amazing
I really enjoyed his class. He is very helpful, he explains things more clearly. His class is not boring.
i absolutely love his class. not only does he make english more interesting, he helps you think more critically about the stories.
Erik really helped me improve my writing. If you are willing to work and write, you will do very well and it pays off. There is about 4-5 one to two page papers, two 3-5 page ones, and 1 6-8 page research paper. No tests or quizzes. Erik is always available for help in ofice hours. He is definitely my favorite teacher! TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
I loved this class! Never have liked english until i took this class. Erik is a very interesting and funny guy. I ended up with an A in his class. Just make sure you go to class and arrive on time. Also complete all the essays they are mainly what your grade is based on. Ask for help he's more than willing to offer it. Take him Now!
Great early American lit professor. Knows what he's talking about and has great discussions. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have chosen my major's concentration- which is 19th century American literature. Enjoyed his style of teaching so much I went on to take 20th century American literature with him.
I commented already and he got a sad face but it should be a happy face. Made a mistake. I'm the 19th century American lit major.
Erik is my favorite teacher of ALL TIME. His classes aren't easy, but why would you want an easy class? They're boring, and you don't learn that way. If you're prepared to come to class (which you should anyway), work hard, and learn a lot then his classes are perfect for you. He's absolutely amazing.
He's my absolute favorite teacher at OCC. Challenges you to analyize literature and helps you think things through when you're stuck. He's brilliant but he never forces his own interpretations on you, and instead, simply suggests as if he's not better than all of us. Which he totally is. I recommend this class to anyone and everyone.
He's a great teacher and he goes above and beyond to make you understand. He loses his point sometimes, but nothing major. Make sure you attend class and DO NOT procrastinate on the essay assignments, but take him....
Erik is a very good/unique teacher. I took his class for the first time and I love it. He teaches great. His essays are a bit challenging but it's certainly possible. Funny and energetic.
his essays are tough! class is overall hard and very time consuming. Rango is a great funny guy though!
TOUGH! TOUGH! TOUGH! A few pop quizzes a the beginning so do your reading!! TOUGH essays....your grade will drop if you don't show up or if you're late. Bring book to class. Do essays on time (long and hard) I would not take him for english 100!
GREA><I took his class and i like him alot bcuz he is like one of us. He is young energetic, and loves his little boy. He tries his best to explain the essays and always wears Converse shoes. Watch out for the lil 10 point quizzes on the book reading, it may help or hurt you. It should help you more.OVERALL he is wonderful i got an A+ in his class.
I didn't think he did a good job in preparing his students for the assignments he would give. He didn't teach any structure or styles of writing. I feel that in our class he was trying to teach at a higher level than he was supposed to. Not only did I feel this way but a lot of students that remained in the class throughout the summer.
Dr. Rangno comes from UCI and grades like he is still at UCI, the only problem is that he is at OCC. Overall he was a great guy, went WAY out of his way to help me in every question that I had but unfortunately that was never enough to please him on my papers. This was the first time that I received below an A in an OCC English class (my major).
Erik is the best teacher at OCC, he challeneges you yet is always available to answer your every question. He is a genius---ask him about Moby **** and you will see what I mean. I recommend him to everyone looking to learn!
Hes a really cool teacher, great guy always cracking jokes but i think his level of teaching is too high for and english 100 class. i think he asks to much of the class and his topics are very hard..it was so fusterating it try to understand his class. i wouldnt take him again for any class.
Really great teacher! He definitely runs his lit class at a high level for a community college, but I personally enjoyed that. Really fun dude, always makes jokes and keeps it interesting. Highly recommended.
Erik is the perfect teacher. He's entertaining which helps the time go by, and knows his material. His classes are hard and ask a lot of you, however if you can make your arguments clear and back them up, then you'll pass. Everyone complains that he's too hard for a Com. College, whatever, he's only preparing you for the world to come. TAKE HIM
Rangno is honestly one of the most intelligent people I've ever been exposed to. His class is challenging and requires a great deal of insight, even for a self-proclaimed English fan. Class is discussion based, in the socratic form. Rangno forces students to reach their potential. Highly recommended for english majors, not for the lazy or stupid
I absolutely adore this professor...He's extremely intelligent and has a great sense of humor. He helps you appreciate and understand the literature you read and helps broaden your perspective. If you love English as much as I do, the given prompts for essays are great and do-able if you put in as much effort as he does =)
Really great prof.his instructions for essays are really clear he lets you know exactly what he's looking for. it seems like he expects a lot but go to see him for questions hes really helpful!he is really nice and funny too!would def recommend his class if you are willing to work a bit!
Intelligent. Fun. Will make you appreciate the literary arts.
Very funny. Mainly essays, not many tests. Lots of class discussions, which really help you understand the material. He is always willing to help you on essays. I took him for both 100 and 102. I highly recommend him for either class.
Good teacher, lots of discussions and reading but good class for actually learning something and improving skills.
He's a lot like the sidekick in national treasure. Regardless, he's brilliant, entertaining, and the class isn't what you would expect--while reading and participation is required, it often feels more like a debate forum than a lecture.
He is a really good teacher and will help you improve your writting skills. However, his class is very difficult and his prompts for essays made me more confussed. Only take him if you are willing to work ALOT.
I agree with everyone who says he teaches like he's at UCI. Really tough to understand what he wants on his essays, and when you ask for clarity he just confuses you more. Great guy, but the class was tough when it came to essays. The talk was fun and he'll never say you're wrong about something. I wouldn't recommend him for non-English majors.
If you want to learn. Take take Erik. The essay prompts are complicated, but very clear on what he's looking for. He's a great teacher and cares about his students. Its not an easy class, but very rewarding and makes you look at literature in a whole new way.
