Great Class, I recommend taking her. She knows her stuff and is helpful if you put forth the effort!
Takes a rather simple concept and makes it unnecessarily difficult. You could fail her class by missing one question on a quiz. Literally. Stupid grading system. Glad I had Chem i and ii in high school, otherwise i'd be lost.

Teacher is very knowledgeable in Chemistry. She does a good job teaching. She covers everything needed to be covered for the test, however sometimes she makes things a little more complicated than they need to be.
Didn't understand her very well. She doesn't really seem to want to help you if you are struggling. Would NEVER take her for this class ever again.
Fairly good teacher..she explains everything well using examples. They have a study lab open to students that helped alot. The grading system sucks though - you can miss an entire question on a test for miscounting sigfigs, or forgetting units - when there are only 5 questions on the tests- its a lot of points. What happened to partial credit???
Dr. Battin is slightly condescending sometimes but knows her stuff and teaches it decently. Always available during office hours. The class is extremely well-organized and structured - but just to note all 110 courses follow the same program. Weekly quizzes make up most of your grade rather than huge exams. (By the way, 70-100% final grade is an A)
Studied 60+ hours, had chem I and II in high school, i know what the hell is going on, it's not rocket science. But her final didn't comprehensively test understanding of material, she just made it tooooo hard. Ended up w/ a C. Took a chem 115 practice final amd made 100%. Much harder than need be. just ridiculous. Horrible.
She is very understanding if you have any problems and is always helpful during office hours. If you give her respect and communicate with her she will greatly return the same. As long as you know the material in and out you can do fine on the tests. The online homework she gives is the best for preparing for tests and understanding the material.
She is a really good teacher and explains everything very well. Very helpful during office hours and is willing to help those who try. You definitely need to study for this class, but if you know your stuff up and down, her exams aren't that mad. Would recommend her for any chem class.
Two words best describe Professor Battin: Arrogant and Condesending. She thinks that she it the only person who knows how to do chemistry. I would definately recomend taking someone else for chem 115. If at all possible try to take Professor Schraf He is the best chem teacher up at WVU.
Very mean...made me cry during the first week!( i explained why i did a certain problem and she replied"well that is not the intelligent thing to do"BASICALLY calling me STUPID! hated her every since...but good teacher explains really well just not personable..tests are hard YOU MUST STUDY AND KNOW YOUR STUFF.
If you have a bad opinion of Dr. Batting its likely bc you are stupid and failed the class. I thought she was great! She made a difficult subject easy to comprehend.
I thought Dr. Battin was an awesome Chem professor. She gladly helped anyone who went to her office hours for extra help and was very nice while there. If you have to take a chemistry class, I'd definitely take her! She made a difficult subject easy to understand. I thought she was a really nice lady; she just wants her students to try hard.
Ugh! I didn't like her class at all! She was very condescending and was no help at all if you were struggling. I would definately try to take another professor if you can. Boo!
Dr. Battin was a great professor. If you come to class & pay attention, you can learn everything without opening the book. Tests were somewhat tricky but not impossible. I totally recommend taking her for chem 115!
Class is hard. She really knows her stuff. If you ask her to help you outside of class she will. honestly i could not stay awake in class(slept everyday but 3 all year), all i did was study and i got an A in the class
Class was unbearably hard. I'm in the honors college and spend literally 6-10 hours a week with a tutor and study alone and in a small group and still barely passed the class.
Single hadedly the worst teache ri have ever had for any sceince based class. She would teach the basics and then we would be forced to on homework, labs and tests doall of the advanced math and conversions without having been taught them i tell all who unfortunetly recieve her as a teacher to switch out immedietly or you will fail this class
Dr. Battin is an awesome professor who always puts her students first. She knows her material and teaches in a way that is enthusiastic and attractive. U have to show up and pay attetion-which is not difficult due to her good looks-but if u put the effort in you'll be fine. Tests are somewhat difficult, but definitely fair. Great class, must take!
Battin was one of the best chem teachers I've had so far. She spoke clearly and her handwriting was easy to read. The test required a good amount of studying but weren't too crazy. I would definately recommend her to anyone.
This class was very difficult. I usually love chemistry because I understand it; but with this professor I spent hours outside of the classroom studying and attended small group sessions weekly. The class notes were near useless as she only taught the basic concepts and then hammered us with time consuming problems on both the homework and tests.
Very nice, she is a good prof. Her class gets kind of boring from time to time, but she will help you out and if try you can get a C to the least. Her tests are hard, so prepare.
She is a fantastic teacher. I am really not a fan of any of the chemistry professors at WVU besides her.
horrible
This class is way too hard. I like Battin but she has an attitude sometimes. She'll help you if you ask her questions but this class sucks really bad. Too bad it's mandatory.
Honestly, the worst chemistry professor I have ever had. She has called students dumb, also told students that she thinks they will fail her class etc. If you want to do good in her class I recommend going to her class to see what topics are covered and sitting in another professors class who can teach. Her test are very tricky too.
I had her Fall 2010. She definitely isn't an easy teacher, but she knows her chemistry and teaches it well. You have to study for the exams, as those aren't easy either. I wish I could have taken her for 116, but she didn't teach it the semester I took it.
She's an amazing teacher. Her tests are not exactly the easiest but she knows her subject too well and is very helpful. I wish i could take her for 116 too. But im looking forward to having her for my other classes sometime soon
She does a pretty good job maneuvering through the material and the tests aren't overly ridiculous, but she forgot the golden rule of never calling on the girl with the weave. P.S. Don't buy the book.
She was very helpful. While the class was difficult, any chemistry 115 class is. She was very nice and helpful and extremely smart. Her online notes are the greatest help along with the practice exams she posts before the test. She does things in a timly manner and does not leave anything out. Very good teacher. I recommend.
She was a very clear and organized teacher. Her tests were tough, but she prepared you for them if you went to class. I would recommend her to anyone.
DO NOT EVER TAKE FOR ORGANIC CHEM! Over 65% of the class dropped or failed. Does not know how to make an exam! Hourly exams were 15 pages long, and the final was an unbelievable 28 pages! I walked into the final with an 87% class average, walked out with a 74% C. Didnt even come close to finishing the final, and she made it worth 33% of class grade
Worst professor I have ever had. Our class' test scores were the lowest the University has every seen for the subject. DO NOT take her
She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Her homework load is about 2-3 hours a night, our class average is horrible, and her tests are nothing like our classwork. She is one of the most condescending people to ask a question to, and shes just a mean person. Do NOT take her.
Interesting teacher. Fun to listen to during class
Dr. Battin is a very clear and organized teacher. She uses great power points to go over the material; she's funny in class as well. I would highly recommend taking her; she is the best teacher teaching 115!
