Hard class, but she provides help if needed. Tests are super hard. :o
The actual course material is difficult but she tries to make it understandable. She's young and relatable. Don't ever use book unless you want to look something up. Homework is super easy and boosts your grade. Doesn't ever take attendance but you don't want to miss lecture. She gives you the outline of the lecture online so you can print it out.
A very smart&awesom professor! This course was a good challenge. I felt like I conquered at the end.lol. Advice: STUDY the textbook preferably Before class!Participate!Do the hwk diligently! The online study guide helped me ALOT. You can access it by using the code on the front page of the textbook. Be sure the book that you buy has an unused code.
Easy class for most part. Print outline before class for notes, homework is easy boost to grade. Good professor overall attendance isnt mandatory but she gives quizzes but announces when they will be during class. 2 exams and a final, exams are easy and come straight from her practice exams
The best professor for a difficult subject. Very available to students and outlines and teaches what you need to know. HW and quizzes every class help boost your grade for easy points. Tests come exactly from review problems.
This class is very basic and straightforward. She is clear with what she expects from you and has printed outlines of every chapter needed in the class. Tests come straight from notes. Paying attention equals good grades.
I loved her class, I found her examples helpful and her notes were clear and pretty straightforward. Going to her lectures were definitely a big help. I personally liked the way she taught, it's sometimes hard to stay focused when the material can get technical, but I think she does a good job of telling you what you need to know
While you can get an A with studying, her lectures are all over the place and she easily gets sidetracked making things hard to follow. Has quizzes and in class assignments so attendance is a must. Her tests are a bit tricky, but do-able. Using the textbook and online homework was the key for me
She gives you a lot of notes, sometimes a lot of information crammed into small amounts of time. Seeing her after hours wasn't helpful because she has multiple students at once. She once forgot to make hw available on MEL then still only gave us 24 hrs to complete. Passable but not easy
This class is doable but you MUST pay attention. She teaches this subject well and makes you understand.
I love her and I think this class is extremely easy. I take notes in class, read the chapters, and do the MEL online assignments. I have an A in this class and I don't even study for tests. Her lectures are very clear and she is very willing to help you with anything. She makes a difficult subject easy. Definitely recommend taking her!
Very knowledgable and getting an A is very attainable. Never really used the textbook. I would suggest getting the ProCopy packet. Attendance is not mandatory but there are in class assignment you could miss. Overall she is a great instructor.
Very bad teacher. I did not learn anything in class. All I learned was from studying myself. all she did in class was look at her notebook were she had her notes and write them in the blackboard in a handwriting that I could not understand.she is not brilliant. she is mediocre and not knowledgable. Not a fair grader and does not accept her mistakes
Definitely makes economics understandable for everyone, however class attendance recommended due to announcements and in-class assignments. Book really only necessary for further clarity (if needed) and lecture book is available for purchase (recommended). All test are fair with reasonable grading policy (two options).
Go to class, buy pro-copy notes, and study the sample exams and you'll be fine. She was knowledgeable and taught in an easy to understand way.
Would certainly recommend her for Microeconomics. I recommend that you attend class as it is very helpful for understanding the material and be sure to go to office hours if your confused. She is very nice and certainly helpful! Loved the class and got an A with a decent amount of work.
This is a introductory microeconomics class. The professor is clear in her lectures. She say's class attendance is not mandatory but it is because she gives out in class assignments sporadically that affect your participation grade. You have 3 quizzes and a comprehensive final. Overall this class is okay. If you study you will do fine.
Must go to class becuase she randomly gives group assignmetns. Weekly online HW is easy. First 2 test are fairly simple but the final is HARD. I got a B on the final but studied a lot. She is a good teacher and presents the material in a simple way. I would take her again.
Knows a lot about thee subject, she is very informative and involved with the class. Has 5 pop quizzes, in which she lets you know about the week before if you attend class, even though it is not mandatory. Gives a lot of extra credit for those who participate in class. Very nice professor and diligent and willing to helping you.
Decent professor. Talks extremely fast in class and spent most of my time in class attempting to keep up with her diagrams.
This class is going to be hard in general, no matter who you take it with. I loved this professor because she kept the class interesting and made her tests fair and provides good amount of extra credit. There are no surprises with her class. She outlines exactly what is expected from you. Now all you have to do is put in the work. That's it.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CAN AVOID! Took Macro with another professor and got an A, took Micro with Martinez and didn't even pass given the same effort. She weights half your grade on the Final Exam then claims she is "fair" at grading. Problem is one bad test day, in this case the Final Exam, will fail you. Professor doesn't care if you pass or fail..
Never needed help and barely studied and ended up with a good grade. I did go to every lecture and bought her Pro-copy notes as well.
Great professor. You don't need to buy a textboom because she has her Note's Book at Pro-Copy, which is what she uses in lecture. Just follow along and write what she writes where she writes it. If you need help she'll gladly help in office hours, unless you miss class or just didn't bother to write anything down.
Tough subject to master but she's a very easy grader. Just do the homeworks, read the book (the chapters are really short) and go to class and you shouldn't have any problem getting an A. I actually missed about 5 classes and still pulled an A without much extra effort.
Some of the things she goes over in class can be confusing but if you make the effort you should get and A. Yes the final is worth 50% of your grade but if you do worse on the final than your other 2 exams she makes it only 25%. Good prof. a lot of people skip in the latter part of the semester so they say she is very hard. Go to class and succeed.