I have to disagree with some people. I enjoy the challenge of the class, but I think he lacks structure and guidance. He should make his expectations better known. I also think he dominates the discussions too much and should allow the students to foster their own original ideas. I do appreciate his challenging materials and essay prompts.
basically one person called his class easy one time so now we all have to pay for it. he says its reasonable as compared to 4 yr colleges but it isnt at all. he seems to really like listening to himself talk and all he does is summarize what the students say but with big words. class is way too hard, grading is too hard, books suck. avoid.
way too hard of a class. way too boring in content. he grades like a tyrant and thinks throwing large words at us will make boring and confusing books make sense; sadly he's wrong. if he's challenging us to become better writers, he is failing. he is only proving that even community colleges have professors that make things too hard for no reason.
His is class is to tough. Very tough on grades. He teaches as if we are all going to be English professors.I do not recommend him if you are not majoring in English.
I took 3 of Erik's classes at OCC. I absolutely love his teaching style and his enthusiasm. He is passionate about the subject matter and he makes the class fun. He has a wonderful sense of humor and he genuinely cares about his students' ability to grasp the information. He's tough, but I see that as a positive thing. Awesome!!!
Eric is a great teacher who expects a lot out of his students. which makes him hard. you must do your work and participate in class to succeed.
I honestly loved this class, and I hate English. Basically it was 4 essays and that's it, all essays except for the fourth are argument based in a book that he assigns you. Some books were dumb but he always tells you EXACTLY what he wants. Is pretty funny too. All around great experience.
Erik is very intelligent, yet his ego my be the size of his brain. He does not listen to anything regarding grades, and his help is not thorough and ambiguous. He seems to regard himself and his opinion more than sliced bread. I DID enjoy the reading, and the in depth discussions, but AVOID his class unless you want to dedicate 3/4of your study time.
He gives you exact directions with handouts that go exactly with what you need to get an A. He is willing to put in extra time to help you. He makes class so much fun, I am always laughing. Definitely makes the effort to be fair and he explains literature really well. He truly helps everyone understand above and beyond. He is understanding.
The reviews on here scared me, but i stuck with it and found he is an AWESOME professor. He's down to earth and VERY fair and knows the material too. You do have to work but he will assist you 100% of the way and answers every question you have via email or in class. If you're willing to work he will meet you half way. Take him & work, you'll do ok
class is based on a so-called "discussion" and response papers (THE essays). Prompts are hard to comprehend. He is definately willing to help, but honestly, he's not good at it. If you wanna challenge yourself, go for it (but I wouldn't recommend him personally)
The best teacher I have ever had! His classes are difficult and require actual work, but if you go consistently then you shouldn't have too much trouble. He is willing to help you with anything and give you advice when you need it. So be respectful and do the work! I would recommend him without reserve.
Greatest teacher I've had so far. Really made my summer classes fun.
He knows what he is saying
great professor, kinda like donald sutherland's character in animal house. really cool laid back, and before you know it you actually learn something about the stories you read.
Knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. Very chill in person, genuine, makes the class fun, interesting, gets you involved. Fair grader, understanding, helpful. Show up to class, read the hw, turn in papers on time, & you're g2g. Definitely recommend this professor, especially for Eng 100.
Erik is one of the best professors I've ever had because of how entertaining his classes are. I've never been bored (and we're talking about a four hour class). I completely recommend him. He's a bit of a hard grader, but you'll be fine if you do the work and he discusses how you can improve if you meet with him during office hours.
My first day of class I was a little worried, He said he grades kind of hard and is very serious when it come to plagiarism. But if you read the assignments, turn you work in on time and actually try, you will be fine. I was out of school for over 10 years and i got a B, I would have an A but I slacked off at end. Great Teacher, Highly recommended
You can only get out of this class what you put in to it. The assignments are fairly difficult but not impossible. Erik is really laid back as long as you turn in all of your assignments and come to class regularly. If you put in an effort and maybe some face time during office hours you'll for sure get an A or B and also become a better writer.
Loves english and tends to rub off on you. His subjects tend to be subjects he enjoys and thats usually not a universal subject anyone can just jump into. Papers are hard and you won't know exactly what he means until he clarifies the date before it was due. All around good teacher just expect to be challenged.
Very hip and entertaining.Subject matter very obscure taken from art. film and reading. In class testing easy, essay grading hard. You better be a very creative writer to match very creative and obscure material. Nice Guy,very witty, did not care for the course material. Mixed emotions.
Very enthusiastic and entertaining. Time just flies in his classes. Demands hard work, yes, but helps you through it. Do the work he wants and there's no reason you won't get an A.
Challenging, but extremely worth it. Awesome professor.
Sat down for my first day of class and I already could tell i wasnt gonna last long. I just felt very uncomfortable. It felt like a group therapy session instead of an english class. He had us all sit around in a kumbaya-esque circle and talk about something we blahblah i dont even remember. Very good for people who want to talk about deep feelings.
Fun in class discussions (random tangents), but sucks at teaching the actual material
Excellent, concise, and fun teacher. Somehow manages to keep even 4 hour long classes interesting. He actually TEACHES you how to write rather than just expecting it to happen. Negatives would be his deep abstract subject matter may be difficult for some. He is a "big word user" so may not be best professor for students coming straight from ESL.
He's a good teacher but he grades WAY TO HARD!! I don't recommend this teacher at all!
Pretty hard class. You read constantly, and write a paper pretty much every single week. He is a tough grader but it is worth taking this class. It helped me get ready for the grading system at my 4 year. Don't take him unless you are required to or love to talk in class everyday about what you read.
This class was stressful and challenging but I would not change a thing about it. He made the class very exciting and interesting. The readings and films were always really good and I always enjoyed coming to class. He is witty and very intelligent and is very open minded to his students thoughts and opinions. I recommend taking his class!
Erik is by far the best English teacher i have ever had.(took 3 semesters) However, dont expect him to baby you and teach you the "tricks" of good writing. His philosophy is simple: good writing follows good thinking. He will teach you how to think If you have the capacity, This class will make you love literature
Without a doubt the greatest english teacher I have had. Delivers a very challenging class, but is so clear about what he wants! He's very funny, and his classes are filled with great discussions.
great class, he is a tough grader but he is only honest with your writing.sometimes the class can get boring, if youre not paying attention most of the time what he's talking about is helpful for the papers you write. watch out for synechdoche NY.