Very smart teacher and easy to understand, but she is a very hard teacher and not at all nice. Tests were not similar to any hw problems and she is very condescending if people don't understand her class. She also acts very hostile in class as if she doesn't want to be there. Don't take her unless you are GOOD with chemistry
Teaches the material extremely well and very easy to understand. However, not helpful and can have an attitude at times if you cross her. Generally though, she is a fair professor and can be rather funny in lecture. Tests are not too terribly hard if you study, and she provides a study guide. I would reccommend her compared to the other professors.
She was a great teacher. Teaches from her powerpoints and provides many examples to learn from. Aleks homework was more reasonable than the other Chem 115 teachers. Only due once a week and she made sure it matched what was taught in class. Do not buy the textbook though because we never used it. Save that money! She was great
She was a very effective teacher, and funny and sarcastic enough in class to keep students interested. Don't do anything to cross her, though.
She is a terrible teacher and very repetitive. She has no remorse for being inconsiderate! She does not know what she is doing
Average teacher. If you studied and understood what was gone over in class, it was an easy A or B class. Mandatory attendance. Class attendance recommended. Tests weren't too bad, but studying is highly recommended!!
Dr. Battin is an amazing professor. Yes this class is difficult but it is chemistry! Her exams are VERY VERY straightforward but she does try to trick you a little to get you thinking. I would highly recommend Dr. Battin over the other professors. Just study hard and go to her office hours and you will easily get a B.
Hard class and a good bit of work but if you keep up, it is an easy A. Her exam questions are almost identical to the lecture slide examples. She gives bonus at the end of the semester too. Mandatory attendance, she takes it EVERY time.
Dr. Battin is the best Chemistry 115 professor at WVU. Since it is a Chemistry course you definitely need to work for a good grade, but she is very helpful during office hours. She gives bonus if you attend most classes!
All I got to say is take Dr. Battin!!! She is an amazing professor. She seems strict but if you actually take notes and listen to her her exams are identical to what she shows you in class. Never any surprises. Never any tricks. Best professor in the Chem department. Chem 115 is not easy so you can not expect this class to be easy.
Dr. Battin is an awesome professor! all it takes is 30 minutes of looking over power points, and taking notes during class and you will be fine. She also is always wiling to help, and offers numerous study groups. Keep in mind that chemistry is a hard science and should not be seen as a blow off class.
Chem 115 is a horrible class, let's be real. Battin makes it bearable, but in my opinion you'd be better off taking Mark Tinsley. She has a curriculum she's obligated to fulfill, and I realize that but she fits too much into one lecture and doesn't slow down for a second. She's alright, but if you're looking for an A you most likely won't get it.
Dr.Battin is great professor, she explains all the material really well. Attendance is mandatory! The tests are tricky, so MUST STUDY! In order to get an A in this class, you must do really well in lab and at least at A's or B's on tests, and do the class homework!
Personally victimized/embarrased me in front of 200+ person lecture hall for not knowing the answer to one question. The most degraded I've ever felt in my life. She's bitter and rushed me out of her office after asking for further on an explanation on an exam grade. The worst. Run away.
I ended up getting a C in her class. Being in the lecture I thought the class was easy, but when the exams came up I kept getting poor grades the labs were the only reason I was able to get a C. Fair warning if you don't think you can get a 40% on the accumulative final you might want to drop out before it's too late.
I had Ming Ming Xu first semester and failed the class with a 39%. I decided to try again this semester with Dr. Battin and it was so much clearer and she was very helpful. Go to class because she takes attendance EVERY lecture, and also don't leave class early because she WILL call you out and you will lose points. Take this teacher!
Dr. Battin is an awesome professor. She loves chemistry, which makes it much easier to learn. The class is manageable if you put the work in (a lot of work). Exams are sometimes tricky, just make sure you read all of the questions VERY thoroughly.
She's not bad. She doesn't put up with crap and she makes that very clear. If you go to class and pay attention she's not bad. Study for at least 3 days for the tests, don't cram the night before. Provides study guides for tests. Nice if you talk to her like you have some sense.
she kicked me out of her office because of a technical issue that i couldn't resolve, refused to help me learn and understand the material, used offensive language just because i didn't agree with what she was saying, and kicked me out of several labs for not completing my lab assessment ( i didn't know because i registered late for the course).
Great teacher, but her tests were so hard. Didn't score over a 70 on any of them. She's a good lecture teacher, but her tests are full of trick questions. When asking for help she was completely useless. She never responds to emails and doesn't answer any questions you have after class is dismissed. definitely a hardass. DON'T TAKE HER
A great professor but a hard class. If you put in the work she'll help you with anything.
Outstanding professor and pretty easy A or B. Just keep up on your a leks and really make sure you understand the concepts. We never used the book so don't waste your time. Show up to class every day, participate, and do the homework---easy A.
The only reason people don't like Dr. Battin is because she doesn't put up with crap. If you aren't lazy, put in the work, and go to class, you will do fine. She is a great teacher, and is only rude to people who don't pay attention or come to class late. Take this class!!! She is great at explaining everything!
Dr. Battin left an everlong impression on me. She is an amazing professor. She is clear cut challenging. She will make you work for your grade and doesn't put up with any crap. If you show her you want to succeed she will help you. Exams are tough. Study hard. SHE WILL GET YOU PREPARED FOR THE DAT,MCAT, etc! Take Battin if you want to learn chem!!
Dr. Battin is an excellent professor. She takes attendance every day toward the end of lecture. Attendance will act as 1% of your grade if you miss less than 3 or fewer days, letter grades are deducted for 5 or more absences. Tests are tough and thorough, but doable if you study at least 3 days before the exams. She will help you if you ask!
Dr. Battin is very clear in her teaching. If you pay attention in class, you should understand the material very well. She goes over things multiple times to ensure everyone understands. She seems unapproachable at times but if you go to her office hours she's really helpful. I enjoyed her class and her lectures were great.
The best teacher I have ever had so far, her tests are hard you must study alot to get an A . There is not enough time to finish the hourly test, so you have to hurry to finish it . Her final is alot easier than the hourly exams. She is really clear at explaining material. I highly recommend her
after teaching a subject in lecture, she goes through examples-be sure to copy and understand the problems, they will most likely be on the tests. if you don't understand something, I recommend going to her office hours because she will definitely help but be sure to go with questions ready. she is very easy going but gets straight to the point.
She was clear in class and lectures were easy to follow and understandable. but she is one of the rudest and meanest professors I have ever had.
