He's a good lecturer, but his textbook was hard to read. He expected a lot of memorization of minute details. It was a pretty enjoyable lecture to attend, but his tests were pretty difficult.
Eric is smart but very unorganized. His lectures were full of random words, but not much conecting material to help it stick into our brains. His tests were crucial to your grade but SO hard. I don't know many people who did well in his class : (

His lectures can sometimes be a little hard to follow. However, he loves what he teaches and tries to make it fun for his students. He has a good sense of humor. Great teacher.
He is a brilliant man. Is tough, but thorough. If you take the time to study, and prepare you will do well. At times I didn't feel he would tell us the point of what he was teaching us, but always got around to the point in the end. Come to class rested and be prepared to absorb alot of info.
Very interesting class in lecutres. Can be very boring. Dont bother trying to follow the text because it should written in german
Awesome teacher, loves the subject and is equally enthusiastic. Take good lecture notes and you'll be set on the tests, there's a lot of info there, but he's not out to trick you. Two thumbs up!!

Good lecturer. Nice guy with the classes best interst mind. Best teacher i have had so far. Tests are hard, but if you attend lectures and take notes thats all you need to get through them. Doesn't rely on the book too much.

Wise is a great guy with a great personality. If you get an F on a test if you talk to him about it he will raise it to a C. Very hard class, unless you are a skilled Botanist or Environmentalist. If you are looking for an EASY Science class, Wise's Botany 100 is not what you're looking for.
his lectures are fascinating and super informative but he does jump around a lot. its hard to take good notes. tests are IMPOSSIBLE and since your grade is based mostly on the tests, most ppl did horribly. be prepared to STUDY...A LOT
He's so funny and sometimes weird. His lectures are super cool. BUT BEWARE of tons of quizzes and hard exams.

He is an awesome teacher. The only problem I had was because the class was at 8 in the morning, I fell asleep a lot. But you don't really need the book. You just have to pay attention and take good notes. He made monkey kinda interesting lol
One thing he did teach me is not to take a class taught by the author of the course text! he couldn't refrase his book, if you don't understand him he walks away, instead of refraseing himself. I was taught by my peers and not the teacher.

If you have a chance to take BOT100, I strongly recommend you not to take his class. He was the most unhelpful teacher ever.

Is this the same Eric Wise that I took for BOT 100?Because I don't see how anyone could think that he is not a great prof.Sure, his class was challenging, but he was fair,and did his best to help his students.For the students that cared about thier grades,and about learning something and not just skating by,he was the best.Loves his job,smart guy!
Great teacher
He's a very approachable professor. He's funny, smart and makes the subjects he teaches interesting. Anytime I had a question on something he was covering, he always answered it in a way I could understand. You can tell he really cares for his students. I learned so much in his classes and had a blast in the Field Botany class! Take Field Botany!!!
He just wants students to learn. He doesnt want to fail anyone. He makes learning fun because he is smart, know what he's talking about, and makes it interesting for us. I loved this class and I would take it again anytime

He really knows a lot about what he does and you can tell he loves his plants. if it would have been any other teacher I wouldve passed out with all of the plant phylums but he made it really funny and interesting. If you need a biological science definitely take his botany class.
This guy is chill but the class is pretty hard. He takes attendance and gives a lot of notes every class. If you want to breeze through CC this IS NOT the class to take. If you are interested in learning from a good teacher and like a challenge, this is the class for you.
These students obviously never encountered the real eric wise...he is so spiteful its creepy. He likes to be mean. He thinks its funny to be rude to people, no overstatement or libel, its true! And he makes you slave away in his garden at futile tasks for bot100, and THEN he didn't count hours of my labor and his labs are UNHOLY uggggggg
He is a great teacher, he's fun (slightly flirty but ignore it), and made Physiology a good and memorable class. He makes you want to learn and is enthusiastic in his work which transfers to his lectures- they always flew by!
Field botany was the best class i have taken at city college. We went on a field trip with the guy for 5 days. he is so damn funny and playful. hes smart and understanding. anyone who doesnt like him is crazy. class is so easy and half a semester. no homework and one test!
no matter how hard you work or how good you do on your test or final, if he does not like you he will not give you the grade you deserve, it's sad and unfair but it's true. He's all about favortism, so if your not a brown noser than be sure to get and unfair grade.

