Covers a lot of material. Did OK in class, but there were others that were quite lost.
Funny prof. starts out class really slow and then piles it on in the end. hard to keep up with near the end of the semester
if you're taking statistics...TAKE PACKARD!
I had to take stats twice and I learned so much more from Him then i did my first professor i'd recommend anyone taking stats to take it from him
i took stats with novotny and failed ... with packard i have an a ... you should take packard if you take a stats class .. he's pretty easy
Very poor professor! Confusing class presentation
He's horrible would not suggest him to anyone.
He is one of the funniest professors I know, this class is extremely simple if you utilize all the tools Packard hands to you on a spoon. Take him for sure!
hes ok doesnt seem like he likes to teach.
Awesome professor. Hilarious. I was sure I would do awful but it turned out to be my easiest class of semester. Do his practice tests and then ask any questions you have when he reviews, and your golden. Come to class and do homework too. Duh.
Yes, he is a little silly- but he knows it and even says so the first day. Come to class, do the homework (he assigns minimal problems and shows you how to do them!), use the tools on his web-site, ask questions and you will NOT fail! Take-home tests & 2nd chances on HW grades! I am mathematically-challenged, but was able to get an A in the class!!
Dr. Packard is an engergetic, intelligent and enthusiastic professor. His presentation of coursework may seem a little unorthadox, because it is...he teaches with passion, vigor & reality based vibe that is missing in numerous classrooms. I highly recommend this class & professor as a life learning experience on how to engage yourself into life.
Good teacher, extremely fast teacher, so if not a quick learner I would not recommend him!
yo, do not take this teacher, he is the worst professor in history. late everyday, he doesnt listen to you at all, his teaching method is lame, and he is so not hot. he pulls up his pants way to much. we pay his salary and he is not available unless you ask, very poor teacher, i hate him, he thinks class is a joke to him
He is AWESOME PACKARD IS THE BEST IN THE entire universe. you have to take his class
He was difficult....
Fast pace, hard to keep up with. Not helpful. When asked for incomplete, agreed then failed me with no reason or response to inquiry.
Moved through the material very fast and did not describe anything in good detail. Bad class to take if you are not very good in math.
One of my favorite Professors so far, he's very quirky and funny and really shows his passion for math. He teaches mainly through examples and practicing, which I like a lot. Do the homework and definitely take the practice test before the regular test and it'll be a breeze!
He is not a good teacher he professes and doesn't help much either.
Don't take his lower level classes. He doesn't care to teach them and it shows. He was not helpful at all and it was really hard to understand what he was talking about during class.
He means well, but he is so bad at teaching! He gets off topic very easily and moves way to fast. In cases like this, I usually teach myself from a textbook, but he wrote his own book! Just as confusing! He made statistics way harder than it needs to be.
Not a good teacher. I'm not great at math but I understood everything a lot more before he explained it. He is a very smart guy but overall, cannot dumb down his doctorate in math to a lower level class like 110. Late every day, would confuse himself and have to re-do problems. Keeps attendance in his head- may fail athletes.
Although he is very smart, he doesn't teach the material as much as rambles and hopes you catch it. He only shows how to do methods by hand and does not accept work more accurately done by calculator. Not good for anyone who can't teach themselves with few notes
He is almost too smart to be teaching this class. He skips over material he deems as "common sense"
Homework is on paper based on a scale of 10. 22/24 on a homework assignment is a 0. He doesn't follow the text book.
Not a fan. Worst professor I have ever had and I woukd reccomend not taking calc with him.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS TRY TO FIND A DIFFERENT TEACHER DOESN'T EXPLAIN MUCH OF ANYTHING
I had been taking all my math classes online through Pearson's Math Lab program but decided to take the advice of many who said I'd better take stats 200 in-seat. So I chose Packard, and oh boy BIG MISTAKE. I dropped after the second class to re-enroll online because Packard speaks too fast, tells a lot of long stories, and is hard to follow.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I switched from Pre-Calc into Stat 200 with Packard and I should have read the reviews on here. He is the worst professor. I'm a freshman in Stat 200 so I am actually quite decent at math. You will end up having to teach yourself so I'd recommend not taking this. The textbook you will need if you will be teaching yourself.
