Talks from beginning to end of period unless you get to watch a video (yay!). Very few assignments, only some essays and one project. You can sleep through class, as long as you spend lots of time on the assignments.
One of the best history professors ever. REALLY knows his stuff. Super easy if you pay attention, take notes, & do the work - PLUS you just might learn something! Great experience. HIGHLY recommend.
Very hard classes, but a very good teacher, worth the experience.
Awesome history professor, very knowledgable. Lectures are crammed with exciting, intense and important information. I graduated EdCC a while ago, but still look over my notes from this class.
You can sense his love for history when he speaks to the class. He is easily understood, and clearly wants to see students succeed. I had no interest in the class prior to taking it, nor had I ever paid attention to American history. Now I'll be looking for other American history classes with Erik!
What a great Teacher. His lectures are lively an humorous while still being very informative. His Gearge Bush and Larry King impressions are dead on! And my understanding of this time period was greatly increased! I'd take him again in a minute! Thanks Erik
Great teacher! Loved the class and lectures were very interesting.
Great teacher. Made a subject that I always hated interesting!
I wasn't that interested in taking a history class, only took on because of requirements. He made me interested. I put a 1 in my interest before the class now its a 5. Thanks Erik and I will see you next quarter.
too intelligent to be working at edcc
A very great teacher. He is a hard grader. But on the plus side he has no tests only papers!!
If you like history this guy makes it hellla fun! It was the best class ever. not too much homework, good tests everything Id take it again

Great teacher, very easy class. For our final, instead of having us write a paper he asked us to pretend we where going to and just photocopy our sources that we would use and staple them together. :) Got a 4.0
This is seriously the best teacher I have ever had! He is so passionate about what he teaches and it is contagious. I recommend his classes to every student, I learned so much from him
Talks alot, yet with that said, he informs us of every little detail and puts it into our minds. The only problem is maybe sometimes to run on class that effects our minds sitting for a long period of time listening to someone talk. Other than that, great teacher, kind of hard class though.
Very informative, learned a lot.
This instructor has an inappropriate level of cursing. He has tenure and doesn’t care is the f-bomb troubles students with its oft repetition.
Is generally overall interesting teacher. Does let his own politics (generally liberal) flow over into his teaching and grading but overall a strong teacher. Funny most of the time, but self-censors himself too much. Those commenting about excessive explitive use have never really listened. Rarely if ever swears, and if he does, he censors himself.
I found Erik to be a passionate instructor and his teaching style will peek your curiousity to learn more. I would totally recommend any of his classes!
Very lecture oriented class. Immensely interesting. He has little tolerance for slackers and those with poor attendance. Good sense of humor; does good impressions. Enjoyed reading material in his 248 class, 245 was a bit dry. Intriquing to question after class; he knows so much it is insane. Brilliant man.
Really excellent lecturer. It is easy to get on his side by showing your interest in dissidents. Easy! He is a very hip and liberal guy and it shows in his very humorous lectures.
Although this guy is undoubtably smart and funny, I dislike his "sage on stage" teaching style. No matter how entertaining a prof is, two hours of lecture gets boring. He uses blackboard as a place for discussion, however I find the internet to be a poor place for discussion.
very nice guy. has a huge passion for history. very smart knows his stuff. It's actually an easy class. He grades kin of hard i think. but i think it's because he has such a passion for this stuff. good class tho. made it very interesting it was only 2 days of in class rest was online. it was a hybrid course. very good class overall.
I learned a lot from Eric. Great text and online course design. The online version requires short essay posts and the tests are closed book, but fairly easy. Essay feedback was confusing as to how the essay could be improved, but Eric's passion for history is inspiring and led me to choose history as my major. Eric is an excellent teacher.
Took online course and it is a very sloppy online course. Never posts due dates; they are buried six pages into his syllabus. No make ups. Thinks he is an English teacher. Very rude in his comments and not at all helpful. Please consider taking this course with a different teacher.
This is for online classes. Most of class is on Blackboard online. Eric Ray write some each week, doesn't need to read. Not on test, not in book. Not much interesting. Do work then forget.
Erik thinks that he is a English teacher, so beware b/c he grades really hard on your papers. I have taken two English classes at EdCC and received 4.0's. I enjoyed the class, but I could have done the reading on my own. I received a 3.5 in the class, but it should have been a 4.0. I completed all DB's and couldn't even get an 80%. Be Aware!!!!
