Don't leave Biola without taking this class with him. His heart is amazing and his teaching backs it up.
He is such a great teacher. At the end of the class, you will have learned so many things, that you are able to defend your faith because you have gained more knowledge from the class! Also, his lectures won't put you to sleep. He's quite amusing!!! :P

The best teacher I've ever had, hands down. He brings the Word in a powerful and easy to understand way. His love for Christ shows in his teaching! Very passionate.
A very great guy. A very overrated professor. His in class technique is very good, but his assignments and practicality need fine tuning.
Dr. T is da bomb. He's hotter than a Linkin Biskit concert. He does justice to anything he wears. I learned so much. Take him for any class you can... but get in line. He da man.
Very energetic
Good class. great guy. great passion
Awesome teacher. Try and take him before you leave; or at least sit in on a class or two.
This class will challenge how you view your life in relation to who God is and who Christ is. Dr. Thonnes teaches it showing the practicality of these theologies in every day life. It is impossible to leave this class without being more passionate for Christ.
he is one of those teachers that are slightly overrated in his school for being "unconventional". oh my...what an inspiration to us all. biola students are honestly the most pathetic people i've ever encountered in my life.
Probably the most passionate prof I've had. Thoennes gets you fired up about the word. I highly reccomend his class. It's worth the wait.
Honestly. Erik Thoennes is amazing.
Amazing class and amazing prof. Worth the wait.
Amazing professor. He dedication to God is very apparent in his teaching. He exudes enthusiasm about his subject and is just fascinating to sit under. I wish I could have taken this class again and again. Assignments and tests were hard, but for a good purpose--he wants his students to know doctrine very well and accurately.

Ok class, did not live up to expectation. Not really impressed with teaching did not get alot out of the class, unhappy with grading as well.

This is one of the classes you go to Biola for. It's worth the wait - Erik is an amazing person and it is a good thing that he isn't a softy whether or not you want to admit that.
I stumbled upon him thought it seems everyone knows him. He was great and quite inspiring. Be willing to put in the effort.
Amazing professor. Passionate and enthusiastic. He truly loves God and others and inspired me to do the same more than any other professor. I graduated last year and his class is one of the few that I still remember a lot from. He is definetly worth t
Incredible prof. Simply amazing.

Totally great teacher. I highly recommend him.
Best class I took at Biola.
This class helped me learn and grow more than any other. Also--two years after I took this class, Dr. Thoennes still said hi to me BY NAME. Not only that, but he is definitely interested in pointing his students toward God... I loved having him for a pro

awesome teacher
i admire his love for people, esp students. he takes the time to memorize EVERYONE'S name in all his classes. gotta love that.
E.T. woo woo!
Awesome
Talk about ADHD, but that's part of what makes Thoennes Thoennes. He is so passionate about what he is teaching and really has mastered the best ways to communicate with his students. Love love love this class!!!
So passionate and so intelligent. Take one of his classes if you can get in.
Awesome Man of God! Blows my mind away. This isn't just a class. It's a spiritual awakening. If you want to be brought closer to God, take this class :)
This class is amazing. His passion for the subject is evident in every class session, and you can tell that he really cares about his students as well.

