Prof. Huston is awesome!...some may know her as Prof. Cederstrom. She is very helpful and friendly. She has wonderful office hours and review sessions. She presents the information clearly in class. I would recommend her to Anyone!
do not take. despite all the good things you hear about her teaching, if you want to be graded fairly (like a chem 120 class, and not chem 320), take a professor who doesn't mistake a gen-chem class for o-chem. she's also kind of mean during office hours.
Awesome teacher!!!
she is very good at teaching. for the first time in my life, i understood what i was doing.
Ericka is always willing to help, she makes herself available. She explains things very well. I would definitely recommend Ericka as a teacher to take for Organic Chemistry.
Dr. Huston is very nice...I'll give her that. Her biggest flaw is that she is WAY too picky about her tests...having to know a million mechanisms to exact detail really sucks.
Erica is very energetic and keeps you awake during class. She taught the Nursing chem well, and is always willing to help. Her tests are fair and straightforward, need to go to lectures and take notes.
excellent
I love this course. It is by far one of the easiest chemistry classes I have ever taken. Not recommended for someone who has never taken any chemistry.
sux ass.especially for the organic part...puts problems taht she talks about for 30 seconds on the test. Nothing we learn in lab or the major stuff in class are really on the test. Nothing like the practice tests that we bought in the beginning of the year by g.Badick?...his tests were 100% easier
A lot of material and she does go over it quickly. Requires a****load of studying, but an A is do-able. Plus she keeps you awake.
she's kind of out there and her lectures arent always clear
Organic chemistry is hard no matter where you take it and who you take it from. But Dr. Huston is very nice and explains things as well as possible. If you have to take ochem, take it from her.
She goes over material really quickly in lecture, and her explanations aren't always clear. Most of what is taught in class is not on the exams... which tends to make them a little hard cause you never know what to study or how much. She def. will keep you entertained though.
Ericka is the bomb! I loved this class, did well, and ended up with an A+ for the year. She's amazing and very straight-forward. If an A in organic is possible, she's the right choice!
Hard material, but a good teacher. Make sure to go to class it helps and do as much practice as possible. Shes very hyper but it keeps you awake.
Very nice and willing to help any time! Material that is covered in this class is very challenging, requires A LOT of your personal work at home, but if you need help to understand Dr. Huston is very helpful. During lectures she even lays down on the floor trying to show 3D shape of molecules :) - very cute and makes you want to learn!

hard material, but it is possible to do well. i got a b+ with alot of effort. if you put the time in, a good grade is possible. she's really helpful if you have questions. the day before an exam she has office hours from 7am-730 pm which is great for last minute clarifications. if you have to take chem, shes a good choice
shes kinda quirky which makes a boring class more interesting. compared to people with other teachers she seems like one of the best ones. she gives good detailed notes and her tests are hard but fair.
Sooo enthusiastic which makes learning the material so much more fun. Her tests are hard but managable if you study a lot. She's always willing to answer questions which is good. I loved her so much I'm going to take Gen Chem 2 with her next semester.
professor huston is very energetic and keeps you awake during class. she always explains herself and if she doesnt know the answer to your question she always is willing to email you with the right one. ive missed lecture a couple of times, but her tests and quizes are easy even if you dont go to class. just do the homework even though its optional
She is so enthusiastic about teaching and is really funny. If you don't have a strong background in chemistry she is sorta hard to understand. Study and you will do fine.
She is a good teacher and keeps you entertained as she runs around the front of the room. She is really enthusiastic about chem and is really an ochem teacher so she'll point out things that we learned in gen chem to remember for ochem.
She is so nice and goes crazy during lecture by jummping up and down and running from one side of the chalkboard to the other. Gen Chem 1 is a tough course no matter who you have..but she makes the class interesting and her lectures are a HUGE help. Tests aren't that bad either! Just study and know the stuff.
Dr. Huston is so energetic and makes class fun. She runs around the room erasing the chalkboard and her tests are not meant to be tricky. If you study the material and know what is in the notes you will do well.
Dr. Huston is the most awesome professor for chemistry ever! She is extremely helpful and writes down lots of good examples in the notes. The tests are fair and you can do well on them if you study your notes and your recitation quizzes. She is animated and lively during lecture, so you won't get bored! Sign up for her!
Dr. Huston is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is very lively and runs around the class and is just nuts. She is very fair and very good at explaining chemistry. Also, if you need help, she finds every way possible to meet and help. Very highly recommended. You'll learn chem with her.
she is just perfect, you only gotta take care of your notes and you will be in great shape .
she's very helpful, very clear, and really ttrying to help you pass the class. If you take her and you still try hard, because it's a hard class regardless, you'll pass. She's the only prof you can do this with because she actually helps you understand the material...unlike the other profs. hope this helps!!
i had her for chem 2 and she could possibly be one of the worst teachers i ever had. she made multiple mistakes while writing on the board and was very hard to follow. Her tests are incredibly hard and she does not curve at all. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE!
great teacher. its a tough class but chem is going to be tough and she really helps you understand.
She is probably the best professor I've had! She gets very excited about chemistry and makes lecture bareable. Her tests are fair, if you do the homework you should be okay. She also re-grades exams if you think you deserve more points. I would definitely recommend her.
