When met with concerns about the method and pace at which Anderson teaches, student's were only met with "you guys needs to spend more time outside of class" and his cover of being "far too busy" creating lecture slides and material for all the courses he is teaching. Get ready to teach yourself or watch YouTube, and spend way too long on homework
He is a new professor who is on a power trip. Calls students lazy when they are confused on homework or lost in lectures (99% of the class is). Not properly teaching students, changed his office hours to group office hours and calls it a 'review session' as his way of helping us. Avoid taking. Gets joy out of making students' lives hard.
The worst experience I have ever had in my academic journey!!!!! Gives out excessive amount of homework everyweek to only grade 1 problem, not to mention that he also gives quizzes at every lecture. Whenever you try to approach him to ask questions, you can never really get a good, straight forward answer. Do not recommend and avoid by any means!
Prepare to be spending excessive amount of time studying on your own and working on homework problems. I would definitely recommend getting the book in order to help you learn. Lectures are heavy with a lot of material that he tries to cover by zooming through the lecture slides which leaves you sitting back in your seat. Avoid by any means!!
Beware of this professor! Daily assignments consist of pre-readings/course material videos that he will quiz you in the following class. Be prepared to teach yourself. Heavy lectures, that even with the pre-readings it is hard to follow.
I was told stats was going to be an easy class by everyone, but Andersen has made this my most difficult class by far. I thought dynamics was easier than this class. Bad lecturer too. I understand he is new, but this has been the worst class I've ever taken.
Definitely the worst professor at asu by far. Cannot teach for his life, just pointlessly clicks thru slideshows and cannot explain any questions. Also he seems like he is not very knowledgeable about the topic and you are not gonna learn anything. . He does not know the topic to even be a TA and ASU hired him as a PROFESSOR.
Just as awful in 318 as in 301. Uses the textbook but has his own methods that are more confusing. You will have to teach yourself everything in his class, so self-teach with the textbook and lecture videos from the iCourse if you can. Do yourself a favor and do everything you can to get literally any other professor or online option.
Very difficult to understand at times. Test are difficult. Assigns an egregious amount of homework. Professor Anderson is a relatively nice person, just not a great professor.
Course material moves WAY too fast for us to really understand the content. Anderson's answers are often vague and subjective leaving me confused with what is correct. The material is unclear and professor does not provide us with extra examples only with what is in the book. He's a great person but needs more help from ASU how to run a class.
Great professor, just get good kids
this guy sucks so much
He makes the easiest classes the hardest possible for students. I hate seeing him unscrew his waterbottle 14 times every class period and struggle to explain anything.
Avoid this professor if you can. He is really bad, dosent know how to teach and makes this class so difficult when it should not be this bad
Sucks
I'm gonna be as real as possible. Yes, he is above average on difficulty and not the best lecturer. However, it was his first semester of teaching while figuring things out and very open to criticism. On the first midterm he offered 20% back for doing test corrections. Don't listen to all these people spamming 1/5s, they're a bunch of crybabies.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had at ASU, not that there are many good 318 professors to begin with. If he wasn't stumbling over what he wanted to say (absolute gibberish) he was clicking through the slides faster than we could write. The class averages are so low that he's jumping through hoops to give us extra credit to pass students.
He dosent know what he is teaching. He changes the way of teaching so many times and the way he does things which is fine considering this is his first semester teaching but he teaches stuff that are not to be covered in this class and is horrible at teaching any of the concepts avoid him at all costs.
Even though this is his first semester he needs to learn how to teach. Homework that covered topics for the midterm was due the next day after the midterm and he teaches topics that are supposed to be in the class you take after this one and for the actual useful stuff he will just show you a few minutes of youtube video and that's it. Avoid him!!!
Has actually given wrong information before an exam and many times during lectures. Does no know the subject well himself so he gets confused and sometimes scraps a 40-minute problem just because he had no idea where he was going due to the many mistakes and confusion, he has caused the class.
I feel bad for what has been happening to his health, but in terms of his teaching he is not the best. I am having to spend way more time than I should on this course and I am still only scrapping by :(
I am telling you I hope ASU fires this guy. He does not deserve a job here. He refuses to listen to the entire class asking him to change his teaching style. Super unprofessional as he opens and closes his water bottle 50 times a class period which is super distracting. He is stone cold and does not have any regard for human life.
Great class. Funny professor. SUPER funny.
Awful. No other word to describe this guy other than awful. It is a statistics class but you will spend more time doing this homework than real engineering classes. His lectures are useless and make you confused. If you want to not hate yourself take another professor, please. Do anything in your power to avoid Erik Anderson at all costs.