Seriously the worst teacher I have ever had for an online class, the class average was 59%, a failing grade, no curve, enough said.
He's the best teacher ever! Pleeze...he does not grade students fairly. I got all A's on my test, and didn't get A's on my papers and weekly discussion boards. Consider another teacher!
The class was so difficult, and he never was able to clarify what he meant on the assignments. On both exams the average was around 70%.
I am in his James Bond class and have to say, it has absolutely no historical relevance to anything, unless you are really into Trivial Pursuit James Bond Edition, knowing the directors and...well, that's about it. so really, just a bunch of guys that smell like cheetos and mountain dew and who get really excited to be able to say "pussy" in class.
I feel that I learned a lot about how the James Bond novels and films play a role in modern pop culture. I wasn't a huge Bond fan before this class, and have come to respect the cultural significance. I found the research difficult, but that was due to a lack of really good sources.
While it is clear he knows his stuff, he has a tendency to treat students like sub-par intelligent life forms simply because we're students. His arrogance reflects that as James Bond, though I'd rather take a class from a talking muppet than repeat one of his. In my opinion he is unfair when grading and if it's not done exactly his way, it's wrong.
This Teacher has interest in his students as well as the curriculum. Therefore my rating Mr. Ray is at a 4.0. The displays of the remarks given on this website to this teacher would show merit or lack their of to the individuals that are posting as well as their grade point average.
Good teacher, not particularly hard, but kind of a jackass when it comes to file types for his online class. He refuses to accept .docx format, and often has difficulty opening files of other types.
He knows a LOT about James Bond. It's a fun class but not terribly applicable, though you will definitely come out of it a more interesting person, which is arguably more important anyway.
My favorite teacher so far at EDCC! He is very smart and very passionate about what he teaches. Not too much homework, and he gives you really thorough study guides for tests. No real down side to his class...I definitely recommend it.
He is a great teacher. His lectures are the best I've had so far. He is truly passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He is very helpful and a down right great guy. I recommend taking this class 100%; he is really one of the great teachers out there.
I took Prof. Ray online for Civil War history and loved the class. It was SUPER easy and he was very clear on what he expected. The tests were easy and questions were straight from the text book.
Eric is a great teacher! He knows material very well and if you take notes in class youll easily 4.0 the class. He is very easy, pretty much tells you whats on the test before hand!
HUMOROUS AND WILLING TO HELP STUDENTS! HIS EXAMS ARE REALLY EASY! MOST OF THE QUESTIONS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICES AND YOU DONT NEED TO WRITE ANY PAPERS!
I took 2 classes from Erik and he is one of my favorite profs. He is very interesting and really knows his stuff. He is also very open to students ideas and views and encourages people to really think about Hist. I got to have some amazing conversations with him during office hours and took away a lot of knowledge from these classes.
James Bond class was very fun, read and watched Bond as curriculum. As a Bond virgin, it gave me a great appreciation for the subject. The teacher was fair in grading, I know I could have done better, but it being online sometimes I lost track of time. Not a hard class, just needs effort to pass with flying colours.
Online class is HARD! 5 quizzes, one every 2 weeks on 2-3 chapters (each chpt is about 20 pgs). THEY'RE SUPER SPECIFIC BUT LOTS OF MATERIAL! Use his study "guides" (a list of topics on the quiz). Quizzes are closed book but cheating prob won't help you bc there's only 30mn per quiz. Know dates, people&random stuff that doesn't seem important
I had taken Erik's online class during the Summer and felt it was a lot of work in a short amount of time. I just finished taking US 148 with him in person and loved his teaching style. No papers, unless it's for extra credit and he's very clear about what will be on the exam. He's one of my favorite teachers at Edmonds.
Minimally difficult class, just read the text and take the tests. He give study guides so you know exactly what to focus on.There is also extra credit available. Highly recommended!
I took his HIST147 online. U need to read the book carefully in order to prepare for the quiz. Discussion board assignment is easy. As long as you read the book and wirte something on it, you get full points for discussion. You will learn a lot from it. But it's not easy to get 4.0. He requires you to work hard. But the class is fun.
