Average com class, pretty boring

Very helpful and encouraging.

She grades way too hard and the class is boring. Never got an A on any of my papers, which I had past English teachers review.
The class was very boring. I only went a few times. Typical "highschool type group work crap". I only showed up to turn in the papers and ended up with a B.
Boring class, but a helpful teacher. Assigned a major 10 interview paper very close to the end of the semester.
She makes you work hard, but you learn a lot.
Erika was great. if you work hard she'll reward your work. to the person that said her class was equal to one in high school i have to say i imagine you didn't take enough colleges courses to know what one is like and i'd also bet you didn't get too far past mvcc if you did at all. thanks erika for helping me get into u of i. i graduated in dec 0
She graded things too hard. I did a research paper for her and I had a past English teacher look it over and I made all the necessary corrections and I still got B on it. Eh, she was okay...

Lousy
i loved her.. great assignments.. very easy

Took Erika for a creative writing class online, didnt like her that much, she didnt seem to know that much about science fiction and fantasy (my topics)and graded all papers as if they were from a different genre then what they where!
This is com 101 not sociology. All papers were more about sociology topics. Have to read extemely dumb / ratial books. Very unobjective with grading. If you don't share her views forget about your grade.
Awesome. Well organized, very clear and great assignments.
She is tough but she's good. I liked her a lot and look forward to taking her again for the Fall '06 semester.
Class was boring. Do a lot of high school style group activities, but then again, what else can you do for three hours in a writing class. If you have decent writing ability, you can get As on the papers. Grade rests on four papers. Otherwise, not too bad of a class.
very friendly
For the most part, she's an OK teacher. The class sucks, less 'Composition' and more 'Sociology', and I get the feeling that she grades based on her personal opinion (ie, if she hates President Bush, and you wrote a paper casting GW in a positive light, you'll score low regardless of whether you did everything right or not). Overall, B-/C+ range.
Unbelievable. I consider myself a good English student but this teacher is impossible to please. Class is primarily group activities and she grades based on her opinion. Don't let the first night of class fool you, it's a LOT of work for a 200 level class. If you want an A, good luck. I agree w/ the immature comment as well. Find another class..
Nonsense! I would not recommend anyone to take this class. I never understood what exactly did she want from me all semester long. Nothing would please her. In my COM 101 and 102 I had A's and in her class I got a C!!! Unbelievable!
You can tell this prof wants to give you a course that includes more than just listening to lecture and writing a bunch of papers. She comes up with innovative projects that really make you think.
Deiters had some cool assignments, but she was tough. I enjoyed class (lots of small groups) and the stories were good.
I took her COM 101 online. She answered emails within a day and she returned papers within a week. I was nervous about the class but she always helped me with ideas. We used one of the books a lot, but the handbook didn't really come into play.
Did not like this teacher at all-she sucked for online poetry. We were expected to get feedback from peers for our work. Feedback for my poems from my peers was usually "Great job" with no criticism, and she never helped me with my poems either and then I would turn them in and get low B's when everyone else thought it was awesome. She's clueless
I took her online poetry class too. I thought she was really helpful. She offered feedback whenever I asked. When I emailed her, she replied right away. Sure, the workshops weren't that great, but Deiters was great.
The stories and novels we read were okay and I was surprised we read Choke for class. The discussion boards were okay. The projects were different. She's a good online teacher. Very involved.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! I have taken her for 2 different classes. AWFUL TEACHER! To get good grades in her class she has to like everything about it. Don't even think about writing on a topic she doesn't like. even if it's an "A" paper and she doesn't like the topic you will not get an "A"! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Dieters is hard. You have to go to class and you have to write and research. First, the homework was easy then the essays got harder but every thing made sense.
I would not recomend her. I earned a C+ for my first essay because I am an internation student, but everything else was fine. Expects you to go above and beyond of what she asked. Very hard grader.
Erika is pretty good. She gives easy assignments but is a hard grader. She gives constructive criticism and cares about her students. Overall Com-101 in Professor Deiter's class was pretty successful.
Erica wants you to "Reach for the Stars" she sets the bar high, not because she's mean but because she cares about you and wants you to think on a higher level. Erica has made a huge difference in my life and I highly recommend her. One of the best Professors at Moraine!
