Nice guy outside the classroom, but his lectures are extremely tedious (reads completely off the PowerPoint slides) & lacks in helping students out
Horrible professor. Has his assistants rip the book onto Powerpoint slides. Reads off Powerpoint. Not helpful at office hours. Hard to understand and makes tests WAY too hard.
Has no enthusiasm for teaching, is unwilling to help students, lectures too fast off powerpoints ripped from the book without elaborating or providing any varying perspectives. Reads off pre-prepared examples that are confusing without explaing. Tests are incredibly difficult. Terrible professor.
It's useless to go to lectures, because you will end up rereading the textbook anyways. He goes through his lectures way to fast. During a lecture you will hear "Wait, go back!" multiple times a lecture. I learned more chemistry from my high school history sub than Erik Ruggles.
Great instructor. Answers all my questions during office hours. Makes special arrangements if I cannot make them. Lectures from power points but follows textbook exactly, helps to read before lecture. Poor comments must be from students not doing well in his course and not using his office hours. He is extremely helpful on a one on one basis.
Great professor. Awesome during his office hours. Lectures straight from the textbook. Posts all his lecture notes online. Sometimes goes a little fast in lecture but all notes are online so not a worry. Gives us practice exams. Does problem review session before exam. Goes above and beyond my other profs.
He tries to teach the material. However, you may do all of the practice problems in the book, all of the practice exams, understand everything in lecture, and then fail the exam. That is where he goes wrong; impossible exams. His office hours are helpful but good luck on the exams.
He teaches too fast
his test suck... a lot. avoid class if possible
He's a great guy outside of the classroom, and now that he doesn't use so many power points in his lectures he's a pretty good teacher. He is EXTREMELY helpful in his office hours, and even will meet with you at a different time if you can't make his hours. He had a rough start, but it is his first year teaching here and now it's MUCH better.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Can't teach a thing. Makes tests impossible. Avoid him at all costs.
The good thing about Ruggles is that he is new and is developing his teaching styles. The bad thing about Ruggles is that he is new and is developing his teaching styles. Its a very difficult class and its made harder by someone who is not used to teaching. He's a really nice guy but be prepared to work (hours) if you want to do well in the class
Erik Ruggles is a good teacher. Alot of the comments here are from people who, after a month of his class dropped. He is new this year, and admittedly started out rocky. HOWEVER. After seeing a poor overall exam grade, Ruggles changed his teaching style, and asked for student input on what would work well for them.
Professor Ruggles is an excellent teacher. If you are lazy, perhaps like many of those who have left negative reviews, and do not want to put in hard work to learn a difficult subject, do not take his class. If you want to learn chemistry from an articulate and helpful professor, then take his class.
HARD CLASS! Not a very good professor, cannot teach well, but a very nice person.
Decent Professor, he no longer uses powerpoints. It's a little hard to read his writing on the board sometimes. Very responsive to students, and does some cool demos too.
I enjoy chemistry and I work really hard but this teacher is AWFUL! He has no clue what he's talking about. I looked up answers in the book for an exam of his and the answer key he gave out was wrong, he said that the book was wrong??? He's a bad teacher, he doesn't care, you can't read his writing, he doesn't know anything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Ruggles is absolutely terrible. I have consulted several chemistry professors regarding test questions who agree that his answers are wrong, yet he will not return the points. He contradicts himself constantly, and I have begun to sincerely doubt whether he understands the material he teaches at all. Avoid this terrible teacher at all costs!!!
Horrible teacher...tests are just down right brutal. I hope to never have to take a class with this guy again
After having Ruggs for almost 2 semesters now, I have learned to adapt to his teaching style and know that I need to put in the extra effort (textbook problems, practice exams) in order to pass. One on one he is very good at explaining concepts, going through problems step-by-step, and gives you information about exams you would otherwise not know.
Ruggles teaching by going over Sharp's notes. He then gives Sharp's practice tests to prepare for his exams. But his exams are nothing like sharp's. He includes problems on the tests that are nothing like what we've ever seen before. No one does good, he then tells the TAs to be very lenient on the grading. Then tells us a ton of people got 90s.
I have had Ruggles for chem 031 and 032 and at the end of my second semester I can't say that I am done with the class. It's more like the class is done with me. By far the HARDEST class you will ever take. Honestly Ruggles gives the hardest tests and uses a different teachers practice exams and notes. Horrible teaching and horrible class.
Extremely difficult class, probably due to the need to 'weed-out' pre-med students, combined with Ruggles' lack of experience teaching. Make sure to read the book, and do all examples, and you should be fairly well prepared for the insanely difficult exams.
I like Ruggles. He's a nice guy. But the truth is, that in order for the majority of students to understand chemistry, the prof. has to be passionate, or those students need to be OBSESSED/gifted. I withdrew because i wasn't able to dedicate more than 2 hrs a night to chem. His tests are near impossible, and some questions are totally random.
WAY TO FAST! Expects you to know to much to fast. Exams are near impossible. The University of Vermont should really consider doing something about him. I used to love chem, I now hate it.
I thought I was prepared for the test, we got the first test and there was a problem on it we NEVER went over. The next day in class he said it was suppose to be a challenge for us. What kind of teacher gives you a test with a question they never went over. A prof should test on how well you know the material they went over, not if your a genius.
Difficult to understand. Goes way to fast and how are we expected to take notes and retain the information if we can't read his hand writing?
Please avoid this class if possible. His test are unbelievably hard and he does not explain the material well. He goes to fast and does not explain what he is doing and is not very helpful when you go outside of class for help. If you have him think about Summer University! Class is very difficult
This comment is here to help prevent other from suffering in deep deep agony. DO NOT take a class with him. VERY HARD, tests are impssoble to pass and the review exams he gives you are nothing nothing like the actual exam. Don't waste your time with him. He is not helpful what so ever.
He's not that bad. Exams are a little tricky. If you know the material well, you'll be able to get through 80-100% of the exam depending on how he makes them. Some do require some good math knowledge. I'm not a math/science person at all and I have yet to get below a B on his exams. Just study a lot and go to his office hours and you're fine.
His exam's are a lot harder than the practice exams he gives you and he tends to fly through the material so it's hard to keep up. He's not THAT bad of a teacher, but I strongly suggesting not taking the class with him if you can help it; you can definitely get a better grade with another prof
He's really not that hard, despite what some people here are saying. He's an alright lecturer, sometimes unclear, but generally understandable. People who say his exams are too hard don't study at all, as long as you devote a couple hours to it, you'll get a good grade. If you're having trouble definitely go to office hours. so helpful.
I took chem 31 and 32 with Ruggles. He is a pretty tricky teacher but he definitely gives you a lot of resources to help you with the classes. I chose to take him the second semester because I knew how he worked. Very reasonable in giving points back on the tests and will often do so if you go to office hours. Rating him poorly due to a bad grade i
As most of the comments say, his tests are what really make him such a bad professor. His "practice tests" are basically worthless as the real tests are 10x harder. He doesn't teach you what he expects you to know, he expects you to learn on your own what he expects you to know meaning he's practically worthless. NO ENTHUSIASM FOR TEACHING.
