Dr. Collins is fantastic. You will want to go to class. Enough said. :)
This guy is a great teacher. Honestly, he has made me want to have a career in Media Law. That's how great this class was. Take it!
If all else fails...wear a short skirt!
Collins is the best teacher ever!! Go to class and you will make a good grade! And... you will want to go to class!! :)
Hard Tests, you learn a lot, will call on you, be prepared. very attractive!!
I loved him soooo much. I will miss this class more than any other. Take him and don't be embarrassed about being called on. He doesn't even care if you call him at 2 A.M. with a question! The coolest and smartest guy-take class--good grade in the end
What a funny guy! Very interesting class. Make sure you prepare for class.. he will call on you and will not accept "I dont know" as an answer.
Teaches with the socratic method. Do not take him unless you like being singled out in class. I have a hard time understanding his cult following.
There are not words in the dictionary to describe this man .He is the most sarcastic person ,and professor I have met.I observed in class how he will single a student out ,and make them feel unsure of themself. Avoid taking him.Take J bender ,or MBashri !
You learn a LOT in the class and he's wicked funny. Yeah, he'll call on you, but it's usually pretty funny. My friend called him when he got busted for selling pot and Collins said he'd help him out (he's a lawyer). They guy is great, I got a C, but I don't care, it was worth it.
You will have a lot of information thrown at you but it's not too bad. He's an interesting guy that really knows his stuff. GO TO LECTURES...THE BOOK WILL NOT HELP! The tests are essay form but are pretty easy as long as you listen to what he is saying.
Erik Collins is my hero, no kidding. This class was tough, but I looked forward to each Tues/Thurs last semester because of it. He's hilarious AND knows his sh*t. The tests suck--you'll be exhausted after each one. But there's no homework & he's gracious grade-wise, believe me. TAKE and LOVE!!
awesome teacher, awesome class. he's my hero.

Totally awesome teacher, one of the very best.
Hilarious and very interesting guy...he'll definitely single you out and you better be ready to fire off a response even if you don't know for sure it's right (although it helps if it is). He makes class interesting, and tests are challenging but if you listen you'll be ok b/c he curves.
Everything these guys have said is true. He does essay exams and the more info you know, the better. Pay attention to detail. If you do not like being put on the spot in front of people - do not take this class!! He will call you and he will not let you off the hook for any reason.
awesome teacher. if you dont like the socratic method of teaching, this class is not for you-but you learn a lot and he really got me interested in the legal aspect of journalism! I reccomend this class to jour majors and those highly interested in media law
The exams are tough, but not impossible. He is so funny-- he keeps everyone laughing. Class is rarely if ever boring. I LOVE this man. And don't be embarrassed about being called on-- it's not that bad. I really enjoyed this class. Oh and I don't know why it says so, bc he's not hot. He's 70!
Tough class, go to every class and keep your notes organized. Study like crazy and write anything and everything you can on exams. Reference cases. He doesn't start from 100 and take away points, starts at 0 and gives them. I wrote more than a whole blue book on the final. Book does not help much.
GREAT class LOVED it and Collins...learn a LOT. Go to class, you actually will feel bad about not going, or at least I did. Take notes on everything...spit back as much as you can on tests...Be prepared to get called on every single day, all class period...happened to me for the first half of the sem., but bc of it i KNEW the stuff
Take this class you will learn a lot from this man. He offers study sessions before every exam that are very helpful.
Collins is my hero...he is hilarious and knows his stuff. I at first was scared about my grade, then i got an A on all the tests!! Hes a great guy
Collins is a great teacher. If you take good notes you will get a great grade for sure. He is fair and interesting. He will call you out, and loves to put students on the spot, but after a while it becomes endearing.
DO NOT take this class if you are a business major. Nothing to do with it. Very scattered notes and a whole lot of useless information. I made an A in acct 225 and will be lucky to pull a C out of this class. Whoever said the book was not needed lied. Buy the book!!!!
I LOVE HIM! He made want to strive to become a lawyer one day. I was totally afraid of this class, but he is so much fun and really knows his stuff. take good notes and you'll do great!