This class is meant to build a foundation for your college writing. She is tough, but grammar etc are things we are supposed to know. She simply asks you to perfect your writing. Ms.Deiters is a great teacher, and very helpful. She always encouraged her students to ask if they need help. I took alot away from this class and I'm glad i chose her.
I was a b+ writter in my high school English class. Always came out with good grades on my essays, but Erica is a hard grader. I didnt't get higher then a c on my papers! I attened all classes (except for one, was sick) But she starts off easy, then goes hard! Not one of my top ten teachers at all.
She was the nicest teacher. She really cares and wants you to do your best. She is very helpful.I enjoyed her class.
I loved her class. I've never liked a writting class as much as this one. The projects are very easy but she doesnt give expamples to fallow off so that can be a little frustrating. Shes a little crazy but as long as u turn in all of your work and meet the requirments you'll have no problem passing. I'd recomend her.
Don't take her if you want an A. She is the toughest grader I have ever had. I'm an english major and no matter what I did I could never get better than a B+ on her papers. She treats her students like they are professional writers. Some say she was useful but I disagree. I don't feel like my writing improved from this class, if anything I lost con
horrible teacher, assignments were just stupid!!! HATED this class!!! and she hated me!!! if you like to talk. if you like sucking up definitely take her. NEVER AGAIN!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
I completely agree with everyone that she is a hard grader. I'd have literally ONE grammatical error and she'd take off like 8 points. really frustrating. but all the in-class assignments and 4 or 5 projects are easy. class flies by and she's very enthusiastic. nice lady overall.
I took this as an online class. It was ridiculous and the material was boring. It was almost impossible to please her. I am sure there is a better teacher for this class.
The person who put on here they loved her class must have been her. She is impossible to please. Does not grade or respond back in a timely manner. Never again! The assignments were incredibly time consuming. I have contacted the school regarding her. She asks twice as much as other professors do. Do not take her.
she really has to start reading other books!!! her stupid LOVELY projects are beyond stupid and annoying, i know she reads these so heres a tip for you prof deiters...COME UP WITH A NEW curriculum for your class!!! ur boring!!!
horrible teacher...!!! would never recommend anyone to take her class...she ruined the word lovely for me. thanks a lot!
She is obsessed with the meaning of lovely and every project on it is related to lovely. You are only allowed to miss 6 classes, and you dont even need to go to any because everything she goes over in class is the same stuff on blackboard everyday. The projects and papers were ridiculously hard and so much work required i do not recomend her at all
Mrs. Deiters class was so easy. If you would rather do projects than essays I suggest this class with her. Yes, she does emphasize the word "lovely" but it makes the projects an easy "A", if you try.
She is a great teacher. Easy and very easy to understand. There are guidelines that must be reach with each paper/project meet them and you'll always get a good grade. Extremely easy if YOU GO TO CLASS! She grades your paper fairly if your a retard and have poor grammar then expect to fail.
Decent teacher - definitely has her own style of teaching. Only downfall is everything is revolved around one sole author which, at times, gets repetitive and boring. A lot of the material was familiar to me from most of my high school classes, but overall an easy A or high B.
Ms. Deiters sets a solid foundation for those pursuing any Communication or English degree. She is terrific. She sets the bar high but makes it feasible. If you can't hack her class, it's time to move out of your parents' ba****t and see how far your expertise at Nintendo takes you.
I took the online class. Her syllabus is confusing and her work instructions are poor. The due dates are too close to one another. I took the online course thinking that it would be flexible, I was wrong. She is not the brightest, there are several typos, grammar errors, and misspellings in her instructions. I'm very disappointed.
I do NOT recommend Deiters. She does not grade fairly. She is obsessed with Amy Krouse Rosenthal and the "Lovely" project - Every assignment was based around that. I didn't learn anything in this class. I hate the word "lovely" now and have lost my intrest in writing. Again, I do NOT recommend her.
Worst teacher ever! Do not pick her. She grades papers unfairly and is so annoying with her lovely assignments.
This was my 5th class with Erica Deiters. As before, she has provided me with countless learning opportunities. She is organized and clear in lecture, discussion, assignments. She grades work fairly. If you work hard, follow guideliness, and meet deadlines you will earn a good grade and learn tools and techniques useful in other disciplines.
