So easy. Slacked off just as much as the students did. Of 15 classes (summer), watched 5 full length movies. EASY!
Clearly liberal teacher. Good guy though. Definately a teacher that makes class interesting by incorporating pop-culture into old boring texts.
he rocks.. he's been an awesome teacher and he knows so much. he makes the class interesting and there is always something from today incorporated with his teaching material. this is my favorite class.
Great teacher! Very passionate. He is liberal but ripped on Kerry and the Democrats just as easily as Bush. Always made class interesting. Come to class, especially on Fridays!
Made class VERY INTERESTING. Gave great lectures. Sometimes too much notes, but tests are very easy.
Awesome guy! Definitely a rehash of AP government, but still a great time! Manufacture of Consent and Chomsky section is the best!
Very smart and an amazing teacher
He's still so young that he totally understands what we're goign through and puts things in a context so that everyone can understand it...not some text book answer to everything...VERY clear
Besides being a very attractive male specimen, he is the smartest teacher I've ever had. This guy makes Einstein look like Daffy Duck. Take this MO-FO's class!
AMAZING teacher, relates to students which makes it easy to understand and actually remember for future classes, actually made Plato and Aristotle interesting- highly recommend!!
I had Rankin last year and I fell in love with politics because of him. He makes it very hard to concentrate on anything else but him.... he's SMOKIN' HOT!!! Plus, he's funny and SOOOO easy to talk to!
Hes young he knows whats up!
Erik is the best poly sci teacher at ISU
Rankin is the****. He is a great teacher, and loves what he is talking about- which is always good. He is willing to help you if your falling behind, and he is very funny and nice. Easy to talk to, and easy to understand.
Rankin knows what he's talking about. His tests are all essay. He gives you notes everyday and they are online. If you're thinkin of takin this class dont buy the logic of American Politics its a waste of money the rest of the books you'll use. Great teacher, he's excited about teaching makes the class very easy!
not alot of substance. Its an easy class overall. He's young and that makes most people happy enough. I do like how he brings in the news and current events.
Erik is nice. His class is easy.Erik is a good 100 level teacher but still needs alot of schooling.I think his need to be liked in his hometown often is too important to him.Erik--get away from Normal.Get a wordly education.
A little cocky and very unclear. He CAN be a really good teacher and gets into it, but sometimes thinks there is nothing outside of Political thought. His weakness is pretty obvious...he thinks he knows more than everyone else
This class is really interesting and Erik teaches it well, but it's really hard material to read. He gives quizzes everyday over the reading so go to class. If you don't read you won't know what's going one. It's a fun class because you can tell that Erik loves to talk about political thought. Since it is required i recommend you take it with Erik.
Erik can be a great teacher, but yes i would agree that he thinks political thought is the best thing next to dieing and going to heaven. My advice is take some other politics courses about stuff that really matters, like judicial processes, public administration, gender politics, metropolitan politics, asia africa latin america, ect.
Erik is a very good teacher, he is very down to earth, he doesn't make you feel like an idiot if you ask stupid questions. He is always willing to help, Erik is one of my favorite teachers out there.
very enthusiastic
Fun and fair
awsome guy. a little full of himself but it's funny.
He is really easy as long as you pay attention and come to class. He actually keeps the class pretty interesting.
E is such a swell guy! Makes political philosophers actually interesting and understandable and relatable to life today. It's also pretty cool that you get to read Fight Club and watch the movie at the end of the semester. I mean how can you not like a guy who lets you look at Brad Pitt without a shirt!
SOOOOOO HOT! Want to touch the Hiney
Ranken is the man. He is my favorite teacher here at ISU. He is the coolest teacher ive ever had. and he is a Cardinals fan, so that makes it even better.
HE'S FUNNY
Erik Rankin is truly gifted in his ability to convey abstract concepts and political theories in an articulate and clear manner. His exams are all essay, or straight from text for lower level courses. As long as you read and come to class, you're golden. Rankin plays favorties, so make sure he knows your name and sees you in class, guaranteed A.
Did not have much interest in this class coming in, but Rankin made it my favorite class to attend. Chooses fairly interesting texts and tests are take home essay straight from them. Relates all discussions close to home. Take any class he is teaching!
He's the man
Rankin is super nice and the class is pretty easy if you do the work. Test are take home so you can't beat that. I like him but he seems like he tries too hard to be your friend rather than your teacher. But besides that he's pretty hot so thats a plus.
I had no intrest in politics until I took this class. It really opened up my eyes into how the government really effects us. Rankin uses real life situations to explain things. As long as you do the readings and go to class..you will be fine! There are many outside of class activities. He does play favorites, so just talk to him and get to know him!
Amazing teacher with knowledge reaching far beyond the confines of Politics. He's very analytical but very thorough. You will learn a lot.
loved this class. the only one i didnt mind coming to first semester. The information is actually interesting and he keeps the class upbeat. although it's all lecture, it's interesting and not mind-numbing. the tests are easy if you go to class and pay attention. moderate amount of classwork, but it's pretty simple and makes sense and isnt pointles
The class was somewhat interesting but the tests are completely unpredictable. Since it is a huge lecture, he isn't very understanding when it comes to make-ups.
Take a class with Rankin if you get the chance! He's very entergetic, loves what he does, he's involved in politics outside of the classroom as well. He knows what he's talking about. His tests weren't too tought, go to class and read and you will do well.