Dr. Martinez really knows what she is teaching and is usually very clear in her lectures. Although she can be slightly condescending at times, she usually answers all questions from students before continuing. Exams are somewhat difficult, but not nearly as hard as the homework. I'm planning on taking her for Labor Econ.
Erika is a sass master! I love her lectures and the fact that she has two grading styles and whichever is higher for the individual student is the one used for them. Highly recommend taking Erika.
If you want an A or B in the class, don't bother.
Is not a no-study class but her class are definitely worth it, specially if you are an econ major
Dr. Martinez is an amazing teacher. She explains everything clearly, but is very patient when students have lots of questions. She is very fair at grading and offers several extra credit opportunities. She uses a detailed workbook that I found very helpful. Each lecture is important, though, so don't skip too much. Do the work and you'll pass.
You have homework for every section, five pop quizzes that she'll announce the class beforehand, and 3 tests( 2 midterms and a final). She is a great instructor, but Microeconomics is an easy subject which you'll be fine studying on your own. So if you're good at it, skip class and you'll pass. If you're not, go to class and you'll pass. Simple.
If you've ever watched How To Get Away With Murder, she is the real-life Annalise Keating. She seems intimidating, but she is an amazing professor. She knows how to relate the content to the real world and makes it quite interesting. For exams/quizzes, study the MEL homework & lecture notes. It's pure logic. Walk in with your brain, you'll be fine.
Wasn't a bad class but I didn't think she explained material very well. She gives practice tests online before actual tests and as long as you do those and study that material, you will do fine on the actual exams. Only reason I knew half of the material was because I took macro the semester before
Amazing professor explains things very well, the class will be easy if you took macro already but otherwise you might struggle with the material like I did but she is very willing to help you understand concepts and her study guides are pretty close to what is on her exams.
She is an alright professor, but is very rude when replying to emails or when you need help. She gave an extra credit assignment and I got a good grade on it, but it didn't raise my grade at all, so I emailed her. She responded with a very lengthy email telling me I felt entitled and deserving of a 100% and that not everyone gets perfect grades.
Class was extremely easy. That's because I really like her teaching style. Got 102, 100 and 98 on the exams. Just attend class and you should be good.
She is a great teacher for economics! She explains everything so easily and has an awesome teaching technique. She is also very helpful in her office hours. She offers tons of extra credit and opportunities to not fail. Highly recommend.
She is awesome!! Economics is not easy but she makes the class a piece of cake. Quizzes almost after every chapter. Makes some demonstrations about the topics. Gives extra credits. 3 exams and hw through myeconlab. Easy class if you attend and pay attention.
She is rude and sassy. She can be crabby when you ask a question in class. Her procopy is terrible and her lectures are not detailed. she always says if you write only what i write then you are not taking good notes. Her quizzes are passable if you do the homework. She gives extra credit to those that participate in class.
Dr. Martinez has very little compassion for her students. treated us like her employees not students. Micro isn't that hard of a class, so you can actually study for it on your own. However, at some point during the semester you gonna have to deal with Dr. Martinez's attitude, unfortunately.
As a teacher, Dr. Martinez was ok . However, She lacks communication and public speaking skills. she wasn't comfortable facing her students and get this out as attitude when answering a question or stop side conversations in classroom. Plus her voice was never projected enough for a big classroom
Her exams are really hard!! Sample tests look nothing like real ones.
She does make you work for it and YOU MUST WRITE DOWN WHAT SHE SAYS. People often whine about her but she's very accessible and while she may not look caring she has a lot of insightful information. I have over 100% because of all the extra credit. I didn't buy the textbook, if you go to class then you can learn. Micro is all about REVIEWING!
Talks so fast in lecture, you cant even catch up to take notes. Sometimes records lecture which can be helpful.
I think Dr. Martinez is an amazing professor I will be taking her again next semester for Intermediate price theory. She obviously knows her stuff, doesn't continue if you have question, she explains everything very simply. The course load is a lot to fit into one semester so be prepared to have lengthy lectures, easy A if you love economics.
Makes you work for your grade, but she offers a lot of extra credit opportunities &drops a lot of HW assignments. She explains everything very well and makes the topic easily understandable. HW, quizzes&tests are all the same level of difficulty. At times she can be condescending to student who ask very simple questions, such as definitions.
Get ready to take a lot of notes in her lectures, she's also okay with recordings if you need to do that. I would definitely recommend her as a professor to have.
Amazing professor. Made the material super understandable and accessible. There are two midterms and one final (worth 50% of your grade) and homework every week. Overall, it doesn't take much time. She's slightly unapproachable and takes no bs, but again, an excellent teacher. I highly recommend her.
Great professor! The class isn't mandatory but Dr. Martinez definitely rewards you for going and you learn a lot. Explains everything in great detail, and puts information in simplest terms.
Good teacher. Had her for intermediate price theory. The class was confusing at times but Dr. Martinez was good at clearing things up. HW isn't overwhelming, and the grading is fair.
Econometrics should be required before you take this class. I have an A with 2 weeks left. This class has a gargantuan amount of busy work, difficult weekly required readings, mandatory proof of notes, every week the class sits in a big circle to discuss the required readings. Group presentations not fun at all. Prof is brilliant but dont take!
Very accelerated class for Advanced Price Theory. The first exam is over 7 homework assignments which spans multiple chapters (around 14). The average for the first exam was an F+ (a curve was given to help cushion this grade), but the class gets much easier after this first speed bump! Just stick with it, pay attention in class, and do your best!
Bad professor. Forgets that students take classes other than hers. The homework load is ridiculous, she makes the class do homework pre reqs to unlock the homework assignments. In class she has times where she is nice, but other times she is condescending and rude. Do not recommend this professor.