Dr. Huston is by far my favorite professor. She is extremely helpful and very sweet. Her teaching style reflects an in depth knowledge of the subject and she presents information in a very clear manner. Her tests are very fair, and she has many opportunities for students to receive help before exams. I wish that she was teaching Gen Chem II!
What a great teacher - she prances around a lot, making class more interesting. Although she can't spell for her life, it's fun watching the replacement words she comes up with. Her tests are VERY fair, no trick questions you find with most science teachers. I skipped a lot of lectures, and still managed to get A's on the tests. Take her!
She's very into Chemistry. Her tests are very reasonable and you'll do well if you do all the Homework problems assigned, even though they aren't worth any points, it's the only way to really learn. She makes mistakes on the board quite often and she can't spell. She's recommended though under Golde
She was horrible. Her tests didn't correspond to the lessons she gave. Her accent is annoying, and I hate chemistry ten times more now after taking her class. Bring a pillow, bring food, and bring your ipod because you will learn more doing that than listening to her teach. Do what you can to stay away from her.
She is by far the best professor I have ever had! She keeps the class interesting by running around and being eccentric. Even though she might be slightly crazy, she is still a great prof. Her tests are very fair, and she will even re-grade problems. If the homework is done, then the tests and quizzes are not hard at all. Take her class!
Her class is an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE! I NEVER want to take a chemistry course again after taking her for Chem 1. Her tests are ridiculously long and include random, irrelevant problems. Her lectures are pointless..you pretty much have to teach yourself. Unless you are naturally good at chemistry, DO NOT TAKE HER!
Average prof. Lecures were boring, and she pretty much just did problems out of the book.
her lectures are really boring but her tests are ok as long as you do the assigned hw every week. there's no curve or ec tho.
Huston is awesome. There are no surprises on tests- if you study, go to lecture and do all the homework, you will do well (unlike some other profs in this dept!). Plus she is very nice and helpful and obviously really wants you to learn this stuff.
OChem is a VERY hard subject. Dr. Huston is an excellent professor. Didn't get what I needed to pass, but I still loved her anyway. Crystal clear, makes class fun and is crazy hyper, is available for help, very nice lady overall. Stay away from the 4 week summer course if you can't devote your life to it, literally. She is a wonderful person.
Easily one of the best professors I've had for the sciences. As you know by now, the class isn't any cake-walk, but she was extremely helpful, nice, and had a contagious passion for the subject. Make sure you read the text; her lectures largely follow what's in the book. Doesn't try to trick you on tests but will challenge you. Overall, great prof.
Dr. Huston is interesting. She is really energetic--which can be a good and bad thing. She is really nice if you ask her for help. She really wants you to do well.
She goes extremely slow on the most basic things, what a carbon atom is for instance. Then she flies through the complex mechanisms, so the later tests are near impossible. The last few test had curves over 30% because of her ineptitude. Avoid for O-chem, she would probably be alright for gen chem.
Makes O chem very clear. Very helpful in office hours. Better if you get to know her. Classes are very structured, tells you each section of the book her notes are coming from, tests are hard but what ochem test isn't, very lively and energetic when she teaches.
I LOVED Dr. Huston. Her explanations were extremely clear and she made note taking very easy. Do the homework that she recommends and you'll do very well.
I'm taking the 4 week summer course, and it is really tough! You really have to be on top of notes and homework. Huston makes class somewhat interesting with her energetic teaching style, although really you can only make ochem so interesting. She is a pretty good professor; I'd recommend her. Goes a little too fast, but you have to in 4 weeks.
Wonderful instructor!! She is extremely excited about OCHEM and it shows; she moves at just the right pace and her exams, while challenging, are fair and balanced. The best chem professor I have ever had!
What a great instructor! Chemistry and I never got along until I took her class. She clarifies concepts very well, and her tests are challenging, but fair. Highly recommended!
absolutely wonderful professor. she truly cares about every student and pushes them to succeed. always available for help!
Dr. Huston was one of the best chemistry professors i've ever had. She is always willing to help, and she really loves ochem. Take the 4 week summer course if you're worried about taking ochem during the year. It's hard, but if Dr. Huston is your professor, it's worth it.
She is the zaniest teacher I have ever had. I completely had to teach myself everything from the book because her notes were erratic. While teaching Organic Chemistry she would make mistakes while teaching and taking notes and STUDENTS were correcting her. Ridiculous.
This woman is crazy. Her notes make no sense, you have to teach yourself everything over again so lectures are useless. The tests are nothing like the problems in the book that she recommends you do, they are MUCH harder on the test. Get the textbook though, because you will have to read the chapters after lectures to know what just went on.
Absolutely terrible. Lectures/notes are disorganized. Exams don't reflect material in book when the only way to learn is to do every problem in the book because she will never give an exam study guide. She is often wrong about information and goes so slowly over the easiest introductory topics but rushes through organic. Have fun teaching yourself!
Chem910 is NOT easy. Sure the other chem classes are a breeze but keep in mind this is 5 semesters of chem crumpled in one. Use the book! Especially when learning O-chem, then the book should be your best friend. Tests are easy or some, and extremely hard for others. If you're taking this chem course, all the luck to you - you'll need it.
