A new professor. His best qualities are his patience and understanding. Rare qualities out of a math teacher and you can tell he is passionate about what he was doing. Creates an open environment in a math classroom that I have never seen before. Very sweet guy. Take him!
The worst math professor I have ever had in my life. The exams are nothing like the homework. I have never met a teacher that uses the most inconvenient way of solving problems.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Nothing on the homework is actually on the exam, he never explains anything clearly. You are so confused by the end of the class, and will understand nothing.
He really cares about his students and tries to make the class as engaging as possible.
Tough grader do not recommend
He is super nice and accommodating but his teaching methods are kind of questionable. The homework material was never the same as what was on the test which was frustrating. He is always willing to help but I did not really understand the material the way he teaches it. You definitely have to study on your own in order to pass.
Professor Wawerczyk is very caring and passionate about math and does his best to engage the class. He is a very fair grader who gives lots of partial credit and he is very accessible as his office hours are very long and multiple times per week. Do your homework/practice tests and go to his office hours and you will succeed.
He makes math unnecessarily hard and he does not explain anything clearly. I am going to fail because his class is so hard. Take at your own risk.
There is nothing nice to say about this guy. His tests are extremely hard compared to other math teachers here and he does not teach you the material that is on the test. Half of the answer key on his study guide was wrong! He is AWFUL. Please do not take him. I am warning all of you.
His class was the worst I have ever taken at UM. I am very good at math, but this man made it impossible. Why did the school hire this man?!
Awful.
His tests are impossible and the homework has nothing to do with what is on the test.
He literally grades the hardest out of every calc teacher, hood jokes arent funny and he thinks that is supposed to make us like him better, he doesnt teach he just writes on the board and says we do this then we do that With NO explanation of how he got there or what formula is used.
I didn't learn much attending his classes but practicing the reviews and doing the homework are enough to prepare you for his exams. Wawerczyk is very helpful and accessible during his office hours. He gives extra credit points and super easy quizzes to boost your grade. Put in the effort and you'll get an A.
I had to work my tail off to get a B. If you fail a test you will not get a good grade.
Tbh he's pretty chill. Not the most amazing prof but definitely not the worst. He knows what he's talking about and willing to help when you're confused. I think a lot of the reason I didn't do very well was because I wasn't studying as much as I needed to.
Very clear and knows what he is talking about. Likes participation and wants to help you if you are confused. All of the grades are really just the exams and homework.
Grade is based on exams but you know that from the beginning of the course. It helped taking AP calc beforehand in high school, but if you go to his office hours he is a lot of help before exams. He really cares about his students.
Tests are way harder than HW and class examples. Not an easy class if you're not a stem student.
Dr. Wawerczyk is a great person who is always willing to help, however his class is so hard! I had to work so hard to barely pass the class. My GPA went down because of this class. I would not take him unless you are willing to study math every hour of the day.
This was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I took the two semester calc instead of the 1 semester calc because I thought it would be easier. I WAS WRONG. Goes way too fast for us to follow and expects us to pass. Such a ridiculously hard class.
His method of explanation is too mixed up. His approach to one question would change if he were to approach the same question. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! IF YOU WANT TO GET A W ON YOUR TRANSCRIPT, BY ALL MEANS, TAKE HIM. HOMEWORK HAS MATERIAL THAT WAS NEVER TAUGHT IN CLASS!
Horrible teacher. He gives extremely hard tests and is a tough grader.
Is Professor Wawerczyk the best Math professor at UM ... not even close. However, he's very accessible in his office hours and is always willing to help. There are no surprises on his test, if you do the review and go over his lecture notes you should be fine. The lectures are boring, but try not to skip class. Overall, he's an decent professor.
Awful professor. All bias aside, he simply does not care for his students. No face cams or mics for zoom classes make an impersonal environment and he often just goes through the lectures without much concern. Easy A as long as you do the work but he dumps a lot of homework on MyMathLab without much care or regard.
