Intelligent, passionate, interesting and committed. An excellent teacher. Inspiring and caring -- fun TOO!!!
This class is about learning to celebrate difference and understanding so much about language and literature and how language shapes reality.... excellent, enthusiasim, passion, and lots of discussion.
Best english teacher i've ever had. Period.
Erika is a great prof who's main objective is helping her students succeed. Her class is easy-going and the work is reasonable. She really truely cares that her students improve!
Paterson knows NOTHING about the fringe movement - she should go to infringementfestival.com to get the real story. Putting corporate propaganda into encyclopedias is just plain WRONG!
A great teacher - her class goes by real quick cause she keeps to the interesting stuff and I did way better than i expected at the end cause she always helps and encourages us. Take this class if you want to learn, laugh, and stay awake too.
I loved this class, and this prof. She was inspiring and motivating. She took the initiative to teach with passion. Sad she has left, would have taken more classes with her.
I studied English Lit and Public Speaking with Erika. She is simply an amazing teacher who brings increadible experience into the class. A true humanitarian with a wonderful sense of humour and wit and so so caring and knowldegable. I changed my major because Erika inspired me to believe in the value of the arts as a means for change. Thank-you
Great class, great teacher, interesting and enlighting!
This class was so wishy washy you didn't know how you were doing on anything in the class until the last couple of weeks. Way way too much work with all the outside reading and assigned reading and the novel. So unclear on expectations. Make sure you take her point of view, she is very biased. Pretty easy marker though.
Fasinating class, unusual yes, but mostly because you are expected to bring your own ideas to class. This was the most interesting and enjoyable class I have had so far. At first it is difficult because Erika does NOT expect tell you what to think -- rather she listens to what you have to say. Excellent approach if you want to an independent thinker
Great class, the most interesting and enlightening 50 min of my week. I guess the person who says Erika is wishywashy doesn't like a prof who actually cares, motivates, encourages.
This class was different,Erika is the kindest teacher, and the material and her presentation was about actually expereinceing 'orality' and 'dialogue' as a way of learning -- in context with a literary tradition. Erika puts everything in a context and is so interesting. I highly recommend taking one of her classes. It is an increadible experience -
erika's opinions were obviously biased, the class seemed like it had little direction and way too much group work, 1/3 of every week actually...class is good if you need it, if not don't bother
This class was the worst class ever.Erika thinks she's native and turned the class into Native Opression 222, not Canadian Literature.I didn't learn a thing about Cdn Lit, although I learned a lot about how oppressed Natives are.She said she would give extensions, but never did, even under extrenuating circumstances. What a waste of time.
Best prof. i have had so far. Really interesting class, and makes literature relevant to circumstances./ Some people really surprised me with their **** attitudes, though. Erika did a really good job considering.

Let me just say that all of the negative comments on this website are only the opinions of highly closed-minded individuals. I thought we were in university to experience different perspectives. Anways, Erika is a wonderful professor who offers a colourful collaboration of historical background and traditional literature. Trust me, take the class.
First of all, this wasnt english, it was 3 months of learning about natives and how they were screwed. Extremely biased class, filled with brown nosers, as long as you go with the flow and rewrite what she tells you, your guaranteed a good grade though.Just talk about native oppresion, but do not take this class as an elective,in no way interestin
I can not believe the **** comments being made by two or three people -- I am ashamed to think that I studied with such mean and hateful people. To so resent learning something about First Nations people is shameful. Shame on you!
Amazing! This class is what a university class should be - intelligent, sensitive, and Erika is one couragious person. She is also really cool. Take the journay, you will be transformed and a whole lot smarter too.
This is the best class that I have taken at UBC. There is a lot of work to do in her class, but it is great working with Erika. I wish that every class was like this at UBC.
Biased and politically incorrect at times, yet fun at others. Needs to be more careful with spelling etc. but she's a sweet person. Maybe not the best teacher, our class was OFTEN confused.
Excellent class, really active and never boring - I learned a lot and I had a lot of fun too. Made good friends. Erika really is excited about teaching and she keeps us excited about learning. We did an amazing conference on Digital Literacy and learned how to work in digital environments. WOW, it was a cool semester.
biased ><
Well, Erika is one of the most down-to-earth prof i've met. She's open to students' suggestions and admits and jokes about her own mistakes. She's friendly and a reasonable marker, as long as you imporve your writing according to her notes. I got 97 on the final and 90 overall, probably the highest mark i'll ever get in an univeristy english course

Erika was an excellent professor. She was extremely friendly and helpful, and her use of journals made the class very personal. She is very enthusiastic about teaching and although she doesn't use very conventional methods overall I found the class to be quite enjoyable.