Best teacher i've had at USC. Collins is really funny and actually makes this stuff interesting. He's very helpful and won't fail you if you try.
ok so i got very scared when the class first started. it is a lot of work and a lot of studying but its totally worth it. I made an A in the class but i worked really hard for it. collins is the coolest teacher in the journalism school and he really knows his stuff. TAKE HIM! He is definitely someone i'll take again if i get the chance.
Do not take this man for JOUR 303 esp if you are a JOUR major. His notes/lectures are scattered and he plays favorites. He throws out a bunch of useless info and his exams (although he gives a study guide) are insane.
Definitely recommend this class, especially Honors section. Collins will push you and put you on the spot, but you will learn a lot! He's hilarious, too. One of my favorite classes so far! Definitely go to class and take notes AND study the book and cases - a lot of work but worth it, not only for tests but also to sound smart in class!
Great professor but hard class! Covers a lot of materials. Write down everything and TAKE GOOD NOTES!! You will learn a lot. Got a C+ but I learned SO MUCH!!!!! Loved the class!
Fantastic! This is by far my favorite professor at USC. Difficult but amazing. If you came to college to learn, then TAKE COLLINS.
Collins's humor is similar to how he likes his martinis: dry. I did very little work for his class outside of reading, though it took some effort to get a solid grasp on the material. Once you do, you're set, especially if you can tell what he wants to read in your answers. Write everything you can on his tests. Great professor. Brush up on drawing
Someone said he plays favorites and this is true because I was pretty much one of them. On the first day of class, answer one of his questions and you more or less have an automatic at least a B. Because of his J303 class I have a genuine love for Media Law!
Collins is probably the best teacher I have had at USC so far. He makes you genuinely interested in Media Law. Be careful because he does like to loud people out for being "lawyers" or specialists for specific material. The encyclopedia aka your text book is unnecessary. Great class, highly recommended!
LOVE HIM! makes law SO interesting. laughed alot, ill miss that class so much. he will call you out and scare you at first but stay in the class, its fun! ALOT of info but youll learn it and love it. relaxed attendence policy but youll want to go! tests are long but do-able. no outside work. noone gets a bad grade, i got an A. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Collins is one of the best professors at USC. There is never a dull moment in his class. You will actually learn something in this class! Take good notes, and dont buy the book-it is a waste of space and money. Look up cases online.
Prof. Collins is probably the smartest man alive. He is also one of the best teachers at this university by far. His classes are fun and interesting... He uses students for real life examples and really engages everyone. I would take him for every class if i could.. I've never learned more in any other class.
redundant lecture but good guy. I didn't buy the book, cases are on blackboard or you can get more useful info. on them at oyez.org. I had him as a summer class so there was a midterm and a final, where you identify what is illegal in the scenerios he gives you.
Absolutely best professor I've had at USC. Lectures are engaging and Socratic Method found in law school keeps everyone on their toes. Knows the material extremely well. Textbook not necessary, and prepare to write a lot on the exams, but totally worth it to take Collins.
this was a tough class in that we didnt really know what to expect when it came to tests, but his teaching style is interesting if stressful
Maybe this class is better in the regular semester but I just took him for Summer 1 and the class was awful! Test are all essay, didn't use the book at all, he jumps off topic too much to follow and he calls on you and grills you for answers which just wastes needed class time. Worse teaching style I've ever encountered.
Collins is a pretty sweet dude. He's funny and a pretty solid guy for an old professor. His scenarios are usually interesting, and his method of teaching makes comprehension much easier. The night before an exam can be a bit stressful because there is so much material and he doesn't give hints as to what to study, but he WILL NOT LET YOU FAIL.
This professor is the most attentive, interesting guy i've had in my four years at USC. If you have a question, he'll answer it, anytime. He has study sessions before every exam and honestly gives spectacular examples to help you understand the material. I would take him for any class possible at any time. COLLINS FOR PRESIDENT!
Dr. Collins is the man. I had no interest in the topic but he made this one of the few classes I actually enjoyed going to over this past semester. By far the funniest professor Ive had at USC, though the class is tough.
Very low maintenance class. 1 midterm, final exam, both essay questions. Thats it for work. Book never used, don't buy it. Its huge and expensive, all needed cases are online. Entertaining and smart professor. Tests aren't easy, but workload is so light it more than evens out. Just study hard for tests and you'll do fine. Recommended.
