Amazing teacher. She's always excited to be there and loves talking to everyone in her class. She learns everyone's name the first day and is always in a good mood. Plus I learned a lot!
Fun class to take. she is funny which makes it interesting
Very nice and always excited to be in class. Has a tendency to ramble off topic sometimes and has over crowded power points, but good overall!
very energetic. the power points have a lot of info, but she posts note pages with fill in the blanks so it's easy to take notes.
She's a very funny energetic instructor that just loves fitness and good health. She'll make class enjoyable, gets to know you, and even says hello to you by name when you see her. She cares about the student's health and gets to really know you by reading your essays.
Nice teacher. Class is very easy just make sure to the test reviews and you'll be fine.
This was a good class. Everyone has to take this class to graduate so obviously it's not too difficult. Notes are easy because they are fill in the blank. Very energetic teacher. She has reviews for tests and they help a lot to do those. Quizzes online are also pretty easy, just out of the book.
Very funny, energetic, and nice. Lectures were very wordy and pretty fast-paced but manageable. She posts up lecture notes each week to print out and fill in. Online quizzes were easy. There are two portfolios. Uses Qwizdom to get responses from students during lectures. Final exam was alright, more difficult than predicted. Overall, recommended!
She is very hot...but not funny...easy class
Favorite professor I have had.
Erica does does a good job at making a big class well organized. if you plan on getting an A you really can't miss class. She marks attendance off of your clicker, which is a good chunk of your grade. No midterm, just a final. The final isn't too bad, just go over the topics she gave you. P.S. Do Well On your 2 PHP's, it's at least half your grade!
My favorite teacher of all-time. She is always in a good mood, she learns your name if you talk to her. Her lectures are fun but the midterms are a little harder than you'd expect. And she's a hottie ;)
really really really really hot!
Sexiest thing i have ever seen!!!I love her!
She was a fairly easy teacher. My biggest problem with her is that she tried entirely too hard to be funny and just wasn't... My advice, as dumb as it may seem, make sure you take notes, there are things in class that she talks about that are on the midterm and final that aren't in the textbook.
I didn't want to take this class, seemed like a waste of time and tuition since I am fairly knowledgeable about exercise and nutrition. Erica makes it fun. She is engaging, helpful, funny, approachable, friendly, all the good things a teacher should be. Do the reading, take notes, show up to every class, it's easy to get a good grade. Good class!
Boring, tons of facts. She enjoys her job, so it is a little more fun than some boring old dude teaching the class.
It is a required class so my interest level was low, but she managed to keep the material interesting. I did not buy the book and still managed to complete the Blackboard assignments. Unfortunately attendance is mandatory, she uses Quizdom.
This class was a waste of my life. I don't think I learned a single useful thing in the entire course. Maybe this class would be useful to some people, but it is ridiculous that it is required for everyone. That being said, Erica did her best, and she is very passionate about health. I would recommend her over the other instructors for HHS.
Erica made the class a lot of fun. Be sure to print out and take the outlines she provides online to class, they help out tremendously in taking notes and studying for the exams. She uses Quizdoms, so attendance is mandatory. Only skimmed through the text book for Blackboard assignments. I liked the class and learned a lot from it!
Great teacher, passonate about what she does, very easy class if you take all of the notes off the powerpoint.
I knew I was going to like Erica the minute I walked in on the first day and she was playing Fire It Up by Modest Mouse. I had already taken a health class at a different school so I wasn't very excited for this one, but I ended up learning a lot and Erica made it fun. As long as you come to class and take notes, you should be golden.
Erika is great. She knows her stuff. The course itself is repetitive, a bit boring, and straightforward but Erika keeps the ball rolling.
Erica was my favorite teacher this term. She was so real, and she knew that the people there for the most part didn't want to be, so she kept it exciting and active. Be careful of the PHP assignment, start it early cause it takes awhile, and follow what they say in a very cookie cutter way to get full points.
She is very great teacher, she is aware of what she says, attendance is not mandatory, but she gives you incomplete notes that makes the class easier, and you have to come to class to fill it from the powerpoint slides.
she was great!!
