Very Boring, Talks to much, not fun, but no labs and little work
he really brightens my learning experience
I've enjoyed the classes I've taken from him.
Very unclear in his lectures, but hes nice. b willing to study, labs easy
I like him a lot, he's funny and always willing to help.
I took his course at UMBC and he is excellent!
Funny guy, but class is very boring. Have to study to do well on tests. Easy labs.
I love dr.scully. he is so nice and so willing to help even after class and emails back within hours. no lab reports either. makes cute little jokes
Great Teacher; Likes to answer your questions; EASY LABS- NO LAB REPORTS! Never takes attendance!! Just an adorable guy
Dr.Scully is very nice. He talks a lot but is always willing to help you. The labs are easy and he does not grade them. I always got out of labs early.(about 30 - 40 minutes) There are four exams which are not difficult if you study.
very boring...labs are easy...tests are tough study study study!!!
A really great teacher. He curved the entire class by a letter grade! And you don't have to take the final if you have over a B in the class. Just be willing to study and use the CD, it's what really made a difference for me!
no attendance. no labs but you get lab credit. Just show up and take notes and review notes before the test and you can get an A. Really nice man and very easy to work with when making up tests.
a good professor, as long as you read the text along with what's being taught. A little forgetful but is a (very)fair grader, and wants you to succeed. typical 300-level courseload, interesting. Take him for marine bio since thats what he does best =)
ok teacher..class is easy, but wouldn't exactly call him the best teacher when it comes to clarity-especially in terms of his test--know your concepts and how to apply them! labs are easy-no reports..overall easy class, but EXTREMELY BORING!
Very nice man and helpful. early morning class was hard to stay awake! but very knowledgeble professor. Take just read the book and take notes.
He is quite spacey and talks to himself. Too early in the damn morning for this class, when the lights go out for overhead time, IM KNOCKED OUT!! Final test boosted my overall average in his class. Ok teacher!!
The NICEST teacher you will ever have ever!!!I sucked ass on my exams, didnt even bother to take the final, cause i was going to re-take the test, but he encouraged me to. even though it was two days after finals. Don't ask me how but i got a C!!!
such a nice guy. cares a lot about students. take him
Extremly sweet, however he does tend to go off topic with his interests of science. Extremly dedicated to helping students. I would recommend him, however you don't need to buy the lab book because you never use it. Lecture outlines are online, but go to lectures for more details.
hes really nice and if you need any kind of help then hes always there, sends emails with frequent ?'s from students, tests are pretty hard, i dropped the class, couldnt pass the tests, mumbles alot
Sweet man! Really wants you to do well. If you give him suggestions he will use them. Test are hard, just study. No homework. Just 3 test and the final. Lectures with powerpoint. Don't have to go to class notes are on blackboard. No attendance. Has lots of review sessions before tests. Monotone
Nice guy - always willing to help. Will e-mail you with questions and answers. Very very helpful. Wants you to do well and understand the topic
great teacher! so helpful. Just take notes and pay attention and you will do fine. no attendance, but have to go to class to get notes. TAKE HIM!!! tests can be challenging but not if you study and take good notes!
Boring Man-- SPEAKS MONOTONE THE WHOLE LECTURE. I would never take him again.
The test are very hard!! he puts all the notes online and doesnt take attendance except for labs. he is very boring to listen to and doesnt really make much sense.
He may be a little wacky but he is an extremely nice guy. He will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material and what is going on. I suggest taking his course, even though his exams can be a little tough because they consist of a bunch of short essay questions
lecture, lecture, lecture.. that's all he does. he doesnt ask for any input from students which makes the class go by VERY slowly. bring some coffee to class. tests were respresentative of lectures so class is pretty easy
Great teacher. Always available for extra help. Tests are all essay, very lenient on grading. Four tests and a large project. I failed the first test, and ended up with a B in the class. Awesome grading scale.