Best Teacher I had at UBC. Erika is extremely friendly, open to suggestions and helpful. She's engaging and made the class interesting to be in.
It's just the 2nd week of class but I've never had an English class like this - she is so interesting and different and really nice too. So far, I am so glad to have her as my teacher for my first year!
Through the first few months of class, a collective opinion is that we haven't actually learned anything useful. She just sits in class and talks, doesn't actually say much, just talks, complete waste of time, but nonetheless it fills first-year english
This is a hard class because Erika expects a lot of work, but we also learn a lot and she is always interesting. This is the only class I look forward to coming to, and the best English class I have ever had.
Erika was by far the best teacher I had in first year. She is ahead of the game and utilizes the benefits of technology to enhance the learning environment. You learn how to write proper, academic papers, which you will be thankful for in the future! If you can, get in her class!
This was the most interesting class -- Erika: creative and thoughtful teacher who brings out the best in her students Her passion and knowledge for the subject and her RESPECT for students makes you just wanna do your best in return. This is the 2nd class I have had the pleasure of taking with Erika -- if you can - get into her classes.
Yes, yes and yes! A wonderful prof -- one of the best I have had after four years!
To add to all the positive comments, Erika is really one of the best profs I've ever had. She's very very passionate about what she's teaching, and yes she has her own opinions but they all make sense to me. very very approachable and encouraging to her students. I took the summer course so there was a lot of work, but worth it!!
If you like to think independently and creatively and you like to express your critical thinking without worrying about the Prof's perspective, take this class! Erika is honestly interested in learning from her students - her class is exciting and always interesting. Cutting edge in a lot of ways. Do not be afraid of her requirements - worth it!!
Great professor. Marks fairly easy but does require a bit of writing. Presentation was fun that involved your own interest. Could have been a perfect class if it wasn't for our incompetent organizers who persist on mentioning redundant questions in which have no focus on the final. As long as your willing to work hard its an easy A.
Wow - what a unique and wonderful educational experience. Dr. Paterson is an amazing prof!
A truly gifted teacher who encourages creativity in academic work. An enjoyable, enlightening, and highly motivating class!
:) :) :) :) :) :) !!!!!!! If you can - get into one of Erika's classes!!
this class has just started, but what a great beginning! Even though it is a three hour class, I couldn't believe it when time was up ... she is just so interesting to listen to!
Erika is a truly inspiring teacher, she doesn't teach so much as motivate and inspire us to learn -- and her course is groundbreaking. Her openness to our ideas and observations is just so unusual in a literature course, and our assignments are exciting and original. I just know I am going to learn so much in this class! Already have!
Every one says English 112 is a horrible course, but this is not true in Erika's class! She is brilliant - and I will be too when she finishes teaching me how to write like a true scholar! Loving it - thanks erika
So, here's how it happened, I says .... she is wonderful!
********************************I got in the best 112 class - this is it! Lucky! She's nice and funny too -
TAKE THIS COURSE!! Amazing prof: I'm currently looking up more courses she's teaching and I don't even care what she's teaching. Very easy marks if she can tell you put in the effort; very interesting lectures, you won't need to force yourself to pay attention.
Terrible, switch out of you have her. Most useless prof ever. But if she likes you you'll get an A
I dont know who left that last message - but they sure weren't in my class. Erika is a really good teacher! She is helpful and funny and she makes interesting assignments - we did a conference it was really good.
To be Honest Erika if you are reading this, a lot of people did not learn much in your 112 classes. How do we improve if you dont constantly correct our docs? Maybe this year was just bad from the past years. You have skipped out 3 days of our classes. I followed others format of the paper but yet I still recieve a grade I did not appreciate.
Firstly, person below me: don't generalize on behalf of all her English 112 students, I for one loved her. I've talked to 8 people and ALL of them without exception said they liked her and enjoyed her classes. She is inspiring, highly educated and extremely compassionate...she cares about her students' well being and grade, despite most other profs
If you put a constant amount effort into Erika's class, she will make sure that you are rewarded. She is a great prof that makes good use of laptops in class and google docs. When it comes to big assignments, take notes on all the small things she says and they won't go unnoticed in your work.
I can honestly say 112 was one of my favourite classes this term. I learned so much in her class, I know my writting skills have inproved ten-fold. You cant expect her to check you google pages all the time, but she is ALWAYS answering questions and posting examples of peoples work. If you work hard, it will definitely pay. off
Before taking this course I was completely unenthusiastic about english and just wanted to fulfill my requirements. Erika made it easy for everyone to succeed by making it obvious what was expected and taught really well. Her class I actually enjoyed and feel as though my writing has improved dramatically since the beginning of term!
