I only took her lab and she waits until the very last day to put in all the grades so you aren't able to do anything about them because its too late since they are due that day. I had an 89.24 and you need an 89.45 for an A and she wouldn't bump me even though I got good grades on everything else
if you don't take notes or print out every power point and literally memorize everything you won't pass.
Professor Nierth's class is challenging. If you want an A, you're going to have to work for it. She offers extra credit on all of the exams and drops your lowest test grade. The final is optional. Her reviews are very helpful and she does an online study session before each test which I highly recommend attending. Overall, she is a great professor
She teaches very fast, if you don't have the notes and memorize them then you won't pass. She does give extra credit and the homework isn't too hard but the tests are difficult if you don't 100% understand what she's saying in lectures which is hard since she jumps from subject to subject.
This class is challenging- if you want a good grade you're going to have to work for it. The lowest test grade is dropped + final is optional. Her test reviews don't help much, due to the test covering EVERY piece of info from her lecture. Overall, she is caring + enthusiastic about what she teaches and is never boring, but the material is hard
The hardest class I have ever taken. If you miss one lecture you will have a very hard time passing the testsl. Attendance is not mandatory but she will be able to tell if you dont go based off of your grades. Homework and quizzes are every week but are an easy 90/100 so it will help your grade. She is an OK professor but wants you to succeed.
Neirth is a good professor, the classes she teaches are just very difficult classes. She teaches fairly quickly but dont be afraid to ask her to slow down or explain something. She is definitely there to help you succeed. Attendance isnt mandatory but going to class for an overall avg. of 70% gets you 1 point added to your grade.
I took Dr. Nierth for Functional Biology which is a difficult class. She explained the topics clearly and tries to help her students. Extra credit for attendance and she has online reviews before exams.
She is SO sweet and helpful. This class is hard but she understands that. Attendance isn't mandatory but you NEED to go in order to pass. Everything on the test is covered in lecture. I'm not a bio major but I made in A in this course through a lot of studying. Make your own reviews, study with friends, and go to SI sessions. It IS possible :)
This was my second time taking BIO 1330 after taking with a terrible teacher the first time and dropping. I took this course in the summer and this teacher is AMAZING. You can understand her, she goes into great detail and makes sure you understand the concepts--and explains the concepts very well. Extra credit is given on every test. STUDY REVIEW!
Took Bio 1330 in the summer 2 session. If you go to class, take notes - then do your homework this class is not difficult. Best undergrad science pre-req lecturer I've had. She lectures in a way that is clear and easy to understand. She's also very approachable (slow on the emails, though). This is college people, go to class.
Dr. Nierth is AMAZING! I hate biology, and only took this class because it was mandatory for my major, but she is such an awesome teacher that I was actually interested and did well in the class. If you have the choice of taking Dr. Nierth, do yourself a favor and TAKE HER CLASS. If I were a bio major, I would definitely take her classes again.
I took this class in the summer. Not too sure if her Fall classes are different but she was amazing. I loved how she taught, she gave great relatable correlations to help you remember things. I didn't even have to read the textbook because her tests were based from lectures, power points, and study guides!
If you can avoid taking bio 1130 lab with her then do that. This class was absolutely ridiculous. The assessments are so difficult especially since our lab manual contains very little relevant information. There is a lot of unnecessary work in the class.
Nierth was in charge of my bio lab but had an IA oversee the class. It's the luck of the draw whoever you get for your lab instructor. Quizzes due every Monday, over the previous week's lab & the next upcoming lab. Read lab manual in advance before the lab, saves you time. Class is over 2 hours, depends on the lab determine how long you'll be there
I would never take her for biology again. This was my hardest class this semester and as much as i study and memorized i still failed her test. She gives 4 test plus the final they're 80% of your grade. The only good thing is she drops the lowest but that means you have to take the final. If you can try and pick a different professor.
Don't get me wrong, this class isn't easy but it's majors biology - what do you expect?! If you study, you will do OK. Have a B by studying test reviews and going to SI sessions.
Took Dr. Nierth fall 2018 for functional biology. This class is difficult but she goes over the material in a way you can understand. Gives extra credit for each test and for attendance. Super nice.