Really cool teacher. I only had him for LinC freshman year, but the class was awesome. He's really chill and has a very good use of words. I would say take this teacher for any class, if available.
He is an awesome professor! He makes the class extremely fun by adding a lot of humor to it. His tests are pretty straight forward and easy. He is nice and considerate and offers extra credit which is so esay you'd be stupid not to take advantage of it.
Very understanding, Commanding presence in the classroom, truly understands his subject matter. Take his classes if you can
AWESOME teacher. If you're into Politics, he makes the classroom a very enjoyable place to learn. Keep up on reading and study for the tests. They're all short answer. Know your material and you're guaranteed a good grade.
Very good teacher. Shows his passion for government, and goes very in-depth into what we're learning. Stays up to date on current politics, and relates it to what we're learning. Great sense of humor. Made class fun.
Exams are really unpredictable, since there is no material from the class on there except for pointless facts from the book. Would not take this class if you actually have an interest in politics.
really good teacher, take his class if you have the opportunity
LOVE LOVE LOVEEEE him.. seriously my favorite teacher by far... LinC is the easiest class ever to take in the first place, but i never once dreading waking up for this class and i am not a mornign person.. great personality and teaching style -makes class ..dare i say..fun!? ..always offers to give extra help. to.. if you get him you are very lucky
SERIOUSLY One of the BEST teachers I have ever had! Cares a lot and offers a TON of easy extra credit. It is well worth doing! If you go to class and take the notes, just study the notes for test and youll be fine with an A or B.
Rankin is by far the best teacher I´ve had thus far. He´s so nice and gives a lot of E.C. Going to class is obviously in your best interest, but there´s really no reason not to get an A in his class. I have him again this semester for a different class and I´m so excited!
Great teacher. Lots of extra credit. Fair. Knows it's a 100 level class. Tests right out of the book. Liberal teacher, but he's really cool.
Prof. Rankin has been the most entertaining professor I've had at ISU. His lectures are easy to follow. The tests aren't too difficult- just be sure to recap on main terms and graphs in the book. There are many opportunities for extra credit too. He's openly liberal and talks about gay rights too much. But overall, he's a great professor.
best teacher @ isu. hands down
Really great! I took him last semester and gave a bunch of EC. He's really cool. Exams were right out of the book and lecture. What I really didn't like was the WSJ quizzes every Thursday.
best teacher at isu. have to take him if you have the chance!
absolutely amazing!! you have to work hard but if you like polsci then you'll love Rankin's classes. He's helpful and willing to work with students. Definatly the best class I had this semester made coming to school fun most days.
One of the best professors I have EVER had! I took this class over the summer in 4 weeks, and each lecture was 2 1/2 hours long, and he held my attention every single time. He's really funny and constantly tries to relate ideas of gov. and politics to our everyday lives. If you have the chance to take him, I highly recommend that you do!
Great teacher. Extraordinarily passionate. You NEED to go to class every time. Don't worry, it's usually pretty fun and hilarious. He goes over EVERYTHING in the class period that is going to be on the small tests at the end of every other class. Literally, just take good notes, and you will be absolutely, 100% fine.
AMAZING teacher.
hands down best teacher at isu. i had no interest in politics before taking this class, professor rankin made this class fun and was hilarious, tests are not hard but you need to study and there is a quiz every week but if you go to class its simple. my favorite professor i have had here and he's not bad to look at either.
Rankin was the BEST professor I had since I been in school, he was funny and the class was never boring. He does ask alot out of you, but once the class is over you'll see it was worth it. I learned so much out of this class and if you are a political science major you MUST have him atleast once!!!!!
Nice guy and somewhat open-minded but driven by his ideology first and foremost. Downright historically WRONG in many instances. Poor pedagogical approach to instruction but knows how to create a discussion out a lecture, so not all bad. Poli-sci is full of demagogues--but Rankin is relatively okay.
Great class. Makes philosophy fun. If you need any department or advisement help he will help out as much as possible. Helped me with an internship and getting exemptions to several classes
You will earn that H. This is not a large room where you can blend in, its a small room where everyday you must sign in. There are not attendance points, but if your borderline at the end it can mean the difference between two grades. Classes are very enjoyable and he makes it relevant to current events. If your a poli sci major take this class!
Erik Rankin is awesome. Take his classes. Enough said.
Don't worry Rankin's mom, I think he's one of the best teachers I've ever had! Very helpful and interesting.
i have no idea what is going on in this class. reallly reallly confusing.
Dear Mrs. Rankin's mom. Your son is a great teacher, maybe the best I've ever had. In fact, I think he might be a genius. Please tell him to give his whole section A's this semester
Great professor-favorite so far. good incorporation of humor throughout his lesson plans. dont mistake fun for easy- but he keeps it interesting. would take again
Great, great teacher. Keeps the class up beat and interesting.
Great class, great professor. Pretty funny most of the time, and bright the rest of the time. Don't be surprised if you see him on the soap box a few times during the semester, but that's half of his charm. .... Wears tight pants alot. I'll leave that for you to judge.
Really hard class and he never even talks about what will be on the exams. He just preaches his own views on politics. Really annoying class couldn't stand going because he was so annoying. Exams are impossible too.
interesting class. i suggest reading all the chapters prior to class if you have no politics background. hes kind of intimidating because he has his lists of pet peeves, made me not want to go ask him questions. so he could be more approachable. but he deffinitely made me fall in love with politics. i only got a b though, reallly tough class.