I had Dr.Scully for 3 classes, the most recent being Marine Biology. He was the coolest and easiest teacher in the entire biology dept! He always made time for students with questions/problems. He allowed extra time during his easy multiple choice tests if anyone needed it! Dr. Scully was always jovial and pleasant! He loves biology and it shows!
had him for biodiversity- all notes are online in a sort of PP format. Study those notes exactly as is online and you will get an A. Know the special little things about each phylum because there are fill in the blanks that he expects you to know them. there are a few homework assignments, make sure you do them. It will help. And he curves too.

Really borring class. His tests are not that easy becuase he words questions in a strange manner and there is no multiple choice. Its mainly fill in the blanks and he is really rough at grading free response/essay questions. I dont recomend him.
He lectures the whole time and doesn't ask for any input from the class. He says just to "know the concepts" for his tests but you do in fact have to remember as much as you can verbatim. Also for my class he only had two tests and a final; that's like having a mid-term and a final for a science class. He's passable but I wouldn't recommend him.
(Had him for UMBC's BIOL 301) Good prof. Good attitude, has a sense of humor. Really knows his stuff. Lectures from power point presentations. VERY engaged with his classes--always available to ask questions of him, responsive to emails. However, tests are challenging. You must study, especially if you don't come to class, or you're screwed.
Had him for Ecology and Evolution at UMBC - just lectures during class and talks slow enough that you can write what he's saying but not slow enough to put you to sleep. Don't bother with the textbook, just study PP slides and your notes and you'll do fine on the exams. Responds to emails very fast - generally good professor and person.
Had him at UMBC for Ecology. He is a great and kind hearted. Just study for exams and you will be fine. No multiple choice on tests, all fill in's and short responds but fair grading. A nice caring person.
Easy class...he is a very nice prof and is helpful if you need it. the material is not hard...there are 2 tests and the final. lab write ups are minimal. Def take this class.
Dr. Scully is the nicest person ever, but he is extremely boring when he lectures. The material is not hard and he puts the slides on blackboard, but not until right before the tests. You will not be able to stay awake for most of the classes, but the material was interesting when I studied it later. Overall, he's a good teacher.
Overall pretty easy class as long as you study the powerpoints he gives (which he puts on blackboard). Does put a lot of examples & graphs on the powerpoints that start to get boring after a bit. Tests are not multiple choice, usually fill ins and short answers. Labs are easy. Grading on assignments is pretty easy. Very enthusiastic about material.
He is the nicest person I've ever met. If you are having problems, he will do anything to help you. He's my advisor and I go to him everytime I'm having a problem with something.
Sweetest little man I've ever met! Will do ANYTHING to help you, with class material and any questions you may have. Exactly what a college prof should be, EXTREMELY interested and passionate about the subject, nice, and extremely accomodating! Exams are based soley on notes.. I've had him for 2 classes, and never touched the book in either!
I had him for Eco Evo Bio 301 at UMBC. He is a very nice teacher but his test are super hard. He just talks and talks and his exams are really really wordy. You get tired of reading before the question is done. The book is useless dont buy it, he teaches from his lecture slides. dont make the mistake i did and not print them out or u will be sorry
Dr. Scully is great. He tells you exactly what you need to know on the exams. his tests are short answer and fill in the blank. lab is a breeze, i had a friday lab at 12:30 and left no later than 1:30. he's really nice, lectures were boring and didn't really go but the pp he puts up is all you need. never looked at the textbook.
Good professor, he is always available to meet and he spent a class period before each exam reviewing as we needed. Did not use the book at all during the semester.
Very nice man- my advisor and instructor for directed readings- helpful, kind, all around good teacher! DR is a very good class to take with him
Cool Prof. Tells funny yet corny science jokes. Overall, easy class & a nice guy. Take this class just read the lecture slides. easy A
Awesome prof! He is very useful when needing outside knowledge. Yes the class may seem easy but tests NEED STUDYING! read the pwrpts and listen to him. funny yet corny guy but great prof! take him for every bio class possible!
He is a very good professor and very passionate about the subject he teaches. He is also very humorous. Lecture is not mandatory and neither is the textbook because he provides all the need information and charts on power point slides. The test are straightforward but you will have to study really well for them.
