She's very kind and helpful if you're willing to go to her, though it might not be necessary because her lecturing is very clear and simple. There is one group project and four exams, along with four "mini exams" i.e. quizzes, essentially. Go to class because the worksheets she gives help you study and count for a grade.
Prof. Whitaker is pretty good. She talks a little fast and sometimes doesn't explain stuff in the clearest but seriously go to her office hours and you'll get so much help! I should've asked for help earlier and I could have made an A. So many points come from HW, clicker questions, recitation. You can do fairly awful on exams and still get a B
Go to class and get your participation points! This class wasn't hard and Whitaker was a good teacher. She gives web work every week but it's easy. She's really clear and will help you if you ask for it. Actually try in the class bc if you don't you'll end up w a C like me. Plus there's no textbook.
Dr. Whitaker is very clear in her notes and gives great examples. There is a lot of homework (both webwork and written homework sets) but it really does enhance your knowledge of the material and is VERY reflective of the test material. Class attendance is a must as Dr. Whitaker makes her own notes and writes them on the board.
Overall good professor. This is calculus, so you must pay attention and take notes. As long as you can do that consistently, you will do fine with Whitaker. Use the online lecture notes and old exams to get through the tests and homework problems.
Dr. Whitaker was a great pick when it came to choosing my calculus class. She is very lively and will keep you awake for the most part. She tries to make Calculus fun, which she fails, but she tries at least. Pick her
Math 123 is just notoriously difficult at UK. shes the best option. always willing to answer questions in class and clearly explain how she got her solutions. She works fast though so its difficult to keep up. DO NOT SKIP lectures. clicker questions and her notes are very clear. wish examples were more applicable to the homework. exams are hard too
Dr. Whitaker puts a lot of prep into her class. If you show up, follow her lecture, take some notes, and do the online homework, the class is a breeze.
Math 123 is a difficult class but Dr. Whitaker is a great professor. I'm not a big math person and have managed to keep a B all semester. Go to class, do the homework and study the old exams and you should be fine. Join the groupme too if there is one, it can be really helpful if you need homework help
Dr. Whitaker is super awesome at explaining problems in her lectures and does everything step by step. Coming from someone who struggles with math this professor has been awesome!
She is a great math teacher. She does many problems in class and writes out everything. She is very open to questions. Dont know that I would have passed without her. Flexible office hours. She does reef so you cannot skip more than 6 classes.
Go to class. Do the worksheets. Do the WebWork homework and you will pass with flying colors. Ask questions if you need help and she's more than willing to help you. The worksheets count as participation points. If you don't do the worksheets or the homework, you won't pass.
Dr. Whitaker is a great professor and definitely cares about her students. She is accessible outside of class as well. However, she moves a bit fast in lecture because there is so much content. Very entertaining too.
She is overall a good teacher!! I think she seemed to care a lot about the students and made sure they understood the subject. The class in general is tough so don't slack off especially towards the end of the semester! I know a lot of people who thought they were going to get an easy A after the first test, but they ended with a C or didn't pass.
Dr. Whitaker was such a delight to have. Shes very straightforward with her teaching and walks you through the problems step by step. If youre ever struggling shes very good about helping you understand, even if its web homework and you email her 2 hours before its due. P.S. she appreciates it if you recognize her pop culture references.
Dr. Whitaker is a great teacher. Although my grade may not reflect it she is amazing. She is great at teaching the material because she does many practice problems and explains things thoroughly. Take notes in class they will help you do well. Do al the WebWork because that will teach you as well as get you points in the class. She is super nice!
A solid teacher, who was always easy to approach and ask questions on the material. Personally for me, I got the flu and was out for about a month:( However, she was open about making up missed HW assignments. I guess the only real thing I would have changed about the class was the way participation was taken (Reef Polling).
I would recommend Whitaker when taking MA123. Some lectures are kind of boring but she does a lot of examples/REEF questions similar to the ones on the exam. Missing a lot of lectures will set you back & homework is twice a week normally. Go to lecture/recitation, do the homework, and you'll be fine.