All functional biology classes are hard but you can tell she is passionate about biology. She really tries to make sure that we understand the material. I would definitely take her again!
This was one of my favorite classes. Exams are fair and application based as opposed to regurgitation of information. Gives basic reviews of the topics that are expected to be known, which most biology professors won't do! Don't expect to just memorize the review for the exams though.
Dr. Nierth is a great professor and definitely wants you to succeed in her class. She won't continue her lecture until she makes sure all of her students get the material, lectures were fun and lots of participating, homework is easy, Proff is fashionable, power points were clear and short (tests are based on power points), lots of extra credit!!!!
Dr. Nierth is a great professor. Since this is a major-specific biology course, it will be difficult, but Dr. Neirth truly wants to see her students thrive. If you attend lectures and ACTUALLY pay attention, you will do well. Dr Nierth will even give you test questions during the lectures, so be sure to write them down, highlight them AND star them
Dr. Nierth is amazing! She really cares about whether or not you understand what shes talking about and she explains things really clearly. The night before tests, she gets on an online chat room for an hour and answers your questions. You dont have to read the book if you pay attention in class and take notes-I didnt read and got an a. 10/10
I absolutely loved this class. Biology can be a very broad subject and Professor Nierth really does a good job in explaining each and every topic in full details to where you can understand it. She prints out everything for her lecture from power points to study guides. She also provides scrantons for exams. She cares about her students a lot.
Take her! she makes bio easy. she only tests lecture content so pay attention. reading is not required. she shows that she really cares and wants you to succeed.
Shes an amazing professor! Shes really caring & breaks things down as if youve never heard anything bio related. It is a hard class, but she makes it doable. You get your grade rounded if you have 80% attendance, but you honestly want to go to get the lecture anyway. There is a lot of homework, but thats all bio classes. 10/10
I took her for Functional Bio and I failed. I had no clear understanding of what she was teaching. She doesn't answer questions very well to make sure that you have a complete understanding, but the SI's were helpful in my class. Modules are very helpful and can be used as extra credit
She talks so fast, and if you zone out for 1 second you might as well leave.
She is very caring about her students. Her test are fairly easy if you study and TRY to understand the concepts and also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities for exams. Overall, fairly easy A if you try and understand what you don't.
She was an amazing lecturer but was incredibly rude and very difficult to access outside of class/her scheduled office hours. She never emailed me back about MANY things and was once annoyed that I came to office hours 5 minutes before they officially started. Again, amazing lecturer but not a great person.
I took Dr. Nierth for Functional Biology. I'm not saying her class is easy but if you study, you can pass. I went to her office hours with questions and she helped me understand the material. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. Nierth is very knowledgeable in her field and is always willing to answer any questions with a positive attitude. She is also direct and straightforward which in my opinion is a great quality. Overall, she is a caring and nice professor.
She is by far one of the best professors on campus. She cares so much and wants her students to succeed. Her tests are heavy but she provides extra credit opportunities if you do extra assignments, participate on TopHat or go to LA sessions. The material was difficult but it is expected since it is bio. She really explains the material well. 10/10.
Professor Nierth is a great professor and very caring about her students, she wants them all to succeed. She provides outlines to help you understand the material and are also useful when studying for her exams. Her exams are material heavy and you NEED to study if you want to pass. If you study, do the HW and quizzes you will pass!
Functional Biology is a difficult class, but Dr. Neirth makes it as interesting as possible. She gave outlines of the PowerPoint to fill out while in the lecture and made the classes and examples as interesting as possible. She was very good at explaining the concepts and gave a lot of extra credit based on attendance. I highly recommend her.
shes super nice
This professor is so amazing !!! I absolutely hated learning biology ( I took it freshman year then I took Bio 2 Ap) Ive never really understood bio until I took her class. As long as you pay close attention to her lectures you will pass. All of her exams and quizzes are based on lectures. She is honestly the best teacher and helped me understand.
Professor Nierth was kind and wanted all of us to pass but her exams are very difficult. Her test questions are worded very weird and tricky to understand, more concept based. Even though she did give extra credit on every exam, it still wouldnt be enough if you want an A in this class, you have to dedicated almost all of your time to bio!
