His lectures completely prepare you for the homeworks, and the exams are multiple choice questions that are variations of the preceding homework problems. As long as you attend lectures & put a good amount of effort into the homework, you'll get A's on the exams. He's very good at explaining concepts. I got an A w/out ever attending TA periods.
Best math teacher I've ever had. He explains everything crazily understandably and offers as much help as you could need. Plus, he's nice on the eyes.
Well organized. Available for help in office hours. His thorough knowledge makes the concepts interesting and applicable. He is young and has a sense of humor, which works well for college courses. The best math professor I have ever had. He convinced me to switch my major to mathematics.
This guy's awesome. Very clear and understandable lectures and just all around great dude.
Dr. Staron is an incredible math teacher. His notes are very easy to follow and he does a great job at explaining why and how things work the way they do. Tests and homeworks were not hard at all. As stated before, Staron is a great teacher and you can do very well in this class without ever having seen sequences/series/multivariable before hand.
Very very smart and clear. Tests aren't that bad at all!
Professor Staron is incredibly awesome. Besides the fact that he is young, funny and interesting, he really knows his stuff. His examples are clear and he is happy to answer questions. He posts answers to quizzes and tests right after class, so it's really easy to study for his tests. He's extremely approachable. Very easy on the eyes.
He was super nice and really helpful in office hours. It's still a calculus class though, so its going to be hard and there's a lot of homework.
I really enjoyed Staron as a professor. In classes, I would get lost a lot, but if you go to his office hours he clears EVERYTHING up. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Exams are tough, definitely redo homework and some problems from the book to make sure you got everything covered. Go to the TA sections!! They give you hints for tests.
Dr. Staron was not only fun and entertaining during lectures, but astoundingly clear in his explanations of all of the material. At the beginning of each class, he willingly helps with homework questions, and then clearly lays out the material to be covered in the lecture. Exams aren't exactly easy, but he more than prepares you!
Nice guy, but doesn't always seem to have your best interests in mind. Although he's somewhat clear during lecture it sometimes seems like he doesn't care about your personal success and teaching is more a job to him than a passion. He'll run through examples during lecture but he goes pretty fast so keep up on the material.
Staron was honestly amazing at his job. He was extremely clear, knew how to explain things very well, and would always allow some time to ask questions about homework (btw expect a lot of it but it's necessary to pass) I think overall he does a good job at providing all the resources needed to be successful. He is also very cute and sassy.
Great professor; just a really really hard class. Hardest part is probably the grading distribution so that 90% of your grade is exams. Good guy willing to help; homework isn't bad. Expect to study a lot for exams.
Doesn't really care about the success of students in his class. Went to every discussion section, every class and took time to complete every homework and still barely passed. Makes the tests ridiculously hard and 9 times out of 10 doesn't give partial credit for problems.
Pretty terrible professor. Thinks he's funny with sarcasm too.
Staron is very enthusiastic about math, and knows what he is talking about. However, he seems to care very little about how his students are doing in the class. - A lot of first year students ended up dropping the class or struggled through the rest - I did well on homework and studied for tests, still did not do well. - Very strict grading.
Dr. Staron is a stand-up guy! He's usually pretty friendly (unless you try to prove him wrong in class, don't do that, just trust the guy... he's the one with the doctorate). He's helpful during his office hours but get there early, it's usually packed! Tests are straight from Quest so just study homeworks and you'll be fine.
Dr. Staron is an AMAZING professor. He explains things very clearly. Weekly homework. Attendance is not mandatory but if you skip any, you'll definitely receive a bad grade. The only bad part is that his tests contain a lot of questions that are not straight-forward. It's more about truly knowing the subject than remembering formulas.
Lectures were great! He is very clear and organized for all of his notes and gives examples in class for students to work through. Homework is pretty standard Quest. Tests were pretty difficult though, in my opinion. The short answer sections on the test didn't have any partial credit which I hated. Textbook is used only at your discretion.
Staron is a great lecturer with clear lectures. I was fortunate to have a good TA who supplemented his lectures with tricky practice problems. The tests make you think a lot and are comparatively hard. Not an easy A class at all. Staron is very helpful during office hours and is open to all questions.
Staron is a great professor when it comes to teaching the material; However, it is hard to make an A. There is no room for error, no leniency, and no curve even if the test average is failing. He also makes countless mistakes on exam questions and doesn't correct them until half way through the exam, costing you time. Great professor, hard exams.
Stellar, spectacular, extraordinary, fabulous, astounding, extravagant, super, wonderful, amazing, excellent, superb, suave, genius, brilliant, astute, clean, orderly, beautiful human being.
Tests were pretty easy, straight from homework or examples. Quizzes were honestly harder than tests. Couldn't really follow him sometimes but his TA was really good. He might be one of the professors you either love or hate because most people who said the class was easy tended to also go to a GE or office hours all the time.
Best math teacher/professor I've ever had! Really explains everything well and he writes what he says down as he goes and then posts the lecture notes online. Still should go to the actual class though, because things are explained better and he is great at answering questions. I would HIGHLY recommend this professor.
His lectures were extremely disorganized and he was very unhelpful in office hours. The exams themselves were not difficult but he took off tons of points and strongly prioritized computational accuracy over actually learning the material. He is ok but I STRONGLY disliked his teaching style
His class always had the highest average for midterms because he was definitely the best professor that semester.
He's kind of rude in that he doesn't really seem to care much about his students, but he's open to questions and he's super clear. Also, his tests are just like his homework so do the homework. Overall, I worked my butt off and got an A, and it is very doable for most students.
Prof. Staron is so good! He will put his lecture notes online if you miss class. If you're in class he writes the notes with you as class goes on, working all concepts and ideas out with practice problem. He's really good at explaining things and breaking them down and if you're ever confused, he's really chill in office hours. Plus he's hot too.
He is one of the few good profs in the math department. Totally recommend him. Very clear lectures. Good exams.
Great professor. Tests are't too bad, but it's mostly multiple choice so be careful not to make silly mistakes. Still a challenging course, but Staron made it really enjoyable.
I enjoyed having Staron as a professor, he's a nice guy, and his lectures went smoothly. Sometimes the tests were a bit tricky, and since they are mostly multiple choice you have to be careful. Overall, I think I learned a lot in the class.
Staron is an amazing professor. His lectures are worth going to and he provides many practice problems. Out of all the calculus professors, he is definitely one of the best.
Staron is a great teacher, the tests aren't too hard, but they are unforgiving, so be careful. You will learn s great deal with Staron
Very good lecturer, but gave insanely hard tests. The class average for one of the tests was in the 50s. He gives 4 exams with one drop and a final. One of the TAs said that he was the hardest M408D teacher and that his tests were unnecessarily hard, and I have to agree. Great lecturer, but his crazy tests make it not worth it. Dont take him!
Hardest M408D teacher at UT. good lecturer but terrible tests.
Fantastic lecturer but the tests are easy to mess up on as they are multiple choice. Take this class if you want to be more prepared for harder classes later on down the line. This class was a massive pain but it was definitely worth it.
Best math teacher I've ever had, probably the best one at UT. He definitely knows what he's doing. He teaches you a lot about mathematics. You'll have to work for your tests, and the final was pretty hard, but very manageable. You should definitely attend his lectures, but he also posts his notes online. Take this course without a doubt.
Staron's great at teaching, but he posts his notes online. Quest is due every Monday, and there are usually 20+ problems. Cut off for an A is a 93, and tests are multiple choice with 2-3 short answers. The final was pretty hard and it's worth 30%. Built-in curves in midterms and final. The max on each test was usually around 106. Class isn't easy!
Eric Staron is a legend. He is a great lecturer and amazing at math. The homework through Quest is pretty normal stuff. The exams were not very difficult, you just have to know the subject and have good algebra skills. Warning, his Final was a very hard, make sure that you study well and expect him to put some challenging questions .