If you're taking 115 you should be taking Battin or Mingming. I really liked Battin because she dumbed down the harder chem concepts that I had never understood before taking her class, and she was super approachable during office hours. She's pretty sarcastic in lecture, and has at least kicked out 3 people for being late, but she's good overall.
She will not help you if you request help outside of her office hours. She will not give retakes, extra credit, on an individual basis. The tests are worth most of your grade, and they are impossible. She has zero respect for students. SHE WILL YELL AT YOU.
Battin is one of the hardest teachers i've ever had. Her hourly exams are pretty hard. She explains her material too well in class but brings a very hard material in the exam. Also, she's rude.
Her tests are too hard, and she's kicked out a student for being late before which is bad in my opinion considering students pay her salary. This chem department as a whole is the most idiotic and ridiculous thing I've experienced in college. Take CHEM115 with someone else, or during the summer if you only need 115 and no other chem classes.
Hard teacher but excellent professor. Explains everything you need to know. Tests can be tricky but you're prepared for it. Definitely effective class
The worst teacher ever. She is very offensive and use very harsh language if you step by her office. She thinks that she never makes mistakes, so never tell her there is something wrong about the grade or the lecture because she will make you regret it. I was very uncomfortable taking the class with her. It was so stressful class. Don't take her!!!
Make sure you go to her office hours if you have any questions with exams or lab grades. ALEKS is a pain but if you keep up with it throughout the week it isn't too bad. Just make sure you complete it all before the semester is over because those are easy points. Her lectures are fantastic because she really knows her stuff. Overall, she is great!
Really great professor. Lectures were easy to follow, not too fast either. She explains things well and is always willing to answer questions and explain things to you.
I went to talk to her, and she's very condescending. She talks down to a lot of the people in my class that go to her during office hours. Her notes are ok. It helped me to print out the notes and use Google to figure out the work.
Very thorough on the material during lectures and lets you know exactly what you need to know! Maybe boring for someone who has recently taken chem in HS but for someone who needs a GOOD refresher, she's absolutely who you should take this class with.
If you plan on being in the ROTC program do not take her, I have had horrible experiences with here over having to miss class and she can just be a rude person overall. Her lecture are good if you can move as fast as she can and don't get bored during them but the test are ridiculous
Her tests are very tough! But she is very organized and knowledgable about chemistry!
Hard exams but she's a little bit helpful
Professor Battin is truly a great teacher. She is extremely well organized and great at breaking down complex topics into a way that anyone can understand them. Do your homework, be proactive during lectures, and come to class and you should not fail. She is deliberate and has a great sense of humor! Battin has really made me love chemistry.
She can be a bit sarcastic at times but don't take it personally. She really knows her stuff and she lectures well. Tests are definitely very hard. In order to do well on the tests you have to do a lot of extra work on top of what is assigned. Labs are easy and worth 25% of the final grade so lab can be your saving grace.
Dr. Battin is a very excellent teacher. She is a very tough teacher and has you work for a good grade, but she is very clear in her lectures and really knows her stuff.
Very clear teacher. Thoroughly explains all topics and make sure you pay attention. ALWAYS show up to class on time or she will kick you out if you are only five minutes late. Go to every class or you will be lost.
Dr. Battin was extremely rude. While her lectures were very clear and the online notes she provided were very helpful, I dreaded the class every time I had to go. I would not take her class again.
Came off as kind of intimidating, but if you go to her office hours she will help you. She gives well detailed powerpoint notes and study guides before tests that helped immensely. Homework has unlimited tries and is equal to a test grade so easy points that help a lot. Attendance gives extra 1% or takes away if you miss a lot!
She's a good teacher and all but I felt like she was out to trick us more than help us. The tests were extremely hard and I was happy to get C's if I could. Just beware of her tricks and the excessive amount of homework.
I wouldn't take her again. When I went to her office hours she wasn't helpful. If you don't know something she treats you like an idiot. If you have the option I wouldn't take her.
BEST teacher I have had in college thus far! Very good at explaining things, and VERY organized. She would have my test grade posted before I was even out of lab. Lowest test grade was a 90% because there was never anything that I didn't understand!
I retook Battin under the D/F repeat, I had Mingming my first go around and I've gotta say, Battin is superior in every single way. Her willingness to be aggressive towards disruptive students is very helpful in a concept heavy course like chemistry and her powerpoints and all the study material she gives you for exams is incredibly helpful.
Be careful and do not underestimate her for she will kill your grade if you don't watch out. But she does warn you.
Hard class. You need to stay up with materials overall tests were fair if you studied. She is intimidating to talk to at first but she is really helpful and a really good teacher. She is a good teacher! However, she doesn't like students who are disrespectful she will put you in your place. NEVER COME IN LATE!
Dr. Battin is a great professor! Always make sure you are in lecture because she goes through many examples that will help you understand the homework and prepare for the exams. She does not like when students show up to class late. She will make sure to pause class to tell you to leave if you come in late.
Can't use a computer during class to take notes which would be so easy to copy the notes down on the powerpoint instead of printing them out. Test are 25 questions and very difficult.
I took Dr. Battin's brief organic course, and it made me love chemistry. Show up to class and study as often as she recommends, and you'll pass.
Dr. Erin Battin is a good teacher. She makes everything clear. But when taking her exams, you won't be happy with it. She brings a lot of questions in the tests that she never discussed in class. If you come to the class after the first 5 minutes, you will be expelled from the class. The average of the students' test's in her class less than 60%.
I took Dr. Battin over the summer and though the class was fast paced and hefty material, she delivered thorough lectures. Tests are typically 20 questions so there is little to no room for error but if you go to class and study they aren't incredibly difficult.
can't talk, can't. use laptops or ipads or even have headphones on your desk. never had a teacher with such a huge power trip. i've seen kids get kicked out for using their ipads for notes and for asking others quiestuon about her terrible explanations. stay away
Dr. Battin is very knowledgable about chemistry and explains things as simple as possible. She does expect you to work for your grade and has no mercy on tests. Just don't be lazy and ask questions if you're struggling.
Dr. Batiin is nice and willing to help if liked but the grading scale is way to hard. Its designed for you to fail the class. Buy the buy if you have her and do all the practice problems if you want to understand the material. Also if you're late don't bother showing up. Shell kick you out with no hesitation. I though id be fine but guess not.
Battin is A great professor. She is not someone to mess around with though!! The class is very difficult but the quizzes are fair if you actually do the problems. I study on average 4hours a week. No need for more than that because if you pay attention she makes sure you understand. Seriously don't come in late though she will kick you out.