Nierth was an amazing lecturer and explained things very well. The tests were pretty hard but biology is just a hard concept in general. She was overall a very nice professor and I would take her class again.
Her class is okay. You have homework, quizzes, and exams to make up your grade. She only gives extra credit on exams, worth about 5 points a piece. However, pay attention to her lectures, because that is essentially the exam. Final Exam was even more confusing then the regular exams, even though it was supposed to be easier.
I have never met Dr. Nierth a day in my life. In our lab, our IA, Ashlee Jones, was the best! I have nothing to say about Nierth, though.
Dr. Nierth was an EXCELLENT professor. She truly wants her students to succeed. She offered extra credit on all exams, even the final- you just had to do the assignment to get the points. All course material is covered in the lecture and you need to attend class to understand the content. HW can be time-consuming but is a grade. overall 10/10.
Professor Nierth is a great BIO1330 teacher. There's 4 exams, a quiz every week from things in her lectures, and the final is random questions from the exams. HW is mandatory and due the same day as the exam. The exams are easy just listen to lectures and many questions come from the powerpoint. She truly cares for your grade.(LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT!
The teacher was nice and she taught well homework is a good amount but the scientific papers were hard but overall she was a good teacher.
Super nice lady, she explains well the lectures and labs very well. Just do the work and it's an easy B, put effort and it'll be an A.
TAKE PROF NIERTHS CLASS! She is an amazing teacher who really cares for her students. Even if you aren't good at biology she will make sure to explain it her best so you understand you just have to speak up. For exams you will almost always be given extra credit opportunities and sometimes she will remove questions which will bump your grade up.
honestly shes extremely caring but her exams are difficult for me to understand. she teaches well but im used to memorizing rather than following in my head the steps of everything.
Dr. Nierth is a real gem. You can tell she cares about biology and has a real passion for education. She is very patient and gives extra credit opportunity. Review and study guides will be your best friend. Do not memorize information but retain and understand the material and you will get an A! Do not overthink it and take her.
Everything I needed to know for the exams were from her lectures. The moment I paid attention and reviewed her lectures, I was getting As on her exams. The textbook is a bit cluttered with the material but Dr. Nierth definitely breaks it down very well. Definitely recommend!
I loved Dr. Nierth! We had a textbook but it wasn't required, although it proved to be helpful in chapters that I had trouble understanding. Attendance was not required but you got extra points for participation. You can tell Dr. Nierth enjoys this subject and it is very important for me as a student to know my professor enjoys their work.
I took her class for summer 2 and my lab instructor was Israel A. I DO NOT recommend. She might be a lot easier in person but the labs I had to do, made 0 sense and even Israel read some questions and didn't understand it. These labs seemed hand made and it was AWFUL. I got so frustrated I couldn't finish a lab because it was so unclear.
One of the best biology professors at Texas State. She is passionate about biology and lectures are very clear. She talks very fast, but she is very good at explaining all topics. Always willing to give extra help and help all students that ask for it. Gives A LOT of extra credit.
She is an amazing professor! Lots of extra credit and really wants you to learn the material. 10/10 recommend.
I can't really say anything about Dr. Nierth; never met her once or even know what she looks like. I had FYU Sunny for my lab instructor and it was terrible. I hated going to this class and it was always confusing. He was unsure half the time about the actual experiment and always had to leave to go ask another IA/professor about what to do next.
I loved Dr. Nierth, she made my freshman year enjoyable while also preparing me for the way a college class works. She has weekly homework and quizzes that aren't too difficult and will drop the lowest of each. She also has four exams that all have extra credit added to them. Furthermore, she drops the lowest exam. The final is not too bad.
Overall a fine professor but you will need to study the textbook outside of class A LOT. Tests are very in depth. Paper's and assignments in class are extra credit if completed and the only form of extra credit in the class. Assigned HW isn't too bad and a weekly quiz.
Dr. Nierth is a really good professor. Her lectures were very useful and she was good at presenting the information. The unit exams were a little difficult (really in-depth), but the final was pretty easy. She drops the lowest homework, quiz and unit test grades. 3 extra credit points were given for each test if you did the activities in class.