The class itself is difficult, but Andersen does not help make it any easier. The lectures were useless and the homework was very difficult. I had to teach myself most concepts and he expects students to already know a lot of material with little to no review. I would go out of my way to not take this professor. Do not recommend.
If there was an option for "not respected" i would choose that. No one likes this guy. He grades tests like No partials but if you mess up and get the right answer, he will take the entire thing off. Everyone is failing his class. Cannot explain any concepts rather struggles to speak and stumbles over his sentence like a fifth grader.
I find it laughable that a course considered the "light" course for junior engineering was given to Professor Andersen and turned into an absolute storm of unfair exam gradings to pure ignorant insight on how to run a class from a student's perspective. Andersen was the most unconcerned and ill balanced course I've taken here at ASU.
Professors like this make me wonder who is doing the hiring at ASU. The lectures provided by Erik went beyond useless. Lectures confuse everyone and he does not care. I understand he had some medical issues mid semester, but the problems started from the very beginning. Do not take his class unless you plan to teach yourself.
Its a hard class lots of material but he test us on the most basic level and gave us many points back so I have no complaints
The rating below this is highly inaccurate... when you have multiple reviews that all say the same thing and then there's only one other person that says different... listen to the mass
I have little interest in the subject, so enjoying it was always going to be difficult. If you like the topic and are willing to put extra time towards reviewing, it shouldn't be difficult to do well with Andersen. He's a perfectly fine teacher for people who are interested in the course, but struggles to motivate those who aren't so enthusiastic.
I would give this review a 0 if I could. Andersen feels like a deer lost in headlights when explaining concepts within the course during lecture. He seems like a good person but definitely is not equipped to teach others. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
This is just sad :( I have never hated a class more in my entire academic career
Andersen made this class more difficult than it needed to be. He spent more time on explaining topics that are taught in 417 (bode plots, state space, etc.) than he did on nailing the foundation of controls. This led to a mess of a semester, with the final exam being the cherry on top with having the highest difficulty of all the exams. Very fun.
It was his first semester teaching, so I almost want to cut him slack. However, he repeatedly disregarded students' needs an continued pushing when he new the class was struggling. We changed the class structure 3 times and he made up rules like points for effort and a mysterious curve made things extremely vague. Terrible inconsiderate teacher
The material covered in Andersen's MAE318 class is very tough, and due to some factors outside of the professor's control, became an extremely difficult class. However, Andersen gave our class plenty of breaks, such as offering a large sum of points back in the form of midterm corrections. He is also very helpful when needed outside of class.
I would've given him two stars but I don't give partial credit
Didn't even take his class and I know he's bad. edit Taking him now and can confirm he is bad.
Avoid at all costs if you can. I learned nothing and was worried I would even pass going into every exam. His lectures were poorly cropped screenshots from the textbook, and he leaves out the important parts. Exams were graded on correctness, no partial credit. If this is what all of engineering was like, I would've dropped out in my first year.
Anderson is a terrible lecturer and his class format is the worst I have ever seen. He is indecisive and changes his format all the time because students are failing his class. He makes 318 way more difficult than it needs to be and teaches material that does not need to be taught. No partial credit is wild.
Difficult class, but you learn a lot. No exams, instead you have weekly quizzes with a couple questions. They are all or nothing, 100% or 0%. Each quiz topic is offered at least 3 times, but the questions are slightly different. Homework is participation based. The professor is passionate about teaching, but the class structure isn't for everyone.
Lectures were 45 plus per day on average twice a week and expected students to understand thoroughly the material when it wasn't explained or taught properly in the first place. Reading through lectures and already made examples does NOT help students. Exams are extremely difficult and our not lined well with lec. Save yourself avoiding this class!
Has weekly quizzes. If you go to office hours they do problems EXTREMELY SIMILAR to the actual quiz problems. Only need to know 2-3 problems very well per week. No tests, homework is based on completion which he gives you the solution ahead of the deadline. Quizzes are all or nothing but you get multiple chances for each. Passing is on you.
Honestly I didn't think this class was that bad. Most of the homework assignments you can find the answers to online which is ultimately how I learned the material. His lectures are mid so watch some videos on the side. He also requires attendance on iClicker. Midterm and finals are worth like 15-20%, and the project is 30%
I don't think Andersen deserves a 1.6 rating. His class is hard, but if you show up, pay attention, and go to office hours you will be fine. Stats is a hard class, and he grades the exams pretty hard, but he gave test corrections for the midterm, and let us revise our projects and resubmit it for a better grade.
Anderson gets a really bad rep, but he is caring and approachable, his lectures are dry and the exams are tough. He tries his best to engage with the class and is easy to talk to in office hours, that being said the course overall wasn't great and i learned most from the group project. Get a good group project and do all the hw's you should pass.