A lawyer himself, Collins teaches the class as if it were a law school course: through the Socratic method, analyzing specific cases, and "issue spotter" exams as the sole source of your grade. If you have any interest in law school, this course is a great sampler. Collins is both demanding and enormously entertaining. Take him at all costs.
Dr. Collins is by far one of the best professors at USC. He is interesting and insightful, you can def. tell he loves his job and the atmosphere he works in. Study hard and on a daily basis. One test and a final so you don't get many chances. He is a great guy though and I would recommend him for years to come as well as take him again!
I love Dr. Collins! Show up for class and you'll be fine. You have to work to do badly.
collins is a pretty easy teacher. if you attend class and read the cases, u'll get the needed info. and he's really helpful to get you to pass the class.
Collins is an awesome teacher. He really knows his stuff and he will crack jokes and tell funny stories all throughout class and is just an overall cool teacher to have. Tests are hard though, but that comes with the class subject.
Prof. Collins makes class really interesting- he has a great dry sense of humor. You don't need the book- just look up laws and cases online and know the basics. I was pretty worried about my grade because I made a D on the first exam but I studied pretty hard for the final & made an A in the class! Take him, come to class, take notes, know cases!
Hardest class I've ever taken. The entire grade is based on lectures that aren't very clear. He doesn't give notes or tell you what to write down. Two or three tests, which are graded using some scale I didn't understand. He's a nice, funny guy who will definitely help you out and really knows what he's talking about, but this class requires work.
very nice guy, but teaches like a law school professor. As long as you come to class, participate, and seem interested you should do alright. get on his good side if possible.
I am leaving my review 26 years after having taken Dr. Collins' course. I will never forget how much I enjoyed this class. He teaches the subject in the fashion of a law professor, which is intimidating at first but ultimately challenging and highly rewarding. It would be hard to find a lecturer who knows media law as well as Dr. Collins.
Dr. Collins is the man you want to call when you're in legal trouble. He knows his stuff. He teaches like a law school professor, but it allows you to learn through different situations. The material is hard, but he sets you up to succeed. Be willing to work and study hard and you will succeed in the class.
Dr. Collins made me love this class. Definitely the best professor I have ever had. Be prepared to take good notes and study well. Both of our exams were very hard but I have never learned more from a class. He knows everything there is to know about media law. He has a hilarious dry humor and is phenomenal at teaching. Best professor I've ever had
Best professor in the J school. I looked forward to this class. Be prepared to study hard to do well though. You won't regret taking him.
Dr. Collins is honestly the best professor I've ever had. He is a tough teacher at times but really makes you learn and love the material. He's the reason I chose my future career path and I won't even be able to thank him enough for everything that he taught me.
awesome teacher but prepare to work hard! the exams are intense but he helps you get the best grade possible between your final exam and first two exams.
Dr. Collins' class is HARD. Whether you take JOUR 303 with him or Bender, the class is hard. He is funny, though, and makes up hypotheticals for you to understand the material. His teaching style takes some getting used to. Tests are all open ended questions. I'm an A/B student and was happy with a C+ in this class.
The most difficult professor I have ever had in my life, but I could think of anybody else I would rather have for media law. You won't discuss media law immediately, but be patient. I'm an all "A" student, but I got a "B+" in the class. I can say that with a smile on my face though because of how much I learned.
It's media law, so it's gonna be hard. Dr. Collins wasn't awful, he at least had a little sense of humor. Two tests worth 20% and a cumulative final worth 60%. Second test is option, you can take half a grade higher than your first exam if you want. Miraculously got an A on the first exam. Lots of reading, but I've gotten by without it so far.
Best teacher ever. Really hard class tho
Collins teaches a hard class but I loved him as a teacher. He is involved and works with students. It is a hard class but take it with him. second test is optional and you can just take a half a grade higher than you got on your first test. Class is graded 20% for test 1 and 2 and 60% for the final but the final can be your whole grade. def take w/
Amazing teacher, but if you don't come to class or get involved you will fail. Grade is based on 3 exams, but the final can be worth 100% of your grade if you do the best on it. Best teacher I've had at USC.
I have heard that professor collins is harder than the other professors that teach this class. However, I also know that the other profs are dry and boring. I always enjoyed his class and learned a lot. If you go to class, read the cases you will do fine. All his exams are open ended, so pay attention to the scenarios he talks about in class.