This has to be the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not care about her students or have an interest in helping them. she teaches for herself and gets off on being egotistical and having power over her students. Disregards questions, doesn't answer emails, refuses to help in any way. Honestly she is just a bad person
Terrific professor who will not take crap from anyone. Quite a few people will get kicked out, if you are more than five minutes late she will make you leave. She is a very straight forward, my way or the highway kind of person so there is no talking her into rounding your grade "you get what you earn". Get ready to work, tests are tough.
The most difficult class I've taken. Ever. But here's what you need to know Battin's tests and assignments are exponentially harder than every other Chem prof's at WVU. Same course material, much more difficult tests If you have a choice, TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR, purely to save your grade and not have to repeat this class Wish I knew before
Great teacher. Terrible person. She is condescending and basically wants the students to fail. She explains things well but doesn't make the tests like the questions she explains. Her tests are unnecessarily difficult compared to literally every other professor and she doesn't give extra credit so your grade suffers because of it. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She is gifted in chemistry, but awful at preparig you for exams. I had friends who made As with other professors that didnt give test nearly as her and were likely better at lecturing. She is not a well round professor and I would not recommend.
Professor is a pretty good teacher, but not a very nice person. She doesn't seem to actually like teaching much, and doesn't seem to like students at all. This course has a LOT of homework, and in addition you should practice a lot of problems if you want a chance of passing exams. If you're late, don't even bother going to class. Good luck.
Dr. Battin is a great professor, however, she is inconsiderate to feelings. For Chem 115, you really have to work to get a good grade. Out of all the professors her exams are the hardest, but makes you do better on the final. You can't go to her asking for extra credit, she will say its your fault and deserve the grade you tried for.
Honestly learned more from her in one day than a whole year of gen chem. Amazing prof and if you go to class and print off PowerPoints and take notes on them pretty easy A. Get ahold of old exams to help practice.
I took her once for Chem110A and she was awful, but I have her rn for Chem115 over the summer and I must say, she was a solid choice. She's less intense and more thorough with her work. I guess because it's the summer she's less stressed out thus making her less condescending? Either way, she knows her stuff, so I highly recommend.
I really struggle with chemistry, and Dr. Battin made it great for me. She is very very strict, you can not be late, you can not be on your phone, and you have to study or you will fail. She is very strict about a lot of rules, however she is absolutely right about most, and I thrived in her class because she thoroughly explains things.
Battin is kind of a mean person. Rude to students, and has unnecessarily strict rules. The biggest problem with Battin is how absurdly difficult her exams are compared to every other chem professor at the school. She makes them ridiculous and the homework doesnt prepare you at all for the exams. Take someone other than her
Erin Battin is a great lecturer, I will give her credit for that. But she sucks when it comes to everything else. She can be rude and condescending towards students, and has a stressful class environment. Battins biggest flaw are the exams. Good lord she makes her exams so unnecessarily hard compared to any other chem professor its ridiculous
Very rude and exams are made to trick you. DO NOT TAKE.
Worst Teacher i have ever had. She has taught me nothing and I am learning this material for the first time.
I think she lectures great, and has great PowerPoints. However, shes rude, straight mean, and does not care whether her students pass. Tests are hardest in the chem program and she has the lowest passing rate. Would not recommend unless youre ready to feel stupid.
Her lectures aren't awful, but she is completely insensitive and has zero respect for any and all of her students. Her tests are absolutely insane compared to what she goes over in lecture. SWITCH PROFS IF POSSIBLE. It is not worth the headache. If you so happen to be stuck with her do NOT be late to class, you'll be publicly humiliated.
Dr. Battin is not approachable at all. If you ask a question she acts like you are stupid for asking. Her exams are insane compared to what she teaches/the examples she gives in lecture. She does pop-tests during your exam block, so it is like having a test every week. She also doesn't tell you about these so check your email religiously.
Erin Battin is not a caring person who will go out of her way to help a student. She is easily aggravated and yells in class with little to no provoking. Definitely do not recommend this class for anyone.
Dr. Battin is the most difficult chemistry professor at WVU. She yells at students in lecture for asking questions and assumes everyone knows what they're doing when teaching a new topic. At office hours, she just tells you to change your study habits and print the powerpoints to use as notes. She also tells you to read ANY textbook. DONT TAKE HER!
Battin is not interested in inspiring you. Battin is not interested in helping you pursue your interest in chemistry. Battin is not interested in passing you. Chem 115 is a weeder class, and she will consider it a favor to her profession to forcibly remove you from it, apparently without having realized that this class is required for all engineers
Dr. Battin is brilliant, but she isn't the most understanding professor. If you want to get a good grade in this class, you're going to need to put in a lot of work. This class isn't easy, but I find her to be a good professor. She thoroughly explains most things, but this class will require extra effort as she doesn't just hand the grade to you.
Dr. Battin is great at lecturing, but don't think that is all you need for the tests. Start by going to tutoring and recitation early on, even if you think you don't need it (you do). The tests are traps and the classroom environment is so stressful. I hope to never see chemistry again. Definitely my worst class of the semester.
Battin is a really knowledgeable professor but her class is literally insufferable. She is extremely strict and kicks people out of class. She also will call you out for being even few minutes late and don't even think about leaving early. She also spends way too much time on topics that should take about 5 minutes to learn.
Battin teaches what is on the exams, but often overcomplicates the theory behind certain topics. She will then oversimplify practice problems shown during lecture, later giving incredibly difficult problems on the same subject matter on the exams. Be prepared to practice varying difficulties of problems. Overall, isn't very friendly or approachable
Before taking Battin, I read the reviews on this site and decided to take the risk and go for this class. DONT DO IT!!! Her lectures are skewed to spend more time on ridiculously easy content, and she makes her exams way harder than they should be. About 1/2 of our class has flunked out. Also, she can be rude and intimidating.
Dr. Battin comes across as a very disrespectful professor. As the semester progressed, material got harder and it seemed like she was explaining topics less thoroughly. She has NO desire to help. Tried as hard as I could and still failed. The weights at the end of the semester were soul-crushing and she doesn't want to hear it. DON'T TAKE HER!
Battin gives you no room for error in her class and her exams are noticeably harder than any of the other CHEM 115 professors. Absolutely no extra credit offered so do well the first time around. Schedule with a different professor if possible. If you are any more than 5 mins late for class don't bother showing up as she will ask you to leave.
Her class seems impossible. I needed this class for my major and thankfully passed (barely). She makes chem way harder than it needs to be.
Dr. Battin is great at lecturing and teaching the material. However, the problems on exams were much more difficult than examples seen in lecture. She was helpful during recitation, and more friendly than in class. An A is achievable, but it requires a lot of work. I would recommend taking another instructor for 115.