1 midterm, 1 final, weekly online assignment, and 1 major project. Super easy class, attendance not mandatory, and she is a very fun and laid back, youthful professor! She's very enthusiastic about the class and that makes it easier as well. Definitely recommend her! I've heard she's much better than past HHS 231 instructors.
Erica is engaging as well as fair and educated. You can't fool her or use excuses-- she won't buy it. You don't have to go to class, but it makes the tests and hw easier. Every Sunday there is a assignment due. Two tests, one midterm, a few big assignments along the way. Not a hard class, just keep up with the work and material (no late work).
This lady was terrible. She treated us like we were in elementary school. Dumbed down everything so it was not relevant. Made ridiculous faces and made jokes that weren't funny at all. Some guys found her attractive, but her personality made her hideous. Obsessed with herself; her lecture slides included a headshot. Super lame.
She was a good professor in that she was clear and easy to listen to, although she has a big ego and that got in the way of me caring what she was saying. Not a hard class at all, tests are fine but with unexpected ratios and exact numbers. Just like every health class before college, but now you're paying for it
This class requires you to read the material in detail. Make sure you read and participate in the discussion board. She will deducted points. Her quizzes can be a little confusing. Also study for the final exam in detail.
I was not very fond of Dr. Woekel at all. She has a large ego and is very proud (stereotypically so) of her Canadian heritage. Her teaching is clear, and as long as you take notes, and complete and actually study the study guides, it is an easy A. Weekly reading quizzes that you don't have to read for, 2 major assignments, one midterm, and a final.
Dr. Woekel is a very energetic and entertaining professor. Music would occasionally be played before class to get people excited and she sometimes treated the lecture hall like a show instead of a lecture, which made it much more interesting and fun. She's a very engaged teacher and really shows care for her students and what she teaches.
Kind of boring sometimes, but I think it's the course itself.
Dr. Woekel gave great feedback! She was very enthusiastic about the course which made it easy to get into. As long as you read the textbook for quizzes and exams this class will be a breeze. I would love to have Dr. Woekel again and suggest her class to anyone.
all recitation
Good, easy class. If you've ever learned anything about health, you'll be fine. You can read the book OR go to class (I'd suggest going to class- you gotta use the clicker). Just keep in mind most of her assignments are documenting things over days, so look at it when it's assigned.
The best professor ever. be careful with the exams. but the class is so fun and she keeps it light.
She's sort of annoying, but its a pretty easy class if you pay attention.
Classes are easy and clear to understand. Attendance is important for clicker points. She is interesting and keeps the lectures going without making them feel long. So long as you pay attention and complete the BeWell assignments , this is an easy class to pass with an A.
Easy class. Don't buy the textbook. I got an easy A by just going to class and actually half paying attention. Midterm and final are based solely on info presented in class. Reading quizzes are all on quizlet. Clicker points in class so you should probably attend.
easy class just go and pass
I absolutely loved her! She made the class so enjoyable and tried to get the students involved.
she uses pictures and videos and is really funny
The class is dumb, but Dr. Woekel makes it alright. Show up for clicker points (or for the cute boys), and fill out study guides for tests and you'll do fine.
Dr. Woekel is a great lecturer and makes a required Oregon State course more than just a re-hash of high school health.
Attendance is mandatory through clicker points. I found her to be very boring and uncaring for each of her sections, as she teaches about 2,000 freshmen a term, so I can understand where she's coming from. Beware, exams are a bit harder than you expect, so study more than you think you need to. Weekly online quizzes as well as 4 assignment.
Class teaches little pertinent and useful information to everyday health, but rather focuses on somewhat arbitrary and very specific facts and vocabulary. Tests were overly specific and difficult, and were more oriented towards tick questions than proficiency and knowledge questions. Assignments are very tedious and unhelpful. Teacher is boring.
Great teacher for HHS231. Had a lot of friends that took this class with other teachers at OSU and most were bad reviews. Dr. Woekel is super upbeat and straight up a great teacher. I learned a lot in the class. If you do all the required assignments and quizzes you can easily get an A even if you don't do well on the midterm/final.