Excellent proff. People rate him poorly because they did not do well, probably because they did insufficient work- it's a hard class! Very clear, organized, and helpful proff. Always available for extra help. Class is well paced and lecture is very helpful to clarify concepts. To get A takes a lot of work, as it probably should be.
My main problem with Ruggles is not his incomprehensible lectures, but the fact that he refuses to consider curves, claiming 'the curves are in the grades'. In fact, the grade curve is only around 3 points, not nearly enough to compensate for the killer exams. Often, the only people who do well on his exams took AP Chem in high school.
He was an incredibly difficult professor. His teaching styles were terrible.
Terrible professor; extremely hard, grade does not reflect effort
I don't mind his teaching style, and his use of examples in class are helpful, but his tests are difficult to say the least. I wish he would consider adding a curve because it is definitely going to hurt my GPA :(
Awesome teacher considering it is only his second year teaching. This is not to say his teaching is sub-par. Of course his practice tests are going to be much harder than the actual tests. He only has one of them for you to go from (next year you'll have 2)! DO NOT skip lectures. Study from practice test-get a C. Study from book-sky's the limit.
Ruggles is a good professor, if you take initiative and go into his office hours he will help you. And at the end of the year the class average is a C,which is a normal average for any hard level college class. Chemistry is hard to learn, because everyone isn't getting Bs and As doesn't mean Ruggles is awful.
Very difficult. Not a bad teacher, but he makes a lot of mistakes and his tests are very difficult.
Gen Chem is hard but prof. Ruggles makes so that if you try, do the problems from the book, do the practice exams, go to review sessions and office hours and he'll reward your efforts.
Ruggles was easy to understand in lecture even though he made mistakes. His exams were difficult. When he says "do the practice problems in your textbook" he really means it. Do all of those plus some and you will be fine!
I had this professor for both CHEM 31 and 32. During my first semester i couldn't stand him, based on the fact that chemistry in high school was so much easier than college. But In my openion, as i started to adjust to chem as a subject Ruggles' class started to seem easy. However you absolutly have to work hard. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS!!
This class is very is quite unpleasant, don't take it if you don't have to!
Ruggles will test you on material that he hasn't even taught yet, and is a really rough grader. You can understand all the material and still fail a test. Don't take the class! Don't!
Ruggles is not as bad people say. His tests are a little difficult and the other profs are easier from what I hear, but his lectures and clear, he is well organized and hes a nice guy. If you have any sort of chemistry background, you have no excuse not to do well. The people giving him bad ratings are just frustrated at their test averages.
Ruggles is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Yes, his tests are difficult but he is always willing to help in anyway possible. Explains things very well. He is a good guy and I enjoyed his lectures. He expects you know how to do the problems inside and out
He's clear, tells you what he expects. Hardest Chemistry professor, but also probably the most knowledgeable. He IS a good teacher, but likes to challenge his students. Tests are hard, but doable. He tells you outright if you get an A in his course it would be QUITE the achievement. I like the guy. Oh also he is loud, which keeps me awake
Ruggles is a pretty decent guy, and I will say that he's a damn good teacher. But his exams will kill your hopes and dreams, and you need to be prepared for that.
He tests you on material that he hasn't even taught in class. His review sessions are a waste of time considering the answers to the prac. problems aren't even in the manual. Oh and his exams will make you want cry yourself to sleep at night or strangle him, either or. Try your hardest to get a different professor, your gpa will thank you.
I know a lot of people didn't like him cause his exams were hard, but he's a really good professor and he has crazy almost all the time office hours to help students. That class made me love chemistry again.
I had Ruggles for both Chem 31 & 32. I didn't think I liked him at first, but then CHOSE to take Chem 32 with him instead of Sharp. Exams are long, but fair. His classes are extremely helpful. He writes excellent notes. He gives you all the tools to succeed, but is still challenging. Pay attention in class, take good notes, and you'll do fine.
Take good notes and go to every class or you will not pass the class. He doesn't assign any homework and expects you to do it yourself. Do yourself and your GPA a favor and study...a lot. His tests are very hard, almost impossible and will make you want to go on a rampage. The key to this class studying and going to his office hours.
Ruggles is terrible. Do not take him if you can help it! The lectures are fine, but the exams are an absolute NIGHTMARE and require more intense critical thinking than actual chemistry knowledge. You're graded solely on 4 exams and one final exam. It's the worst.
This is a class that you HAVE to study for. Ruggles doesn't assign HW, but does give problems that he thinks are good practice to prepare for exams. The lectures are pretty interesting, but the exams are HELL. I think he is fair. However, if you don't do the practice problems and don't take the practice exams then don't expect a good grade.
Mr. Ruggles has great demonstrations and keeps class interesting. This class is very difficult. 40% of students drop out, withdraw, or fail. only 13% of kids get an A. My best advise is to take advantage of all the resources. There are tutors in COOK all day long, study sessions on tuesday nights, and ruggles office hours.
Ruggles is a very friendly and smart professor. He makes class fairly interesting and uses demonstrations. His tests are very difficult and it is a necessity to do the suggested problems or you will not do well.
Ruggle's class isn't easy, but he gives you all of the tools to succeed. If you use the resources he provides, you will do fine. I went into this class expecting it to awful, but it hasn't been. If I didn't do well, it had nothing to do with him, it was because I didn't study enough.
The class is difficult only if you do not study. The exams are challenging, but fair if you do the practice problems and exams that Ruggles suggests. Ruggles really makes an effort to answer questions and provide support, and if you study the way he suggests, you will do fine.
GREAT lectures but pretty hard exams. This year the final exam ruined my almost guaranteed A. Just go to class and do the practice exams and you'll be fine.
Great professor, but really hard exams. If you're having trouble, go see him. He's very helpful! The book is a MUST for this class!
Not at all a horrible class. Go to office hours and do the work he assigns. Best chemistry lecturer available.
If you utilize the tools he give you, this is not a bad class at all. Ruggles is a superb lecturer and a super nice guy. His tests are challenging but doable. Don't let the other comments scare you too much, I loved his class and am taking him again next semester!
Ruggles is a great lecturer, he does great demos, music before class, and is extremely clear. His lectures make the material seem easy but when you go to the homework or the tests it's almost foreign. He gives lots of materials to utilize but expect stressful tests that are definitely not always doable.
Great Professor. Exams are generally tough, but if you put in adequate effort, success is very feasible. I would recommend Ruggles to anyone interested in chemistry.
WORST CLASS EVER.
Let me start and say that I was afraid of chemistry before I started uvm. I never got higher than a C+ (except final) in high school. Repeating chemistry was easy for but also the fact that most exams are plug n chug. The hardest part is the wording of the problem. This class is more about analysis than chem. All you need is practice and your good
Really good lecturer. It's a class where you need to do the homework and practice over and over and over. That's all. Can't blow off the work.
I enjoy learning most topics, but this man took all the fun out of learning for me. Not only was he irresponsibly late to multiple appointments, but his tests are the more complicated than the information he teaches you how to solve. He posts quizes on FRIDAY night due saturday morning, so watch out for that.