Easy A if you know anything about politics and government. Going to class and reading the book is a waste of time. Just review the online power points for the tests. Preaches his own political ideology during class(progressive/liberal) Downright historically wrong in some instances and has ideological questions on his exams. Easy A, bad professor.
Erik Rankin is the best professor I have had at ISU and a wonderful advisor!! Take him if you can!!
Funny guy, keeps class interesting, very informative. Not an easy A but a teacher I'd reccomend taking
Rankin is the best professor I have had at ISU. He is passionate about what he teaches, and he has an ability to make sometimes dry subjects more interesting. He has always been incredibly helpful outside of classes especially as an advisor. I highly recommend taking any of his courses.
A good teacher that can preach his own believes but thats because its almost impossible not to so in such a class.
Great teacher
Awesome teacher. Makes class entertaining and offers a lot of extra credit.
So great. Super helpful, knowledgeable, and fun. Presents information well and in an interesting way. mildly disorganized but doesn't disrupt from class efficiency. Loved it.
Never had a better teacher in my entire life. Material was a little dry but Rankin made the class enjoyable through humor and class discussion. I have never learned so much. He knows his stuff and is funny as hell. Not an easy A but it won't kill you. Assigns take home exams. Reading notes due every class. Strict Attendance policy. Great Teacher!
Great Teacher. Took Summer Course. Knows his stuff and wants to help!
He is a wonderful teacher. Its not an easy A but you learn a lot and he expects a lot out of you. I definitely recommended him! very funny and cute too
Rankin is a good teacher, and he knows his stuff. He can be a tad erratic sometimes and makes it a little hard to follow. But if you read, try, and study you should be fine. As far as academic advising...you're kinda on your own. Helpful, but sometimes not very approachable.
Probably the best teacher I've ever had. He's hilarious. Definitely not an easy A, but if you keep up with the readings and go to class you should be fine. Tests are all written and aren't easy, but he presents the material so well that I never had a problem. He is very helpful whenever you need it. Just study and do the readings/homework.
Rankin is awesome. Such a funny guy! You have to read the book for exams but he usually keeps the tests similar to what is discussed on his powerpoints. You have exams, map quizzes, & quizzes on The Wall Street Journal. Reading The Wall Street Journal isn't fun because you can never be sure what's on the quiz that week. Good class.
Rankin is awesome! I strongly suggest you take one of his classes!
A God amongst men. Open minded, tolerant, intelligent, passionate, and charismatic, Rankin is the reason why college can be amazing. GOAT professor at ISU.
Super helpful, and hilarious. Class goes by so fast. it also doesnt hurt he is smoking hott
POL 100 is the beginning course for POL Majors, with that said if you cannot handle sarcastic witty remarks, get out of this major. Rankin offers a great deal of knowledge in his class, and all he asks of you is that you take something away from his class. Office hours are nice; 6 per week, as well as always willing to just sit and talk in office.
Makes class entertaining. You can tell he enjoys what he does
Great professor. High expectations, however very fair and easy to do well in his course as long as you go to class, and have something to contribute to discussion every once in awhile. Do the work, attend class, and you'll easily get an A.
LOVE him. He's my advisor and by far my favorite teacher at ISU. He helps out any way he can and makes class enjoyable. Take a class with him if possible!!!
Chill dude, easy grader, and wants his kids to get A's in the class.
Fun fact! Rankin keeps a class roster with everyone's ULID and ID photo. When you interact and ask questions, he puts a star next to your name and will bump your grade if you need it. In short, interact! He's a hilarious guy who knows how to make a lecture hall way more entertaining.
one of the best teachers I've ever had. super nice and keeps the class interested. he's so funny and pretty hot. get involved. never any homework but take notes in class and pay attention. tests are pretty hard
He made the subject matter interesting. going to class is not required but you should go because random things that he says in class will be on the test. There are only 3 tests and no final. Easy B. but if you actually try you can get an A.
He was very helpful when I actually got to talk to him. I prefer talking to the teacher than the TA. You can pass the class as long as you actually pay attention to the lectures, reading really helps too! Use the book! He does not always refer to the book or tell you to buy it, but it really does help a lot! He is a fair grader too.
His tests are the only think that a difficult in this class. All the other work isn't bad. Plus he's very entertaining. By far one of my favorite teachers at ISU
Great guy - inspirational teacher and a helpful advisor.
Rankin is a great professor who really understands college students and how to get through to them. I can't remember a single lecture where I didn't laugh out loud because he's so hilarious. BEWARE: THE TESTS ARE VERY HARD.
Rankin is the bomb diggity. He makes his lectures interesting by adding many funny rants that mostly relate to the lecture. He is also a local politician and is very knowledgeable of the ins and outs of politics, and was able to introduce it very well. If you're not offended by his vulgarity, he is certainly an entertaining and educated professor.
Super easy class, lectures are straight from the textbook. Theres an online quiz everyweek but its super easy to find the answers as theyre straight from the book and theres no time limit on them. These quizzes are 100 points each and the bulk of your grade so you could get a C or D on the midterm and still get an A. Lectures arent boring and help
He was one of the most funniest teachers I have taken. Really made the class much better. The weekly quizzes are pretty easy and if you get 100% on them, then you can easily get an A in the class. He gives a good amount of extra credit. I would definitely take this class just because of him.