Not a great Professor. My dorm room flooded and I had to move completely out within 5 hours but she gave us a pop test for out of class that night and it was only available for a specific time, so my friends and I that had her emailed her to see if we could do it the next day and she said take the F if you cant take it. Would not recommend.
Dr. Battin is a great lecturer and clearly explains topics. Follow her instructions before the exams -- study, study, study, and you'll be okay. She is not lenient in grading or attendance so beware, no EC and hard tests. Go to recitation, office hours and tutoring if you need help, just don't slack off in this class!
Dr. Battin is a tough Professor and runs a strict class but knows what she is doing. She is very clear about her expectations for class and what will be on the exams. Do all of your homework, practice and study for the exams, and take notes in class, and you will do fine. If you go to her office hours for help she's a lot less intimidating :)
Unapproachable. If you can avoid her class, it would be wise! Tests are difficult. If you are going to be late for class, just don't show up. You won't be welcome.
Battin is a great at teaching chemistry but isn't a great professor. She teaches the material and that is it. She does offer recitation (which is very helpful) but that is it. No EC at all. If you mess up on one test there's a big chance you wont get an A. Study a bunch and do the homework offered and you'll do fine.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Shes not bad at teaching but her exams are NOTHING like what she teaches in class. They are much more advanced and complicated. I studied for days and days, thinking I was well prepared then when the exams came, I had no idea what to do. She is also very mean and WILL kick you out of class! Dont be late & no devices
If you take Battin, you're going to have to work extremely hard. Exams are not easy, and you have to put in extra effort. If you are not willing to put in the effort, do not take this class as you will fail. She is not the most understanding professor, so don't expect her to be over sympathetic. Do what is asked of you & put in extra effort to pass
Quite frankly, Erin Battin is the personification of hell. She makes her tests intentionally and excessively difficult. When you get to the final, you'll be able to tell what the teacher wrote what questions. I took chem in HS and barely passed her class. Oh, and I got an 87 on the final because I knew how to do the "regular" teacher's problems.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Teaches in quite possibly the most boring and mundane way possible. The most unnecessarily difficult exams I have ever experienced. Exams are twenty times more complex than the examples she will go over in class. Final is made by all the professors, got a 98% on the final, compared to an 80 average onhers
If you have any chance to not take Erin Battin, DON'T.. She doesn't care about student success in the slightest, and frankly she is quite rude and disrespectful to students who have the courage to ask questions. If you do have her, it's possible to pass, but you have to put in *lots* of work. Use her study guides, they help a bit.
Battin is a strict teacher and her class is not something you'd expect for your first possible chem class. It is very lecture heavy and you really need to prepare for the exams. Those will make or break your grade. Attend every class and take notes. She also has a reputation of not being friendly outside of class if you aren't doing well, fyi.
Battin is obviously a brilliant chemist, and a phenomenal lecturer, but she is easily the most difficult Chem 115 professor - it's not even close. She does offer many practice problems, but her exams are much more difficult than any other professor's. You need to put in a ton of extra effort if you want to do well. She also won't give extra credit.
(Chem 231) Battin is rough, I'm not gonna lie, but she knows how to explain concepts in the simplest way possible that is easier to understand. I enjoyed the material a lot more than gen chem. Attend every class!! I used the book for practice problems and spent more hours studying than I ever have for another class. It was worth it though.
Battin sometimes seemed like she wanted 1/3 of our class to fail, which they did. She could teach well, but would make the tests outrageously tricky. We often had pop quizzes and Knewton homework. Our grades were based on attendance, quizzes, homework, and mostly tests. Our test average was never above 69%.
Dr. Battin is brutal. She will make you work very hard for a good grade. Although her test were extremely hard, she does well at preparing you for the final. Make sure to show up to class on time or else she will single you out and ask you to leave, same goes with talking while in class.
So much homework and everything is complicated.
Battin was very tough. During lecture it seemed she tried to get through as many slides as possible to beat her record. We learned new content for the test up to one day before and there were many questions on those subjects. Also pop quizs on stuff you did a couple of weeks ago and not currently doing.
I took Battin for Chem115. Not going to lie, the class was a tad bit challenging. Battin (as well as the other Chem professors) make the course very lecture heavy. Battin warns you from day 1 that you have to do a lot of practice and that's true, but honestly if you do extra work and go to recitations, she's more than willing to work with you!
Battin gets a lot of bad rap from people, but she is actually a great professor. Makes her students work hard and practice yes, but she cares about going over ample examples and giving access to lots of practice problems. If you study and work hard you will pass no problem. She was often friendly and sympathetic too.
Battin is an excellent professor when it comes to teaching during lectures and making sure that students understand how to do things by going over many different practice problems. However, her tests are much harder than the other professors. YOU NEED TO STUDY FOR HER CLASS.
Battin is the worst chemistry professor you can get. Her lectures are really hard to understand and she couldn't care less if you fail her class. There are a lot of pop quizzes that will come up at randomly where the stuff on it is either from weeks ago or stuff we haven't covered. She is somewhat bland as well so her lectures are really boring.
The best professor for Chemistry 115 hands down. Her lectures were always interesting and kept me engaged. You do have to work for an A but it is definitely doable. I am looking forward to taking her for Organic Chemistry in my sophomore year. She definitely prepares you for any and every type of problem out there.
Dr. Battin was very strict and had high expectations. Her tests were definitely harder than any other Chem115 teachers, but I think my class ended up more prepared for the ACS final exam. She was overall a pretty good teacher, but her class was very hard. You had to put in a ton of work if you wanted a good grade in the class.
Chem115 is a challenging freshman course, but anyone who blames Dr. Battin for their lack of effort in learning chemistry is soft. She can come off as rude but last time I checked a rude prof isnt a good excuse to get a 40 on the final. very good lecturer
Dr. Battin can be degrading at times. Don't take it personally, and you'll be fine Class is fast-paced, so attend lectures at all cost. Go to recitation. It is the best way to practice for exams. She has a reputation for having the toughest formative exams, but that prepares you better for the final exam. She is strict about lecture hall conduct.
Tests were straightforward, lecture notes were easy to follow. You shouldn't be scared of this class unless you're an unreasonable person who expects an A without putting in effort. But if you have AP credit from high school, my advice is to SKIP THIS CLASS. Don't retake it thinking you'll learn something new just because it's a college class
This teacher is absolutely awful and you should avoid her at all cost. She doesn't teach her own class or make her own homework. The things she attempts to teach in lectures she does not explain and then expects us to know it all without any explanation. She also doesn't make any of her own homework and when asked questions is rude to any students.