I'm not a science person, but this guy makes it bearable, if not fun. Very approachable (and you'll want to, he's gorgeous), very knowledgable, a good class if you're in need of a lab science. Material isn't overwhelming if you take good notes and study hard before tests. A's are within reach. Get to lab early, he does quizzes in first 10 mins

Eric is a really cool teacher, makes class fun and teaches the material very clearly. the lab is a science lab-so microscopes and drawing what you see. but eric makes most of them fun and enjoyable

Wise was super fun, always kept class interesting. I had no interest in Botany and after this class is made me more fond of it :) Lots of studying, recommend study groups! He loves participation, and is extremely passionate about botany. Take him!
He definitely is entertaining and seems passionate about biology, but his lectures are unorganized and his tests are ambiguous. Text doesn't help much because he doesn't cover a lot of the information in the text book. I am a bio major and had a hard time passing this course. Do not recommend, but he is the only plant bio teacher.
Tough course, Eric helped a lot. Gave plenty of opportunity for points in lab. Tests pretty hard, but based completely off lecture. Make sure to attend class and take very good notes, then study notes carefully. Office hours helps a lot. An A definitely possible with effort
Great teacher, great class. He loves what he does and he is always excited to talk about it. This class is hard. I have a terrible memory which made it very hard to hold my own. His tests are in depth. But I talked to him regularly and studied my butt off and got a decent grade.
Eric really loves plants haha! His tests are all on lecture so make sure you don't miss any classes. Lab is super easy. Obviously learning about plants can be super boring but Eric tries to make it fun. He has a good sense of humor too! Labs are really relaxed and very social. Just be sure to study!! Lab quizzes are a little tough so be ready!
He is a great instructor with a great sense of humor! Always willing to help if you are willing to do your work. Lectures are really interesting and actually made me quite excited about plants, which I thought would never happen. Attending regularly and staying on top of your lab work is a great base for a successful semester. Take him!
Very disorganized during lecture. He changes every test from previous semester, so looking at previous tests won't help. All his test questions especially the essay questions on his tests come from lecture. Missing class is a terrible idea.

He's a cool guy but honestly a horrible teacher. He teaches his student as if their training to be botanists. He's very unorganized in his painfully boring lectures. His tests are based on the smallest details of his messy lectures. I like him as a person but not a professor. The class is horribly boring as it is and his teaching ways make it worse
Eric is an awesome guy, and pretty easy to talk to. This class was extremely hard for me to study for. You basically have to right down anything he says, as exams are long and will cover everything, seriously EVERYTHING you went over in lecture, even if Eric doesn't make it seem important. I got a D on every exam and still passed with a B.
Lectures have no structure. If you're like me and don't have a large pre-knowledge of biology, you don't know when he has moved onto a new topic because of the lack of structure. Very difficult class which is not confidence-inspiring whatsoever.
His grading is arbitrary and tests are ambiguous. Do well on the paper and in lab and you have a chance at an A even if your test grades are eh. Def reach out to him and become friendly. Also: do not think about cheating on his tests. He will find out.
He's pretty terrible, especially if you have other good (or even average) professors to compare him too. Lecture is unorganized, tests are vague, lab is easy, the paper is a free A if you actually do what he asks you to do. I know it's plant bio, but it doesn't have to be THIS bad.
I took the 6 week summer course as a prereq. It's basically an anatomy and physiology crash course. You read 3 chapters a week, and have 1 exam at the end of the week. TAKE the practice exams. He pulls questions from there. READ the book. It's a LOT of reading. He responds quickly and respectfully. Glad I took this before AP, little started course.
Worst professor i've had. Funny but LAZY & has unrealistic expectations. His lectures are outdated (says he hasn't updated them in yrs & info is different now) & have NO type of organization but he expects you to know EVERYTHING. Most random specific info he spends 2 seconds on will be on the exam eg. draws a picture but asks you to write an essay
Graded by 6 exams, along with six homework assignments. Homework assignments are creating multiply choice questions for each chapter, super easy. The exams are insanely hard, even with access to the internet. I say skip out on Wise's online class, the class itself was pretty difficult especially online and frankly he isn't a good guide.
So far with my 3 years of being a city college student, this is the first class where I did not receive an A. He wants you to memorize every detail from lecture for the exams, which are very intense and demanding. He's definitely passionate about plants and botany, he just does not have student success as a priority.
The majority of his students enrolled for the semester have taken him previously and did not successfully pass the course the first time . His lectures are all over the place he puts one word on the board with no explanation or draws diagrams and pictures of things and verbally explains them instead of writing anything out. Record his lectures!!
Eric is honestly a good professor. Yes, his lectures are a bit all over the place and messy, but to be honest he tells us to read the textbook to guide us on structure, and its kind of your fault if you are unprepared for exams. Working with the information multiple times to organize it and understand it goes a long way. Take him! Its fun
Im so glad I took bio 101 with Dr. Wise. Half of the semester was online bcz if covid-19 however its the same concept study the lecture notes and KNOW the lab book like the back of your hand, espionage for tests you DO need to know the lab material which correlates with the lectures either way. Take good notes from lectures, didnt use book.

