Great teacher, made stat interesting
No Comments
This is a pretty tough class. A 'B' is pretty easy to earn but you do have to work for an 'A'. He knows his stuff but cannot quite put into good teaching (goes pretty fast and is a little vague). He's pretty sympathetic towards problems but is pretty rigid about grades.
Studer-Ellis demands a lot from you. He is a stat teacher so he believes in equality for all of his lecture classes. This means NO curve at all. If you have an 89.9 you get a B, so be prepared to work! TAs are really helpful. Make sure to go to their office hours for help with questions!
Good guy, but the class itself is no good....if you don't mind doing work, this is the teacher for you.....
He's a good professor but the class itself is really hard and requires alot of work, time and effort outside of class. I recommend taking this class in a winter or summer term by itself when you can focus on it more or maybe during a semester where your classes aren't that hard. He's very exact/on point about grades you get what you earn 79.9 is C

I did well, but I think since Fall04 he made it harder. He was a good prof. I took AP Stat in HS so that helped make the class easier. But do the work and you'll be fine. Text is pretty useless.

One of those classes where I'd like to badmouth the teacher about getting a B and not an A, but he is really a pretty good teacher and a good guy. He will help you out but will never break any rules to do so. Tests are hard, and attending class is obligatory (I dont say that often). Also requires a good deal of studying... but not too much hw.
Statistics is not my favorite subject but Studer-Ellis made it easy to learn. Make sure you go to class and you'll do fine.
excellent teacher though he expects a lot from his students

Great teacher!! Kind of a hippie. He tries to spice up every class with a few lame jokes. Best of all he is VERY accessible during his office hours and will take the time to stop and explain something that the class doesn't understand. Don't bother buying the book, especially now that he has a "course pack" with his notes from the entire semester.
Great teacher. Gives extra credit and many other assignments to help grade. A little quirky, but entertaining. Definitely recommend his class. Wish Studer-Ellis taught more classes.
He is the man. Works very hard to make sure everyone understands the information, not just so people can pass the tests. His somewhat odd personality makes stats much more interesting. If you go to lecture and pay attention this class should be an A.
Excellent professor. Good teaching style, euthusiastic, and very helpful when needed. Highly recommended.
Best teacher I have had so far at UMD... wants to help everyone pass the class at all costs. Gives tons of extra credit. Go to lecture and take good notes and then go to the discussion to get the easy 5 points for completing a paper the TAs give you the answers to. Don't come late or leave early... he freaks out!
He is the best prof. I've had at UMD, he is so fun and really likes the subject. Tests aren't too hard and you get to bring in notes sheets which definitely help. A tip for the final: he uses LOTS of problems word for word from the previous exams that semester so study and copy them on your notes sheet if you can. Overall, he's an awesome guy.
Studer-Ellis taught the best class I've taken at UMD so far. He was really into it and that was portrayed well. You have to go to lecture to fill out his course packet. He's very helpful if you go to his office hours. He offers a lot of extra help sessions. For exams, DO the practice problems. Take the time to study and the exams are easy.
THIS GUY IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! YOU SHOULD DEF TAKE HIM DURING YOUR UMD TENURE
Studer-Ellis is one of the best teachers I've had so far here at UMCP. He makes you work for your grade, but he is an excellent teacher and very helpful if you don't understand something. Overall, if you go to class and pay attention, do the assignments and study for tests, you should get an A. He also gives lots of extra credit :)
Best teacher so far at College Park. As mentioned in previous reviews it isn't easy, but there is certainly enough opportunity to obtain the needed info if you don't understand it the first time in class. Studer-Ellis is awesome.
I loved Professor Studer-Ellis. I had an 8 am class but he woke me up quickly with his energy. Stats really became an interesting class with him as my teacher. Extra credit is also very generous. My favorite teacher at UMD.
Studer-Ellis has a great paaion for teaching and getting students involved. A great class made even better by his teaching syle. He really supports the students and makes us think to get the answers we need. Stay on top of the material and DO the practice problems and you should do great in the class. p.s. He loves it when you ask questions.
He is definitely a great professor. Truly, this course isn't for me, but as long as he sees that you are trying hard, he will make sure you pass. He's extremely passionate in helping students and communicates well. The material is hard for some and easy for others, but overall, I DEFINITELY reccommend his class. One of the best here!