Dr. Nierth is an amazing teacher. As long as you go to lecture you should be okay! I didnt use the textbook, her lecture was good enough for me. I ended up getting a C on the first test but was still able to raise my grade to an A+. GO TO LECTURE, she gives extra credit during class that sometimes must be submitted beforeleaving.
Dr. Nierth is an absolutely amazing professor - she will work with you individually to find the best ways for you to succeed in her class. Truly one of my favorite professors at Texas State!
THE SWEETEST!! Lectures are interesting & easy to follow. She uploads her lecture notes as well as extra videos/assignments on canvas. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she provides a ton of worksheets that can only be done in class for extra credit. She also drops the lowest test at the end of the semester. I wish I could have her every semester!
She's extremely knowledgable and does a really good job engaging the class. I never got bored. However, her tests were a little long and difficult. Do all of the readings and you'll be fine. She's a wonderful professor. Don't miss a class or you'll miss something that will be on the tests.
rarely ever heard from her for my biology lab but required a lot of writing. she is okay
Tutor sessions really help!! you don't need to read the book chapters, just the powerpoints are good. Online quizzes every class day but you get two attempts. lots of pop quizzes towards end of semester. 4 exams plus 1 final. lowest exam grade is taken out of final grade. lots of extra credit opportunities. studying is highly recommended.
I am extremely bad at biology but Dr. Nierth explained the material well. The tests are hard but she does take into consideration how the whole class does. Attendance is extra credit added to your exam. Only con is if you have no prior bio knowledge the class is VERY difficult, but she understands some people haven't taken bio in a while.
I do not know how this professor has any good reviews. She is NOT good at teaching and the multiple low/failing test averages show that. The tests are very hard even if you do really study and there were multiple occurrences where she said something wouldn't be on a test and it was. Worst science professor I've had and I've taken 6 science courses!
Great lectures, which make a tough class like biology easy to digest. Lot of in-class activities that help bolster your grade as tests account for majority. Tests aren't too bad as long as you UNDERSTAND the concepts well, but definitely requires a fair amount of studying. She is very caring and wants to help and is overall a great professor.
Dr. Nierth was a great lecturer. As long as you attended class and did the out of class assignments and quizzes, you'll do well. She was also very helpful during office hours and would go through your tests with you if you ask her.
Dr. Nierth is amazing! She wants her students to do well, and tries to explain things in ways that we understand. Attending class and carefully paying attention to lectures is essential to do well in class. Studying is very important for exams!! For my first exam, I got a 79 and it got higher each time because of my study habits and her lectures.
Had this class online thankfully. There was a lot of information to absorb but lectures by professor Nierth were very good and she is very helpful with any questions! If you take good notes and attend the zooms you can do very well in this class.
I loved Dr. Nierth!!
Here I am sitting as a junior in my spring semester using information that Dr. Nierth taught me I think she is a phenomenal teacher and she will prepare you for upper level bio courses with how she teaches do yourself a favor and take Nierth.
LOVED Dr. Nierth. If she could teach every class at TXST, i wouldn't be mad. She's so kind and she makes the material fun to learn. 10/10.
Biology is just a tough subject with a lot of material to learn. Nierth did a good job of making it as easy to understand and cutting out unnecessary material. She dropped the lowest exam grade and her final was basically the same as the review. Make sure you study and go to her office hours if you need to, she is willing to help.
Prof Nierth is really good at lecturing, she is super engaging and makes the material seem interesting. The content can be difficult, but if you contribute enough time to studying you will do well. McGraw-Hill assignments are time-consuming so don't procrastinate those. Very lecture heavy so go to class!!
attendance is 15% of grade
I loved the professor, but the class is SO difficult. I went to LA study guides to help me understand the exams, which were long and difficult. Luckily, attendance is the same percentage to an exam grade which helped me get an A in the class. You have to study for days and go to class inorder to pass the exams. All bio 1130 are gonna be hard!
A really good professor would definitely recommend her. Attendance wasn't mandatory but she takes it just for her purpose. Her class is very lecture heavy because all of the slides are over the material for the worksheets that she does in class but she answers any questions and helps you if you need it. Gives extra credit so its very helpful.