HARDEST CLASS EVER! I got a 5 on the AP Chem test and this class is impossible! The homework she gives us to practice is super easy in comparison to the tests... She teaches the exact OPPOSITE than what is on the test... ex: she taught us about hyperventilation while on the test it was hypoventilation... if you can somehow get out of this class do!
Ericka was the best chemistry professor ever. Everyone thought her tests were hard because they did not come to lectures or they talked during them. You have to go to lectures, read the book for reinforcement and STUDY (which is what college is for) and you'll do fine. I love her and we are very close now. I am trying to get her for ochem 1.
Erica is a GREAT Organic chemistry teacher. True, I failed her class the first time but that was because of a lack of work ethic on my part. She gives you all you need to succeed. She explains things very well in class, and is very animated. I'm taking her again for 0310 and 0320.
Dr. Huston is a great professor. You have to go to class and take notes. You have to put in time and effort and you will definitely do well. She puts up her chapter summaries online and she gives you old exams which are both really helpful assets. You learn a lot and she's very enthusiastic about her subject. Definitely take her!
great instructor. Explains concepts very well.
Great professor. She is clear as to what material is very important and will be covered on exams, which are very reasonable (not easy though). Her notes are very helpful. do the assigned optional homework because her exams problems are literally based off of homework problems. Definitely recommend for O Chem.
Excellent Prof. One of the best I have had. Very clear with what is important and excellent at explaining concepts. Highly recommend her class for Organic Chemistry.
Awesome professor! very helpful and energetic about chemistry. makes a 9:30 am class entertaining
The course itself is difficult and Erica's notes are extremely scatterbrained. She was very unorganized in lecture and it made it hard to understand. I went to every lecture and still had a very hard time with the class. If you can get a different professor I recommend it.
She's a very organized, systematic lecturer on a hard-to-organize topic. Her summary/review sheets outline exactly what you need to understand and how to learn it from your notes and the text, making it very easy to do well if you put in the time (not always the case in Orgo). Also, energetic and easy-to-understand.
PROS:She prances around like a fairy, which is very entertaining. She is very helpful and nice when you ask for help. She wants you to do well. CONS:She makes mistakes on the board a lot. The exams are tricky. They are only 25 multiple choice questions and she doesn't grade your work. Expect at least 2 trick q's/exam. Only 2 exams+final. A-.
By far one of the best professors I had. Her tests are fair, and if you know the material and put in the effort you will get an A, simple as that. She is one of the few teachers who holds review sessions before exams and is more than willing to work with you individually. I would HANDS DOWN recommend her to anyone.
She was a really good teacher! DO THE HOMEWORK! you have to go to lecture becuase she does not put lecture notes up online. She is funny and very interesting. Her tests are hard, but very do able. She is vary helpful and tells you exactly what she wants!!!
If you can take her for Chem1.. do it. She is kind, helpful, and really quirky. Last semester, she did an interpretive dance to describe electron flow.. and at 9am in the morning, I definitely appreciate her enthusiasm. The will go out of her way to help like holding review sessions in hallways. Her tests are directly from the homework, and doable
GREAT PROFESSOR! Very eccentric and energetic in class. Makes a long class with a lot of tedious information interesting and fast-paced. Very helpful if you approach her or ask questions. Pay attention in class, do the homework problems, and you're set. Very good class with a great professor.
Wonderful teacher. Hard class but definitely enjoyable with her
Great teacher! Take for OChem 2. Doesn't make you learn extraneous details and stresses the concepts. You'll learn the important parts of the class that you'll need for MCATs, etc.
Great teacher! Very clear, very available, very helpful. Used TONS of great examples. I would definitely recommend her!
Ochem 2 is a difficult class, but Huston's tests are very straight-forward and easy if you go to class and do the recommended homework. She's by far the easiest Ochem teacher. Take her!
Huston is the best option youll find for dreaded ochem2. Very good at teaching, even better at answering questions. And the exams surprisingly weren't too bad, def more reasonable than other sects. Only 2 negatives 1) synthesis prob few times were poorly done 2) stingy cut off between A/B curve.(although in general very few As are given in ochem 2)
Although the class is hard and the exams are not easy, she is good at solving problems and teaching. She can help you learn ochem well!
Probably 1 of easier ochem 2 sect(all relative), avg were around a 70 while other sect were in 50s. But also means tiny curve so a catch 22. Overall, good teacher, good at explaining + fairly straightforward. Her exams arent as tricky as others. But dont mistake it for being easy; still must be as high on the class distrib to do well as other sects
Erica is awesome. If you want to have fun and learn ochem, you definitely will. Very enthusiastic about material and keeps my attention for the entire 2 hours/day. Her recitations are optional, but very helpful when you don't understand a problem. Exams are very easy if payed attention in lecture and you do the recommended homework and readings.
She scares you a little at first but this really isnt that bad. Shes very good and willing to help. She makes ochem much more straightforward than others. Clear with mechanisms and whats important. Makes ochem 2 manageable. All ochem 2 is tough but this is your best option. Totally reasonable, which isnt always the case w other ochem 2 sections!
Huston makes Gen Chem more interesting. She is very nice and energetic. You should go to the lectures because she doesn't post notes online, but what she mostly does is go over examples. DO THE HOMEWORK. It will help you with the Recitation quizzes and the exams. There was also a practice exam packet offered. Pretty easy class overall.
