Do not take her class.
Tough class, but great prof.
Unorganized professor. Really sweet, but not a good teacher. Lecture and lab are all over the place, and confuses the entire class. Puts everything in the grade book late.
Besides her being all over the place in class, her lectures are usually straightforward. She really makes sure you understand material and takes time to explain. Don't buy textbook, study PP. Gives extra credit points. Have a detailed lab notebook to study for lab quizzes. I recommend her class for anyone that has difficulty with science.
DONT TAKE HER!! Her quizzes and exams are difficult to understand and her grade point system is poor. She makes changes last minute to assignments & wont provide extra time so that students can meet her demands. She can be incorrect with info in her lectures, which is extremely poor for an educator. Shes also unavailable during her office hours.
I decided to take her microbio class over the summer and I am legit dying. Her tests are crazy hard and she is not straight forward at all on what we should study. Each lecture is like 70 powerpoint slides. What really pisses me off is she told us to study the bolded parts on her lecture slides but that is not true STUDY EVERYTHING
Shes really smart and knows her material really well. Whenever we have questions shes always willing to answer them during and after the class hours. Exams and quizzes are tough, but she always gives us study guides or at least study points on what we should focus on. If you study that, youll always do well. Having a wonderful experience in Bio2
Definitely had to ask a lot of questions for this class, she was always there to answer and clarify stuff though. She is really approachable and helped me a lot! Tests are hard, but go to her office hours and she can help you.
I think she is nice , smart and a bit silly . i can tell she loves to teach and is clear on lecture . I took her twice first time did not study second time around studying helped a lot . She does not choose your grade , you do so put in the work , take lots of notes and review day and night , you will be fine also try to earn every point possible.
She knows her stuff, she is very smart and funny, very personable. The subject matter is difficult and you have to put some serious time in to learn the material. Her tests are very difficult, she wants you to understand the material, not just memorize words. She is happy to go over stuff and answer questions and will take time to talk to you.
She has a lot to improve on. Her attitude is very careless and lazy. Dates for tests and quizzes will be changed constantly. She does not grade in a timely manner. Don't expect your grades until the class is almost over if you don't bug her. It is possible to do well but you need to be able to learn from the power points. All she does is read them
Professor Calle was amazing, she's very smart and knows what she's talking about. This class is hard so you have to put in the work to get a good grade. Ask questions during the lecture and if you need to reach out to her outside class do. Attendance matters. Book is really is not necessary but when it comes to studying it comes in handy.
I recommend her to anyone who has a hard time with science courses. She's very knowledgeable and is always willing to help.
This semester was online because of covid so I can understand that was probably more difficult for her a s a teacher. However, the class was extremely unorganized and the lab quizzes were very difficult. She asked questions on information that was never taught. She also had terrible time management. You have to put in work if you want an A
Super disorganized from the very beginning, lecture heavy and the lab quizzes were extremely difficult. Exams were never long enough to take and finish all questions. When grades were being put in, she did not respond at all regarding grades that we (as a class) felt were unfair. Would not take her for a class online again.
Rushes through lectures, reads word for word from the PowerPoint without further relations or explanation. Had to teach myself the material and read lots from the textbook. Disorganized. Do not take this class online
I would not recommend her at all! Her lecture PPTs are basically copy and paste from the web, and labs were ALL over the place. Class average for tests were not even passing and lecture tests were timed && there was never enough time to fully complete. She never graded on time. Would not take her for a class online again.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Her lectures and labs are a absolute mess, she will read the slides word for word without giving any detailed explanation of why. Then when you take your tests she will ask questions that were never discussed and never on the slides. Not to mention that her study sessions are a complete waste of time, they do not help at all.
Her lectures are straightforward but her quizzes and tests have questions that she does not go over. It's very frustrating
If you have any self respect for your time, grade, or money just don't enroll in her class. She takes forever to grade assignments and exams. Her quizzes and exams are unnecessarily difficult, and her lectures are so worthless you could go into zoom calls ask questions, actively participate and you will still learn nothing from her. Worst teacher
Tough class overall, she's smart herself, not the best teacher IMO. But is also always there to help, will be lazy with grades and she will mess up on quiz and exam questions. I took the 5 week winter session and the last week was rough. Make sure to participate for the EC and the exams will be curved, with some effort you should get a B.