Ruggles is a very clear lecturer but his exams are tough. They cover all the material from the section as well as some tougher questions that make you apply concepts to unfamiliar problems. You will need to do a lot of work to do well in his class! My advice: GO TO LECTURE, and read the relevant section BEFOREHAND. These and hard work will pay off.
tells you practice tests and book problems are just like the test questions... they aren't at all.
Encourages students to come to office hours, but when I went he was incredibly meanrude.
Ruggles is an extremely tough chem prof. He is an okay lecturer, but if you approach him with questions he will say "should have studied harder" or "pay more attention". His exams are insane. Sometimes he will test you on concepts that he only briefly mentioned and then will say "well, it was in the textbook" or "I spent plenty of time on it".
This class is like ripping a band-aid off, but it lasts for 3 excruciatingly long months. Ruggles cannot teach, and his exams are extremely difficult. I would rather eat paper all semester.
I came into intro to chemistry with a genuine interest in chemistry. I did very well in high school chemistry and I was excited to learn some advanced topics. Ruggles ruined it for me. His exams are the worst... extremely hard. He is unengaging and refuses to help you. He even blames you if you don't know something. Exams are way too difficult.
Ruggles cannot lecture. His lectures are confusing. The worst part of the class though are the exams. First off, he's not clear on what will be covered on the exams. Secondly, the actual questions are much harder than the practice problems. To be quite frank I'm astonished that UVM would hire ruggles. He's nice in lecture, but very mean outside.
I went to office hours a few times for advice on how to get my grades up and he simply told me to do my homework, which I do all the time. The lectures are confusing and the practice questions are much easier than the actual exams. The exams are extremely hard and the practice exams online are helpful but then the actual exam is usually much harder
Helpful? Um no... Dismisses you when you ask for help. Isn't clear in lectures. Tests are way too hard (the questions are nothing like the practice problems). He is the worst professor I have had. Ever. Do not take his lecture. No other lecturers available? Take the class another semester.
This class is the reason I'm not a science major anymore. Unbelievably hard, I nearly failed, went to tutoring session after tutoring session and studied all the time, pulled a D+. WORST experience of my life, I spent so much time trying to pass it that the best grade I got that semester was a b- because of how much time I spent trying to pass chem
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL experience! Do not take chemistry with Erik Ruggles. His exams are insanely difficult (and he tells you that if you can do the homework you can ace the exams... nope). It is so difficult and he is of little help. This class caused me a significant amount of emotional pain and ruined my GPA. I do well in all of my other classes.
Very textbook heavy class. Ruggles' lectures are dull and hard to follow. He doesn't help when you ask for it. His exams are too difficult and much harder than previous years. He is dismissive when you ask for help. There was rampant cheating in the first exam and TAs completely ignored it. I have never had a worse academic experience.
Ruggles is a great lecturer but his tests are definitely difficult. We had a recitation period that was not helpful at all where we took quizzes. (hopefully he doesnt do that again because that hurts your grade more than it helps). Do the practice problems he gives you for "homework", keep up and you'll do fine. Struggles with Ruggles is real.
Ruggles is a good lecturer - he makes chemistry exciting to learn, and I don't have any particular interest in chemistry. His tests are very difficult, but if you do the homework and carefully take the practice tests and tests from previous years, you should be good. Definitely go to all classes, though. Sometimes test questions are poorly worded.
Dr. Ruggles is a great professor. He has awesome lectures full of explosions! Plus he makes chemistry exciting and interesting and is a great person. His tests are difficult but if you practice the material and go to see Ruggles to ask questions, you'll do just fine.
Very difficult class in general made tolerable by his fun personality.
Ruggles is the worst teacher I ever had!!! His test are hard even when you do the homework. He is not helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE CHEM WITH RUGGLES!!!!!!
By far the best chemistry professor you could hope to have. Yes, the material is hard! He does his best to make it clear during lecture and provides ample opportunity for practice and help outside of class. Most of the exam questions come directly from the textbook homework. Lectures with Ruggles were more fun than I thought chemistry could be.
I took Ruggles' Chem 31 and 32 classes my freshman year and they were the hardest classes I have ever taken. I spent hours in the library studying and Barely made it out with a B. But he's one of the most brilliant professors at the school and is willing to help with almost any problem, as long as you make the effort to go to him.
Struggles with Ruggles... Homework is easy, labs are fun and easy. Exams are WAY MORE TOUGH THAN NEEDED. People taking the same class, but with a different professor, are given much easier exams. Be ready to study like crazy, and then only get a 50 on your exams.
He's not that hard like everyone said "Struggles with Ruggles". If you come to his recitations and take notes, you'll be just fine. Practice things alot from textbook. Texbook is da best friend.
His lectures are informational and helpful. His tests are extremely difficult if you haven't taken chemistry before.
Show up to lectures and do the homework this class isn't that bad. The test are a little tough but if you have a understanding of the basic concepts and know how to apply them you can do well. They are mostly tough because they are long (a little intimidating). He is happy to help students and takes all test questions straight from the text book.
So. Ruggles. Best teacher I've had my freshman year. Chem 31 and 32 were difficult, but if you do the homework and actually study and are taking the class because you are actually interested in science then getting an A is very easy. Tests are tough but very fair, as long as you put the work in.
Great professor, has difficult tests but if you listen to him in class and go over the textbook problems, then you will have no trouble. He obviously knows what he is talking about and offers plenty of help outside of class. If you want to learn the material, Ruggles is your guy.
Honestly I think he's fantasic. I'm good at math so I didn't find his class very hard at all. He's a great lecturer and overall very nice guy. Take his class.
Ruggles is a great guy, his lectures are really good and clear and he does a great job in class. He doesn't grade homework or have you turn it in, but its there and you should do it. His tests are really hard, that's just fact, but doable if you study and pay attention.
Amazing teacher, but hard grader
His class is notoriously difficult, but is much more manageable than rumor has made it out to be if you sit down and do the work. He is an excellent professor.
they dont call it struggles with ruggles for nothing. get ready to be doing chem 24/7 in order to get a decent grade. he is a very unforgiving and unsympathetic man, so if you have any problems during the semester, you can count on him not being easy to work with
He is very helpful outside of lecture and has a lot of office hours. DO THE 'HOMEWORK' HE PUTS ON BLACKBOARD. The stuff in the textbook are similar to exams. Always 1-2 challenging questions on exams - be prepared.
The term "Struggles with Ruggles," is definitely a real thing. CHEM032 is hard and requires a lot of work. DO the homework problems and his practice exams, this will help extremely and you can not succeed without doing them. He is a tough professor but funny and cares about his students.
Great professor. For Chem031/032, don't bother with the textbook reading, do the actual problems.
Get to know him well and it will make the class more bearable. Attend office hours regularly because although his tests suck he gives good advice.
great teacher, pay attention in class and do the practice problems, that's what his tests are based on. attend office hours if you're confused on something, he's really good at explaining. The class is hard but if you do the homework and go to office hours you should be good! also take the ACS for extra credit!