Shes a really nice lady, but the toughest chem 1 teacher compared to all the others. Her tests are 25 q's multiple choice but the wording is tricky. Class average for first exam was a 65% while the other chem teacher (Golde) had a class average of 80%! The good thing abt her is u can buy practice exams that are similar to the real exam
Her tests are difficult and she never seems to do examples in class of difficult tricky questions that always appear on the tests. She's not a big fan of curving either, even though it seemed necessary for the averages. She also ended up getting behind in the lectures so that our labs didn't match up with what we were learning in class. ugh
Dr Huston is a great prof and you'll learn chem very well; however, her course is definitely one of the harder sections of chem 1. Exams aren't impossible, but they're definitely on the trickier side. She seems very interested in teaching/helping you do well. Her lecture is very interesting and I'd take her again. DON'T expect a big curve, though
Professor Huston was great. I can't stress enough how much you should do the assigned homework problems! It's definitely not a guaranteed A, but it's certainly achievable. There are two midterms (25 multiple choice) and the final (30 multiple choice, & weighted twice as much as one of the exams), which means you really have to do well on the tests.
She does a really good job explaining things in class. I really learned the material but her tests were extremely hard. She also does not curve her tests. I easily could have ended up with an A in Golde's class but got a B+. I would recommend her if you really want to learn the material and you are good at taking tests.
Dr. Huston was amazingly helpful and enthusiastic about chemistry and her students. One of the only professors I had that actually went the extra mile to explain concepts IN class and outside. You must be the one to seek help and do the homework assigned because it will help you with the tests which are do-able.
Very helpful and enthusiastic concerning chemistry, but be careful. It is easy to lose points on her exams since they have a small amount of multiple choice questions only. In my opinion the exams can be tricky and should be read very carefully or your grade will drop quickly. Hard tests!!!
Taking OCHEM in 4 weeks is tough but honestly this is easier than during the reg yr. Very clear and methodical, will tell you what's important and follows clear patterns. Fair grader, very good lecturer, clear explanations, very helpful and willing to help. Provides tons of resources and handouts. No tricks--do the work you'll get a good grade.
Erika is a ball of fire. She's super energetic and very entertaining. She's very good when it comes to explaining the material. If your gen.chem knowledge isn't too strong, then her lectures may be difficult. She can also move quickly through some material. But her exams are entirely fair and overall not bad. Just do a fair amount of study
Ericka is a wonderful woman. She is so energetic and loves her job. Exams are very straight forward and she does not try to trick you. Pay attention in class and you should be fine.
Erica Huston is the best professor I have had thus far at Pitt. Yes, her class is challenging... but it is Ochem, so you should know what you are getting into. Genuinely cares about how you do, so go to her office hours if you need help. Best option available for sure.
Ericka is the best ochem1 professor at Pitt. She provides chapter summaries and tells you exactly what you need to know for each exam. If you go to class, do the homework, and study hard an A is definitely possible.
Clear and organized lecturer who is just as good as Bandik. She is very willing to help you succeed in OChem. Go to class because her notes are very good study tools. Her tests aren't impossible, but you definitely need to study hard. Clearly loves organic and it shows. Makes class fun and you'll learn a lot. Definitely recommend Ericka for Ochem
let's just start by saying ochem is ridiculous. Ericka is a very good teacher, energetic and organized, gives chapter summaries that really clear things out. but still the exam averages ranged as low as a high 50 or a low 60, can't remember for sure. I say take her, but I don't think that's gonna ease your ochem experience.
Huston is fantastic! Very difficult course but she is a phenomenal professor. One of the very best I've had at Pitt so far. Highly recommend her!
Professor Huston is amazing! So nice, very clear in lecture, and always very peppy which makes it easy to stay engaged in lecture. If you pay attention in lecture and read its pretty easy. I just read the book and got an A. Went to her office hours a lot and she was happy to help!
Dr. Huston is one of my favorite professors at Pitt. Ochem is traditionally a difficult subject, but taking it with her eases the sting. She makes sure that there are enough review sessions so that if you ever need help, you can get it. She is so passionate about the subject, which makes lectures semi-enjoyable. Take her if you can!
Dr. Huston is a phenomenal teacher for both CHEM0310/0320. She is very engaging in her lectures and wants every student to succeed. No book is needed for the course unless you want to do book problems she assigns with each section, which is recommended. If you show her by the final that you know your stuff, she will reflect that in your grade.
She is such an engaging lecturer and made the class so much more interesting than it seems. Her tests are very fair. (the hardness of the class is from the material itself not how she teaches it). I think you couldn't go wrong with picking her as your teacher
OChem is NOT easy, but Dr. Huston is a phenomenal teacher. I didn't do well in the class, but ochem never really 'clicked' for me until a while later. Don't expect an easy A in this course, but if you're willing to learn Dr. Huston is willing to teach. She also includes chapter summaries online usually and specific book problems to accomplish.
Dr. Huston's by far the best professor I've studied under. I was quite skeptical about ochem at first (due to its intense level of difficulty) but Dr. Huston makes the lectures fun! She's simply BEST of the BEST. Plus, if you go to her office hours often (like me), she's the best. Overall, Dr. Huston's a baller
Dr. Huston's by far the best professor I've studied under. I was quite skeptical about ochem at first (due to its intense level of difficulty) but Dr. Huston makes the lectures fun! Plus, if you go to her office hours often (like me), she's the best. Overall, Dr. Huston's a baller. Happily taking her again for OCHEM 2!