Do not take her class if you have the option to take another professor. She grades every assignment last minute. Study sessions were not helpful and quizzes/lectures DO NOT MATCH THE MATERIAL GIVEN. She is a very nice person but not a great teacher. She is all over the place and does not answer back to emails.
Just took the Winter Bio class with Prof. Erika and I enjoyed it a lot. Quizzes and exams were nice, but only if you paid attention to her lectures. If you dont, then theyll be hard. Provides extra credit for participation. Helps out a lot and makes the class fun. 2nd time taking one of her courses, shes awesome and will take again.
Professor Erika is very caring and considerate. As long as you communicate to her, you will be fine. If you have questions it is better to ask her during the zoom meeting or make an appointment to personally talk to her. Time management and getting on track of the due dates are very important to pass. I, personally like her and think she is great.
Prof CP is a good teacher, she is accessible outside of class and is easy to talk to. She knows the material and is understanding towards students. There are a lot of assignments and she takes a long time to grade because there are a lot of assignments. Study the powerpoints. You have to put that work in to get an A in this class, not impossible.
Ik the bad reviews seem scary but a high A is manageable it's based on how much you are willing to work for it. There are quizzes every week which can either bump up your grade or lower it but there are also easy hw/class points and the exams are very straightforward. Making time to study is important! She is easy to talk to and understanding.
Class content was not difficult. However, her disorganization (late uploads/gradings, poor spelling/grammar) affected the overall class experience. Very kind & understanding. Biggest advice is to study lecture vids/ppts & to REALLY make sure you take the time to grasp down concepts. Attend her office hours -- it helps! Gotta work for your grade.
Yes, this material is difficult for me but this teacher really cares about us. She answers messages all the time, even on weekends! So, if you take her during the pandemic this is a solid choice if your in person or not. She really works hard for us as students and I'm enjoying myself. Thanks Profe Calle!
OK, so i'm doing miserable at all of her quizzes. Not so good on her tests either. This actually hurts my self esteem and just makes me feel really bad about myself. But oh, well, that's just how it is here at this school. Get used to this feeling for the next like 8 years every day of your life and you will be successful here.
Biology is a difficult subject, but the Professor didnt make it easier. The course needs a teacher that can pass knowledge to students, and not just someone that is knowledgeable about Biology. This is the hardest class I have taken so far. If it is your first time taking a biology course, Ill advise you dont take this Professor.
Expectationknow the material before getting to her class. She sets up all her assignments, this includes quizzes/test/homework/lecture videos, assuming that the student is a cheater and so she makes it entirely difficult to get anything correct. Likes to make her 90% of all questions select all that apply or select those that dont. 10% essay.
Gives out a lot of work for no credit and you are expected to complete it. Says there are miscommunications on account that a lot of people in class are saying they dont understand what she is trying to say. Still does not clarify. Late to responding emails. not available during class hours or after lab completion even though theres xtra time.
She is deceptive by saying there are points in her class that are to cushion the bad grades. She will keep selling this throughout the semester in hopes that her students fall for it and dont withdraw. She is given a performance review and people who withdraw reflects bad on the school. This cushion is not real and she will not reveal the test
When I signed up to take classes at LBCC, I was promised a supportive group of professors. With this Professor, ONLY, I got the run a round.
She will explain the same thing for 30 minutes to still not make herself clear on what she is saying. Captions are not helpful with her and this class is not a good fot for someone who needs additional assistance and is needing captions. She refused to help.
Most of the material covered in lecture is not used for testing material. Teacher will misguide you intentionally and then laugh about it in front of you in class.
One of the worst science classes Ive taken in my life. Shes slow. All the HW/Quizzes/lectures are from her first class she taught. The software makes you go backwards in regards to progression if you get a question wrong. Shes extremely hard to reach and very passive aggressive in her emails. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU WANT TO MAINTAIN YOUR GPA!!!
She is a nice person but does not like to get asked questions at anytime, especially during class. Gives partial credit on exams which is good but cant be certain since she never gives access to the exam after taking it. The class is not properly balanced exams worth 75% of overall grade. LOTS OF HW
Professor is late more than 15 minutes to once a week class meetings. She marks you absent if you dont wait for her.