Dr. Collins is phenomenal. One of my favorite professors. Absolutely the best media law professor. No technology allowed so you need to take great notes by hand. Don't skip class because it's challenging but very interesting. He's very supportive! Dr. Collins is the reason I will be taking the LSATs and trying to go to law school. Take him!
Despite how your first few days in his class go, you will quickly learn Collins is a great guy. He wants you to get an A but you have to go to class. He doesn't do Powerpoints, you have to listen. His stories are fun and he goes on tangents but listen for the gist of the law. You only have 3 tests but they're on a curve. Can be easy if you listen!
Best professor I've ever had, would 100% take him again
Genuinely the best professor I've had at USC. As long as you email him he doesn't count your absences as unexcused, but you need to go to class if you want to do well in this class. He gives you every chance in the world do to well in his class and gives hypotheticals and lectures in the most interesting way possible. Seriously loved him.
Your only grades in the class are a few exams, so study and know your stuff. The final is cumulative and a huge portion of your grade, but not too bad. Everything is graded on a curve. Know definitions, cases, hypotheticals and how to argue for both sides and you should be good! Go to class and take good notes too. You get the hang of his class!
The TA does the grading. Only 3 test but 2 count. Must go to class to get notes. I left like a lawyer taking this class, it was so hard but nothing you couldn't do- you have have to study. He is so funny and entertaining. Make sure to make friends in this class because its easy to miss little important details during the long lectures.
Dr. Collins is a nice and funny person who wants you to do well. Exams are very hard, all open ended and you definitely need to study and be in class to do well on them. Your only grades are 2 exams and a final. You need to pay attention and take notes in class because he just talks at you. The textbook helps. Very easy going with attendance.
Show up, put your phone away, listen and take really good notes. 3 tests are the only thing your grade depends on. Really good guy, but I would try and take it with a different teacher if you could.
Why would you even go to USC and not take this class? I'm that dude who only showed up when I felt like it. I showed up at every single class bar one (we opened the NCAA bball season at home at 12:00pm that year, sorry!). The law is all about justice so don't be a pain in his ass! Freedom of speech is a privilege, choose your words wisely. Thanks.
Professor Collins is great but this isnt your typical class. Theres no powerpoints and his lectures are essentially him talking through the subject matter using hypotheticals and certain court cases that connect with the subject matter. The final basically counts for your entire your entire grade so make sure to do well on that.
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken in my life. Because its a law class its more difficult and DEFINITELY NOT an easy A. Since theres really only two profs who teach the class Id say Collins isnt bad but youll definitely feel like a lawyer after youre done. Also the final exam is literally is your final grade.
Hes very hard compared to other Law and Ethics teacher. The lectures are difficult to follow even though he himself is very likable. The tests are all written and really hard to understand.
dude was so funny, if you ever seen the show mad men, he is literally one of those guys, so you know he knows how to have a good time. He doesn't do powerpoints so you really got to listen in class and take notes. His exams are long but if you do your case readings and show up you'll be fine
Probably one of the best professors to have during COVID. He is very accommodating and has a passion to teach which makes his classes very enjoyable. His class is not very work heavy, and you should definitely end with a great grade.
There are only three tests, including the final and that's the only thing you are graded on. This class isn't meant to be taken online, to get the most out of it go in person. He goes on nonsense tangents and can be hard to understand at times.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He goes on useless tangents that are so irrelevant to the class. The only grades are three test that are impossible to do good on because he does not teach the material. He made this the most pointless class I have ever taken. I would never recommend him to anyone.
Professor Collins himself is a nice and likeable guy. But I would not recommend this class to anyone, he just drones on and on the entire period making it hard to understand what is important and not. There is no helpful textbook and he does not post notes. The grade of his class is only three tests that were altogether difficult and long.
Dr. Collins is the best. Any review that says otherwise probably is just mad about his no technology rule. He has the most interesting lectures filled with fun hypotheticals and stories. You need to go to class, but if you don't, just email and he will excuse you. Genuinely loves the law and loves teaching. Absolutely take him if you can.
Dr. Collins is honestly one of the nicest professors ive ever had. While his class is undeniably difficult, Its one of those classes that you enjoy. His test policy is very optional: you can take all 3 tests or simply the final. Hes a great guy and I would recommend him to anyone.