Struggles with Ruggles is all I heard, but he has been the best lecturer I have ever had. Listen to him, don't fall asleep. He explains everything so well. If you don't do well on his exams then just bring them in to him to go over, he throws points back at you it's unreal. He cares and he just wants to see that you do too. Give him a chance
Honestly, the best teacher and lecture I've ever had. He literally does EVERY problem that's going to be in the test in class, so ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION! He also loves giving points back to students if they go to his office hours. Never once used the textbook though, it's unnecessary
This is the hardest class I've taken so far. I've never studied so much to earn 50's on exams. I went to his office with questions about the last exam and he was very intimidating and unwilling to give me partial credit, he seems nicer in class than he is one-on-one. I would definitely recommend dropping this and taking it with a different prof.
Ruggles is a very tough teacher, and you will not do well unless you are willing to put in the work. He gives you the exact questions that will be on the exams, along with multiple practice problems that solidify your grasp of a topic. This is the hardest class I have ever taken, but my interest in chemistry increased after taking this class.
Of all your Chem 31 options, Ruggles easily gives the hardest exams, but he also gives the best, humor-infused lectures (though that won't really make up for your grade). He takes pride in a C being average for his class (struggles with Ruggles is definitely a thing), but he's also very willing to walk through any problems during office hours.
The man is very passionate about teaching chemistry! He wants you to succeed! I loved the class!
Ruggles is a very good lecturer but his tests are way harder than they should be given what was covered in lecture. You have to show up to lecture if you want to pass. He also is rude to students occasionally when they ask for help. Certain times he embarrassed students in front of 200 students in lecture. Hard to ask him questions and trust him.
Ruggles' exams are difficult, however, he really knows his stuff and gives you everything you need to do well on exams. He is overall a great lecturer, available readily for office hours and will answer your questions if you make them know. I recommend reading a bit of the textbook to supplement the lectures and practicing old exam questions.
Ruggles is a really great professor! Chemistry is a hard subject in general, but his lectures are as clear and straightforward as possible. He gives his students everything they need in order to succeed, it is their responsibility to do the practice problems and study. He is very approachable and his office hours help a lot!!
Professor Ruggles is a good lecturer who really helps you understand the material. If you're willing to put time and effort into doing the assignments and studying for the exams then you'll do fine in the class. His exams are very fair and the study material really prepares you well if you do it.
Ruggles is clear and concise with his lectures, making them easy to understand even though most students find the material difficult. He's also very funny! Although his tests are pretty hard, he's always available to help and he works hard to help students understand. I've taken two classes with him and would definitely take another.
Ruggles is the best professor I've had so far at UVM. Really clear lectures. Funny dude as well. Very organized and clear grading method. The whole struggles with ruggles thing is too hyped up... if you do some homework and remember the quizzes you will be fine.
"Struggles with Ruggles" is an accurate and well known saying around campus. He's a tough grader, very condescending, and makes you feel stupid if you don't understand something. There's a reason he was on academic probation. The profs for CHEM 031 and 032 at UVM leave something to be desired.
Has an Ego if you don't get the material after he tells you one it is a chore for him to go over it again. Questions are discouraged he has a schedule to stick to. When at office hours he focuses on making you feel small and not helping. He has some really good TAs though so relay on them for help.
Ruggles is an excellent teacher. If you are pursuing a career that will require dexterity in this field, he is without question the man to go to. However, he teaches the first weed-out class for many freshmen. Maybe about a quarter of students who want to become doctors can become them and he knows it is not his job to increase that number.
Ignore the rumors about "struggles with Ruggles!" A full year of gen chem is hard, especially if you're taking it during your first year and you're transitioning into everything else. Ruggles's lectures are engaging, and you can usually rely on them for the material (but use the textbook for problems). He's also great during office hours.
Ruggles is a nice guy and a good lecturer, but the tests are not easy. If you do all of the homework he assigns and study the previous years tests he gives you, you will do fine in the class. He holds a lot of office hours, and as long as you don't go in having not done any work he will throw you points on the tests and help you w questions
GENERAL CHEMISTRY IS HARD, Professor Ruggles does his best teaching it to non-majors (ie, kids who don't really care about chem). I switched my major INTO chemistry after having him as a gen chem lecturer. Yes, the exams are challenging, but are not impossible. With ample office hours, TA office hours and lab time, there isn't really an excuse.
Professor Ruggles is a very difficult professor, but looking back he is one of the best there is. His lectures are very clear-he gives lots of good examples that are on the test. His tests are difficult, but he is open to students coming to his office hours and is very helpful. If you want to learn chem, take Ruggles.
Struggles with Ruggles. His tests are unbelievable hard but his lectures are great. The example problems he does and the homework he gives you does little to prepare you for the difficult test questions. Still, probably the best Chem 31 professor since the bar is so low.
He is a fantastic lecturer, very knowledgeable and able to explain complex topics. Many of the topics that are covered in this class are hard to grasp, such as quantum chemistry and thermodynamics. If you can teach yourself the theory behind these topics, using the textbook, you will be very successful at deciphering the challenging calculations.
Ruggles definitely has the hardest exams out of all the chem 31 professors, but his lectures are the best and his teaching style is to the point. Many kids who had other professors chose to go to his lectures instead of their own.
Professor Ruggles has the best lectures but the hardest tests. Most of his students fail. The class is curved but not enough to get anything beyond a C or a B. If you want to do well in this class you need to fully dedicate yourself all day everyday which is very difficult if you are a engineering major or pre-med. I don't recommend this professor.
Ruggles is a great professor, his lectures are very thorough. Teaches the material so that it is understood. Has a good sense of humor. This being said... his exams are very difficult.
He's a really great professor who makes sure that his students truly understand the material if they are willing to put in the effort. It takes a lot of work but it's an introductory weed-out STEM class, so you should expect that.
Professor Ruggles is very knowledgable and his lectures are really great and in depth. Sometimes the class gets boring, but he tries to keep students engaged. His tests can be sort of hard, but he is there to help.
Professor Ruggles is the way to go for General Chemistry I. He is thorough in his lectures, and he gives you everything you need to excel. If you do the practice exam questions he gives you, understand the labs and read the textbook, you will do very well. He's a fantastic, knowledgeable guy and it really isn't difficult to do well in his class.
Hard grader
Struggles with Ruggles is definitely real in that his exams are very difficult, however, he is extremely accessible to students who need help (ton of office hours, review sessions). He wants you to succeed but WILL make you work hard for it. Dont take gen chem with anybody else or you will not learn the material the way you will w/ Ruggles
He is amazing.
Great professor! Chem 31 and 32 are definitely super challenging classes but if you put the work in you can do well. Ruggle's taught this challenging material well and did his best to prepare students for the difficult exams. I would 100% recommending taking chem 31/32 with him over the other profs here at UVM.
Way better than Chant. Chem 031 & 032 are hard but Ruggles gives you all the resources necessary to succeed if you work for it.
Ruggles is a hard professor but very fair and willing to help. His summer courses are even better than during fall and spring
Ruggles truly is a great professor. His lectures are very focused and organized, making it easy to pick up on the material. He also offers very helpful review sessions the week leading up to each exam, as well as access to previous years' exams, which make test preparation a breeze. Ruggles plays music prior to each lecture, and makes gen chem fun.