Great teacher. Hard class, but that's just the class. You won't go wrong with Staron, you'll learn a lot.
Eric Staron is a nice guy, don't get me wrong. I feel like a learned a lot of good material during lectures. When it comes to tests it just seems impossible though. Out of 20 person fig, 5 people dropped his class. Go to office hours from the get go. It's so hard to try to fix everything at the end. Also his handwriting is terrible
Great teacher at teaching the material, but his tests were a time crunch. Mostly MC and some free response. Each question is worth about 8 points, so no room for error. Also gives a very hard final - that dropped my grade by a whole letter after getting A's on all the tests.
go to office hours and study or you will regret later
Don't get me wrong, this class is hard, but Staron is easily the best math professor at UT. He gives you exactly what you need to do well. The problems on the exams are the exact same steps as problems from lecture or homework, there are no curveballs. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you better go if you want to know the example test problems.
disorganized, would not upload homework quests in a timely manner, showed up to class late almost every day, said that test were no partial credit but then changed his mind after we took the first exam
He is perfect.
Staron is a great teacher, he definitely makes you work for the grade though. Homework is due monday night but sometimes he doesn't post it until later in the week which can be kind of annoying. Often he'll teach us the basics and then he goes 0 to 100 real quick and has you try to do a really hard problem where you're just like what just happened?
One of the best maths professors. Medium loads of assignment. If you do the learning exercises and assignment in time, you will get A easily.
Professor Staron is an amazing lecturer. I learned sooo much from his class. His tests might seem tough at first but the questions are very similar to quest homeworks so there aren't any surprises. He's hilariously sarcastic and really cares about math- and it definitely shows in his class. His was my favorite class and I would definitely recommend
Staron is a fantastic professor. Class was really enjoyable because he made the material very clear, and he is really funny. Workload wasn't bad-- Quests due on Monday, 4 manageable exams with one drop. I wish I could take Staron for my other math classes, 10/10.
Dr. Staron is an interesting professor. Beware of the tests which are mostly multiple choice. Work does not matter and points are only based on your final answer. This is kinda annoying for those bad at algebra so be wary.
I think he is genuinely rude. Plus his exams were all multiple choice which really just shows that he's a lazy professor since he wouldn't take the time to try to see that his students were on the right track. I learned a lot in his class, but my grade definitely didn't reflect that.
Staron was a pretty good teacher, and he explains everything clearly; however, he gives NO partial credit (or at least very VERY little). Very hard to get an A in this class. The learning modules are helpful, but not necessary. It's frustrating that students who have easier professors can easily pass 408D, but it's definitely not easy with Staron.
In lectures, he speaks and writes slowly enough for the class to process what they are learning. Highest possible score on tests is 104, but your grade is based on 100% scale, which gives you an advantage. That's his way of making up for the difficult problems on tests. Not the most friendly guy, but a great lecturer.
Staron is good at calculus and explains things clearly but goes very fast sometimes. He isn't always good at receiving questions but if it's a good one, he'll answer clearly and makes sure you understand. There's four tests, one dropped, that make up 60% of the grade. The final is 30%. One homework assignment, around 30-40 questions, every week.
Gives good lectures, drops your lowest test grade, and his tests are pretty easy and similar to the quest homework. However, the final is noticeably more difficult than any of the tests. Tests don't have partial credit except for free response, so the grading can be kind of brutal at times. Cool dude.
I think it is not that hard to get an A in his class. He has got 5 exams (including Final) and most of the questions are multiple choice question. the only annoying thing is that each question worth 8 points so if you miss one, it hits you hard. Exams are straightforward and it pretty much directly comes out of his lectures.
Great professor, lectures are informative and straightforward, consisted of going over problems, any theory taught was exemplified. Lot of homework but it pretty much mirrored what was on the test. Pretty difficult final
One of the better math professors I've had at UT, he's humorous and has a very effective teaching style, with relatively light hw and multiple choice tests.
This guy is the best math professor I have ever had. His lectures are super clear and he can make the most complicated principles seem easy by the way he explains it. His tests are only hard if you don't come to class and never do the homework. Super fair grader, I wish he taught more classes.
Staron is a great professor, his lectures are super clear and his teaching style is effective. However, his tests are really hard, and homework takes 5+ hours every week with over 30 quest problems. He is not the easiest professor, but he teaches very well.
He was honestly a great professor. His classes and tests are just what you expect them to be. Theyre never too hard or really dont have any stupid trick questions on them ever which is great! Whats not great is that they're all MC so if you mess up your Math then youll get the problem wrong. On the other hand, he does drop a test so its all good!
Staron is a wonderful lecturer. He mostly teaches through example, which is how I like to learn, and then puts all his notes online. There is a lot of online homework, which has pros and cons (answers are sometimes slightly different and no partial for work, but you are forced to do everything right in the end). Overall he's super fair and caring.
He is probably the hottest professor I've ever seen at UT. He is the best math teacher I've ever had, but to counteract that, his tests are hard af. Class averages tend to be around 70. Quest homework weekly, and there's A LOT of questions, you CANNOT do it the same day it's due.
I love Staron! He is such a good teacher and his tests are VERY fair! Although they are multiple choice, the way he explains technique in lecture and the level of difficulty of the homework well prepare you for exams.
Staron is a very unique professor who is extremely easy to follow in lecture. The ability to turn complex topics into simple ideas is rare among math professors, but Staron does this better than anyone I have had before. Easy A if you put in the work. Plus he is just a chill, cool dude. We need more Staron's.
Dr. Staron is great at explaining concepts, and his TA is too. 4 tests+final+total homework are the only grades, he drops one test. The test questions are straight forward and usually reflect the Quest homework and lecture examples (some are even straight from the homework). A if you're willing to work; also he grades tests out of 105!
hes really good at explaining things and even though attendance isnt mandatory going to class is really helpful. you can do learning modules online but its not as easy to understand the material
Staron explains and simplifies concepts very well. The class has homework due every week, which can sometimes be very long, has 4 exams that are multiple choice and each with a chance for extra credit. Overall, the class wasn't unbearable with other engineering classes, definitely recommend Staron.
If you have the option to take professor Staron, take him. M 408D is a tough class, and he does a good job of introducing concepts clearly while forcing you to do practice problems in class. There are 4 multiple choice midterms (the answer is never "None"!), and he drops the lowest. Discussion sessions are super helpful. Final had a 8 point curve.
The 4 tests and final make up most of the grade one test gets dropped. Posts notes online so not as necessary to attend class.
A great lecturer. Actually has you do math in class, which prepares you for the test. I was failing the class for a while, but after working harder and the test drop I ended with a B. The homework and the discussion sheets are great study material.
His lectures are engaging and very useful. The homework can get a little excessive but if you start early it isn't bad. The exams are somewhat difficult, but you can get an A if you work hard. For anyone considering taking this class to finish their calculus credit (specifically science majors), it's probably best to just take M408M instead.
Staron was great at breaking down topics and had a good sense of humor. The online learning modules before class didn't always help but were extra credit anyway so were worth doing. Only drawbacks were that tests were all multiple choice, so no partial credit, and the class could seem fast-paced, but that was more a product of the course than him.
Daddy Staron was a great professor. His tests are all MC and they're rough, but if you go to class and do the CW, HW and LMs you'll be good. The final was specifically brutal as it took me 2.5 hours, but I came out with a 96 on it because Staron prepares you so well. The class is challenging, but very fair as the questions are very straight up
This class is a lot of work. You will be spending a lot of time on HW. As for Prof Staron himself I'm pretty sure he's 1 of the best calc professors you'll get. He definitely knows his stuff. He goes pretty fast when working through examples though. He's kinda a mix when it comes to asking questions, he's sometimes approachable and sometimes not.