Great teacher! Very well with explaining things. He made the course very interesting because he knows the material so well. One of my favorite teachers at Edmonds CC.
The class was pretty hard for me since, first of all, I do not like history. Secondly, there is kind of a lot of reading to do. I had an incident that technically caused me to fail one of the quizzes, but I emailed him and explained sincerely what happened. He believed me and did not penalize the quiz which is awesome. He is very understanding!
I took AP U.S. History in High school, and felt that this online course was a piece of cake. Discussion board every week, for homework. Quizzes are given each two weeks composed of 20 questions out of 30 min. Just prepare the quiz by studying through Mcgraw Hill's example multiple questions that you can find on google. Easy A.
He posts all of his lecture overheads online and the only things that affect our grades are online discussion posts and the tests. Going to class is really helpful if you are confused but is definitely not required. I will be taking his next course and the one after that as well. He is a great teacher and I love his teaching style.
I've never been a history fan but I LOVED his African-American history class. He prepares you for the exams well as long as you're willing to accept it.
Very easy class but super boring if you don't like history. He just lectures for hours with no breaks.
He is the worst instructor that I have ever had!!!! He cares less about his students, his course was extremely hard! I dont like history, but he mad me hate it even more! he gives only 30 min for the 25 question quiz. I couldn't even answer all the questions, i had to guess on half of them. And he didn't care at all!! BTW im a 3.5 student!
Professor Ray was probably one of the most interesting professors I've ever had. At times he could be hilarious, but most of the time the class was really boring. He lectured for 1 12 hours every class, no breaks. It got tiring at times. Gave out "Crib sheets" which outlined everything needed for tests. Never used the books required. Easy!
I took African-American History. This class overall was a pretty good. Erik is a nice teacher definitely wants all his students to succeed. I recommend taking his class. He always has a study guide for all his exams, which is helpful. Make sure you do the HW (online discussions) because that's like half of the grade. Also he provides extra credit.
I took the online class so it was fairly easy as long as you have the textbooks. Easiest A I've ever gotten. All you do is participate in discussions every week (3 responses+1 post) and a quiz every other week. But again, it is an ONLINE class at HOME. WHERE NOBODY MONITORS YOU. Just use the textbook and you'll be fine.
He's just so good at teaching, it ridiculous! He tosses some humor and interesting stories in with the class material, his exams for my class were multiple choice and short answer, so they were pretty easy, and we only had one or two papers. I would definitely take another class with him if given the option to.
Very organized for online course, very routinely. Read a chapter every week, post to the discussion boards and watch a documentary weekly. 60pt quizzes every other week, no final. I ended up not reading after the first couple weeks, just participate and study for 20 minutes right before the quizzes. Due dates were always clear and consistent.
I have taken two of Erik's classes so far and plan on taking another. He gives clear instruction and even gives you a worksheet that let's you know everything on the test in advance. Even if you haven't payed attention up until he gives you this worksheet, as long as you study those portions you will get a good grade. Easy A.
Erik is a great teacher and this course is a great option for history. Your grade in the class depends on participation, but getting an A is easy. In terms of grading, the tests are very easy to study for. There are only two of them as well. Additionally, there was one essay. Aside from that, the weekly course load was an easy online forum post.
This is my 2nd time taking Instructor Ray's class, very easy A if you just do the work. Weekly module with discussion board and a video to watch and a chapter or 2 to read (I survived without much reading). Quizzes every 2 weeks directly from the book.
SO grateful for a teacher who is on your side and wants to see u succeed rather than fail. He was always there before and after class to help and made it easy to contact him for any help. Gives extra credit! Gives u a crib sheet with everything that's on the test! best teacher at edcc. Will def take a class from them again.
(online class) I'll start by saying if you don't like homework or reading DO NOT take his class, there is a lot. If your a student that doesn't plan to do homework you will fail. Responses to the reading and videos are simple, he is very clear on assignments and due dates, but also VERY strict on them. Overall not bad, but has a lot of work.
He's clear in his policy and rubric and what he expects of his students which isn't much. Make sure you read the weekly chapter in the textbook and turn in your assignments on time. If you miss a quiz, you get one retake towards the end of the quarter. He's fair and responsive. Do the work and you shouldn't have any trouble passing.
