Geology, let's face it, is boring. But I love how Prof. Swanson throws up comics and jokes to help make the lectures fun. He's really awesome!

Quiet guy, nice, great sense of humor. Studies volcanoes.

Superb teacher. Very humorous, polite, and erudite. Good professor for all of us liberal arts majors! His personality turns cold, yet interesting science into a warm subject. I wish he taught more classes!

Fabulous prof. Not being a science student, I found his teaching style and approach to the material easy to grasp, fun to learn, and this prof makes you want to come to class. A must take!

His class is very easy, and you don't have to do any reading, all you have to do is go to class. He makes the class interesting.

lets put it this way, this professor is so awesome and makes geo. so interesting, i might even change my damn major to geology, he's cool, laid back, but at the same time you dont waste your money and you actually learn the stuff

Professor Swanson is an awesome teacher. I've never considered geology very interesting but it was by far my favorite subject last semester. I would definitely recommend taking his class. Just come to class and take notes and you'll pass easily.

This was my favorite professor. He makes class fun and throws in jokes. All you have to do is go to class and listen and you'll do fine. He is very helpful and answers any questions you have. You will learn many new things painlessly. Swanson is definitely the right choice.

Easy A (easiest class at UTSA). The sad thing is that there are morons out there that get below an A in this class. If this is the case then drop out of school start working the corners b/c you will amount to jack.

Class isn't that boring. I'm not a science person at all, but the material is actually pretty interesting (well, most of it). He is a nice guy and loves to crack jokes. He also makes it very easy for students to do well. I didn't use the book once, though, and still got an A. Great prof.!

Super easy. gives you section reviews and answers them line by line. just get the reviews, and go to class for answers. study the review, get an A. the end.

He is a very goofy prof. no need to buy the book, complete the study guide as the lectures go and tose will be your notes to study to ace the exams. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Great professor! He's really funny. Sit up front (because it can be hard to hear) and pay attention to the lecture. Do the study guide and you'll definitely get an A. He goes out of his way to make it interesting and fun.

Prof. Swanson is a good guy, tries to make jokes during class. He makes the material alitle easier to understand with his PowerPoint lectures. You don't necessarily need the book. The first test is tough, but its pretty easy from then on out. Good class to take to finish off your science credits.

You do not need to buy ANY of the books. Print out the study guides and take them to class. He answers most every question during lectures, and will answer any one you miss, if you ask. Study for the tests. I did well on the first 3, and not so well on the 4th, but ended up with a B. No EC or homework assignments. Just 4 tests. Go to class.

What a sweetie!! You don't have to buy the book. Just go to the review lectures. He has a gentle sense of humor and slips jokes into his lecture slides. You can tell how much he loves his job. Makes interesting jumps to non-class material. Take him if you can.

I've only had him for one day and he seems like such a badass! he's so nice and tells awesome jokes that no one in my class seems to get. he's really straightforward about how his class isn't very challenging. he's awesome! take him!

I hated this class. His lectures are boring, so thank goodness he posts his powerpoints on webct. The tests aren't too hard. You don't need the book, or to go to class really.

Prof. Swanson knows what he is talking about! Puts little jokes into powerpoint presentations that caused my class to laugh hysterically. Do not need the book, just print out study guide questions and take them to class. Not hard class, but tests were a little challenging for me. Definately recommend!!!

Good class for non-Sci-maj. Yes notes are all P.P. and takes 4 best test grades of 5. Difficulty is average, 1st test is hard then gets easier. Soft toned, funny and helpful. Go to class, when he sees attendance low he gives a couple of actually test ques. out. Go to class, read chps.&notes and you will pass.

He is the cutest old guy, but not the best at teaching the material. The tests are kind of difficult and he is confusing. Very sweet, though. Not an easy A. He made the material more difficult than it needed to be.

I think he's great, especially during the summer. The class is suppost to be 2 hours but he breezes through it in about 30-45min. The tests arent as easy as he makes them out to be but he has a different grading scale that helps. I recommend him.

