I thought a History class was going to be boring no matter who taught it but I was wrong. Professor Altenbernd kept classes interesting and made it very clear what needed to be done to pass his class. I would take him again if he has openings when I need another History class.

Professor Altenbernd is a really great guy! However it was hard for me to stay focused in class because it consisted of him reading off a very long power point everyday. Other than that the class was very easy and professor Altenbernd is very funny and was very into the material he taught.

Super chill and accommodating. If you don't like your grade on a paper or if you forget to do it just talk to him and he'll help you out. Lectures every day but he's pretty funny. Makes it a comfortable environment to speak up during lectures. Online quizzes are really hard so read material thoroughly. Buy all three books, no real way around it.

Awesome professor! Definitely recommend. He talks super fast during the lectures but the information is interesting. I think he cares for his students. He is also very knowledgeable and knows answers to the majority of your questions. Prepare to read a lot though and do weekly online assignments. But generally it's not a hard class to pass :)

Super funny! Loved his class. Cant wait to take 112 with him. He is very understanding so if you need help dont be afraid to ask or make an appointment with him. His paper were easily explained. As long as you pay attention passing will be a breeze.

Very laidback and understanding of his students. He gives out readings every week or so that usually end up on quizzes taken online. READ THE CHAPTERS. Itll save you from quizzes and precis. Pretty funny, loves to relate his lectures to current issues, little to no homework at all. Biggest make or break is def the quizzes but offers extra credit

Straight forward class, read and do the essays to pass, also the discussions.

Really enjoyed my class with Mr. Altenbernd as my history teacher. He was so funny and made jokes constinatly which made it easier to learn the material. Great story teller, gave random facts, and interacts with the class. He likes to talk to the class and wants the class the talk back.

The midterm and final were just essays we had to write and there was plenty of extra credit at the end that could boost your grade 5%.

Erik is an awesome professor! Hes really sarcastic, but he definitely cares about his students. His lectures are long and he talks a lot, but hes really funny and passionate about history. Ive taken three classes with him and hes always been great. He makes you read and write a lot, but he doesnt assign too much work. Ive loved having him!

Unfortunately, it looks like one student had a very bad experience and is trying to drag this prof's name through the mud. Seriously, I took this course over the summer with 2 other courses & it was not bad at all! Don't let all the 1's from one student deter you from Altenbernd. He helped me when I emailed him and graded in a timely manner. Easy A

I took his online summer class as a high school student. Altenbernd was organized, straight forward, and fair. Everything he expected from us was clearly written out and easy to understand. He made a point to grade our 1st essay with comments so we knew if we were on the right track, and he answered emails. Good students will have no problem.

Not a big fan of history, but his lectures are amazing, he always keeps the class entertain and he is hilarious. He is very caring and also takes time in answering other students questions. I highly recommend him as a history professor!

Such an easy class! The class is comprised of discussions, quizzes and essays. The quizzes are easy. Instead of a midterm test and a final test it's an essay, which is a lot less stressful in my opinion. Everything needed for the essays are clearly written out so if you're a good writer it's an easy A.

Easy class, just pay attention during lectures and take notes. The quizzes are kinda hard but not really if you read the book. The "essays" he has you write are only 600 words until the final, which is 5 pages. He's funny and he sometimes let my class out early so I appreciated that. There were also many extra credit assignments to help your grade.

took online as a HS student. easiest teacher ever. I suck at history but got a 94%. NO E.C.!!! no exams, but 2 analytical papers and a final essay. He is a fair grader, OCCASIONALLY a little tough. a lot of responses and class discussions, which are easy. Quizzes aren't that hard. He is very clear in his critera!BUY BOOK ON AMAZON. way cheaper!!!

MUST GO TO OFFICE HOURS! at first i stuggled with his class but after going to office hourse it became clearer what his criteria was. He is really nice and sweet and if you show effort he will work with you. A powerpoint, a quiz and discussion every week. 4 main papers instead of tests.

I took this class during the pandemic so everything was online. we had discussions or quizzes almost everyday. if you do your work you'll get an A, but I didn't lol. we also had 2 analytical papers on movies throughout the class and at the end we had a primary source paper on a MLK book. the movies costed so that was annoying but overall was great

Online classes for history are boring but he tried to make it interesting. The quizzes were a problem because of cheating he shortened them but he did lengthen them later to be fair. Grading was hard but he gave clear instructions if you read it. He also was helpful in emails. This is a college class and it felt about as difficult as it should be.

This was a great class. I learned a lot and it was well organized. It was a lot of work but professor was helpful and responded to emails.

I took his online history 112 class. It was a pretty easy and straight-forward class. There is a lot of homework but it's manageable. No final, just an essay, the last of 3 over the course of the month. And the essays aren't bad, they're about films. Lots of discussion posts too. Quizzes are no sweat. Just do the work and you'll be fine.

This was a good class. I enjoyed the content and professor was helpful when you reach out. Gave me help for paper.

He is very excited about history and makes lectures interesting. My writing was not up to college and he met with me two times on zoom to help with papers. My English teacher told me to contact library for tutoring. He was really helpful compare to most.

I wrote a LOT for this class. The good thing was that Prof. Altenbernd's instructions are super clear. He tells you exactly what he wants, and if you follow directions, you will get a good grade. I learned a lot from this class. I said I would not take a class from his again but that's only because I don't need to.

The format of the 2021 Spring ONLINE class was a breeze. His class mainly consisted of discussion prompts, 4 essays mainly based off of films or historical videos. There are only two textbooks required for the class. Each week there was a minimum of 1 assignment due, and rarely 2 assignments in one week. This class was a breeze.