This guy gets a bad rep for not caring about students and I couldnt disagree more. He gives a lot of review before tests and the homeworks really help go w stuff he teaches in class. Attendance is non-mandatory, but it helps if you actually go to understand whats going but you can kinda teach yourself most of the concepts (it just takes more tim
I'm terrible at math, but his class wasn't too hard. He actually cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He's a pretty good professor that answers any questions you might have. There is A LOT of homework and a quiz every week. Still, he never answers emails and is a harsh grader. He also makes you turn off cameras for Zoom, which is sad
He is not as bad as people make him out to be. His lectures are a bit fast-pace, and he expects students to know certain math concepts before he teaches. He gives about 4 homework assignments per week, and a quiz every 2-3 weeks. He always asks students to reach out with questions, and tries to be funny in class. Material on exams are on homework.
Dr. Wawerczyk is super nice and genuinely cares about his students. He's a true nerd for math and wants everyone to do well in it, and he's totally accessible outside of class and more than willing to answer any questions. Super chill and understanding about extensions and his class is pretty easy. Definitely taking him for MTH 141 next semester :)
Dr. Wawerczyk is an amazing professor. His experience in the field shines through in his teachings, and despite being math, he made ways to make his class fun and engaging, whether it be with jokes or class interaction. I would highly recommend taking him! I would again if I could.
I liked Professor Wawerczyk. Definitely a solid choice for a math professor. He really wanted everyone to do well. He understood that people in Math 101 weren't STEM people, & so explained concepts in a way that non-STEM students could understand. The homework was hard but helpful. Showing your work is really important. Overall great professor!!
WOW HE IS AMAZING!!!! Take him if youre the type of person that gets confused a lot he will not make you feel dumb. he will answer your emails within minutes. whenever you need help he is always there. He tries to make a quite complicated subject as easy as possible and is an amazing grader! He is one of the best profs Ive had
Love Professor Wawercyzk! One of the best math professors by far. He is very attentive to the needs of his students and is always available. He will make sure to answer any question you have until you fully understand. For exams, study the review and you should be just fine. There is weekly webassign but it's not too challenging. Really great guy.
The reviews below don't do this professor justice. He is a good professor and has a very straightforward approach. 4 exams + final, 4 quizzes and Cengage hw (about 4 assignments per week). The lecture may be a little boring but he teaches well and there are no surprises on the tests. Tests are graded fairly. Do the reviews and you'll pass the test.
Nice guy and I am a fan of his teaching style. He answers emails fast and answers any questions you have. My only complaint is that your grade is mostly dependent on the tests and he does not offer a lot of opportunities for other grades. There is HW and 2 extra credits but it does not help much. Also, he did not let us see our final exam grade.
These reviews don't do Wawerczyk justice. He is so nice and wants to help his students. If you show up and pay attention, do the homework, and the reviews you should be fine. His exams are not too difficult, do the reviews and you should be fine. I definitely recommend having him. I loved his class and he made me feel like calc was easy.
He's the most caring calc professor in uni. He makes sure everyone understands the material, you can email him anytime with any question and he'll explain it. Tests are mostly based on in-class material, so no surprises. Grading is very clear, gives some extra credit at the end.
TAKE PROF. W FOR MTH161!!
He's a good professor. He always letting students in class know that he wants them to pass and wants to help them. He's not great at answering questions, but usually students will stay after class to have their question answered 1 on 1. Super caring guy and he's always making jokes during the class lectures.
I emailed him countless times with questions, did all the homewok, and studied on my won and got help from my friends. Still didn't pass although I showed so much effort and did everything he asked me to. Unfit to teach math for those who aren't STEM kids.
Good professor. He does care about his students and does want to make sure that you have an understanding of the lessons. If you haven't taken calc or trig before it can be kinda difficult and sometimes fast paced, but if you take notes, do exam reviews, and go to his weekly zoom office hrs, shouldn't be too hard. Taking him again for mth141.
The best professor you can take for Calc 2. Hes funny so class is entertaining and his lectures are great. His reviews and in class problems reflect the exam exactly, take him if you can.
Prof Wawerczyk clearly is passionate about math, sometimes he strays off topic and talks about concepts far beyond the course which can be confusing. If youve taken AP Calc his class will be much easier. He is very accessible outside of class; responds to emails, will schedule more individual office hours, etc. Cares about his students.