Professor Rankin is definitely an entertaining professor. He not only keeps your attention in lectures, but really wants his students to participate and do well in the course. Attendance is mandatory, but he understands things come up. He is approachable outside of class. The midterm and final are lengthy, but if you really study, you can pass.
Rankin is by far the funniest professors I have every taken here at ISU. I did not really pay attention to much, and I still pulled out a B. Online quizzes each week, you can find the answers in the book or google. There are only 2 test (Midterm, Final). They are not that hard, but if you go to class, study, you will do fine in the class.
Rankin really makes class fun, he is a super entertaining lecturer. Most of your points come from online quizzes in the textbook and there is a midterm and a final. Its really easy as long as you keep up with the quizzes. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Rankin is hilarious! Loved his lectures. Would not put me to sleep. Great teacher for students that are not very into politics.
Rankin is hilarious. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I still go because it's entertaining. You will have quizzes every week but only two tests (midterm and final). You can find all the answers to the quizzes in the book. It's an easy and fun class, I would definitely take his class!!
The lectures are very fun! Rankin is a great and fun teacher, and really shows his passion for politics. He definitely knows his stuff. Makes a lot of jokes and always keeps the class entertained.
I absolutely loved his class. He literally could make the most boring topic seem interesting. He's absolutely hilarious.
Before taking this class I had my regrets and I was worried that this would be my hardest/worst class, however it ended up being my favorite/best class. I can honestly say that after taking this class I'm truly interested in politics. Rankin is my favorite professor at ISU so far. Highly recommend this class!
Hilarious, connects greatly with the students, and gives extra credit. Nothing really to dislike aside from there was only two exams, and each was pretty long and not that easy.
How To Get an A: There are online quizzes every week, take your time and get as many right as possible - they are most of your grade. Go to class even though it's not mandatory, there are random extra credit opportunities - try to get all of them. There are two tests which aren't as many points but if you read the chapters you will do well on them
easily the best and my favorite teacher I've ever had
Professor Rankin is one of the best. He has a great sense of humor and is sarcastic which makes class entertaining. Weekly quizzes online but you can look up them or as long as you keep up on the weekly chapter readings you'll be. As long as you take the quizzes and study for the test, easy A or B.
Best professor of my semester. He is so funny and actually made the class enjoyable. He gives ton of extra credit, especially if his big lectures are missing a ton of people
I absolutely loved Professor Rankin. I don't usually like learning about history/politics, but his comedic personality made the lectures enjoyable. There are online quizzes every week, but they're not very hard if you read the textbook. He offers extra credit some days during class, so it might be a good idea to attend.
The greatest professor i've ever had. Class is super easy, you literally just have to show up and you'll get an A because the exams are basically the same as the online quizzes every week. Side note: he's hilarious, and a cutie!
You have to read to pass this class, and its a LOT of reading. BUT his lectures are super entertaining!
Good teacher. Really makes you think. I'd take him again for another class. You have to do your readings though if you want to do well in the class.
Best teacher for a GenEd I've had at ISU. Easy A as long as you do the work. All assignments are online except the 3 in-person exams. Attendance is not required and you can still pass easily without showing up, although Rankin has a great personality and is hilarious that the lectures aren't even bad. He really cares about everyone and all students
Rankin is by far my favorite professor I have had at Illinois State. He has taught me so much and he's so funny and makes lectures fun and interesting. If I could take this class again, I would.
He was by far one of the best professors I have had at ISU. His lectures were always so interesting and its way more conversational rather than a teacher talking at you. Hes a super funny guy and he knows what he's talking about. The class is easy, but because he makes it easy. I think with another professor the material would have been harder
Hes a fantastic professor and advisor. Easily one of the best professors Ive ever had. Always was able to point me in the direction of where to go if he couldnt fix an advising issue himself. SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT. (5-6 options for 25 points each) If he thinks the class isnt reading there will be pop quizzes so read and engage in lecture!
Professor Rankin is really a gem. If you're given the chance, take one of his classes. His content is not difficult (on the first day he said "You have to be stupid to not pass my class). He also is hilarious and makes lectures enjoyable.
If you aren't into politics the lectures are super long and boring. Other than that, this class was pretty easy. If you do all of the online quizzes, go to the review sessions, and sit in lecture you will not fail the class.
I really enjoyed his lectures, he's super funny & smart. But I disliked the course itself. I love politics but it was hard to get an A in this class. The only grades are quizzes & tests, and the final & midterm are graded so heavy. I wish for a gen ed the point system would be a bit more fair. Also he had like 6 TAs that never did anything???
Rankin uses colorful language in class but he is very passionate about the topics he teaches. No papers are written for the class but all grades are dependent on 3 quizzes worth 100-150 points and a final and midterm worth 300 points each. The quizzes are taken at home and do anything you can to get the notecard offered for the midterm and final!
Great professor! Hilarious!Gives out weekly quizzes that are very easy since they are based on the slide-shows he puts up in class and what he talks about. He also shares these power-points on Reggienet so they are accessible when taking the quiz. There are 3 exams and the last one is the final. Go to the study sessions they literally give answers!
I loved this class so much. only 3 tests and one quiz a week. they are super easy but going to class really helps on some of the questions. he is super entertaining and cares deeply about what he's talking about. he is super funny and chill I would take his class again.