I was reluctant to take this class because of bad reviews on quizzes but there werent any. Im glad I took it. It was well organized and interesting. Professor was helpful.

I liked this class more than I thought I would. Took for summer so covered a lot in 5 weeks. It wasnt easy but I learned a lot.

Professor Altenbernd is a nice and caring professor, he will respond to emails quickly and he is willing to help you out. His instructions are super clear. He tells you exactly how it is supposed to be, and if you follow the directions, you will get a good grade. I learned a lot from this class.

Good class but fast paced. He covers a lot but I found it mostly interesting. Not an easy A but not hard either.

Everything was very doable. Not an easy A, but all the work was workable. Every week you read 1 chapter(about 30 pages) or watch a movie, write a 500-word discussion or Precis, and respond to two people with 100-150 words. His instructions are laid out clearly.

Great class even though it was online. I enjoyed the topics and was well organized. He wasnt flexible with lowering workload from a regular in person class. With covid that would have been nice. Still not a hard A if you do everything.

Took this class online so communication was just okay. I like the content and instructions were clear. Think covered a lot and grading sometimes was slow but when reached out he was helpful. Grading was easy if you follow guidelines. Overall it was a good class.

Heard mixed reviews. Gives a lot of written assignments. Such as discussions, essays, and response assignments. Word requirement was high & was time-consuming. Gives film to watch in order to do assignments. Must pay for them & textbook. Answered my emails in a good manner. He's alright as long as you put effort into the assignments.

amazing teacher! he truly wants the best for his students and that’s why he doesn’t give out quizzes, exams, or tests. all assignments are essays that are graded extremely fairly. if you watch the movie & read the book you will learn so much and get a great score! just follow his directions under essays as you can get 100% just following it!

I took his accelerated 5-week course in the winter. This class is mostly comprised of discussion posts, but there were 2 smaller essays and one final paper. Discussions weren't that bad but he graded essays very harshly. Even though there was a lot of work, I learned a lot from this class.

this was by no means an easy class. it will challenge you but he is a lenient grader who wants his students to succeed. complete all work & do all essays for an A.

I was worried before I took this class due to the mixed reviews, but it ended up being the easiest class of my life. I took the 5 week accelerated course over summer. I despise history fully and I took this class in a poor country with barely any signal at all, and it was still easy. He graded discussions and essays very easily.

There was a lot of work and discussion boards are like mini essays but overall if you do the assignments you will get a good grade. It was a summer class so workload was a lot. Communication was good. Overall a lot of work but got a good grade.

This was the only class I have taken at COC that I came out the class knowing my stuff. His class is extremely difficult, but if you take the time and apply yourself you will do fine. He's great and his discussions are aimed to really make you think. If you didn't like this class you probably did not want to learn.

He was a cool guy and the content was actually interesting. I learned a lot and he was really fair grader. Made things clear and explained things more than once. Makes the writing assignments to prepare you for college classes. Helped me be a better writer.

He is an amazing professor, I actually learned a lot and overall how all the U.S was founded which is something everyone needs to know. I like his style of teaching that I am taking his next History class 112 in Spring 2023, Thank you so much Professor Altenbernd!

He's pretty chill workload isn't too bad like literally 500 words a week. He gave very clear rubrics on most papers.

Mr. Altenbernd was honestly a great professor. I actually learned a ton of history while taking his class. He has slides instead of lectures filled with info that was very interesting. Even though there is a good amount of reading/writing, if you like history this class is the one to take. He is a little tough on grading, but overall he is solid.

I took both his Hist 111 and 112 class and they went great. No tests, only writing and other assignments, but I feel like I learned a lot. I like the movie analysis he made us do. The way this class was formatted was perfect for those who don't memorize well. It was centered more on actually interpreting historical events rather than memorization.

He makes the grading criteria clear on the first day and is pretty understanding about late work. I turned in a few papers late by roughly a week but only got 1 or 2 points marked off at most. Teaches through the use of films which makes learning history fun and more engaging.

Didn't have tests or quizzes, but we had to write around 300-500 words a week after reading a chapter from the American Yawp and other sources he provided, including super long powerpoints. Four papers, two require you to watch movies.

I took him with the accelerated 5-week course and found his class pretty straight forward and easy. Grading was pretty lenient (literally gave most people 95's on DSA's and nothing less then an 85 on analytical papers). Was ready to help his students and did a great job telling them exactly what he was looking for in writing assignments.

Definitely had to try my best in every assignment to get full credit. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, most of the time it's going to little events and it boosted me like 3%. Definitely lots of writing, but only 3 assignments a week. Usually super short discussion, decent size writing assignment, and a quiz. Met him at an extra credit and he was chill!

I liked my experience with him, and would recommend. Writing assignments were regular and your grade heavily depends on them, and the lectures are really engaging. He uses a lot of texts, and wants you to analyze history not just memorize it. I'd recommend him or Riffel, especially if history is not your favorite, they make it interesting.

Super easy class. Mix of timed quizzes, discussion posts, and short written assignments (besides final). Quizzes are all open note/open book and other assignments are very doable in the time that he assigns them. Answers emails very quickly and has a very clear grading criteria. No extra credit but if you do the work it shouldn't be a problem.

He teaches history well for an online class. Most of the things he grades are discussions and quizzes. Everything was open note and the only concern was the timing, but if you read the material, you are okay. My problem was because idk about everyone else cause they say he's good at emails, but he rarely answered mine. Other than that, he's good!

Good lectures, light amount of hw, some extra credit opportunities, attendance doesn't matter much, posts lecture slides all online, and doesn't grade that harshly at all. Not perfect but was my favorite prof this semester. Recommend taking him for this course idk about the others ill be so real