Nierth was very knowledgeable and nice. Her lecturing was effective, and she was able to answer every question in detail. Fill out the note templates. The content was a lot of memorization at times, but it was made digestible. Good amount of homework and several tests.
Dr. Nierth is an amazing professor! She is very knowledgeable but doesn't always explain things the best. Go to lecture.
Study her slides and you will be fine. GO TO CLASS, her lectures are amazing and she does a great job of communicating a subject hard to conceptualize.
Dr. Nierth is amazing! She is very caring and helpful and wants you to learn. There is a LOT of content, but she teaches it in an understandable way, though it is fast-paced. Information for tests is from lectures, so you need to come to class to understand. She offers many helpful assignments to help learn the material. The tests are kinda hard.
Nierth was my lifesaver this semester. She actually made me understand biology and I even made almost a 100 on the final. I took a hybrid course and found it to be super efficient. She's also fast to respond to emails and is one of the most understanding professors you'd be able to take a class under.
Dr. Neirth is honestly one of the most understanding professors and cares about her students. Not going to lie I was struggling in the beginning because of poor study habits but she really took the time to tell me how to study efficiently. Go to her office hours if you have any trouble with any concept and use the LA study center!!!
Dr. Nierth clearly loves what she teaches and is very organized. She is very kind and wants everyone to excel in her class. I would 100% take her class again.
Dr. Nierth was an amazing prof! While Bio is a hard topic to understand, she made it easier by discussing how the objectives is what we will be tested on. Additionally, she always provided unit questions, which made it easier to understand the unit prior to the exams. Plus, she gives EC for each exam and drops the lowest Exam/Assignment/Quiz/Hwk.
Functional Bio is hard, but Professor Nierth did her best to help us understand the material and provide us with adequate resources. Try your best on the weekly quizzes and reading hws online along with the in-class top hats which all count as a big part of your grade and can help you balance out the hard tests, so STUDY!!
THIS CLASS IS HARD. However, I believe Dr. Neirth is the best option for BIO1330. Her extensive knowledge of the subject lets lectures run very smooth to where you can grasp the information. Go to her office hours, go to outside tutoring with the LA's, read the textbook before lectures.
Guy bio is HARD, It's a lot of info you're constantly learning but Nierth does an okayish job simplifying, she gives extra credit for exams but the only thing I would say is that the exams are very different from the lecture material. She takes the material and overcomplicates it making it confusing on the exam. Just know the material REALLY well.
I 1000% recommend this prof for BIO!!!! I failed bio once and when I retook it with her I made a B. WOULD TAKE AGAIN!!!!
I think she is a great teacher she really helps explain the concepts we talk about and there isn't much work for the class in my opinion, we have some homework due before class and a weekly quiz due on Sunday. You have to do well on the tests tho there is about 50% of your grade, but she drops the lowest one which is great.
she is an AMAZING professor. she knows what she's talking about, and she is very passionate about biology. do not skip the lectures, because she tracks participation and that could affect your grade. do the assignments and study, and you will be fine. i love her.
Honestly, this was bad. I took the honors class, and it should have no exams- but we had 4 total exams plus a final project. exams are 45 questions, and the final is (literally) 100 questions long. it is way too hard to get an A in this class even if you work very hard. she also talks a LOT in class yet it doesn't help with the content. it sucks :(
OMG SO HARD. exams are super hard, and worded completely differently from study material. better off teaching yourself because she teaches so fast.
Get ready for the most boring class of your life. She will sit there and read off the slides once and then give you in-class work about it. Codon learning isn't very helpful, either, since none of that material was ever on the test. Do the work and attend class, and you'll pass.