Not nice and condescending. Asked her if i could get tutoring. She said "you could go to office hours but you can't go in there and be like 'reteach me everything' " . OK, rude. Went there, and left after 10 minutes because they weren't helpful. I only took this class for the Gen Ed requirement, but I really wished I took a different class.
She gave us all assigned seating (in a large lecture hall, mind you), waits silently for the auditorium to be quiet like teachers to in elementary school yet says nothing. Crazy difficult subject, but she does do great and fun visuals sometimes. Other than that I found her class tedious and I found her annoying
Her lectures are very helpful and she goes through everything in depth. She offers a lot of extra credit that is sometimes fun demonstrations in class. Sometimes she can be a little strict but it's understandable when you teach a giant lecture. If you study and go to class you'll pass!
She is very intimidating, however, if you go to lectures, you should be fine. She gives extra credit opportunities and the assigned seats helps with participation points. She does not go into much details about topics. Exams are not terribly hard.
Dr. Martinez is a great prof, but her homework, quizzes, and test can be difficult if you don't know what you're doing. There's a lot of extra credit opportunities, but the GEA paper is time consuming so get ready for that. The TA's are helpful too, and honestly Dr. Martinez was the only prof of mine to transition well to online class during Corona
Dr. Martinez is unprofessional and lacks communication skills. She doesn't care for her students and really wants to make everyone else's life way harder. It would be a little acceptable if her lectures were amazing, but they aren't. Her lectures are confusing and VERY STRESSFUL . She kind of misuse her power.
Course is relatively work heavy. 1 quiz a week but only 5% of your grade, and she lets you drop the worst 4 quiz scores. Midterms and final count for the majority of your grade. If you make an effort to actually understand the material you'll be fine.
Thankfully Microecon isnt inherently difficult. Her lectures are disorganized, hard to follow, and do not give the information needed to learn, the only reason I passed was the textbook. She also doesnt care much about students and puts barely any effort in the class. She made this entire course miserable all the way through, worst prof I have had.
Don't take this class unless it's required for your major. It's not an easy subject. The class was asynchronous, but she posts lecture videos. The case study (GenEd req) is difficult and we weren't given clear feedback on the rough draft. You need a great understanding of econ to do well. Read the textbook; the exam material comes from it.
Please do not take her, I had her for Micro Econ and she is insanely disorganized and her class structure is atrocious. 2 Midterms, A paper and the final make up 80% of your grade in the class so screw one of them up and you are done. Her lectures are useless and are usually less than 15 minutes and have nothing to do with the quizzes
This class sucks. Her lectures are very short videos, even though this class was supposed to be live lecture, and they have no information related to any quiz or exam she assigns. No help on GenEd assignment, too much homework, grading structure is weird, class organization is nonexistent. Do no take her for Microecon, you will be miserable.
MicroEcon- The worst professor I have ever had. Class structure was horrendous, 5 items make up 80% of your final grade. Lecture and quizzes are not even close to each other so you're going to have to learn from the textbook purely. You need a 94 to have an A in the class which is extremely unfair. Sign up for this class if you love anxiety
80% of your grade is based on a final and a paper... which is great if you do them like what she wanted... but I don't know what she wanted. This professor made a mistake so we were allowed 2 tries for the FINAL, but it was bloody hard. I don't know my grade for my paper yet so I don't know my final grade. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. ITS A NIGHTMARE!
If you have to take ECO2023, I suggest another teacher. This class was made unnecessarily hard with the way it is structured and how it's weighted. She is not lenient at all and seems to not care for her students. She also doesn't stick to her own deadlines of releasing grades for tests or essays. If you have her for Spring semester just drop her.
She was easily the worst professor I've ever had. I have gotten an A or A+ in every single other course I have taken but for some reason I couldn't even get a B here. Your entire grade is determined by a paper and a final exam and they are HARD. Her lectures don't correlate with the exams and her exam prep is awful. I would not recommend to anyone.
Because of everything going on, last minute decision was made that all lectures were going to be pre-recorded besides live and every single video was so fast without any thorough explanation given. Grade relies on 9 page paper and three exams but theres still many other meaningless assignments and busywork. Luckily microecons not insane, but man.
She made the class so much harder than it needed to be, never actually spoke to us live, and only had confusing pre-recorded "lectures" that were really just her solving problems. She didn't teach anything and there was no guidance or direction in the class just a lot of homework, papers, and tests with a confusing layout and grading system.
The tests and quizzes are difficult, feedback is hard to interpret, and the final paper and exam are worth a huge portion of your grade. Only take this class with her if you are willing to learn on your own. Read the textbook and take your own notes as the lecture notes are not helpful for the tests or quizzes.
She is not helpful. When she makes mistakes she will not fix them willingly. Does not care about her students. If you are confident if Econ and can learn everything on your own you will be okay. Everything is from the book her lectures are a waste of time and if you email her you have a 50/50 of hearing back
The lectures and her guided notes were useless. All I did was cram the chapter review at the end of each chapter in the textbook. As for the gen-ed assignment about writing the paper, the length requirement was ridiculous (7pgs min), and it was hard to write so much about it. If you work you can pass, but I wouldn't recommend her.
Dr Martinez is the worst teacher you'll have at USF. She only cares about herself and not about the student. Her tests and quizzes don't correlate and if you want to pass her class you must focus your attention of the GEA paper. The GEA paper was 7 pages long and requires you have the book open when your writing it. Don't take Erika's class.