Erik is a really good teacher. He really cares about the subject, which makes his teaching that much better. He's a funny guy. His study guides and crib sheets really help to study for the tests (only 2 plus the final). Do all the weekly discussions and posts for reading; the points really add up. He offers extra credit , so do it, it helps you.
Will post long videos and movies (sometimes 2+ hours) as homework. There will be weekly discussions and a lot of reading. Overall an easy grader though. Just a lot of work.
Erik was a great teacher! I had him for HIST105 also, and is the reason why I took 106! I learned so much, even through it was online. His assignments are clearly marked in his syllabus, and he does not ask too much of you. Make sure you participate in the discussions! Those points add up. Overall great class, and am looking forward to taking 104 this fall.
I'm taking his class right now, and honestly it's a very easy class. For the class period, all he does is lecture. They are very simple to understand, and the info stick with you. If you missed class, he posts all of his class notes to Canvas. His Crib Sheets are very easy to follow, and help a lot with studying. Barely any homework in his class.
This entire class was relatively easy to pass. All that was due every week was a couple discussion boards, and then there were a couple quizzes all throughout the quarter. So long as you write the required number of paragraphs in the discussion board, you'll get full credit.
Really enjoyed his class. I took American history as a running start student and I no trouble in this class. It is very test heavy considering all the homework is only 1/3 of your grade. Disliked going to the events because I am in high school and I don't have too much time. Overall though, great class and great teacher. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK!!!!!!
Super easy class! All the homework was weekly discussions with two replies and a quiz every other week. It's hard not to pass his class. Read a section of that weeks chapter, and initiate it in your discussion. I never stressed about this class, if you can take him, please do!
I took this class online, and it was pretty easy. There are two discussions due each week based on the readings. There are also 5 quizzes throughout the quarter, and that's it. Erik seemed like a nice professor and graded assignments fairly quickly. If you do your discussion posts, post your responses, and read the books, you will get an A.
I took him over the summer as an online class. You had two assignments due a week and they take time. These assignments are from the book but also from watching videos. I really liked the material covered since you can input your opinion on any assignment. Accepts no late work and can't miss a quiz or test. Take him!
Two Online discussions every week. If you miss class often this is a good class because the notes for lectures are online. He posts a crib sheet online a week before the midterm and final exam. If you do the online discussions and use notes and the crib sheet to study for the test you will pass. Class is just lectures and films. Extra credit paper.
One of my favorite teachers at Edmonds! Erik is really passionate about teaching african american history, and does it in a way that reaches students and makes you want to learn. Im not very good at history in general, but Erik tells you exactly what you need to study to get an A on the tests and midterm in a way that makes it easy to learn.
Erik is one of the best professors I have had. I took his hist105 class and enjoyed it so much that I am taking his hist106 class right now. He cares about the subject he is teaching. He actually teaches instead of reading from a book.
Erik is easily the most frustrating history professor I've ever had. He assigns history channel movies as part of the curriculum, takes forever to respond to emails, and when he does respond he's incredibly rude. When I informed him that one of his modules wasn't online (important for an online only course) he responded initially then ignored me.
While he may have been relatively engaging in class, the course material itself makes little sense. Huge swaths of America's formative years get breezed over both in class and in the textbook. On top of that his quizzes focus on weirdly specific details that don't really have much importance in history.
Mr. Ray is a great professor and highly reccomend.
Online: Easy A. Read the textbook, take his quizzes, and do the discussion work and you'll pass with flying colors. When he messed up on posting things he gave us more time. This class is all busy work so if you do it you'll be fine. Mostly strict on deadlines so just plan ahead. There were no tests or finals in this class so that was nice.
I took his Online history class which I loved. He grades within two weeks of the submission and is very open to changing questions on quizzes if you tell him the information in the textbook didn't match his answer. He is a good communicator and will usually get back to you within 12 hours of your email. The only con is that you have to read a lot.
I took his AA History class and it was incredibly easy. Lots of textbook reading though, and some long videos to watch. But if you do the reading and keep up with the DQ's you should have no problem acing this class. I also learned a lot and am glad I took it.
I loved Erik. Best and one of the most helpful classes I have ever taken. His assignments were somewhat easy if you did them and I feel like he provided a lot of help when needed. And his assignments were very clear
He expects you to take notes traditionally during his lectures. Only 2 discussions per week and 2 test throughout the quarter. He even gives you crib sheets before each tests. Pretty easy and managable class.