Notes unclear & although scheduled zoom meetings w/ her was encouraged, the science was not easily comprehended on a question by question basis. For the final and exams/quizzes, she mis-assigned homework used to prepare for it & still included test questions
Although she gives a syllabus, she goes on a second to second decision based on how she is feeling that day. She likes to remark that she had a good relationship with the Dean and she has benefits that other professors dont. Not sure what her intentions are by that when their is a concern in her performance.
Professor is teaching off YouTube videos recorded from 2019. Does not give feedback. Does not reply on zoom or email. Does not explain anything other than, thats on my videos.
Let her know that one of her videos was hard to listen and take notes because of the sound quality itself. Only mentioned anything after she asked about this problem because she said previous classes had complained. She told the class after to watch it again and would not help anymore. She asked to stop asking. It was not helping anyone.
Absolutely awful. Do not take class with her unless you're someone who really LOVES independent learning like a Indiana college student who studies online. Clearly does not care about her students' success and just overall frustrating because she relies so heavily on being the victim. Avoid this professor at all costs if you can.
I signed up expecting a synchronous class, and instead got the opposite. The zoom meetings are mandatory, but even if you go they dont really help with any assignments. The lecture videos take hours to complete, and you are unlikely to retain anything. Shes equally a poor performing professor in person, but online she will give you busy work.
She wants students to turn on the camera to see their desks, government issued ID, 360 degree room exam, and face at the exam. Irony is that the test is open note but she shortened the time. What she would give 2 hours, she gives 1 hour and 10 minutes. Her reasoning to this was because we, LBCC students, are all cheaters.
Laboratory was a joke. She did not go over all techniques or labs assigned. On the final she expected one to know the information. She throws in lab questions into lecture but says theres only one cumulative lab exam at the end. She was very disorganized and dirty. We had to touch ecoli with our hands for example.
It was very scary to work with this teacher. She would not keep her mask on, would touch her nose and drink from her water all while not washing her hands or maintaining social distancing in place. Then she would do labs and all throughout class not wash her hands once. No sanitizer or gloves were used.
She changes the syllabus every day. Hard to come up with a plan on how to tackle the class when this happens.
Professor asked not to reach put to her because of policies and procedures set forth by the college. She would not comment on grades at all or reply back to emails for clarification on assignments.
Says its the colleges fault for not giving her an student assistant, and that is why her students are not successful. A student can be successful from their professors, not tutors and definitely not student assistants. The professor has to put in the time and effort and not delegate this important task to others.
Some questions are essay questions for these: Does not give partial credit on exams/final/midterms. If you dont get the right answer you get zero points. If you dont show original wording and have more than 20% match of the same notes your classmates took, then you get a zero for the whole assignment and she will report you.
Labs are done together as a class to go over data that was reviewed in the lab book and from a bacterial reference book. She does not say words need to be different. By the end of the semester she lets the class know that if there is more than 20% copied information from classmates or pretty much plagiarism, then you get a 0 on the assignment.
Teacher made a hostile environment by putting emphasis to not working together or studying at all together. Her approach was to maintain quiet in her class and only receive information to keep a secret. She made it a competitive and intense environment. Made it hard to even approach anyone in the class.
This is all of her words: She has a habit of telling her husband what is going on in her class. Her husband had to tell her to be nice to her class and she agreed with her husband once, ONCE only.
Teacher is relentless. Is out to have students fail with test she assures no one will pass. Belittles class by telling us that she doesnt know why we are having such a problem and its only THAT class I am in and no one else has ever failed OR RECEIVED ANYTHING LOWER THAN AN A.
Teacher is so disrespectful and not attentive to her current classes/work assignments. She is in class and stops lecture and all work students are doing to show students she is testing her new mic and hoping it helps in the spring. Makes me feel like I was used to collect money only for LBCC course revenue.
She is not nice enough of a person. She will laugh at you in front of the class if you make a mistake. She has a short temper when the class does not stop talking. Does not like to get asked questions after class. Gives NO partial credit on exams. The class is not properly balanced exams worth 75% of overall grade. LOTS OF non credit HW
Professor asked not to reach out to her because of policies and procedures set forth by the college. She would not comment on grades at all or reply back to emails for clarification on assignments. She did not fix canvas grades at all and went off whatever she felt like was there was sufficient enough to produce a grade for her job to be done.