Such a great professor! I really cant imagine anyone better, I loved him! His lectures are definitely the best part of the class, I always left feeling very prepared. HW can be long, but its very helpful, and since you get a week to do it, its really not that bad. A good grade is very attainable if you come to lectures, do the hw, and study.
the BEST math professor!! If I could take every math class with Staron I would. His class is not the easiest but he prepares you well and never has any surprises on his tests (Except maybe the final -that test was HARD)
I really took Staron for granted my first semester at UT. His lectures are easy to follow and he has a sense of humor. Tests are almost identical to the quest assignments. The final was much harder than the midterms though. The class moves fast and there's a lot of material, so take quest HW seriously and practice a lot.
408D was very difficult but Staron made it doable. His lectures are great and he's always willing to answer any questions that people may have during class. Discussions for the class are helpful and he uploads his notes to his website. Definitely enjoyed the professor, just not the class. Would take again.
I love this man. His lectures are easy to follow and he posts his notes online. The homeworks are long but they are great practice. Discussion is not mandatory but the TA goes over homework problems and gives great reviews before the exam. Practice old exams and make sure you stay on top of the material and you'll be golden.
Take Professor Staron if you can! He posts notes online, but go to lecture because he does great explanations. Always do practice exams and go over quest homeworks because those will prepare you for the test. He drops one exam which is nice. The extra credit HW is okay, you honestly don't need to do them, just a few. Final is hard, but okay.
Dr. Staron is seriously a great guy. His lectures are slightly old school in that he just writes on paper, but he makes up for it with remarkably concise explanations whenever you ask a question. Flexible to meet your needs, always exudes positive energy, and doesn't grade unnecessarily harshly when he can tell people struggle. Take him if possible
Staron talks quietly so sit somewhere in the front. He explains things well. I only had to use the textbook a few times because you can understand the concepts during lectures. 4 exams and LOTS of homework (I had 15). He replaces your lowest exam grade with your final exam grade if it helps your grade go up. Go to your discussions because it helps!
One of my favorite math profs. His lectures are very well organized, easy to follow, and I enjoyed attending them. HW answers are in back of book, so you can keep trying until you get the right answer. By doing that, it makes studying for tests less of a hassle bc you already have all the solns worked out. For tests, study hw probs & in-class ex's.
Staron is a great professor. The lectures are very clear, and homework is weekly but only 10 percent of the grade. The tests aren't bad if you understand the material well, and the final can replace the lowest test grade. If you have to miss a lecture, he follows the book well but the tests are a lot like the problems he works through in lecture.
Amazing lecturer who really knows his stuff. He's great at explaining and cares that his students understand the content
Alright let me give it to your straight. This class took a LOT of work for me. His multiple choice tests anticipate errors. Add instead of subtract? BOOM! minus 7 points. I got a B and a C on the first two tests but I worked my butt off to learn how to take the test and got an A. This class is bare bones grade wise so do hw and STUDY FOR TESTS!
This is Staron's first year teaching 427J in a while so his class is fairly new, but very organized and he has everything planned. Offers a lot of extra credit that I had a 103 for a while in the class. His lectures are fun because he's hilarious. I definitely think he's one of the easier 427J teachers, so take him if u can!!
Dr. Staron has a real gift for making complex calculus ideas quite simple and visual. His lectures can be a bit boring, but he makes a point of ensuring students have ample practice before the exams and lots of room for feedback/questions. Super easy class if you just do the homework.
Staron is extremely clear in his lectures, and makes everything, even the most abstract concepts, easy to understand. There's lots of homework (easy to understand), so lots of practice, and there are also optional learning modules for more practice. There's 4 tests that make up the class, 1 of them gets dropped for the final, which is pretty cool.
Professor Staron's lectures are easy to follow with a variety of colored markers. He takes his time explaining concepts and answers all questions effectively. He's pretty funny which makes the class more engaging. His TA Kris and the discussion section are super helpful because she just works out homework questions. I definitely recommend him.
Staron is an amazing professor for calculus. I am a business major and hate math, but really really enjoyed his class. He makes complex topics very easy to understand. The class is difficult but him and the TA are extremely accessible and will answer any question you have. If youre not a STEM major and need to take this class take Staron!
impossible class
Took Staron for 408D and 408C. Great prof, explains concepts really well and has a sense of humor once he gets to know the class. HIGHLY recommend reading through the textbook before each lecture, because it's very easy to fall behind. The tests are fair (MC) if you know what you're doing. He's also in a Tiff's Treat's commercial lol. Solid choice.
Amazing professor for this class. He understands his audience and knows we don't care much about theory. There was never anything on a test he didn't cover in class or was on the homework, but this also means you should make sure you understand his notes and can do the homework. If you do both, you will more than likely receive an A in the class.
Very clear and precise lectures over topics! Livens notes up by using colored markers. Staron emphasizes on practicing. As long as you actually do the homework and optional Learning Modules (extra credit), you should be prepared for every test. If you bomb a test, the final test's grade will replace that grade! All tests are multiple choice.
Gives you plenty of resources to succeed, it's very much up to you if you use them or not. My grade was a result of not studying for tests enough-- they are tricky and have no partial credit. HW isn't difficult and TA offers lots of help. Overall a great professor with pretty good lectures. Redo HW and do textbook practice problems to study.
Solid teacher. Understands the student perspective.
He gives multiple choice math tests. He made calculus 2 so hard for me I was considering switching majors. He is not helpful at all, if you go to his office hours he might just be rude to you. He doesnt care about his students. I had a hard time in his class and he was never once helpful about it. He stood me up for office hours twice. Never again
Staron is an amazing professor. If you pay attention in class and do the homework, you will do just fine. He explains everything very well and going to class is actually worth it as he gives some time for you to do examples instead of just giving a concept.
So now I have officially taken Dr. Staron for both M 408C and M 408D. I loved having him. He knows how to teach and has a dry wit that makes him a fun teacher. In both 408C and 408D I got A's overall, but in both of them I had test scores that I was not happy about. Just study hard and talk to the TA and you got this!
Loved his lecture style. He was easy to follow, notes were incredibly clear. The tests however do not reflect student learning at all. They are completely multiple choice and true/false and the choices include premeditated errors. Do the calc right but add wrong? no credit. Tips; practice solving problems FAST and pay attention to every detail.
Prof. Staron has the amazing ability to cognitively empathize with beginners while simultaneously retaining a profound understanding of the subject. His lectures are deliberate and easy to follow. One of the best math teachers I've ever had. If you did well in high school Calculus, this class will be a breeze.
I love Dr. Staron! I had him for both 408C and 408D but I didn't leave him a review for the former. Probably had the dryest humor out of all instructors I've ever had at any level, but I loved it. He was super accessible during office hours (usually just one-on-one because people didn't go) and he's pretty organized with topics and content.
Great professor, but the class is difficult. M408D jams in essentially calc 2 and 3 into one course, with a bit of diffeq in there to spice it up. This means that unless you are a genius at math, you WILL have to work hard and practice. Exams are a bit long, ensure you can solve things fast and you will do fine. Don't fall behind, class moves fast.
Love Dr Staron and his particular sense of humor. I had him for M408C and 408D and he is one of the best math professors I have ever had. Tests can be hard if you don't do a lot of practice problems, all of them are multiple choice with true and false for the last 3 questions. Go to discussion sections, the TA is super helpful.
It is definitely a hard class, but professor Staron is great. Attendance is not mandatory but I would never miss a single class. The TA is really helpful. The homework can be a lot of work, I would suggest doing some problems of it everyday instead of doing all of them the day before it's due bc the problems get harder towards the end .
i failed 408D the first time I took it with shirley. my gpa was tanked and i was hopeless after my first semester at ut. staron made me love math again. i actually left class understanding things for the first time in what felt like forever. 10/10 would recommend. tests are so easy as well
Incredible at teaching.