By far the hardest class ive ever taken, difficult grader, & his assignments are overkill.
Hard grader but in the end I didn't get the grade I was supposed to get. He bumped up my grade so don't get too discouraged! HORRIBLE on clarifying what he wants though! When I would ask questions about the prompt he answered with another question. Texts were SUPER over everyone's head but it seemed interesting once we got it-which took time!!
Great professor - dedicated to his subject and loves sharing his knowledge with students. Difficult work, but if you show interest, he proves flexible with grading. It would help to have impeccable writing skills prior to taking his course. Topics were sometimes difficult to comprehend, but overall would be thoroughly discussed in class.
Erik is an incredible teacher. The readings he assigns are hard, but they're all thought provoking and he spends enough time in class explaining everything you don't understand. Speak up, do the readings, spend time on the essays, and there's no reason you can't get an A.
Great teacher - assignments are hard and the stuff you have to read are hard, but he's funny and the classes are interesting most of the time. Pay attention because his lectures help you write your essays.
Personally, I did not like this class. He is very passionate about the subject, but the assignments we did were extremely dry and boring. Hard to understand. He is not very clear on explaining what he wants. Difficult grader. Was a 4 hour class and we stayed the whole time most classes. A LOT of work!
Professor Rangno is the best teacher at OCC. his goal is to help his students succeed and improve their writing skills. i am so thankful i got him as an English teacher. if u stay on task & follow instructions w assignments u are guaranteed to do well. you will miss out if you dnt get to take him as a teacher. he really is THEEE BESSSTTT!
Fun, engaging class, that offers you challenges instead of enforcing them on you. The assignments are really elaborate but are well thought out. Pulls the class together. Sign up for his classes.
He is a very good teacher. Even though his class seemed to be impossible to aced at first, don't worry. He will prepare you and explain every single thing, get out of his way to help you and make sure you go home and able to do the tasks. If you really want to learn, take him. Just make sure that you will work your ass off for that A.
his class is so hard! there are quizzes every time i came to class about the assigned readings which are SUPER hard to understand and yet there are quizzes right when you come in, his explanation to write essays does not match up to what HE actually want in the paper..worse english teacher at occ!
He is truly an amazing teacher! ALthough his class is hard and you will have to work to get an A, it IS possible. His topics are interesting & he makes class fun!! And most importantly he is always willing to help students improve their grade and understading of the subject. I'm SO glad i took his class
He is an awesome professor. Not easy but if you put in the work you can do well. I took it as a 8 week summer course so it was super intense but I enjoyed the class. We started packed with people waiting out the door to petition. Ended with maybe 16 of us left in the class. All in all I would definitely take another class with him.
Great teacher, very humorous, very helpful.
Erik is a GREAT teacher. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the topics you are writing about. For anyone to say that getting an A in his class is really hard or impossible is not exactly on point. I wrote all FOUR (yes, only four) essays the night or two nights before they were due and never got below a B+. TAKE THIS CALSS!!
Erik is a fantastic teacher. By far my favorite English teacher. If you try, and he sees that, he will make sure you do well. Erik is more than willing to talk to you one on one. He's definitely a philosopher at heart, and his lessons are mind-bending. Take his class if you are willing to learn and work hard.
Erik is a great english professor and has a great sense of humor, which makes the class fun. I never missed because I enjoyed going every day. Also it is very helpful to attend everyday to listen and participate in class discussion. Participation counts. A lot of reading. But such an interesting and engaging class. Take it!
He grades hard, but Very Helpful and Hilarious
Most engaging class I ever had. Come to every class, do all of the readings, participate in the roundtable discussions, and you'll get an A!!! Narrative & Law are not easy, but worth learning for everyone.
I would definitely suggest taking this English100 class with Rango! It's fun for an English class and he is really funny, helpful, and overall a really great teacher. Though his class is not easy, getting an A is not completely impossible.
This guy... one of the best teachers I've ever had. Completely revolutionized my writing skills because he makes you think! If your looking for an easy English class, don't take him. If you are looking for a class that stimulates argumentative writing and critical thinking seriously take him. He is also extremely funny and makes class really fun.
Keep up on the reading or else you will get lost in class. Hard grader on essays. Do not underestimate this class...
This was one of the most fun classes I have ever taken. Rangno is a tough grader and will challenge you. You will have to work for your grade, but it is definitely worth it, because you will learn something. He is hilarious, one of the most down to earth and easy to talk to professors I have encountered. Take his class and you will not regret it.
Great professor. Rangno is extremely helpful. He really cares about his students success. He is funny and entertaining during class, but also well organized. He teaches students not only to write, but to think.
I expected his class to be great, and it was. I expected his class to be difficult, and it REALLY was. Extremely humorous and helpful, I loved every minute of that class. Rangno is a professor you'll never forget.
I think a lot of people give him high marks because they believe he is actually intelligence. The truth is he is just babbling on incoherently. First day of class he gave us a handout with quotes he ripped off "Map–territory relation" on wiki. I think that says it all.
Mr.Rangno has made me a better writer and I thank him for that. Whatever you do though, DO NOT TAKE HIS FRIDAY 4 HOUR class. His class is so DRY it feels like you're stranded on in the scorching desert. dehydrated yearning for water. I felt like I was in hell trying to bear through the class.Felt like hell. I hated fridays cause of this class
Rangno is very intelligent, funny and makes class interesting. However, I wouldn't suggest this class to anyone that didnt want to be an english major. 4 essays and small reading quizzes. If you don't like putting in effort to your essays don't take Rangno. At least half of my class dropped after the first three essays.
MR Erik Rangno is an easy A teacher , i loved his class
He is helpful and goes over what he wants from you. I liked the class a lot.