Teacher made an announcement that if there are any study groups, this will be considered cheating and she will bring all possible punishments with her reach and outside of her reach as a result. She said she will make sure this is done to the student who chose to work with others instead of alone.
Teacher will use fear and intimidation for students to not complain to the school about her.
This professor is extremely irresponsible and does not know what she is doing. She made numerous errors in the exams, stuttered during her lectures, and never gave clear answers to questions. She even ended class an hour early one day and said I know this material is hard keep studying instead of teaching the rest of the class. Dont take her!!!!
Professor didnt post grades in a timely manner and I was not able to take a registered class as a result and asked to leave from another. Grades were posted after next semester started. She delayed my educational plan.
Avoid her at all costs!!! She will never respond to your questions on Canvas or via email. She will NEVER give a definitive answer for Clicker questions or will say that any answer COULD be possible given certain vague circumstances. We had to stop the midterm and final multiple times during the test due the copious amount of errors.
I got a decent grade in her class but it had nothing to do with her. If anything she makes like harder for everyone. She never knew how to communicate effectively. She was late 98% of the time. She has no sense of Covid precautions. Disorganized to the point she doesnt even know what day it is, where her papers are at and didnt charge her laptop.
I had to take this class because of school requirement. I have to basically teach myself the lectures because she cannot explain topics well enough. Her slides are often un-readable, and she would suddenly bring up concepts that are not covered and ask questions on them. She seems nice, but I would not recommend taking her for any course.
I would not recommend her even if you like this subject. Her lectures and labs are ALL over the place. Our class average for test are not even passing. Teaching is not her strong suit. She just reads off her INCOMPLETE power points, sometimes I feel like I could teach the class. She never grades anything on time, very careless.
Does not know how to get through to students. She needs more training and guidance from the school. She is very unorganized and confusing, and really doesnt care about your grade. There is so much to do in this class and usually I am an A student and am struggling to get a C. If your major is nursing stay away
Nursing students beware! If needing a grade for this course dont take this course. Give a different teacher a chance. She does not do her work. Only there for her pay check.
Professor has no respect for students schedule. She cares only for her own schedule. She expects you to dedicate your life to only her, inclusive to ONLY her emergencies. She has these almost every day.
She's got a major attitude! She's so mean the first day to scare everyone but she lightens up. She is kinda vague in her lectures and makes you print them to show her for no credit. The modules are pretty involved (if you dont answer the questions correctly or due it the same day it is assigned you get 0).Gives quizes daily so go to class everyday.
In depth pop quizzes given on material covered the same day of lecture. Its rigged to make you fail.
First day with her, shes already saying that her class will be failing because its better to take her class in person instead of online or hybrid. Its her way to defend her lack of professionalism and knowledge.
Not your cup a tea difficult to work with
Sets overly-high standards for intro level Freshman class. Did not explain the material used in the course at all, more or less "figure it out as you go." Prepare to spend all your nights and weekends working on rediculously complex assignments that dont reflect what is in the test/quizzes/lab-papers.
Teacher provides own notes (old PowerPoints) and YouTube videos with captions for DSPS students. It was hard to follow along and when I asked her for help she said she had already given it to me. The videos dont match the words. She is confused on what she is saying and it shows on the videos.
Most of her lectures are online. You will show up in person for class to be told to watch the videos. Instead, class is a waste of time with her talking about irrelevant material.
Her lecture videos are hard to follow. She cant seem to phrase her own lecture, rephrase what she just said, let alone rephrase material pertinent to the class and her test.
She is not very good at engaging people, and I felt uncomfortable participating in the class. She was very hard to approach, had limited to no knowledge, and confusing to listen to.
Really passive aggressive and condescending, not willing to understand, or show a sincere knowledge of the topic. tough grader.
If you get COVID, you arent allowed to come to class and she wont let you make up the work. Says its your own fault and those are the consequences but you can always drop with a W.
Avoid her at all costs!!! She and the TA will never respond to your questions on Canvas or via email. She will NEVER give a definitive answer for Clicker questions or will say that any answer COULD be possible given certain vague circumstances. We had to stop the midterm and final multiple times during the test due the copious amount of errors.
Not available, not easy to understand or good at explaining. Complete opposite of enthusiastic and bothered about all the Mayer she has to lecture on.