Dr. Battin is a good teacher, it's just that she goes too much into the material for an introductory course. I have friends in CHEM 115 who aren't doing the level of stuff we are. She does all this in preparation to 115 but you don't really need all the things, like memorizing all polyatomic ions and their charges. Homework heavy and tests are hard
Prof. Battin does not explain anything and she's a difficult grader, I dropped cause she refused to help me and if I didn't pay attention for one second I would fail the class.
Throughout this whole semester, Dr. Battin has been so kind and helpful to me. There's also a lot of homework, and a lot of quizzes, and it's a fair amount of material to cover. But, as long as you put the work in you will be fine. And really, its a chemistry class, its going to be difficult, but Dr. Battin does a great job of teaching it.
HAVE to be prepared the hit the ground running and studying day one. You will need to memorize the Elements (name/ symbol), Polyatomic ions, Strong/ Weak acids and bases, multiple equations, metric conversion factors, multiple sets of rules like Solubility rules. The class builds up fast and you will get lost if you do not stay diligent. LOTS OF HW
Don't take chem 110 w Battin. This course is super fast-paced and was difficult to take online. She doesn't lecture during in-person classes. Everything you learn is taught through youtube videos you have to watch between classes. Be prepared for lots of HW on off days. She gives bi-weekly quizzes which are on new material but mostly cumulative.
Dr. Battin was there to help, but lectures were not in person and were mostly through videos. There were a good amount of quizzes and smaller quizzes called knowledge checks which can really affect your grade.
Battin was a tough professor but her lectures for me were so easy to follow and she goes in depth to make sure you actually understand. I think a lot of people dont like her because they arent actually willing to work. Battin made chem for me so much easier. this course is very tough and a lot of time is needed to be spend to get a good grade.
she completely lied about the format of her exams saying they were multiple choice and making them extended response.
Erin Battin is by far the worst professor in the chemistry department and her ratings show that. She gives excessive work as if you don't have any other courses. She also comes off as standoffish and rude to a lot of students when they ask her questions.
She is very rude to students and often ignores your emails. Her class is very hard, and she is somewhat good at explaining things but the attitude makes her a really bad teacher
I don't have enough words to tell you how horrible Dr. Battin is. She's rude and acts as if she's never wrong. She grades ridiculously, and messes up writing tests questions. When you bring up her mistakes, she gets hateful, and she'll take points away from you even if it is her mistake. She also lied about the test format. Take orgo 1 and 2.
She is rude, disrespectful, and uncaring of how her students do in her class.
she assigns about 6 30-minute lecture videos to watch over the weekend EVERY WEEKEND and doesn't even open it up for submission until Friday. assigns lots of practice problems and overall isn't helpful
Not bad overall, lectures were pretty clear about what was going to be on the next quiz. Get ready to watch lecture videos every weekend and spend a few hours a week doing practice problems. Do not miss class or show up late.
Worst professor I've ever had, there's a reason she was on academic probation last semester, she genuinely likes to fail kids.
A lot of people hate on professor Battin, but I think she was a great professor! Her lecture are clear, and attendance wasnt mandatory. If you have problems you dont understand shell work over them in class. She is hard at first, but she gets better just give it time!
Battin is awful to say the least. I would NOT recommend her. Steer clear!! Shes hard to get ahold of. Her lectures are just repeats of videos she makes you watch. She forces homework over the weekend basically (hw opens on Thursday and is due Sunday). She doesnt care about you or your grade. Shes an awful teacher and doesnt explain anything.
This was a tough class. Lots of homework and lecture videos which take lots of time. However, they help you prepare for midterm and final. During the class I hated it but after I realized how much the homework and lecture videos help. I learned a lot about chemistry in this class and compared to other chem professors I would say she is the best.
Worst professor I've ever had. Gives lecture videos that open on thursday and are due on sunday with about 5 videos each lasting 30-45 minute but then does nothing in class but individual work. Rude and does not care at all about her students and hardly ever responds to emails. She is the reason I switched majors. I really hope she's reading this.
This class dropped my 4.0 GPA Ive never had a problem keeping up in class until now. Its intro to chem and youre expected to know everything immediately. Very standoffish, yelled at the class when her quiz score average was below 51%, doesnt try to help and is quite rude when we dont understand. Blames us but its not our fault at all
The WORST professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. She curves grades without telling you how so I have never been able to figure out my real grade, even with the poorly made grade calculator that she will provide. Just the worse.
She's unhelpful. Doesn't know how to help students when they need it and has the same response to every problem.Even if your answer to the questions she asks every time is yes and you are still struggling she will ask you them again over and over again. Almost everyone is struggling but it is still our fault. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Don't take this class unless you want to spend all your free time studying for this class. I worked as hard as I could but it did not seem to matter. It was hard to understand her web based lectures. I would rather change my major then take this class with her again.
Dr. Battin is a great and strict professor, although her chem 110 class was difficult, from day one she has made a very clear outline of what students are expected to do in order to succeed in her class. Her quizzes are hard and be prepared to do a lot of work outside of the classroom if you want to succeed. She is understanding and lectures well.
Erin Battin, to put nicely, is absolutely HORRIBLE. Very rarely did she ever teach in her attendance mandatory class, rather she recorded herself lecturing and the responsibility of actually learning material depended on yourself in your own time OUTSIDE of class. Her tests are every 2 weeks and are incredibly difficult. Please find anybody else.
There is weekly homework and lecture videos that you have to do watch outside of class and then she discusses them in the the next class and does example problems. I failed the first 3 quizzes and still ended up with an A in the class. I personally really liked her teaching style and would definitely take her again.
Professor Battin definitely knows what she's talking about, although she has difficulty in answering a difficult or uncommon question. Attendance is absolutely mandatory in this class. You will do well in this class if you are passionate about chemistry. If you aren't, or this class is a jump in knowledge, then you should find another professor.
If you take her for an introductory chemistry class, please make sure you know literally everything about chemistry before going to class the first day or else you're going to be behind. I studied for 10+ hours each week for this class and still barely passed. She doesn't really know how to help either and isn't good at answering questions.
Harsh in grading & without prior chem knowledge makes intro chem very difficult. Calculations gone thru quickly & if you dont understand them, its hard to learn. Except for exam one, test averages were extremely low & often avoided sharing the class average. Despite failed tests from the entire lecture class, she never gave partial credit or curves
Dr. Battin expects her students to know a lot about chemistry before coming in. She goes through things quickly in class and does not allow for time to actually understand the material. She did curve the final grade up at the end, but this was a hard class to deal with because it is very test heavy. The only other grades are once a week homeworks.
class was almost entirely exam-based, and no extra credit was ever offered; dr. battin would also never curve any exams, despite the majority of students failing every exam. besides this, battin was pretty good at lectures, but could be boring at times. be prepared to study!