Professor Wise was an amazing Professor for the somewhat daunting subject of plant bio! He is always very positive, extremely caring and willing to help, and in general wants all of his students to succeed. The lectures were sometimes a little confusing and it definitely takes studying outside of class but I highly recommend joining his class!
Professor Wise is a good teacher, however, the exams are tricky. I took intricate notes and memorized as many details as I could, but there were always questions on the exam that stumped me that were from the last unit. If you are planning on taking this course, study the details (SO important) and memorize the notes in a fun way (it saved me)
Good person but not the best professor. Seems to care more about his own knowledge and less about actually teaching it. Seems indifferent to students. Really hard tests considering its easy enough lectures and an intro class
For this being an intro plant bio class his tests are insanely difficult I studied for weeks and failed the first midterm. His lectures are kinda all over the place and doesn't cover everything on tests. He uses proctorio for exams so be prepared for that. exams are EXTREMELY specific and very little time is given to complete. MEMORIZE EVERYTHING
Eric's class can seem disorganized but he tells you exactly what is going to be on the exams. Much of the courses content has been cut for the online environment and there are many resources available if you're confused or stuck in the class. Being unprepared for the tests really comes down on the student and the amount of effort put into studying
He is the absolute worst. He grades ridiculously for research paper. He cares more about his own knowledge than actually helping others. He tries to discourage other students to persue a career in biology. 10/10 would NOT recommend to take. You have a better chance to take the class in a different CC tbh! Not understanding, esp. with covid online!!
Prof Wise is a super sweet guy and the only reason I didn't do well in his class was because I didn't become interested in the topic until it was too late. Make sure to study way before the test (like a minimum of 3 weeks) and the tutors are absolutely amazing. He's really nice and you can tell he loves what he does.
Multiple choice exam questions are lecture material only, and written questions are from the reading. If u memorize lecture and reading questions you'll get a B. I've gotten A's in all my English courses yet I wrote a D paper; the average for the paper in my class was 33/50. So if you want to maintain your A grade get help with the paper.
BE prepared to read !! I took this class over summer and the class consist of 6 exams and 6 discussion. I've had pervious experience in Anatomy and Physiology to get by but his lectures are very short and don't cover the whole material. He requires you to read the textbook. The class average for each test was like a 60% and he doesn't curve.
his class was so difficult definitely do not recommend, gives many exams which is proctored and some questions were not even on test - there was a paper to do and i tried my best on it and i got a failing grade :((
Really difficult class and proctored tests
One of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Prof Wise outright stated certain material would not be on tests and still put it on the exams. He does not even zoom for office hours and is completely disengaged with his students. If you want to be a number on a screen to a teacher who doesn't care about you TAKE WISE...
75% labs- very easy! 25% quizzes- very hard!! There was very little content in this class overall, labs take 30 min MAX. However, the quizzes are 80-85 questions with only 60 min to complete. You must retain tons of information with very barebones labs to work from.
Mr. Wise is very hands off but that does not make him a bad teacher. He gives his students the resources they need to succeed at least for BMS 146. Take advantage of the test Questions (Active Recall) that he offers through Connect and you will have a better time. Make sure to study. This class is test heavy. STUDY THE TEST QUESTIONS!!!!
Professor Wise is pretty mediocre. Only exams and one research paper dictate your grade. Make sure you pick your research topic EARLY because if you tell him last minute he will know you procrastinated and will give you a failing grade, even if your paper is excellent. Responds only once a day to emails, and only in mornings.
As a person, we have had some nice conversations. However, the class itself is painful to say the least. The tests are 80+ questions, proctored, NO NOTES and you only have 60 mins to complete. They are not easy, either. I have taken higher level bio classes and this has been the hardest yet. Not for someone with other demanding classes or a life.
No homework, no quizzes, no lectures. If you like to be independent and teach yourself the entire the course then this class is for you. When I reached out for support there were no tutors or extra credit opportunities. Just 6 exams and discussions that had no context. Wouldve been a great class if the professor actually applied himself.