I took this class online because of covid and her videos didn't teach anything. you have to read the textbook to really understand the material. the paper was ridiculous, I would not recommend taking this class with this professor.
Complete waste of time in my opinion. There is so much work and none of it is relative to the exams. ONLY WAY TO MAKE DECENT GRADE IS TO READ THE TEXTBOOK AT LEAST 100 TIMES. Professor does not care about you whats ever. Ive sent plenty of emails and itis not returned till the next day... AFTER THE ASSIGNMENT IS OVER. AVOID HER AT ALL COST. TRUSTME
Overall she is good and gives good lectures but requires many assignments done during the week. That may seem like a bad thing but it makes you do the work and prepares you for the tests that are worth over half of your grade.
Doesn't go the extra mile.
Impossible class, plz do not take her, she doesn't help her students at all, doesnt care, the structure is insanely difficult.
Relatively easy class if you put a normal amount of work in. Explains economics very well and isn't a super tough grader. Got a B+ because I didn't turn in assignments but probably would have gotten an A if I tried.
She is the absolute worst Econ professor. Her lecture videos are terrible and are very vague. When you go to her office hours she still does not fully explain the content. Her tone of voice is rude and passive aggressive. There are only a few grades that matter like the tests, quizzes, and the papers. Take another professor that cares
I cannot recommend taking Professor Martinezs class. It is very lecture based and the 7 page essay is worth a HUGE percentage of the class grade. She takes WEEKS to grade assignments and is not very timely in responding to emails. She seems very nice, but could benefit her class by changing a few things.
Is passive aggressive when you speak to her, does not care about her students. Avoid if possible.
The course material itself isn't too bad but Prof. Martinez doesn't actually TEACH anything. The class consists of watching a lecture from the textbook author every week and doing a HW assignment (usually takes about 2-3 hours to complete both) w/ a quiz every week and a few discussion posts. Nothing unbearable but definitely a last resort.
This is a glorified AP class, with a borderline mediocre professor. The inability of the professor to convey the material is made up for by tedious and pointless high-school level busy work. Not interesting or engaging avoid if possible.
She is just rude an unforgiving. Doesnt care about technology issues at all and will just give u a zero. Just makes u watch pre recorded lectures, even though the class is in person. Main issue is her attitude is sickening and acts like she cant be bothered with us peasants, disturbing experience over all, do not take her
The teaching method is awful. Gives videos and multiple pages of homework on the videos for students to learn on their own. Lectures are only 9 questions kahoots. Complete waste of time.
Ever since day one her method of teaching is all over the place and you will get a few zeros just trying to figure out how things work. Out of the first 4 weeks before the mid term exam, i believe i only saw her once or twice in person. Her lectures are merely drawn out kahoots and just boring online videos she posted, along with notes.
1. Attendance is graded but graded based on if you got attendance questions correct 2. Irl lectures are 1 kahoot & 2 attendance questions. 3. Her lecture assignments are 17 pages long & boring. 4. Couldnt bother showing up to 1st exam review. The TAs probably dislike her more than the students do. Overall will bring you to hell and leave u there
I absolutely hate her style of teaching. On the one lecture day a week the only thing we do is 9 Kahoot questions and 2 group discussion questions. Waste of time in person and basically you are learning everything on your own online.
I don't feel like I have the same prof. as some of these other comments. I think she's great. Maybe it's different with the online class. She's fair but tough on grading. She wants you to understand the answers not just regurgitate textbook learning. I don't like Economics in general so I probably won't have her again.
Dropped this class hoping for a different teacher, got her again. lots and lots of homework that doesnt help you learn for the quizzes and tests. It is definitely possible to learn a lot from her class and to be successful, but most students agree theyd switch to another professor if they could.
The class was challenging but she was very supportive. I would definitely take class with her again!
I never took a class like this but I find myself really liking it. You watch the lectures before hand and in class is like a review. You have to prepare but I like that it is not like a normal class.
She is a horrible professor. she takes pride in students failing her class and she does not want to be bothered by any students. she will make you feel dumb if you ask questions. the material we go over in video lectures and class is nothing like the tests so even if you study all the material she gives you you will find yourself struggling on test
Although Mrs. Martinez is not the most caring professor, the class is easy overall. Her lectures are posted online and you take notes with a provided notes sheet. You meet in-class for group participation one day a week (is a big part of your grade). There are also weekly quizzes but they are easy and help balance out your grade. Easy A class:)
Will give you a 0/5 on an assignment even though you completed it and it will drop your grade 15%. I don't know why she became a professor. She is clearly intelligent but she lacks any remorse/empathy for other people. She has ruined my semester. This class isn't engaging, it is a bunch of busy work. You are better off taking another class.
the first few classes, the prof didn't even show up to class, and had her TA's monitoring the class while she "taught" on live. many assignments per week, pretty much teaching yourself, and takes pride in her students doing bad. our one class per week consists of a kahoot and then 2 discussion questions. waste of time and made me hate this class
First couple classes she had her TAs teach as she sat online virtually. She blatantly disregards questions and concerns of students, that's if she lets you finish asking your questions to begin with. Her lecture notes are due before we even have her lecture. Her lectures consist of very vague kahoot explanations and 3 questions she doesnt explain.
I consider myself a good student but this class brought me to my knees. If you have any other options do not take this professor. It is not worth it the exams are so difficult and count for a huge % of your grade. The avg grade for the exams in the class is a 60%. If you have her now good luck and get ready for hell.
No matter how much studying, she made her quizzes and tests rather impossible. My friend who had a different professor but the same class would receive answers back from her tests and I actually would know the answers but our tests were impossible. No matter how much I studied I'd get a 60 on every quiz. She also has no sympathy for anything.