I took her online and I thought she was very helpful with explaining stuff
She is very enthusastic, and makes class fly by. She is a really nice teacher but her class is not easy at all. She givesto many asignments. Its not even a Com-101 Class The whole class revolves around Amy Rosenthal, the author of a book we read. This teacher is obssesed with her.She is also a very strict grader, i dont recamend her
very easy to be in class, she seems to genuinely care. although there are lots of projects, they're easy and fun. i recommend this class if you're creative.
Terrible teacher. The worst I've had yet. She makes us do the most pointless exercises in class and I didn't learn anything! She is inconsiderate to students and she grades so unfairly. I regret taking her class 100%. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
Very bad class and teacher. She expects you to be at her level and be perfect at writing. Dont take her, she doesnt care about you.
Ms. Deiters is an outstanding teacher. If you really want to learn literature & poetry, she is the best! She's always willing to answer your questions & concerns. I took 2 classes with her & learn a great deal. She is a great teacher for those students that care about learning and want to do fine in their profession. I strongly recommend her.
She needs meds, she's not clear about the assignments she gives us, and is very strict. She gave us tons of homework. It consumed my whole semester. She thinks everybody is at her level of understanding things and expects us to be. For crying out loud, its a com 101 class. Give us a break. She also favors some students and gives thems A's.
Not Easy.I took her as an online class. Her work is some what difficult and she does expect a lot regarding writing. There quite a few assignments and they kept me busy. If you want an easy class don't take her online.
She was a good teacher in certain aspects. She went by the syllabus provided for you in the beginning of the course, and gave us a good amount of homework that wasnt over-whelming nor not challenging enough. The only issue I had was that the ENTIRE course was related to zombies. I felt that we couldve done more educational topics
I took her Intro to Poetry class and barely received an A after working to my best ability. I really did enjoy the class however there are a few things I wish I knew before getting into it. She does not require attendance but if you miss an in class assignment you cannot make it up. She is an opinionated grader and makes it impossible to get an A+
This is a very tough course for a 101 class. All my other 101 classes were a guided learning experience since in a 101 class you have not mastered any material regarding the subject. She is a very tough grader for a 101 class and isn't very specific what she is looking for. You probably won't get an A even if you are trying your best! Good luck!
She is amazing and suportive and understanding !
She's a great professor. Yes, there were lots of papers and homework that needed to be done but it wasn't to the point where it was too overwhelming. When writing the essays, I did need time and she gives you enough to complete it. She gives great feedback and allows room for improvement. She even gives extra credit and allows you to miss 6 days!
good teacher, can get boring but will pass class easily as long as u do all assignments
Professor Deiters was one of the best teachers I've ever had. Many complained about her assignments, but that was because they were just lazy. As long as you go to class and listen to her guidelines you should be fine. At times her grading seemed very tough, but it's for your own good and will help you to do better on the next paper.
Mrs. Dieters is a great teacher, it was a little boring and some classes seemed really pointless but overall she's pretty easy as long as you do the work.
Did not like the fact that she puts you in groups to "befriend" everyone even if you have no common interests. Also, I do not like how she made us do these "missions" and write papers on it. Some of us have busy schedules and don't have the time to go out and perform these things in public just to write a paper. It was very uncomfortable.
ABSOLUTELY hated Composition 101 because of her! Her assignments were a waste of time, and she barely taught anything useful. All I learned was the word magnanimous. In the end, after I worked my tail off, she had the audacity to give me a lousy grade on my final. If you want to enjoy your first experience in Com101 then DONT think about taking her
ABSOLUTELY hated Com101 because of her. Talks about pointless things and gives pointless assignments. All I learned was the word "magnanimous." Barely teaches either..... I showed her my final paper and asked if anything else should be added and she said "Its perfect," but ends up giving me a D. If you want to be aggravated all year, then take her!
Deiters is not a good teacher at all. I just took her this semester and she is so terrible. I ended up with a C. She assigned work that is so unhelpful for English. She gives stupid projects, trust me very very stupid. I turned in all my homework all semester to receive a C in her class, she does not know how to teach. Save yourself from her.
The essays are not the usual but that's good in my mind. She explains the directions and gives examples. She not that hard. I liked the book.
She answers emails within a day. I asked a lot of questions she helped a lot. the book was okay and the assignments were not that hard. I thought an online class would of been harder but she made it okay.