Rankin is an awesome professor! I really loved his class and it was very straight-forward. Anyone that gives Rankin a bad rating probably didn't go to the lectures. His weekly quizzes and tests are heavily based on stuff you would know only if you went to class. He loves participation! Rankin does teach to his own ideology but is a great guy!
Erik Rankin is, by far, one of the best lecturers I have had at ISU. His vibrant stories and methods explaining the material brings life to the political system of the United States. Grade is based on three tests throughout the semester (3rd test is the final). Attendance is not mandatory and all of the slides are online. Don't buy the book.
Go to class! Just do it. I pulled a B in the class but thought it was going to be an easy A. First test is easiest so do well on it.
I took the online political science course with Professor Rankin over the summer, and it is my biggest regret at ISU. Professor Rankin is not good about giving feedback or grades in a timely manner so there is no way to understand why you have missed something. If you want to get an A, do not take this course.
Professor Rankin is one of the most educated professors I have ever had at ISU. His classes are incredibly entertaining, he never loses your interest. As entertaining as they are, they are also very informative. You can truly tell that he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Take him for every class that you have the chance to.
Professor Rankin is an amazing Professor. He wants everyone to succeed, so he is always willing to meet outside of class. His lectures keep you entertained because he doesnt just read off the slides. I was always engaged with everything he said. If you actually do your own work an A is definitely possible. Take his class if you get the chance.
If you regularly attend class and take good notes, the book is not necessary. I enjoyed the class lectures because he made them relatable. You only have 3 exams total and 1/4 of your grade is from weekly quizzes.
He is definitely the best professor I have had, I would 100% take this class again! He is very engaging to listen to and his lectures are never boring, you can tell he truly knows what he is talking about. The class isnt hard either, the notes are basically the same as the tests and there are weekly quizzes based off of the notes each week.
Don't skip class. Even if your not interested in politics, Rankin makes this class awesome. Absolutely loved this guy, he was hilarious and informed me about a ton of real-world applications. Study a ton for the exams and complete the online weekly quizzes and you should finish with a good grade. MAKE SURE TO DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT (a ton).
Rankin is the best! He's funny and there's a ton of extra credit. He really knows what he's talking about and wants you to enjoy class. If you show up to class regularly, you will have no problem getting a good grade.
Amazing professor. Attendance was not mandatory but I never skipped because I enjoyed the class. He is hilarious, brings in a lot of guest speakers, and answers emails very quickly. ** actually had him for POL 221 due to a last minute professor change but that wasn't an option on here**
Dr. Rankin was an amazing professor. While a professing Democrat, he presented every argument fairly, and was genuinely interested in presenting both sides. He was absolutely hilarious, by far one of the funniest professors I've had. His content was interesting, and his experience in politics makes his content personal and realistic.
This class was very interesting. He is very passionate when teaching theory. Attending and participation are 25% of your grade. You also have 5 exams, a project, and the final. If you have any questions about the material, just ask. There is a lot of reading but the stuff you learn is very enlightening. Take his class if you have the chance.
I loved professor Rankin, he made politics bearable. I would come to class because the weekly quizzes we have is mostly over what he discusses in class
Rankin is funny and makes politics interesting. Don't take this class without anyone else. Do your work, study, and you'll get an A.
Rankin is really funny and makes class interesting. There are 3 exams and 13 quizzes (lowest 3 quizzes are dropped). Show up to class because the tests and quizzes are based off of what he says.
There are weekly quizzes which are fairly easy and 3 exams. He's super funny and makes lectures interesting. He presents topics objectively and fairly from both sides of the argument. Show up for lectures because a few questions come from his lectures. You still will have to study a little bit for the exams but you can get an A easily if you try.
Solid dude, fun class. If you get the opportunity to take him you definitely should.
I had Rankin for fall 2020 online and he was by far my fav of the semester. The lectures were interesting and he tells things with no bias so it makes it even more enjoyable. Definitely show up to class because majority of the quizzes are based off of his lectures (you will want to regardless)! I would 100% recommend anyone to take his class.
Rankin's class is one of my favorites! I didn't like politics before but he explains it so well and is such a great guy. Definitely take his class!!!
One of the best professors Ive ever had. Hes a great guy and makes the class super fun. Anyone looking to take POL106 should take it with Rankin! You have a quiz every week about what you learned over the course of the week and if you pay attention and show up youll do fine. Pretty easy class and super fun and interesting too!
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE teacher, he is so funny and makes you actually WANT to come to class to learn. One quiz each week and you'll get good grades on them as they're all about what is discussed in class & 3 tests on zoom (final is considered the 3rd test) that are a little hard but you wont get less than a B on them and theres reviews. BEST TEACHER
Loved this class. Two lectures a week and one quiz a week over the lectures. Exams are easy if you go to review sessions. Rankin is entertaining and makes politics interesting.
Rankin is quite possibly the best pol teacher out there. he genuinely cares about his students and is super funny. he makes lectures entertaining and fun to attend
POL 161 was online but we met on zoom twice a week. Before meeting he expects you to read. There were 8 books in total. the weekly quizzes were made but the GA and were 8-10 multiple choice and 2 short answers. Oral midterm and finals with him or his GA were you grade yourself and they agree or counter. Easy A if you go to class and listen.
Erik Rankin is amazing! He understood that online learning wasnt the best but made the transition super easy with zoom lectures. He lets you miss 3 lectures without harming your grade and drops the 3 lowest quizzes and attendance points. the class is a lot to remember but he also understands that and makes class so fun. he cares about hisstudents
Really great guy
Passionate and kind. Humorous and very knowledgeable and experienced.
