I wish we would at least practice them in class. Other than these exams, he is a great teacher/lecturer.
One of the best profs at PSU. Cares about students success. shows it with his resolve to maintain the level of rigor he expects. Do all the hw and brush up on your algebra and you'll be fine. Dr. Sheagley is a genuinely awesome human being. If not for your love of chem, take this man's class for the privilege of being exposed to his aura.
Dr Sheagley is a great teacher. His exams can be tricky and require critical thinking. You have to be willing to put the time in if you want to get a good grade. He is great in explaining any questions you have if you see him during office hrs. I highly recommend taking his chemistry class!
Dr.Sheagley is the best chemistry doctor on the globe.Took chem in Arabic in Iraq and in Syria, and have never met a doctor who loves to help his students like him.Classes are very fun,and he creates an awesome environment for his students to learn.tests are similar to what covered in class, so no surprises. Office hours is lifesaving.
Good teacher. Very difficult exams. Study like crazy.
He is a good teacher and explains things thoroughly and really well. If you go to his office hours he will walk things through you no matter how basic it is. Do not take the "Average grade" listed on his profile here lightly. Even though it says A, most people in his class do NOT get A's. His tests are very hard and you will have to study a lot.
He was hesitant to help in office hours and didn't reply to my emails asking for help until it was too late. I was sent off with a wish of good luck. Its a huge class so I totally get it, but I do wish I could have been more recognized.
Reading and homework makes sense, but when it came to his tests, they had VERY little to do with the homework. Even if you did the problems from the chapter readings, he would find a way to trick you on his exams. Worse teacher by far. I wasn't looking for an easy A. Studied like crazy and didn't get the results I worked hard for. Disappointment.
His tests don't come out of nowhere; they are exactly what you see in his examples in class and on Sapling. The only things that change are the numbers! It may be hard to figure out which equation to use, but you're allowed an entire page of notes. Pay attention in class, try to solve the problems before he does, and you have an A/B in the bag.
I found myself just going to class because he is eye candy. But yeah his class is great. He does plenty of example problems, spices things up with live demos. Just an all around nice guy and good prof.
Dr. Sheagley is an extremely competent teacher who is very friendly and helpful. He has open office hours almost everyday of the week and if you can't make those, you can send him an email and he'll schedule a time with you that works with your schedule. He's very helpful, curves his tests, and pulls problems from the book. TOTALLY RECOMMEND HIM!!
Generally quite helpful when it came to answering questions during POGIL work time. Offers a fair amount of extra credit on exams. Exam questions are usually extremely similar to the book problems that he assigns, as well as the practice tests provided on D2L. The subject matter can be challenging, so be prepared to do some studying!
very nice guy, but very difficult and confusing. you have to learn chem by yourself. AND that is it. not a very interesting and clear lecture at all.
Dr. Sheagley is great- personally. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking for a friend in CH-222, I was looking to learn chemistry. His tests are discontinuous and often unrelated to course material. Also, research POGIL, because that's all you're gonna get here. Ref: undergrad gpa 3.6; post-bacc science gpa 3.8 (until this class, anyway)
This is my 2nd quarter with Sheagley, and I like him a lot. The short lectures before POGIL are pretty clear and as always he is helpful during POGIL. I could ususlly get away with jumping into the POGIL without reading the text, and when exam day was near, I would do all his practice exams (excellent study tool) and get over 90-100+% each time.
Pretty awesome professor; knows his stuff and helps with any questions. Offers extra credit on exams. Super easy to get homeworkparticipation(clicker) points; just show up and do it 80% of the time. Exams are *generally* similar to practice problems and sample exams. It is a conceptually challenging class but Sheagley makes it so you can succeed.
He's a fair grader. READ THE BOOK HE MAKES YOU GET. He's a really good professor, but his lectures are important!
I would probably give this guy a better rating if it weren't for the awful POGIL thing we were doing. He's a nice guy and he truly tries to help.
Sheagle is a great professor, he loves what he does and its excellent explaining it. Unfortunately the whole POGIL teaching is really awkward and not helpful. I didn't learn anything from the people I was sitting, my recommendation for anyone who hates working in groups of useless people, just sit all the way in the back and do the hw, & clicker qs
This class is HARD, & requires careful reading of the text & regular studying to get an A! POGIL (google it) is used, & I found it to be a waste of time when correct answers weren't provided (most the time) bcuz ur relying on ur group 4 help. 2hrs a week of online HW, 3 quizzes, 3 major tests. He helped me outside of class when I asked for it.