Health was boring, but she's cool. She's super passionate and makes a lot of jokes. As long as you dont miss more than 3 classes it's pretty hard to fail. midterm and final have a lot of information on them.
She is very knowledgeable and can lecture better than most but she takes her content to seriously. I get that the information is important but the very fact that the questions are worded weirdly and depend more on your ability to decipher the meaning shows that she really takes her class too seriously for the benefit of the students.
The recent average for the midterm was a 71.4%. Her tests really go into detail and you have to memorize a whole bunch of worthless trivia; they are much harder than you'd expect. Her Bewell assignments are tedious and take about 4 hours each (there are 4 in a term). She is also less lenient than the other hhs231 profs, and grades harshly.
Erica realizes fully that no one would take HHS231 if it weren't required by the university, so she tries to make it as interesting and engaging as possible without trying too hard. All the answers to the reading quizzes are on quizlet, just get everything done on time and it'll be an easy A.
Okay, so I'm taking a required health class from her and.... its way more difficult than it should be. My study guide is a total of 15 pages long, with a 10 point Calibri font. UNNECESSARY! Other than that she's pretty cool.
Good professor. Very entertaining and knows what she's talking about. Very accessible outside of class hours.
Erica was a great professor and I thoroughly enjoyed lecture every week. She was very engaging and relatable. Make sure and attend lecture to get points for answering online questions!
Woekel turned a class that had the potential of being boring and painful to attend into one of my favorite classes of the term -- I highly suggest seeking out her as a professor. Lots of participation but if you attend lectures and try somewhat in the chapter quizzes you'll do well.
I can't say enough for Woekel, class of five hundred adults, she remembered my name and guided me in the right path to success. Her smile was enough to leave me wanting to complete the class, coupled with her very interactive and engaging lectures.
Dr. Woekel is really nice and gives good lectures but her grading and workload is ridiculous. The weekly reading we have will often have trick questions that you will get wrong even if you read the whole chapter. Our study guide for the final contained over 30 pages worth of information with no guidance of what information would be tested.
Self-obsessed lecturing-style. Disingenuous. Tries to connect, but fails because she's not thinking of students, she's thinking about herself. Teaching assistants also agree; they seem to be much more caring about student success and learning.
The way she gives lecture is wonderful!
Easy class with a medium assignment each week and a medium-big one every 2 weeks
She genuinely cares about her students and is always willing to give hugs and support, but academically and in general. She is such a kind woman.
Her lectures are fine but she gives way too much of a workload for a 2 credit, 200 hundred level class. The weekly reading on tophat has super tricky wording that you will never ever get a good score on it. Also, the be-well assignments will take you hours to complete and seem super unnecessary. This class should definitely NOT be a required course
It's rarely clear what is expected of you.
It honestly felt like I was at a TED talk every time I was in Dr. Woekel's class. Something that also struck me: Even though there were around 500 students in my class, Dr. Woekel would call on students BY NAME. Like, more than half the time she actaully knew the students' names. That really showed me she cares, and made me even more eager to learn
She was really energetic however, the homework assignments that she makes us do have really weird grading and I could never get 100% even though I knew they were right. Also, she grades with a +- system. Which isnt fun.
It bothers me how she grades students on grammar, spelling, etc. on BeWell assignments when I noticed numerous errors in every TopHat chapter and on exams. Also has liberal bias but that's the same with a lot of professors at OSU. Not the worst professor from what I've heard, but she's my least favorite out of the professors I've had thus far.
She was really enthusiastic. This class was way more work than a general education should be though. It is way too content heavy her study guides are 14 pages long. She charges way too much for a book that she wrote and is filled with links to videos. Her homework questions are poorly worded so it is unclear what the answer is.
Very caring professor. Desire for students to succeed was clear. Very lecture heavy as well. Lectures supplement the online textbook, but they are very helpful. The chapter readings take a while, but they are not hard. The tests had a few trick questions, but if you study you will be fine.
Dr. Woekel is extremely knowledgable about the subject which made listening to her lectures fun. There is in-class participation every day and a few assignments throughout the term. Everything is on the syllabus though and if you do the readings you'll get an A. The midterm and final study guides were pretty intimidating but very effective.