Took this class online and Professor Rankin was awesome! Weekly quizzes, and a couple exams.
I really liked prof rankins class!! I thought that it was a very interesting class and a pretty easy class as long as you showed up to lecture and pay attention. I definitely would take another class with him!
Professor Rankin is absolutely amazing. He is very funny and makes the class fly by with his lectures. There are weekly quizzes and 3 tests (one of those being the final) which are based on the lectures. Go to the review sessions before the tests and you should be fine. There is a textbook, but you don't really need to read it. 10/10
Professor Rankin's class was a complete breeze! The course is definitely lecture heavy, but Rankin is entertaining and enthusiastic and makes class time fly by. There are some required textbooks, but don't worry about buying them. If you pay attention to the lecture, that's all you will need for success!
Prof Rankin, was a great professor! This class was very lecture heavy and slide heavy but he made this content not boring by relating it to the real world now and he was hilarious. We took a quiz once a week and 3 tests in total. He provided study guides for the tests and had study guide review sessions which made studying way better, and tests easy
Professor Rankin is easily one of my favorite professors so far. He is completely unbiased whether its lecture related or not. I've always had trouble understanding the easiest political concepts, but I never got lower than a B- on graded stuff. Review sessions help TREMENDOUSLY. The final was easy too, I got 100%, and I don't get A's often.
Rankin is a great professor. Quizzes each week which arent difficult if you listen during lectures. Tests were on Zoom with no notes but quizzes are open note (he says he doesnt call them open note but also says he can not stop you). Very funny guy, just listen in class & youll be good.
Professor Rankin made lectures fairly engaging. While they could be dry at times, he jokes a lot to keep you listening. They are not mandatory, but it helps to go for weekly quizzes. His exams are on Zoom and fairly easy as long as you go to class and the review sessions. He also remains unbiased with his political views in class.
He is amazing. This material can be very dry, but he does such a good job at making it entertaining. He is so funny, and the tests are super easy if you go to class and the review sessions that are offered. He also is very politically unbiased while teaching which was really nice. Coming from a non-political science major, I would 100% recommend.
Although this class requires a lot of reading which the material can be boring Prof. Rankin never fails to make the class laugh and enjoy learning about these topics. This class consisted of 3 tests 13 quizzes and 2 extra credit opportunities. As someone who is not a political science major, I recommend Professor Rankin to everyone.
What an amazing professor. The class is all lectures but they don't feel that way. He's very engaging and entertaining, which makes learning about the constitution way easier to learn about. Tests were done over zoom and were based on the weekly online quizzes. I wish I could take another class with him!
Professor Rankin is an amazing professor. He is very funny and entertaining, but he is also informative and organized. He made politics fun to learn about. I will genuinely miss attending his lectures.
Professor Rankin was a very funny and entertaining teacher, but his biases and inappropriate jokes can make the class very confusing and uncomfortable. The quizzes are mainly opinion based and some of the questions can be worded very confusing. Easy A if you come to class, but you have to take very detailed notes.
Overall, the class is very educational and beneficial, if you are a political science major. However, he makes very inappropriate comments during class and gives bias information based on certain subjects. The quizzes and tests are the worst part about the class. The questions are about his opinions and and not factual information from class.
Sure he's funny and somewhat stays on topic but he gets pretty biased in his lectures. The quizzes are also mostly just about his opinion or what he had to say about something but never really questions revolving the matter. You will definitely need to take note of every little thing he says, might as well record the lecture for later.
POL 106 is by far the best class I have ever taken at this university and it is all because of Professor Rankin. He is absolutely hilarious and very passionate about teaching the material and connecting with his students. He is extremely helpful and supportive of every one of his students. I would greatly recommend taking a class taught by Rankin.
Best professor at this university. Absolutely hilarious and actually cares about the material and his students. You can easily tell how much he loves teaching. Definitely take him.
If anything can be said about this professor, it's that he truly cares about his subject and his students. He is incredibly knowledgeable and is very clear about communicating that to his students. He goes above and beyond to make the class enjoyable, and you don't realize you're learning half the time.
Rankin is great guy! He makes lectures and the stuff you are learning more intriguing and fun. The only work he gives out is weekly lecture quizzes and 3 exams. Class is super easy if you literally just pay attention. HIGHLY recommended taking him!!!!
Prof Rankin makes class very interesting! Although attendance is not mandatory, it is good to go because tests and quizzes have a lot of information based on the lectures. Rankin keeps class super interesting and makes a boring topic fun to learn about. Definitely would recommend this class and Prof Rankin!
Professor Rankin is probably one of the best professors I have ever had at ISU. His class is always a joy. Its like going to class and a comedy club. As long as you go to class and pay attention you will do just fine. He says you don't need to take notes and I agree, if you pay attention the class is a breeze. Quizzes are also super easy.
Professor Rankin was an amazing professor going into my first semester of college. His lectures are informational but you will need to be in lectures and pay attention to what's happening to do well on the quizzes and tests. He has an amazing sense of humor and while he can be biased at times, he makes sure every student is heard.
This professor was the best teacher I've had in college!
Very laid back and easy. Pay attention in lectures and you will be fine.