Worst professor Ive had yet. Hes not accessible except by email, lectures are irrelevant,. You have to read almost all of the textbook and do the labs. Submit your paper topic the day he releases them. Tests are insane. Take anyone else if you can. If this was my first bio class I wouldve switched from a STEM major.
This is a hard class. It is in the pre-med track. Eric does just fine at teaching. He is not unreasonable. Plant bio is a touch subject involving physics (some quantum ex: photosynthesis) and chemistry. Just study and work hard! He offers open note lab exams that help pad your grade. Just study!!
I took this class online and wish I had done more research on my professor. I didn't think a good prof mattered when taking an online course... WRONG. I really don't recommend Eric Wise as a professor unless you want to take tests on information you have not been taught and have no understanding of. Only reason I passed was cuz of my classmates.

Lab midterm and lab final are open note but good god the amount you have to memorize to pass every test is insane. No extra cred opportunities besides a makeup exam that's still hard to pass. Loved his lectures, he's a funny guy that's really passionate about bio. Wouldn't recommend if you're not prepared to study super hard.
Take this class in person with Jen! Wise barely gives a shite online, it's clear with his same old recycled material. You won't learn much and it's nearly impossible to learn. He doesn't accept any late work and his lectures are irrelevant when it comes to helping exams. If you do all the labs you'll get a decent grade, but you won't learn much

Professor Wise is clearly passionate about plant biology but does not seem involved with his class. The lectures are a couple of years old and poorly organized, exams cover oddly specific subject matter and he does not give study guides. He seems like a nice guy, but he is not very understanding over email. It's too bad.
This class was awful. The lecture videos were posted online, and were 2 years old. Not all the material on exams were even covered in the video because he wanted you to read 80 pages from the book a week. I only got a B because I did well on the essay. There was no extra credit and he was not accessible in the slightest.
0/10, test are intense, lectures are normal for a biology class but note heavy, rude prof, hard to communicate, no extra credit, not worth the work
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Absolutely no study guides for 100 question tests that were impossible. Insane amount of information to study without knowing what questions were going to be tested on. Quizzes every single week on the labs that were also hard to study for. Find a different teacher to take this class with.
He's a truly terrible teacher. City College professors are supposed to help their students achieve, encourage them to pursue higher education. I took his anatomy course because I was interested in the subject, but having him teach made me lose interest. He's uncommunicative, uses old lectures for an evolving topic and lacks empathy for students.
He is super nice and considerate, and if you actually study you should be able to do well in class. He posts all the questions for the tests (without answers) which can be 300-600 terms. The lectures are long and he will talk about things that don't matter. Also, you don't have any homework so if you do poorly on tests then you are screwed.
He's a nice guy but can't really teach that well. However, his class is super doable if you just use the test banks he posts. I would study a week or two in advanced and make quizlets for each question. Sure its ~500 questions, but 500 questions over 14 days is only 35 questions a day. Do your lab book thoroughly in preparation for the 2 lab exams.
Tough class with no mercy. Lectures were outdated and exams covered obscure details. unstuck study and the textbook were essential for studying. Not recommended unless you're ready to put in serious work.
The professor was largely unavailable and offered little support. There were no lectures, unclear test guidance, and exam questions often didn't match the material. Labs were confusing and hard to follow. Overall, the course was frustrating. I would not take this class again. Tests are proctored
Dark and difficult times lie ahead Harry. Very dark times. The class average for each test was an F+ or a D. Exams are proctored and you cannot look off the screen.