Dr. Woekel isnt a bad professor. Her lectures are quite helpful. Her textbook and tests are not so good on the other hand. The textbook is full of grammar mistakes and the midterm and final is just the memorization of facts. Be ready to do most of your work studying before tests. Other than that, Dr. Woekel is a good professor.
Dr. Woekel is great. Her lectures are fun and interesting and she really cares about her students and want's whats best for them.
She gave too many assignments and we had to read a chapter weekly and finish the tophat questions on that chapter. The questions were also tricky from the reading. I thought the instructor was enthusiastic and made the class intriguing but I would definitely take it with someone else who is more reasonable with grading. Also lots of memorization!!
This wouldn't be the most interesting class in your college life, but what you learn from this class would definitely be useful in your life. Dr. Woekel is friendly. She makes things on the textbook easier to understand. If you study progressively throughout the term, the exams should be pretty easy. Easy A, I would say.
this class was like someone hooked up electrodes to your forehead and left the power on for 2 hours a day. Dont take it with this professor. When you ask her for help she literally says read the text again and her test are hard as hell and im a math major so that should say something
The class was fairly easy, homework only due once a week which was nice.
I truly loved Dr. Woekels class. You can tell that she is truly passionate about what she does. The class is interesting and the 50 minutes fly by. There are weekly homework assignments on TopHat, but they go by quickly. BeWell assignments arent hard, just write a decent amount. The TAs are the ones that grade, but they give clear feedback.
The textbook is awful, and shes all over the place but as long as you pay at least a little attention its an easy A.
Overall fine lecture but always sounds very condescending to her students. Some health information seemed off or over-generalized to the point of being incorrect. Will not curve anything just fyi. Overall a pretty easy class
Avoid OSU HHS 231 if you can, take it at LBCC or during the summer. $80 for a textbook filled with links to articles and videos written by Woekel, feels like I'm reading a high school student's health report. Tophat is easy to get around, class graded on 4 major assignments. Woekel is the best prof for this class but still wouldn't take it again.
Dr. Woekel's class is fairly easy and if you show up for all the classes you'll get extra credit for it at the end. Her assignments are really easy, the BeWell's are time consuming but easy. She is full of energy and interesting to listen to. Her tests are a little harder than I thought but as long as you study even a little you should be fine.
Awesome professor! Usually her lectures are fairly engaging, but you have to show up to get tophat points. Lots of extra credit and guidance on exams.
Dr. Woekel is very kind and helpful but for a 2 credit class, the work is just absolutely ridiculous. Be be prepared to spend hours on her BeWell assignment and then have the TA tell you do didnt put enough effort in. Other than that she really cares about her students and brings in a lot of positive energy
I got a C because I missed a few classes and did not do the homework assignments until halfway through the term. Make sure you check in with top hat every day by answering the questions that Erica puts on the board. Attendance is mandatory skip class and you will miss a lot of easy points. I highly recommend checking canvas daily for assignments!
She brings a lot of good energy but I will say her textbook was way overpriced and quite useless for a class of common sense. I think the lectures were a bit overdone and overcomplicated. Make sure to show up for attendance because tophat will easily count towards lost points. Overall pretty easy class.
Awful prof. Get ready to spend your money on TopHat, and then pay for the book that the professor wrote herself. You will not learn anything in this class, but is is mandatory so you really have no choice. The assignments are long and useless, and the exams were open book. Discussion boards are bland and repetitive. Would never take her again.
This class is ridiculously easy, but the professor makes it seem like this is the hardest topic in the world. Like she truly believed this class was hard, but I did not try at all and got an A. She made the material seem way more difficult than it really was, I would not recommend. Take it from the other professor.
Prof. Woekel assigned one of the most expensive textbooks I've ever had... a textbook that was written by her!! Be prepared to spend a lot of money to buy the book on the "TopHat" website. Other than the textbook situation which felt like a money-grab, I found her to be helpful overall with the course material, although a bit boring.
I took this class with tophat and she was pretty easy with the assignments. She also didn't have any quizzes she just had homework every week. Overall pretty easy class and she is very engaging with the class!