Soild Choice for M408C. Weekly homework is the most tedious part of this class, usually taking me around 1-2 hours. Tests are not difficult if you study the homework and look over how each problem is worked out. Great professor
For the love of all that is good and holy, please take Dr. Staron for 408D. He is a fantastic teacher and makes super hard math really easy to understand. The exams weren't bad at all, you should easily be able to do well on them if you go to class. He did a wonderful job of converting the class to a virtual format when UT shut down in Spring 2020.
Look- I HATE calculus but I really liked Dr. Staron. He teaches in a very linear and easy to understand way, beginning with the basics and progressively getting more complex. You technically don't have to show up to lecture or discussion (at least when it's online) and all lectures are recorded. If you can do the homework, you can do the tests.
Having taken Calculus AB at the high school level, I came into this class with a decent understanding of integral and differential calculus. Putting aside my prior knowledge, I can say Dr. Staron is an excellent choice for calculus at UT. Reviewing the Quest HW prior to taking test is a surefire way to earn an A. Test heavy, so be sure to prepare.
Prof. Staron was an amazing lecturer; explains well. The course was graded only on tests and homework. There was a lot of homework, but it made sure you were ready for the test. Exams were given via quest. You can do review assignments on quest, which help a ton for preparing for exams. Attend the lectures, do the homework, and you should be good.
Had him for this course and differential equations. He makes math fun and easy. Besides a couple of typos on the 2nd exam (which he made up for), he did everything great. A solid choice.
Calculus is a pretty difficult class, but Staron makes everything so easy to understand, plus he exempts you from the final if you ace all 4 midterms. There are weekly 20-30 question homework assignments which can be sort of tedious, but they are much more difficult than the midterms and prepare you very well for them.
Compared to my Calculus teacher in high school, Dr. Staron was better by a long-shot. Probably one of my favorite professors during the semester I had him. His assignments are super easy if you attend the lectures and office hours. Exams are fairly easy if you do your homework and practice as much as you can.
Great lecturer. Amazing at explaining math concepts, especially at the beginning. Towards the end, the work gets much more difficult, but he does a pretty good job teaching. Quizzes are pretty easy if you do the HW. Exams are much more difficult and are graded much more harshly. A majority of your grade depends on the exams, so practice a lot!
He's just a real sweetheart. I took this class online so I may not have as clear a picture of him as other students, but he made difficult diff eq/lin alg concepts quite easy to understand. He also was fairly lenient on grading at times.
Amazing professor who makes a difficult subject like Calculus easy to follow and straightforward. Lots and lots of homework. Grade depends on mostly exams but exams are exactly like homework problems. If you do homework, you will be prepared for exams, which are always fair. Awesome professor allows final to be optional if you have B+. Awesome guy.
He explained everything very well and his office hours are helpful too. But I felt like his exams were lengthier than it should be.
Dr. Staron is a very passionate and caring teacher. You will excel with minimal effort if you have prior calc experience; otherwise you'll have to work more, but he makes it easy to do well. Tests are weighted heavily (70%), but he creates extra credit if needed. Very original lectures. He will help you if you reach out to him. Get him if you can!
Great professor. He was a little scary and intimidating at first, but eventually you get used to his expectations. Lectures and textbook homeworks are very important to do well on exams. Exams are fair. He doesn't throw any crazy curveballs at you, and we could get up to a 110 on most exams. Definitely wouldn't mind having him for M408D.
Dr. Staron is a great professor who is clearly knowledgeable about the subject. This class is fast-paced and fairly difficult even if you have prior calculus experience, so attend office hours and don't hesitate to reach out for help if you need it. He will prepare you well for 408D. If you get an A on all 4 exams, you don't have to take the final.
I had no prior experience in Calculus before this class but he made understanding complex concepts pretty simple and straightforward. I definitely learned a lot, although test heavy, he offers ample of extra credit on each tests. The good thing is if you score well on all 4 exams, you can skip the final :)
He's a really fair and just professor. Is hw heavy, but they really solidify the concepts. His tests can be challenging so really prepare for those; questions are the most complicated version of ones in class. Having had no prior calc experience, the beginning was difficult but it got easier from there. attending class is a REALLY good idea.
Dr. Staron takes the extra time to explain the "why" instead of just "how", which I absolutely love. Class is test-heavy but he will go through the same type of problems during class, and the amount of extra credits he offers is insane. Definitely made me better at calculus and love it more. Will take again!
Professor Staron is great! spends lectures going over problems that are similar to quest questions and textbook homework questions. We had 1 quest assignment and one textbook assignment per week--they are pretty easy questions. Tests are about 5-8 questions with lots of partial credit. Tests are hard, but all questions are done in lecture.
People rate him good b/c he is better than some other professors but that is inaccurate. He speeds through all topics in a single class and does not explain them well. He also does not grade the homework so you cannot assess what you need to practice for the test. Plus his tests are unnecessarily hard and lectures only partially prepare you.
He was a decent professor thanks to the teaching videos. I would highly recommend having a background in calculus before taking this class. His course was very test heavy and this was a very big adjustment for me at least. One type of weekly homework were confusing and conceptual (very time consuming). If you take, be ready to work for your grade.
Such an amazing professor. Probably is the most organized and tech-savvy (probably because of how young he is) which made his online class super easy to navigate. Class wasn't easy but average effort would guarantee you an A. He teaches very well and pulls no tricks on exams. Follow lectures and home-works and you're set!
He has short pre-lecture videos to teach concepts, and classtime itself is devoted to practice problems. It's a pretty nice arrangement; his videos are super easy to follow, and the examples he solves in class are pretty reflective of what shows up on the assignments. The workload is just about right, and he's a super nice guy.
He's an ok teacher and had slow-paced lectures, where questions were not usually answered. I previously took AP calc BC but tests were extremely difficult, pulling questions that were rarely seen and confusing. Even my TA told my class Staron was mean for what he put on tests. He's unforgiving and doesn't care when you ask for help,gl on the final
his lectures were super helpful, but he focuses a lot on concepts instead of application. tests were very similar to what we did in class, and there was extra credit on every test. tests had 120 points, but graded out of 100, so you can miss points and still score well.
Exams tend to be the hardest thing in this class, but textbook questions can be rough too, we had help hours and those helped so take advantage of that if you can. For us, the hardest exam questions were typically pulled straight from lectures, so I'd recommend rewatching them before exams to prepare. If you took AP Calc AB you should be ok.
If you took AP Calc AB in high school and understood it reasonably well, I could not recommend Staron more. Kind of a lot of HW but very easy problems. Tests had 25 'bonus' points so you could miss an entire problem and still get a 100 on the exam. Problems on tests were straight from the lecture.
Dr. Staron's lectures are really straightforward and tests are very manageable with some studying. Definitely go to lecture and take notes, catching up is a lot of effort. Homeworks aren't mandatory, but help significantly for exams, but easy weekly quizzes are good to keep you up to date on course material. I definitely recommend his class.
CHARACTER: This is a good, compassionate professor, all around. He was very understanding of my personal circumstances and specifically went out of his way to help me. CONTENT: Not that hard of a class if you're a math person. AP Calculus will not make this 'easy'. Homework is brutal, find a study group! Tests have lots of extra points availabl
Linear Algebra is hard, but Dr. Staron makes it incredibly easy and straightforward. He posts pre-lecture videos introducing you to the concept, allowing you to focus on solving problems in class rather than try to understand the concepts for the first time. Tests make up most of the grade but are exactly like class examples so be sure to practice.
This class can get a little overwhelming at times but it is definitely manageable if you put some effort into it. He does a lot of examples (types of questions you'll see on exams) in lectures so you don't want to skip them. Practice a lot! Grading criteria are listed very clearly on the syllabus but he might change them later on... in a good way!
No graded homework but weekly quizzes over hw. Attendance not required but you want to go. He's funny and very intelligent, makes learning the material fun. Linear Algebra was difficult but he helps you through it. Watch the pre-lecture videos, do the hw, go to class, and you will succeed. He also exempts students from the final if they have a B+.
