a highly entertaining and informative teacher. had quite a few laughes. much, if not ALL, of the finals are the same questions as the take-home quizzes. all i really did all semester to pass was remember the quizzes and memorize a relatively small chart.

A really great guy. As long as you do the quizzes, you'll pass, since every test question is taken word for word from the quizzes. Bonus points for making the world of rocks entertaining.

A very funny and informative teacher! A very interesting lecture course. As long as you do all the take home quizzes correctly, then you are good for taking each of the exams. Very clear cut, not trick questions.

Very cool, energetic, explains clearly, and assigns take-home quizes. I really enjoy his class. Tests are 65% on quizes, and 35% on over-head lecture notes. I manage with a B+ on that class. I recommend you to register for this class!

Ok sorry to break to you guys... But this class is so stupid... If you want to learn about evolution (THEORIES) and how scared Dr. Benders is by living in california take this class. I really think its a pain in the butt and a waste of time to have to do the take home quizzes. Napoelean Rulez.

each test consists of 500 POINTS....this is ridiculous....the higher points that are on an exam means the lower chance you will have of getting a "very high" score.....questions on the test are not that easy somewhat difficult....but do your best and should get at least a B.

He is so funny!!The only H.W are the take home quizzes, which are easy. If you dont have a few answers just get to class a bit early and ask anyone. Everyones usually outside copying off eachother b4 class. Eric doesnt mind at all. The takehome quizzes practically are the test. B4 the test he gives u a studyguide and the answers to the quizzes.

USE THE BOOK FOR THE QUIZZES! I didn't do that and ended up with a high B when I could've gotten an A. He's an awesome teacher- makes geology a somewhat interesting subject. This guy is ridiculously easy and a riot to boot! He has take home quizzes and his tests... well, there's nothing to fear in this class. I had his regular lecture and his honors lab and got an A in both. You will remember what this man teaches, I guarentee it.

This guy is an absolute comedian. He will definitely try to scare you into moving out of California because of the earthquakes. Obviously 80% of people taking the class will get an A, the other 20% should get wiped from the gene pool. Jokes are funny as hell (I mean REALLY funny). You will NEVER have it this good anywhere!

bender is crazy. says the weirdest things and makes the weirdest faces. my friends and i still joke about them. class was hard though and i couldnt take it seriously. he also lets students sit together and talk the whole time. doesnt care if you show up or not. beware though, if you dont study your sure to fail.

Tests questions are 50% from the online quizes, 50% from the lecture. The online quizes were the only thing I disliked from the class. They seem to have material that wasn't covered in the lecture. Overall pretty easy class. I would recommend Bender to anyone needing a Science Class for their General Ed.

this class is really easy if you study the online quizzes and the lecture notes. he writes the lecture notes for you, so all u have to do is copy them. I took him for geol 100H/180 and for the geol 100H lab class. His lecture class was pretty ok but as for his lab class it was difficult. He is a great teacher though. He knows exactly what he's talking about. He is one of the smartest teachers I've had at OCC. Extremely recommended. I got an A both in his lecture and lab class.

really easy class and im not even got at identifying rocks or else i would have gotten a better grade and i still got a B. i have the 3 hour class and i havent been in the class more than an hour and a half once so far. lectures about the lab material for like 30 mins, gives directions about lab, you do it, leave when ur done with it. take it!!!!!

Lectures are funny and coming to class helps you get points. Online quizzes kinda suck eggs but don't really count against you at the end of you grade. The tests are mainly on the notes in class and the quizzes. No need to bring book to class but do need it when you take quizzes.

Study the lectures notes, memorize all the answers to the quiz questions. 70% of exam questions come directly from the quizzes, 30% from lecture notes. Very easy class if you study and be attentive. Erik is very funny. Sneak out quietly if you want to leave early. Otherwise he'll ridicule you. Class ALWAYS starts late and sometimes leaves early.

Awesome professor. Explains things as clearly as he could (and as many times as needed). Although most peeps should have studied more. Sometimes I wish he didn't help people as much as he did and would just move on. We spent too much time going back. Very interesting class if you get a chance take it when he teaches it again next fall.