DO NOT TAKE HIS FRIDAY CLASS... He grades hard. He gave us a couple of pop quizzes and if you fail he kicks you out. At the end about 2/3 of our class dropped out. He does have interesting things to say but then it just turns into babbling. Good guy, but take another class
WARNING: If you are not interested in applying yourself and "being a student" this class is not for you. Having said that, Rangno is an excellent teacher with extremely clear expectations and explicit instructions. If you cannot follow directions or read or write, you need to go elsewhere. If you like to read and write and learn, he's da BOMB.
Erik is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His English 100 class isn't for you if you want an easy A, and he makes that clear. That being said he does expect you to think for yourself and put effort in but he is patient, incredibly helpful, extremely clear about what he expects, and you will be a better writer at the end. Wish he taught 101.
Best teacher ever.
Erik Rangno is such an awesome teacher. He explains what he wants to see in your essays. All the papers link well to one another. He is always willing to help you during office hour, which I used all the time. He taught at UCI, and expects you to write at a college level, it is totally understandable and fair, great for transfers! Love this guy!!
He is an intelligent teacher. He expects students to be at the college level that they should be. If you want a good grade in his class you need to work hard for it. Make sure you read all required materials. Even though he gives you a maximum of 3 absences, DO NOT slack off because every class builds on the previous ones.
BEST TEACHER AT OCC. TAKE HIM. HE IS THE BEST!!!!!
Dr. Rangno is one of my top favorite professors. He has a fun, unique twist on his english 100. He gives very clear prompts and is very reasonable for what he asks for in a paper. Just follow directions, do the reading (small amount), and make sure you know what you're writing about. He has his students' backs and truly cares about them.
Professor Rangno is a very good teacher. He makes his lectures interesting and gets the class involved as well. Although the essays are hard, you can come to his office hours to have him help you with the essay.
Wow really do not know what to say about this guy. He's so helpful, so funny, and really is such a great teacher. The essays are tough but just go to his office hours and he'll lead you in the direction you need to be going. Some of the material he uses are kind of weird and he gets pretty philosophical, but just go with it. Best teacher at coast!!
Good Guy. Bad educator. He was my teacher for Fall 2012 and he admitted in class multiple times that he was well unprepared and unorganized for all of his eng 100 classes. His essays are very difficult and he grades you hard. He's funny, and very lenient if approached. I enjoy his life stories and jokes. He gives surprise book quizzes too.
Honestly I felt his class is a challenge but just with any other English teacher they provided challenges because they want you to think critically. To be honest at first I didn't like Rangno, but since I've been in the class it's actually interesting & he will provide clarity in something if necessary
One of the best professors I've ever had. He is helpful, clear about assignments, friendly, & an overall great professor. His essays MUST be taken seriously. DON'T PROCRASTINATE. He helped me build my confidence in writing essays. He is passionate about teaching & cares for his students. Friday class was challenging but 100% worth it.
I feel as though this is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Class is very challenging, the book was very hard to understand but professor explained it to a point where I somewhat understood it.
I am finishing with an A in the course and am registered to take him next semester. Rangno expects you to be at a college level and to think critically. The topics can be confusing, but just follow the prompt or talk to him. He is a great teacher if you like writing. I would not suggest him if English is a second language and struggle with grammar.
The best teacher by far at OCC. The class is an incredibly difficult but incredibly rewarding journey. I received an A at the end but it was not without a lot of time and effort. However, if you are not already an EXCELLENT writer, I suggest that you do not take this course.
This class is more of a Book club than a english class. You don't learn any writing skills/technique. All the class time is going over the Novel. 6 novels, 5 essay, 1 final. The teacher grades criticizes grammar, structure, ideas, format, quotes. when you take this class, its sink or swim. But doesn't show you how.
Great Friday class.. The material will keep you on your feet and each class flows into the next with an even balance of interaction and lecture. Erik lays It all out the first day as far as what he expects and what you can expect. Take full advantage of his office hours.. Helpful tips; show up every week, read Gaddis twice, and get involved.
by far the most amazing teacher, his class isn't the easiest class you'll take but it interesting and won't bore you. He is very serious about what he is teaching you, but also has a sense of humor and knows how to make the class fun. If you want to learn in an environment that is going to challenge you in a GOOD way this class is for you.
Very passionate teacher, and he'll make you laugh. By far the most challenging class i've taken, but in a good way. Material can be confusing at times, but he explains things clearly. If you go see him during office hours, he's extremely helpful! If you turn everything in and work hard you'll get an A. Would definitely take him again,
Will not take again
The class is not easy unless you pay attention in class and understand the reading. but the assignments are enjoyable because everything is argumentative
His choice of topics to write on makes students, writers or not, enjoy the art of composition. His prompts are rather abstract and the idea explored are even more so. I am still taking this class and am enjoying every moment of it. He grades rather easy in my opinion. He focuses on your understanding and structure rather than your grammar.
Professor Rangno is one of the most confusing professors I have had. The majority of topics were very philosophical and he always emphasized his perspective without thoroughly explaining or giving understandable summaries. If you do not write the paper using his "preferred method expect to fail. He also doesn't take missing class lightly. Beware.
So before this class I struggled to write long papers but with his lectures i learned to open up my mind & to expand my thoughts which helped me to write more. What I did to understand how to write the essays was to Write Notes when he explained the readings & to make sure I fully understood the prompt that he would give us.
I normally never write negative reviews for professors. But, Rangno has pulled it out of me. I have never met a more pretentious jerk. If you have a real love for literature, STAY AWAY. He encourages a literary circle jerk for every class, and requires that you read 8 books in 16 weeks. Not a way to appropriately appreciate literature. Plus: jerk.
Erik was one of my favorite professors at OCC. I always thought I was naturally great at essay writing, but he really made me work for my grade. Despite that, he was always totally open to help and encouraged students on the path they wanted to take their topics. And he's funny; always a plus.