I would not recommed this class to my worst enemy. There's a lot of homework and the tests are very hard. I took precalc in high school and got a B-and now I have an F in this class. He is a very smart person but that has no correlation to you learning anything. If you get placed in this class, drop it ASAP and get out before your GPA suffers.
FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!! He doesn't really explain anything. I only went to class to turn stuff in other than that, I had to go to the TLC center everyday just to get my homework done. He's really picky too!!
He is a nice person but he dosen't explain step by step on how to figure out a problem. He assumes you know what he's talking about and moves on to the next problem. But he always offers his help after class, so that's a plus! :)
Worst prof I've ever had.
Hands down the worst teacher I've ever had... Sadly he didn't fix my learning style. Moves at an extremely fast pace. When asked to slow down he says he will but, will just continue to move quickly. Also tries to "get ahead" leaving most behind. Not only are there assignments online but in the book as well. Miss 10 questions and you fail.
Worst professor ever and he's tenured so he doesn't car. Talks like an awkward guy trying to pick up a woman, fast as hell and mumbles a lot. He knows the material but doesn't convey it well at all, relying on students to draw conclusions from his ramblings saying "If this is this then this is this, right? Right." Don't take this class.
I thought he was very clear with Stats. He always linked the newer harder equation with the first easy one so it made sense. He was helpful and if I got something wrong on homework he lets you redo it and gives you full credit even if it is your second or third time doing that problem. I would definitely recommend him for anyone scared of stats.
His teaching techniques were not very successful.
This professor is a very nice person, but shouldn't necessarily be a professor. He is brilliant and knows what he is doing however he doesn't explain it well or in a clear and concise manor. If you struggle to learn math in a way that doesn't show logical steps do not take this professor.
He mainly rambled about politics and mountain climbing. His lectures were confusing. I am great at math and have never failed or even gotten a B in a math class before but I couldn't stay focused because he was all over the place. He told us to buy the book and then never used it. He taught what he thought was right.
Math is typically my strong suit... I used to find joy in math, but this class was god awful. Packard is a nice man and does not seem to have bad intentions, however, I would not recommend him as a teacher. He likes to move quickly and wander off topic. I wouldn't go so far to blame him for my lack of an A but the lack of enjoyment made it tough.
I worked my butt off in this class, I redid all my homework if I was given a bad grade, I showed up to every class, and I always asked questions. But because of the tests ( he does not help you prepare for) I received a "C" in the class. I know a "C" is passing but I have always been amazing in Math receiving A's in all my other classes. No help.
Packard is very smart. He knows a lot about statistics. The biggest problem I had was he skips the "easy" steps when explaining the new materials. So when I left class and tried to do the homework at home I would get confused as to where some numbers were coming from. If you want a professor to hold your hand through this class don't take him.
This guy is super smart. And I think most of the time he expects the same smartness from you. I don't really know if he ever takes a breath in class because he goes so fast through the problems so take notes. The only way I managed to wade through this class is the online solutions and practice tests. Also, he never uses the book so don't buy it.
His homework was not clear and I thought I was doing very well. I've taken this class before just needed a brush up and knew the material but he was awful at teaching it. He messed up the points for the final test. I poured in a good 42 hours to homework and studying at the end of the semester and I got a D.
He gives online homework and makes up his own homework that you have to turn in. I spent more time on his homework than I have for any other class. His hand writing is hard to read and is very unorganized while solving problems on the board. He flies through the material and doesn't seem to care if his students understand it.
worst prof, very unclear when grading papers, lectures are a mess he is unorganized and when he does problems on the board he will confuse you more than teach you. There is quite a bit of homework assigned and when he grades it his grading is unclear. Would definitely find another professor.
The worst teach I have ever had. He has tenure so they won't fire him. He cost me, and many other that i know of their scholarship. Don't take him. He's a self-righteous ass.
Dr. Packard teaches you to do math using methods not found in any textbook but that he made up himself. Because of this, 80% of what he teaches only makes sense to him. He refuses to teach out of the textbook because in his words "this is much easier in my brain." Have fun trying to teach yourself a semester worth of material if you take his class.