I feel she did not do a good job facilitating discussions. She does not summarize or expand on ideas we shared, and she did not help make everyones comments flow cohesively.
Hoards knowledge to herself and passionate in student failure. She did not engage me throughout the semester because of old material used as new. She is also unable to keep up or fails to put effort into new material.
She makes me want to quit school and she supported it when I told her. She said to me its not meant to be for me. LBCC needs to help her be a better teacher or fire her if they wont help her growth as a person which Ill help her grow as a professor.
Does not relates/connect well with studentsprovides closed hostile environment for no discussion; did not appreciate and did not like the time and effort put in by her to respond to our papers. There was absolutely no feedback from her and you are not allowed to see the results except for a letter grade.
No classroom discussions and and absolutely no thought provoking questions; did not give enough time to complete work because she changes the syllabus daily.
Every time we met to discuss my assignments she would just cry for the duration of our meeting, and then tell me I could let myself out.
If you have any interest in learning something don't take this class.
Professor is bummed out.1st day already grumbling bout how much she hates teaching, how much she would like2be teaching@better college,&how teaching is waste of her time(b/c research is where it's @),don't expect things2get any better as the course progresses.Rule of thumb:Bummed out2start gets more&more bummed out, exponentially,as the weeks drag on
Beware of this professor. She will go directly to the Dean and programs you are attempting to apply to. She will give bad recommendations even though no request for her opinion was made. Avoid this professor. Go to a different school.
Professor does not accept questions in class and does not make herself available for student hours.
There is no grade transparency. Teacher changes syllabus daily.
All submitted material is not given back because she says we "are all cheaters." Final grades are given two weeks after end of semester.
Beware! She has very heavy lectures and heavy quizzes! Was very unorganized in what she taught and seems to get confused on her own work. You could study her guides but quizzes and exams will be completely opposite.
Very unaccommodating, inconsiderate, and brushes off students who need help on homework. Changed to closed notes exam last minute.
her lectures are incomprehensible, and she tries to make all the homework and exams as hard as possible
SPRING SEMESTER/HYBRID FORMAT/IN CLASS. Professor is SMART, CONFUSING SOMETIMES. EXAMS are HARD, HARDER if you don't do the work. Heres what I did to get my grade! I LISTENED to her lectures MULTIPLE TIMES (KEY). DO all the assignments and pay attention to her in class lectures (KEY). Study, study, study, study. A is possible! Good luck! WARNING!
unfortunately she is the only one teaches this course.
She turns what is an easy class into the most miserable experience of your academic career. She hates her job and it shows in how she approaches students. Not as friends and future colleagues, but as enemies. She is an awful teacher.
Professor literally uploaded no lectures, only notes & held no asynchronous meetings. Notes unclear & although scheduled zoom meetings w/ her was encouraged, the material was not easily comprehended on a question by question basis. For the final, she mis-assigned homework used to prepare for it & still included test questions
Very poor teaching skills. If you have a question, she will make you answer it an move on.
Late to class every session, rushes through lecture, ends class early, does not have office hours.
Messy&difficult2understand.HW is tedious&marks off whole points w/ no partial credit given.Workbooks that she gives out in class really difficult even w/ notes. All work submitted has to be written in own words including definitions&cannot repeat or rephrase concept. Will give no credit & makes threats to students that she will report for plagiarism
Makes the class way to difficult for what it is. I took the lab with her and compared to all the other professors she by far was the most difficult. There is ABSOLUTELY no breaks as far as grading goes. No matter what your situation is she is strictly by the book in every aspect.
Very poor. The only reason I have decent grade is because I took this class in HS. She is very unclear. She has been behind since day 1 and has rushed everything to make up for it. The tests are confusing and tricky. Like comment below, the first test she curved and the class avg was still a D. And she gets frustrated as US for it. Its unbelievable
Don't recommend her at all. She was not able to explain any concepts clearly. I'm usually great in my classes and she made it the hardest class i've ever taken.
I really disliked this teacher. class was hard enough without her. She just made it worse. She tries to help but is hard to understand. I would avoid this teacher if you can!!!
If you have a choice, don't take Erika Calle. She is a difficult professor to start with, and is very hard to get help from when you need it. I've seen her laugh at people who have asked questions in class, and she was hard to talk to.
She simply doesn't add any depth to the class and makes the book and homework into the main source of knowledge. Listening in class only confuses more.