By far the best professor I've had at Pitt. Ericka is a ball of energy whose passion for OChem shows in her lectures. She keeps concepts crystal-clear and is happy to help whenever you need it. Her tests, though difficult if you don't master the material, are extremely fair; I never saw a trick question or something I hadn't previously encountered.
I hate ochem but at least Huston made it as painless as possible. Nice lady and willing to help. Very clear with what she expected us to know. Ochem is still a hard subject though. unless you're a chem wizard, prepare to really work for a good grade
Take Huston for O Chem! An A is within reach if your willing to work. She very clear and provides lots of extra resources. I readmemorized the book, didn't go to class, did the hw, and got 90+ on all tests. Tests are fair but be willing to do 25+ hrs of studying for the A. The book is key and MEMORIZE results rather than why it happen to save time
one of the top 5 lecturers at pitt. BEST PROFESSOR FUREVER
Professor Huston is very helpful. She makes lectures enjoyable for what is typically a dry subject. In terms of the class your grade is just based off of three exams and a final. She doesn't drop any exams but will curve 3-5% final grade at the end. Exams are tough, she is really nitpicky compared to other prof. Read the book do her ws and chap sum
Ericka is easily the best chemistry professor that I have had at Pitt. While her exams are by no means easy, she takes the time to actually teach the material in class so students are able to succeed. Her enthusiasm for teaching is contagious, and it is impossible to become bored while she is lecturing.
ericka muh gurlll
Not nearly as hard or stingy as Bandik but 90% as good a professor. Very clear with what you need to know and don't, ALWAYS willing to help. Has tons of review sessions. Ochem is never easy but she's one of the few ochem profs where if you put in the work you know for sure you'll be rewarded. Doesnt do tricks or make things harder than need to be
Ericka is one of the best professors I've had at Pitt. Her lectures are very informative and enthusiastic, making OChem 2 less miserable. She is very interested in her students succeeding, but her exams are very difficult and you will really have to work. If you want an A,take someone else. I didn't pass with her, but still loved being her in class
Ericka is an amazing professor for both Chem310 and Chem320. She's very engaging and obviously passionate about what she does. She makes organic chemistry easy to understand, and she's very straightforward and simple about what she expects. Overall, Ericka's a baller
listen - show up to lecture! you might hate wakin up in the morning to go to dumb organic chem lecture, but she'll wake you up & actually teach you the material you need to know for the exam. don't skip - even if you go just to listen and not take notes - its a hell of a lot better than not going at all. she really teaches & she REALLy cares.
OChem is not an easy subject. Huston makes it as easy as possible. She provides wonderful chapter summaries and recitation worksheets. I went to lecture, looked over the summaries and the text, and did all the worksheets, and got A in both. Textbook homework problems are also provided, but not necessary. Extra TA-led recitation are helpful!!!
On the first day, Dr. Huston told us the secret to passing orgo that has stuck with me ever since: don't walk in hating what you are about to live through, but rather embrace it and try to enjoy what you do. Using that perspective, I have never had a teacher as clear, concise, and enjoyable to take as Dr. Huston. Want to learn orgo? TAKE DR. HUSTON
From the very first day of lecture, Ericka's enthusiasm for organic chemistry was contagious. She takes the "scary" subject of organic chemistry and makes it relatable and interesting to her students. That being said, it is A LOT of work still to succeed in ochem 2. No matter what though, take Ericka if you can!
Best Ochem teacher ever! Very enthusiastic in lecture (runs around and jumps) and really instills a good foundation of Organic chemistry onto students. Even tho she's great, you still have to put in a lot of effort because her exams can be tricky. Definitely recommend taking her if this is relevant to your major! P.S. Do not expect a curve.
After George she's far and away the best ochem professor you'll find here. And she's much more straightforward and easier than George. No tricks. Do the problems she assigns, understand the rxns and mechanisms in class, you'll do well. It's alot of material but she's very clear with what she wants and what you can ignore and is great for help
Dr. Huston is the best professor I have had yet. She makes the material clear and is always there to help if you need it. The class material is inherently difficult but she tests fairly and gives you all the materials needed to prepare for her exams.
She teaches the material very clearly and chooses good examples to demonstrate ochem concepts. Her exams are easy. Go to class, review all her notes, do all the homework she assigns, rewrite reactions, understand the theoretical concepts and you will do well in this class
Dr. Huston works hard to make the material clear and uses great examples to illustrate concepts. She has distilled the material to be really understandable. That said, ochem requires a ton of time, and I recommend taking a lighter courseload while taking it. Tests were fair and not too long. I can honestly say I love ochem because of this woman!
Dr. Huston is a great professor. It's a tough subject but she makes it really interesting, relevant and fun. Very accessible out of class. Her summaries are excellent; those plus lecture notes made tests straightforward. It's like a new language so expect to put in lots of practice. I went in worried, came out loving ochem! Definitely take her.
Ericka was fantastic! She made a difficult course entertaining and relatively easy to understand. She provides endless materials to help study and comes in on Sundays to hold review sessions before each exam. She is absolutely wonderful! I HIGHLY recommend taking her for OChem! But be warned -- reading the book is absolutely essential to passing
It's a hard class but I would definitely take it with Dr. Huston. She is very helpful and easy to get in touch with. She will do everything she can to help you succeed. Skipping occasionally is okay because her chapter summaries outline basically everything you need to know. Probably your best bet for ochem.