Dr. Sheagley is great, even though POGIL is awful and useless. He gives you an entire 8 1/2 x 11" cheat sheet on every test and if you do all of the practice exams before tests then you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect. The work load is reasonable, and if you actually do the practice problems exams shouldn't be hard.
Sheagley is a very helpful guy so use his office hours! Study the practice exams a lot and you'll do fine. Brush up on problems in the book. Neither of the two exams prior to the final are dropped, so keep that in mind. Did curve at the end of my class. Majority of the lecture is POGIL so that may or may not be useful to your learning style.
Beware of POGIL.. Leaves you sitting in class relying on other clueless people to teach most things. As far as exams go, they were a lot like practice exams and he gives you one page of notes to bring to class. Sheagley is a pretty cool dude, office hours are helpful.
Dr. Sheagley gives you all the tools you need to succeed in this class. You really earn your grade in the class. Read the chapters before class, helps understand the POGIL, go to all office hours (extremely helpful), always ask questions(he is happy to assist). Read and follow the syllabus, you earn your grade fair and square. Such an awesome guy!
Absolutely fantastic teacher. One of the best I have had so far and Chemistry isn't even my major. Classes are hard but he gives you all the resources you need to do well just have to put in the work.
Sheagley is a great professor but you have to come ready to learn.. Work hard for the grade and you'll get what you deserve. Not a lot of lecture time mostly group work in class which I'm not crazy about but you never know when he'll give a good lecture (go to class!!).
He teaches class, and structures tests as if you have nothing else going on in your life. Often talks fast and switches so quickly between slides of the power point that it cannot be written down. The tests that are generated seem to have no bearing on the handouts or homework questions.
Very hard class, but if you carefully read the text and do all the (optional) end of chapter problems youll be well prepared and likely to get an A. Grade is mostly based on 2 midterms and a cumulative final test. He is great about responding to emails if you need help. Pogil was a negative experience for me. I really like Eric as a teacher tho.
LAB REVIEW: labs are very difficult, and should be worth 4 credits so its very frustrating to spend 10hrs a week on lab work outside of class, for a 1 credit (3hr lab) class. The lab is taught by a TA, who sometimes grades easy and sometimes grades very hard depending on the TA you get. This lab created a lot of stress for me bcuz of homework.
Dr. Sheagley is a great professor, but the use of POGIL by the chemistry department is an issue. Dr. Sheagley provides many opportunities for extra credit. Allows a full page of notes on exams. Clicker questions make up 40 points of grade. Very helpful during office hours. Exams are tough so make sure you do practice questions in the book.
POGIL is the worst guest in the limited, structured party that is chemistry class. After taking this class (w/ this professor) for two terms, I finally realized that actually going to class was a waste of my time. As a student who learns by lecture, my time in class was a total loss. If I want to hear from my peers, I join them in study group.
Not very good. You are in for a rough ride. Read book or find online tutor and study as much as you can or you will NOT MAKE IT
He does really well for having 400 student lectures, he's very communicative in class and through D2L. The POGIL stuff is pointless but that's the chemistry department not him. He's clear and generous with grading. I'd recommend him for the introductory chem courses. He's a nice guy as well, helpful during office hours.
Gen Chem-The lectures are insightful and are well-taught. He's very accessible and the labs are fun! The POGIL days weren't helpful at all - everyone's out for their own grade. And despite averaging 2 hours of additional study every day, and workshop, I couldn't even get a B. Average for the class was around a D+ or C-. Discouraging.
He is great. His lectures are very helpful. There are group works as well which are also very helpful. There some extra credit opportunities as well. If you practice for exams, they are gonna be so easy. His office hours are also very helpful.
He is definitely not hard. You earn your grade; an A wasn't super hard & pass was super easy. Here are some tips for you to do good: - MC, Quiz Book; try to understand it. - Lecture super helpful if u understand book. - Books; highlight & focus on main point for each section, add more in class - still need help, office hours super helpful
He gives many resources to easily pass. In-class workbook problems help you a lot, the online homework is time consuming but helps a lot, his lectures are simple with good examples/step by step, he's great during office hours/study hours for help. DO HIS PRACTICE EXAMS. They. will. prepare. you. If anything, DO PRACTICE EXAMS BEFORE TESTS!
He is a very caring professor. He will do whatever to help you succeed. Office hours recommended. Go to class and ask questions when doing group work. Lots of story problems on exams. He will give partial credit on exams if it looks like you have partial understanding. Always double check the grading on your exam the professor is will regrade!
seems like a real cool guy. However I struggled with his method of teaching and found my self desperately seeking help outside of class. tutors have a much more clear method of getting to the same conclusion. If your not stoked about chem dont take this class because it will bury your GPA.