I hate English with a passion and at first I took the class only as a mandatory course... little did I know that Erika was able to turn English not just bearable... but enjoyable. Erika is a thoughtful, helpful, cheerful and reasonable teacher; she always gives good advice and makes class interesting and unforgettable. Take one of her courses now!
Erika is a very helpful and thoughtful prof. Even though English is my worst course and I hate it, in her class it is enjoyable and interesting. The homework is also useful and important for the final exam. U can learn and study writing skills from the numerous examples she gives.
Can't say she was a good prof but she definitely wasn't horrible
person below me, she asked us to come post TRUTHFUL COMMENTS NOT FAVORABLE! Rate my profs is a completely anonymous site so you can see that in fact Dr. Paterson is a great prof and she has alot of happy students. For our term essay she was so helpful and tried to help us, while most other first yr english profs would NEVER go thru that hassle
There are those on this website who obviously love this professor, and those that down right hate her. To those who read any of the Dec 13 rates, be warned they may be biased, as I doubt many of these people would have used this website unless it brought up by Dr. Patterson.
This professor is knowledgable and really enjoys the subject, you can see her passion during classes. But there is a reason why professors don't have a degree in education. I will honestly say I did not learn much of anything this term, classes are rather fruitless, filled with powerpoints and talking and yet not much understanding. IMO
She is a fair teacher who cares about the material being taught and whether or not the students learn it. Very knowledgeable and makes class interesting.
She is a great beautiful teacher I've ever met. With smily face, she gladly gives feedback if you go to her office hours, and it really helps.
A really great and understanding teacher.
I wouldnt be surprised if Erika herself posted these comments. She emailed every student about this thru UBC which I think is incorrect use of her ubc email. Personally, she is truly passionate about English. But how are you suppose to learn based on someone else's mistakes (examples what she use)?
Most useful class I had all semester. Erika was able to connect the course material to the real world, allowing each of us to explore our own interests while simultaneously learning new skills. Her teaching style is very fluid, and if you don't understand something - she is very approachable and willing to make time for you outside of class.
Erika is one of the best English teachers I ever had! Her idea of using google doc to access student's teacher is brilliant. Her class is fun and informative. She is also nice and helpful when u go to her.
GREAT TEACHER
I agree - Best prof I've had so far
A fun class with a lot of work but Erika works to make it better then the other 112 classes. You can't choice your 112 class, so if you get her you are lucky.
Very helpful teacher! She cares a lot about all her students.
As a person, she's wonderful, engaging, and approachable. But I'm still not sure if she is the best fit for an english teacher. Her background is in film/directing/theatre, and its obvious in what she focuses on in teaching. Definitely not a class for those who like or are used to structure. She's a very free person and goes with the flow
Does not use textbooks; required reading is her blog, which I find to be all over the place and hard to learn from. You need to be an active learner, and she lets students take control of the projects, with no clear expectation of what to explore.Discussion on facebook(25%!!!), so not good if you're shy;better for the obnoxious ppl in eng.classes
although its easy to sit thru her class and it wont make u fall asleep, u wont rly learn anything either. i never know wth shes talkin about in lecture. i actually wanted an english class where they analyze pieces with u cuz i wouldnt learn that elsewhere. no actual EDITED textbooks..just her own notes/ideas. has spelling/grammar issues sometimes
Erika is a very nice person, and she's obviously passionate about what she teaches. However, I disliked the lack of structure. My final exam essay was HORRIBLE because the concepts we learn are so vague. And I dislike the use of facebook discussions, I prefer in class participation.
Reading the comments below, I guess you'd have to say it depends on what kind of 'learner' you are - I loved the opportunity to explore and research indepth with withou all the normal constratints - and I thoguht the facebook page was brilliant way to expand on class room discussions - for me this course was amazing - I learned a lot!
Great class - we had a lot of fun and I think I am a better writer today - actually, i should say today I know how to write like a scholar!
This is the hardest course I ever took. She is very bias toward her favourite student. She also doesn't explain the concept well while giving out a lot of hw that requires you to know these concept. Not a good teacher to have if you want to actually learn english
doesn't teach any english-related things at all.. her classes are all unrelated to what we should be learning. she's also biased and tends to single people out.
i find some of the comments she makes somewhat disturbing? and what's up with her trying to promote her clubs?and trying to force us into donating our money for her gain?and telling us to rate her positively in those feedback things? and asking us to nominate her for some award?SERIOUSLY?