This course is extremely hard. I am a conceptual learner, therefore; this class was not for me. He pulls information directly out of the textbook and that is the entire lecture. He doesn't add any background information as for how things work or why they do. His exams are extremely hard and believes that a 70 average on his exams is a great thing.
Ruggles is a great lecturer, but his exams are kinda scary. All the content on the exams is covered in the lectures, so if you go to lectures you'll know what content to expect. However, he makes the difficulty a whole new level for the exams (compared to practice problems).
Professor Ruggles is a great lecturer and is always there to help. His tests are extremely hard and the average is usually around a 70. Homework is optional but if you don't do it then you're basically setting yourself up to fail.
He's really nice and approachable. You've probably heard of struggles with ruggles, and it is a difficult class but Ruggles gives you all of the resources you need to succeed. There are SI sessions, practice problems (optional homework), helpful office hours, and he has two review sessions the week before an exam. The grade you get is up to you.
Ruggles is a very difficult class even for those who have done well in previous science classes. That being said, he gives you every opportunity to succeed and the resources to do so. The tests are daunting as they are often far more complex than the homework. Study the old tests and dont be overly confident going into the class and youll do fine
Ruggles is a nice enough professor and he's available for helping students but this class killed me. I worked so hard and put so much time and effort in and made no progress. His tests are very difficult as he uses all the exceptions and twists things around to be confusing and backwards. If your good at chem this class will probably be not as bad.
Exams are exponentially harder than the homework. Try and utilize all resources you can, and I'm not kidding when I say study this material every day. Also, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE OVER THE SUMMER. It is insanely hard, way worse than the normal semester bc it is condensed and you learn the SAME AMOUNT (nothing is left out). Mental health destroyed
Ruggles may give the toughest exams, but if you put the time in you will learn a lot. Lectures are always helpful and engaging, and he does example problems to make sure everyone understands. Ruggles gave me a lot of headaches throughout the semester, but now I have a really good grasp of chemistry and would take his class again in a heartbeat.
He is fair from the outset and you will learn.
Ruggles is an amazing teacher but a hard grader. You won't learn nearly as much from another teacher. Work hard in this class and you will do good.
He has his reputation as a hard teacher for a reason. On the other hand, he will give you everything that you need to succeed in the class. This class is required by a lot of majors so there are many people who struggle because it is not similar to their other classes and they don't use what he has provided for help
Overall, Ruggles is a nice guy. He knows what he's doing and he's the best lecturer for Chem032. Chem is a difficult subject and Ruggles is known for giving hard exams. However, now the exams have become standardized. This doesn't mean you can slack off though. If you don't push yourself, and utilize your resources you're going to struggle.
THE MAN!!!
Chem 32 with ruggles is an extremely difficult class but still fair. Do the review questions after every lecture and start studying for tests a week before at minimum. That being said, Ruggles is a boss and I've never had so much respect for a professor.
Struggles with Ruggles is REAL PEOPLE. Took CHEM031 and dropped CHEM032 with him because I literally couldn't go through another semester of chemistry. Gen Chem are definitely weeder classes so be prepared to dedicate your entire life to chemistry or change your major where chem isn't a requirement. Ruggles is a good prof just REALLY HARD CONTENT.
If you aren't willing to put in the work, you won't pass. Lectures are all posted online, so attendance is only necessary if you're confused or want to ask questions and see step by step answers. Says that he is approachable, but he really isn't and can be very condescending. Online practice and notes are your best friends in this class!
I struggled a lot in this class but Ruggles is a really nice guy and a great professor overall. His lectures are amazing and he's always willing to help outside of class. The exams are extremely difficult but fair. Study for the exams at least 2 weeks before and be ready to really push yourself if you want to do well in this class.
Dr Ruggles makes chemistry seem much easier than other professors do. He works through every problem step by step during class on an iPad that is seen via projector which he then uploads after every class to review. He gives lots of practice questions and old exams you can practice with. None of it is mandatory. Wish I could have him for every Chem
This guy is just a bad teacher. He likes to explain things step by step instead of teaching the fundamental concepts of chemistry. I had to withdraw from his course b/c I was failing. I then immediately took it again the next semester, with a DIFFERENT PROFESSOR, and got a solid A (94 average). I also got an A in organic chemistry, so it's not me.
Sadly, Professor Ruggles is another example of what some UVM professors do so well: create barriers to success. Even the most studious amongst you will struggle and falter. Near the end of the semester even the TA took pity on us and advised us to complain to the dean. Wait a semester, change your schedule, just DON'T take this class with Ruggles.
gen chem was one of the hardest courses ive ever taken, but it was so worth it. ruggles is a great professor and is always there to help, but its really up to you to do well in the class. go to lectures and do the practice problems! this class teaches you work ethic like no other and is challenging but highly rewarding. good luck!
Dr. Ruggles is an awesome professor. To all the incoming freshman its important to remember that college is a different animal than high school. Chem 032 with Ruggles was awesome. Don't be afraid to ask for help and stop by the office he is so personable and really cares about his students. He'll celebrate and support you as his student !
He thinks hes cool, but he comes off as condescending. Was a bio major for the first month of the sem. before I realized I needed to change and couldnt get out of the class. His lectures are boring, focuses too much on examples you will never see on the test, and now that were online its even worse. Dont take unless you MUST.
lectures are fine, I sometimes felt he went to slow on easy stuff and to fast on hard stuff so it made lecture easy to zone out in, still essential to go to though. The exams are very hard, make sure you do lots of practice problems before. He does basic examples in class but the exams go beyond that. He usually tries to make lectures engaging.
Had Ruggles second semester for Chem032. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Get your face shown and prove you are working hard. Ruggles is super misunderstood as a professor. I was terrified of him before I went to his office hours and he really is on our side. He is willing to help anyone struggling with the material. It is a HARD class but he does his best.
Professor Ruggles is undeniably a good professor. He's personable, explains the material in a way that's eminently comprehensible, and seems to genuinely care about students. That said, his exams are extremely difficult relative to the practice material (the class exam average was a 75). Be ready to study all day, every day if you opt for summer.
A funny professor, but the content is hard. He gives many example problems during class, but a lot of studying outside is still needed.
Chem 032 is hard no matter what. Ruggles is clear, organized and knowledgeable, but his lectures drag and it's easy to check out after 1/2 hour. Since the tests are made by other professors as well, he would be a solid option for 032. I also like his pre-lecture music.
I had an awful time in this class this past semester. Ruggles would post 1-2 hours worth of lecture to do outside of class time, and class would be used for an hour and a half of homework Q&A, which made waking up and going on my laptop for class time feel pointless. His lectures are confusing and messy. Would not recommend him for gen chem.
I honestly dont understand where "Struggles with Ruggles" comes from. Yes the lectures/notes can be long, but the tip is to run them at 1.25x speed and WRITE THEM DOWN!! If you do the hw and watch the lectures, you'll be fine. He's a very understanding person and will always help you out. Ppl who think he's a bad teacher most likely slack off.