Class: Mandatory. Students per term: 780. Terms per year: 4. $76 textbook written by her: Required. This woman is pulling a quarter of a million on book sales alone from this class. One of the greatest collegiate grafts of all time. I'm amazed the school lets her do this. Class is standard 'don't be lazy or THAT fat' (thanks HAES). What a joke.
Easy class if you show up and do your homework. A lot of extra credit opportunities, and everything is through Tophat so it's not hard to find homework. You need to show up to class for note taking because you'll need them for the midterm and final, but everyone takes this class so if you miss a day just text a friend for the notes and you're fine
Dr. Woekel is very passionate which made taking another health class better than I was expecting. She grades a lot based on class participation and clicker questions and has weekly online homework assignments that are bundled with the textbook. She was always looking for student feedback on how to improve the class and was always super nice!
Her BeWell assignments were time-consuming and graded too harshly for what the class is. She is not an easy person to talk to or get along with.
Awesome teacher, always super energetic and easy to understand. Definitely one of my favorite teachers
Dr. Woekel is very kind and manages to teach a very large class of students efficiently. You will likely find it easier to reach out to her TA's or the professor in charge of grading, but you can reach her on weekdays. Class is pretty straightforward and as long as you do the required reading/ homework you'll do well.
Exam questions are very difficult. The types of questions you see on the exam are subjects that she would briefly skim over in class which therefore, wouldn't stick into a lot of students' brains. She's nice overall, but I just wish she wouldn't make the exams so tough. I only got an A cause of the extra credit opportunities.
I have ADHD and her class was great because it was super engaging, but I took it in person pre-covid. She really knows her stuff and teaches it well.
The most authentic and amazing professor Ive ever had. Took her class pre COVID and was inspired by her ability to captivate 400 students at once. Makes learning the subject fun and takes a very real and doable approach to health and fitness.
Class was meh, teacher was meh, it was a standard required bac-core that I slept through, but the part that irritates me is that she charges you an extra $90 on top of tuition for her proprietary textbook software where all your work is submitted. At the bottom of the page, its says "Copyright, Erika Woekel, LLC". That just seems so scummy to me.
A lot of the class is the in class participation questions and the exams, which are very difficult. She's a good teacher and a nice person, but she makes her questions too difficult and the answers too similar so they are very difficult to answer. Especially since it's a Bacc Core class, it's a lot harder than it should be.
I love Dr. Woekel, she is super funny and fun and energetic. Her class is super easy, the chapter "quizzes" answers are on quizlet, and she gives you 3 "major" assignments called BeWell, but they are super easy and straightforward.
Annoying! This class is easy to pass but damn I dislike her a lot.
Her class is extremely easy, the exams are open book making it very easy and the homework is a walk in the park. Class can be attended via Zoom which is great.
I enjoyed HHS 231, Dr. Woekel is very friendly & knowledgable. Although the class is lecture heavy, she does a good job of making them relatable. Weekly assignments are simple, and BeWell assignments can be long, but are easy. Participation is very important by answering live questions during class, and class can be participated in over Zoom.
overall Woekel's pretty good she's enthusiastic and passionate about health and the class is pretty easy. the only downside is there's a decent bit of homework and it's all busywork (and all graded for accuracy). none of it's hard just a little time consuming. there's also extra credit opportunities so make sure to take advantage of those!
A lot of discussions, 10 of them. Online course, you will have to buy an online subscription to do the class. Its like 9 chapters. Ran by a very "healthy" lady if you know what I mean. Each chapter is like taking one of those on the job training tests you take for work or to lower your insurance bill. "Work out, eat right or die" mentality.
Erica is an amazing person and professor! Loved every minute of the class.
This course is essentially just endless busy work. In addition, the professor requires that you purchase her textbook and a top hat subscription which cost around 100 bucks,
Isnt a hard class but does have lots of busywork graded on accuracy. Woekel does offer a zoom option which is convenient, but uses Tophat and you need the participation points. Also makes you purchase her textbook. Very work out and eat healthy focused class, though she is clearly very passionate.