It's hard to believe that anyone could say anything bad about this professor. Those who did obviously did not put one bit of effort into the class. This class was so easy, and he even gave an easier grading scale than any oter professors I've had. An "A' is easy with minimal effort, if you can't do well in his class maybe college isn't for you!!

took third planet... HUGE class - posts powerpoints, study guides, and his notes. Book isn't necessary. Total cakewalk -- just study the study guides (DUH!!) and show up every once in a while. Make sure you have all the notes somehow before the test and you'll make an A. Definitely reccommend this cute little guy!

Exams were straight from the notes. That said, go to class, take good notes, get an A.

DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! he post his pp slides, notes, & study guide ALL online. thats all u need for the test. therefore, going to class isnt necessary but i go cuz it might help & i feel bad cuz class is so empty. lectures might get boring but he tries and he knows his stuff!! 86=A. i have an ez A. take him!!

Don't bother buying the book; he posts everything you need online. But the book he wrote is worth buying, it's interesting! I didn't think this class was easy, but it's not hard either. Going to class isn't crucial. Don't take if you aren't interested in science.

He's a nice guy, but he needs to be more assertive and a bit less soft spoken. You do not feel motivated to attend because he has the answers to the study guide already posted before lecturing. It's an easy course and he's delightful.

Study guide and study notes are the only necessities for an "A." Do not buy the book. Read power points and study the study guide questions. Easy "A"

He's nerdy but fun. As long as you go to class and fill out the outlines/reviews he gives you, you'll get an A. You'll rarely use the books (if ever), but he wrote one of them, so if you like to support good professors, buy it anyway.

Probably the nicest professor at UTSA, will make you laugh in his lectures with corney little jokes that seem hilarious because the subject matter is kinda dull. Tests range from easy to hard, it just depends on how well youve prepared. Has a crazy grading curve a A ranges from a 100-86, you get the idea. Listen to his lectures and youll be fine.

4 tests including final, all weighted equally. give 1 retest for any of the first 3 tests. types his own textbook that is provided on webct; attendence unneccessary. i've got a 95 average despite not going to class for the last 3 months...just do the review he provides & u get an A

Dr. Swanson is great! The material is easy, the powerpoints are fun, and the 'textbook' is written by him and provided on WebCT for free. Allows one retake if you missed or bombed Tests 1-3. His grade scale allows people that would get a high B get an A (86 is the lowest for an A, as opposed to 90). Excellent for satisfying Level I Science Core.

took third planet, this class is an extremely student oriented class. Made for freshmen. Makes corny but funny jokes, goofy guy but knows his stuff. Extremely intelligent guy. Alot of information to remember but i would definitely take him for third planet.

Most of my friends barely got an A in the class but that was with days of hard work and studying. This class is not an easy A. I got an easy B though. You don't have to buy a textbook in this class since he provides it to you online. You HAVE to work in this class.

I loved this class,even though it's not my major. Hardly need the book, except the novel and powerpoints. He is very helpful and understanding. Go to class and do well on the tests, and you should be fine. I recommend him to anyone wanting a fun and interesting class.

This professor is awesome. He tries to keep the class interesting by throwing in random slides and jokes.If given another opportunity to take a class with him I would in a heartbeat. He's very understanding and gives make up exam opportunites to students. I loved his style of teaching &there were so many interesting things to learn! No book needed!

i'm pretty sure the study guides would have been helpful. he did give us a day of review before the test, yet the review literally re-covered all the material, therefore; it was hard to narrow what was important to know for the test. so, i studied everything, especially the major concepts, but random questions on minor details will pop up.

Swanson has a good class. You have a variety of choices. Go to class and read = A. Read but dont go to class = B or a C. Go to class and dont read = D. You cant walk in and bs his test you'll fail

He's really nice, doesn't ask for much else besides exams and an occaisonal essay

Easy class. He is a pretty funny guy and makes this subject fairly interesting. Dont blow this class off though as the tests arent THAT easy. Hardly anyone ever showed up for class so that probably explains the low class average.