SUPER NICE and accessible to students outside of class, in class, though, he can seem intimidating. His lectures go VERY fast, so watch the recordings right after, and if you skip a day you miss A LOT so go to class! He answers homework questions (basically telling you how to solve a problem) in a matter of minutes through email, so REACH OUT!!
I really enjoyed this class. I have never once said that about a math class, but Dr. Wawerczyk was very patient in explaining concepts and answering questions. I feel like I have a way better calculus foundation now than before I took this class, and I took AP calculus in high school. Be present in class and listen and you will do well.
He’s a great Professor and is super caring. He’s really accessible outside of class and will respond to emails in minutes. While participation isn’t mandatory, attendance is taken everyday. He also records his lectures but I still recommend going as much as possible. Also he doesn’t tolerate phones in class fyi.
Best calculus prof! I took Dr. Wawerczyk by chance for MTH140 and basically built my schedule around getting him again for 141 because he was so good! Don't listen to the harsh ratings - he truly wants to see you succeed and is by far one of the most patient professors I have ever had. Answers emails within minutes and is super helpful all around!
INCREDIBLE professor! The best math teacher I've ever had. Grades SO fairly. Gives every opportunity to bring up your grade. Go to class, ask questions, do homework, and you'll do great. Truly cares about his students and makes class fun. Also very good at explaining concepts and posts all notes and lectures! 100% recommend for MTH 140+141.
BEST PROFESSOR!!! Math is hard, but Wawerczyk will always explain. He answers questions and help until he is sure students understand. Exams are VERY fair; he emphasizes exactly what will be on the test and chooses the most straightforward examples. Pay attention in class, take notes, and do the test review packets...you'll be fine.
First few weeks he was so kind and really wanted to help students learn. Throughout the course, he got more and more aggravated during class. He encourages students to ask questions, but if you ask one he makes you feel very stupid about the question you asked. Overall not a bad teacher but crazy attitude.
I love him!! Idk why is rating is so low he's such a great teacher. Math was by far my favorite course thanks to him. Sometimes he can be a little mean, but his teaching style is amazing and he describes the content so well! I will be taking him again next semester.
Professor Wawerczyk, while very knowledgeable, is not the best nor the worst Math professor at UM. He is accessible out of class and provide weekly review sections. However, he is a tough grader who does not round even if your grade is extremely close to another letter. The class is also not curved despite relatively low averages.
Pretty average professor. If you have to take him just do it, it won't be the worst. He's pretty nice and neutral until he's not. He gets agitated randomly. Even if you feel dumb for asking questions just do it, u have the right
Best math professor I've ever had. Not only does he explain the concepts, but he explains why the concepts matter and proves why they are true. He records all his lectures so you can rewatch later if you feel a need to. He also takes notes for you during class about the topic itself. I worked my schedule around taking him again for MTH 141.
Tough grader but fantastic professor. Heard he is the only great math professor and although his tests are hard, his students are the only kids at the end of the semester who are not lost at the end of the semester and do good on the final. Took him for all my math courses and he was great!
He's very good at explaining the concepts in depth. He's the only math teacher I've ever had that has made me understand why math works the way it does, not just how to do the problem itself. He seems harsh sometimes, but taking him for math is worth it.
Needs things to be done HIS way, is very dismissive and arrogant in teaching, excessively challenging examples of otherwise simple concepts, overall one of the least enjoyable classes of my adult life.
No electronics allowed ever in class and would kick you out if even saw them. Scary guy and really confusing when lecturing, but would only count 5 quizzes for the entire semester. Not a fair grader and looks for reasons to take off points even if you get the answer right
Professor Wawerczyk is the best for calculus. He is very clear when explaining, always open to questions, and the problems we work through in class are very similar to the quizzes/tests. Always accessible outside of class and just a genuinely caring person! Just make sure to stay off your phone lol. Taking him again for 162.
Lectures can be very boring and repetitive, not a ton of student participation, but is always available to answer questions and go over topics. Lots of homework weekly and quizzes but you can drop most of them. Provides study guides for exams and review days. Final was pretty difficult.