This professor has no respect towards her students and quite honestly does not know how to teach. Lectures are prerecorded, and a typical in-person class consists of a short Kahoot and a few clicker questions. Most of the time she was drawing various graphs as an "explanation" which seemingly helped no one. Avoid if possible.
Probably one of the rudest and inconsiderate teachers I've had. One time a student was asking if Martinez could turn the volume on for the presented video and she told her to shut up. waste a lot of paper printing out the hundreds of useless class note worksheets that she assigns us to. uses iclicker for participation, sucks if u have bad wifi...
Does not care at all and wont respond to messages
She is a terrible professor, the kind you never want to encounter in college. She is terrible with communication (emails), rude, and makes no effort to make a connection with her students. She teaches as if she hates her job and students. Also be prepared for her to GRADE your attendance and be prepared for her strict grading. Good luck.
i agree with all the bad reviews about her; lectures were useless and lecture material was too when it came to being prepared for the exam. use the textbook to actually learn, but i would recommend avoiding this professor at all costs, even as a last resort. she doesnt teach much in person outside of the video lectures which are not engaging
Please avoid at all costs. She waited until the last ten minutes of the grading period to post final grades, takes forever to post grades in general, gives 5 assignments per week, her grading scale is all over the place, and has no care for her students. I would have rather taken this class online by anyone else than from this professor.
Though this class was bearable enough for me to get an A , I had to teach everything to myself. All im gonna say is to READ THE BOOK before exams. it is the only thing that will help you because her lectures suck. she assigns 20+ page worksheets that will not help on top of other assignments that dont help. Just read its the only thing that helps.
My experience with Dr. Martinez was mildly decent at best. I could tell she is somewhat passionate about what she is teaching but she comes across as if she is struggling to maintain anything else but a passive-aggressive attitude towards her students. There were times when I struggled to show up to class because I knew I had to teach myself.
This class was supposed to be in person but this professor decides to record all her lectures prior and you must watch them and follow along with notes on your own. Then you come to class one day a week and are expected to know what you watched. She does not teach properly and does not really explain well. Would not recommend her at all.
Homework assignments where you'd watch video lectures and write down notes. Not difficult but they were usually 10-20 pages long and would take forever to complete. Flipped classroom, video lectures are watched and then you come into class. Attendance is mandatory due to clickers. Not a hard class but do yourself a favor and pick a better professor
This was taught as a hybrid blend, she reused old videos from 2020 that have so many mistakes its hard to learn content properly; this was our main method of instruction. I sent an email 8 days before the first exam with a question about the content. She did not respond until 2 days AFTER the exam; this was the case throughout the semester as well.
To do well on the exams you have to do a lot of studying; so I recommend taking it with easy classes. My biggest criticism is that she gives too much busy work. It's not hard to do just tedious. When it comes to the essay she's a tough grader. This semester she was really nice and if it wasn't for her offering extra credit I wouldn't have passed.
I found her video lectures not hard to understand, and her recorded study sessions were helpful before taking the exams. In terms of weekly assignments (notes, discussions and quizzes), it took me around 3-4 hours to complete them. For me, it was an average class in terms of difficulty, I don't understand why she gets such a bad rep.
Worst professor at USF by a Mile, She has no compassion for her job and it seems obvious she finds enjoyment in making a respectably challenging course as difficult as possible. It is also blatantly obvious at least a quarter of the good reviews written about her on this site are either her, or one of her TA's. Never take this professor, NEVER!!
The course concepts were not difficult if you studied, the issue was her. There were 3 essay assignments and they were just ridiculous and the instructions were not clear. The class is not bad but if you want a professor that you can email and ask for help or clarification she is not it. TRY TO AVOID
There was a decent amount of work but I learned a lot. If you watch the lecture videos you will be fine.
This is one of my favorite teachers so far at usf. I learned a lot, even though I was nit excited about taking this course.
Just get rid of the discussion posts portion of the class, there are way too many online students to make it worth anyones time. Also, cut down on so many areas to read, get quizzed on, take practice tests etc. This class could be great if it was kept at the principles level. Not full on Micro without great lecture vids. Avoid if possible.
She assigned three assignments due before our first class of the semester, and did not make an exception for late work. Every lecture starts with an online quiz with iclicker, but they are open note. However, if you miss a day you get a 0 on that iclicker quiz. Lecture notes are done before the lecture through videos, making the lecture pointless.
The lectures and tests are very heavy. Erika Martinez is nice though, but she doesn't accept any late work.
A lot of homework, quizzes, and assignments. I thought micro was going to be an easy class but she really throws a lot of information at you to memorize. Good personality but too much work
Dr. Martinez has amazing, comprehensive lectures on all of the topics which appeared on the final exam. You can easily get by in the class without any textbooks (thought they help) if you stick to her lectures. The only reason someone wouldn't get at least a B is because they simply didn't put in enough work, which is very minimal. Overall great.
Wasn't as bad as I expected. Her lectures and work cover the exact material on quizzes and exams; there are no surprises. Work assigned is excessive and time consuming, but it did have a purpose. My big complaint is that she is extremely rude and makes you feel dumb for asking questions. If she was a nicer person, she'd be a great professor.
She has lecture notes you can fill out which makes understanding concepts easier than having only the textbook to read. She does give a good amount of homework but has a decent amount of drops so if you miss a few it won't affect your grade. Overall as long as you stay on top of deadlines you shouldn't have a problem.