Lets just start by saying this is not an easy A. Rangno teaches the honors english classes, so his regular english class is more difficult than normal. He is a funny and nice guy but his class sucks. His class is literally a book club, you just read and discuss. He is a hard grader and kind of unfair IMO. He doesnt teach you how to write at all
It was evident from the lectures that Rangno is very well read and passionate. He was relatable with our class compared to other professors whose lectures are often dominating. Kudos for sense of humor as well. His focus is on you understanding the literature which IMO is rewarding. Prompts can be challenging, but he will clarify if needed!
Lots of reading, tough grader. Definitely not an easy A. Can be very confusing as well..
Erik is clearly passionate about literature, and it shows. Class is engaging and hilarious, but incorporates challenging texts, and the two main essays that are assigned are hard. This is absolutely not a class to learn how to write - Erik expects you to know how to write well; this is more of a class based on critical thinking and responses. Read.
His class was very hard. I didn't do well at first because I didn't expect the class to go so quickly right off the bat. However, I went and talk to him about it as soon as I realized, and tried really hard afterwards. He really does care and was giving helpful advice. I walked out with a hardest A I've ever earned.
He's smart, teaches well, and encourages you to develop your own ideas about the works covered in class. He's also funny and nice. I put a 4 in difficulty because he does make you work for it (in a good way). Don't text during his class.
This professor is a very nice guy, but tends to go off topic a lot. One moment he's talking about the literature and the next he's talking about a butterfly he saw the day before.
There's a lot of group discussions. This class is actually a book club. He joins Ken class which makes you more intimidated. Please believe the bad reviews!!!! He's hilarious that's the plus thing
Erik's class was amazing. Listening to him speak is quite an experience. The class is very heavy on reading and critical thinking. His ENG100 and ENG101 were the most thought provoking classes I have ever been in. The material is complex but it is worth the effort. You honestly learn what it really means to think in his class. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Honestly, I really hate english but Mr. Rangno made me realize that it isn't so bad. Yes, he does requires specific guidelines from you but he doesnt make you feel pressured about the work at all. He's the kind of professor that makes you think outside the box and because of that writing essays becomes easy in his class. Take this class, just do it
Honestly, wasn't a fan at first. Tons of reading and the readings are very challenging because of the dictation used. However, I don't think I have ever learned so much and pulled so much from books that teach more than education but about life. The class makes you think... and think hard but it is overall incredibly rewarding. EffortSuccess
Oh my god he is suchhhh a sweetheart! Sweetest, kindest, and most hilarious prof I ever had! I wish he could teacher all my classes! Pay attention in class and try to participate. He's a gifted writer himself and isn't one of those "know-it-all" teachers, he deeply cares. He gets a little carried away but in the best way. He made me love english.
One of the best experiences I've had at OCC. Material is interesting and many of the class discussions is informed by the essays, not the other way around.
Absolutely the best professor that I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. He really cares about his students and values your opinions. There a few major writing assignments and that's basically where your grade comes from. He's super laid back in class and gives great feed back. 10/10 would recommend.
He is by far the best professor I've ever had. He is extremely funny, charismatic , and passionate about the books and assignments that are assigned. He is very helpful and provides office hours. Although his class is challenging, I admit that he has made me a stronger writer and he actually made me appreciate English (which is not my strong suit)
Best English professor I've had. He is super nice and hilarious. The lectures are kinda like a book club, and you do have to read, but he's able to get you engaged in the lecture and help you better understand it. The essays are easy if you don't do them the night before, and he does let you come in during office hours for help. Take this class.
I loved this professor! I took him 2 years ago and I'm back to write a review.. This might sound cliche but he reaaaallly makes you think OUTSIDE the box when writing your essays. Its not an easy class but you learn a lot and it's worth it in the long run! He made me a better and more confident writer
Definitely show up and be ready to discuss the reading materials. Participation points can save your grade if you're borderline! All his readings are intentionally selected and interesting to students. He does not overwhelm you with a plethora of papers to write, just a few. If I was an English major I would take him for all my classes.
Great professor that wants to see you succeed in your academic goals, but feels just as strongly, if not more so, about forcing you to think critically with relation to texts. This class will force you outside of your comfort zone and give you a lot of tools for future academic/life challenges. It is NOT an easy class, but it IS worth it.
The class if extremely hard but if you are an English Major and have a love for literature then definitely take this course. If you miss more than three classes it's very difficult to catch up so attendance is mandatory. This has been the hardest class I've taken so far but I did learn a lot about writing. Don't take it if you're lazy
Erik is really funny and a great professor. I unfortunately had to drop the class because I found the material to be too challenging. If you're thinking about taking the class, take it! Everyone experiences things differently, the material just wasn't for me.
Rangno will lead you through the difficult, haphazard, neurotic literature of the 20th century as Virgil led Dante through the layers of Hell. You'll be intimidated by what you see, there will be moments of fear and despair but the journey will nonetheless be colored by an overwhelming sense of awe & you will leave his class edified & learned.
Erik has been my favorite teacher yet. He is the funniest person I've met and he doesn't even try to be. He will make you want to work harder not only in school but in life too given all he's done with his and the credentials he's earned. He inspires and is very clear when it comes to writing essays. Just listen to him in class and don't text.
Absolutely loved him! He is soo funny and intelligent. One of the most profound teachers i've had the pleasure of learning from, for sure. The class itself though was extremely hard. He REALLY makes you dig DEEP into Shakespeare so if youre not into dense literature and analyzing it on an honors level, it may not be a good fit. Grading was fair!
I took Erik for two classes and was not disappointed. His classes are not easy but he is a great educator who is passionate about the material he teaches. He does not just give you books to read to torment you, he actually wants you to learn from the material and gain knowledge from his class. He is funny, witty and an all-around great human.
I'm currently taking Erik Rango, and I've never been so satisfied with a professor! He is such a well spoken & intuitive guy and never fails to make every class interesting. Ask questions because IT'S A MUST! He is always willing to listen to your feedback and help you out with whatever you are having difficulty with which I feel is most important!
His class was very hard for me. I'm no english major and do have a hard time writing, so his grading did not go well with me. He is a fun and nice guy, very passionate in what he teaches. But beware, very hard grader. If you have to take him, do it in the summer. He shortens his essay's pages.