Dr Battin was a good professor, however she is quick to move on after every topic. The exams could consist of what was learned weeks before and/or what was learned the class before the exam date. She gave a lot of examples however they were easier than the ones on the homework. Exams were difficult but the final is much easier than you think.
The beginning was great but her class quickly become awful. Whenever you ask her something after class, her answer is always "go to tutoring" and she isn't even there. Participation is a huge chunk of your grade. The entire class failed every exam except the first one. Exams are impossible and she doesn't curve them. Sped through practice problems.
Make sure you attend class, I logged in one time while not in class and got a lot of points taken off my attendance, she's lazy with midterm grades and doesn't seem to put in a lot of effort for some things. If you want to pass, go to class, take notes, and use the quizzes to get good points, and HW to do good studying. Bring calculator.
Based on when I took the class in 2018, she's way too far from the word understanding. I was standing on a B, however, I received an F on her class just because I forgot to sign the protocol front page. I feel like she enjoys torturing students instead of tutoring/teaching them! Never walk in late to her class you'll immediately get kicked out.
Worst professor I have ever taken in my life. Genuinely amazed that West Virginia University lets this woman teach. Practice exams and homework are absolutely nothing like her exams. Almost seems like she enjoys seeing her students struggle. Would much rather spend my tuition teaching myself this course than ever let this woman teach me again.
so unnecessarily rude. did not notify us to fill out her SEI before it closed, and only told us to fill out the one for our lab section, therefore, preventing her students from giving honest, meaningful feedback to the university which is conniving and intentional on her part. avoid unless you already know everything because she's unaccommodating.
Her reverse class thing is bull. I believe it to be pure laziness. She can reuse lectures and then has an easy class. What's the point of even having class at that point, it might as well be online. She's rude and treats the class like a high school freshman class. She gets mad at the class for low test averages. Maybe it's more than the students.
Thought I cheated on a multiple choice text because I guessed a couple answers correct. Very mean and I had to retake the class the following semester.
I showed up to every class and finished every assignment on time and asked for help multiple times and got F's on two exams. I ended the class with a D, BUT right before final grades were posted my D turned into a B. Now she might have accidentally done this, but she def knew I was struggling and may have felt bad and wanted to help me.
Do not take this professor! She will ruin Chem for you. I liked Chem until I had her. She lies & is too lazy to grade properly. I had to take her to student affairs & still got no where. Ended up withdrawing from course & took class later getting an A without issue. This women should not be teaching. absolutely terrible. WVU needs to get rid of her
If you don't already know what she is teaching, you are likely to not understand. She "teaches" as if you should already know everything.
I didn't think she was a terrible teacher and she reminds you of upcoming homework/tests regularly. if you want to pass, go to lectures as attendance is mandatory and be on time or else she may kick you out. and go through each powerpoint slide making sure you know every concept as the tests are short and worth a lot. class is difficul though
Worst class I have ever taken, amazed that WVU lets this woman teach. Seems like she enjoys seeing us struggle. If you dont already know the class content you never will. She teaches as if you already know everything. She is too lazy to grade tells classes the gradebook is incorrect but when asked what grades are she tells classes to figure it out
Hands down the worst professor! Condescending and acts like you know all of the material already. Stay away!!!
Told me to contact student success after I had a major family emergency instead of helping me. Student success told me they don't deal with that and it's up to the professor. Very rude and unhelpful
She isn't a very nice person or a good professor; never seemed to care if any of her students succeeded and did not offer any extra help or advice. She was also incredibly unapproachable. Did not provide much insight into what would be on the exams and just said to study "everything," which is again, impossible. If you get Battin I am sorry.
Battin gave plenty of examples to learn chemistry which helped a lot. There was additional practice uploaded online and plenty of homework and lecture examples to go with it. Battin clearly explains topic and works through examples to give students the understanding they need to do it on their own.
She's bad at teaching, and doesn't care if her students fail. When I reached out for help, I was ignored. I never got a single response to any of my emails. She's rude and dismissive, I don't know how she still has a job here. Office of Accessibility knows her BY NAME because of how unaccommodating she is and how many students have issues with her.
Dr.Battin is an extremely tough professor. With that being said I went to every class and completed all assignments, and still barely passed with a C. The only reason I passed was because Battin was extremely caring and helped me anyway she could. I cannot speak for everyone but in my experience if you do your part she will do hers. Go to class!!!
In 6 years of undergrad and grad school, CHEM 115 with Dr. Battin was by far my worst academic experience. Lectures are boring power points. Tests trip you up over small details. My A- was changed to a C because my phone died in class, so I couldn't prove attendance--despite talking to her after class about it.
Professor Battin's class is notoriously tough, but with consistent effort and using study tools like Unstuck study AI, I was able to pull through. Definitely attend every lecture and stay on top of the material.
Dr. Battin provides plenty of material and practice problems for a student to succeed in her class. The reasoning behind the average rating is because nothing ever stood out about her in person lectures. I enjoy chemistry, but found myself losing focus in her class at times. If you do the work outside of class, you will be successful.
Took Dr Battin for chem 115 and it started off good despite her putrid ratings. It didn't take long to understand other students dislike for her. When approaching her it's impossible. Shes on her phone, rolling her eyes, not listening, you ask for help and examples she explains it in 10 seconds and expects you to understand. Don't take her. RUDE.
can't teach, you will get more info by reading through slides. If you dont know Chemistry well, you will fail. she will answer every question by telling you to go to tutoring. exams don't really have anything you studied for. she fills exams with material from other units. you won't have formulas on exams. you need to memorize every formula and def
The way she teaches makes it difficult to learn. Before taking an exam, we will move on to notes for the next chapter a week before. She is very condescending when students ask questions and is hard to approach. She will also put questions on exams we never learned.
Absolutely amazing! The lectures were very helpful as long as you take notes.
If you miss the lectures you will have a hard time catching up or understanding
Awful professor. If I could give any advice to anyone taking a chem course it would be to AVOID taking her class!
Erin Battin is the worst chem professor at this school, if you take her class be prepared to get no extra help and do not even think about emailing her, I think she hates children
Dr. Battin is the best chem professor I've had. I took an intro level with her; she made the content easy to understand. Chem is a tough subject for me, but I went to every class and did fine on the exams. Definitely study plenty in advance and make sure you do practice problems. It's a lot of memorization. She seems cold but she's pretty helpful.