Took MTH 140 and 141 with him. Amazing professor, very knowledgable, and tries to make the class fun with Desmos demonstrations. Would definitely recommend!
He was a very tough grader, and made me switch majors because of how much he made me despise math. That being said, he is very willing to help, and I think that if this class was my only class of the entire semester maybe it would've been fine. His exams are graded terribly, and there are much easier professors out there if that's what u want.
He explains the concepts very well and is always open to questions. However, he has very strong opinions about random topics and will share them. He has a very strict no electronics policy, but does try to give as many points as possible. Seeing graded tests and quizzes online was really helpful! If you do not have to take calc 2 then take him.
You can see this professor deeply cares about math, and in lectures he would often go way into detail of small things. He is always very open to questions and did a lot of examples during class.
I've taken a lot of math at UM and Wawerczyk is definitely one of my favorite math professors I've had. I took MTH210 (linear algebra) with him and never felt lost. He made it feel not too difficult to understand the subject, which is inherently abstract and difficult to grasp. Assigned no more than 1 worksheet a week. Would definitely recommend.
I've taken a lot of math at UM, and Wawerczyk is definitely one of my favorite math professors I've had. He made linear algebra, an inherently abstract and difficult subject, feel somewhat intuitive and easier to grasp. He assigns homework every week, but it's never a ridiculous amount and he prepares you well for it. Would definitely recommend.
Worst class and professor I have ever had in my life. He doesn't grade tests accurately and his lectures are all based on his level of knowledge on math. He is strict and very intense on his students, which isn't bad, but the way he teaches is boring. Most kids average a C, and he tells them that they are lazy and should drop his horrible class.
Professor Wawerczyk is awesome. He spends alot of time lecturing about fundamental ideas so that students really grasp the concepts. He always posts his lectures, replies to emails quicky, and is accessible outside of class. Most people are stupid and lazy. Read the book, attend lecture, do the homeworks, and go to office hours and youll be fine.
Took for Calc1, harsh grader, takes off a ton of points. He is strict with phone policies and attendance but really is passionate about math and does his best to show it and teach well. Don't just google the homework, if you dedicate time to doing most of the problems you will be set for the quizzes and exams. Quiz weekly but only top 5 count.
I do not recommend professor Wawerczyk. The only positive thing I can say about him is that he is passionate about math. Otherwise, he is a mean natured person. He says he's willing to help you however, he does it in such a demeaning way. He uses his power over his students to his advantage. I think you'll be better off with a different professor.
Great Lecturer and professor. Passionate about math and also passionate about having his students learn. Top 5 Quizes and Final replaces lowest test so relatively easy to pass if you do well enough on his tests.
This professor is the absolute worst grader of all time. Multiple quizzes and exams I have gotten the correct answer, but points taken off because I missed a parathesis or my work wasn't his exact way. I have never hated a class and a teacher more in my entire life and I plan to bring this up with the math department, to save future students.
Our class had an attendance problem and our prof would frequently reprimand us, even though I always went, so it was kind of annoying. Lectures can be boring with little/no class engagement. Other than those issues I thought he was great, clearly passionate about math, and ALWAYS ready to help outside of class/email
Just don't. I have always excelled in math, even AP calc, and yet I managed to do horribly in his class. He's mean, will humiliate you, and will call you out for missing one singular lecture even though his syllabus states that attendance is not mandatory. He tries to act like he cares about his students but he doesn't. Save yourselves.
I didn't focus to the homeworks and studied only using the class notes and EXAM STUDY GUIDES and got an A on all 4 exams and an A in the class. Prof W will allude to his "favorite" problems in class and those are usually on the exams. Pay attention to how he formats his answers in class because he will take off points if you dont answer like that.
HE IS THE BEST. All the bad reviews about him probably don't care about the class. He's passionate about what he teaches and wants everyone to excel. He gives you EVERYTHING you need to know for quizzes and exams and makes it clear if you don't do it a specific way, you'll get points off. He records lectures and posts his notes. TAKE HIM!