Yeah, he is a nice guy and gives you extra help but he is out to trick you on his exams. They are hard with questions that you don't necessarily ever see beforehand. He is anal and will take off credit wherever possible on his exams even if it looks like you got everything right. Irritating and corny and thus even more irritating.****ty class.
Enthusiatic teacher. Need to attend all discussions to get easy 5 pnts and turn in hwk. Exams sort of tricky. Lots of extra credit. Can use 5 note sheet (front and back) for final exam. One note sheet for other exams. Can write anything on them.
AWESOME TEACHER! definitely take him, you'll undoubtedly end up with a B, trust me
Great teacher, knows his stuff, the trick to getting an A is just to do all the practice problems and look over old exams, if you do this you will have an A. To recieve an A on the final all you need is to write down old exam questions because most are on the exam verbatim. This class will make you work but it is not difficult.
He is extremely friendly and actually wants you to learn the material. You need to respect him though or he gets angry but he can be extremely friendly and helpful as long as you try.
he is an excellent proffessor!!! he wants you to learn and understand the material thus he is very clear in his lectures and will help you at any time......he also tells corny jokes which still makes me laugh.. i very much liked his class..and as long as you go to lectures and discussions, you will get an A...p.s. he gives TONS of extra credit!!!
Definitely a good teacher. Really knows his stuff and is always willing to help a student out as long as its reasonable. His exams are okay towards easy as long as you did some studying and you look over old exams, and discussion problems. you get a page back and front of hand written notes for every exam and 5 for final. show up, understand, pass
horrible person. Teaches well, is helpful, etc, but is a horrible person.
Best professor ever!!
really really disturbing personality. you get the impression he's on the edge 60% of the time. the first few ppl that come late he does thsi fake laugh, and then after 6 or 7 ppl come he flips out(i had an 8am, its going to happen) he makes 26 different versions of his exams, super paranoid, not clear. some people love him. personally i didn't
A very quirky man. Tells many corny jokes, but at least keeps you awake. Very loud. Clear and repetitive with his lectures, he really makes sure you understand the material. Gives lots of extra credit (in class extra credit)
Easy course as long as you attend class, and especially if u toke ap stats in highscool. Minimal studying outside of class and he does offer extra credit, but no curves. Students tend to do their worst on the first test so make sure you understand it
He is one of the most intense professor's I have ever had. The course is not easy bottom line. Especially for those who have not taken any form of stat prior to his class. Although his class is very challenging, he is an amazing professor, and is always willing to help student learn material both in and out of class. Do ALL of his practice problems
Studer Ellis is a really good teacher because he makes you work hard and its worth it at the end because you really know it. Do every problem he gives you. He def has tricks up his sleeves when it comes to exams so be prepared. The final included SO many repeat questions from previous assignments. Moral of the story: not easy but not impossible.
Very good professor, clear and thorough in lecture. He knows the material extremely well and has a freakishly good memory. He gives excessive extra credit, which unfairly helps students that do not know the material get a higher grade than they deserve. The class should be very easy if you show up to lecture and pay attention.
yea yea hes a good teacher and all that, and gives extra credit. but he's plain heartless when it comes to grades...TWO points to an A-(538 when you need 540)A- and he didn't give it to me because he "JUST DOESN'T BUMP"...for that, he just doesn't cut it ...
GO TO CLASS! i never took stat before, and i got an A-. he is fair. he gives extra credit in lecture. do his practice problems, you'll see them again on exams!! very strict about grading, no curves or rounding up. very fair class, no reason to not get A/B if you do your share.
Studer-Ellis lectures his class with enthusiasm but doesn't like when people leave early. His tests are difficult because you have to move quickly to get them done while at the same time being careful not to make small mistakes. He is helpful and puts in a lot of overtime to help you succeed. My TA-Mendoza was helpful. Don't ever miss class/disc
Studer-Ellis is a really great teacher. He knows his stuff and is very organized. All of the material and exams are pretty straight forward. Go to lectures, it'll help a lot!! It was a pretty tough class but if you try hard you can do well. He hates it when you leave early/text during class but that is pretty disrespectful so he has reason.
He's a great professor. Material is very extensive and plenty of formulas to know. BUT you get to use note sheets to write whatever you want.