This class was challenging. 10-20 page pointless lecture notes do every week. None of my peers with other professors in economics experienced this. Professor Martinez is very wise in her field, but her teaching style is unhelpful. 8 page final paper was difficult & graded harshly (start this early). Definitely meet with your TA's - they're helpful!
Dr. Martinez provides very detailed weekly lectures, and the textbook helps get a full-circle understanding of the material. Discussion boards, quizzes, homework assignments, two exams, and a research paper. Feedback is provided on the research paper, which is broken down into multiple sections. Great class and wise professor in her field.
I would not take this class again because of several aspects such as, lots of homework, lack of unit inform. So, as a student I would not recommend you guys to take this Professor (((
The material in the class isn't hard if you study, however the exams make it seem as if no matter how much you study you will fail. It also doesnt help that they are closed notes which made this class extremely difficult. Not to mention that 80 percent of your grade will be made up of 3 tests and a writing assignment. Please avoid if possible.
The assignments are extensive and useless, we have a discussion board every week that requires us to write comparative to half an essay. The quizzes are okay since she provides enough time (20 minutes for 10 questions- every week). There is an essay and it is super strict and futile.
Firm but I would say she is fair. The class was not a breeze but she was fairly understanding and helpful. She brought in snacks to my class multiple times and showed she cared. Difficult class and definitely requires you to work hard.
Genuinely dont understand as to why she has such low ratings. Typical professor, no late work, weekly discussion posts that are not nearly as bad as people are making them out to be. I watched just her lectures and fared quite well. Material is not bad either just do what she advises (listen to directions) and you're good. Don't be a bot.
Erika Martinez- she's not a bad professor at all - the work was challenging -you must do all assignments to do well in the class if by chance you fail a test or 2. Just don't take the class lightly and you will be fine.
Lots of high expectations and many assignments per week, as well as having to write an essay while doing these and a short essay as well. Difficult to manage time with this class and other classes.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to take this course, her TA's grading is wildly inconsistent. There are often weeks where papers AND exams are due and her study material is not helpful for exams. The fact that I took this online doesn't make it any easier. Dr. Martinez if you're reading this please consider revamping your course... or retiring.
She doesnt even teach, Ive taught myself everything from the textbook. You gotta space out the work. Make sure you get the right sentances on discussions. Its not a hard topic, just a lot of work. TAs have no clue whats going on. I have no clue how she has a job.She does nothing the whole year besides set up the canvas and quizes TAs do all the work
She's not the greatest professor for an online class. 3 assignments a week, plus some random GenEd assignments (writing essays). She doesn't teach and it's all self taught. The exams are much harder and the practice and study materials she gives you aren't helpful for the exam. Wouldn't recommend.
This class was honestly pretty hard. The information is all self taught, and what is on the tests/exams is not what she is teaching. Wouldnt recommend if you are looking for an easy online class.
Already a boring class and assignments are tedious. The professor is hard to reach. High workload for an online class and she is a tough grader. If you have the option, take this class in person.
She never really interacts with students, her office hours are at inconvenient times, especially for college students. Her lectures are long and prerecorded. Discussion, quiz, lecture, assignment every week. Not only is the topic hard but she uses Honorlock for exams so good luck with that. The only good is that there are two attempts on the exams.
Lots of things to do, way too much for an online class. Tests are made as hard as possible. Lectures are old and recorded. Have to do essays on top of all the work we get for the week. I don't recommend you take this class unless you have a solid economics foundation already.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! SHE WILL DO EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO MAKE U FAIL! She makes the simple topics extremely complicated for no reason. The tests, assignments, quizzes, study materials, and lectures HAVE NO CORRELATION AT ALL. For one assignment she COUNTED the amount of sentences I wrote and gave me a 50% for forgetting ONE AI statement.
Honestly, if you can avoid this class, avoid it. She makes the course content much more difficult than it needs to be, her grading is very meticulous, and she is not really accessible outside the classroom. Her TA's are also useless. I joined the Microsoft teams office hours, and got no help. The stress in this class is REAL. Not worth it.
avoid this class at all costs if possible i must try so hard and cry several times to attempt an A- at the end of the class. the paper assignment costs a lot of time and effort, and the fact that you had to begin from scratch with little help or resources. she's a friendly and amazing person yet a tough grader :) my gpa is ruined
Did not have much interaction with her as it was an online class. I cannot say much about her but the course itself was not a pleasant experience. Grading is quite harsh, and it is not easy to get an A. If you have other options, I would say do not pick this course.
Really tough class with a heavy workload. Grading was tough and resources were not helpful. Professor martinez herself is a very lovely woman but the course was set up badly. I really recommend studying the textbook it has all the information on midterms and finals. I do not suggest one takes this class.
This class was difficult and the grading was quite harsh (mostly tests and quizzes). Homework, discussion post, and quiz every week. Take notes from the book. Never even looked at the lectures and did fine. Good point was that this semester she allowed retakes on each exam (even the final).
Im sure she's nice in person. However, her class is a mess. The final paper had inconsistent grading and feedback. There were like 700 kids in the online class and every TA gave different grades. Her office hours are at extremely inconvenient times as well. Take this in person or with another professor.
Can already tell it will be a very long semester ahead she does not give any directions whatsoever you just have to figure everything out on your own.
This class took up so much of my time every week. Had homework assignment, discussion post, and quiz every week. We had to finish parts of a huge paper the same week as the exam. Big case study paper that won't even be graded till after the semester (didn't know my final grade till the very end). Teach yourself. Avoid this class if you can!