Dr. Scully is super passionate about what he teaches. That being said, he can ramble sometimes during a lecture about certain organisms. 15 page paper to write but tests are easy with LOTS of memorization so defiantly have to study. Will help you realize what you are/aren't passionate about in biology so take him if you can!
extremely helpful teacher, everything you need to know was provided on the study guide. Attendance may not be necessary but you definately need to study for the test. Nice man, allowed late assignments
Prof. Scully is EXTREMELY boring. He thinks that every student LOVES biology and is taking this class because of that love...WRONG! it's a gened! Very few people actually go to class each time (I do). Tests are very hard, and you need to study, but he gives a study guide. There are better bio teachers for sure.
He doesn't give any work besides a squirrel project and a seminar that you teach whatever you want. He is so cute couldn't hold my attention at all but he was so corny and just the biggest dork! He didn't have us buy a textbook because it was unnecessary and he gave us all the notes we needed for the test a couple days before the test. I got 100%
Dr. Scully may stray from PowerPoint material at times but it's only because he's had a lot of experience in the field and is passionate about what he teaches. His study guides are extremely helpful but exams are made up mostly of questions requiring some writing. Attendance not mandatory but is helpful. Learned a lot and recommend taking him!
One of the most ridiculous classes I have ever taken. Because we didn't have a book, we were forced to Google the information "learned" (he didn't exactly teach) in order to study for the test. I retained almost no information from this class. Squirrel project didn't count for a grade, Seminar was easy to present, and Biology in the News was easy.
Dr. Scully was great! But his test are hard, full of short essay questions and fill in the blank with a word bank not including all the terms just some. You can past the test if you study the outlines and take notes no book is needed and a 10 pg paper is due at the end of the semester along with a final.
Prof Scully REALLY loves biology! He's a nice guy and lectures can be boring but tests are not too bad (multiple choice is online). If you're taking it as a core, I would pass-fail it but he grades easily and you can get a B without trying very hard.
He is a really nice teacher and he really loves biology, but I will admit his lectures are kind of boring. His tests are pretty much all short answer essay questions so you do need to study to pass.
Great and easy prof. Really intelligent, makes the class interesting. Exams are partially online and in class. No attendance. Powerpoints are on Blackboard. Curves tests sometimes, wants everyone to do well.
Extremely easy. He basically told us we would be receiving an "A" in the class. His lectures are beyond boring. I stopped taking notes entirely in the second half of the semester. If you're looking for an easy class to fill an honors seminar requirement, then take him!
Funny guy, but not many people understand his joke so it's slightly awkward. Exams are tough if you didn't study everything. He gives condense versions of his lectures and study guides.
Class is very unorganized with mini assignments that pop out of nowhere that are worth very little. Tests make up the majority of the grade. Class is BORING, but not mandatory, however lab is. The class average were low C's on all of the tests. Just pay attention and complete the study guides and you should be okay.
DON'T TAKE DR. SCULLY! He is so nice, but a TERRIBLE teacher. Nobody in my class every knew what the heck he was saying 99% of the time because he talks to you like you're one of his colleagues instead of a student in an introductory course. He gives you study guides, but they don't help. I studied them and never got above a low C on my tests..
Great guy, very willing to help you with anything. Pay attention in lecture and study for the exams and you should get a B+ no problem. Lab is really more of an extended lecture and the exams are kind of hard. But i got a B+ in the class with little effort
Enthusiastic, but his lectures are very boring and not helpful. Highly recommend reading the textbook and taking notes. Study guides aren't really helpful either. Labs are mostly spent on discussion papers. All assignments are worth very little compared to tests. Only attendance in lab is mandatory. Nice, but be prepared to teach yourself.
Dr. Scully is very knowledgeable and eager to help. He moves through the material very quickly and sometimes goes on tangent stories. Take very detailed notes because his exams can be very specific. Overall the class isn't horrible, but you HAVE to study to do well.
The class has a lot of material to cover and he has to go very quickly. He does go off on tangents from time to time. His exams are very specific. Studying is a must. However, Dr. Scully is incredibly nice and understanding and he's also very approachable and easy to get in touch with. I wish there were more teachers like him.