You have to go to class and discussion. Homework every week. Very passionate about subject. Tests are difficult but fair.
Best teacher ever...attendance isnt mandatory, but you HAVE to go in order to know anything.
He is the best professor I have had at UMD. Not only is he crystal clear in his explanation of the material, he also goes over many examples to ensure you understand it. He is the sweetest, most caring guy I've ever met. He's really cute too and he looks so delicious when he wear his three stooges tie. If only he were gay...oh well, a guy can dream
He is among the best professors at the University of Maryland, but if you are not a math person, you may want to consider taking another course. However, if you are up for a challenge, I highly recommend taking this class.
Probably one of the most enthusiastic/high-spirited/engaging professors in this country (and no, I'm not exagerating.) At 8AM, he keeps you focused and engaged in the material...too bad he's leaving Maryland...he's the best!
no textbook. everything you need is in the package he wrote for this class. Just study the package and homework you'll do fine.
Great teacher, provides help sessions every week. The class is easy; however, your grade is based on your position on the class so not knowing can be stressful
Stats is hard. But Erich is super engaging and really good at explaining things. The class itself is hard but he's a great teacher.
Erich is definitely one of the best teachers at the University of Maryland. He is super enthusiastic and engaging, and he makes a very difficult subject as straightforward and easy as he can. He even gives you the notes for the semester instead of a textbook with fill-in-the-blanks. Don't take BMGT230 without taking Erich!
Erich was a great professor. He really cared about teaching and made an effort to be available to students. He was very knowledgable and often held extra help sessions to review. The material was hard and you did have to study to do well in the class. However, he did provide a course packet that was very useful throughout the semester.
The class itself is very difficult, missing more than one or two lectures will probably hurt your grade a lot. Erich does his best to keep statistics as entertaining as possible and he is very good at answering questions and makes tons of resources available so that you can get a good grade in this class, but you really do have to work for it.
One of the best professors. Inspirational, caring, knowledgeable professor and just a great person! No book, only his printed notes.
The material is difficult but he's a good teacher. Other than studying before the exam and the homework's due on Friday, it's not too much work.
Erich is an amazing teacher who is dedicated to seeing his students succeed. That said, this class is very tough and requires you to practice alot outside of class. Erich makes the material interesting though and I would go with him if you have to take it.
The professor makes you feel like you are in a class of 20 students, teaching the material clearly and making it a comfortable environment for a student to ask a question. He also makes a $20 book which is all you need. If you make the effort by going to lectures, doing the hw, and going to discussion, youll do well.
Bstat is a really hard class that I struggled with (and had to take twice) but as a professor, he is really enthusiastic and engaging so that was nice to see. He's helpful if you go to office hours with any questions. Overall, hard class but he does his best to make it enjoyable
Erich is an awesome professor. Makes the lectures enjoyable and gives you everything you need to succeed, from the $20 textbook he wrote to old exams/practice problems. Class is hard and you have to work for your grade, but he curves the class at end based on how you did against your peers. Required class for basically everyone who takes it
This man literally changed my life. His lectures are amazing and he teaches everything so well. He's so accessible outside of class and helps everyone out as much as possible. He really cares and I loved this class so much. The exams can be a little tough, but if you practice, you'll be fine.
Best professor on this campus, no questions asked. Just make sue you go to lectures or you won't understand the material.
Erich is the best professor I've had at UMD! Bstat is already and incredibly hard subject, but Erich makes it bearable. He really cares about his students and wants you to do well. There's one homework assignment a week and three tests and you get a note sheet for the first two and three for the final. If you have to take bstat take him!
This class is by no means easy, but Erich is one of if not the best professor in the Business school and he makes the class much more doable. He is always involved in lecture making the class somewhat interesting. He is also willing to help any student with any question. 10/10 would take again.
He is actually a great teacher, always filled with energy. The class itself ain't easy; however, he'll do everything so people can do well in tests and homework. If you need to take this class, I recommend him 100%.
Great professor, genuinely cares about the students. Created a packet full of only material required for the class, so no text book needed. Lectures are engaging and he is willing to answer any questions you have. He even holds a help session to help students with homework outside of class every week. Tests are fair and match the material taught.
He's one of my favorites! The class was hard and a lot of work, but Erich was a good lecturer and he was very approachable.