Wasn't the best
Professor Andersen went way too fast in his lectures and the slides he posted online were terrible also. A little over 50% of the total grade was due on the last two days of class (the group project and the final) so you never really know your grade until the end. I would definitely avoid if you have a stacked semester and wait for someone else.
Grading is unclear and feels too punishing. Makes things more confusing than they need to be. Avoid if you can.
worst proffesor in the entire university, bad teacher and clearly doesn't the student to succeed in engineering.
I believe this overall rating to be inaccurate, and if you take his class you'll understand it is a result of voluntary sampling bias. Dr. Andersen may get a bad wrap because the classes he has taught/teaches are extremely difficult(MAE 301&MAE 318), but not because he is a bad professor. Do not let his RMP rating deter you from taking his class.
Andersen gets a bad wrap for the other classes but he is a great Capstone professor. He leaves good feedback and is pretty forgiving. Just make sure all your team members show up to each lecture, especially the presentations, and you'll get an A as long as you actually try with your project.
301 is a tough course, and Andersen does very little to help you understand it. Lectures are on slides that provide little info. Turning in any HW that's incomplete, even if it's just a subpart of a larger problem, you will immediately lose HALF the credit for the whole assignment. Harsh grader, rough exams, and poor lectures. Avoid if possible.
Never in my life have I ever felt more retard*ed coming out of a class like this one. Dude yaps more than an auctioneer, to the point that I have a better chance of understanding Godzilla from Eminem than this guy. He also does attendance on I clicker. I think he does this because if he didnt no one would show up to this waste of a class
Part 2: of review from below. To get straight to the point, avoid this man at all costs if you don't want to end up being special by the end of the class. Homie will teach you everything you don't need in class and then have his way with you just for the fun of it. He seems, irritated all the time too. Honestly, he just needs to get l*aid.
Andersen could not care less about your success in the course. Uses "holistic" grading which is his way of deciding whether or not you pass his class regardless of the correctness of your response. Lectures are dozens of bland slides with no real explanation of topics. Take the class online is my advice as showing up is a waste of your time.
This class had me constantly fighting to stay afloat. He assigns so much homework, only for one question to be graded. He is not very helpful if you have questions, and seems to not care at all about the students in his class. This class is doable, get a good group to work with for the final project and go to office hours.
Lecture slides are some of the worst I've ever seen. Andersen doesn't explain concepts well at all and you're constantly learning by yourself. Exams are doable but his grading makes it very easy to lose 5% of your grade off one tiny error like a missing assumption. Talking to him one on one can be a drag too, he comes off as condescending.
Don't, just don't
I had him for 318 and his class was easy and straightforward. Weekly quizzes graded pass/fail with multiple attempts each. His RMP rating was accurate a couple of years ago, but it no longer is. His class is much better than you would think.Very approachable and wants you to succeed.
Anderson is one of those professors that takes a relatively easy subject like statistics and makes it significantly more difficult by his poor lecturing and incomprehensible slides. Not to say you cant succeed, because again, its statistics, but it wont be because of him.
Take a few seconds to read the only 4 and 5 rating, and you'll quickly notice that it is Dr. Anderson writing them. "voluntary sampling bias", and "his rating was accurate a couple years ago, but no longer is". How would the same student know the difference in how he taught a years ago vs. now? No student speaks like that. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Honestly the class wasn't the worst I've had, but I get the rating because he's just kind of annoying, plus the mandatory attendance builds up the hatred throughout the semester
I previously left a bad review for his stats class, but he's decent for capstone. You learn a lot in his class and he is extremely helpful in guiding groups to the right place. Only issue is that the assignment revision system and grading sucks. You can get only positive comments and somehow lose points on assignments. Grading is a bit unclear.
He clearly doesn't want to be here & it shows with his draining whatever demeanor from his lectures to the fact that he's completely useless in office hours to the point to where I learned more from the TAs than him. Which is unfortunate as his quiz format is better than traditional exams. Stay clear of him if you can.
Statistics is not a hard concept. Why is his class so much more difficult than all the other professors who teach it?
Professor Andersen is highly knowledgeable and clearly knows his stuff. He expects students to learn concepts quickly, for example the first midterm covered 400+ slides. He's great if you're very passionate about statistics. He's much harder than other professors, making him a very challenging choice. Other professors HW's are much shorter
Do not take this professor for any course. Seriously the worst professor I have had in my educational career. He was horrible for MAE 301 and I am not stuck with him for MEE 342. Just as bad, makes me seriously hate the subject even when the subject is simple. Makes everything as difficult as possible.