Rankin is great, he's hilarious and makes you look forward to going to his class, one of the best profs at isu, show up to class, be engaged and attend review sessions and you'll do just fine
I personally think Erik Rankin is a well educated, funny, hilarious Professor. However, his teaching style just was not for me. He often went off in a bunch of long targets and stories. They were really funny but it made me really struggle staying focused. He suggests buying a textbook that is really interesting and an easy read and inexpensive.
Rankin is the funniest professor you will ever have. He seems to care about his students as well. The class is made up of 3 or 4 exams, and around 13 quizzes. Attendance is not MANDATORY, but many of the quiz questions are: "according to the lecture", "according to professor rankin", as long as you listen in class, you will be fine. Easy A.
Genuinely one of my favorite classes I've taken just because he's such a great professor. Every assignment/test is online and if you do go to the lectures they're pretty interesting
professor rankin was very interesting to listen to during lecture and I enjoyed his class. he posts all the slides and the workload is very light. weekly quiz based on the lectures and the tests are very similar to the study guides. the course is also very organized when it comes to lectures and there are no surprises on the tests and quizzes
Grade is based off weekly quizzes, which are easy but many of the questions ask "per the lecture" so you have to actually attend lecture to know the answer and 3 main tests. They have a study guide for each test and the questions on the test are very similar to the study guide. His teaching style is odd but not bad. It can be hard to focus. Easy A
I wasn't the biggest fan but I definitely think he is your best option out of all the politics teachers. He does his best to make the lectures interesting, but you have to make sure you are paying attention the ENTIRE time. There is a weekly quiz and 3 tests, all of which are very lecture based (unfortunately mostly his opinion rather than content)
5 stars because Rankinism told me to.
Get ready for zoom exams. Impossible to take notes on everything he says.
Rankin is my favorite professor by far. He is so funny and the lectures are fun to go to. He rants about the constitution and I enjoy it. Beware you have quizzes every week except when there is an exam. The TAs make the quizzes and go to the review sessions before the exam they 100% help. I would take this class again 100%! RANKINISM!
Lectures are very easy to listen to, he makes it very enjoyable. Quizzes and tests are based on things in the lectures, so as long as you attend class you can very easily have an A in the class.
This was the one class I actually looked forward to going to every week. Just be sure to pay attention in lecture and refer to notes on weekly quizzes.
He was the best I want to take him again. All test online, best lectures, and he will make you laugh. Easy class if you want a A go to class because he has weekly quizzes and its things he said in class made by his TA.
I took this class as a gen-ed my freshman year. I like Prof Rankin because he not only cares about his students' education, but their mental and well being. There were 2 required books, not text books, so pretty affordable. He made lectures fun to attend, I went to every class (and I skip, ALOT). He teaches politics along with valuable life lessons
Great teacher! On the first day of class he tells you not to bother with taking notes, and he's right. It was really easy to just sit and listen to his lectures, he's extremely engaging and the information sticks. Slides are on canvas. Quizzes are made by the TAs, and they have review sessions- GO TO THOSE!!! They give so much helpful info. Easy A!
Can't figure out why everyone loves this prof. Spent half the class time on a book unrelated to the course because his friend wrote it, and it showed up on exams. Quizzes contained his random opinions and offhand comments just to see if we were paying attention in lecture - I failed 4. Despite studying I got only Cs on exams and I'm an A student.
He's super engaging and fun to listen to. He teaches so many life lessons along with politics and it was honestly such a refreshing way for civics/politics to be taught. There are two books that you will need, but you can find them for really really cheap. Great guy!
This is the best professor I have ever had. He is super chill and layed back. Attendance is not mandatory, and the exams and quizes are pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class. He made the topics very engaging and entertaining and I would always enjoy going to his lectures.
you will have a great time
Rankin is a good guy, entertaining, and probably your best option for govt. He stays on topic and his lectures are grabbing; however, his TA's make the quizzes during lectures, so they are often his opinion. He often makes statements on things he isn't an expert in (understandable) but what he says matters for the grade, not the facts.
Prof. Rankin is my favorite professor I have had so far at ISU! He makes lectures very interesting and applicable to real life. Attendance is not mandatory, but some of the quiz questions will ask about what he said in class. Definitely recommend him over other professors I have heard of for politics!
Rankin is an amazing professor, but you better hope you have good TAs. The TAs do all the work, all Rankin does is lecture. If you have awful TAs, then good luck. Weekly quizzes that are based off of what he says in class, so you should go to class. Three tests that are worth 250 points. Gives extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester.
He had great lectures that made the topics truly interesting. He typically instructs his classes to not take notes, and as someone who always takes notes I thought that was odd. I didn't take notes, and I ended up getting As on all the quizzes and tests. He teaches the material so well that all you have to do is simply show up and pay attention.
PLEASE PICK HIM AS YOUR PROFESSOR!!!!!!! He is so good at his job and you can tell he genuinely cares about what he is teaching about. He is also very funny. As long as you show up to class and listen, you will get a good grade. He even tells you he prefers if you don't take notes and just sit back and listen!! I wish I could have him again!
Rankin is an incredible speaker and made politics so interesting for me. I'm a geo major, but his class is still the best I've probably ever had.The class itself doesn't have textbooks but there are two normal books he asks you to get for readings. I found them cheap online. Quizzes/tests easy as long as you've done the reading and come to class.
Prof Rankin was great! He's super funny and willing to work with you. There are three exams and weekly quizzes. He gives out study guides and the TAs have an optional study session before each exam. His study guides always correspond with what is on the exams. The TAs are very knowledgeable and will answer all of your questions.