Dont get me wrong. Hes a nice guy, but his lectures are absolutely treacherous. He posts ZERO content whatsoever on Blackboard. There are ZERO power points to go along with his lecture. His lectures are really hard to follow because he babbles off. If you are a visual learner do NOT take this course. Either way, I would never take it again.
Mr. Collins is one of the best professors I have ever had. Although he lectures a lot, he is interesting to listen to. He is awesome! Attendance is optional, but you should go to class. It's super worth it.
He was super interesting but it is incredibly difficult to make a good grade in his class. This was my first ever C and I was honestly proud of it in his class. He also just made me uncomfortable from time to time. He talked about some uncomfortable hypotheticals involving his students. I understand why people liked him, but I couldn't stand him.
Dr. Collins is genuinely my favorite professor I have ever had. Dr. Collin's lectures were extremely interesting even when discussing seemingly boring concepts. While there is a lot of notetaking required, his explanation of topics makes it easy to understand and a lot of fun to learn about. Dr. Collins is a must-have professor and is so awesome.
Professor Collins was an amazing professor and a one-of-a-kind person! I LOVED his class, super interesting and he genuinely wants you to enjoy what you are learning. There are only three exams and are all written on paper, but if you go to class you will be fine. Overall great course and professor!
One of my favorite professors! Hard class, but I learned so much. Would highly recommend, especially if you want to go to law school. Grade based on 3 pretty challenging exams, but if you go to class, pay attention, take good notes, and study, you'll be fine. He's super sweet and funny! Really cares about his students and wants them to do well!
Baffling class. No assignments except for exams. He has no clue how to use blackboard and NOTHING is posted on there. There are no presentations or resources to access, and there is a textbook that is never used. He rambles on and on for an hour every class period and you have to decide for yourself what to take for notes.
His lectures are hard to follow sometimes because he writes the content illegibly on the board. There are a lot of case studies that need to be read prior to class. The final grade is determined solely by two or three exams which are somewhat difficult. However, Dr. Collins is passionate, engaging, and sweet which made the class more enjoyable.
Dr. Collins is amazing. He will make you laugh every lecture. Do not let the harsh reviews scare you if you're thinking about taking his course. He cold calls on students and pushes you to work hard. Textbook is online and free, recommended but not necessary to read. It is clear he has been doing this a long time and he knows what he is doing.
Dr. Collins uses the Socratic method to teach which can be a little intimidating at first. The class is structured like you're in law school, however, I learned SO much from him. You can tell he is very passionate about the subject matter and wants his students to succeed. Attend class, take good notes, and study. Tough but a very rewarding class.
Professor Collins' class can be challenging, but engaging with his teaching style pays off. The lectures are interesting, if a bit lecture-heavy. unstuck AI and the free textbook were lifesavers for study prep.
I love him. He had to leave teaching our class this semester early bc he had an emergency surgery but he will be missed a lot by our class. He is so smart and humorous and really smart and knows exactly what he's doing, he cares a lot about his students and wants everyone to succeed and do well, pay attention in class! It is all the help you get.
His class was very boring. He does not use blackboard so if you miss class you just miss all the information. He would make jokes sometimes but often only engaged with a couple of students in class. If you are a visual person I would not take this class. The tests were the only grades in the whole course.
I loved Dr. Collins. Hands down, one of the best professors I have ever had at USC. Wish I could take him again! Treats his class like law school, which was intimidating at first, but I learned to love it! I learned so much from his class since no computers were allowed, and I wasn't easily distracted. Can't recommend him enough.
Funny guy but that's the only positive. No technology allowed, lectures the whole class without using a presentation or writing anything down. The whole class is 3 exams, with final being cumulative. If he calls your name in class, prepare to be the only one answering hypotheticals and q's that can last multiple class periods. Attendance graded.
Pretty nice guy and engaging. He's very old school though. He makes you handwrite your notes (unless you have an accomodation that allows you to use technology.) The only things going in the gradebook are your tests, which are not easy. There's no homework. So you have to study a ton for the tests.
He's a phenomenal professor, can tell that he is very knowledgeable in this area. If you really want to learn the material, I would take him. The class can be very intimidating at first, but the class is very rewarding. Whole grade is only based on a couple of exams, which can be pretty difficult. You just have to study a lot for his exams.