This was one of the most difficult classes I ever took. Barely made it out with a C. He is a nice funny guy, but his way of teaching is awfully confusing and will leave you stuck on what to write. In the beginning of the class it felt more like a history class
I took Rangno's 101H class. He's a great lecturer and is funny as well. There is quite a bit of work both in and out of class, so be prepared for a lot of reading and writing. He doesn't like using Canvas much, so grades usually take a while to be submitted. Oh, and if you hate Shakespeare then maybe this isn't the class for you.
Ive taken 2 writing classes with Erik so far and he is wonderful! Very attentive to student concerns, gives clear feedback and really pushes you to write in ways youve never tried before.
His grading wasnt clear. My grade on canvas was %75 from 500 points. The final paper had 500 points as well. I put more efforts on final paper but he didnt post final papers grade on canvas. I just know I got a C which means my final paper could be very bad or very good! So no clue what SLO was. Like not much clue what they really wanted.
Love him. Didnt know how I felt at first, but he is really truly devoted to helping people not only learn, but think. His courses are heavy on lecture and reading so make sure you dont skip class too often. Pay attention in class and contribute to seminars. He is an amazing human being who genuinely seems to want to help people. +funny+cute
Ive taken Erik for 2 creative writing classes, so I cant vouch for his regular English classes, but I had a wonderful experience. Very attentive, down to earth, easily distracted but very passionate about subject. Interesting book choices, really pushed me to become a better writer. Read the books and be opiniated in discussions, youll pass.
Very boring class, it essentially like a big book club and very discussion based. However in all classes I seemed to never actually come out having learned anything? Doesn't structure essay prompts well, it was always to vague or asking for a million things at once. He's a nice guy though but as a teacher so-so
The absolute best english teacher I've ever had. Took him for 100 and 101. He chose the most interesting topics to read about, many philosophical. Less focused on the grammar side of things, and more on the ability to write convincing ideas and concepts/arguments. Loved every minute of it. Hated every minute of english before him.
hilarious and very enjoyable in class, but once you get outside with the whole bunch of ideas he throws to you in the homework, it is very tough. He is very philosophical, so you have to take a lot time to think before you write. interesting but very difficult.
Best english prof. absolutely hilarious, so passionate, extremely smart. Will do this best to make sure you understand. Not easy but if you try in his class youll succeed. He lets you write freely and wont knock points bc you didnt write what he wants to hear like most english professors will do.
Loved the subject English until I got to this class, tries to make students laugh but isnt funny at all. He isnt clear on any grading criteria and always posts grades on canvas when the semester is over already. Definitely would not take him again.
Professor Rangno is easily one of the most gifted, intelligent, hilarious professors alive. If you want to vastly expand your repertoire of knowledge, use the entirety of the one you have, and cultivate yourself, not just as an academic, but a person, TAKE HIS CLASS! If you're looking for an easy grade, he won't give you that. He cares too much.
Easily the best professor I have ever had. He is absolutely one of the most brilliant people you'll ever meet. He knows his stuff and his passion for the subject is unmatched. Overall, he's an amazing human being and I wish I could take a class of his every semester! Definitely put the time & effort in and you won't regret it.
He loves to make small- nerdy jokes here and there. His class is reading heavy, but overall you could pass the class with a C if you barely read and is just trying to take this class for credits. There are 4 books, and 3-4 essays and 4 seminars. Overall, his class was average and not sure if I would take his class again.
Many people love Erik but I strongly have to disagree with them. As a person, he is very genuine and nice but he's teaching style is not the best. This class was all about discussion and gave students no chance to grow and learn useful things to use when reading the texts Won't get a good grade on papers if he doesn't agree with your interpretation
This professor is very unclear with his grading criteria. He will write comments on your paper (e.g. "great sentence") but does not tell you what you did wrong. Then you will end up with 125 out of 150 points for your paper and have no idea why. Does he roll dice or use a pendulum to arrive at this grade? Also, no grading before the drop date.
Mr. Erik is really knowledgeable and passionate about the subject he teaches. His course is a lot of reading, less writing. He usually spends his whole class analyzing the texts you read.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!! never take him, you will fail or drop. waste of time.
I've had the pleasure of taking 2 of his classes & despite having now transferred to a diff. university, Erik is by far the best professor I have ever had. Those that give low ratings are mentally lazy and looking for an easy A. If you enjoy intellectual discussion, borderline philosophy, take him. I looked forward to his class every morning :)
Professor Rangno is a very good professor. The essay's in his class increase in difficulty throughout the semester, but if you attend class, he will walk you through the process of writing each. Expectations for his essays are clearly laid out and are communicated in every class before an essay is due. I would definitely take this class again.
The essays increase in length and toughness as you go through the class. I feel like he wasnt very direct with expectations and instruction. You ask him any questions and he can go off on a tangent for 20 minutes. Hes hilarious. This class wont be like other 100 classes. I wouldnt it take again he was too confusing.
Rangno? Where do I even get started? I took several of his classes (with Non-fiction 151 honors) and this guy is hands-down one of the best professors (even beyond the English dept). Really practical applications and thorough analyses of intimidating literature. His classes really stimulated my curiosity and led me to UC Berkeley for literature.
Erik is a really fun professor. He is always light-hearted and making jokes. He makes it fun and easy to understand difficult texts. The final was an 8-page paper on Hamlet, but he makes sure you are well prepared for it. He gives good feedback on your papers, so you should be able to get better grades as the semester continues. Take Erik Rangno!
Eriks class was a mind splitter on most days. The way we read and discussed the literature in class provided me an entirely different tool box of perspective to draw on. For the major papers you are given the freedom to choose your own topics. Rewrites are allowed and he provides clear feedback.