Hard to understand, makes easy concepts difficult, and just sucks overall.
Very hard to understand, 2 to 3 words out of 2 sentences. Lecture is useless, doesn't seem to know how to teach the material and would get frustrated if she had to explain a problem twice. Ex problems done in class have nothing to do with HW or tests, at one point asked if there could be more EX done that actually we would see and she said no.
Lecture is pointless, she just doing example problems in the book. Tests are odd.
This class would have been extremely easy had Erika Calle been capable of communicating. The complications with her seemed evident when half the class dropped mid-semester due to failing. Personally I am all for a diverse ethnic population of teachers, but if they can't teach or communicate how is anyone supposed to learn anything?
I am actually taking her at CSULB for BIOL 208 lab but wanted to write this as a warning to all CSULB students. Do NOT take Erika. Consistently late, poor communication, rarely responds to emails. Does not understand the course content well. An A in lab with Erika is still possible, just be prepared to put in extra work.
Her lectures are too heavy, her exams are too heavy. She does the most. Even if I was doing a professional exam, I won't be stressed half the way that class stressed me. And she would set her exams for every 7 lectures! Really? Who's going to remember?
Professor Erika genuinely cares about her students! She is supportive & encouraging! It was a pleasure taking micro with her and I can't say the class is easy. It's not. But to do well in the class, YOU must put the time into reviewing the material and complete the work accordingly. She seeks growth and provides opportunities for improvement!
A very good scientist and teacher. She explained every items very reasonably. When students were preparing in physiology, her lecture must be very helpful. Microbiology itself is very hard science. Her class is not limited only for medical person. Lecture is enough to feel what is the Microbiology. To identify unknown microbes is very interesting.
Professor Erika is very supportive throughout this 5-week microbiology course. She provides a lot of extra credit and supplemental resources to guide your learning. She is personable, approachable, and provides excellent guidance to questions. Has background in lab research, so knows what she is teaching, good at it, and passionate about her work.
Professor Erika Calle-Poppe is a phenomenal professor. Very passionate about her subject matter. I honestly learned so much. Micro is hard period, she is approachable, caring, and kind. She even stays after lab and is supportive when needed. Of course, you also have to do your part study. She deserves all the love and recognition.
Poppe gives many tries to get good scores on work and quizzes. Requires that you attend class and attempt the assignment; doesn't have to be complete or correct. Just turn something in to show, she will offer you another opportunity. If you go to any extra meetings, you can get even more opportunitys. She tells students that failure isn't the end.
Professor Calle-Poppe is the only professor I ever had that grades based on mastery of the material rather than on a points based system. She really wants to make sure you understand the material and does not punish you for being wrong the first time. She gives several opportunities to retake tests and you only need 80% on each to get an A.
Professor is energetic, passionate and nice. The grading points for exams and assignments are fair for a science course. But, Professor is disorganized and gives so much work she cannot keep up with her own grading. You will be stressed all semester not knowing your grade until after semester is done. If you want to be stressed I do not recommend.
Class is do able but tough and a lot of work. Grading is the worst I've seen from a professor. Grading is so slow you will be stressed. Professor takes on too much she cannot handle it all and will forgot what she mention to class and say it was mis-communication or a rumor. Please take as last resort, in denial and not understanding.
Enrolled into this class last minute for credits to start with takes forever to grade, never got feedback on my results until the end of the semester, get ready to read because the exams were random topics, learned more from the Pearson packets than actual lecture, no lab feedbacks unless you ask her, hyper focuses on a topic for too long
The WORST professor I've ever had. LBCC needs to put her through an inspection, heres why...she did not grade ANYTHING until the semester ended, which is right now. She put information on exams that we never went over. She will not directly answer questions. Also she gives zero feedback on what we missed on exams. She DOES NOT WANT US TO SUCCEED.
Choose any other professor. This professor is super tough on grading labs. She doesn't really teach and is mean when you ask questions during lab. Lab is super independent she will not give u the correct results and her tests are super hard no matter how much you study. She is also not approachable. She is a good scientist just a horrible teacher.