Struggles with Ruggles is definitely real, esp during summer (DONT RECOMMEND unless you like pain and anxiety max level). Great professor, willing to go over questions or concerns. Pay attention to his posted and in person lectures, if not grill on the textbook, and look for major and minor trends and you will do well on the exams. Best of luck!!
Dont take the summer course unless thats THE ONLY THING on your plate. He is the best Chem prof, willing to explain and work with you, hes understanding and a good guy. But, the amount of work and lectures to learn is just ridiculous, Im sure its the courses content not him, just be warned.
Ruggles assigns convoluted, poorly planned video lectures for in between classes and uses class time to go over example problems. If you like to go at your own speed and trust yourself to stay caught up, you'll probably be fine, but if you want a traditional (better) college lecture format, I would strongly advise finding a different professor.
The gen chem curriculum at UVM is pretty terrible, but of all the professors, Ruggles definitely is the best choice. He does a flipped classroom format so you watch roughly an hour and a half of lectures before each class (which can easily sped up) and then the class reinforces the lectures. It's a rough course, but having him makes it the easiest.
Definitely a hard class but Ruggles gives you every resource available. In person lectures (really just Q&A sessions) are optional to attend as they are also recorded on Teams. You have to watch the actual lectures prior to class but they can be sped up 2x without much issue.
You will need to work to do well in this class, but it is not impossible. In person class time is helpful if you are caught up on the prerecorded lectures. Otherwise stay home and work through practice problems yourself. Go to TA office hours with questions, work hard on your post-labs, and do the practice exams. Final is difficult.
Unless you're good at teaching yourself don't take him. His exams are insanely hard and he's rude when responding to emails or answering questions. The textbook is useless except for homework questions and you rely on him for the notes. Overall he's a terrible professor and as someone who never struggles with classes, this was terrible.
Ruggles seems like a nice guy but I ended up having to withdraw with the class because I was doing so poorly. Unless you have a strong foundation of chemistry going into this class and can teach yourself complex topics this class is going to be extremely diffucult for you. It is entirely lecture based and your final grade is from 4 exams. Good luck
Just choose Hoeltidge. Point blank period. She's better. He's still a nice dude....but she's better.
This class is mostly online lecture videos, about 2 hours per class that can be put on 2x speed easily. 75% of your grade is exam based , the rest is lab hw & hw tests that you can use your notes for. If you watch the videos, go to class, do the bookwork, and go to ta office hours if you need help, you'll be fine.
I love Ruggles!! The people who complain about him clearly don't want to put the work in and are blaming the professor for their laziness. He posts a TON of resources including past exams, supplemental video lectures, recitations, etc. He is always available and clearly wants students to succeed. Very fair grader, clearly excited ab the subject.
He made some girl cry in lecture today, guy should be fired.
I absolutely loved Ruggles as a professor. He was very clear about everything and had many resources on blackboard. Although his lecture videos and lectures are a bit repetitive, I thought they were helpful. It takes a bit to get used to his style, but once you do it's great. He's funny and engaging. Chemistry is hard regardless of the professor.
The class is very difficult to do well in, especially since the only things going into it are the 4 exams and hw quizzes. The lectures are the same thing as the homework, both being very confusing and hard to learn from. Ruggles is very hard to reach and is not helpful during office hours. You basically need to teach yourself every single topic.
Ruggles' videos and notes are very helpful. He tries to use a flipped classroom format, but it ends up just being a normal class which is frustrating (to me). To succeed you NEED to keep up with the lectures & practice problems. There are also a few things he gets wrong in the lectures lol. He knows about struggles with Ruggles too so be nice.
This man is truly the grinch. He does not care about his students or their learning. He continuously uses lectures that were created in 2020 during the height of covid out of sheer laziness. He provides no insight during lecture as to exam materials which made going to class basically pointless. Do not recommend at all.
Chem 31 is a very hard class. Ruggles is not a bad teacher, you just have to get used to the style of the class. Watch the videos, do the homework, go to class!! Grade is heavily based on exams so study hard and do the past practice exams.
The amount of video lectures he assigns outside of class is absurd (usually 3-4 hours/wk). I strongly disagree w/ those who say "if you didn't like him it's because you didn't try" because I spent so much of my time trying to study/do homework for this class. Unless you love chemistry, I would avoid at all costs. He did stream lectures, though
Ruggles was great. You just had to put time and effort into the course material.
Unwilling to accommodate students, strict grader and refused to give me an extension on a HW quiz when I missed a week of school due to my parents getting divorced and my mom hearing she may have cancer.
Has online lectures, writes electronic notes, talks the exactly the same as the recorded lecture, possibly worse. Writes a lot of definitions and test some on exams. Overall, lazy.
My feeling about Ruggles is complicated. I believe he was a great professor before the pandemic and is experiencing burnout. All of his lectures are YouTube videos (that he makes) and class time is solving the problems. This learning style did not work for me at all.
This class with Ruggles is easily the worst experience I have ever had in school. He does not care about his students at all. His syllabus is contradictory, and he never gives extensions under ANY circumstances. His emails are very informal and rude. He denied my requests to come to office hours, and his exam sessions are useless.
You're better off showing up to a Hoeltge or Zahardis lecture. Good luck.
Chem is hard with Ruggles but that is because it is chem, not Ruggles. He is doing his best.
Ruggles exams are poorly written. They rarely cover things we don't go over in class, but will often ask questions in a way we have never heard before, which makes the exams much more difficult than they should be. Exams are worth of most of your grade, and taken directly from former ACS exams. Ruggles is a fine lecturer, but that's it.
really liked him, was funny. If you are a procrastinator, be careful because the work creeps up and is hard to catch up. Can also fast forward videos and lectures to your preferred pace which is school.
Chem is really hard, but Ruggles makes it as accessible as possible. Most of the content is taught through prerecorded videos, which I liked as it allowed me to learn at my own pace where/whenever I wanted. The lectures were helpful for reinforcing concepts. Definitely do the homework.
Chem 32 is a tough class, very much sink or swim. Ruggles is a decent teacher and a funny dude, but SO inefficient. You have to watch online lecture videos and go to in person lectures in order to get all of the info. Watch the videos before class and do the optional practice problems to do well on exams. Take Amy instead if you can!
He uses a flipped classroom model which makes learning chemistry incredibly difficult. You are responsible for hours of videos a week outside of class and in lecture, he just goes over practice problems. His exams are also standardized with other chem profs and often times there are gaps in material which makes it hard to do well.
Ruggles doesn't lecture in class and instead opts to use a flipped classroom format. While this provides plenty of resources, the class is entirely self-taught. Depending on the student, it may not be worth it to even show up, I know I never did. Take another professor if you can, not worth the bother of the extra effort.
He wasn't as bad as people said. A nice professor who lectures fairly boringly, but it's chemistry so either you find it fascinating or you don't.
Really nice guy, offered us a test 1 retake which was nice of him, I just had trouble with the actual content of the course, I had never taken a chemistry class before. Answered questions and had review sessions on Sundays which is nice of him. ALEKs was awful though, and either he didn't know exactly how to use it or had little control over it.