As other reviewers said, Erich is probably one of the best professors you'll have at UMD. If he's an option for ANY class, take him. He's super engaging and really wants to help his students.
Erich is a very good teacher, his lectures are the best. And he offers extra help for students, willing to answer questions after class. But it is a hard class, you have to go to class in order to understand everything, do the homework, and study a lot for the exams.
He is THE most caring and responsible prof I have ever seen. He is a humorous person and the way he teaches is amazing. The class is not easy( It's stat so you know) but erich makes what we do much more interesting. Although the average exam scores are pretty low, he gives a lot of curves.
His lectures are kept entertaining by him jumping around the class. He teaches the material well and is responsive to students concerns. Tests are difficult, but manageable if you go to class. He created his own textbook and remembers every single detail and number from it (pretty impressive). Gives many resources to help students who request help.
He is a great professor and really knows what he is talking about. There is no textbook, but you must purchase a paper packet with everything you need for the course. The material can get tough, so you need to put in the work. No laptops allowed in class, so if you miss you better get the notes from a friend.
You only need to buy a course packet which costs about $20. He teaches from the packet, notes are basically filling in information he writes on the board and any extra practice. Don't skip lectures. Amazing professor who teaches incredibly well and makes statistics easy even if you haven't taken it before in high school or for AP credit.
If you don't come to class and take notes in his textbook you will not pass this class. Not much work needed outside of class besides the weekly homeworks which are not *too* difficult
The class is hard, but he'll work with you to clear up confusing topics. Like most 300+ student courses, grading is done on a bell curve, with the mean being roughly around a B-. The first exam had the lowest average (63), so make sure you take that exam seriously. If you do well on it you'll basically have a cushion for the whole semester.
Erich is a hilarious professor who really cares about statistics. He also explains things very well so it is easy to understand, and if you don't understand you can always go to his office hours or talk to him before and after class and he gets excited to answer your questions. There's a huge curve so don't worry too much if you do bad on the exams
It's a hard class and personally I found stat to be really boring. But he is EASILY my favorite professor, he's so energized and made me actually look forward to his class, even at 930 AM. He's a bit on the weird side, but most people learn to love it, and he truly cares about his students
Bstat is not an easy class, but he makes it as easy as possible for students. He is super interactive and energetic, and he makes it easy to follow along. Attendance is not mandatory, but I definately reccomend going since tests are the majority of your grade.
Great professor who is very knowledgable and genuinely cares about the students. Hes very energetic and makes a rather dry subject like stat enjoyable . Tests are worth a large percentage of your final grade, quite difficult, and have low average but the class is curved. Study hard for the tests and do the practice problems and practice exams.
Show up to class and friday discussions, do the homeworks, and with the end of the year curve you will be more than prepared for the final.
Best professor I have ever had. Very energetic and knows everything in the course packet. Do the exercise set and activity sheets weekly! THEY MATTERS!
I LOVEEEEEE ERICH he was one of my favorite professors thus far. He has a great personality and does not fail to keep the class engaged. If I could I would take any other class that he teaches. One tip though is to make sure you pay attention ask questions and DONT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS!!!
Erich is the best. He really cares and wants to do everything he can to help. Lectures arent mandatory but definitely helpful since your class grade is pretty heavily focused on exams. Content is really tough but if you try your hardest you will probably pass.
Solid professor. All the notes follow along a course packet which is $25. No textbook. Posts completed notes after class but it's still better to go if you can. Weekly HW but doesn't take long and he offers help sessions. He lets you have a front-and-back cheat-sheet with you for exams. Seems to really care about students. Exams are fair.
Take his class! Definitely one of my fav professors. The content was hard but if you show up to class and go to discussions, you will be fine. Do not skip!! He also allows you to make a note sheet for each exam. He really tries his best to help students and is very caring.
He has such an energetic personality and he's a really nice guy, always willing to answer questions and help. Definitely go to lecture as much as you can. I would 10/10 take his class again
he's a ball of energy that will wake you up. cares about students, or at least he appears to. 230 is a gateway course, so it is meant to be straightforward. it's ap stats all over again. he teaches methodically through his own simple course book. 3 long exams - though you are allowed a crib sheet.