Not too many assiagnments.
horrible teacher. she expects so much out of you on unnecessary/unrelated topics, I hated her stupid projects and she dont even teach anything. she just gives you tips and ask you to read the book to get inspired and thats all. I didn't learn ANYTHING from her
I was curious to read others' experiences and I was amazed by the negative comments left by others;specifically, by the horrible grammar used by those leaving the negative reviews. Clearly, they did not learn much from this easy course. My advice to others would be to follow diections and do not procrastinate assignments.
DON'T TAKE HER CLASSES! She is not helpful and only has office hour (she's only there for 1 hour) once a week.
She is a hard teacher who has different teaching methods, but if you can get past that you can learn a lot from her.
She's so specific. She will find any little mistake and take a lot of points off. She's a very difficult grader. Definately do not recommend.
If you looking for a class that introduces you to the start of writing essays, this class is not the one you are looking for. She teaches a class that is more of a creative writing class than a composation class. The last project that is part of the final is a visual presentation and to me teaches nothing about writing at all.
She graded based on opinion and did not understand the grammar rules she was trying to teach
Take this class if you want to learn one thing the entire semester: the word, "magnanimous." You can write an A quality paper in this class but if you cite something wrong or forget to italicize the title of a paper, you can expect at least a good twenty points off.I'm a lazy kid and didn't think there were many tough papers, just terrible grading.
Mrs. D wants you to be a better writer. She makes you write a lot but she is helpful and gives time during class.
Deiters grades essays to tough, she sometimes doesn't even know exactly how the rules of the essays are, her techniques are not like the way we are taught in HS. She grades discussions fairly but when it comes to poems, essays, research projects, and profile, she picks on the smallest things like the titles.
She is a really, really hard grader. It's the toughest writing class I have ever taken, but with that being said I still would probably take her again.
I wish she taught COM 102.
She's nice
One of the best teachers I have ever had in college!!!
She grades hard but her classes are not boring at all and you'll really learn something. She puts in grades pretty fast and really wants you to become a better writer
Although i did enjoy the content of the class; I found that her grading style wasn't very helpful. In one assignment she advised on omitting a few lines from the intro of my poem. When i followed her advice on the revision she said my poems intro was lacking on the intro. She can also be harsh and intimidating. Overall it was a poor experience.
Her class is horrible. Take another professor. With big projects if you follow the advice she gives you for revisions she'll still take points off. I'm not sure she knows what revisions are because she completely changes the assignments. I would NOT recommend this class to anyone. You can turn in all your homework and still get a bad grade.
Her class was great. I loved the book and I never read I was surprised. We rewrote our papers I think my writing is actually better. My grammar wasn't the best, it's still not great, but I'm glad we didn't talk about commas and spelling everyday.
The class was just what I needed to get back into school. Miss Erica gave us a variety of assignments so we weren't just writing essays and I still learned a lot about writing. I want to take her for COM 102 but it doesn't look like she teaches it.
I wouldnt recommend this professor at all. She grades very harsh . You can try your best as well as follow her guide and she will still give you a bad grade. She marks points off for the smallest details. This professor is rude, I tried to talk to her about a grade for an assignment after class and she made a scene in front of other students.
Took her online class in 2017. It was an easy A. I did not like the book that she chose for us to read, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, but it wasn't bad. The assignments are easy, no on campus trips required, good specific feedback on grades. The final writing assignment was a lot of work so give yourself enough time to do it and edit.
Grades tough but if you follow what she expects she is fair. The class challenges your writing ability, but as someone who waited 4 years to attend college, I needed the structure she provided to get back into the swing of writing.
I learned nothing from the online class. Most of our "learning" was supposed to be done through discussion posts with other students which revealed itself to be pointless as most responses would be "Great writing" and gave no negative feedback. I also learned nothing about grammar as she wouldn't focus on it at all.
mrs. deiters is one of the sweetest teachers! i took her for my first semester in college and i do not regret it. she will get angry with you if you constantly ditch class and do not turn in assignments but if you truly try you'll pass. i got a B in the course. show up, do your work on time and you'll be just fine!!
She is one of the worst professors you could take entering community college. All of her advice is downgrading yet belittling. She doesnt even give suggestions on how to fix mistakes, and will take off numerous points for small grammar mistakes. Definitely one of the worst professors Ive encountered, and made me dislike writing even more.