Overall a great class his Lectures are actually interesting. You only get graded on quizzes and tests though, you have to read the textbook. Exams are bit challenging and long but overall as long as you study for them you should be fine.
very funny, kind, and cares for students. he shares his own opinion but does so in a beneficial way. some people i've spoken to view him as very forward but i don't think it's in a negative way. he encourages people to not take notes and instead be present which i have found to work out just fine. overall, great class and you will have fun.
Best guy to listen to ramble for an hour
Rankin is pretty funny and his lectures are actually pretty interesting although redundant because u don't necessarily need to attend to get a good grade. Weekly quizzes which are all the exact same questions that end up on the tests.
Professor Rankin is a pretty good professor. The class is just heavily graded on tests and you only have 3 of them... none are dropped so if you do badly on one but great on the other two you will not have that shown in your grade. Hes super funny overall. Barely did anything for this class
He's actually the best professor/ teacher I have ever had. He is passionate about what he is teaching about and it keeps everyone interested. He's a great teacher and amazing man. Take his class and learn about Rankinism
Rankin is a funny guy. He is a bit intimidating if you haven't taken a class with him before but you will come to find he is actually a teddy bear. He always makes lectures engaging and even though they are not mandatory, a lot of students still show up for most if not all lectures. The exams and quizzes were super easy. GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS!!!!!!
Super amazing guy and super easy class. Post all slides online. I stopped going to class after the second exam and still scored a 100% on the last. Last exam is the final which is NOT cumulative. I wish i cared more about the content because he is an amazing professor but class was easy enough I would not need to go.
Rankin is the most hilarious professor I've ever had. Lectures aren't mandatory, but if you go he will make it engaging and worth your time. The assessments are easy. He posts all slides and you are expected to read the textbook. He makes study guides and his TAs host review sessions. Lots of extra credit is available.
I loved Rankin, he spoke a lot of controversy but kept it very real which is something a lot of us need. Very inspirational and I suggest taking if you need an upbeat teacher, very funny too.
Best professor I had so far. The class was easy and the lectures were basically an interesting Ted Talk.
Honestly, this class was a breeze. He's very nice and communicates easily. He definitely leans liberal but isn't obnoxiously biased, which is great for a POL professor. The TAs were lovely and basically gave you the exam questions through study guides. Overall, would heavily recommend. And to be honest, he's not bad to look at, which helps.
He was SO FUNNY. Politics can be a very heavy subject but he made it clear that people do not know how to have uncomfortable conversations. He used a book for all of the quizzes and the quizzes were literally the test. So easy, I stopped showing up to class when I realized all the test information was in the text book. (still go to class)
By far the best professor I have had at isu. He is extremely knowledgable and makes lectures entertaining. There are 4 tests and a quiz every week which you take outside of class and the lowest two get dropped. I recommend every one take this class if they can. More liberal leaning but makes you think about both sides with facts and evidence.
I've had Rankin in the past and really enjoyed but him but this class is about as bad as it can get online. Rankin's main strength is his lecturers, which obviously don't happen when it's 100% online. Weekly reading notes that are annoying and worthless to cover attendance make this class something I would never recommend to anyone.
This class was mainly lectures, with 3 exams, one being the final which was not cumulative. All of the slides are posted online and the study guides are extremely helpful when studying for the exams. I highly recommend taking his class.
Great lecturer, make sure to attend the exam review sessions the TAs host.
He is a very engaging and funny professor. Definitely recommend taking whatever class you can with him. The only downside to this class is it's only quizzes and exams but they aren't bad at all as long as you study. Finishing with an A is not difficult.
I love his class honestly, the lectures are very engaging and funny so I actually look forward to showing up. He also gives study guides and review sessions for exams so even if you don't do the readings, it's very easy to get an A. I would definitely take him if you can.
Rankin is just one of those professors you never forget about. Such an amazing guy and has such a great story. As for the class, he is so involved in it and he makes the class so interesting that you're just engaged in it. I enjoyed it. The only things I found hard on the test was the Arete book but that's just because I didn't want to read it
Genuinely a really great professor, nothing bad to say. Paying attention in other large lecture halls is pretty difficult but he makes it easy and fun. He is funny and manages to make a politics class entertaining! I would totally take a class with him again and highly recommend.
Turning this into an online class for a semester and absolutely wasn't prepared to teach online. No lectures or guidance, just posted his slides that were meant for in person lecture. Horribly unclear grading criteria. Seems like he would be good irl, but run away if it's online!!! Worst class experience at ISU
Pretty easy class! Online quizzes each week and 3 exams total. As someone who doesn't usually enjoy talking about politics, he made it fun and easy to follow along, always making jokes and engaging with the class! Also, his class has optional study sessions before the exams that were very helpful, so definitely go to those!!!
I have little interest in politics but Rankin made class fun with lots of real life examples! The only grades are quizzes and exams and a few quizzes are dropped at the end. There is helpful study guide before each exam. I really enjoyed this class and would recommend, great gen-ed!
Rankin is a very cool, funny professor. He does recommend not taking notes, but if you're the type of person that learns better writing things down, do not listen to that. Overall, I really enjoyed the class, especially when he would discuss the Arete book (I would not recommend buying, he covers anything important in class).
Really cool and down to earth guy. Has experience in politics and lots of great stories. Really enjoyed his class. Great gen- ed for any student to take.
