I found a new appreciation for the English language after taking this course
Very nice person.
very helpfull I would take another one of her classes for sure
best prof ever made english seem easy
for the first couple of weeks I thought she was pretty cool, then the horns came out. I found her to be very insincere. When I asked her for help a few times I felt like a inconvienence. She also always mentions how teaching and marking take her away from her daughter, well we all have places we would rather be. Not clear on what she wants either
Best teacher i've ever had. Clear, intersting, funny, more than willing to help, and she knows what she's talking about. My writing improved 10 fold in a matter of weeks.
Best teacher i've had. If you come to class ready to participate and prepared, and not like a retarded dunce (like most of the kids in my class). Would strongly reccomend.
Overall Erika was a good teacher. She was clear as to what she expected and if you did that the class was a breeze. If you visit her during office hours she's eager to help.
The standard measure of correctness messed me up. She is such a hard marker because of that. I felt like all my essay were terrible. She is willing to help and has great enthusiasm. But english is such a boring class!
I'm not very good/slash don't like English, but Erika was very helpful, she taught you exactly what you needed to know, and was fair with marks. I would recommend her if you have to take 1112, I heard other teachers were way harder and taught stuff you didn't need to know.
super!
Fantastic! Attend class, participate and you'll learn all those things you "should have learned in grade school" and more. This class can build your confidence in your english skills. This is the kind of teacher i'd ask what else she teacher because i'm sure she'd rock that course too.
WORST TEACHER EVER! I liked english before Erika. I have never felt more stupid or incompetent in my life, not to mention that my mother has never yelled at me the way she yelled at the class. I always left her class feeling like I would never do anything with my life, let alone pass english.
She'll teach you "everything you should have learned in high school" and more! Fair marker and very easy to talk to. Give you a chance to speak your mind in group talk sessions. Definately get her if you have the chance!
Excellent teacher. Erika outlines everything you need to do to get an A in the class. She is very helpful and always open to throwing ideas around. Erika wants you to succeed in her class and you can tell she cares about the students. If you get a chance to take a class with her you should do so.
exelent understanding on corse and topics covred
awesome teacher helps you understand and always willing to help
Excellent instructor
Great teacher. She's approachable and really fair. She managed to run out of content towards the end of the course because she front loaded the course a bit but by that point we were all happily writing essays :)
Absolutely wonderful! High school teachers had made me hate english, but Erika made me love it again! She is so nice, very helpful, tells you exactly what is needed to get a good mark, and writes useful comments on your work so that you can improve. I wish my program had more english requirements just so I could take another class with her!
She simply is, a GREAT teacher and wants EVERYBODY to do well in the course
Fantastic teacher! She was always wiling to help, and she actually made me enjoy English for once..
At first I wasn't sure how I felt about Erika because she's very direct and abrupt and I wasn't used to that with my profs. Once I got used to her though, I absolutely loved having her as an instructor. She doesn't drag things out or dumb you down, she marks fairly, she's helpful, and she's absolutely hilarious. Take ENGL with her if you can!
Fantastic and dry-witted. Taught me stuff I didn't know I didn't know.
Very helpful, honest, blunt, to the point and a great teacher. She provides feedback and gives good advice. I would recommend her. She may be a hard bargain at the beginning but once you get used to her, she's awesome and makes English fun and exciting. I enjoyed her class very much. Tried getting her for 1101 but the waiting list was extensive.
She likes to work with groups and get the class discussing. She is quite exuberant and out there but is not afraid to state her opinion.
Watters is amazing. She is really open to imaginative writing and won't shy away from any topic. I wrote an essay on how to steal a banana from a monkey and I received an A. I like how she encourages group discussions rather than just lecturing and writing on the board. She is also very clear, concise and is always willing to help you.
There is no reason to treat adults like children. Teach the material and respect your students and you will get the respect back.
My favourite professor. She made every concept that was so foreign to be crystal clear in no time. And to clarify further she gave up 100 examples of what NOT to do, and 100 examples of what TO do. She's witty, funny, brilliant and well organized. I will be applying early next year to ensure she is my teacher again.
Erika is a really good English teacher! She really knows how to get the class engaged and everybody ends up learning lots. She also has a great personality. Definitely recommended!