Pros -Easy to reach outside of class. -Generally kind and cares about student success. Cons -Disorganized. Information not presented clearly, homework hard to find on site. -Too many resources, not presented in a clear way. -Repeats homework lectures in class. -Often makes mistakes, handwriting is hard to read. -Gives A LOT of homework.
I had a difficult time in chemistry this semester, and I don't think that Ruggles teaching style helped this. Lectures were boring and I hated the choice to use ALEKS as a learning platform. Quizzes and the group assignment were grade boosters. If you can I would go with the other two choices for chem profs, but you can still do well with him.
Ruggles is no longer using the "flipped classroom" method that led to most of the negative reviews on here. He now uses ALEKS, an online platform where all quizzes and tests are given. Tests are open-note but I still found them very difficult. Ruggles was always a good bit behind in lecture, making chem lab incredibly difficult. He's a nice guy!
Ruggles claims to use a "flipped classroom" approach, but has completely ditched said method. He expects students to watch online lectures as well as attend lectures, in which he teaches rather than practicing questions. He is often behind on content causing confusion with the paired lab section for the course.
made us watch all lectures outside of class time and wasted class time answering questions in the most unengaging way possible.
His lectures are so boring. I ended up just doing all my learning on ALEKS and I was fine.
Nice guy, bad lecturer. Class basically graded through ALEKS and though content aligned somewhat, questions were always formatted differently. He's happy to adjust grades if you email for partial credit. Does few problems in class and struggled alot with ALEKS. One 10-person group project unrelated to any of class content due at end of semester.
Very monotone, and just reads right off his notes without explaining concepts. Did not learn anything about chem. Exams were online, but problems are very difficult and do not match the homework format.
I hated chem1400 but ruggles himself wasn't bad. chem just isn't for me. in terms of a pre req that I have to take, overall wasn't too bad. tests and quizzes are online. lectures are recorded. he's pretty funny and excited about chem. several extra cred opportunities
No point in going to lectures, I watched all of the recorded ones at 2x speed. The class is generally inefficient and I was always ahead, I could condense the 2 hours into 15 minutes. If you actually want to get something out of the class pick another professor.
The class is generally inefficient, but the professor is a nice guy who cares about student success. Using unstuck study along with the course resources can help make the most of the class.
Yes, his lectures are kinda boring and chem is hard, but as a student with a chronic illness, this was by far my most accessible class. All his lectures are recorded and posted online so you can watch from your dorm and he posts lots of supplemental help videos. All quizzes/tests are also online and you have multiple days to do them.
Stop the Ruggles hate! This course has very clear and forgiving grading, opportunities to retake quizzes, non-mandatory attendance, and completely online exams and final. His prerecorded lectures on Brightspace/youtube are much more concise and understandable. In person lectures get sidetracked, tedious, and are unneeded to do well in the course.
Ruggles is a good professor but his lectures are very long and he posts the lecture notes anyways. The exams and quizzes are not too hard and are all online.
Very difficult course just due to the content, but Ruggles did a great job at teaching it. Offered us a re-do for our first exam and changed a few other grading things to accommodate us. You are graded by only exams and quizzes plus lab. If you enjoy chemistry he is a great teacher.
Ruggles is a great guy. Such a contrast from the rest of the gen chem department. He genuinely wants you to do well. He gives so many ways to learn the content (video lecture at home ,textbook, in-person lectures working with a mix of teaching content and practice problems). Exams are super similar to book problems and predictable.
Almost exclusively uses the program ALEKS for graded material which is incredibly confusing, difficult to navigate and often marks questions wrong for being in a different format. When brought up to Ruggles he said there was nothing he could do. Also lectures are consistently 1-2 weeks behind the lab so most of the material has to be learned solo.
I would definitely attend all the lectures you can because if you don't, good luck getting good grades on the exams. He was funny and a good person, but his teaching style didn't help me that much and he only recommends you do homework, he doesn't assign it, so definitely actually do the homework too.
Many questions on assessments were on topics we haven't discussed in lecture. I would assume that he doesn't look over the questions on the assessments before releasing them. He didn't do a single demonstration in lecture. He cares about the success of students, but not enough to put effort towards making sure we understand the material.
Possibly the most infamous professor at UVM. It's called “struggles with Ruggles” for a reason. This class will be a hit to your GPA. You can get a 90 in this class and his screwed up grading curve will STILL make it a hit to your GPA. This class is an “avoid-at-all-costs” level of traumatic in my opinion.
I have never heard a good thing about this professor. He creates his own grading scale at the end of every semester and will curve down your grade. I had an 82 count as a B- in all my other courses but it's a C+ this semester in his course. He's unfair and does not want to see you succeed. I would highly, highly recommend a different prof
Unfair grader. Everything is through ALEKS which leaves no room for rounding calculations. An 82 should not be a C+ but he curved all the grades down for no reason. Has a terrible attitude when emailed with concerns and makes uncomfortable jokes and comments during lecture.
Avoid taking chemistry with Erik Ruggles. He is a completely unfair grader, our final grade was calculated in comparison to other's in the class, instead of the actual grade we deserve. My friend got a B+ with a 91. He's a boring lecturer, often doesn't respond well to questions, and doesn't seem to care about the success of his students.
He's an alright professor. Lectures aren't mandatory but GO TO THEM or you will be incredibly lost. All quizzes/exams are online. Yes, the class was hard, but that's because chemistry is hard, it's not really Ruggles's fault. Overall I'd just say he's pretty average.
He curved our grades DOWN. Also when i had a health scare he refused to extend deadlines. I missed a quiz because I was in the ER, he said lol you had plenty of time. I got an 81% and he graded it a C+. He also does not reveal this weird grading scale until AFTER the final. I got stuck with him for 1450 too. Wish me luck
Ruggles is a nice guy, but he CANNOT teach. His lectures are slow and fall behind lab pace. If you want to do decently in the labs you have to watch his lecture videos online. I will say that Ruggles wants you to succeed, and tests and quizzes are online which makes the class easy to do well in. But truly a bad lecturer.
Ruggles is a poor representation of a UVM professor. He rushed through the last few units; it felt like his goal was to get it over with instead of to teach. Half the material on the final was info we had learned in the last 2 weeks. Also, he fell so behind that we were 2 weeks off the lab schedule, so we had to learn solo if we wanted to pass.
His syllabus specifically says “Please note that you are not competing for grades in this course: if everyone scores in the "A-range," I will give everyone "A"s for the course (really!).” Really? Because today, a month and a half after the fall semester ended, he finally sent us his contrived grading system and a 91.9-90% was counted as a B+.
I found Ruggles insanely uncharming and on top of that a bad lecturer. If never having to attend class is your style as well as online exams that are unsecure (meaning you can just plug any question into AI if you lack an ethical and moral backbone), then Ruggles is your guy. his "homework modules" are the same regurgitated bs he says in lectures
I once heard someone say this guy would have really enjoyed being a guard in the Stanford Prison Experiment. Yeah. That's an apt description.
His grading scheme is nonsense. He grade deflates for no reason (83 is a B-, 82.5 is a C+, 91.9 is a B+) and the labs in the course have quizzes that are so unpredictable it makes it nearly impossible to get over a low A- (or for ruggles B+) in that component alone. The material is one thing the grading scheme is another.