Honestly he's just a mediocre teacher. What he lacks in organization, he makes up for with enthusiasm. If you do all the extra credit, then this class is a breeze.
Worst teacher I have ever taken. He was consistently late to class everyday, and he would lecture so quickly you could never keep up. Most points are from the tests. He made us take half of the course exams (3/6) within the last 3 weeks of class because we fell so far behind. He is also very unwilling to help when you need it. DONT TAKE!!
Avoid this class at all costs!! Most students fail in his class because he doesn't care about his students at all!!
Erik Packard is probably the worst professor I have ever had. Being that I was in college algebra and not a higher level of math, he thought he was too smart to be teaching such a "low" level of math. He beats around the bush if you ask a questiton and doesn't help review for tests. Even skips material because "it's easy and we should know it."
Do not take his class. He is too smart to teach anyone. He moves through problems in lecture so fast that you will gain little to nothing from it.
If you're good with math and have the time for the homework he's a good professor. He is fast paced and really good at math. This means that he isn't the best at helping students who struggle.
This guy was by far the worst teacher I've ever had. He gets so far off topic and then tries to relate it back to the material, losing everyone in the process. His homework is endless and even the TLC has trouble completing some of the problems. He lacks any sort of compassion for his students, skips around material and RAMBLES. Don't take him!
If you struggle with math, do not take him. If you are a natural and have time for the homework then you should be fine.
Very self centered... does not teach normal stats, he literally has a textbook he wrote that is not helpful if you need to know real stats.
He is very self absorbed and an extremely tough grader. He does not teach stats normally because he wrote his on textbook which makes him super bias.
Very bead teacher. You dont learn in class and he goes through practice problems very fast. Its a learn it by yourself class
If you taking a math course expecting to actually be taught something, you're in for an unpleasant surprise. His lectures are impossible to follow as he blazes through his work and never stops to explain himself. He's unhelpful when answering questions, and tends to not care if you are confused. Expect to spend a ton of time teaching yourself.
NO... JUST NO. DO NOT TAKE HIM. LOTS of homework. LOTS of test. He is ALL over the place I'm not sure if he knows what he's talking about half the time. Never responds to emails- his office hours are strictly set and when you go to ask him for help to explain things he gets frustrated - He feels like you should already know everything. STAY AWAY
The worst professor I have ever had. He goes through material way too quickly and does not clearly answer questions. The way he grades is very confusing and hard to follow. The only good thing was that he posted what grade you needed on the final to pass the class.
Absolutely awful professor. He speeds through his lectures and you cant follow. To top it off he tries to give the wrong answer during a lecture but nobody catches it cause hes going way too fast. Dropping his class was the best decision Ive ever made.
Not the best with teaching style but wants you to succeed
Horrible!!! Do not take it. Lectures do not teach you anything and you are lost once the exam comes. Gives double the homework and is hard.
This class can be hard, but if you go, participate, and ask questions you will succeed. He will always help if you get stuck. He gives opportunities to everyone to improve your grade! Lots of homework but they are very similar to tests.
He is very lenient with grading and always allows retakes/point redemption if you put in some work! Very accessible in and out of class. Some people talk badly about him, but if you just show up and try (even just a little) you'll be just fine! He's a really nice guy and very intelligent if you give the class (and him) a chance!
DO NOT take his classes as others have said. He goes extremely fast cant keep up with taking notes or following his work on the board. he retaliated, when I emailed asking him to slow down and for help,by dropping me from the course which I was able to get back in and says and I quote "its unfortunate that it takes more help for students to get it"
Be prepared to do alot of homework and to get no help from his lectures. If you already have an understanding on stats then you may be able to pass. This is not an introdutory class.
His lectures were really confusing and I had a hard time following along. He often goes on tangents not related to the subject of the class. He does not know how to use the graphing calculator and wont teach you how to. Asking questions didnt help.
Packard is an incredibly intelligent professor and he understands statistics very well but he has an inability to connect and understand where his students have short comings in understanding subjects. He also talks a mile a minute so if you mentally check out even for a second you'll be lost. If you're a stat major take his class, if not don't go.
I believe he knows what he is doing but there is a huge disconnect with how he teaches. every-time I went to go get help in his class, he would go on rambles for 45 minutes about his life or sports. Rambles in his lectures. I am already bad at math as it is, so I need a structured teacher that provides actual help.