Dr. Sheagley is pleasant and approachable, though at times his lectures can be a bit more confusing than necessary. This is one of the few classes I would suggest using the book more than the lectures, simply because they are short enough chapters and make his lectures more clear.
Okay lecturer; I did learn some stuff from him. POGIL activities are sort of a waste of time, but clicker points makes class attendance mandatory. HW's are extremely difficult and take hours. Taking workshop might be the better choice. I was %0.3 from the next letter grade and he refused to round me up sadly. Tests are long so don't take your time.
Sheagley is humble, personable and accessible to students. He has a true desire for students to learn the material.
he knows chemistry but he does not know how to teach it. And he almost always makes mistakes when trying to teach us something new
Obviously knows his chemistry but expects everyone to keep up with his often ridiculous pace. Test questions do not match book problems or handouts and if you don't get help outside of class, you will likely struggle.
This class is the most boring class I've ever taken at PSU, and I think it is all due to the professor's style. He makes you purchase a $40 iClicker so he can grade you on participation, and his lecture is just him reading off of the powerpoint slides. He livens it up with a few examples though. I got an A, but you should take it at PCC instead.
Exam questions are NOTHING like the questions he gives in class or handouts. Exams are often worded in a confusing way. Only way you do good in this class is study day and night. Teacher is cool and down-to-earth but doesn't know how to teach. Exam questions are often long worded problems that you've never seen in your life! Beware and study hard!
He says from the get-go, he does not give you a grade, you earn it. This is college people, no one is going to hold your hand and give you a participation trophy. Work really hard and you'll do well. This is a science class to prepare you for the realities of STEM. Sheagley gives you the tools to succeed if you are willing to utilize them.
Prepare to get BLASTED on the exams because the problems are not even close to the ones he asks in class. Exams are often long and never given enough time to complete. Only way you do good in this class is to have prior knowledge of the materials or study HARD. The only savior is you get a note sheet for every exam but that rarely even helps.
It's a hit or miss with this guy. Sometimes he gives out random long-story problems on the exams that you have absolutely no idea how to do. He also asks questions about POGIL activities on the exams which is usually a wild guess for me. He often makes mistakes on the exam and you get some free points for it. Would not recommend if you hate math.
Entertaining lecturer, he gives a lot of extra credit in the class and sometimes curves the course. He puts up old exams to help you study and usually they're the same with different numbers or elements. I took him for the whole year of gen chem, very encouraging and answers to e-mails in a timely manner. The textbook is also helpful if you read it
i recommend reading the textbook and reworking a ton of practice problems from the end of the chapter because he moves super fast. sometimes the exams require you to combine equations so you really have to understand / be able to integrate the concepts.
Sheagley made me very interested in chemistry, he is passionate. But even after reading the book, getting an A in lab, going to the workshop, getting an online tutor, studying, nothing prepared me for the exams. Nothing I learned translated into a good grade. It was maddening. The POGIL method is a joke, teach your students.
It's a chemistry class, it's hard. Sheagley has hard tests, but if you practice outside of class an A isn't impossible. He's extremely accessible outside of class and his office hours are splendid. If you don't take his class serious, he probably won't take you serious
Beware taking this terror class, YOU WILL GET SWAMPED. After the first week, you'll be knee deep in work that the Shaggy will bamboozle you with by solving the problems a different way everytime. When it comes to the exams, you are toast. Get used to running marathons, cuz that's what it feels like with his time limits. Your life will only be chem
He's made a few mistakes in the powerpoints, but has thus far always been amiable and thanked whoever pointed it out. Often does random experiments in class for no other reason than for the hell of it.
Tough teacher. Read the book. Did all mastering chemistry. Got an A in lab. Studied the exam prep sheet and still didnt do well on exams. For once I wish an exam prep sheet was actually useful towards the tests.
Dr. Sheagley is a great instructor; he makes it clear that he will not give you a grade, you have to earn it. Lectures are fun and intriguing, tests are challenging (a page of notes is allowed); he gives good feedback and readily corrects any errors found on tests/slides. Participation is necessary through clicker questions and group worksheets.
I only participated in class and took the workshop class too. Didnt do Mastering Chemistry and I didnt read the textbook ever. Still was able to get an A. Tests dont give you enough time, but fairly easy content. Just pay attention in class and take notes. He suggests you do the exercises in the textbook to be successful as well.
Took CH221 last term and CH222 this term. Its a chemistry class its going to be hard but he is the best chemistry teacher Ive ever had. He is very accessible outside of class and truly wants to help his students. The only downside is the limited amount of time on the tests but he does round grades pretty often.