Bender is one of my favorite teachers. He's very intense but always makes you laugh. You have to take quizes online but those arn't that bad. This class is extremely easy!! There's 10 quizzes, and 4 tests for the semester. The quizzes are done online, so you can use the textbook. YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO CLASS AFTER THE FIRST DAY!! (EXCEPT FOR THE TESTS) He's really passionate about the subject, but doesn't force it onto his students. He curves the grades!! Easy, funny teacher!! TAKE HIM!

Easy A. His way of teaching is quite interesting, it is all about "How you are going to die" in terms of the world coming to an end. teachers is easy. there are three exams, kinda easy, most of the questions are from the quizzes and other half from the book. there are clicker questions which are easy points to get. you have to go to class because the clicker questions are in class and cannot be made up.

Bender is an AWESOME teacher! He totally cracks the whole class up every lecture. He explains the subject very well. The quizes every week are annoying but easy and the tests are pretty tricky. Easy class. You got 50 online quizzes each week and the Exams are 80% based of the online quizzes. The other 20% is from lectures. Attend class, because there are 100 clicker questions and you must be present in order to receive credit. Put it this way, I attended 10/16 weeks of class and came out with a B. Easy A as long as you attend.

Its all memorization of different rock types, lava types, sand vs. silt, etc. I slacked off because I was so bored by it and got a C. The online quizzes are tedious and take forever. Here's the deal: You have to put in the effort and time to do well. If you don't, you WILL fail. You have to show up (take good notes) and do the quizzes and study what he says, but if you do, it's a relatively simple class. Not a big fan of his personality, but he's an EXCELLENT teacher, and shows you why geology matters in the real world.

I would say one of the easiest teachers for science out there. Just do the online, at home, open textbook quizzes each week. Then study them. More than half the exams are straight from the quizzes and more than half your grade is based on quizzes. He grades on a huge curve too. Totally recommend.

Overall Geology is a hard class but erik actually made it fun. Hes funny and this is a class you won't regret taking. Attendance isn't mandatory for points but if you don't go you wont pass and ur an idiot if you think you will

I loved this guy! Funny and charming and explained material in a way I got it as best as I could for a non Science non left braine dperson like me. I emiled him alot with questions and he always responded and was very helpful. Great Professor. OCC is so fortunate to have him. When I left I told him I liked him a lot but Science blows!

This was the only class and lab available during my registration time and boy was taking it a mistake. The amount of material covered is insane, Tests are not multiple choice like his 100 class and the amount of work with this class and the lab is more than my other 3 classes combined. Only taking this class if youre a geol major, if not take 100

Yes you have to study and fulfill the assignments but he is pretty easygoing with grading. Overall, you learn a lot and there is a big chance for A.

This class is easy A -- if you put in effort. Stay in class and listen to his lectures; his 'visual' presentation will allow you to remember and recall thing during the exams better than the notes. Study the quiz since its also in the exam. Do the extra credit. Overall very fun class! Bender is a very apocalyptic person.

I took Erik for general Geology lecture and lab. He is the best teacher I have had. He is straight forward, understanding, helpful, and funny. He helps you understand difficult concepts. He makes science approachable. He knows his subject extremely well and he truly loves what he teaches. You'll learn a lot from him and you'll never forget it!

I took this class to get my physical science requirement out of the way and now I am a geology major--Bender makes it fun, interesting, and easy to understand. I loved coming to this class, also, easy A if you just take the online quizzez on time and study a little for the tests :)

I found this class rather easy and he tries to keep geology as entertaining as possible. BUT, just keep in mind there is a decent amount of busy work(2 hours a week approx) doing online quizs + extra credit. Overall I would suggest it but its not a total walk in the park.

Really easy and funny teacher. The material is really easy to understand. He does have a lot of online and in-class quizzes though, but they are all very easy open-note/book quizzes and the exams are just the questions off the quizzes so if you do those you'll do fine (at least a B). He does try to scare you with talk of natural disasters though. But overall fun easy class.

Great teacher. Makes the class interesting even though it was with 500 students. Extremely easy 3 online tests and 10 online quizzes with about 100 points worth of extra credit. Great teacher, answers all questions and its really good about answering emails. I highly recommend taking his class.

Bender is one of the best teachers at OCC. He is extremely dedicated to what he teaches, Geology, and is great at doing so. His lectures are fun, adventurous, and highly informative. His lecture class is easier than his lab class because around 90% of the material (homework, quizzes and tests) that gets graded, is online. Highly Recommended!