Dr. Whitaker is hands down the best Math teacher I have ever encountered. She does plenty of examples/reef questions that are just like ones on the test, and works them out step by step so you know how to do them. Go to class, and pay attention and this class is an A, if you take Dr Whitaker. I recommend her for any math student who struggles w/ MA
Dr. Whitaker is the best math professor I have ever had. If you go to class, do the homework, and study for the exams, there is no reason you shouldn't get at least a B. She is very helpful during her office hours, and makes lecture fun. She is very fair on grading, and is an all around great person.
After my previous experiences in the math department, I was not looking forward to this class. However, with Dr. Whitaker, Calc 4 was my easiest class this semester. Her lectures are clear and you can tell she has put thought into the examples she chooses. Very reasonable and will never surprise or trick you on an exam.
Whitaker's lectures are on point! If you need clarification she seems genuinely happy to help. Generous windows for homework. There is group work every class but she makes it completely painless. Would take her course again without a second thought.
She is a phenomenal teacher, however, it is very evident that she is the head of all of MA123. She often teaches like the students are in middle school. But that doesnt stop her from giving great lectures. Amazing teacher and she is more than willing to work with you. Take if you can
Dr. Whitaker is the best professor I have had for math at UK. I failed cal IV the first time I took it due to poor teaching from the professor. Taking it with Whitaker made the content easy to understand, I didn't even need to open the book. Got a B. Huge change. If you can, take it with her.
She is low-key a hard grader, but after the first few assignments it will be clear on how you should do the work. You just need to show your work for everything and clearly explain what you're doing. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory you just have to have a certain amount of attendance points. lowest test is dropped at the end
She is not the worst teacher but she definitely is not the best. I know majority of people in my class were confused everyday in lectures. All she does are examples and then half of the examples arent even on the homework so its really hard. If you dont understand anything in the beginning of the year, you probably arent going to do well in class.
Dr. Whitaker is the best! If you have to take MA 123 then you want Whitaker, she is very nice and a great professor. She knows her material well and can actually tech it. If you have questions or don't understand something don't be afraid to ask because she will take the time to help you actually understand. She wants her students to be successful.
Dr. Whitaker's teaching style makes content easy to understand, and she even lets you drop your worst mini-exam and exam at the end of the semester. Although she always grades for accuracy (never for completion) it's easy to get points and she is super approachable and willing to answer questions. She can go fast sometimes so be prepared!
Erica is by far the best teacher I've had at UK. She's very nice and she goes over the material very thoroughly. Theres no reason to not get an A/B in this class! Definitely take Erica if you struggle with math
As many have commented, if you need MA 123, you must take Whitaker! She explains concepts clearly and cares about her students learning. Very approachable and funny.
Probably the best professor you're going to get in the math department. People who took other professors struggled understanding the lectures. Weekly homework online. Exams are basically identical to past exams which are provided online so if you study those it's an easy 100%. Going to class is important to understand the content & get full points.
Dr. Whitaker was a helpful professor who clearly laid out the steps to each problem which helped me since I'm not that good at math. If I was able to get an A, you should be able to as well if you study. I like how she just gets straight to the point in her teaching. She is also big on group work which is actually helpful. She's great for MA111.
its such a hard class, everyone struggles but she is a really good professor out of all of the ones that teach MA123
I had heard horror stories about calc 2 at UK. Whitaker is an awesome professor. She has office hours almost every day and if you show up and need more time she is usually more than happy to stay late to help. In lecture she usually has a few jokes up her sleeve to keep the class engaged. She does not put up with people being rude. Highly recommend
I have never struggled with a math class in my life, that is until this class. The problems she goes over in class are SO easy, but when it comes to the homework everything is completely different and so much harder. Also there is so much homework, and it doesnt even go along with the material being learned in class at the time at the same time.
The content itself is fairly difficult. What you learn in class doesn't reflect what you do for webwork. Prepare to spend around 2-4 hours a week at min at the study. This woman also says weird things during lecture.
she is a great approachable professor, i think she is the best in the math department. she explains everything and make it clear mostly, she has office hours everyday so take advantage from that because the material is not that much easy! she really like to help her students even if she stayed too late! highly recommended!!!