I loved her. She is a wonderful teacher. I highly recommend her class.
Erika was a fantastic teacher. Definitely the best english teacher i have ever had. She is quite humorous, and innovative with the material, which makes a boring subject like english bearable.
Very fun teacher. Kept the class interesting.
Loved her class. One of my best ever teachers.
Erika is an amazing prof!!! I learned more in class than I have in any English class I have ever taken. You need to work hard, but she is more than willing to meet with you to help you. Love her!!!
Awesome prof, used a workbook instead of textbook which was aprox. $20.00. Always made class worth coming to. Would highly recommend.
A thought-provoking instructor who genuinely wants you to leave each lecture with more knowledge than you came in with. Has great opinions but also respects differing views. This instructor takes her cue from Dead Poets Society. Did not consider taking many ENGL courses before this one. But now I'll search for her classes in upcoming semesters.
Erika is very straightforward. She teaches from a small coursepack she designed. If you attend class regularily and contribute you will do very well. Highly recommended.
I hate english.... but she made me enjoy it!
Even if you hate English (which I do) take her. She tries to make it as interesting as possible with her good sense of humor. She is a tough marker but she helps you as much as she can. Would recommend! P.S. She uses a little coursepack which is only like 20 bucks. Well worth it.
I love Erika's class. She makes the class interesting. Ask for help and she'll gladly help you. As long as you do what she wants you'll get an A.
I took her class cause all these comments are saying she's great but I totally regret taking this class because she is a hard marker and she expects a lot from you. And her tests are hard as well. She must be nice but I'm not a fan, that's all.
Very good at explaining.
Erika was an amazing prof. Highly recommend
She doesn't provide the best feedback, and even the feedback that she provides is illegible to read.
Amazing professor. Took her GNED 1401 class and the morning lectures which usually put me to sleep were instead some of the most amazing lectures I have ever had. She is the best professor I have ever had and even though I am not in English, I would take her classes just for the fun factor.
Great professor. Goes in depth to give important and useful feedback. Provides a nice and colourful assortment of readings throughout the course to keep it interesting.
An amazing prof! Not that easy of a marker but if you're there for class discussions then it will definitely help you get a better grade!
Amazing prof! Erika is kind, intelligent and knows her stuff. I considered myself a poor writer before but feel i have improved. She expects a lot but thats what makes you better. She is approachable and always available for feedback. Two small tests, three essays and you don't have to buy a text book. If you can take her, do.
Although she is a hard marker, Erika is an excellent professor.
Very specific (ex: you will loose marks if you centered your title and she didn' want it centered). Assignment descriptions have many many pages with lists of requirements for each one. Provides clear understanding in class, repeats things multiple times. With her lists of requirements there's no way you cant not know an assignment needs something.
Erika was fantastic! Her class was engaging and informative. She went out of her way to be available for students. She gave detailed feedback for every paper I submitted alongside positive encouragement. You can tell she is passionate about teaching. I would 100% take another class with her.
Erika is helpful, constructive and easily approachable. She explains how she wants her papers done and even goes over your paper beforehand to help point out what could be improved. Don't miss class because she explains everything she expects then.
I took GNED1401 with Erika this past winter semester and LOVED having her as a prof. She makes a basic GNED course interesting and extremely relevant to real life. Incredibly down to earth and understanding; will go out of her way to help students succeed. She really goes above and beyond what is expected and I HIGHLY recommend taking her class!
Erika is amazing and has inspired me to become a better and more diligent reader and writer. I had this class in a late 6-9 block but I always looked forward to it. I would absolutely take her classes again and again if it were not for her being a tough grader, I consistently received 60s on my essays while getting 80s/90s in other classes.
Yes, Erika is kind and intelligent but she is a very hard marker. Most of the essays and test in her class were consistently in 60s/70s. Achieved one A in her class on the term paper, felt like I succeeded climbing mount Everest. She likes discussion, uses specific instructions. do not use secondary sources in your papers unless she specifies.
Erika is a pretty good prof, her class is fairly lecture heavy but her lectures are mostly interesting and participation based. She is very helpful as a prof and gives specific grading criteria.