The worst professor I have ever had. He rants every class, none of his lectures made sense. He was never able to help me and I had to teach the whole class to myself. I would never take his class again.
Literally would give us homework that with so many things that were not taught. This dude is an absolutely terrible teacher. He also is horribly chaotic in how you turn in homework, worst teacher I have ever had.
Not a great professor. I had to teach most of the class to myself because the lectures served little to no purpose. I showed up for every lecture and struggled to keep up. I was 11 points from an A in this class and its only because I taught myself the material. He was often disorganized and even handed back homework that had been crumpled up. 0/10
Professor Packard is nice and extremely smart. However, that is where the positives end. He is random and eccentric. My class only meets 2 hours per week, and he blazes through it every time with little explanation of steps. I struggle with math, and many things were not taught in class. I tried to teach myself outside of class but it didn't click
While Packard is a smart person, he doesn't do a great job sharing that knowledge. I essentially had to teach myself the course. His tests and homework were equally confusing and he would never give feedback on how to make corrections. He would often stray off topic during course and even had students ask him to focus on the class material.
He's pretty good, but the class can be pretty tough. Go to office hours!! He is really funny and makes lecture fun, but his method of teaching isn't for everyone. It worked really well for me but not the kid who sat behind me. RIP his GPA
Lectures are hard to follow, he begins semi explaining the topic but will wonder off talking about basketball. He does not explain the steps to solving a problem and will just write down the answer. If you are a visual learner who needs to see the problem broken down find a different professor. Exams are hard.
Smart professor who doesnt teach exceptionally well. You must go to every class and keep up with homework to do well. The homework is hard to follow and the solutions are even harder to follow. He has tiny bad handwriting and I suggest you sit close to the board.
These ratings scared me when I first started the class but I turned out fine. As long as you take the time to try and understand the homework and actually do it you will be okay. He gives at least 10 points of extra credit per test and gives students the chance to do homework and test corrections. He is always welcome to help you outside of class.
If you show up to his class and do the work you will be successful. Take advantage of his re-do's. A great teacher who wants you to do great in his class. Don't get behind and this class will be one of your favorites.
He is very knowlegable in the material and he knows his stuff, but there is a clear disconnect when it come to teaching. He talks for the entire class, sometimes even going over. Never really explained how any of the math worked. Allows endless redos and you can turn in homework whenever but there is double homework that is hard to follow.
easily the WORST professor I've ever had. HE will talk about anything and everything other than the course materials. He is terrible at explaining concepts and when someone asks a question it will never actually get answered. If you actually want to learn and pass a class, don't use him as your professor.
Dr. Packard was easily my favorite professor my first semester at CMU. He somehow makes stats fun, which is difficult. All you have to do in his class is take notes (he does the homeworks in class) and show up. He gives a free letter grade for every test and you can re-do tests and homeworks. Impossible to fail. Stats is hard, not his fault.
If you don't have to take this class with this professor, don't. He does not teach in class, the only way I was able to pass was doing tutoring 2 times a week and having them teach me. This class was very difficult and confusing and if you didn't understand the math right away good luck learning it. I would not recommend.
If you don't have to take this class with this professor, don't. He does not teach in class, the only way I was able to pass was doing tutoring 2 times a week and having them teach me. This class was very difficult and confusing. If you didn't understand the math right away, then good luck. I would not recommend.
He is a good teacher if you use the resources he gives you. His class is easy to get an A in if you show up and ask for help. He makes extra credit easy to get, but defiantly is NOT good at lecturing. His tests are almost the same as the few homework problems he gives for each lecture
He just has no idea how to teach. Teaches everything like it's review. He talks in circles, he tries to avoid teaching straight from the book and ends up teaching nothing. A unit circle concept that basically amounted to 2+1=1+2 took 2 days to get because he just makes no sense. Our class went from full to 1/3rd of its size and half of them failed
Doesn't try to teach in any way but by examples on the board that don't make sense to anyone but him. Even the tutors couldn't help because the way he wanted us to do stats was completely different than every other teacher. Thought the textbook was wrong and didn't teach us how to do anything on the calculator. Absolutely useless class.