I probably would have had a tough time in his class if I did not take calculus in high school. With that said, while tests may challenging, they are not anything you have not seen in class. You do not have to show up to class, but you should.
Excellent instructor! His lectures were straightforward and easy to understand. He provided short videos of each topic beforehand which he would go over in class and elaborate with examples. The weekly quizzes were no harder than the material covered in class and the exam content was almost exactly what was on the quizzes and in the lectures.
He taught the difficult course material so well that this class was easier than calculus for me. Go to lectures and do all of the practice problems. Tests were very straightforward and he didn't try to trick you.
He is an awesome professor. I loved the way he built suspense and introduced new topics. He worked through every single type of problem in class. I loved the fact that HW was not required and we had an option to skip the finals. The exams were a bit lengthy and covered almost all topics so I recommend reviewing everything before the exams.
Compared to shriver, this guy was amazing. Helps you to do well and understand the concepts. Very clear notes and outlines to help review. The only downside is a ton of homework, but in math that extra help really helped me do well on tests. He should be first choice if you are able.
Great math professor. Take the time to watch his pre-lecture videos, they're short and sweet and really helpful. Doesn't require you to take the final if your grade is >79.5%. His lectures can be pretty funny, and his exams are never anything you didn't go over in class.
Lectures explained concepts very well. Homework was difficult but great practice for exam. Set aside 5-6 hrs to do each hw. To succeed: redo all problems in pdf's of pre lectures, hw's, & create a formula sheet before each exam. Memorize formulas & do as many example problems as you can. Straight-forward exams. Not much AP cal knowledge needed.
The course was structured where there were pre-recorded lectures to watch before class and the entire lecture time was structured to work through problems together. It helped to attempt hw problems before class because he would work through problems you had questions. Tests were challenging so thoroughly redoing hw problems before them is a must.
Took his Summer 408C course, which was more condensed than the normal course. The pace was extremely fast but Professor Staron still did a great job of breaking everything down in a way which was easy to understand. Homework was heavy and time consuming, but prepared you well for the exams. The exams were difficult but fair. Great lectures as well.
Great lectures; do not even need to read textbook. Really easy exams with lots of extra credit questions.
he's an okay teacher. likes to make math super philosophical, which is annoying like we're in a numbers class not liberal arts. he's super passive aggressive. wouldn't take again.
Reviews saying Ryan Reynolds are true. I'll sleep through a class like nobody's business, but his sarcasm made it fun for me. He cares about our grasp of the math, replies to emails quickly and before class uploads videos so you are prepared. The only thing is we would have assignments that had hard questions he made that the TA would not go over.
Probably the best Math teacher I've had, ever. Framed calculus in such a way that made it really interesting. I also loved his teaching style(he does a mini-lecture online video, and then all of the class is just doing really hard example problems.) Great life advice too, inspirational guy in general.
omg he slays so hard. He's is so clear in explaining everything you need to do, and he works so many examples in class and in the recorded videos that there are no surprises on the quizzes or tests. Take him is you can!!
I took calc in high school and was prepared to deal with actual college calculus but Professor Staron explains the topics pretty well and the homework is not hard, and occasionally he gives extra credit for the homework. The final replaces your lowest test grade which is really helpful. Overall a really good professor.
Dr. Staron is excellent. He provides quick videos to watch before class to get foundational knowledge, and then class time is spent working through tough examples. The homework and tests are not hard if you pay good attention. Plus, there are lots of extra credit opportunities. He's very knowledgeable and also nice and funny. Definitely take him!
Dr. Staron is genuinely the best math teacher i've ever had. he helps u understand calc as a subject instead of just teaching u how to go through the motions. there are never any surprises on his exams as the problems are all similar to the hw and class problems. u can skip his final if u get an A on every exam so def put in the effort for those
Dr. Staron is genuinely the best math teacher i've ever had. he helps u understand calc as a subject instead of just teaching u how to go through the motions. there are never any surprises on his exams as the problems are all similar to the hw and class problems. u can skip his final if u get an A on every exam so definitely prioritize those
For Dr. Staron's class, you don't need to go to the lectures because he records all of them and posts them to canvas. I think the pace he goes at in lecture is good to ensure you understand the content. Its mainly homework and tests that make up your grade, and you don't have to take the final if you get all A's on the midterm.
Great professor. One of the best options for freshmen. Honestly don't have any complaints about him.
Dr.Staron was a really good calculus teacher. Coming in with previous Calc 1 knowledge it was a really easy class and it was more of a refresher for me. The class is mostly homework and tests, the lectures are easy to follow and he will always answer any question. He will not deviate from the syllabus so make sure to read all of it.
Great teacher with many extra credit opportunities, but if there's an error make sure to bring it up asap. I had a test graded wrong and brought it up later but it was never corrected. Ended up with a B+ because of this, but don't take this as a negative to his excellent teaching. He gives many extra credit opportunities on exams, and is great.
He is an amazing professor. There are a few midterms; if you get an A on all of them, you get an A in the class and don't have to take the final. weekly txtbk & quest hw. His midterms are what he says are on it. When studying for tests look over the quest, textbook hw, and in-class examples. His tests are majority mcq with 2-3 frq.
Staron is amazing and his class is complete. You have every resource you could think of. He provides short pre-lecture videos covering the subject, which were super helpful. In class, he goes through the subject with more depth and does a range of problems. He communicates his expectations very clearly, is kind, and teaches calculus phenomenally.
His exams and free response assignments almost always had extra credit. He is good at teaching, but a lot of the time he goes into why something is first and then going into the method, which is something I personally didn't like because I just wanted to know how to solve it. But if you want to know why something is done, he'll be perfect for you!
Dr. Staron is one of the best math professors I've taken at UT. He used a flipped classroom approach, reserving lecture time for example problems and help with HW. He was a little bit of a tough grader, but he tried to make sure everyone was on the same page before proceeding on. Make sure to redo HW and lecture problems to do well on exams!
Initially, I decided not to review Professor Staron due to his high score on RateMyProfessors, but I decided to write a review for his excellence. I took M408C and always asked him if he would teach M408D. The "u-sub" joke he made in class is unforgettable. Trust this random, but honest, stranger: with proper work you can easily get an A.
Generally came off as passive aggressive and condescending, and offered unnecessary extra credit instead of just making exams more reasonable. If you're not a great test-taker, I would avoid this class like it's the plague.
The open-note quizzes and in-class exams are easy and closely related to the lecture. If you do well during the semester, there will be no final and you will get A. A lot of people will get that.
I don't like him. He's a tough grader and the exams together worth 70% of the grade. No drops, no reviews before the exam.
Prof. Staron is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. The flipped classroom format made lectures feel a lot easier to understand. He explains difficult concepts so anyone can understand them. Two exams and easy weekly take-home quizzes. If you get a 93 on both exams and a 90 on 10 quizzes, you'll be exempt from the final with an A. Fantastic
Great lectures, easy to follow, assignments are consistent, short, and easy to complete. One of the best math professors/teachers I've ever had.
The class is relatively easy as long as you watch the modules and/or attend class. Weekly quizzes are online, tests are pretty straightforward. He teaches the material well.
The two midterms are easy, and I got both above 93 so I do not need to take the final exam. There are only 1-3 questions on every-week homework quiz, easy to get the full score. He also gives a great lecture, and is even easier than 408D. Some people say he is a hard grader. Actually, he has corrected many misgrading soon after that.
Beautiful, fantastic, amazing... Dr. Staron makes math fun and genuinely cares about the class. He'll make you work to get an A, but I learned a lot. 10/10 would recommend to a friend
I did not enjoy his class. He was very unhelpful when it came to asking for help. He does not prepare you nearly enough for his exams and does not post any practice problems. Out of all of my math classes here at UT he was 100% the worst I have had and my 408D teacher did not even fully speak english.