(Class: ENGL-1152) I always looked forward to her class every time. I had a consistent B average, which is pretty standard for myself. She inspires you enough to give you the drive and interest you need to succeed in class. She will make you think more profoundly about life. 350 Characters is definitely not enough to describe how amazing Erika is.
Awesome prof in terms of creating engaging lectures, having very clear criteria and having a useful course pack however, a ridiculous grader. I was consistently receiving many high A+ in other courses and struggling with B/C in Erika's. Feedback on assignments is vague and doesn't support the harsh grades given out.
Erika is an amazing English professor. The texts in this class were intellectually stimulating and Erika always added great insight. Her expectations are clear and she gives great feedback on essay's. She is everything you could want in a professor.
Erika does not realize that this class is an intro, she marks as if you are fourth years. Extremely rude, not reliable, office smells like pot, treats students as if they are stupid, lectures drag on. Overall AWFUL. Would not recommend 100%
To be honest, Erika is a tough grader. She does not even provide her rubric, and her coursepack is not really helpful. Also, she often says that she doesn't understand questions asked by her students even their questions are very clear. I don't recommend her.
Two words: VERY CLEAR! Erika explains everything crystal clearly. She is intersting and a pleasure to be taught by. The workload is very acceptable, always with something to do but never overwealming. She is awesome and I can't wait to take another class with her. Take any class with her, you'll be pleased!
Took her class a few years ago through link between BCHS and MRU. She is easygoing and open minded. Found it easy to listen to her even through 2 hour lectures. Marked like any other prof, I received B to A on all my papers. Found there was one essay too many for the semester though. Gave us chances to participate and be involved.
Absolutely loved Erika's class. She was extremely clear on exactly what she was looking for and how each paper should be structured, but also was completely open to any topic. Course load was manageable, and as the semester went on, the class discussions became more interesting. Definitely recommend!!!
Although this course is pretty content heavy she does a great job making sure her students understand the assignments given and she is always willing to meet outside of class! Even though attendance isn't mandatory it is helpful to attend as she explains concepts more clearly in class.
Erika is an amazing teacher she made a dry subject on writing and made it interesting and exciting. You need the booklet she wrote to do well but listen to lectures and take notes on what she says and writes down. Use your notes to guide you in your essays and you will do good in the class!! She is very straightforward in what she wants.
Erika is a difficult grader, but I can honestly say that her class was one of the most beneficial courses I've taken at MRU. Her classes are interesting. She likes to have class discussions about many topics, some of which are controversial. Most importantly, this class will prepare you for university level writing.
Erika is so wholesome! She gives me the sweet aunt vibe because her lectures are engaging and she cracks jokes here and then. Aside from that, she's a fairly strict marker but she gives you really good feedback in bettering your writing. She also goes above and beyond and is willing to set up appointments with you to talk about assignments.
I don't understand why there are even bad ratings for Erika. She is by far my favourite teacher at MRU. Sure she is a tough marker, but that is because she looks for applied knowledge from her lectures, so don't skip. She is clear and precise in her lectures, and her course materials are extremely useful. Most importantly, she is extremely caring.
Erika is a wonderful prof. Though she is a tough grader, the feedback she gives is really helpful to improve for next time, and there are several quizzes that can boost your grade. The way she teaches really prepares you well for university level writing. Erika is a very sweet person and it's evident that she really cares about all her students :-)
Although Erika on the surface seems kind, she ruined my first semester as a new university student. I went to her with questions about marks I felt were low and she lowered them even more out of spite. She only replies in emails to make you feel incompetent. I received A's in every other writing class except hers. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
If you really want to take advantage of this class, draft your essays early and turn them in for feedback. Erika formats the course to give you plenty of time do this and make edits before turning in a final draft. It is optional, but if you are not confident in your work I highly recommend it. If you stick to her instructions youll be fine.
Erika is an extremely hard marker for a first year GNED course. Her lectures are extremely boring as she rambles on for most of it. I wish I took the course with a different teacher because she has unrealistic expectations. The only benefit to her class is that you can submit rough drafts of your essays for feedback prior to actual deadline.
