I'm an engineering major so I found this class very boring. I stopped reading by the end of the quarter. The lectures were more of discussions and very boring. I did hw during the lectures. One 10 page paper and one 5 page draft. As long as you know how to write and choose an interesting topic you will be fine. Take home final, 2 essays.

This was my favorite class of the quarter. Prof Smoodin adds humor to a discussion class that few students actually participate in. I participated in every class and really enjoyed the topics we talked and read about. The essay was very easy and was very open-ended. I was really sad for this class to end and I hope to take another class of his.

Professor Smoodin is incredibly passionate about teaching and the topics he teaches. He knew each student by name and made an effort to connect with his class and the students. He allowed you to choose the topic you wanted for the essay and he gave meaningful feedback on the rough draft. A lot of reading, but a lot of photos and films in class.

I really did not enjoy this class. Even though i got an A, I was in the dark about my grade the whole quarter. I really thought I was getting a C. The grading criteria is so not clear and I pretty much did not learn anything from the class at all. Professor Smoodin is a great guy though but please avoid the class if you're just taking it as a GE.

Smoodin is good but the class is terrible. He's funny and really talented at encouraging discussion and building off everyone's input and making even casual comments seem insightful. But the subject is super boring, lectures are long, and you're in the dark about your grade until you see your transcript. He takes random attendance. Not recommended.

The class is very discussion based & lacks structure. Smoodin is super nice tho & if you're interested in early film history then this is the class for you. The paper isn't hard & the final is take home. Beware that everything is graded by the TAs. Attendance is basically mandatory given he calls random names for roll call & will dock points!

CTS 41a is a class on film history pre-1945, which is Smoodin's specialty. He is extremely knowledgeable about the material, and leads interesting discussions during lecture. Some of the films were kind of boring, and the grading criteria is kind of vague, but overall I would definitely recommend him for this class.

Lectures were discussion based and he was really funny. He would make lots of commentary, so it felt like you'd get cut off talking, but it wasn't intentional. He loves his students - tries to know everybody by name by second lecture. The reading is long but he gives you a lot of time. There were no tests, but the essays were graded a little harsh

He's a really funny and caring professor. Overall, this class is an easy GE that also teaches you American History you may not have know. One long-term paper, take-home final, and the occasional blog posts about the readings in class. Random attendance. Easy class if you're good at writing essays.

Class itself was not difficult. One paper you work on throughout the quarter (turn in the draft and then the final version). I think he's just excited about the subject, but it really annoyed me when he'd cut people off and not let them finish their thought. NO CLEAR RUBRIC FOR PAPERS/TAKE HOME FINAL. Always says "it's up to you". V frustrating

I don't know why everyone is being so harsh towards Professor Smoodin. After four years at Davis, he's still my favorite professor on campus. The movies he chooses are always interesting and the readings are never long. He appreciates participation in class and he's very understanding. Also, the essays weren't graded unfairly at all in my opinion.

He means well, he really does. But sometimes that isn't worth anything. Smoodin is wildly vague in his expectations, from papers to attendance. While he emphasized mandatory attendance with harsh absence penalties, he often just doesn't take roll at all. His lectures are tangential and dull, and all he ready does is spam the word "interesting".

I don't understand the negative comments towards Smoodin! Attendance is necessary and his lectures can be quite dull at times, however it's all worth it for the easy A! He is very friendly and loves input from his students and can make a simple discussion very meaningful. The Ta's are fairly chill and his expectations are vague and very broad.

Smoodin's one of the coolest guys ever. He's always enthusiastic & genuinely wants to hear what we have to say, although the class itself was SO boring. The discussion was so unnecessary but determines most of your grade. Blog posts/participation (20%), paper draft (20), final paper (20), final exam (20%). Great teacher but painfully boring subject

So take this with the context of I took his class 6-9 months into a global pandemic: He's the most caring professor I've ever had at UC Davis. He knew me by name (he knew everyone by name!). He understood the stress Covid was having and adjusted his expectations accordingly (to the point where it was almost too easy). He's great. Give him a chance.

Every class we had great discussions about the films and he did not overload us with work. Tried by best to show up to every online lecture because I enjoyed this class

His specialty seems to be silent films, so if you are not interested in that I don't suggest it. I took it thinking it would be about iconic films throughout history, but we started at the dawn of film. We did watch some cool movies, but it took a while to get to actual films. He is a cute old man who is pretty entertaining though.

The only assignments he had us do were weekly blog posts about the films we watched in class, and the final wasn't too complicated. He's been super nice and considerate during online learning.

I think Smoodin is great. He's super laid back and really cares about establishing a relationship with his students, and always asks us about our days and cares about our wellbeing. The content is interesting, it's easy to skip class, and we have a final essay that we work on all quarter thats most of our grade. I'm really enjoying this class!

Smoodin was very kind and it seems like he cares a lot about his students. However, what I wish he would change for future students is the way he grades. There is no rubric for essays which can be difficult for many people, and isn't clear on what he wants.

I almost never went to class and when I did I just did other work. Music video to start class. Super respectable. Final- 2 2 page papers. 1 term paper. I did not take any notes the whole time just used the class to relax. Watched some films. Assignments had no real instruction just "include a thesis" thats about it. Super easy but no structure