I was worried about taking ochem with my other engineering classes, but Ericka made the class survivable and kind of fun! I would recommend anyone taking ochem to do anything possible to get into her class! She gives excellent summary sheets of each chapter, but I would recommend not skipping lecture or recitation because it was very helpful.
LOVE Dr. Huston. She makes ochem very bearable, and you may even look forward to learning about carbon. Her enthusiasm and smile are contagious, and she is super helpful outside of class. Exams are very fair if you put in a lot of work outside of class. Definitely do all the recommended practice problems. One of the best professors I've had
It's ochem II. It should be challenging. But dear lord, this is the hardest class I have taken at Pitt. Ericka gives amazing lectures and she's an amazing professor, but her exams are some of the hardest exams I have ever taken. Knowing and retaining stuff from ochem I is essential, she will try to trick you on exams, everything in lecture is fair.
Had Dr. Huston for ochem 1 and 2. She makes it relatively easy. Recommend reading the textbook for 310, but her chapter summaries are sufficient for 320 (I barely read the actual text in 320). Do the problems!! Mark and come back to the ones you mess up. This is, I think, the best way to approach ochem. The tests were basically all fair. I 3 Ochem
She does a decent job of making the material understandable & keeping your attention during lecture. Lots of homework. I emailed her 4x to set up a meeting, all of which she said she received but never responded to. When I finally skipped a class to attend her office hours she was condescending and rude. Definitely not like people describe her.
Dr. Huston is a really fun professor to have in class, even though the lecture material itself can be boring sometimes. She gets very excited about anything similar to organic chemistry and her dog, Professor Emeril. Even if she can get a little distracted and make mistakes sometimes, she usually catches herself while doing the problem,
Her lectures had no structure, and she never gave background on what concepts the problems she was doing related to. Shes more concerned with relating things to organic than actually explaining them. She has no clue how to use technology. Dont take for gen chem unless you have a solid chem background or are really good at teaching yourself.
Dr. Huston was a good professor to have for gen chem 1. You have to read the book though in order to do well. At the end of the semester, Dr. Huston tends to rush the last three chapters into a really short time. Basically read the book and do A LOT of practice problems. There were two midterms and the final which was pretty hard.
All was fine until the first exam- 25 questions for 20% of our grade. Test questions were impossible compared to practice and quizzes, and to top it off- she only curved students who got higher than a 60%. Her lectures are chaotic and confusing- I do not recommend if you are not naturally good at chem.
LOVE Dr. Huston!Made me absolutely love chemistry and her lectures are amazing. Her exams are difficult but you will be fine if you really study for them. The mathematics on her exams are the problems done on quizzes and in class but the conceptual questions are very specific and could be minor details in the book or in lecture. She is great!
Dr. Huston was an okay professor. She was quite disorganized but she really loved chemistry. Her tests were pretty hard but doable. Her final was awful my semester. Shes more of an organic chem teacher than gen chem 1. Try and get another prof if you can but if you dont its not the end of the world. Pre-reading helps to decifer her notes.
Dr. Huston is an icon and I have no idea why she's not a more popular choice for OCHEM. She makes it fun and interesting, has great handouts. The tests are difficult but not impossible. She has also done a commendable job transforming the class to online. Not to mention her dog Emeril is just too cute.
Best teacher I've ever had in the chem department and possibly one of the best teachers I had at Pitt. Very reasonable, not too difficult, and I still think I learned a lot. Highly recommend going to class.
Dr. Huston made Ochem enjoyable to learn. If you do her suggested textbook problems and rework your recitation sheets you can get an A.
I had Dr. Huston a few years ago and now that I'm preparing for the MCAT, I see how much I remember and what she taught me. She has great organization. Had I done more practice problems, I see how doable an A is in her class.
She is the prof you want for orgo 1! Explains concepts clearly, and breaks concepts down in lecture. Watch JoeChem as his vids follow HER class specifically. Her exams can be tricky, but do her practice ws/exams bc the exam questions are the same as the practice. At times, she can go fast in class, but u should be fine if you watch/do ws after lec.
Lots of helpful resources and very very clear expectations for exams. Class is very difficult but I still found it enjoyable. exam averages are really low, and grading is a little unclear because of the curve. Take her for OChem if you have the option
Ochem is going to be hard no matter who you take, but Huston is def a good option. She is obviously passtionate about ochem and teaching it. You still have to study really hard. But if you put in the work, you can pass, this is coming from someone who is bad at chem. She tries to make lecture fun which is appreciated.
Ochem is a DIFFICULT class. Dr. Huston's enthusiastic and accomadating attitude made it better. Great professor!
Dr. Huston is an angel, she is so caring and always happy in class. She is very passionate when it comes to ochem & she really does try to make sure students understand the material. This is a difficult class, so get as much help as possible. I studied abt 5 hours a week and never went to recitation so I only passed with a B, but an A is possible
I love Ericka, she is so caring and sweet, and always available to her students. Once I emailed her at midnight the night before an exam and she emailed me back at 12:05. I went to all of her office hours and it was incredibly helpful. Her exams were exactly like her practice exams, so it makes it super manageable!