Mr. Ray was a great teacher to have for an online class. He made assignments clear on what to do and what was expected. There were two discussion a week and a few quizzes, as well as some textbook reading. I really enjoyed this class because of how simple and easy it was, and he provided texts that were interesting to read and werent boring.
Easiest class ever. Just get the Howard-Pitney book and not the other one. Two discussions per week but they take only take a couple of hours to read/watch and finish. He gives a study guide before every quiz so finish that and you'll be good to go. There's a quiz every 2-3 weeks. The class itself was really interesting.
The class wasn't hard just read the textbook and watch the videos and you will pass .
Great lectures, and there was only two discussion per week and it was really easy. Loved the class, I really felt like I learned a lot. No exceptions though, if you miss one of the discussions you can't make it up.
I wasn't particularly interested in the subject at hand but took it for a diversity credit. The class was easy and you shouldn't have an issue getting a 4.0 in the class. There was three tests and they all weren't very difficult. I wouldn't consider it a super interesting class IMO but others could disagree. Not allot of hw other than 2 books.
Only 2 exams per quarter and they are extremely easy.
I took Prof. Ray for my first class as a Running Start student in the program. His class woke me up to how college is ran and the strictness of it. The only reason why I got the grade I did and not higher is because I procrastinated and turned in work late. The work isn't too bad. Other than that, this class was easy and simple.
Prof Ray is a great prof. He only grades on 2 things: discussions (2 weekly, 3 replies each), and quizzes (4 throughout the qtr) If he makes a mistake, he fixes it and EVERYONE'S GRADE WAS BOOSTED 5 POINTS. The books are gen interesting and were very great topics that are hardly covered, he has a true passion for AA history and I highly recommend!!
Super interesting class and it is very clear that he is so passionate about what he teaches. Lectures are long but i enjoyed them and they tend to go by fast. 2 Discussion posts per day, a quiz per week, and 2 Exams with very helpful study guides.
This is by far the best teacher I've had so far. His work is easy, you do one discussion post a week with a total of 4 responses and then if I remember correctly, he had like 4 quizzes which were super easy if you just read the books and view the study guide. If you want an easy A this is the class to take.
This class is pretty easy, and there is not much work. I took it for my junior year class in high school, Running Start. All there are are weekly discussions and his own presentations that you can read in your own time. There are only 4 unit tests, which are pretty easy because he gives you study guides similar to answers to the real test.
Professor Ray's HIST106 class is a breeze. The workload is light - just a few discussions and quizzes based on the readings. Using Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helps with exam prep. Overall, an easy A if you stay on top of the work.
One of the best professors I have ever had if not the best. Entertaining class, you can tell professor Ray truly care about what he is teaching. As long as you show up and take notes you are set.
One discussion per week, a quiz every other week (4 quizzes total). Overall, easy class and the teacher is very kind and respectful. I recommend this class to everyone :)
This professor was awesome. Light work load, I took it during the summer online and would recommend anyone to take this class. Super simple class, 1 discussion a week and 3 quizzes in total. The study guide he gives out is similar to the quizzes. No finals or midterms or any other assignments. The readings are like 1 chapter a week.
pretty good, 3 quizzes with weekly discussion posts. Discussions are somewhat long however, but takes me about an hour and a half max. Only reason why I wouldn't give a 5/5 is because it takes the dude forever to grade an assignment, but understandable given that it is a summer quarter class and he prob has other classes to grade as well.
Make sure you read the textbook and you'll be fine, just make aure your writing is good and follows his criteria. Tests were fairly easy as long as you knew he textbook and the content.
Good professor, took online course. Honestly not too bad, almost the perfect online professor, but he literally graded basically nothing until the last week. That is the only reason I can't give a 5/5. other than that grading is pretty lenient, and overall had a good experience
Tried to contact via email multiple times about technical problems on my end with assignments and he only responded to one message, basically saying it wasn't his problem that an assignment wasn't showing up on my end. Had this problem in other classes and they were much more communicative.
I struggled a lot in this class and finally got up to a 70%, then he went back and took back 80 points on one of my tests because I "made up a test", so because of that I then got a zero. Which I literally never missed or made up a test I submitted them all on time, so now I'm failing.