One of the hardest graders I have ever had. I thought I was a good writer until being in this class and receiving multiple Cs on my papers. I am a straight A student and I struggled finishing with a B. Lots of projects with minimal directions and papers graded with no rubric provided. I did not enjoy this class at all. Required reading a book :/
I only picked this professor because I registered late and she was my only option. Went by smooth at first, you can get full points on discussions no problem. My problem with her comes in with writing papers. I find it very hard to believe she ever gave out an A. Why is it that I can get A's in math science, hum, but not COM?? Ridiculous.
Contrary to other reviews I genuinely enjoyed Prof Deiters class and teaching style. At first I thought she was a tough grader, but she isnt. She simply gives good constructive criticism in order for you to improve as a writer. Feedback received should be applied to each new paper, I guarantee your grade will improve!
Her grading is very inconsistent, and she has told me through email I am not a rubric person. I asked her for extra help because I was getting about the same grade on every paper. She failed to provide this and instead sent me all the comments from my past papers that I told her were not helping me improve. She is a subpar professor at best.

Shes quite lovely on a professor-student relationship level. She is, however, extremely nit picky with her grading. She cares more about pristine grammar than the contents of your writing. One citation error will literally dock you an entire letter grade. If she doesnt like one of your sentences then that is another letter grade off.
Her class was my favorite class last semester. The book was interesting and we researched what we wanted to research. I wish she was teaching com102.
She cares a lot for her students and really wants to see progress throughout the semester. She has a bright personality and will do anything to help you. With that being said she was a tough grader. At times it seemed like she cared about punctuation errors more than your essay contents. Just make sure your citation is accurate and you'll do fine.
Always gives good feedback (a whole paragraph or more) and tells you the truth. Be good with grammar. Deiters is a tough grader follow the guidelines and you'll be good.I would recommend this class if you know how essay are written (Thesis, body paragraph, blah). The assignments are easy to hard. For example 100 point, then 150 point, etc.
Prof. Deiters gives super helpful feedback. Although she can be a tough grader at times, she will give you feedback that if you correct, you will be fine. Pay attention to the requirements and due dates. She gives exc opportunities that are super easy to complete. The book we read for class was actually really good. Overall, great teacher.
Very tough grader. This class shouldn't been as hard as it was. This is a 101 class aka an introductory level class, but was my lowest grade out of bio-180, psych, and a CNA course. Points are taken for the smallest reasons on assignments, but she's a nice teacher. I recommend taking a different professor though.
This professor was the most strict and nit-picky grader I've seen. Her feedback is very belittling. I spent hours on an assignment for her class and she said in her feedback, "I find it very hard to believe you actually tried to make this good..." . When you do ask her questions about an assignment she makes you feel dumb. Wouldn't recommend her.
Professor Deiters can be a tough grader, but her feedback helps you improve as a writer. The textbook is useful, and attending class is essential. For extra study help, try Unstuck study alongside other resources like ChatGPT. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course.
My experience taking Professor Deiters class was interesting, her assignments weren't in theory hard, but the way she graded them was “harsh”. I also felt as if she could have explained her requirements for essays better, her instructions were extremely wordy without saying much of anything, with no rubric provided. Overall didn't enjoy.
Tough teacher. You will become a better writer after this course. If you must take COM101/102, do it in person. Com online is miserable. You will be graded harshly and fairly. If you want an easy A, this is not the teacher. If you want honest and harsh critiques on your writing, Deiters can fulfill this. Avoid if ur not majoring english
Her class are very lively. Is extremely helpful with revisions. Reasonable amount of work required.
Professor Deiters is educated in her field, and you can tell that she has a genuine love for the craft. I enjoy her method of instruction and the enthusiasm she brings every morning. She provides activities that help the student break down different formats and encourages them to use a less traditional writing style.
Grades solely on personal opinion and if she likes the topic. Her feedback is unclear.
I've never had a prof who was so nitpicky and graded based on opinion. I chose to do online bc of my work schedule, worked 2 weeks ahead, and she freaked out. Why would you offer an online if you can't work ahead? Take a Dow, Wazwaz, or Beauchamp lit class instead- they're loads better. The final project is SO meticulous- just horrible all around.