Dr. Woekels class is just what you expect for a health class. It is important to attend lectures and use TopHat for participation points. Some of the assignments require a lot of work that should be done over the weekend. Not a hard class but does require a lot of work between the Assignments and the textbook chapter readings.
Despite being a hard grader on a few homework assignments, she did a phenomenal job on teaching topics, and was easy to contact outside of class. Health class has never felt more complete with a professor like Woekel. Overall a very solid choice for an instructor and I would recommend!
pretty straight forward class, the homework isn't awfully hard, but the midterm and final are kind of confusing
Dr. Woekel is a charming professor with fairly interesting lectures. She seems to be very understanding, and as long as you do the little amount of work assigned, you will pass the class. However, beware as you will have to purchase her overpriced textbook.
Annoying to buy the textbook, but very nice and responds quick via email. The BeWells were tedious but the TA's seemed like they were fair graders and overall the content seemed solid and it was nice that the course and textbook were all designed by her so it's cohesive. Fair homework load but easy A, certainly easy to pass.
This professor does a lot of things wrong. Her textbook, worldview on education, slightly malicious temperament. But even after that her content is concise and meaningful. I entered HHS231 with an open mind and that led to me actually learning a lot. If you apply yourself, this professor will be amazing for you. Even if you have to deal w/ the bs.
Didn't take away much from this class. Graded by participation questions each day, 3 bewell assignments which are tedious, midterm and final, and weekly reading questions which are terrible. Makes you buy an online textbook she wrote for $60 which is a ripoff and lets you do weekly reading questions.
Class was interesting she's definitely passionate about the subject. A lot of reading questions but they're not too difficult. If you actually listen to the lecture you can take a lot from the class.
Dr. Woekel is very knowledgable on the subject and extremely kind. There is a decent amount of work, but not more than you would expect. The first BeWell assignment is pretty long, but the following two get shorter. You do have to purchase TopHat/the textbook, but it isn't too bad. Woekel is the way to go.
This class was so much fun and informative. Something that I wasn't a fan of was the topcoat subscription but other than that I would recommend Professor Woekel! :)
Dr. Woekel is very passionate about this class. It was kind of confusing the way that we should answer the questions in the BeWell Assignments, I ended up getting an F on the first one because I didn't answer them well, when I did it like the example. The exams are a little tricky, make sure to study lots.
Very easy class and super likable professor, not sure how anyone could dislike her. She is very passionate about her class and the content is easy to understand
Though the course itself was easy, Woekel is hard to listen to and seems to have an issue with ego. She also makes some uncomfortable comments.
It is completely unethical that it is required of students to purchase a textbook that was written by the instructor of the course. There is a lot of triggering material throughout the course, but there are non-triggering versions available (why not just use the non-triggering version? idk).
For being a mandatory 2 credit class this professor acts like this class is worth a lot more. There are weekly chapter readings and a few large projects which aren't necessarily hard but grading is nit picky and the content is complete BS. Beware of $85 tophat subscription and a god complex.
She wrote her own textbook, priced it at 85 dollars, and made it required for the class that she teaches. Should be illegal. Also the tests are bs.
there is a lot of content that are super specific topics that are so hard to remember for the final and the midterms. The most nitpicky things that even if you study its hard to answer the questions.
BeWell's are pretty tedious and the lectures were kind of boring but not a terribly difficult class or anything, just not really enjoyable
Wrote her own textbook, then makes it a requirement for the class. My class was completely taught by the TA. The way they teach a lot of topics such as food and body image is extremely triggering. All of my friends who have struggled with eating disorders said it was a trigger for them. Assignments are mainly just annoying.
Good bacc core, some lectures are boring and some are nice and engaging. The exams can be really tedious so I would suggest taking good notes in class and preparing before.
Erica has a lot of TA's so I never got to speak with her directly but in the lectures, she seemed really nice and passionate about what she was talking about. She uploads her lectures on canvas so that really helped me while revisiting my notes.
Redundant, unnecessarily long HW, you need to pay $85 just for software to be able to do the class, tests are phrased terribly (multiple answers are correct for this question but choose the MOST correct one or you'll get it wrong). She seems passionate but it comes across in a strange way. Easy class, just not enjoyable.