I really enjoyed her lectures. You buy a $5 printed workbook from Ricoh, which isnt bad at all. Class is fairly easy but the exams dont have many questions so I ended up making stupid mistakes and getting 70s. I didnt study for them having prior pre cal and calc 1 knowledge.
Dr. Whitaker is overall a great teacher. She explains material in a way that is easy to understand and she is very willing to help. She'll answer questions during class as well as after class or during office hours. Dr. Whitaker wants you to understand the material and she wants you to be successful .
She is such a good teacher. If you have a question, she will be as specific for you to understand. She is accessible almost always and cares for each and every on of her students. She provides many resources in oder to get the grade you want to earn. Taking notes, studying in advance, and asking for help is the way to go to receive a good grade.
This course was online due to COVID19 so that already makes it harder, but the lectures did not really help me learn content. I guess we were expected to learn all the content from videos on Canvas or the textbook alone, because the lectures were just her going over hw questions (which didn't help me bc i would just write down what she wrote down).
Prof. Whitaker is literally the most caring and sweetest professor I had all semester. She is super patient with her students and explains all the math concepts in a way that we can all understand. There is homework due every Tuesday and Friday, and it's hard to get away with not doing it, but I highly suggest taking a class with her if you can!
Dr. Whitaker is a great professor for a difficult class. She's very accessible, and explains all problems she works on very thoroughly. My only complaint is that she does her work very quickly, so be sure to ask her questions when she pauses! Highly recommend her to anyone that has to take calculus. She's lovely.
This was my first college math class, and I was a bit intimidated, but Dr. Whitaker explained things so well. It is worth saying that the class has completely changed since I took it, however I have heard from other classes that she is amazing, and the only thing that I was upset with is the fact that I couldn't fit her MA114 class into my schedule
Professor Whitaker is an amazing professor. I am not very good at math but the way she teaches and structures her class made it easy for me to get an A. If you do the work and pay attention this class should be a piece of cake. She gives practice exams for all the tests which help out a lot and you can do the homework as many times as you want!
Calc 2 is hard but she made it make as much sense as possible
Super nice, dumbs everything down but in a super helpful way. Strongly recommend office hours.
Dr. Whitaker really cares about each student. She always presented content in a very understandable, straight-forward way. If I could take her for every math class, I probably would.
Whitaker is probably one of the best professors I've ever had in terms of her ability to teach material. Everything she writes on the board is what is important to understand and write down in your own notes, and she makes it much easier to learn Calc II. Great professor.
She makes calc 2 as easy as she can, it's a tough class by nature but she's an amazing lecturer.Covers all content needed for webworks and exams. Amazing in office hours.
she is the best, course is hard anyways.
Great teacher.
If Whitaker could teach every class I have to take, engineering would be a walk in the park. Best teacher you'll ever have.
Amazing lecturer!! By far the best math teacher I've ever had. She is extremely smart and can answer any questions you have. Makes hard topics seem like a walk in the park.
Lectures are very easy to understand, her office hours are also very helpful!
Amazing professor & great lectures. Makes calc 2 as understandable as possible. She really wants all her students to succeed!
I will admit, I had her for recitation but I would still recommend her as a teacher for almost anything. She really knows what she is talking about and cares about whether you succeed or not. She also made the class flexible and adapted to what we all were struggling on.
Amazing professor! Would say she is genuinely one of the best math teachers I've had.
3 years in, Dr Whittaker is still the best professor I've had at UK and one of the best teachers I've ever had. I also had a great TA and the combination helped me get through Calc 2 really easily, which is widely regarded as one of the hardest core classes. She explains things in a way that makes insanely complex stuff make sense. Take her class
Makes Calculus 2 so much more manageable. She actually teaches the material and goes through example problems.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. She made a notoriously difficult weed out class into something I truly enjoyed. She has the best way of bringing it down to college students' level of understanding. If you can fit her into your schedule, I highly recommend taking her class. She made me love mathematics again.