I took Erik for Creative writing this past semester and I can assure those who are thinking about taking him: DO IT! This class was amazing, even though we had to switch to remote teaching in the middle of the semester. Hes a wonderful instructor and gives amazing feedback. He helped me write clearer. Hands down one of the best ENG teachers @ OCC
If you want a professor who is willing to sit down with you and guide you in writing a successful paper, Professor Rangno is the way to go. While most of our papers had prompts, Erik really emphasized that we write our essays in our own fashion. It was an awesome class that I will never forget. For that, I am thankful. Hes funny and caring!
Professor Rangno makes the class very interesting with his commentary and personality. HOWEVER his grading is EXTREMELY BIZARRE. I go to office hours for every paper, and I have him review every paper I send in and I am still receiving a B minus - C grades on ONLY 2-3 page papers. Mind you, I am used to receiving As in UC level english courses..
Professor Rangno is amazing! His course is very difficult and you have to work for your grade but it's because he cares. He is incredibly understanding and willing to help you with your assignments. He won't give you the answer but he will help you get there. Amazing professor!
I took Professor Rangno for American Lit and creative writing. Rangno finds books that he feels passionate about, and it shows. They were all interesting and varied, introducing me to books and ideas I was unfamiliar with. In conversations, he'd listen to a student's point, clarify it, and build on it. Just be warned that he has a big vocabulary.
Rangno is the best professor I have ever had. He picks interesting books to read and has the class sit in a circle to discuss it, similar to a book club. If you do not like to read and write then this probably isnt the professor for you. This is his passion and it shows!
Prof. Rangno was a very chill professor. Easy to approach with questions and will clarify instructions. There was a LOT of work (and even more for the honors course) and I worked my butt off to receive an A, but I do feel like my writing has gotten stronger because of it. Def a solid choice but show up or you'll have no idea what's happening.
He's very funny and loves listening to student discussions. Only 4 essays and 5 discussions. Any student that has submitted work gets at minimum a C on their assignment, so its easy to pass with some effort. We read Greek plays, like Prometheus Bound, Oedipus the King, Antigone. Listen to the zooms! They help with essays, gives lots of ideas!
Rangno is more rigorous than your average English professor. Youll be engaging in and graded upon your ability to work with philosophy, law, and societal structures. If youre looking to challenge yourself on multiple platforms, I highly suggest you take him.
Rangno was a great Creative Writing professor. Read lots of cool short stories and poetry. The readings aren't tedious or difficult to read. Imagination and participating in works and other peers work. I liked it!
Prof Rangno is incredibly knowledgeable in the focuses of literature the class discusses, and hi class consists of literary discussions and students sharing their work. I never felt comfortable sharing my creative works in any setting before I had him, and that quickly changed. Be prepared for lots of work but very insightful feedback on all of it.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!! you will regret it! VERY HARD GRADER!! International students, don't take him or it will be your worst nightmare! He speaks in a way that try to make him appear sophisticated but in reality it just makes the lecture confusing. Lots of reading! Sometimes goes side tracked. WROST PROFESSOR EVER IN OCC.
Hands down the best English teacher I have ever had. He encourages excellent and thought-provoking conversation about the text. Strongly recommend if you are willing to participate at least a little each class.
His lectures and the entailing in-class discussions are very interesting and push you to rethink the readings. He is a tough grader, the average per assignment my semester was 60% according to canvas, so just make sure to put effort into the homework and essays and youll be fine.
Challenging in a cheap way, not in a way that makes you think. Be prepared to curve your interpretations to what he thinks is the only correct way to view certain texts. He is incredibly open ended and vague with his prompts but then gives you a poor grade when you don't meet his unmentioned standards. Worst teacher I've taken at OCC.
A really bad professor, he cannot grade assignments or respond to email at all. He is a very bias professor and will judge you from the start. He is very rude when it comes to discussions in class. I do not recommend this professor at all.
Honestly, he is a good professor and knowledgeable. But he is extremely vague with his prompts and isn't very clear with it. He will grade your essays very harshly, so essays that you think you've done fine, end up being one of your worse. The class average on the papers is usually around a C. If you are not an English major, please do not take him
Do not take this teacher. He never replies to emails, is very unhelpful and doesnt teach properly.
Personally would never take him again because of how bias he is with grading. I work hard on my papers and assignments but barely got by with a C in his class. Tough grader, all his assignments/essays average to a 70% and isn't clear with the prompts. No rubric to check that you have everything on essays. Worst professor I've taken during my 2 yrs.
Very good Professor
I took him while he was co-teaching with Ken Parker. Totally recommend. The class was pretty hard and he expects a lot but as long as you can write solid essays and participate you'll be fine.
The best Professor. Ive always been more math/science oriented & English classes terrified me. I took his short stories class to ease myself into other English classes Ill need, and I loved it! Discussions were fun, he gave great insight and also good feedback on assignments. Writing was very hard for me but he was so helpful & a very fair grader
Creative writing short story class. He's a VERY deep thinker. Picks his favorite short stories to read (not always my fav but ok). Spends A LOT of time talking about the stories, and his own creative writing. Learned a lot. All of my feedback was positive. Inspirational and encouraging. Would recommend for newbies. Fun class, overall.
My class is a combination of Professor Rangno and Parker. They are friendly and caring. They're always available to help when needed. The class was hard. As a second language learner, I put tremendous effort into the class. I'm glad I took the class since my English and critical thinking skill have definitely improved.
The best teachers are the most difficult because they teach you more about yourself than just the content you study & force you to challenge yourself. He is a hard grader, but he's preparing you for the real world & that means more to me than taking an easier teacher. He inspired me to be a writer and that's something I never knew I was capable of.
By far one of my favorite professors I've had! I really enjoyed his class and though it was a lot of reading and papers he is always there to help if you put in the effort. All in all, I really enjoyed his class :)
This professor throws out everything you have learned about writing essays. Very tough grader and does not really explain what he wants out of each essay but rather spends the entire class time rambling about the current book we are reading. Not very helpful at all and did not learn much the whole year. WASTE. OF. TIME.