Try to avoid taking gen chem with Ruggles unless you're naturally good at chemistry and math. He's a good lecturer and his problem solving examples are helpful. But the grading is generally pretty brutal and it's hard to do well in this class unless you use AI on the exams (they're all online).
Most of your grade is from 3 exams that don't represent the material taught in the lecture. The professor is nice, but unfortunately, the class is not set up for success. One failed assignment is very hard to recover from. The grading is also not clear, and you are left in the dark as to what your grade is during the semester.
worst professor I've had by FAR at UVM. Rounds down all grades, I'm typically a good student A's/B's I've done considerably well on the exams and I'm still worried about my class grade because what should be a B or a B minus is considered a C to him. Try to avoid chem with him, it's an insult to the tuition you pay.
Although I did not learn much from his teachings, he was a chill professor who offered many bonuses.
The entire class takes place on ALEKS. You recieve no feedback from Ruggles himself and the quizzes/exams are vastly different from the material he covers in lecture, which is lazy and extremely unhelpful. He also has an obscure final grading system that essentially makes an A- a 92%.
do not take him. he rounds down - a 90-92 is a B+. lectures are super uninteresting and he posts lectures and notes so you don't have to go. his grading SUCKS and he doesn't curve individual exams if everyone did poorly. don't take him
I fought through blood and bone for this
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD he grades very poorly he belittles his students making them not feel comfortable to ask questions I have no clue how he hasn't gotten fired yet over the 15+ years he has worked here.I studied with friends did the homework, went to tutoring sessions and still didn't pass my first exam can't wait to withdraw.
take chem with a different professor if at all possible!
I sacrificed having four 8:30s to not have ruggles again
For context I'm a non-traditional student returning to college after being a college professor. He is one of the worst professors I've seen. I could write a novel on this but all you need to know if I'm taking 8:30am classes next semester to avoid him for 1450, avoid at all costs (including considering alternate instructors or community college).
NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU VALUE YOUR WELLBEING. you'll be set up for failure, no matter how smart you think you are, you will be put to the test in this class. Worst teacher I have ever had, worst grades I have ever had. If i get him next semester i am no joke dropping out of UVM. Protect your peace, do not take this class.
Ruggles is your average chem teacher. He explains topics very well and always answered questions in great detail. In addition to his office hours, he has many many videos and helpful resources on Brightspace. As long as you attend lecture (even though it's not mandatory) and stay on top of homework and study for exams, you'll be fine.
Pros:Good at teaching, takes&posts notes, has review sessions Cons: So much HW, half of material not covered in class, hard exams w/ stupid questions, difficult to do well TIPS: Take good notes, get a tutor, study with others, prepare to neglect other classes and not have your time and energy spent studying pay off.
Exams are in person, and 45 multiple choice questions, each with 5 possible answers. Exams are the worst part of this class because you are expected to do what is equivalent to 2 homework assignments within 3 hours. He rounds down. The cheat sheet provided by him is not organized and has random, useless info on it. Take someone else.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had, other teachers in the same course have test averages sometimes almost 20 percentage points higher than Ruggles. Never would recommend.
The overall test averages have never been above 70%, and he doesn't care on changing that because he says that it's "normal" and that a C is what he expects everyone to get in his class. He also falls behind the lab schedule, so you don't learn the stuff you need to know for lab, you have to learn it on your own.
His most recent exam for Gen Chem 1 had an average of below 70 (he wouldn't give an exact number). Avoid him at all costs, even if that cost is an 8:30
With test averages below the 70's (he wouldn't even tell us the real score), god awful test questions, boring lectures I would steer FAR clear
Good guy over all. Teaches well but you have to spend a lot of time doing practice work outside of class if you're going to succeed. Very encouraging in office hours.
If you have him, do yourself a favor and drop the class. Every bad thing written is 100% true if not worse. Other professors students get 90% on tests, which is unheard of for Ruggles. Class average never exceeds a 70%. This class is a joke and its setting you up to fail. Shame on UVM for allowing this.
He's a great guy and fine prof. There are better instructors for this course. His tests are pretty hard and the class is pretty self paced. The lectures move very fast so if you don't pay attention for 30 seconds you're screwed. His tests have weird personal questions on them.
Please drop this class if you have Ruggles. His class exam averages are below a 75 almost every time which is really a reflection of the professor. He goes extremely fast with little attention to important details and it's very easy to get left behind.
he literally told us his course average is 70 and "that's good for chem." i feel like the lectures in class didn't even help me with the exam no matter how many notes i took. but the exams are open book and online so i guess that's a plus. you can also retake quizzes which helped my grade a bit. attend SIs and lock in
He is by far the worst chem professor here. Questions on tests were extremely hard and confusing. The equation sheet he provides is unorganized and hard to read. Homework and lectures never even helped on tests. I can't stress how awful the exams are. I would never recommend Ruggles and warn anyone against him.
RUN FAR FAR AWAY. DO NOT TAKE AT ANY COST. made me consider transferring all semester. the WORST professor at this school. spent 20 minutes of class after exams telling us that you "aren't supposed to get a good grade in chem." makes a difficult subject unbearable and unlearnable. avoid at ALL costs!!!!!
if you need to be humbled, take this class. This is a GENCHEM class with a teacher that doesn't curve, doesn't round, and decided to change the grading system where you need an 83 to have a B-. He will write seventeen equations on the board and call that "teaching". The notes are nothing like the homework, which is nothing like the test.
While he is very knowledgeable in chemistry, his lectures are not engaging and he is hard to follow. Often I used YouTube to supplement his material, as it was not explained well in class. 25-35 ALEKS HW questions for each chapter and three tests+final worth the majority of your grade. I recommend taking chem with a different professor if you can.
The lectures went extremely quick and did not cover the materials in any meaningful way, forcing me to learn most of the content through youtube. He rounds grades DOWN for some reason, meaning a 92 would be a B+, and the class does nothing to prepare you for the exams.
“Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here”. Anything you've ever heard or will hear about Ruggles is true, if you can avoid him at any costs do. He teaches the material at the slowest pace possible and then expects you to learn everything on your own through the online homework.
He is absolutely terrible. Avoid at all costs. His test averages are well below every other chemistry teacher (sometimes by genuinely 20 percentage points). I have never hated any professor more. I can honestly say he made my first semester significantly worse.
Booooooooo
The class averages were abysmal, but there is a slight curve which helps by around 5%. If you're not a good test taker, then this course isn't for you.
Not UVM finest but not as bad as people say. UVM Chemistry is tough in all sections and Rugs is no different. Tests are hard but so are other sections test from what I see. Rugs does have vids that are pretty good. Kinda cool guy and will help out. I think he's not with grade inflation so he gets it harsh online. He's an average UVM Chem prof.
Everything you've heard is correct esp "struggles with ruggles". His test averages are 15 points lower than the other gen chem profs and he doesn't allow "cheat sheets" like they do. I had a basic understanding of chem before this course and he explains things to be more confusing than before. The whole class is on ALEKS - do the extra credit!