This class is way too much work for being a basic business pre req class. Way too much of your grade is based on the exams, I got a 92.5 on one and 95 on the other, and still look like I'm going to get a B because only a 94 and above is an A, and WONT curve even if you have a 93.99. I found the professor to be highly non-empathetic as well.
STEER CLEAR OF CLASS. Must teach everything to yourself. Exams are nothing like course work. Papers are confusing and long. Worst class I ever had.
Overall the class was okay. Weekly quizzes that are not worth a lot. Weekly discussion posts are annoying but not difficult. Exams are worth most of your grade.
Very tough grader, this class took more time then my others combined!!!! Nothing you learn on the quizzes are on the exam and the exams are a large majority of your grade. STEER CLEAR
If you ever want to feel meaningless, take her. She has a section of 800+ students where both her and the TA are not accessible. Grading structure is inconsistent & not communicated very well. 7-8 page paper due at the end. Her pre-recorded old lecture videos help a little but essentially everything in this course you will need to teach yourself.
Exams are tough, but you are allowed two attempts.
Avoid this class. Weekly discussion posts and quizzes that are very time consuming. Tests are hard. 7 page case study and final exam are due back to back. Professor is not very empathetic and grades hard. My most time consuming class.
Biweekly homework, quizzes, and discussion posts weren't too bad. Tough grader on the Gen Ed papers. Difficult to score 80+ on the heavily weighted tests, I studied and listened to all her lectures. I appreciate the extra credit opportunities. Her Canvas response time was about a day. Time consuming, don't take with a bunch of other classes!
god why is there no other microeconomic teacher at usf. this is my third time taking her and she literally is a mess of a professor. unfortunately if you have to take this class i feel very bad for you
I am taking her class currently, I've gotten A's on everything + and 80 on the exam (I forgot to study one section). Most of her questions on the exams or practice exams you can find one achieve through the practice exams. If you sit down and listen to her lecture like its a normal lecture class and understand each topic you will do fine.
The professor/classes are good. If you put in the effort to watch and take notes, you'll do fine. You'll need to buy Pearson for homework only because lectures are recorded anyway. Be ready for a weekly discussion posts and 2 quizzes (time-consuming). 3 long papers, 2 mid-terms, and final. If you don't do well on the exams, you're pretty much fail.
Overall her class was quite difficult and would require considerably more time and effort inorder to recieve a passing grade. There are 3 assignments due weekly: homework, discussions, and a quiz. The hard hitters are the exams and paper. The exams have multiple attempts and the paper has a rough draft. During hurricane milton she was very caring.
Avoid this class unless you're willing to put in serious time and effort. Weekly assignments are a slog, and exams are brutally tough - even high 90s scores may not be enough for an A. Definitely utilize resources like Unstuck study along with the textbook to stay afloat.
Currently taking this class. One bad exam grade will drop your grade even if you do well on other assignments. Her grading method is also confusing. Most of the assignment grades are all dropped which means your current grade is based on what isn't (20 assignments out of 36 youll have to do and exams) You'll won't know your real grade until the end
Her class isn't that hard online. If you follow the criteria stated in the first discussion board than its very easy to do well in. (2 8 sentence paragraphs, respond 1 paragraph to 2 classmates, etc.) The tests and quizzes aren't hard either, If you study for them by using Achieve and the lectures its VERY easy.
Out of my 5 classes this one loads me the most each week. Definitely not a terrible class if you stay on top of lectures. being a hybrid schedule student with this online I really struggle with the workload and there not much talk about upcoming tests or papers until they are are in your lap and your up late studying or writing. Try to avoid.
This course itself isn't easy. The frustration people felt is understandable as the material is confusing – the book and her lectures share concepts, but her lectures provide additional information that can help you on the test and weekly quizzes. Exams should not carry a heavy percentage. The exams are easier than Achieve's practice tests.
Martinez is like any other professor: strict + rational. Quiz/discussion rarely take up the grade. Make sure to do well on the midterms + final because those are what holds the most percentage. Overall, not an easy course, so put time and effort. There's also 7% extra credit for overall grade. Assessments = easier on Canvas than Achieve
this teacher has hard exams like HARD because the questions, most of the time aren't in the notes or lecture videos. she also has a final essay that is 7-8 pages which makes like no sense. also why are we doing a whole essay, this aint eng comp.
She is fine but you just have to make sure you keep up with everything since it was entirely online so no one is there to keep you motivated. You do not get feedback on tests so it is kinda difficult to study for and the but she does give you a lot of material to go through. Just be very self motivated.
This professor is out of her mind. She requires weekly discussion posts in which you must provide at least 16 sentences for a response rather than just typing out a shorter, more high-quality response. There is also a 7-12 page required research paper that you must complete before the end of the semester ON TOP of all the other homework. Test heavy
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.Whole grade is based off exams with no leeway for late work. You never meet the professor or go to an in person class but 3 exams are online and the FINAL IS IN PERSON. All lectures are her reading slides, exams are honorlock, and she gives a long essay for no reason. If you take this class prepare for misery.
Do not take this professor. Your grade pretty much depends on the hard exams yet theres time-consuming weekly work. You have to put in a ton of effort and teach yourself. Definitely avoid
Honestly if you can take any other teacher take it. She is not horrible it is just a very heavy course load and she does not grade easy. There are 2 midterms that SIGNIFICANTLY affect your grade. The final is IN PERSON and it sucks. I wish I would have taken it with a different teacher.
I hated this class and it was so hard for no reason I am currently studying for the final and I am taking notes on the textbook as well as the lecture videos she provides and I go to do the practice tests and I get 0's because she actually does not teach anything well and everything is confusing and I HATE IT. Also an essay in a economics class.