At first Erika seems like a very nice person. In which outside of university I'm sure she is. But in class, she doesn't tend to give helpful advice if help was needed. I wanted feedback on my paper, but all she did was tell me where I had went wrong and made me feel guilty for it. She doesn't provide clear rubrics which makes her assignments harder
She seems very nice when you first meet her but the moment the papers come up, she's impossible to satisfy. You have to listen to lectures because she's very picky on papers and she fails if it's not her way.
Erika is a very sweet prof. People that are complaining about her being a tough grader need to pull up their big boy/girl pants. She makes it sooo clear what she expects and gives lots of time to meet with her and get your work edited. I went from almost a C to an A in a matter of weeks just because I asked for help and found her style of marking!
Erika is super sweet. She is a bit of a tough grader but I think it's fair. The PowerPoints were only useful for the basic stuff. The textbook was pretty useful. She just read off the PowerPoints and answered questions so the class was a little boring.
Although her lectures were a little boring as she reads off of the Powerpoint, they were pretty helpful to improve your academic writing. Recommend taking this class if you're a little rough or uncertain with using grammar mechanics (hyphens, dash, semi-colon, etc.).
Erika was easily my best prof this semester. She's super accommodating to life schedules by giving big time periods for tests, quizzes, and essays. Her teaching style also accommodates different kinds of learners. Clear information online and in the course pack as well as lectures. Tough grader but not much reason to do poorly in her class.
Great prof! She's kind and funny and teaches the concepts in a very straightforward manner with great slides. Open book D2L tests for grammar. She's there for any help you need, will give feedback on papers if you request it and gives 3 consecutive days as deadlines for each paper. Participate in class discussions! It's so much more fun if you do!
Erika's a good prof, funny and chill. the textbook is $12 which is another bonus. my only issue is the midterm and final are handwritten, yes, handwritten. idk why that is but it really ruined the class for me. also a paper is assigned last week of classes so that was another thing.
Boring class, reads off powerpoint. The final and midterm was handwritten and you don't get a lot of time for it. This isn't a grade booster class and I felt that I didn't learn what I was expecting to learn in the course. Not worth the stress
Erika is such a sweet lady. If you try your best on assignments and she knows your trying she will try her best to help! She goes through things many times which may make the lesson a bit dry but it really helps for her tests (her quizzes were easy too). Midterm\final are handwritten and you have to sorta memorize an essay for the final.
THIS CLASS IS A WOLF IN SHEEP CLOTHING. The class is easy for the first half, but gets irrevocably boring and hard in the second half. Erika gives phenomenal feedback and makes herself very accessible to students, in and outside of class. Try not to skip halfway through bc you wont stop lol
Good lectures, lots of quizzes but online, heavy on the writing, marks pretty tough but will help you if you reach out.
I don't recommend this class there are other English classes that much easier.she is very tough grader
Erika is an amazing prof . She is always accessible after class. Despite the content being dry she makes it fun and engaging. She really cares about her students and makes this class and easy GPA booster. There is a bunch of little mini quizes, 1 mid term and the final. All of which are super easy if you do some light studying.
While her lectures are a little boring, she marks fair and tells you exactly what she expects on papers and how to respond to questions on exams. She's not particularly caring or inspiring, but then again, she doesn't have to be. Pretty average class.
The class only requires a $12 course pack from the bookstore and no textbook which was really nice. She is a wonderful prof and seems to genuinely care about her students. I had a couple of emergencies happen during the semester and she was very helpful getting me caught up on the lectures I missed. Would highly recommend taking a class with her.
Erika is a very tough grader, its a first year class and she marks like you are taking 4th year classes. I have never had this low of a grade, she is an awful teacher. stay away from her class.
I found Ericka to be a tough grader and unfair. She does allow you to schedule private meetings with her to go over your essay, but she critiques your work more than actually giving helpful feedback. I would not recommend this class as a grade booster.
Erika is a caring and supportive prof who truly wants her students to succeed. She's very accessible for help and gives clear expectations for each assignment and exam. Deadlines are flexible and accommodating. That said, however, she is a tough grader and you will need to put in effort to succeed. Overall a fantastic prof.
She is a very tough marker. Do not take her class as a gpa booster.
Erika is such a nice prof, she honestly cares about her students. Her lectures are engaging and made a writing class very easy!