Apparently, Woekel thinks it's cool to write her own textbook priced at $85 and make it mandatory. As a teacher, she also says some borderline inappropriate comments with her own opinions about topics. Definitely has a self-inflated ego.
Woekel is a stellar health professor and individual, and her motivational instruction stimulates a lot of excitement, momentum, and passion. Each incoming student benefits from this class material, a great starting point for all. Woekel receives a lot of criticism, but look beyond surface comments and attend class, you will not regret it!
As a core class and two credits, this course is absolutely ridiculous & exhausting. To be clear, it is not difficult, but you are expected to jump through hoops with non-stop assignments and the additional expense of TopHat. It's very invasive too, with the personal questions filtered into hefty assignments.
Sometimes it feels like it is difficult to answer reading and exam questions because of how similar the answers are, and the class is not very engaging, but Erica still does a decent job nonetheless.
Woekel's passionate about health but man, she thinks this is the only class you'll take at a time. Little egotistical. Online textbook is $85 with integrated questions, some of which include external links to other sites on top of presentations you have for the week AND some discussion posts have podcasts you need to listen to in order to complete.
Worst class I've ever taken. 5 weeks on nutrition and 2 days on mental health. Poorly written textbook that she wrote herself that somehow costs about $80. The worst part is that most students have to take this class. Imagine how much money she is making from textbooks alone. Very chatty TA's. Couldn't dignify this joke of class by paying attention
Erica Wokel is a great teacher , in her class, if you get good preparation, you can get a good score in the exam and the Bewell assignment. From the textbook on Tophat, it is not difficult , you can easily understand the question , I like her class and she left me a great impression .
This required course is 2 credits but the unrealistic work load is more in line with 4 credits +. Unnecessary red tape and requirements that consumes far too much time for easy content.
Junior high-level content that she tries to make seem like it's scholarly research. Subject contraindicated, yet she presents herself like she knows it all. The software/textbook was the most expensive I have ever bought and it's written like an amateur. Look out for non-stop trick questions. Harsh grading w/o clear direction.
You're required to buy a $90 tophat subscription for this course, and can't even do attendance without it. The midterm and final are also unexpectedly hard and have trick questions, so beware. Ultimately the lectures were boring and the tophat was overpriced considering you need it to do literally anything for the course at all.
Very basic information contained in an expensive online textbook which is required, and also written by the instructor. The textbook is full of terrible grammar and reads like a rough draft. It is also extremely long-winded to say almost nothing of note. Still, you must read every word, or you'll miss specific answers to the embedded questions.
She feels the need to charge a $110 textbook that she wrote herself which is based off random youtube videos, filled with typos and grammar issues, filled with legitimate pseudoscience, and is required for attendance and homework. She makes a middle school health class into a drawn out social studies and chemistry class combined.
The material is a combination of middle and high school health class. The textbook/tophat combo is incredibly expensive for no reason. The material is nothing special, the whole class feels like a waste of time and money. The professor is nice but definitely over the top. Worst class I've taken at OSU.
There's a lot of reading/busy work but Erica is a wonderful professor and goes through the content in a fun way... tests can be difficult but they're open note/open book and the grading is rather easy for assignments so the class itself isn't too hard. If you put in enough effort, it should be an easy enough A.
Easy enough class, but shouldn't really be a requirement in the long run... good transition into college, Erica makes every lecture fun and worth waking up for. I'd recommend taking it though, don't really understand all the hate, she's great at lecturing. Tests are hard for no reason but open note/open book makes it better. Content is important af
Tears in my eyes leaving her class. Dr. Woekel is a spectacular and passionate professor who is so supportive of all her students' needs. HHS 231 might seem like a stupid class but take it with Erica and you won't regret it.
Dr. Woekel is honestly probably the best option you can take for this class. She's so passionate about it and runs it in the best way she can, given the constraints OSU puts in place. I went every day with a strawberry milk since the energy it bled off compared to the energy levels in class and didn't regret the lectures, even in the morning!
You can't hate a teacher for doing their job and Erica does hers well. The class might be bad but she herself is a wonderful professor with tons of energy to wake you up in the morning! I'd recommend HHS231. It might seem like a drag and the textbook expensive (not her fault) but it has some pretty important content applicable to college students.