She is created accusation that I used ai in a assignment that I did by myself and refused accept any of my statements and gave me no recourse even though she was in the wrong.
terrible teacher, her notes were so unorganized and she was very annoying with her assignments and announcements. seemed like she wanted us to fail her "mandatory" in-person final. DO NOT take Erika Martinez. I chose an online class so i wouldn't have to go in-person, yet she insisted on holding an in-person final.
Terrible teacher, take literally anyone else. By far the worst teacher i have ever had at USF, impossible tests, terrible notes and study guides, and no leeway towards anything, plus an in-person final even for online students. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
She teaches like a high school teacher. Irrational and extreme requirements, down to the number of sentences that should be in your paragraph. An extremely difficult and time consuming final paper even though this is an economics class. Absurd requirements for a gen ed economics class and the need to meet requirements overshadows learning.
Took Fall 2023. Personally enjoyed how she set up the class. Some assignments were mandatory, and there were other optional things that could help you if you felt it would. I did all of the optional things and felt like I learned a lot and earned my grade. Exams aren't hard if you prepare.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE TAKEN. She is out of her mind, this class is harder and more time consuming than any major or upper l
Insane amount of hw that are worth nothing and exams that are worth way too much.
Erika Martinez should be removed and terminated by USF. she is clearly unfit to teach and i would reccomend anyone avoid her class
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. As a finance major, this class is more time consuming and difficult compared to any upper level class I have taken. SHE DOES NOT WANT YOU TO SUCCEED. Exams make up almost the entire grade, final mandatory in person for an online class. Ridiculous expectations and does not accomodate to ANYTHING.
I have never taken a professor with such ridiculous expectations for an entry level class. She is not helpful at all, takes forever to respond to emails, and has ridiculous exam policies. I chose this class because it was online, and have to drive 500 miles to take the final since IT IS MANDATORY IN PERSON YOU CANNOT DROP IT AND IS WORTH 25%.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR LIKE THE PLAGUE. WORST DECISION I HAVE MADE TO TAKE THIS CLASS SAVE YOURSELF AND CHOOSE ANOTHER PROFESSOR
This professor needs to resign immediately. Worst professor ever. In person quizzes and in person exams and she does not even know what she is doing. Why does she waste our time and money if she wants to be so rude and so unhelpful? She is always angry and shows sarcasm when you ask questions. The attitude in this one is very strong. STAY AWAY
Awful teacher, doesn't teach anything, lectures look like they were recorded in 2012, and have no correlation to the tests that she gives. Ridiculous amount of workload for a gen-ed class with very harsh grading. Absolute worst teacher I've ever had at USF or anywhere for that matter.
HORRIBLE!!! Her online lectures were the worst and did not prepare you for quizzes or exams. The amount of work she would assign was ridiculous, including a whole 10 page paper due the week before finals. Stay away from her, genuinely the worst. I have nothing nice to say about her and this class.
Had to drop this class. You have a quiz, a discussion board, and one other assignment weekly. Exams are worth 65% of your course grade. Used her "study guide" for the first midterm, got a 55%. Dropped the class before the second midterm because if I got straight 100s, I would still fail. DONT TAKE HER!
I work full time and took this class with Dr. Martinez and 1 other class so my POV may be different. The quizzes and notes were easy to follow. Discussion posts became tedious over time. We had 2 midterms and a final. 1st midterm I got an 85, 2nd a 65, and final a 75. Ended class with A- despite it all. She gives extra credit which helps a lot.
Just an awful class. Theres too much stuff and the tests are worth way too much of the grade and are nothing like what we learned or any of the study material.
I took the summer A online version of this class. It was hard. Most sped up classes are; however, this was much harder than anticipated. The tests are open note though which is nice. The material is kind of hard. There's extra credit options that you SHOULD do. The issue was taking very long to do final grades and was unhelpful during this. 4.5/10
I'm convinced most people in the reviews are lazy. I took this class over summer while working and it was extremely manageable. The exams are not difficult in any way, just actually study using her lectures and the extra vids. She is quick to answer emails. The only tedious assignment is the GEA (which is broken up into multiple assignments).
Took during Summer A and honestly was really manageable, exams are open note. Weekly homework was macmillan which was really easy and do a discussions post + replies (no homework when exam week). Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Exams are kind of tough but manageable. Really good grader and kind. 10/10!
Overall I think if you are able to work hard you can succeed in this class. However I will say her grading system is not good, having majority of your grade be 3 exams is not cool. However she structures the class VERY well, and TAs are always available to help you. Challenging, but not impossible.
If you can avoid her class, please do and save yourself. There is an excessive amount of workload for no reason, and making three exam grades account for the majority of your grade is unreasonable. You always have to be on your toes for this class, and the exams are harder than my other science classes.
A lot of class work. However, the only thing that will influence your grade is the three test of the course. Not flexible at all on due dates, even if real emergencies occur. Additionally, if you don't meet a very specific word count your grade will drop significantly, always read the word count it will decide your grade!
As long as you do your work you are sure to get an A. There are many opportunities to make up your grade and though it may look like there are a lot of assignments they're all very easy! There are also many extra credit opportunities at the end that brought me up 4% Her course instructions are easy to understand just make sure you study for exams.
I was working part-time while taking this class so other experiences may vary. Harder than what I would liked for an gen ed class. The tests dictating your grades are ok, but the final exam really matters so place an emphasis on that. Her responses to email are good and so is providing feedback. If you want to get an A you will need to study hard.