Dr. Sheagley is a great instructor. He is concise during lectures and wants you to do well. As long as you go through powerpoints, read the textbook, and have a good understanding of the material, you will pass the class. Chemistry is a difficult subject, so make sure to put in a study time to understand concepts/equations. He usually curves tests.
Not enough time on very math heavy tests. You're allowed a full 8.5x11 note sheet for the exams but no matter what you put on them, that material is never on the test (I've been through 5 of his exams and no one I've spoken to has been successful in prepping a good note sheet for him). Attendance optional, but graded questions each session so....
Dr. Sheagley is so nice and caring. His exams are extremely difficult, but he puts a couple of extra credit questions on the exams. First and second term he did curve, but third term he just curves the overall grade at the end of the term. Reading the textbook is very important and do the end of the chapter problems.
I loved this professor, and the in class activities were helpful in understanding the material. They may feel tedious, but it really helps you get the equations down. The professor is a real gem, and I love him and his teaching style. He made me not hate Chemistry anymore
Sheagley is very passionate about chemistry and inspired me more than any chem teacher to want to learn chemistry. Test were very rough. I feel like the could be better adapted to show what students know. Many hard working students got 70-50% consistently on tests. This would be a definite 5/5 score if tests were less testing skills and more chem.
Nice man but tests are so hard and not similar to homework, activities, or clicker questions. Lecture videos are posted so I recommend getting clicker app Reef instead of buying a clicker so then you can just stay at home & then watch lecture.
Sheagley is a nice person and really passionate about chemistry. But his exams are really difficult with very short time limits. The clicker questions, worksheets, and homework just could not prepare you well for his exams. And also the problems on his exams worth so much points, that you could not missed more than 2 questions if you want an A.
There is a lot to stay on top of. Get excellent grades on the quizzes, homework, activities, and be present during lectures for the "clicker questions," and regardless of your exam scores, you should be ok. (You get a full page of notes for each exam, but only 3 min per problem. Too many questions. Too little time.)
Not really a big Chemistry fan, but Sheagley really made Chem interesting with his lectures and cute lil experiments. His tests are fairly challenging, but enjoyed the challenge. iClickers are used so attendance is highly recommended. Overall, a very good teacher and would love to take science with him again.
He's really good, straight to the point, and does cool experiments in class. The class is not hard. I would HIGHLY suggest taking the chemistry workshop, doesn't matter if you are good at chemistry or not, the workshop provides more comprehensive problems that you won't see in class, in the text, or on ALKES. I didn't use the textbook that much.
Class work will not prepare you for the difficulty of the exams. Takes easy material and turns it into difficult questions. I felt like the class was too easy, not enough problems were done in class, I essentially self taught myself chemistry through ALEKS. He should be teaching graduate classes.
Overall solid professor for a difficult subject. Chemistry is hard, but Dr. Sheagley doesn't make it harder than it needs to be.
Professor Sheagley is a really nice professor. He's someone who is very passionate about chemistry and wants us to fully understand the concepts of chemistry through his mini-labs every lecture. But when it comes to the exams, the problems given are worded differently and the things that we spend little time in class on he makes it major in exams.
I was afraid of taking him since a lot of people had negative things to say about him. As a straight A high school student, I knew I was smart but I also knew I wasn't a hard worker. Both my sisters took him before me and got C and I was nervous. However, after taking him I realized he's a wonderful professors and your grade is based on your effort
He was a really great professor who made chemistry much less intimidating even though it's a difficult class. He explains concepts really well and office hours are very helpful. You will need to do lots of practice problems to do well on the tests but if you do you shouldn't have any problems! Definitely would recommend taking class with him.
Coming from someone who hated chemistry in high school, I learned to enjoy taking chemistry once I took the class with Dr. Sheagley. Chemistry is a tough subject, but Dr. Sheagley does a good job at teaching it in a manner where you will understand. He likes to do a lot of demos in class.
Honestly the worst professor you will take in your life. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! Took his class twice and was forced to drop twice although I knew all the content from the first time. His ALEKS HW is a nightmare if you are a beginner to chemistry. CLASS IS VERY HARD midterms wont be similar to the reviews or homework!!!
dont be fooled this is the hardest class I've ever taken. Most of the class doesn't pass the tests because they are too hard and are ALWAYS different from the review he gives. SAVE YOUR MONEY! don't take this class
Dr. Sheagley is a great professor! His lectures are clear and engaging. He also has clicker questions to help you stay engaged with the material. Although there are a lot of quizzes and reading to do, plus the end of chapter questions and ALEKS hw, it makes you understand the material. Class is setup to where you earn a grade based on effort.