Very bad, give you a lot of work but will never explain how to do it, office hours are not helpful he doesn't help at all, he talks for a longgggg time and goes off on tangents that don't matter, the whole class is lost, save your money and get a good professor
Packard knows statistics and is passionate about it, but in no way does he know how to teach it. He talks a lot and rambles on about basketball. He has some kind of vendetta against calculators and will not give you points if you don't solve problems his way. The Organic Chemistry Tutor was the only thing that helped me pass this class.
If you are good at math and can pick up concepts after having them explained once and are willing to sit through his long and tangent filled lectures, you will do fine. Everyone else I would recommend taking someone else. He does give lots of points opportunities which is the one advantage. Test corrections and add ons available.
Packard is passionate about stats, but struggles to teach it effectively. While his tests are easy, his lectures are often confusing. Attending office hours and using Unstuck study for study prep are key to surviving this class.
Statistics is not a difficult class but Packard manages to make it one. He lectures at the board for the entire 2 hour class and goes on random tangents unrelated to the course material. We worked almost no problems in class and everything I learned, I learned on my own. If you're good at math don't be worried, otherwise take a different prof.
Not a good teaching style for people who like in depth explanations. Personally I'm a 4.0 student and had trouble understanding his teaching.
Here's your full Packard rundown: he's very proud of his PHD from Texas tech, but he can't teach. Period. Refuses to use D2L, and explains things in a way that I've never seen before. I took AP calc 2 (the course I'm rating) in high school (and passed!) and I'm still spending hours doing his homework. To be fair, there's lots of extra credit.
Don't take his class. Just don't do it. It isn't worth it.
Mr.Packard himself is a very smart person, although his teaching is very difficult to understand. He gets sidetracked very eassily and is hard to follow. Does not use calculator. His makes his own tables making it impossible for tutors to help.
He knows what he's doing, but can't teach. I could go on but just save yourself now and don't take him.
He goes off on so many tangents about his cats or sports, making it confusing to follow along. His examples are confusing, he does most of the stuff in his head instead of showing step by step. If you learn something a different way, not his way, you get an F. If you are not a fast learner and are not good at math don't take his class.
His grading methods are very loose allowing you to turn in late work. This would be great if he were capable of teaching his course. His explanations are always "just trust me" or "you dont want to get into it" Lectures are all over the place with tangents about his glory days at Texas Tech. Exams are 80% of your grade. Just dont take his course.
Professor Packard's class doesn't use calculators to solve, its mainly formula based. I'm not too great at math but he provides a lot of extra credit opportunities, corrections on exams, and add on points to exams. Yes, this class was challenging but he's a nice guy who will help you over email and in person.
Bad Lecturer past student's distribution
I was scared when I first saw Packard's ratings. But turns out he is just fine. Just show up to class, do the homework, ask questions during his office hours, and you will do just fine. He offers tons of extra credit as well.
I have always been good at math until it came to this course with this professor. I completed every homework assignment to 100%, went to the tutoring center multiple times a week, and studied tremendously. All of this still lead to me getting barely a D on the first exam. I recommend taking STATS with any other professor available.
I have seen a lot of mixed reviews on professor Packard, so I'd like to be as earnest as possible: it's fine. Lectures can be tangential and he does move fast, but the math isn't too complicated. He provides an equation sheet (can use on tests)+ hw isn't due until the end of the semester (can correct it). Your experience w/ this prof is up to you.
Packard is a scattered lecturer. He does have a unique grading system based on total points. You don't really know how you're doing til the end of the semester, which is annoying. But if you do the homework, do your best on the tests, and take advantage of the add-ons, you will pass. You may even get a A without taking the final! Trust the process!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Yes there is extra credit but he does not explain the math and makes stats more complicated than it needs to be often uses reasoning like "i've done this a hundred times" then writes an answer with zero explanation of how he got it. Goes on long unrelated tangents all the time. Save your money and get a better professor.
Erik Packard is the worst professor I have EVER had. He goes on long tangents almost every class, and does almost no actual lecturing. All of his lectures come off of long PDF documents that have no actual practice problems. There is extensive homework given, with online and paper assignments not lining up. Take someone else if you can.