The professor is passionate and approachable, but the grading and course organization can be a bit of a mess. Attending class and using tools like unstuck ai for study prep are key to doing well. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
May be a bit unorganized, but keeps the subject fun and interesting. Be prepared to do a lot of homework on Pearson Plus. If you do your in-class assignments and labs, you will pass. Try not to miss a day in class; there is a lot to cover and you will fall behind if you do. You can take the quiz/test to boost up your grade by using tokens.
Professor Calle's class had a lot of material, which could be confusing at times, but she was kind and understanding. She gave extra credit, let us retake two exams, and allowed quiz redos or homework for a perfect score. Her lectures matched the exams, making studying easier. Labs included a final and an unknown project. I'd recommend her class!
I can see why people gave her low reviews but 1/5 is unfair. She can be a bit disorganized but she is fair and understanding. Let's you do extra credit and uses a mastery system. She grades exams in a timely manner. Honestly, you're in college too. You want a good grade, put in the work. Stop expecting things to be handed to you.
I'm a mom of 2, work, and attended LBCC full-time this class is 100% manageable if you don't procrastinate. She offers quiz/exam retakes, makeup work, and extra credit “tokens.” Labs are hands-on, and attendance matters. She's supportive, engaging, and truly cares. Easily one of the best professors I've had. Highly recommend!
Professora Calle-Poppe class was interesting to me at first. As a nursing major I was not sold on the fact that microbiology was really necessary as a prerequisite, but as time went on in her class I learned to true importance of microbiology and how our everyday lives are effected by this amazing field of study. Professora Calle made this happen!!
Prof. Erika is a fantastic professor! DO NOT EVEN BELIEVE THE 1.0 SCORES that pulled down her rating on here. She made microbiology fun, interesting, and useful for future healthcare workers. She is sweet and kind. Any college course requires time and effort! BABIES want their milk bottles given to them. So take Prof.Calle, you will ENJOY her BIO2.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Take her! Click ENROLL fast! Or else you will whine like those students who are STRATEGIC SLACKERS - opting for shortcuts, copying, or relying on others, AND would rather badmouth, and rate low, such a fantastic and lovely professor like Prof.Erika. Only wimps would say she is terrible. At this point, y'all should know this.
Hey, you, who rated this professor very low. It's not the professor's fault you mistook academia for a group hug. Get over it! I have seen more drive in a parked car!
Some people mistake their own laziness for a teacher's failure. Tragic, really. So get it together, and enroll in BIO2 with Prof.Erika Poppe, and learn how to think critically, like how medical professionals should. She is THE most caring professor, ever. And please don't slack off and complain that you got too many pages of Pearson+ to do.
Poor souls. Imagine being so allergic to effort that you blame the professor for your own indifference and incompetence. (sighs)
I dare say Professor Calle would've had a higher rating if she also handed out milk, colouring books and nap time. :-D
I'm sure the professor will recover from the trauma of being disliked by the unteachable.
Great professor! 80% is converted to 100%. Who doesn't want that? Also, she offers Re-dos on quizzes you did not do good at. Very highly recommended.
I like that the BIO2 class with her has a supplemental instructor who can help with any questions about the lecture. The professor was also lenient with attendance (I also work full-time), but if you miss class, you will miss quite a bit too. So, attend class as much as you can. She has lecture slides open for review at Canvas so they are helpful.
The lab part is fun. The unknown project was enjoyable, like playing Dexter's Laboratory in real life. Lectures are a little heavy but manageable. Her quizzes are tricky questions, which means you will practice a lot of critical thinking, which I liked. Easy A, if you put in the effort. Just like anything else in life.
This professor is brilliant, passionate, and genuinely wants students to learn, not just pass. Unfortunately, those unwilling to meet basic expectations often mistake high standards for poor teaching. If you're ready to put in the work, you'll leave smarter and prepared. Ignore the low ratings—they say more about the students than the science.
Warning: This professor will NOT spoon-feed you answers or give you an A just for showing up. Tragic, I know. But if you actually pay attention (crazy concept), you'll realize she is brilliant, fair, and hilarious in a science-nerd kind of way. The low ratings? Likely from students who thought ‘microbiology' meant microwaving leftovers.
Some students tanked their own grade and acted like it was a Shakespearean tragedy. Spoiler: the villain was their own work ethic, NOT the professor. She works with her students with sincerity and kindness. She even accepts late work. So book Professor Calle-Poppe and run away from unhelpful, lazy groupmates.