Dr. Sheagley is a great professor. He teaches the material very well and he keeps things exciting for us. His tests and difficult, but they're not too bad. Just attend the lecture, do the readings, do ALEKS, and you'll be fine
I really have never had a teacher who has been more available to help students learn. He had office hours before and after class, and also on non lecture days. He was also always available via email. The class is structured so that you have to do a good amount of homework and reading but if you do those things you have plenty of practice for tests.
Dr. Sheagley is extremely caring and wants all his students to succeed. In my class we got a total of 19 extra credit points so you can pad your grade a little bit. The tests are really hard. You need to learn to problem solve to pass this class. Lectures were clear and easy to follow.
Dr. Sheagley was a great professor for general chem and made lectures interesting with live demonstrations. There were also no surprises on his exams and did a lot of practice problems in class which I found very helpful. I highly recommend taking a class from him!
Dr. Sheagley is great at making difficult chemistry topics easy to understand. Group work is done during some lectures, and many students leave during this part of the class but I found it helped me learn better once I found a good group. Exams are average difficulty, and many practice problems given. Free textbook, wonderful during office hours.
DO NOT TAKE LABS FROM THIS PROFESSOR. Class is an absolute nightmare, almost all rules are not said but you are expected to know. He says lab reports should take half hour, COMPLETELY WRONG. For a 1 credit class - reports to his standard take 5-6 hours per week just on the lab reports. Run while you can
Lectures were interesting and engaging. There were two midterms and a final which were all MC and you could have a page of notes. Easy class if you do the work. I recommend taking the workshop if you want extra examples from the lectures.
He's a great professor, and a super nice guy! His tests are straightforward and his quizzes are open notes and he gives a lot of extra credit. He's super helpful and always hosts study sessions leading up to exams.
Sheagley is very passionate about what he does and teaches. However, he messes up sometimes on his exam questions, runs through slides in order to cover whatever is needed for the exam(s), and never emails back until 3-6 days later. Chemistry is hard and it's a struggle, but he tries his best and sometimes comes off as intense and rude.
There are weekly quizzes and ALEKS which gets overwhelming because there's so much homework to get done each week including the lab report as well. It's frustrating bc there are only 2 weeks between the 1st and 2nd midterm and he crams so much material in between. He has a habit of teaching brand new material a class or two before a test as well.
So much homework, I worked for hours doing aleks homework, and it was never even helpful on exams at all. It was so difficult and I worked so hard to do well in the class and still ended up not passing anyways. This professor was not understanding or helpful AT ALL.
Best professor, extremely passionate about what he teaches, while it is a tuff subject he made it very enjoyable. He is also very understanding about your situation and is willing to work with you for almost any instance. ALEKS was very annoying but he took away knowledge checks for the last section of the term which made it a bit easier.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. I took him 3 terms of general chemistry and he was supper helpful! He also gives out Crazy amount of extra credit just by completing exam surveys. The test was manageable (kinda easy) as long as you know how to do all of the aleks topics and read over his slides.
Highly recommend Eric Sheagley's chem class #BESTprofessorever. Understand all slideshow material bc exam = slides, ALEKS homework, and quizzes. TAKE NOTES. We had 8 x 10 cheat sheet (double sided). TBH, textbook = unnecessary but if you think it'll further your understanding, go for it! Emphasize on forming connections with Dr. Sheagley.
I can tell during his lectures that he's really passionate about chemistry, and this makes it fun and easy to attend!
He is alright, but not my favourite, his taste are extremely hard and his lecture are so boring I can't focus, but comparing him to other them professors he is the best, their is 15 extra credit and alot of hws. also he is funny. if you study a lot and do your best you will get an A though.
Lectures are dense and confusing, but with a bit of reading through the textbook lectures are "easy" to understand... For homework, you will be using Aleks & for exams, you get 1 sheet (back/front) to help with exams, so only put what you DON'T know... #gotoofficehours, he is really helpful and understanding...
Is he funny and personable? Yes. Are online quizzes available for
Very difficult and if you want to be extra confused in chemistry then great. Taken before at a different university and received 98 percent. He made the material way more confusing, hard to understand, and test were trick questions.