Talks a lot, but it usually isn't wasted time. His conversations in class are valuable information you can use towards writing a more compelling essay when the assignment rolls around. Participation in conversation will help a lot, as well as re-reading the content you need to write about. Not an easy A, but effort is rewarded.
He works his lectures and workload around what will best support the writers in the class. Great at adapting and helping you. He's hilarious, and even though the course has many discussions, it's always unique and so great to listen to. Thought-provoking. Super fun assignments! Also, the textbook is helpful; it's not a bad read!
Professor does not give you syllabus or prompts for papers. Lots of rambling in class about what they think about the book, doesn't actually show you or teach you how to be a better writer. Take another class unless your an english major.
A really great guy, but this is the most difficult class I've had. I had straight A's until this class where I got my first C. He is funny and entertaining in his lectures (if you actually read) but the grading isn't clear and you probably won't learn how to improve your writing.
He is by no means someone to take for an easy A, but if you want to learn and improve your writing, take him. There was lots of reading and several essays, but he is understanding of personal issues and very helpful during the essay writing process. Tough but fair grader, and will reconsider grades if you are able to defend your writing. Fun dude.
Anyone who has a hard time/dislikes his classes is not meant to go to college. Not only are his classes fascinating, expansive, and bordering on life changing- he is always offering assistance outside of class hours- even for extracurricular projects. Since his class, I transferred to Berkeley and have yet to find a professor as elite.
Does not teach, more of a book club where they send you off to write papers with very little instruction. No prompts whatsoever. It feels like he does not want to give grades better than a C unless you dedicate the majority of your precious time to this class strictly. It is a shame because Rangno seems like a decent fella, just not professor wise
I took Rangno's Friday class that's combined with Parker's and mixed with honor students. Grades are primarily based on essays and reading quizzes and class is just him talking about Moby Dick for 5 hours. I always went to office hours for essay help but it was not helpful in the slightest. There is no clear rubric and his feedback is super vague.
This professor is honestly the best professor I've ever had for an English class. He is absolutely hilarious and makes the class fun. The class can get hard as he expects high level work from us and there are quite a few analysis papers, (5 to be exact), but his class is easy overall and he is great as a person.
4 essays in total, highly suggest you go to Rangno's office hours to receive feedback. Lectures are helpful in discussing and sharing perspectives for your papers. Weekly reading assigned along with a weekly quiz. Honors is the same as regular, but your last paper is 2 pages longer and you have to include an academic source for your final paper.
He's a really cool guy and is super approachable. Teaching style is lighthearted but informational, and he expects a lot. Essay prompts are vague. Had a solid B+ the entire semester, then family problems happened and couldn't finish up the final. Begged him to let me keep my B and he didn't- doesn't give pity grades lmao. Honestly, respect.
Rangno's class is challenging but rewarding. The essays and reading quizzes require a lot of work, but he provides helpful feedback. unstuck study was a game-changer for preparing. Overall, a tough but fair professor.
I can't even begin to describe how great professor Rangno is. English 100 wasn't just enjoyable, it was genuinely inspiring. This was probably the best college course I've taken. I normally dislike writing due to my dysgraphia, but this class encouraged me to accomplish things I thought I would never be capable of.
I miss his class so much! The books we read teach you so much about analytical writing, and I still use what I learned from his class today. I noticed a lot of English teachers get really wordy and confusing in their lectures, but Rangno's lectures are very clear and helpful. He also uses humor in a way that keeps lectures entertaining, but focused
I took this mfs class 15 yrs ago and I still think about the assigned readings and how they relate to my life
I took this guys class yrs and yrs ago but I still think about the assigned readings in relation to my life His assignments were never impossible but required honest work, not an automatic A
Mr. Rangno is very charismatic and helpful in class. The class books we read in this course a little confusing but overall not too bad. He is very easy on a papers and gives good feedback on assignments.
Rangno is awesome. If you care about diving deep into literature, or at least are willing to, Rangno makes it very enjoyable. He's not the easiest, but not the hardest. For A101H, it was very worth it. Strongly recommend
I'm not major in English. My suggestion is you should attend the lectures and have to contact him for feedbacks when doing essays. He is very funny and give the class a comfortable atmosphere. He offer materials. you will buy some books for essays or find its pdf on the internet. Overall, if you want a good grade, contact him when doing essays
He is Funny but and nice but is bad at giving a road map for the homework ahead of time in canvas. All in all a good professor though.
I LOVED taking Professor Rangno this summer. I wasn't necessarily a fan of the material we read, but his humor in his lectures compensated for it. For it being an 8-week hybrid class, it was pretty manageable.
I absolutely adore this professor. He is super funny and a fair grader. The material itself is kinda boring, but he makes it as fun as he can. He really cares and will spend time with you inside and out of class if you have questions. I highly recommend taking him for your 100 or 101 class. I will be taking him again.
He provides print-outs of everything you'd need and links to free-access books that are required. Lectures the whole duration of class, going into extreme detail about each book. He values quality over quantity in essays. Quizzes on books are nitpicky and oddly specific/random. Overall, very nice and funny professor and easy A with some effort.
Funny, yaps a lot, prepare to read a lot and put in effort, tough grader however gives you all the tools and help you need to pass.
Endless 5 hour a week discussions of Moby-Dick in roundabout word salad, with pretentious “insights” and outdated teaching. Grades mostly depend on essays that seem punished if you don't praise the book or echo his talking points, so the class feels like recycling his own old ideas then just out of touch with current books and literature.
Took his class almost three years ago now. I actually liked the subject material. But I cant get over the fact that my papers were always graded poorly. Personality wise, he was amazing. What drove me mad was reading a classmates paper, which I knew was bad, only to find out that they scored higher. I dont know why but I never got an A on ANY paper
We read and went over two books, Arcadia and The Landscape of History. Both were great! Very fair grader, especially on the final paper: whatever he said I did wrong on, I did wrong on. Has a couple preferences on written work as does most humanities professors. A few lectures, mainly ones where we didn't talk about the books were myeh. Patient.