Thoennes Rocks!!!
HARD TESTS!!!!
A lot of hype about Thoennes. As good as any Theology 1 teacher you can take. Don't be afraid to challenge the things said in class. Just because he yells them doesn't mean their authoritative.
tries to only teach the necessary, no busywork in his classes! Doesn't try to trick you on tests, just puts stuff he taught in the classromm so you better go to class!
Teaching is good but you must be able to learn from a preaching-esq style. If you go to class and read Grudem then both the creeds and examinations should be more than manageable. Possibly difficult areas: must meet weekly with a "cohort group," creed requirements are purposely not spelled out , and memorization of Bible verses must be precise.
A godly man!! A man who wants to see people living to the high calling Christ put on our lives! A man who desperately wants God to get HIS glory!!! His passion for God is attractive and will fire you up for holy living!
Amazing, caring, and an excellent prof overall. Practical tips: he notices when you don't pay attention and gets upset; be on time; for the creeds, go through Grudem and include every major topic; for the tests, study the practical applications that are in the course pack; and scripture memory has to be perfect for 100%.
You will never find a man more in love with Jesus and longing for others to love him the same. He will challenge you but I have never been closer to God than in his class or in the cohort groups. I never wanted this class to end.
Great professor - definitely best theology professor at Biola. Wish he taught more classes. Warning: class is tough, but defenitely worth it. Creeds are hard, but doable, the same with the tests. Easiest thing to forget are the reflections - because I didn't do them on time, they didn't count, which brought my grade down 10%, had an A, now B.
Great
I took Dr. Thoennes for Character of God, and it was life changing! Even though I took the class over a year ago, it is still effecting me. Dr. Thoennes has a passion for Jesus and for theology that is contageous and I am excited to continue to see how God uses him. Take all of his clasess!
In a tie for my favorite professor at Biola. He is absolutely one of the most amazing men you will ever meet. Going to class feels like going to a worship service. You walk out feeling refreshed and alive in your faith and on fire for Christ. The assignments can be tough, but are doable if you work at them. Do whatever you can to take his class
Do whatever it takes to get in his theology 1 class. He has a sincere care for students and a fiery, contagious passion for theology, particularly Jesus. I strongly recommend his class to anyone of any background.
This is the best class I have ever taken! You will be transformed by Dr. Thoennes. It isn't difficult if you just pay attention and keep up, which come naturally. He knows every single person's name and truly loves his students. The only people who rate the class poorly are bitter because they received a bad grade. Take him--you won't regret it!
I took his class for Theology 1 and it is easily the best class I have taken at Biola. His class is not nearly as difficult as many say. His passion for God's glory is beyond compare. EVERY Biola student should take a class with Thoennes!
I loved going to class every single week, I absolutely looked forward to it. If you can take his class do it. He is one of the best teachers and he is really interesting to hear lecture. His class is hard but worth all the effort.
I have an incredible amount of respect for Erik Thoennes. He is so humble, and is probably the most knowledgeable theologian I've ever met. I am blessed and honored to have taken his class. Be warned, it's not easy. But every single second spent on homework and in class is well worth it! My only regret is that it's not a year-long class!
Boo-ya! Best teacher, hands down! He succeeds at pointing you to Jesus. That's his focus. That's his passion. That's a phenomenal teacher.
Never a dull moment in his class. Loves God, loves his family, loves his students, just loves everybody. Amazing man of God and his amazingness will be evident. Very hard.. lots to memorize, if you procrastinate, you'll suffer big time.
There is a reason Dr. Thoennes is one of the favorite teachers of Biola. He is hard but he turns what many consider the most boring aspect of religious studies into a passionate topic with serious application to the daily life. At Biola you know better than to aim for an easy class/prof over a class/prof that will benefit you long after the degree
Thoennes is so passionate about the Bible and all that it can offer. He makes Biblical studies really interesting. There is a lot of homework, but it definitely pays off.
I love Dr. Thoennes. His class really isn't difficult; it just requires commitment. It's a lot of reading, but the material isn't difficult to grasp. You write 3 creeds over God, Humanity and Christ which are so helpful, while at the same time challenging. I have a deep respect for Thoennes, and am really grateful to have been in his class.
Wonderfully passionate theologian, take his class! Be aware that he’s a busy man & your questions will probably be referred to his TA (she is amazing & patient), & he tends to repeat the same phrases & stories over & over. I enjoyed his class, the reading, & the assignments because they force you to identify & solidify exactly what you believe.
This is by far the hardest class I have taken at Biola. Unless you want to be preached at every morning. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He gives papers with no rubrics that you will probably fail. Tests are ridiculous and everything is due on the same day. I am a straight A student and barely passed this class. The other reviews on here are lying to you.
Dr. Thoennes' class was by far the best Bible class I took at Biola thus far. His lectures are extremely engaging and he is passionate about what he teaches. He motivates his students and for the most part everyone I know has loved him. The reading is "mandatory" but definitely helps with comprehension. Tests are hard but hey, it's college.
Beautiful man inside and out, beautiful lecutres, cares about his students and what he teaches passionately. If you have the chance take any of his classes. You will have to work hard to get an A but it is so worth it.
Your grade is basically made up up the exams and the creed.
Here's the deal, Dr. Thoeness requires the amount of work they always told you college classes would require. He expects you to be spending time on his class every day. If you can't do this, this class will be really hard for you. If you are willing to put in the work, however, this will be an amazing class and you will be able to do well.