Prof. Staron is an okay professor. My biggest qualm with him is that he is unreachable outside of class, and his TA took forever to respond to emails. He grades hard (very little partial credit), doesn't post solutions to anything but the quizzes, and you're exams are worth a lot. However, his lectures (the ones I'd go to) were structured well.
Prof Staron is a good choice for this class if you really want to learn the material. He is quite fair, and if you do well on the midterms you can be exempt from the final. Watch his pre-lecture videos and do a bunch of examples and you'll succeed in the class!
Lectures were pretty good I thought he did a good job at teaching the content. The class is pretty test heavy so you need to study pretty well for them. You can also exempt from the final if you do good enough on the midterms, so make sure you do good on those. Sometimes the content got a little challenging, but overall wasn't too bad.
He taught 427J like it was a story. His lectures intentionally end leading up to the next one and he is very very clear in how he grades, what he wants, and his lectures are very clear and thorough. Just show up to every lecture you cannot not get an A.
I barely scraped the A I got in this class. The entire grade is essentially just 2 tests and the final (less than 10% for the quizzes). He added a lot of extra credit to the first test and then significantly less to the second and final, which messed up a lot of students' grades. He lectured well, but the tests were still killer.
I LOVED Dr. Staron! His lectures were clear and really helped. However, if you miss one class, you must watch the lecture. Take notes on the lectures in order to do well. His exams were similar to quizzes and problems done in class!
A gifted teacher who is able to communicate complex topics in a very simple and understandable manner. Would highly recommend.
Best math professor I've had at UT. Lectures were informative, well-paced, and actually taught us how to master the concepts. Tests were extremely reasonable and problems looked a lot like the homework. Exams were graded out of more than 100 points, so you aren't penalized for missing one or two questions. Take Dr. Staron if you can.
Best professor I've had at UT so far. Watch the videos, go to class, understand the homework, and you'll get a good grade, simple as that.
Staron is one of the best professors at UT, thanks to his humor and solid lecturing. I recommend taking him even more than Prof. Meth.
I would highly recommend taking this class if you already took calculus, if not then you have to put in more work. There was a good amount of homework but you'll get used to it. He goes a bit fast during lecture so watching his pre-class videos helped. Extra credit was offered on homework and tests. He was also unironically funny sometimes.
Quest and textbook homework every week, some are heavier/harder than others but always doable. The lectures are funny, but it's easy to get lost if you skip a class. Midterms/final are 85% of grade, so its important to do well on them. He offers fun extra credit activities on some of the homework assignments, and overall a very good professor.
I do not recommend Dr. Staron to anyone who is not a good test-taker or anyone who doesn't have a solid calculus background since his tests are 75% of your grade plus a 10% final and you don't get a drop. Dr. Staron is a good professor but the high-pressure tests made the class difficult.
Dr. Staron is one of the best math lectures I've ever had. He is very clear with his expectations and always takes pauses in between problems to answer anyone's questions. I would not recommend his class to anyone not good at taking tests, since they make up 85% of your final grade. Homework assignments can be long but will prepare you for exams.
He's a good teacher & lectures are helpful. Biggest issue is the tests are difficult & your grade is very test heavy. Studying well is hard because we cover so much, but it's not impossible to do well. 2 hw assignments a week (1 long, 1 hard). Extra credit on hw. His office hours are on zoom, and not helpful. But TA Kris was the best!!
Tests are 85% of your grade (3 tests, 1 final), it's important to either have a solid calculus foundation or attend discussion sections with the TA regularly. Two homeworks each week, one is generally long and the other can be hard but there's extra credit which can help boost your grade. Tests are also "curved".
Professor Staron is a great lecturer and posts videos on Canvas for reference. His class is test-heavy (75%) and they only got harder as the semester progressed. We had 2 HWs per week and there was extra credit on them which was very helpful. Be ready to study well for his exams!
Homework was a bit excessive in my opinion. Some weeks we'd have close to 50 problems of homework and then the most obscure questions of those would wind up on the test. Felt like there were too many problems to be able to anticipate all of them for tests. Was otherwise fine
Textbook + quest homework each week. Extra credit for textbook hw. First 2 tests were fair + reflective, 3rd test was insane- he messed it up & admitted it was unintentionally rly hard class average fell by 20. A really great lecturer very engaging, lots of practice problems to do well. Final was also hard. Great guy, mixed feelings towards the end
He is not caring and is unwilling to compromise. You will spend a large amount of time doing homework; sometimes a 40 question homework on quest and another 8 question homework on canvas. Tests are a huge amount of your grade and not at all representative of lecture material. A lot of the content you will teach yourself. Wouldn't recommend.
My favorite professor so far. Great lectures, the online video lectures to supplement were very helpful. Would recommend to anyone.
Test problems were based off homework's. There were only a few problems on the tests that weren't seen before on the notes/HW. Hard class but easy to get an A if you show up and do the work. Makes his expectations clear during lecture. Extra credit on tests and textbook homework. Highly recommend to anyone willing to ask questions and do the HW.
Dr. Staron is an amazing lecturer who takes the time to show you the nuance in certain mathematical concepts. In addition, he clearly laid out class expectations to avoid confusion. While his tests can be difficult, they are fair and reflect the homework material. If you want a professor who will make you think critically, take Dr. Staron!
Do not take Staron unless you have prior calculus experience. He is very test heavy with most of your grade being based on 3 exams. He sometimes came off as passive and not very helpful if you were to ask questions. Expect to do a lot of Quest assignments with around 20-35 questions a week. Weekly TB assignments were usually easier.
Grade mostly comes from the exams (with the final being either optional or replacing lowest exam grade). Would not recommend him without having taken a calculus course before since his lectures consisted mostly of practice problems with explanations and tests covered a large variety of topics.
He's a great teacher if you already have a Calculus background. If you don't, you will struggle. The tests are pretty difficult. The first couple were easy, but the last test and the final were awful. Make sure you understand every concept and go to every discussion section if the TA knows what they're doing.
Staron is great at explaining calculus topics, but I definitely recommend having a calc background. The class consisted of two hws a week and three tests through the sem. The class is very test heavy, but most of the questions on the tests were from hws with some exceptions. Hws have extra credit oppertunities. I left prepared for M408D.
The TA would teach differently then the lectures. Very difficult exams. The professor was passive aggressive. I even took calc in high school and still didn't do great in this class. The flipped learning was not for me. He is a good professor to take if you have a STRONG calc background.
Took me by surprise because I did well in AP Calculus. The "flipped classroom" method did not work for me and almost resulted in me failing the class. Grade is mostly based off 3 difficult exams. Lots of homework. Attendance isn't required, but you will not do well if you don't go. Staron is passive aggressive and not helpful if you're confused.
Won't respond to emails. Practice/quiz problems offered by Dr. Staron do NOT reflect what is on the exam material and are instead based on material vaguely reviewed in lectures, in addition to an infuriating 1-2 trick questions on each exam. Was recommended by former classmates and friends and am HEAVILY disappointed. Avoid if you can.
The differential equations class is well-structured and he provides pre-class videos and notes for you to review before lecture. Dr. Staron doesn't collect any homework, but assigns ungraded practice problems to help you prepare for the weekly quizzes. The only grades in the course come from two midterms, weekly quizzes, and the final.
Lectures in a way that's clear and makes sense. The video lessons definitely helped a lot
Dr. Staron's class was well structured and easy to follow. Do the prelecture videos as he goes quickly in lecture and lectures can serve as a review, which is needed as the exams are hard. Weekly quizzes, and if you score well on both midterms youre exempt from the final. Overall hes a good teacher and I felt like Iearned alot. Would recommend.