He is extremely smart when it comes to math and answers every single question thoroughly and makes sure you understand. However, a lot of unnecessary homework. Calls class out for low attendance rate even though attendance isn't mandatory. Tests are ok. Quiz for every discussion. Study questions he did during lecture.
terrible. r
He's very smart and clearly very passionate about math. Although, he is very annoying and complains about his other classes during class time. The homework is a lot harder than anything we could ever do in class and there is a lot of it every week.
His expectations are unreasonable. He had a baby so he canceled the next 2 classes. Then after that the next 2 were on Zoom, which is completely understandable… except for the fact he made us take a test the next day after not having had a lesson with him in person for a week. He's a tough grader. More than 4 absences is an automatic fail.
All quizzes are about lecture questions. Pretty easy if you participate and do homework. He seems like a cold person but is actually a nice guy.
The workload was unbelievable and he graded extremely hard. I was drowning in studying for quizzes and exams, all of which were extremely difficult. I found him very mean-spirited and condescending, pretty much a bully. You can master this material with much better teachers and avoid unnecessary abuse. I earned an A- but it was the toughest A ever
Do not take this class unless you naturally excel at calculus. His lectures do not align with the exams as they do the quizzes, so be prepared to study. The homework is unnecessary in that it does not match with the tested material either. Lectures are basically a waste of time since the material you need that he teaches is hardly mentioned.
Some of these professors need to learn its not their job to fail students, this guy will fail you at 5 absences no questions asked, will give 0 credit for a correct answer without one notation, and overall a rude person
GOD. SEND. This man is the best math professor ive ever had, by far. 10+ office hours a week, always responds quickly to emails, and the classes are fun and informative. 5 absences and its an automatic fail, so dont be a doofus and show up. Can be a little passive-aggressive, but as far as gripes, thats it. Made calculus understandable
I love him. I took him for Calc 1 and 2. He is a very strict grader and will deduct points. However, he is a great lecturer and explains concepts very clearly. He is always willing to help and accessible. He provides study guides before exams and quizzes and you will never be surprised on a quiz. 5 absences results in a complete fail.
Wawerczyk, was the most efficient math teacher I have ever had. His personality was not super easy to get along with however his ability to explain mathematical concepts was exceptional. There was not one topic that I felt that he was not able to thoroughly explain to me. Tthere are some difficult concepts but Wawerczyk is the way to go 100%.
Lowk a scary guy, would kick kids out for electronics, fail you if you missed more than five classes, a little condescending. But he taught the math really well with plenty of examples. Gave study guides and hw that prepared you well for the tests. Quizzes every week but only top 5 counted. Take him if you're prepared to go to every lecture.
SOOOO incredibly rude and would jump at the chance to publicly humiliate students. kicked a kid out, yells at them, made a "no giggling" policy. decent at explaining material, but every class made me actively want to drop my major (math).
I've taken multiple math teachers at UM and he is by far the best at explaining all the material. He is very straight forward and doesn't surprise you with extremely difficult problems. He tells you exactly what you need to know for quizzes and exams. Very efficient at teaching, definitely put a lot of effort into the class and study. TAKE HIM!
Wawerczyk is a very intelligent professor who teaches extremely well. If you are having trouble understanding something conceptually, you may ask him any question for good help. He may come off as condescending or passive-aggressive at times, but he doesn't mean it.
Bad teacher overall and even worse grader.
Teaches incredibly well! He can be a bit strict, but for me, how well someone teaches matters most. He puts a lot of effort into lectures and makes students really understand the concepts easily. It is structured in a way that sets you up for success as long as you do what's asked. Genuinely the best math teacher I've had.
Professor Eric is very knowledgeable and teaches very well. Although he gives a lot of work he prepares you very well for exams! If you email him about more office hours he will do meet and help you with whatever you need. If you are willing to put in the work you will be able to get a high grade and actually learn.
Dr.Wawerczyk is an amazing math professor. He presents material in a clear manner while also providing some interesting historical background on mathematics; always available for help. When it comes to grading, he is very particular and takes of points for bad math grammar. Lectures are recorded, but don't miss 5 classes or you fail. W proffesor.
Great prof. I learned so much in his class. He can be perceived as kinda scary at first but he's a funny guy. Show up to class. Review practice exams and you'll do fine. Best prof in math department.