This quarter, Professor Sheagley delivered a masterclass on how to teach. A man who truly, truly cares about his students. He went out of his way to ensure every single student had the opportunity to learn volumes about introductory chemistry. Because at the end of the day, it was clear that this was his only goal; and he achieved just that.
alot of work but he actually taught the class well and made us feel respected. group worksheets helped alot
Dr. Sheagley is awesome. He almost made me change my major to chemistry, I liked his class so much! I went from failing high school chemistry to getting straight As. You still need to put in work (don't expect an easy A), but as long as you show up ready to learn, his endless patience and understanding makes him ready to teach.
His lectures are great and you can tell he genuinely is happy to always be there. There is technically a textbook but if you do the aleks work and properly make sure to understand the slides, it's not necessary. Quizzes are short and weekly and homework is done on aleks. 10/10 would recommend!
He is one of kindest people I have ever met. He is very humble and loves the work that he does. I 100% recommend him.
Dr. Sheagley is the is the best choice for general chemistry he is super passionate about chem! The tests were difficult, but you are allowed a cheat sheet. ALEKs homework & quizzes due each Sunday. Do your best keep up with the material and make an effort to go to office hours he will help you understand the material since chemistry is very hard!
Sheagley is one of the few pre-med teachers that I had an awful experience with. He kept saying how difficult his class was and how not many people pass, as if he was proud of how difficult it was. He doesn't seem to care if you do well or want you to do well in this class. I ended up doing well, but take another professor if possible!
Dr. Sheagley is one of the best instructors I've ever had. He is intelligent, kind, and wants his students to do well. I would encourage you to attend office hours where you can ask him direct questions and really get to know his learning style. Homework is dense, but very important. Tests are hard, but he allows a cheat sheet.
Though this class was difficult for me, his ability to explain during office hours made me understand what I did a lot more thoroughly. He is extremely kind and patient: I often felt dumb for not understanding most of the ALEKS homework, but he often reminded me of how worthy I am of succeeding. Take good notes during lecture and ask questions!
Dr. Sheagley is a very kind person. He is always available and ready to help. He puts in a lot of effort into building his class and cares a lot about his students. Attend class, participate in problem solving, go to office hours and you will do well.
He has been one of my favorite professors at PSU, he gives extra credit throughout the course which really helps! I really recommend him as your proffessor!
Good at chemistry. Not good at teaching. Watching him write down equations saying "This is the answer" and then moving on gets frustrating. Being able to teach yourself the material by textbook is important, it's very frustrating after paying thousands of dollars to be there. You have to pay to do homework and to get in-class participation points.
He is amazing! He does care about you passing his class but also lets you know that you have to put in the work for it. It can be challenging but if you are top on Aleks, the quizzes, and clickers you will be okay. For the clickers you only need to answer, doesn't matter if it is wrong or right. There is a textbook but it's online and free.
A professor who really cares. The course is a fairly standard chemistry course, get ready for a lot of fees between the online software and the textbook, but he really does care and want you to succeed.
Professor Sheagley is a super kind flexible understanding teacher. He wants all his students to do well and understand the material and does whatever he can to support them. The optional reading is a good source and office hours. the material is challenging but he does his best to make it easier to understand. his kindness and understanding was key
Prof Sheagley teaches the material incredibly well. He's kind, and makes the material fun when appropriate. He surveys the class to improve his teaching each term, and it pays off. Keep on top of ALEKS, go to lecture, and in preparation for exams, do the practice problems and make a good cheat sheet (single page of printer paper).
Go to the office hours!! This is the first time i ever passed a chemistry course, not just passed but recieved an A! There are many resources provided for this class that i found helpful, its just about putting the work in and using them. Sheagley provides clear examples, problems and gives clear study guides for the exams.
My expectations weren't high for a class with 300 students but he was able to teach in an enthusiastic way that kept me and I'm sure everyone else engaged. The extra credit opportunities were very useful as I ended the term with over 100%.
does not care about students only care about a paycheck
Professor Sheagley is an amazing chemistry teacher! If you keep on top of work (Aleks, quizzes, lectures) you will do well in the class. I appreciated all the practice problems during the lecture because they helped me prepare for tests. You can tell that he is passionate about chemistry and wants everyone to succeed. A very chemicool professor!
Lecture Style: content is in textbook (reading it is greatly beneficial), covers all important points (focuses more on things people may find difficult, doesn't mean it will mostly be on tests) HW: weekly ALEKS & quiz (get above 90%? Can pass with a high B even if 2 exams are failed with full clicker points) Prof: humorous, so caring, great guy
He is extremely lazy in his teaching. Other professors offer exam review worksheets and he gives a study guide with just learning objectives from the textbook copied and pasted. He doesn't show step-by-step in all his solutions to activities, quizzes, and exams. He reads off slides and his questions are confusing to answer.