Absolutely outstanding! She almost always has time for questions. Her notes are extremely easy to follow. The exams are difficult, but that is not a reflection of her teaching capabilities.
Best math teacher I have ever had.
Whitaker has office hours very often, like three times a week, and is really helpful during them also. honestly, shes prolly the best Calc 2 teacher I couldve gotten, she really is a queen
Dr. Whitaker was an amazing professor. She likes to keep the classes fun and throws in a lot of jokes. Definetly would recomend taking her course.
Good lecturer, hard class. Difficult concepts and lots of work.
Had her for calc 2 she rules just go to office hours, do old exams, and homework, and pray. You'll be fine. Great professor will explain it as many times as needed, very patience, and approachable. (fall 2024)
Dr. Whitaker is the best Calc 2 professor. She is very good at explaining things and she is overall a great lecturer.
Very informative and explains things in a very plain and easy to follow way.
She works everything out by hand and was great and answered all questions
Professor Whitaker is an absolutely amazing instructor! She does out every example on the board and explains things clearly. I needed to go to her office hours only once, but I wish I had gone more often because she is genuinely excited to help her students. She truly cares about all of her students and wants them to succeed. You'll love her!
Took her class last year, but I'm coming back to leave a review bc Dr. Whitaker was that good. But it seems like I don't have to say much bc her 50+ 5-star ratings speaks for itself. But absolutely amazing Calc2 Professor. I've heard ppl say Calc2 was the hardest Calc class. With Dr. Whitaker, Calc2 became my easiest Calc class (aside from Calc4)
Prof Whitaker is extremely talented and cares greatly for her students. She will spend as much time as needed for your success. Her exams are very similar to the past exams, homework and in class materials. Everyone should be able to pass if effort is put in. She is amazing.
Calc II is a hard class, but if you have Dr. Whitaker, it becomes much easier. Very accessible outside of class and ensures students understands the course content in her lectures. There's not much else to say about Dr. Whitaker that other people haven't. Phenomenal professor.
Dr. Whitaker is a very sweet professor who works really hard to make Calculus II understandable. She had fantastic test averages, and really knows the material. Take her for calculus 2!
Go to class and you'll understand everything. Amazing professor.
Very clear in lectures. Provides well explained feedbacks. She's the reason why our class got exceptional scores on exams. Would recommend her class with emphasis.
Dr. Whitaker gives a clear explanation of complex concepts by starting with a review of fundamental math concepts. While the content lectures can be daunting at first, as long as you make the effort to reach out an ask questions, you will be more than fine.
best prof at uky
Not great office hours, but genuinely one of the best math professors at UK. Calc 2 would not be possible to pass without her.
Professor Whitaker shines in lecture. She will work through the problems step by step stopping at every step to ask if anyone has any questions. She is able to break down advanced concepts so that they are easier to understand.
I took this class last semester, but now that I have this account on RMP, I just had to give Whitaker a good review. She made Calculus 2 really enjoyable. Her lecture style is genuinely the best I have seen. Great professor, would take again.
Dr. Whitaker is a caring, engaging lecturer. In MA114, she only uses the whiteboards in the room, working through each step of a problem in detail. This makes Calc 2 extremely easy to understand. Her office hours fluctuate, but if you email Dr. Whitaker, she responds quickly. I would choose to take her class again without hesitation.
I cannot brag on her enough. Her lectures are her walking across the front of the room, writing down the day's content with a marker on the board. No boring slideshow lectures; Her hands-on style is the most engaging & easiest to follow lecture style I've encountered. She is a VERY smart woman, and makes Calc 2 a breeze for those who listen.
There's a reason Whitaker is rated the way she is as well as her revered reputation in the Math dept. Cal 2 is a miserable class but Whitaker makes it bearable. If possible have Hammer as Ta. Whitaker/Hammer duo are unbeatable. UK is screwing up loosing her to Morehead, the Math department is going to implode because of it. Best wishes to her tho!
If you want to pass Calc 2 take her...