She's good. Very smart and does mostly interesting lectures. Online homework due before every class, in person tests which were pretty hard but she gives helpful reviews. 5 tests (lowest dropped), 1 cumulative final, online in class work. No attendance but grade lowers if you miss the online work which opens/locks in the middle of class.
she is definitely smart and knows the material... but when it comes to teaching... it's a little hard to fully grasp everything so fast. Exams are way too long (40 questions each + 2 open questions, final is 70 questions) and no extra credit (other than literally 0.1% last day survey). VERY difficult class. she's for you in you're a bio major. 5/10
Dr. Erica Nierth is AMAZING. You can tell that she genuinely cares about what she teaches, and the lectures are very interesting. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will not do well if you skip class. The only bad part about this class was codon learning. This class requires a lot of effort!! I 100% recommend her though!!
This class is a lot but there are points for participation in class and some extra credit. Overall, I liked the class and learned more than I thought I would.
The professor is low key a problem. She takes a lot of tests which is fine but She doesn't care about you at all if it's a big class. She is just there for the money ig.
She is an okay professor and can be nice. She is hyper-focused on attendance instead of lecture. The study guides do not match up to the exams at all. There are 5 exams including the final. All the exams are cumulative. I took 18 credits including this class and she made it very hard.
Good at teaching as long as you're willing to pay attention and review content outside of class.
I'm so thankful Dr. Nierth was my professor for Functional Biology. I was never the brightest with science, but her class was straightforward and engaging! Everything she said in the lectures was on the tests. As long as you review the material every day and utilize the test reviews and LAs, you will do great in this class.
Dr. Nierth was overall a good teacher. 5 Exams consisted of 40/50 3 multiple choice questions. She used codon as her source of homework's and it lowkey sometimes didn't match what was on the test sometimes, but make sure to do them as she takes it as extra points on exam. Remember that bio is hard so study well for this class.
Dr.Nierth was awesome! I personally struggled through the entire semester but going to office hours, the study, and the LA study sessions definitely helped. I recommend office hours if you need more small group help because the class is massive. Grades mainly come from Codon and in class activities submitted through Top hat and 5 cumulative test
I loved her class. She is really good at explaining concepts and if you actively pay attention in class, you barely have to study outside of class. There is also extra credit for each exam, about 2 points. We had to do in-class activites that would count for attendance.
I did not like this class for the sole fact that I do not like cell biology. Lectures were very information heavy and fast. Not a lot of extra credit is given. What will save you is making friends and getting study groups together. Flashcards saved me big time! Overall stressful class and she is cool, but I just do not like her teaching style.
She is the sweetest and such a great professor. I took her honors course and it was so well structured. I was initially nervous about this class but it wasnt difficult because she made the content easy to grasp
Literally the best functional bio teacher. She really cares about her students. If you attend her class, and study the test reviews that she has on canvas, you should pass with an A-B.
She is a great teacher! Bio can be heavy material, especially as an introductory course, however, she is very good at demonstrating and going into detail to help students understand. She takes feedback from the class in order to help us in review. Overall amazing teacher; I wish I could take her for my other bio courses.
She's a good professor but rushes through lectures. She will break things down if you ask but overall, she wasn't good for my learning pace.
This class will weed out the people who are fit to be pre med majors and those who aren't. I walked in as a pre med minor, and walked out picking a different minor because this class was too difficult. She is good at her job but doesn't interact with students much. You will have to study a LOT to pass, so get a good group of friends to study with.
She's literally the sweetest and she cares so much about her students. I was so nervous going into bio, but she explains everything really well in lectures! You will have to study a lot outside of class to succeed. She's so passionate about what she teaches, and it was my fav class this semester tbh. 1000% recommend this professor, she's amazing!!!
So caring and so sweet! When I struggled and scored low on a test, she was willing to work with me during office hours and made everything so much clearer. I passed every test after that one with high scores! I recommend her if you're nervous about bio. Her kind demeanor will put you at ease and she's great at explaining material!
This class was my most difficult, and even with that it's still an easy class. The units weren't too difficult it's just a matter of studying properly. Attending lectures & taking quality notes are the key to pass. There is a textbook, but I didn't read it and still made As on all exams so its not a big issue. Extra credit is given every unit!
Professor Nierth is a sweet lady. She cares about her students and wants them to do well. Biology can be difficult but she offers extra credit for every exam. She does go pretty fast during lecture so try to keep up. I'd say the final is the easiest test bc its all definitional. Go to class and do top hat, it could save your grade. Overall not bad!