Reading the bad reviews is like hearing the kid in a group project complain that the professor didn't ‘explain enough'—while they contributed nothing but DNA to the attendance sheet. So take Prof.Erika and enjoy her class like I did!
I am a mother of two, and I also work at a hospital, which means my time is limited for actually studying my courses. But Prof.Erika is workable on deadlines and her lectures are available to see in Canvas, and they show up at the quizzes and exam. So I am grateful for her understanding and I recommend this professor very highly.
If you're mature enough to handle tough material, a smart professor, and being held accountable—this class will be one of your favorites. If not, leave your tantrum with the rest of the teething toddlers in the reviews.
Some people really bomb the course and then act like the professor personally targeted their vibes. Sweetheart, you just didn't study. Take Prof.Calle and learn microbiology in very interesting ways and become more ready for a career in healthcare.
No textbooks were required, but a Pearson subscription is mandatory. You are graded on videos completely watched and worksheets filled out and passed in Canvas. Also, a Cerego subscription is required. It could be a lot of pages, but split the work over several days, and it is manageable. She does quizzes and exams pretty easy too. I recommend her.
This professor runs the kind of class where the slackers get exposed. The real test? You can't hide behind the smart kid. You have to earn it. Just take the time to sit and go over her lecture sheets and truly understand the bacteria and viruses, and you will get an A+.
She is by far the most caring professor I have ever had. She is lenient on deadlines which helps people who have multiple majors in one sem. She will teach you how and what to write in the lab work properly so you won't get lost. I have a creative side so I write more than needed but she appreciated it and I got encouraging feedback all the time.
I loved her class, but I just do not like that she could be a little disorganized. But she works it out, and everything falls into place at the right time. Take her if you are aiming for real actual learning like not just for "grades". I enjoyed her class overall. She guides well and the lectures are fun too
Gives extra credit. Approachable and willing to explain things again if you get lost at some point. Makes sure everybody understands her lectures. There are interactive games that will show up on the quizzes and exams. For a 5-unit class this was an easy A for me bec a 80 is 100 in record. Get her!
This professor gives real lectures, not bedtime stories. The real test? Showing up, staying awake, and not Googling 'what is a cell' mid-semester.
Some students didn't study all semester but had the audacity to rate the professor low—because apparently, being unprepared is now the teacher's fault. Prof. Erika will give you everything: second chances, extended deadlines, ACTUAL answers on the quizzes. You will do really good with her class.
lecture is vital for this class so is studying on your own time. professor is very nice and pretty funny. she allows redos on exams and multiple quizzes work is only hard if you don't put in the time to study. would take this professor again she was a breathe of fresh air!
Don't be misled by the low ratings — this professor is excellent! The negative reviews are clearly from students who didn't attend class, didn't study, and expected to be spoon-fed answers. This is a college-level science course — it's supposed to be challenging.
The professor explains concepts clearly, is passionate about the subject, and genuinely cares about student learning. Lectures are engaging, PowerPoints are posted online, and questions are always welcome. If you actually put in the effort, go to class, and review the material, you'll not only do well, but you'll actually learn, which is the point.
People rated low because they failed, after not trying, and are just being bitter. Don't let them scare you off. This professor deserves way more respect than the lazy reviews are giving.
This is one of the rare professors who knows their stuff and tries to make it make sense for students. Don't skip out on this class just because some bitter students couldn't be bothered to try.
Prof. Calle is an experienced instructor. She treats 80% of correct answers as mastery. lenient on attendance as long as assignments are submitted. Quizzes are easy. Lab was so much fun and my inner nerd came out and I just had fun in this class. Take her.
I love Eika Calle -Poppe , she is a very caring teacher and get along with every student. she treated us as her friends than as students.
The professor seems to be favored over others. Attendance do not appear to matter, since students who attend every class are not treated differently. Grades are not updated until the end of the semester, leaving students unsure of their progress.
End of Sem- Student lab coursework left ungraded. Big Unknown Project that took weeks of hard work - also left ungraded. Won't take inquiries about such concerns.
This professor is very knowledgeable and explains concepts in a clear, organized way. Lectures are structured, and complex material is broken down so it is easier to understand. Expectations are clearly communicated, and the course stays aligned with the learning objectives. Overall, the teaching style supports student understanding and success.