Adored this man. Funny and so excited about his work. He was infectious. Hard class though. Tests and online homework had some math & chem in it so really hard for me. More of conceptual tests. Very hard for me but he was helpful and made it a point to always tease me when math was on the board. Loves his job!

Bender is the single most brilliant and hilarious professors I have had the honor of learning with. Treats his students like colleagues. Cares about your understanding, great analogies to the material, definitely knows his subject. DONT take this class if youre looking to breeze thru, he introduces a subject as though you intend take it further.

Great class. Lecture hall in RBM theatre. You need a clicker for this course, so come prepared with that! Lectures are engaging and interesting. The tests are easy. Offered extra credit to my class, not sure if that's usual. Clicker-use is daily for attendance and questions. They are easy and a major point factor. Do it.

Great professor, very clear and very funny. He didn't assign any readings or HW from the text book. If you have him for the large forum class you will need a clicker. The clicker questions are directly from the notes in the previous class. ALSO, the clicker questions are word for word questions that he asks on the Exams. You're welcome.

Attendance is mandatory for clicker points. Class is extremely easy; his notes are great, he's an entertaining teacher, he has tons of EC, his tests are easy, class are curved, ect. Seriously, just take the class. Easy and fun A with zero effort, and you'll learn a lot too.

This is an easy SCIENCE class; basically don't expect to get an A without doing any work like in humanities classes. I highly recommend taking lecture with lab; the people who didn't struggled the most on tests because they didn't memorize the minerals/rocks. As long as you memorize those things you will do fine else tests are pretty challenging.

Great professor. He's a great speaker and uses metaphors to help students very effectively. Definitely a funny and interesting guy also. However, he doesn't take complaining, BS, or annoyances during his class. He's a smart guy, stick around and talk to him after classes.

one of my favorite professors and everyone i talk to likes him too. hes hilarious and explains everything clearly. i personally like geology and this guy made it even more interesting for me. tests are pretty difficult. you gotta really study to get a decent grade. at least for me. i had friends that aced every single one of his tests.

I only took Geology to fill my physical science requirement, but honestly Erik made me love it! It's clear he's very passionate about teaching. The way that he writes notes on the overhead is very clear and he even adds drawings which help a lot. Very supportive if you need help with anything. I would absolutely take this class again.

Bender really cares about his students and makes his lectures super interesting with his cheesy jokes. Even if you do average on the tests, he gives a lot of extra credit which can boost you up to an A. Study and pay attention and you'll get an easy A. Also, I don't have the textbook and you don't need it either! All quiz answers online too.

Literally the best teacher I've ever had. He makes alot of funny voices and his jokes are hilarious. The class was extremely easy as long as you pay attention to his lectures and take very good notes. His presentations were one hour each and he had mini quizzes either before or after evert lecture, it was random, but they were all easy. Take him!

He's a wonderful teacher! he's hilarious, fun, very intelligent, you will at least learn from him. He's very fair, and lets you take make up tests if you miss a exam. Get your clicker as soon as you can though, that really helps. All and All, he's a wonderful teacher and even is making me consider changing my major since he made Geology so cool.

If you take good notes on everything he writes on the board or says in class you won't need the textbook and as long as you prepare for the tests like he tells you to (online quizzes/in class questions) you should be able to get an A. Best teacher I've had at OCC I took his intersession class and it went by so fast and seemed to be really easy!

Erik's a great teacher. All of his homework, quiz questions, and test questions can be found online. Mostly found on quizlet and study blue. Study the quiz questions and you'll pass the tests. I got C's on every test but did most of the extra credit options, and i passed the class with a B. Attendance is mandatory because you earn points.

Erik's great! There are no pop quizzes in this class, only participation questions (which you can use your notes for) and his tests are straight from lectures, which follow his book. Definitely recommend taking him for Geology!

Bender is a great teacher! If you study his quizzes, his clicker questions, and go over the study guides he provide you then you're good to go! No actual real homework except for the weekly online quiz on blackboard. You don't really need the txtbook to pass but it was helpful for me to have it in hand. Try not to miss class cuz there's clicker q.