Ericka is so enthusiastic about ochem and it's contagious. I hated gen chem but she made me love ochem. Her exams are written very well with one question about each topic we covered, and her practice exams are very similar to the midterms. Only downside is she is hard to get ahold of by email. But long as you talk to her in class you should be fine
Amazing take her.
I am currently taking Dr. Huston and she is definitely one of the better Ochem professors in the school. Her class is very entertaining and engaging. Her tests are straightforward and are very similar to the practice exams. Although she may only be available in the spring, I would recommend her class if you are considering taking Ochem.
Dr. Huston is the sweetest professor ever. She is kind, caring, and truly loves what she teaches. Her passion for organic chemistry is contagious and makes lectures enjoyable. With any organic chemistry class, you will need to put in the work outside of class, but Dr. Huston is there to support you every step along the way.
For organic chemistry, Ericka takes lots of challenging concepts and explains them clearly in her lectures. Although she goes through concepts quickly, her homework and recitation sheets are really good preparation for her exams and will you to succeed in the class. She is also really accessible through her office hours and recitations. Take her!
I LOVED professor Huston! She absolutely loves her job, and is always excited to teach. This makes learning the course so much more fun. She is easy to talk to, and her office hours are super helpful. She only grades off of 3 tests and the final, so you have to do good on your tests or you won't do well in the course. Overall though, she's amazing!
Dr. Huston is so so fun. She teaches chemistry like it is the most interesting and exciting thing in the world, and that energy gets passed along to you. Your grade is only made up of 3 midterms and a final. I studied off of her worksheets and sample exams (doing them over and over again) and everything worked out nicely. Take her if you can.
Dr. Huston is amazing! Orgo is such a hard class, but she definitely sets you up to succeed. Personally, I struggled so much with the material, but she is there to help you all the time! She has so many resources (and is great at responding to emails.) The curve is super forgiving so don't get discouraged if you are getting around/below average!
i love love loved dr. huston. she's funny, smart, kind, and an amazing teacher, especially for something as hard as orgo. 3 midterms and 1 final, standard orgo grading scale. she is really great at teaching and will do the same problem over and over if students request her to. she cracks jokes and makes orgo fun. email her q's and go to recitation!
Ericka's lectures are funny but chaotic and she is mostly available for help. However, THERE WAS NO CURVE if you were doing moderately well in the class. My final grade was exactly what my 3 exam average was. She never released the final exam grades and I truly didn't know what my grade would be before looking at my transcript. Take George
Since the grade is based on 3 exams and the final, I was pretty stressed out throughout the course. Her homework reflects what she looks for on the exams. She is very sweet, but can be disorganized & struggles with technology. Recitation was only helpful if you do not understand the concepts she talks about in the HW. Zooms for rec and office hours
DO NOT TAKE HER! She does not curve at the end, and lied to us all throughout the semester that there would be a curve. She would always say aim for the 90s even though the test averages were low (62-65%). She did not release our final exam scores before submitting our final grades for the course on peoplesoft. Overall, I would not recommend at all
HW was helpful but lectures are SO disorganized and she goes over material pretty fast so it felt like I taught myself stuff. said there was a curve but in the end turns out it was just the regular grading scale (so no curve?) even tho avgs were low. didn't share grades of the final. Hasn't responded to my emails, ta office hours are pretty good
Goat teacher
Dr. Huston is super nice but she's not my favorite. Orgo is hard and maybe I didn't prepare enough, but it felt like I exhausted all her resources she provided and I still didn't do too well in her class. She will prepare you for orgo 2 better than Bell, but she's not much different to Bandik. Her exams are probably more fair than Bandik's though
Orgo is a DIFFICULT subject. However, I think she makes concepts very clear, especially compared to the textbook. Posts summaries of chapters and her practice tests are almost the same as the actual test. Grade is only three tests + final, but I never felt like her tests were unfair. Did have some difficulty with technology.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Her lectures are so disorganized. Basically I taught myself everything from jOcHEM. She has 3 exams and a final. She did not release a grade for final exam or curve as she promised. She did not reply back to my emails regarding the final grade. Take pete bell or bandik, they are much better. She does not care about her students.
Huston was absolutely amazing, provided a lot of resources, made the information digestible, and exams were very similar to worksheets and past exams. A little chaotic, but honestly helped me make sure to focus. Take her if you can, she's awesome!
Ericka is pretty good I took her on my 2nd time taking Ochem 1 and frankly if you put in the effort(which can be up to 30 hours for an exam) you will do well. My first exam I got a 73% because she covers more than most profs on the 1st exam beware! 2nd Exam: 94, 3rd Exam: 88 and Final: 83. This class was more than fair and exams are hard but doable
I retook orgo with Dr. H and I cant say that I have ever been happier with my decision. Dr. Huston is nothing short of amazing. IF YOU PUT EFFORT THIS CLASS IS DOABLE. To prep honestly just read our textbook and do her worksheets week by week use office hrs. I consistently scored a 70% or higher and after curve ended with a B+ in the course.
Ochem is tough, but I recommend her! She can be chaotic during lec, but very passionate, engaging, & cares for students. Lectures are FAST-PACED and INFO-HEAVY; go to lec & rec, and PRACTICE! Practice tests similar to actual exam. Only exams for grades, but curves at the end based on final average. Very accessible and open to questions!