This guy is a living legend. He teaches an extremely hard subject but does it very well. He teaches every class with a bunch of energy and positivity. He's even implemented little things to ease out the hardest concepts. Gave an amazing speech before classes closed for COVID and was the most accommodating out of all of my teachers.
Mr. S-E is a very good professor. I do not particularly like statistics, but it was still enjoyable because of the aura he gave off. We had all recorded lectures, but they were very lively. The course grade is heavily weighted on exams, though. All of the lectures follow a course packet. Anyone can do well if they watch the lectures and study.
Erich makes this class easy, even though it should be hard. I took this class without any stat experience and did great. He is super high energy and clearly very passionate about the subject. He makes sure to highlight practical career applications and generally just makes the class worth attending.
Professor Studer-Ellis was probably my favorite professor this semester. He put lots of effort in to help us understand the content. He went above and beyond to make additional help videos for the students. His quick wit and caring demeanor made me enjoy his class even more. His music taste was a 9/10.
He is an amazing professor! You have to take BMGT230 with Erich! This is the best class I've taken at UMD so far!! You will definitely learn the material with him.
Great professor! really has his own personality that you even get to know through online courses. Tests are pretty hard but he curves your overall grade at the end. Three exams in total and problem sets every week
He is one of the elite professors UMD has to offer. He really loves what he teaches and made distanced learning really do-able. He is always clear with instructions. The class is heavily graded on three tests(we had one retake for each of the three). There is a course packet that is about $25 but is very useful. Make sure to listen to everything.
Professor Studer-Ellis was great for business stat. Your grade is basically made up of three tests, but you get two tries on each test and they're very similar to the notes. He also gives a pretty big curve at the end of the semester. Although we were online and couldn't meet the professor, he seems like a great guy.
Erich prepares you well for the class. Buy the course packet or print it yourself, it will make taking notes and understanding the material so much easier. 3 exams including the final, open-note, two attempts each, worth 80% of your grade. 2 weekly problem sets, one with a group. He curves end of sem. based on the class, 84 was an A- this fall.
As a student, understand how easy it is to find yourself in a hole with this Professor both online and offline. Examinations are your god in this class, with them determining 85% of the course grade. If you fail one, you will suffer to get your grade up to pass this course and this Professor will give you a false sense of security with his attitude
When I took this class, it was online, asynchronously. He goes into a lot of depth, so the notes were always clear. I will say that if you didn't take stat in high school, you'll need to work a lot harder. Take advantage of the practice exams he releases, but be wary that in-person and online are different. He is strict about excused absences.
Statistics is a difficult subject and learning everything asynchronously makes it even tougher. Very test heavy and a lot of homework.
Erich is a great professor bc he is able to make a hard topic easy to understand. If you take the time to watch every lecture, the course will make sense to you. He posts help videos too that get you through the exercise sets. 3 exams and weekly exercise sets, so not a lot goes into your grade. HUGE curve at the end of the semester.
He makes a horrible class quite entertaining, even through asynchronous lectures. He's a really funny guy. I would've given him 5 stars if it was a synchronous class, although it sometimes got hard to reach him when I had questions or comments. Great professor overall.
He's an amazing professor who somehow manages to make a very difficult class doable. His enthusiastic attitude was very helpful in getting me through the lecture videos and constant stream of new topics. The class is test heavy with 3 major exams, but there's 2 opportunities for each and he keeps the higher score. There's also a generous curve.
Entertaining guy, but content can be a little difficult. Online, the final grade consisted of three exams and weekly exercise sets. Decent curve, brought my B- to a B+. He gives you all of the resources you need for success. An A is very attainable.
He provides lots of resources for the weekly homeworks. If you go to lectures, discussion, and put in the work doing well is definitely possible
He made us feel as if we were doing great in the class and then his exams rolled around and we were apparently not doing well. He told us that the curve will not be as generous just because we are not online even though class averages have been like the past couple semesters when an 85% was curved to an A. Exams are hard.
Erich is a great professor. He really knows the material in his course packet and goes through every page in detail. His review videos that help with the homework are a lifesaver too. As long as you get the notes from either attending class or his posted notes the homework is easy too. Only 3 tests, each one has a retake and highest grade is kept.
Erich is the best professor I've ever had. He really cements key statistical ideas and makes SURE everyone understands everything he's saying; he answers every single question very thoroughly and politely, no matter how stupid the question is. The "course packet" is followed to the wordhe goes over every single part in class, so definitely attend!