Teaches at half the speed (& covers half as much) as B. Johnson and Hearn with limited clarity. Belabors the simple concepts with so many examples and unnecessary studies that it becomes EXTREMELY boring and hard to follow. If you want your money's worth, DON't TAKE HIM. He might be a little easier, but it's not worth falling asleep in class.
His online class was pretty basic. Two discussion papers, 3 exams and take home portions of 2 of the exams. He is very flexible with when you take the exams as well which was nice!
Dr. Scully is a very understanding professor. He gives students plenty of time to turn things in, and he posts all his powerpoints online. He does go on tangents, and his lectures can get boring. His exams are fair, and based off of class notes. You never have to crack open the textbook, because he teaches you everything that you need to know.
Marine Biology. Half the class was online and the other half was lecture, but he recorded everything so I never went to class. His lectures are SUPER boring. He teaches more about the physical oceanography than anything else, which is disappointing. He's really nice though, and he'll help you if you need it.
You'll realize five minutes into the class taking notes is difficult. Long-winded and very difficult to follow along, also he hates to be interrupted. Study guidelines and online lectures are all you need.
Dr. Scully is an Amazing professor! Going to class is very beneficial but he also records his lectures. His study guides are very helpful and exams are pretty straightforward. As long as you study you'll end up doing fine! He's very easy to talk to and is an extremely fair grader. Definitely take him!!!!
Dr. Scully is so sweet and he has a lot of knowledge! his lectures are long and he doesn't interact with his students, but if you go to class and listen to him, you will receive an A. He also records all of his lectures, so attendance is not mandatory.
Great professor! Boring Lecturer, but easy A!
Bio 202 was fantastic with Dr. Scully. His lectures are very in-depth, so much so that you never even have to crack open a textbook. He takes a subject that can get tedious at times and makes it simple to understand with plenty of real-world examples. He brings up current events in science so everything you learn is relevant to right now. Take him!
Great teacher super knowledgeable. Attendance not required. Great outlines for tests. You'll only have 3 and then the final. Have a couple quizzes but get 3 chances. Super easy assignments. He's quirky and loves bird. No text book either.
Prof. Scully's honors seminar about evolutionary perspectives primarily consisted of lectures. Though the topics could be a bit dense, he was always enthusiastic about the material and willing to answer questions, making the class more interesting. He was a generous grader with grades including 3 exams with open-ended questions and a final project.
Awesome professor, you do have to study in order to get a good grade the class itself is very boring but dr scully tries his best to make It fun and relatable. Only 2 exams and a final which was not cumulative , study reviews very similar to tests.
Honestly, if you do not pick this professor, then you are missing out on an easy A. His tests and assignments are straight from the powerpoint. He is so nice that he lets you revise things. I know people hate this side of biology but he makes it as fun as possible. TAKE HIM!!!! if you are available for the summer it is even more doable to get an A.
Extremely boring lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, he does upload his lectures online, but to get an A with no attendance have to stay up to date with lectures. Exams are not straight forward big on vocabulary and short answer NO MULTIPLE CHOICE! A lot of the assignments seem to be busy work. Gives Loads of extra credit.
This is one of the most boring classes you may ever sit in. There is no student-teacher interaction. The material isnt that interesting. Labs are full of busy work, usually you can get out in an hour. Tests are hard, he does give a study guide but there was still some stuff that was unclear. Take GOOD notes ! Final isnt cumulative ! Good luck
Lectures feel long and boring, but he's a sweet old man who definitely knows his materials. Has exam review and review day that I find rlly helpful and he records these and lectures. The tests has multiple choice and short answers to choose from and you gotta rlly review the info and remember some names. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Scully is so lenient and understanding. I was nervous for this class because I am already bad at science and it's an honors course, but it was a breeze. Go to class, take notes, put in a little effort, and you'll get an A :)
while the material may not always be easy the class is extremely resourceful to allow you to know the material. Practice quizzes with two attempts- the quiz has his personal explanations under each answer after the first attempt. provides study guides. uploads all the lectures as panaptos. He is extremely nice and easy to talk to. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