Staron has amazing lectures and is very organized. But his class is NOT easy. You can skip the final if you get >95 on both exams but his exams are hard. On the second exam most people couldn't finish or barely finished. Understand the content but you also need to have good speed and accuracy. Just do every single problem from the notes and hw.
highly recommend pre-lecture videos and hw/discussions if you want to do well. the class and concepts are not too difficult, but you will definitely feel pressured for time during tests. however he does provide bonus questions and the chance to exempt the final if you score well. grade based on weekly quizzes (online), two midterms, and the final.
Staron is a great lecturer who can actually explain complicated concepts very simply. I was worried about taking his course but he made it easy. Tests are doable and the weekly quiz was good review. If you do well enough on the first two exams and on all quizzes you get exempt from the final!
One of the most unfulfilling mathematical courses I've ever taken at UT with the most brutal exams. Avoid if you desire a high GPA. Workload isn't bad but will not prepare you at all for the tests which are roughly 85% of the grade.
This class is very difficult in that the take home quizzes, which only consist of 15% of your grade, are much simpler than the actual exams. There are two midterms, which are in total worth 70% of your grade. The midterms are astronomically harder than the material you are given to prepare for it.
He's a great lecturer and knows his stuff. however, his exams are extremely difficult and the resources he gives us to prepare for his exams are not sufficient. he also made the second exam way too difficult because it was so long and nobody could finish. his office hours were also very unhelpful because they were on zoom.
Dr. Staron reminded me of why math is enjoyable. His lectures are great; they're well-structured, steadily paced, and very enjoyable. His weekly quizzes should be free 100s but don't impact your grade too much. All the test questions are examples from class, so pay attention and review the notes and you'll do fine. If you don't get Meth, take him.
Staron taught the material in a way that was extremely digestible. Weekly quizzes open for 24hrs that are similar to lecture/textbook problems. No graded homework but make sure you understand the content. Tests were pretty challenging, not impossible. Final is manageable if you prepare for it well. Do not fall behind, not even by one lecture.
He is a good lecturer, but he has two midterms worth 70%. Idk what all these people are on but I went to class and studied outside of it, but got a 69 final score at the end which he did not curve, so I will have to take it again
Staron presented the material in a good way that is definitely feasible. The first exam was a breeze, but the second exam he made it impossible for many to finish within the time give. He realized his mistake and offered a 27-point curve lol. Final exam was much easier, and this course is doable even if you just memorize the methods to solve.
Homework was on quest, lectures were very helpful. Pace was easy to keep up with. Exams were fair so as long as you can solve the HW problems you'll be fine. Cool guy, would definitely recommend taking any class with him.
Lectures are very organized and easy to follow. If you want to dive deeper into the fundamental math behind the topics presented, Staron isn't super willing to explain, even if you go to him outside of class. However, weekly self-proctored quizzes are easy and help keep you on track. Tests are very doable, just do the weekly optional hw assignments
Failed 1st exam, barely passed 2nd, then took midterm and finished the class with a high B+, don't give up! When the content starts feeling hard to you, GO TO DISCUSSION, ask the TA to do problems until you get it. Exams weren't easy; study before and do the (optional) hw. He taught in a very understandable way, so take him, but get ready to work.
I took Staron over the summer and have no complaints. He teaches the material well and ensures we understand it. Do lots of practice Quest exams and ask for help if you get stuck! Exams and the final are out of more than 100 points, giving some room for error. The class is time-intensive, so I'm glad I took it during the summer.
Decent lecturer and a nice guy. However, the tests are more difficult than the class material and are very time-constrained. If you're not a super fast worker, you will most likely run out of time on the tests even if you know how to do each problem. I would personally take someone else.
3 tests for 75%, final 15%, hw 10%. Can get an A, but expect to spend a lot of time outside of class to do so. No study guides or extra practice problems, but notes/hw is representative of tests. If the test average is lower, he grades out of 90 instead of 100 (ex. 79/100 vs 79/90). No e.c., attendance isn't mandatory. Good teacher, hard class.
Lectures are really good, exams were weird(1st one not too bad, 2nd one absurdly hard, final okay), but final replaces lowest. I learned a lot and he made the class approachable!
The teacher's approach in this class was discouraging and unhelpful. He often used passive-aggressive comments. The tests were significantly harder than the examples provided in class, leaving students unprepared and frustrated. Additionally, the TA offered minimal support, which compounded the difficulty of the material.
Very test heavy class
There are pre-lecture videos that are not required but are essential to succeed in class. Attendance is not mandatory, but lectures are not recorded. The professor is sassy but funny. Three exams, 25% each, so you have to be a strong test taker. There is a lot of HW, but exam questions are directly pulled from in-class examples and HW problems.
Dr. Staron's Lectures were incredibly well put together, methodical, logical, and easy to follow. The course is very test heavy, and the final is a large portion of the grade. I learned so much throughout this course and I completely recommend Dr. Staron if you want to learn the subject material.
exams were almost never like the homework, he once insinuated that we shouldnt go to office hours because he wouldnt help, sooo much homeworks
The reviews are very deceiving. I took this class earlier and I never liked one bit of it. You had to go to lectures or you would be behind, and while he was able to make the content make sense, he was just boring to listen to as he was always condescending. He made Test 2 horrible, but he did end up curving it. Doable class, just a mid professor
Staron is a great lecturer, and I feel he teaches the information well, but the difficulty of the in-class problems and the homework is nowhere near the difficulty of the exams. The exam problems were very tricky and he didn't give any partial credit for the free response. Semester exams made up 75% of your grade which made each one make or break.
Genuinely, Professor Staron is a great person who constantly tries to help his students. However, his tests are worth most of your final grade (85%), with three midterm exams (25% each) and one final exam (10%). My main concern is how the structure between professor and teaching assistant is, which many of my peers find to be unorganized.
This is NOT the teacher you would want during your first semester of learning calculus. Though he is nice and is very confident in the material, there is absolutely no room for error. His exams count for the majority of your grade and he sometimes does not even give half-credit on free responses. Every exam is just a make or break in your GPA.
I came out knowing calculus AB in high school and took his calculus class to get hopefully easy credit, it was the opposite, he made the grade in your class fully dependent on the exams and the tests for absolutely unnecessarily hard and the averages were really low, yet he still didn't put any curves.
Your grade in the class basically depends on how good you do on the tests. Lots of opportunities for extra credit on each hw assignment but it barley even affects your grade tbh. Tests weren't hard imo as long as you understood the practice problems in class and on the gradescope hw. Dude is kinda sassy, you can tell he really loves math though.
lectures were OK, not recorded tho. he has true/false questions on exams that are more hypothetical than computational (even though his syllabus says that the class is computational). Exams have very few (1-2) partial credit opportunities, which makes it easy to miss a lot of points very fast. hard to connect with or reach out to outside of class.
Very test heavy (midterms are 75% of your grade), barely any partial credit though some of the questions are ones he assigned during lectures & gradescope. Lectures aren't recorded but instead posted. Lots of HW for only 7.5% of your grade. It's recommended to watch pre-lecture vids since it's a flipped classroom style. He's sassy but kinda funny.
I felt that my grade in the class didn't accurately reflect my ability to do calculus. There was little room for error on the tests as very little partial credit was given. The lectures were helpful and informative, but he gave absolutely no guidance on how to study for the tests which was frustrating given how much they weighed.
The tests are worth alot and the lectures build up to them. Attendance should be mandated since the course material is semi-tough and not going to class can hurt you alot thus participation/attendance matters a lot. The professor also gives alot of homework and these homework questions are nothing like the tests at all since the latter are harder.
Lectures aren't mandatory but if you want to do well in the class you HAVE to go to them. Initially, I was struggling in this class even with a decent calculus background. However, as long as you go to the lectures and go through the lecture problems before a test you will do fine. The homework is very challenging sometimes though.
Dr. Staron's lectures are good and easy to follow for the most part. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should definitely go because his lectures aren't recorded, rather just posted. Midterms are 75% and final is 10%. The questions he put are a lot harder than most homework problems with no curve at all. Wouldn't recommend if you want a good GPA.