Cool professor, Ericka was pretty nice and also her exam werent horrible. Curves relative to class so if you take in fall with sweaters expect no curve. But I heard in the spring she has given a 9% curve due to exam averages being in the gutter. Textbook heavy, and her final prep was really rushed chaps 11-13. Other than that solid prof.
You'd be better off taking Bell or Bandik. Ericka is disorganized and confusing because of that. We are only graded by exams, which always go poorly. The average for exam #2 was 51%... that says more about the professor than the students. I understand orgo is hard, but at this point, I feel like even if I pass I don't know the orgo material!
Ericka was not a good professor for
She is unable to teach properly without jumping up and down in lecture. Her exam averages are lower than her previous classes and is unable to properly teach us organic chemistry and expects us to magically understand it. She taught the last bit of material post-classes ending via zoom office hours. This is an unfair teacher. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Ericka is a teacher who is unable to properly teach us ochem. The class is 3 exams and a final, and the averages have been around a 50. Her practice exams are nowhere like her real exam. Since our whole grade is based off exams, there is no buffer and no opportunity to show growth. Ochem is hard but your life will be harder with her. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Graded only by 3 midterms (averages: 71, 51, 50) and a final. No slides, uses chapter summaries (so we can follow with the textbook) + handwrites her notes in lecture, which are so messy and hardly legible. Very unclear about the curve and extremely discouraging if you talk to her about grades. Taught the last portion of class thru Zoom. AVOID!!!
READ THE TEXTBOOK AND DO THE HW (get help if you don't understand) Ericka provides a lot of resources to succeed so use them. Orgo is hard but if you exhaust all your options you can do well. Do the practice many times.Try to truly understand the ins and outs of content. Curves average to a high C. A little annoying that only tests make up grade.
Ericka is fantastic. Her exams are pretty dang hard but you can can do well in the class! Use the book as supplemental material and DO THE PROBLEMS THROUGHLY, if you do gurantee you should get a 70 or higher on each exam pre curve which can be an 85 on some exams! She's super nice in zoom too GO TO OFFICE hours , recitation sucks tho.
Definitely recommend taking her! Orgo is a hard concept, but if you do hundreds of practice problems you'll be good. Doing the assigned textbook problems and the provided worksheets were a big help. Ericka is really encouraging when you go to her with questions and concerns. She curves nicely too if the averages are low (ours were usually in 50s).
I couldn't speak more highly of Dr.Huston. After the second exam I was discouraged and afraid I wouldn't pass. She encouraged me to keep going and was always extremely helpful when I went to her office hours. This class was hard, but it can be accomplished! Work through practice sheets over and over, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, and practice every day.
i took orgo 1 with her and struggled with her teaching style, but professors switched in the middle of summer so i didn't even pick her this time. she was bad then, and is still bad now. she is a nice person, but genuinely the exams are preposterous. lectures were hard to follow along with.
Took Huston for Orgo 1 and 2 and it was honestly awful. Averages were in the low 50s, she rushes through content, and her notes were all over the place. Her practice exams were always easier than her real exams. Her class has no structure to it. She doesn't care to change her teaching style. Don't let the good reviews deceive you. Take someone else
Dr. Huston is honestly one of the best professors I have had at Pitt. Organic 2 is a hard class regardless of professor but she made it slightly more enjoyable. Entire class is graded off 3 exams and a final (typical for organic chemistry), and there will more than likely be a curve (averages are usually in the 50% range). She is amazing.
Had Ericka for Ochem1 and chose her again for Ochem2. She can be a bit disorganized and fast in lecture, but she's a strong teacher overall. Class is 3 exams and a final, and grades are curved. Go to lecture and office hours; Ochem1 is harder; having her for both helped me succeed. Recommend sticking with her (or any teacher for both 1 & 2).
Professor Huston told us that she hadn't taught Ochem 2 in forever, so I was very worried going into it. Rightfully so. Everything was rushed. She is a very nice lady, but a bit all over the place; once, she forgot to hold the office hour right before an exam, and Zoom was full of students waiting for her, but she never showed up. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
Great professor, but not for everyone. Lectures are a brief intro, then solving problems on the board. I ended up having to relearn the material using the textbook. She clearly cares about the students and the content, and office hours help, but she has a unique teaching style. Use the textbook and keep up w/ (ungraded) homework, and you'll be OK.
do not take this prof unless you love the idea of failing, super rushed lectures, and unanswered questions. Took her for orgo 1 and 2- was okay for orgo 1 but 2 was absolutely terrible. Did not understand anything she would say in the lectures and doesn't post notes (she goes super fast through it) Disorganized af and one of the worst imo
Had Ericka for Orgo 1 and 2, and thought she was better at teaching Orgo 1. Granted, she hadn't taught orgo 2 before this semester in 8 years. Her tests were pretty hard, so you have to put in a lot of work. Doing the textbook questions and watching Jochem helped a lot! She does curve pretty fairly, but our class averages were always in the 50s.
Giving that all my other science classes I have gotten A's this is very telling. Very disorganized, so hard to reach, and frankly very rude!! Her exams are so difficult and gives you a hard time when asking for a regrade. Overall just not a good professor and would never recommend.