Erica is one of the most genuine teachers I've had and she makes her class so fun. Her ability to really get a 500 person lecture hall to tune in to a HEALTH class and participate is nothing short of incredible!
While the course does require an expensive textbook, this ultimately isn't Erica's choice and is driven by the university. Dr. Woekel is a very fun professor with great lectures who's not afraid to tell you how it is. The content of the class may seem like high school knowledge but can be quite detailed and applicable to real life.
Overall pretty easy class with minimal homework. She's supposedly a great lecture giver but I wasn't enthralled by them like a lot of other people were. But she is a nice person and the class itself isn't too bad for a bacc core. The final had a few pretty tough questions but it's fully asynchronous, so open notes and all that good stuff.
Easy class as long as you do the work. What struck me most was how caring she was of her students experiences and struggles--she made sure to have alternate assignments available for the nutrition sections and focused on alternative nutrition strategies over dieting.
Erica makes any boring content in the class very applicable to irl and is so kind regarding triggering topics. She connects content to real life issues and is very inclusive and accomodating of people who may have eating disorders, are in the LGBTQ+ community/other minorities such as race, or are struggling with mental health. Lots of work though!
Attendance was mandatory and there was a bit of reading, but overall the coursework was very light and Woekel is a fairly chill professor.
If you have to take HHS231 and you do, take it with Erica. She's amazing
Woekel's great. Love the way she lectures.
The professor wrote the textbook and still made us pay for it, It was required to buy with the top hat website so you couldn't find any cheaper options. The book over analyzes every aspect of health. The midterm and final had so many spelling mistakes it seemed like it was written by a 3rd grader and made the questions hard to understand. Bad class
The textbook is expensive but it has important content and I LOVE the way she lectures. Content is really easy to understand and she's really really nice.
erica is a nice and engaging professor. the textbook is expensive and some parts are in depth for no reason. the midterm and final are confusing and all questions are application based, but it's open note. top-hat is used in class, for homework and the textbook. the homework is hard to get 100 on but in-class its participation based. decent class.
I don't understand the hate at all. The textbook is expensive, yes, but that's not in Erica's control at all. It's the university. Erica gives out a LOT of extra credit and the assignments are relatively easy which makes up for the difficult test. Content is all applicable to real life and Erica goes the extra way to make her classroom inclusive.s
Dr. Woekel is always in a good mood and is energetic about everything she teaches. Never has a bad day and puts her students first, prioritizing their wellness. You would think HHS231 would be a drag of a class but I really liked going to class every day. Exams are difficult but open note/open book so as long as you do your homework, you're gucci.
I appreciate Dr. Woekel for providing me with course materials when I could not afford them. HHS 231 has a heavy workload for a 2-credit class. The assignments ask for extremely personal information. The graded textbook questions and exams were unnecessarily misleading, leaving you playing semantics rather than testing your knowledge.
Dr. Woekel is sooo funny and sweet. Even in a 500+ lecture hall, it's clear how much she cares about her students. There is a lot of work but if you manage your time well, it's not too bad. Test questions are tricky but there's almost 7% extra credit that makes up for it. And if the textbook is too expensive for you, she will help you! I promise!!
This woman is the definition of inspirational. She comes to class with so much passion and makes HEALTH of all classes exciting. The textbook is a bit expensive but if you cannot afford it, talk to her. Dr. Woekel is super sweet and will understand/waive the fee! Honestly, she made my transition to OSU pretty great. Good bacc core!
Professor Woekel makes this class engaging despite the heavy workload. The textbook can be pricey, but she offers extra credit to help make up for it. I found unstuckstudy super helpful for quiz prep alongside the lectures.
Dr. Woekel is one of the most passionate professors at the university. She goes above and beyond when teaching and connects content to real life examples. Had her for HHS231 and now KIN462. Fantastic both times!
Professor Woekel was an amazing teacher for Psychology of Sport & Physical Activity. She provided clear feedback on all my assignments, was engaged in group discussions, and replied quickly to emails. I highly recommend her!