Dr.Sheagley is an incredibly kind, passionate professor. His lectures are amazing and he explains things clearly and intuitively. I recommend going to office hours as he can explain things in a more personal manner. He never makes you feel stupid and is patient with you as he helps. Its a tough course but use all the resources and you'll pass! :)
Dr. Sheagley is a very kind professor. He is extremely patient and helpful. Try to attend his office hours and ask questions. Put in the hard work, ask questions, get help and you will be successful in the course.
shitglee pos
Absolutely adore Dr Shaegley and his teaching.
When layoffs come goodbye sheagley
Sitting through a Sheagley lecture is worse than having to watch paint dry. I mean, there's a reason why his lectures are half empty and everyone shows up for test days only. On top of that, every other class he will hold an "activity day" where he will throw a thick worksheet at you to complete during lecture time. Overall, he makes chemistry SUCK
The one and only Mr. Sheagley. If anyone sees professor Sheagley teaching a class, I suggest to not sign up. He's a great person but his teaching ain't it. I'm a sophomore and he made me switch majors, and made me crash out, he getting carried by TAs!! #notmygoat
This has to be the most interesting learning experience I've had in my entire life. It felt like he was learning with us at the same time. He just went through the slides and explained it but if I'm being honest I didn't understand anything from his lectures and I just skipped them. Didn't even read the textbook, just did the homework and chatgpt
For the most part 221 is self taught. If you are self motivated and willing to put in the work outside of class to learn you should have no problem securing a good grade. I felt like I learned a lot and Dr.Sheagley was accessible for office hours when needed. Lectures are mediocre, homework is straightforward, tests are easy.
I appreciate Dr. Sheagley. He's great and funny. I wasn't a big fan of him at the beginning of the term because I couldn't understand his teaching, but I love his class now. The only homework you're expected to do is Alek, which can be a lot, but it's not bad since you're able to learn from it. I will continue taking his class cause it's fun!
If you're actually putting effort into this class I genuinely don't see how you could be struggling. Sheagley provides SO many resources to ensure that the content is being learned. I know some didn't but I really enjoyed his lectures; he goes over the content slowly and makes an effort to make chemistry fun and to make sure we learn.
He is such a amazing professor who genuinely cares for his students, he's a good teacher and a good person he encourage his students to try their best and believes in them I would 100% recommend taking whatever classes he teaches with him. He is also very understanding and kind as long as you communicate with him!
Lectures are unclear. Online homework is time intensive. Weekly online quizzes. iClickers in class to grade attendance. Every other day is an activity day in which he doesn't lecture. Flipped classroom setup just doesn't work in such an introductory course. Exams are easy. Extra credit for exam reflections and surveys. Nice guy, mediocre professor.
Labs are severely disorganized. American TAs are clueless, international TAs cannot speak English well enough to help you. Graded on a million different things. Labs barely correlate to lectures. Lab reports have a page requirement that forces you to write at length about nothing. Dreaded this lab each week. Sheagley needs to get it together.
Eric was one of my favorite professors at PSU. I took all 3 of his classes for my gen chem sequence . I'd have taken any other classes he taught as well if he had them. He makes the content digestible and cares about his students. Office Hours were a boon to understanding the content and applying it. Hands down one of the best professors PSU has.
Professor Sheagley was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He taught chemistry in the best way, and had very interesting lectures, making sure to include demos as well. His expectations are very clear, and his tests are very manageable. I am currently taking him for another gen chem course, and enjoying it as well.
it is whit tras
Very unorganized professor which impacts our learning. I never learn from his lectures and it feels like a waste of time. Although h e is a funny guy and nice. Only helpful during office hours, but when it comes to exams study guides suck, leads to failure.
when psu hires the worst of the worst and they lose their federal funding psu is getting exactly what it deserves a zero just like sheagley
Pretty good content. Nice guy, but I would recommend that those taking any of his courses do the clickers; they help boost your grade at the end of the term. Also, go in for activity days because they help a lot grasp the content. reviewing lectures is also a big help. exams are made from quiz and iclicker questions, so i'd recommend studying those
loved the class, I wish that the ALEKS program wasn't so hard to work with as all of the homework was using this program, if you don't type in exactly what it wants you to it will mark it as incorrect even if it was correct.
by far my fave professor. great for beginners in chemistry. as long as you put in work to understand, the class is passable.
Professor Sheagley is an amazing educator who truly cares about his students. He makes complex topics clear and engaging, always taking the time to help. His passion for chemistry is contagious, and encourages students to think critically. If you put in the effort, you'll learn a lot and gain a real appreciation for the subject. Highly recommend!