One of the best profs I've ever had but his class is no joke. His lectures will change your life but the assignments can be difficult. For the creeds try and approach them worshipfully. Go through the course pack and pick out the most important things, put on some worship music and enjoy the process. Study for the test pay attention in class.
I followed your videos on Youtube. Passionate; inspired, creative, concise.
Has a reputation as one of the most popular professors at Biola, and for a reason. Dr. Thoennes's class is incredibly challenging. His passion is contagious, although lectures can be a bit tiring from his constant energy. Workload is tough -- the creeds are strictly graded, and reading is an absolute must. Attendance is mandatory.
Not considerate of divergent viewpoints. Teaches only lecture style. Inconsiderate of students perspectives or feelings.
I have never taken Dr. Thoennes, but He must be a good professor, his students always rave about him when I ask why is everyone always trying to talk to him after class. I would like to have the opportunity to take his class but won't be able to. My usual class meets after his class, and this end of the semester the kids still rally around him.
Thoeness is one of those professors whose lessons you take with you the rest of your life. He deeply cares about each one of his students, and I continue to go to him for advice even though the class is over. His grading of the creeds is pretty intense, and the tests aren't a piece of cake, but I'd take this class again in a heartbeat.
Very intimidating. Asked him a question about an assignment and his response was "What kind of question is that?" Not very welcoming, I don't ever want to go to his office hours. Lectures sound like sermons. Will call out students who aren't paying attention. Lots of reading. Hated this class overall.
Theology I with Thoennes has probably been my favorite class at Biola. He cares so much about the well-being of his students and deeply desires for us to adequately know the curriculum. Yes, it's a fair amount of work. But if you really want to take your knowledge of God to another level then take this class. You won't regret it.
Theo 1 with Thoennes is a lot of work, but it's one of the best Biola bible classes. Thoennes lectures are incredible and I always learned something new each class. The creeds are kind of difficult, but if you follow the coursepack's outline and include everything you'll get a good grade. The creeds will also help you study for the test.
Heads up, you'll be graded on 2 things for Theo1: exams & doctrine papers, which he gives you NO outline or study guide for. I was excited to take his theo1 class but found it to be mediocre. He sprinkled his political opinions into almost every class session. He will repeat stories and go on tangents OFTEN. You will do a ton of reading!
Thoennes is a great lecturer and the workload is very manageable and not heavy. However, his grading criteria for your SOBs is not clear and they are worth a lot. And the class is super test heavy. Making up a bad grade is hard-and you usually will start off with a bad grade because he is intentionally unclear is assignment requirements.
Dr. Thoennes is one of the best speakers and lecturers at Biola. Far and away the most engaging prof on Zoom I have ever had. Makes heady, theological topics applicable and relevant. Logistically, grading criteria is unclear on the three creeds and tests are very difficult with no clear direction on how to best prepare for them.
I love Dr. Thoennes, he is s true man of God and cares deeply for his work! Beware though, his tests and papers are difficult and he does not give clear directions or a rubric for them. I'm not sure I would choose to take his class again. /:
One of my favorite professors. Every lecture was so insightful, I grew a lot in this class. Class is difficult, three tests and three creeds, but I learned so much from this class. You have to put effort in to do well.
Dr. Thoennes instills a love for the Lord and for theology to students through his passion. I came in with basic Sunday school knowledge and Dr. Thoennes expanded upon that, going in depth to amazing truths about God and the Scriptures. His class has tons of reading and unclear grading with the assignments, but I am grateful to learn so much.
This is a one sided presentation on evangelical theology. It does not represent denominations outside of the fundamentalist conservative church. The professor's opinion is the main focus of lectures vs both sides of the argument. I would have dropped if it wasn't required.
He is very inspirational and classes feel more like sermons than lectures. There is a lot of assigned reading, but most of it is from a systematic theology that is easy to skim. I agree with the consistent feedback here that he is not clear in his grading requirements, and his creed grading would likely cause some of the Philosophy profs to fail.
When I tell you this is my #1 class I've taken so far, I mean it. I found myself getting emotional more times than once just by Dr. Thoennes' example as a father, husband, and man. His class taught me SO much about God and Scripture. He, simply, is an inspiration. Take him if you have the chance. I'm so excited for Character of God next semester.
Thoennes is a really theological knowledgable man and it was cool to be able to learn from him but he isn't great at actually running a class. The instructions given for his assignments aren't very helpful and he gives pretty much no direction to study for exams. Interesting topic but an unnecessarily difficult class because of the professor.
Difficult, but extremely rewarding. If you stay on top of reading a work, the class is not that hard. Lectures are like sermons in terms of how impactful they are and he clearly cares deeply about his students and the truth. Incredible course, I wish there was a way to take it again.
Prof. Thoennes is one of the best teachers at Biola. He loves God and reflects that love to his students. His classes are lectures with voluntary answering from students. He is very funny and going to class is always exciting. His papers and tests are very difficult and the papers are almost impossible to get a 100% on. Amazing teacher though!
I had heard good things about Dr. Thoennes before taking his class and I was excited for it, but it was a disappointment. The classes are lecture heavy and homework is tedious. He is also unable to separate his personal opinions from course material and often pushes his ideas on students as fact. honestly, I dont see why students like him so much
He is truly a man who loves the LORD and is passionate about what he's teaching. I even shed a couple of tears on the last day of class because of how much I learned about Jesus through him. Reading can be heavy, and doing the statement of beliefs can be tricky. As long as you're on top of everything, you should be good in this class.