This is the best math teacher I've had in a while. Goes over everything in perfect detail and makes sure you know what you are doing before you turn it in. There is no reason you should not get at least an A-
Professor Studer-Ellis is a great man and is very funny but does not do a fantastic job at articulating what he teaches in class into the problems that he gives weekly and on the exams. I like him a lot but I would honestly not take him again.
Studer-Ellis is a great teacher and at least 70% of the class will get at least a B-. The lectures aren't mandatory but if you want to get a good grade, I would highly recommend going to them. My only complaint about him is he is super cryptic about how he grades the class. Overall, you will need to work hard to get an A in this class.
i know i got a B+ in this class after the curve, but this was after a lot of stress and tears throughout the semester. Ur gonna suffer unless youre good at math, the exams were ridiculously hard compared to the exercise sets and he REFUSED to upload recordings of the lectures, which all my other profs did bc people would be isolating from covid.
Erich is a character and definitely keeps class interesting but is big on no phones. The class definitely isn't easy because exercise sets didn't match the exams at all which were more difficult. But he changes the boundaries of the grades so in the end, you can end up doing good. My 83% became an overall A- for the class due to the boundaries.
Apparently nice person but extremely difficult professor. PROS: trying to make the class entertaining, posted help-review videos for homework. CONS: Not enough practice questions, DIFFICULT Exams (not connected to the coursework), useless homemade course packet (interesting concept but difficult to understand without attending lectures).
Stats is a boring subject for me. However, Erich made this class vibrant. You will do fine on the exercise sets as long as you attend every lecture. There are 3 exams in that class that are ridiculously hard in comparison to the exercise sets. I am glad the generous curve helps us with the grade.
Erich is a great, entertaining prof. That being said, his class is definitely not easy! Strive to get full points on the homework and section work because the exams are challenging. You will have to put in the work during lectures and outside of class to fully understand the concepts. The open book policy won't help you if you don't study well.
Excellent professor who is super passionate about what he teaches. Class is entertaining and he explains things well. Exams are not too bad because they are open note. Don't skip class though because he gets through a lot of material each class.
Erich is a great professor and his lectures are really fun. He does a really good job of making sure everyone learns the material. However, his exams are open packet (notes) which means they're much more difficult.
This class is really hard, but the professor tries really hard to make it easier for everyone else. There is a curve at the end and all exams are open note.
Great professor, amazing lectures, If you cant learn stats from erich then u prolly cant learn stats at all. Exams are not that bad they correlate homework and discussion sesh sheets. study like 2-3 hours a week and you'll do fine
he is such a rule follower. i personally disliked him as a teacher bc he went so fast in lectures and none of the material actually made real life sense- he just taught it. the material is very heavy and you must put in a lot of time to get a good grade in his class. you have to take him bc there are no other professors. worst class this semester
I did not like this professor at all. He was incredibly strict about his university policy and when I was experiencing an obstacle in my year he was less than accommodating. His grade curve barely had me passing. He tried to make his lectures fun but it just bothered me. He seems like a good guy but in my books wasn't a helpful professor.
Professor Erich is not the professor you want in order to learn BMGT230. If you can take another professor, please do. Professor Erich is highly strict and the class is fully graded on exams and the exams are the most difficult ever. Professor Erich is not empathetic at all and is famous for failing students for the tiniest mistake they commit.
He's a very polarizing professor and I am not someone who jived well with him. I thought his behavior in lecture was obnoxious and a waste of time. His lectures would include extremely elementary examples, but his homework assignments and exams were very difficult. His practice exams are not helpful and do not apply to his actual exams
If you are not good at math already this class is going to be hard. He is an entertaining teacher and he has a big grade curve at the end of the class so as long as you pay attention and try, you will most likely pass. Just be ready to put the work in.
If you have taken a stat class before, this will definitely be much easier for you. However, if you took AP Stat and mostly relied on your calculator, this is different as you do not use calculators at all in class, but you can on exams. Exams were pretty straightforward and curved generously. Discussion sections and homework are helpful.
Erich's BGMT230 class is challenging but engaging. While the exams are tough, the lectures and discussion sections are helpful. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for test prep. With dedication and the right study tools, you can succeed in this course.