Easy class to pass if you study and try. You do not need the textbook if you take good notes. His lectures are straight from the book and his tests are lecture material. He gives study guides for each exams and his quizzes/clicker questions are exam questions. Take him for geology and you're guaranteed to pass if you put effort in.

I've never had a teacher so passionate about science. He makes you look at the world around you differently. Online quizzes for the chapters, 4 exams throughout the semester, and daily clicker questions for participation points. The exams count for 80% of the grade so STUDY HARD. Its not an easy A, but if you study hard a good grade is attainable.

Hands down to the best teacher ever! Literally, I'm not a fan of science although I always passed them but I never got anything in return. Dr. Bender is really passionate and made class very interesting! 4 exams and 10 quizzes so not a lot but trust me he is worth taking! I had him for lecture and lab and I always tried to never miss his classes.

His Labs are so interesting and you must be there to get all the material you need for the exams! Although his exams are open note, if you don't understand the material well or just copy from your lab mates you won't pass! 3 exams and 10 lab assignments plus a virtual field trip. Awesome class, I would definitely take it again! No regrets!

It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard. Get your clickers as soon as possible and try not to miss too many classes. The tests are 100 questions, 4 tests in total. One online quiz every week, answers can be found online. Try to do all the extra credit offered, it made my grade go up one letter. Erik is an amazing professor and I grew to love Geology.

I love Bender! He honestly made Geology so enjoyable. Show up to class, pay attention to the lectures, take notes, and you'll be fine. I got an A on every test. The way he lectures is different from other professors and it's honestly the best way to lecture in my opinion. Take him if you can!!!

In my 7 years of school, Bender has become my favorite proffessor of all time. .He may come across as unapproachable but once you get to know him, he really grows on you. He even convinced me to become a Geo Major. regardless of your interest in geology, take his class, you won't regret it. his tests are hard but manageable, and the labs are fun.

Easiest A, I ever took. Don't need a book, just copy the notes that he writes. He also tells you what is important to know because it will be on the test 100%. All his tests are usually 50% old quizzes, and lecture notes. He has quiz every week basically but you can find all the answers from your notes or search it on studyblue or quizlet.

Best professor ever- take him before he retires

Erik's Geology A105 class was the most interesting and relevant class I've taken at a community college. I believe what distinguishes a good professor from a great professor is not only the wealth of knowledge they possess, it is also evident in how much they enjoy teaching. If you have Erik this Spring '18, consider yourself lucky.

He is so funny, but the class is not so good if you don't like science.

Hes a good professor. Do not miss class and do not forget to do the quizzes online. Exams are straightforward, some taken from the quizzes. He is a very humorous professor. However, he said he would curve grades but he never did for some of our exams so i got a 89.2% . Do not rely on curve and extra credit. Do all the work and you'll pass easily.

I'm taking his class in this semester and so far I can say that he is a great professor. He knows what he teaches and he loves doing his job. Easy going with students and willing to help you when in need. 50% of his tests are questions he has done in the quizzes. Quizzes are done with use of a Clicker (iClicker not accepted).

Grades on a curve. Uses clicker-questions for in class points, up to 20 daily so attendance is important. He makes the class interesting, doesn't require a textbook, no HW. Basically, show up and be awake to pass the class.

Erik loves his field. He shares a lot of information in very funny lectures, does not require a book and you don't need it. He loves to go off on tangents so if you are interested in a specific topic ask him, he will talk about it! You have to go to class because you only learn from the lectures. He curves so top grade is always 100% in class

Take this class! Not just rocks, but an education of Earth and all its FAULTS. Be ready to learn about the extremes our little planet has gone through. A great professor who cares about his student. Homework is heavy, but Erik gives you all you need to know before each assignment. Loved the class and actually learned a few things.

I took the honors section for both lecture and lab (105M). Make sure to focus during lecture and stay on top of the material considering the tests are difficult. You need to work really hard for an A. Lecture consists of clicker questions every time, sos make sure to bring it and answer the question correctly. Easy "physical science" GE.

I would highly recommend this class! Erik writes down the notes while teaching, so you always know what to take notes on. There are clicker questions every class, so make sure you go. These questions are open notes. Most of the tests consist of past quizzes, so study the quiz questions. He also grades on a curve which is always great.