I enjoyed Sheagley's teaching style a lot and thought he explained concepts very clearly during lectures. There are weekly ALEKS assignments but as long as you keep up with them they are very helpful in preparing for tests. Labs are good too but it maybe depends on which TA you have.
Really good professor, study guides aren't even needed to learn the material and pass the tests, despite protests.
its impossible to fail if you just use iClicker and turn things in. ALEKS can make you go insane, but it's not completely bad. lectures are so slow- most don't show up to class unless its an exam day. the lab is.. bad. the lab & in-class TAs are so lost (except Raja). all of the exam material is in canvas online-- not hard to get an A if you try.
As someone who recently tried to turn things around, i put in WORK for an A in chem. Use all the provided material + some outside notes you can find. Take good notes to truly understand the chem language and you should be able to get that A if you try. 3 exams each term, typically every 4 weeks, 25 questions, all multiple choice. Sheagley is ok...
this dude is by far the worst employee that psu has ever hired
hes very likable, Dr sheagley definitely knows his stuff. however the lectures aren't the best. most of the learning is done through aleks online and I find myself just watching YouTube videos to get thru the homework. wish his lectures were better but his classes are fine
Most of these ratings complain about ALEKS, the labs, or the TA's, neither of which have much to do with Professor Sheagley. He manages to teach a hall of 300+ pretty well while going around to everyone and answering questions. His lectures and lecture/activity layout might not be for everybody. Still, he provides many resources to study.
General chemistry is a notoriously difficult class for many, but Dr. Sheagley has a clear goal to make sure everyone is excelling in his class and doing well. SO many resources are provided if you are struggling, in a variety of different ways as well. I took chem in highschool and struggled, but Dr. Sheagley has made this content so easy!
Dr. Sheagley did a phenomenal job finishing out the sequence. pH and redox chemistry are difficult topics, but he did a good job of revisiting it throughout the term and ensuring out understanding is solid. I will miss this class so incredibly much, Dr. Sheagley is a professor who obviously cares about his students and their learning.
This professor is not amazing; he is okay. He mainly reads off slides and does not try to make the material more understandable. He could definitely use class time better. Overall, this class is not challenging; a lot of practice is involved. I recommend watching videos on YT. The class consists of ALEKS problems, weekly quizzes, and 3 exams.
Dr. Sheagley is a likable guy but not a strong professor. Class time is poorly managed—experiments take up half the period and add little value to our learning. He mostly reads off slides with minimal explanation. The course lacks structure and depth, making it hard to stay engaged or learn effectively. You'll mainly learn by doing Aleks & videos.
This is not the type of professor that will teach you. He refuses to do practice exams for god knows what reason and finds it humorous that he's known for that. His exams are either heavy definition based or heavy math based so be prepared for both. I had to learn everything through YouTube and personal outside resources. Thanks for nothing Eric.
Sheagley is likeable and preforms experiments to explain concepts during lecture however lectures are dry, boring and poorly managed. Activities, review and study guides are lackluster to nonexistent. Easy class but not worth the tuition cost. I wish he put in more effort. Didn't even do a content review on the final lecture class of the term end.
Took Gen Chem 1–3 + labs with Dr. Sheagley. Super approachable and always willing to help. Labs are structured but encourage critical thinking. Feedback is helpful and clear. If you stay on top of the work, you'll succeed. One of the best chem instructors at PSU!
He honestly doesn't teach. He has "activity days" where all you do is a worksheet in class and "lecture days" where he mostly reads off a slideshow. Exams are all multiple choice but you never know what's on them. Your best bet is to cram a whole lot of notes on a cheat sheet (front and back) and hope for the best. He seems like a nice guy, though.
the professor doesn't provide any semblance of study guides for exams except the chapter topics, and then the exams have barely any of the stuff from those specific topics in the actual textbook. exams are overly confusing and designed for you to fail.
There was no other teacher available for this course when I needed it. The material isn't hard and he seems easy, but the way he words his exam questions is confusing. He says he cares, but he doesn't. There's no real study guide, and the tricky wording hurts you even if you know the content. If you can, avoid taking him.
I'm not a weak student, I worked hard and cared about this class. But his exams are worded very poorly, and he doesn't actually teach the material. I had to learn everything from YouTube. I'd recommend taking this course with a different professor; lectures felt like a waste of time.
I loved Sheagley! Definitely go to his office hours and get to know him, and email him if you have problems or questions. He's really nice and cares about his students. He's very on top of everything on Canvas and all materials are available online for free. Do the ALEKS homework and don't let it pile up. He loves chemistry and you can tell!
