This guy is an idiot. Clearly he needs a refresher in what he teaches. Every other teacher contradicts him.
If you are able to teach yourself..you will pass this class. Don't depend on him..he won't teach you a thing!If you ask questions,you won't get an answer.He doesn't know what he is talking about, but he uses big words to make you think he does.
Terrible teacher. Has no idea about his subject, answers questions with questions, asks students to read one page article for 40 minutes then leaves the class. AVOID!!!

Very Intelligent. However, useless as a teacher. Lazy. Never prepared for class. Arrogant. Shows too many movies. Last semester showed 8 classes of movies, missed 4--that's a month of class!!!
He cancels too many classes. I have attended more than he has. This is a man who thinks 2+2=JELLO.If you have nothing better to do, take this course cuz it's easy to pass. Just don't expect to learn anything but it is a good place to catch up on your rest

He is very intelligent, but doesn't know how to teach. He cancels more classes then he teaches. I showed up at more of his classes than he did.
Probably smart but no idea about teaching, iggnorant to students in class, bad at both making and scoring tests, needs to take a break from teaching because its not where his heart is.

I found Eric's class a headache from day one. It was a complete waste of my TIME and MONEY.I could not believe that the college offers this course with such a HORRIBLE teacher.classes are only 45 mins which seem like forever in his class!!!!!
I found Mr.Tompkins teaching style very hard to get used to and because of this, it was very hard to understand Sociology. Consequently, most of the people in all of his classes failed the Midterm, which in turn,there was a mass exodus.

he was hard and he was wierd and i think he was stoned somtimes, but he acually taught me a lot of cool stuff, and i acually remember it.
Boring class, it's like storytime in 3rd grade except no one takes turns reading and the Tompkins skips pages because he doesn't know or care what he's teaching. Passing is easy if you read the book, but gathering the motivation to pass is very different.

He doesn't prepare you for exams, drones on and on, and doesn't take criticism well. He's a classic example of losing passion for your work. I never want to be in any of his classes again. Take my advice and avoid.
I have had to report to the dean 3 times because of his extreme unfairness and testing. AVOID AT ALL COST...SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!
What a horrible teacher.He has definately lost his passion for teaching and life. He doesn't lecture, he doesn't cover course material and he's self-righteous to boot. Don't take this class it's beyond frustrating.
Excellent prep for Upper Division classes. A girl who vocally complained is now retracting her statement because he offered a great lesson in accountability. He is brilliant and has lots to offer but resists 'spoon feeding' it. Great for those who want an education!
prepares you for upper division classes, refuses to spoon feed his students, and teaches like one would at sfu. the onus is on the students to ask any questions they may have. he can only assume that it's clear unless somebody asks. if everyone gets it, theres no point to staying the full hour
Imagine you've been kicked in the face by a cold boot. Now imagine that you get kicked in the face three times a week for an entire semester. That is Tompkin's class in a nutshell. He drones, he's self-righteous, he hates his job and he hates his students.
Eric is the best teacher i've had in my academic career. Just show up to class and finsh the work,maybe indulge him in a little conversation. How much easier do you want it? He gives you all of the exam questions ahead of time.
Too many people whine because they dont get good marks. All u have to do is show up and talk to the guy, he defintly smokes the pot though haha. And i think hes kinda hot

Was confusing and hard..but i did end up getting a C+ on my McDonaldization essay
I have no idea what most of you are talking about. Tompkins was one of the best teachers I have ever had! I found his classes entertaining, and yes, INFORMATIVE. . . People who do poorly in his class do so on their own accord. . NOT because of his teaching. . At least he makes an effort to be there, unlike some instructors. . .
since the beginning of the semester, roughly 7 hours of lecture have been missed. 2 of those hours were during a day class. the remaining 5 hours were missed in the night class. two hours of lecture were missed on the first day and then most recently, an entire three hour night class was missed. proper lectures aren't given during class time.
Easy A. He is boring, and nuts. A total hippy, but if you read the book, and go to most classes, talk to him outside of class, and participate in discussions, you will get an A. Pretend you are stoned when writing and have the "stick it to the man" attitude and he will love you. everything is a conspiracy in that class.

He's not uselesss or a tool, but the class can get pretty boring, even though the work is super easy. And he's nice... easy going... and I guessed on my final mark, tho I'm sure it's in the A area, if not higher. Oh yea, you can't depend on him to reply to your emails!

Pretty easy to follow if you read the book. If not then you wont have a clue what he's talking about. Nice enough teacher. Teaching style is a bit different though.
i have two classes with him and in both classes he says the average for the exam is very low. he should really realize he needs an easier exam then or different teaching style if nobody is understanding.

I personally enjoy his class but I was one of few who actually tried in the class. I found notes were easy to follow.
His lectures are often irrelevant to what we are learning and he doesn't follow his own outline. Tests are all written. Only learn from textbook.
very entertaining lectures and discussion. Exams were a bit difficult but nothing too extreme.
He goes on an on in a monotone voice, all the while not answering questions, and uses a condescending tone with all students. Read the book, that's pretty much the answer he has for every question. Buy the book, you will need it to pass and to teach yourself!
His assignment criteria is unclear. He does not allow you to ask questions (ignores your hands up) and talks over students when you do try to make a suggestion. He is not encouraging at all. He does not respond to emails and his assignment feedback is not helpful and/or confusing. He marks some students harder than others, biased marker.
I liked his teaching, he made it so that you understood it. He is wiling to help you if you go and see him during his office hours.

If possible avoid at all costs. This guy is honestly one of the worst teachers I've ever had, nothing he lectures about is relevant for his testing material. His tests are ridiculous you need to read the textbook front to back and try to teach yourself the material. That's the only hope you have of learning anything in his classes.
His notes are straight from the textbook. I have a three-hour lecture with him and he gets about 4 pages into the book then you gotta read on your own. Might as well not waste your time by going and just read at home. We're at midterms now and I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't know a single persons name so Im' doubting participation matters