Erif made his class very enjoyable ans fairly stress free. I took him for general geology lecture and lab (both online) and it couldn't have been a smoother class. He records all zoom lectures for later reference and emails back very quickly. Everything was thoroughly explained and assignments were graded more on completion vs accuracy.

Prof. Bender's class was strictly online without zoom interaction, therefore, we had to copy his pre-recorded lecture notes and study for exams on our own. The class was fairly easy, as long as you review old quizzes and new information, exams will be a breeze. Class is graded only by quizzes and exams (all m/c on canvas). Responds to emails fast.

His pre recorded lectures provided everything you needed to pass. His exams were pretty long, but it's all material that he actually goes over. If you ever needed any help he was great with answering emails.

Lab assignments were due weekly, but they weren't too difficult. We also had to buy a rock and mineral kit for this lab. His lectures were recorded and attendance wasn't mandatory. He always answered questions, but with the way he explained everything, there weren't many. Great professor, I highly recommend him!

In my opinion, Professor Bender is the best college professor at OCC. His lectures, quizzes, labs, and exams are all so clear that even though I had lost all inspiration for education due to COVID, I had a blast during his classes because I was not scared of failing a test! He made everything absolutely amazing. He is a very very good prof. 10/10!

His grading is heavily dependent on tests and quizzes, so if you're not great with tests I would avoid this class. However, he offers study guides prior to every test and there are loads of study material online. Probably the easiest science course you can take.

I didn't do anything for this class. It's so easy. I took the six-week course in the summer so there were 2 quizzes every week. There are 3 exams. ALMOST EVERY SINGLE QUESTION is on Quizlet. I didn't look at a single lecture, just google the questions. Highly suggest

Knowledgeable professor, online lectures are packed full of information and he keeps the subject fun and enjoyable. Didn't think I would be so excited to learn about Rocks! Watch the lectures and read the material and you will do fine on the tests. Study guides help but he does have all the information in the lectures. Highly suggest taking!

I really enjoyed having Erik as my geology teacher, He is really nice and funny and doesn't seem to care if you show up or not. There was no HW just quizzes and tests. Unless you're in the lab class as well. His tests can get a bit difficult and they are usually 100 questions. I overall really enjoyed him as a teacher.

I took Erik Bender for both Lecture and Lab. In lab he was extremely helpful when there was any confusion. He did not take attendance and as long as you were there for lab lectures and explanations you would be set. Sometimes there would only be 2 people who showed. Erik ALWAYS helped me out + gave me great tips and tricks for any questions I had.

He is an amazing professor. He likes to do some voice impressions during his lectures which made it pretty fun. All his lab tests were open notes. Class met twice a week: the first day was his lecture/explanation day and start of lab with the second day being for any remaining lab work you had to do (basically if you are done, no need to show up).

I absolutely loved Bender's lecture!! It felt like an actual college class, you don't need a textbook or anything you just go to class, he lectures and you take notes. He is very funny, great at explaining concepts and there is 4 exams which are pretty much your entire grade but if you pay attention and use the study guides you're golden!

Loved this class and Erik. I learned a lot and he made the subject interesting. The lectures were great and easy to follow; maybe a little slow on getting to the information. The 4 tests were the majority of the grade but they were pretty difficult if you didn't really understand everything. This class isn't an easy A. You have to study!

It was a great experience having Erik Bender be one of our higher ups during NCAS mission 3. He cared a lot about us 4 teams and would offer a massive amount of opportunities like facility tours, internships, and overall motivation to keep us focused on our projects during the week. Erik is really open to students and is willing to help you!

Professor Bender is amazing! Before taking this course I thought for sure I was going to be bored out of my mind but he made the material fun with his corny jokes. Exams are difficult but most answers are available on Quizlet. Grades are curved at the end of the semester.

He's a really funny guy and gives interesting lectures, but he's close to retirement so he might seem a little done XD. I had him for lecture and lab- the lab was a lot more challenging for me. REALLY pay attention and do written notes bc he draws a lot. There are also online morning quizzes in lecture that you download an app for. ANSWER QUICK!

Erik was an engaging professor who made geology interesting but this course is NOT an easy A. He takes attendance for the lecture class via warm up quizzes. If you take good notes during class and follow review guides you'll be fine for the exams. However he'll most likely never respond to your emails so just go find him in person.