Take this professor.Really easy..Easy A.If you are on science level 1(3rd planet)you may found the quiz is a little bit hard.BUT if you continued to level 2, it is really easy.

Great guy, really genuine. Took as summer class, no studying required, interesting lectures and I enjoyed his puns immensely. Wasn't interested in geology before, but would definitely take another class from him if possible.

Took his honors class, was pretty easy, should've tried easier and gotten an A, but got a B... He's a pretty good teacher, funny at times, very nice guy. I am taking his Intro to Earth Systems class next semester. Oh, and textbook is online, so thats a huge plus.

This guy gots jokes lol some really stupid but this class is easy... test are based of the text book that he wrote. i barely attended class and just studied the text and got B on every test

Honors course, pretty easy. 7 quizzes over different topics from 1st book. 2nd book stuff is easy. Gives extra credit to help your grade, wants you to get an A

this is NOT a blow off class. go to class, read his book (off line, so its free), and answer his focus ?'s. for a summer class, it really wasnt that intense. his book has some really long chapters, but good info to know. that class can be boring, but good info from the teacher. had a good time, but happy its over!!!

Went into this class expecting it to be a blow off class.. I was wrong. I found tests to be difficult after reading the text and doing focus questions. There is no way to cram all the info in a few days before the test. I would say for the most part attendance is required to do well. Focus questions take LOTS of time.

If you take this in the Honors program be prepared to fight for your grade. Lots of geography, too many specific details, no test retakes, no extra credit, and a harder textbook with a lot of typos. He's a nice teacher and he is helpful but he thinks that making his class punishing is what being in Honors is all about.

4 tests for the semester. Gives you about 100 questions to answer as a review for each test. Tests are not easy if you're not used to studying for a week in advance. Unless you're a guru when it comes to Geology, you really need to put effort into this class if you'd like an A, however, it is not impossible. Free textbook online. Nice man.

Intro to Earth Systems was a breeze! Professor Swanson loves what he does, and although he can get a little goofy and off topic he works with his students. No tests, just some quizes and then some attendance assignments out of a novel. The novel is $20, the textbook is optional and an old edition. The attendance assignments add to quiz grades!

Professor Swanson is a fantastic professor! I had no head for science and still got an A in this class. The book was written by the professor and he gives it away to his students. All of the test question are covered in class and in the text and he provides a review of everything and anything that will be asked on the tests.

Overall he is a good teacher and his reviews are basically the test.

Overall, the class is pretty easy but DO NOT slack off. Do all the focus questions, attend class, and study the review. The homework assignments are fairly easy and not hard at all. Dr. Swanson is clearly an introverted person. He has a monotine voice which gets old real fast. The SI Leader seemed a bit snooty. Just saying.

Attendance is not manditory, but it is encouraged. He covers everything in class, writes his own book (which is given away), gives out focus questions for each test section, and tries to be funny in explaining things. Listen, complete the focus questions, and do some kind of a review and you should have no issues.

That class was the death of me. I would die of bordom maybe just because the subject itself is so boring. He is an all right teacher. Lectures can put one to sleep though. His tests are weird in that you think you do really well, but then you dont. I got a B (my only non A). Textbook is free which is a plus, saves a good 100 bucks.

This is an extremely easy class. The textbook is on blackboard and its free. He gives you focus questions and most of those are on his tests so its important u do those. Going to class is pretty much a waste of time and if u go u will probably fall asleep. There are also 3 homeworks buy theyre not hard at all

Didn't think I'd enjoy geology at all but it was a great class and he teaches very well making the class extremely easy if you go. You won't need to buy a textbook for GEO 1013 because he uses a book he wrote which he posts online for free.

Bring focus questions to class and his lectures follow them pretty well. He has his textbook online for free but you dont need to read it unless you are missing a focus question. 4 test(final not accumulative) , hw optional. Good class, he makes jokes