Gives lots of hw very time consuming but worth essentially nothing grade wise. Exams are so different than hw, no amt of practice left me confident on a single exam. Class average was either borderline or failing every exam- most ppl took ab bef this class- def not an accurate display of ur calc knowledge. One exam mistake will tank ur gpa
Extremely passive-aggressive to students and makes them feel clueless if they do not understand content. Although I got an A in the course, I witnessed countless students struggling simply because the class is 85% exam-based and there are no curves. Once I got used to him, I did better in the course but don't take him if you're too sensitive.
He's so incredibly passive aggressive. His lectures focus on the wrong things. The test is SO MUCH harder than the homework. TESTS ARE 85%. OFFERS NO EXTRA CREDIT OR CURVE. I had legit had to go to therapy since taking this class.
I took this class in Fall 2024 and it was really difficult for me due to the noticeable difference in lecture, homework, and exams. 75% of the grade are exams with 10% being the final, so unless you know formulas well and can do meaningful educated guesses, this class is very strenuous. The book may be the only real practice for the exams.
Probably one of the worst professors to take M408C. His class is so test heavy and he does not give partial credit for most of the questions so it's really easy to get a bad grade. He gives so much HW and it barely counts towards your grade. The HW did not reflect what was on the exams either.
Tough Class. Great professor. Go to office hours for help if you don't understand the material.
Do not take. Tests are weighted extremely heavily and he makes them half multiple choice with no partial credit with theoretical answer choices. MULTIPLE CHOICE SHOULD NEVER BE ON A MATH TEST. Very easy to do extremely poorly on an exam because of this. I think it's a lazy move on his behalf. Take Blazek or something else, not Staron.
Regardless of your knowledge of calculus before taking this class, you will leave with a thorough understanding of the content. There are 2 weekly homework assignments, and a large percentage of your grade is based on exams, but if you show up to lecture and put in the effort to understand the material, you will pass.
Good lecturer, but 85% of your grade is based off of two exams and by no means is this class an easy A. The exams are designed to be very challenging, nearly impossible to finish, and on top of that very little/no partial credit is offered on long, free response questions. You are far better off taking nearly any other professor.
Taking differential equations with Staron was personally one of my less enjoyed classes. His teaching style is very formulaic and rarely goes over the reasoning behind the computations he performs during his lectures. This is obviously my preference so take it for what you want. I also think that his exams are far more challenging than his quizzes.
Literally the goat of interest theory. One of the best professors I've ever had.
This class is the definition of an easy, application-based math course. It is not at all theory-heavy, and we spend a lot of time working through practice problems in class. After you memorize the formulas and know when and where to apply them, you are good to go!
He is an outstanding lecturer, and he really knows his material. The class itself is very interesting and perfectly paced. My only complaint is he required us to memorize so many formulas (no formula sheet/cheat sheet allowed for exams). The exams can be tricky, but he gives many opportunities to practice.
He's good for M329F! Your grade is pretty much like 90% test grades but the tests are relatively easy (questions structure similar to HW and examples). The weekly homework doesn't take more than 3 hours and he does a good job at helping students memorize formulas/ concepts by explaining it in a "silly" way. Good prof for Actuarial Science majors!
Staron gives a lot of extra credit but only on the homework which doesn't relate much to the tests. Even though attendance doesn't matter, the examples he does in class are much helpful than what you do on the homework. Discussion are also very helpful as long as you've gone through the homework ahead of time.
Staron is a good lecturer and is very knowledgeable. I was hoping his class would be a free A since I took calc BC, but he makes calc 1 harder than it needs to be. Actually insane amount of homework, would make us do Quest and textbook HW every week. Harder questions on exams compared to other professors. Exam-heavy class, one mistake and it's over
The exams make up majority of grade. Quizes are free 100s but exams require self-teaching and studying outside what is taught and assigned. Hes definitely not the worst and this class is passable with an A if you are willing and able to put in the work for it. Find old exams, make study friends, A's on both midterms = exempt from final. Good luck!
By far the most stressful class I have taken so far. His lectures are amazing and engaging, but exams make up 85% of the grade and are hard to prepare for. Quiz, textbook, and lecture problems don't compare with exam problems, which made studying a stressful ordeal. I never had to study for 408D but 427J with Staron was a different ball park.
His lectures were clear and he would go step by step. However, the exams were difficult - more centric on understanding concepts (which you must teach yourself as he teaches steps more than concepts). If you are a slow test taker, you will not have time to finish. However, the pre-class videos were useful for review before exams. Quizzes were easy.
Makes the difficult course content feel much easier. Explains everything very well and concisely in lecture and provides loads of online materials to make studying more manageable. Not a very nit-picky grader but also does not make his tests easy. Tests were about 90% of the grade but were very reflective of the material he provided.
I ended this class with a good grade, but I'd never recommend taking Staron. He only grades your final answer on majority of his test questions, and partial credit is hard to earn. This makes it very difficult in diff eq as mistakes are frequent. Quizzes are easy, but his exams are not. Take another professor as it's easy to fail an exam.
Knows that he's doing lectures help a lot in understanding the content. At times, might go too quickly making it difficult to understand but he's overall good in lecture. There is a lot of quest and gradescope homework every week along with weekly quizzes during discussion. Attendance is not taken, but lecture's are not recorded
extremely passive aggressive, twice he posted the wrong hw and corrected it AFTER everyone did the wrong version already. have to email him at 11pm the night before an exam for the "practice exam" key (10 times easier than the actual exam) because he ALWAYS forgets (1 time the key was half wrong hello??) the tests are harder than other professors
To be clear- Dr. Staron assumes that most people have already taken some calculus in high school. He provides some material for students new to calculus, but the course is focused on applying calculus skills using algebra. It's a tough class, even if you've already taken calculus, but it's worth the depth of understanding you will receive.
He's a great professor the only reason someone would do bad is if they underestimate math like I did. I never had to math in hs. As long as you study and listen to your TA, and pu to lecture you'll be chilling. Contrary to popular belief, Staron is a good guy and teaches well.
Professor Staron might not be the easiest professor for 408C, but you will learn the most in his class. He presents fundamental principles behind calculus in such an interesting and engaging way, and honestly I love his dry humor. Yes, the tests are hard and there is a lot of homework, but if you care about the material, you will do just fine.
I was surprised to hear from other people that have taken Staron in other courses speaking negatively of him! I think Staron was the greatest prof I had this semester. All I had to do was take my journal out in class, follow along, and participate. Just do your hw and enjoy this good professor that actually interacts with you.
He is like kinda passive aggressive in lectures. And the class is also very test heavy.
Staron was great! He's a little zesty at times but it's cool. Great lecturer except sometimes it gets corny cause he repeats the same things over which I don't like but I'm sure most don't mind. He's lowkey highschool teacher coded and treats the class like one but he definitely is great at teaching. The lectures make sense!
Computational exam problems reflected what was covered in lecture, but conceptual exam problems didn't as there were a few gotchas. With a background in calc, exams are doable, but you will need to put in work. Don't take him if you don't have a calc background. Homework can be excessive and unreflective of tested content but is good exam prep.
Very test heavy class. I understood everything during lecture and on the homework, but the tests were far more difficult. You'll hear the same thing for everyone coming out of 408C. I personally thought he was a good teacher, many would disagree, but the exams were a level of difficulty not previously seen in the homework, quizzes, or lectures.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DIDN'T TAKE CALCULUS IN HIGH SCHOOL! This class was very test heavy with difficult questions. I do not recommend.
I entered 408C after taking Calc BC expecting an easy A, and the 4.1 RMP suggested the same. I was completely wrong. While the professor is knowledgeable, he makes the course WAY harder than it needs to be. After bombing the first test, I struggled and worked hard to get myself up to at B+