Andersen makes it hard to give the benefit of the doubt. Relies on McGraw Hill for homework, gives no partial credit, and assigns tedious readings. His dry lectures, bad handwriting, and refusal to post notes make learning frustrating. iClicker questions are rushed, and class feels like an endurance test rather than real education. Needs 2 get laid
So obviously here for the research as he is the laziest professor. Homework and attendance are harshly graded for no reason. Lectures are stale and he refuses to post any supplemental stuff to help his own students such as the many videos we know he has covering tehe course topics which are much better than his teaching. Do not take at all costs.
Lazy, horrible teaching style, not forgiving. Almost seems like he wants you have the hardest time possible trying to succeed in any of his courses.
I am for the most part a straight A student. This is the first class I nearly failed. Makes statists 1000x harder than it needs to be. Let me add, nearly failing was not due to lack of effort. I went to both TA office hours & his own every week. Your questions are met with him asking questions ultimately leading to you just being confused.
In the case for this professor, the 1-star reviews are all pretty accurate. Avoid him. He is lazy and couldn't care less if you succeed.
He teaches the material in a way that makes it easy to understand. However, the tests are graded more harshly than any I've ever seen, and he doesn't tell you what he took points off for and doesn't post the solutions either.
I took his Intro to Matlab class. He made the classes useless. I commute, and let me tell you the number of times I was halfway through my commute or already on campus, and he would email that the class was cancelled or that it was office hours. Overall, he's okay. It's just a lot of homework, and you can't count on him.
Ok, I know this professor has mostly bad reviews but I, for one, actually enjoyed this class. It was first time teaching MEE342 and I think he did a pretty good job. His grading criteria is an adjustment but I do think it comes from a good place. Just do the work, show up to class, and write as much on your equation sheets, and you will be fine.
This professor is terrible. This is my first time taking an online course where the professor does not appear in any lecture videos. He uploaded a random online professor's video as a module for the class and never taught anything in this class. Midterm and Finals are graded unnecessarily hard, with no partial credit for 60% of the exams.
Study the material and you'll be fine. Unlimited cheat sheets, and all equations are on slides.
I mean this sincerely: the good ratings this professor has are genuinely incorrect or lies. He teaches nothing, literally. He uses completely outdated or borrowed sources for teaching. He drops exam averages on purpose. He also has some sort of resentment issue with students, and absolutely despises helping them. On a power trip. Avoid, please…
He drops exam averages on purpose. He does not use his own material to “teach.” He has horrible communication issues towards students, and will not help you in times of need. You also aren't allowed to reach out to him unless it's on his terms—it's in his syllabus. Laziness is an understatement. Just disrespectful to students.
The lectures were someone else's, and the professor purposely dropped exam grades because the grade distribution was 'not to his liking.' He went to the extent of giving no partial credit on exam problems in order to get grades down. Throughout the entire course, the professor seemed lazy. I would not recommend taking this course with him.
Most of the tests were similar problems to his lecture slides. Unlimited cheat sheets on tests can be useful, but understanding the material is key. Can be convoluting when responding to questions, but he still provides all the necessary information to pass the class.
Terrible lectures that were entirely separate from homework. Homework took forever, make sure to work with classmates. Our final had unlimited cheat sheets which was the biggest waste of time. If you're into that then go ahead
The worst professor you can get. switch at all costs!
Not a bad professor, runs through the slides quite fast but beyond that its not too bad. Quiz heavy class, participation recorded with iclicker.
7 quizzes for the class, 2 lowest dropped. Sound easy enough on paper, except that you either get full points for the quiz or 0 on the quiz, with a correction that recovers 60% of your grade. Two questions per quiz, both worth 5 points, one easy one ridiculously hard. It's basically made to be impossible for an A, but easy enough to pass with a C.
Class Avg(Weights) - PT83.22% (10%), HW83.96% (15%) Ex1: 58.8% (25%), Ex2: 59.2% (25%). FP: 61.1% (25%). Ex1 corrections given for max 23% back. No corrections given Ex2. (Exam date pushed back 2 days) Final Exam swapped for Final Project less than 1 month before class ends. Make a sign error? -5% exam score. Class Avg Final Grade 71.44%(C). AVOID.
Midterms are worth 50% of total grade. Only corrections on the first. Failing avgs for both. Over 100 slides per class. Didn't curve even though 2nd exam avg was 57%. HW takes 2+ hours (around 10 Hws, 1 due each week). Stats isn't hard, but profs grading scale / no partial credit on midterms makes class averages awful. AVOID+TAKE ONLINE!!!
midterms worth 50% of total grade. Failing avgs on both, only corrections on exam 1. Didn't curve/round or give EC. 100+ slides per class, grades everything himself so grades take forever. Mandatory iClicker. Stats isn't hard, but his grading skill makes the avgs bad. Lives by his syllabus, makes no adjustments to assist students.AVOID/TAKE ONLINE.