An awesome professor! She uses a different teaching style from many other profs but I thought it was quite effective. She makes concepts easy to understand and was quite willing to go over concepts again if needed. Also, I found her very helpful and a fair marker.
Her class is really boring and tedious in the first half of the term, but the research teams and papers were quite interesting because Dr Paterson allows you to write and speak about things that interest you. As long as you keep up with the daily assignments (which I did not, and it hurt me in the end) you should do very well.
She is a nice person and you can tell she cares about her students, but she is terribly disorganized. People were asking how we should prepare for the exam and she pretty much refused to answer. And, for our research papers, she would constantly change criteria. It was very confusing but otherwise she tried to make the class interesting.
You know a class is going to be bad when you're encouraged to donate to charities and like videos the professor is involved in: totally inappropriate, given the student-teacher dynamic. Came away with a decent grade, but I would suggest avoiding her, if you can. Surprised her rating is so high when quality of instruction was so low. Learned little.
Erika is a very nice person, and easily accessible. My previous post was removed not sure why. This course was interesting and I liked the journaling work and the ability to be creative. However it was very confusing at times. Maybe as it was the first time she taught it online. The group project was very annoying.
i did not enjoy the facebook aspect of the course, the group project, or the general blog format. it seemed that the course lacked seriousness and there was a lot of forced engagement. perhaps these courses just don't work online. not sure if the prof's background is in literature. might explain some of the shortcomings.
ENGL301 was boring and tedious. Though it tried to teach some more up-to-date technical writing skills, it also teaches archaic ways of writing messages to people. Also, there are a ridiculous amount of assignments so you have to keep up or you will fall behind quickly.
Worst prof ever! She is very bias toward her favourite students which is evident when she selects the winner for the conference. Her feedback on assignments are of no help and her office hours are not very helpful either.
Expect 2-3 assignments due per week, plus ongoing work on a major report. There is no 'lull' in the frequency of assignments. There may easily be 100+ pages assigned to read in the textbook to complete one assignment (instead just search for examples/checklists). For the first month (before ppl calm down) expect a TON of FB notifications.
Dr. Paterson's online lessons are so poorly written that they are confusing at best and incomprehensible at worst. It is as if they were written in a mismanaged hurry and never proofed. There is very little feedback in the course, which is badly designed and structured. Dialogue between students is inhibited by the online platform used.
Erika has a poor attitude towards students unless you are a "favorite." She lacks tact when conversing with many of them. Also the course is poorly designed, which is unfair considering it's an online course. Yes, she has dyslexia, but spell check takes 3 seconds and the fact that she can't even do this shows a major lack in professionalism.
I thought this course would be interesting and I'd learn valuable tools to help with my future successes in job prospects. However you are essentially expected to do all of the work on your own with no clear instructions. You are basically told you are wrong at every turn and given no guidance. Not a course for those who need clarity.
Dr. Paterson is a nice lady. No need to read the whole textbook, just look up examples such as letters and resume. It shouldn't be a surprise to you but it's EASY to get an A if you FOLLOW the instructions. This course is fairly easy, even though I am horrible at English.
Prof is barely accessible and acts like she is doing a big favour by speaking to you. Does not listen or even fully read emails. The course is filled with mind-numbing busy work and it is archaic (ex. course teaches two-page resumes but one page is now the standard for young professionals). She can be hostile, and there are typos everywhere. Avoid!
Class was easy (just follow the textbook examples) when I took it but the prof was unprofessional. Sign up for Facebook was required for announcements about the course, email responses left questions unanswered, bad work was anonymously but publicly shamed, and she somehow lost all our grades while on vacation and had us send a copy back to her.
Paterson is a decent professor, but the course could be better organized, expectations could be made clearer and she could be more accessible via Canvas. LOTS of assignments including: application letter/package, student reflections, peer reviews, email memos, formal report, application package and web folio. Must use textbook to succeed.
Erika was unprepared to practice what they preached (their own lessons were riddled with grammar and spelling errors- getting someone to proofread and spell check, dyslexia or not, is a simple fix.) They gave no feedback, and students were not allowed to negatively criticise others' work. Not helpful.
Blamed me for not submitting a peer review when everyone's work was late but mine. I was unaware that they asked for an extension (as no one informed me) so of course when everyone posted late by a week she told me that I should have asked her for an extension on my peer review of a teammate but she already knew they had an extension?unprofessional
There are mental illness!