Based on the ratings on here, I was a little nervous going into the class, but she is not bad. Her explanations and examples, while sometimes time-consuming, were very thorough. I wouldn't recommend skipping class and I would take extra notes during the lecture. The homework load is bearable. Overall, its a good course and a good professor.
If you attend class and do the homework you can pass easily. Battin is a good teacher and great at explaining things, I highly recommend taking her.
Read off slides, rushed through information, many topics were unclear
I enjoyed coming to this class because Dr. Battin was entertaining as well as a good teacher. I understood what we were learning the whole semester, and she made it super easy to ask for help. She provides so many practice problems which are optional but super helpful. The homework was a lot, and kind of repetitive, but I liked Dr. Battin a lot.
Dr. Battin is a good teacher, but she does have high expectations of her students. The textbook is essentially useless and only required to complete the online homework, which is repetitive and does not prepare you for the types of questions on the exams. However, if you go to class and pay attention, the class is relatively easy pass.
Professor is very stern. Does not want all students to be successful. Has office hours but you will be lucky if you get in. Instructions say do not say teacher plays favorites or shows biases, so I will refrain from point out the obvious.
I had Dr. Battin in the spring, she is smart and knows what she is talking about. Lots of homework on MyLab by Pearson. Don't miss class. Dr. Battin always just kind of came off the wrong way to me from the get go just due to her demeanor. I once saw her call out an honors student by name mid lecture for talking to the student beside them
Do not take this class if you haven't taken a chemistry class already, she will teach it like you already have. I chose to take this class because I've never taken a chemistry class, though now I am regretting that. Many times I have heard "I'm sure you all know this already", this is an entry level course for a reason. 100% don't take.
I will be honest, i always give professors a good review but this is not one that i can. This class was absolutely awful and difficult as so stressful. I would never recommend to anyone to take this class with Erin Batten, she has been one of the worst professors i have had a wvu.
if you wanna be on lifelong depression/anxiety meds this is the class for you!
Worst professor I have ever had. DO NOT register for her classes.
Dr. Battin will speak to you like you know everything and nothing. Asking questions is dangerous as she will give short, snippy, and useless replies. Class isn't mandatory but she DOESNT record lectures for students to rewatch. If you're stuck with this class, study constantly, go to every class, get on her good side, and DONT MISS ANY ASSIGNMENTS.
Cannot teach. Dont bother asking questions or emailing her, she wont answer or care. Will not teach material on exams half the time. I would rather jump of a roof than try her class again.
It's obvious that everyone who left a bad review on Dr. Battin is fresh out of high school and have never had a stern, strict profesr. I would agree the class is super difficult and one downside was that she did not record and post the lectures however, go to class, participate, and do ALL of your work and you will have no issues with Dr. Battin.
I did not learn a single thing in this class. had I not had prerequisite knowledge I would have failed this class. lectures are completely useless homework is needlessly long and tedious 3+ hours every week, for a 100? and not reflective of tests She did provide a very generous curve of around 20%. Not that it stopped me going insane save your self
The course is extremely hard and professor is very unhelpful and hard
Horrible. Random in-class quizzes, weekly homework that takes 3+ hours to finish, big exams every few weeks, cumulative final. She is one of the rudest and most unhelpful professors I have ever met. If you don't have prior chemistry knowledge, good luck passing this course. I still have nightmares of her.
over half of our class dropped at midterms if that says anything. erin battin should be fired.
Her lectures are not very helpful most of the time they cover the basics and the questions on the homework and tests are 10x harder. Shes not helpful at all, has office hours but will make you feel like an idiot when asking what you could do better. Overall just a hard class with a professor that doesn't care if you pass or fail.
She doesn't teach one bit. She rambles in lectures that don't apply to the exams at all. Heavy homework load. Wouldn't reccomend.
Genuinely the worst professor I have had. Don't bother emailing she won't answer. 3+ hour homework's. She goes through slides in seconds, genuinely did not learn a thing from
Cannot teach. She is such a bad teacher, she is the reason attendance now counts for points, and teachers must post their lecture slides. Cannot be reached through email, and honestly is very unreceptive in class. She acts like you should know everything already and is always comparing 115 to higher courses and says it's "easy". With her, it ain't
Cant teach. Should be fired but the school is to cheap to do that. Shes the reason other chem 115 now counts attendace as she had 2 semesters in a row with a 50% fail rate in her courses.
I would rather jump off the ESB and set myself on fire than take another class with her again.
I don't understand why so many of Dr. Battin's reviews are so negative. I took her class this semester for a science credit and have only good things to say about her. She goes over many examples in class, and while she expects a lot from students, as long as you go to class and pay attention, you'll know what you're doing.
Horrible teacher. Speeds through lectures without fully explaining and then not understanding why you don't remember something from two months ago without a refresher. Very rude and hard to reach through email. Does not help at all in office hours. Do not take her.
She taught everything enough so you could pass tests if you studied a lot and asked friends from other classes for their practice problems, because she doesn't give you very many to study with. She is extremely rude. Sent her an email and I got the most sarcastic response back and she never answered my question. Get on her good side or don't speak.
Very difficult and only helpful if you attend her office hours. Other than that lectures are useless. Genuinely the least caring teacher I've ever had. 75% of the class grade is either quizzes or exams. That alone shows the difficulty of the class. Rude and wants you to fail.
I have never had such a hard time in a class, came from a direct admit nursing program and passed anatomy 1 and 2 with A's however she is the least caring professor I have ever had. She ridicules students for asking questions or says email her. Her tests are always a suprise and you will never actually know what to study.
literally awful. if i could go lower than a 0 i would. she was no help when i asked for help, she never properly introduced a topic, and would never even provide the topics the rest was on. absolutely a joke
I really enjoyed her teaching style and found it very helpful. The tests are hard so be sure to study and read the questions carefully. Do not ever be disrespectful or entitled towards her or she will not help you. Every time I asked for help this semester she was very nice and helpful but that was because I was always polite and respectful.
this class was the worst class I have ever taken. she is very uncaring and not empathetic to her students. I probably would have failed this class, if it weren't for the tutor I had to pay for. she says to email her if you have any questions and then picks and chooses what emails she wants to respond to you. she just is a bad professor.
I only finished with a B because I sat down for hours and taught myself everything. Homework takes hours to complete and it doesnt align with test questions. she will speed run through slides and then give quizzes at the end of class, usually 2 questions so one wrong is a 50% quiz grade. When you ask any question in class she will belittle you.
Awful teacher, learned absolutely nothing in her class. Does not explain anything and teaches like she expects you to already know how to do it. If you have her switch your professor if you can!
I see a lot of people on here saying that people's dislike towards Dr. Battin is due to the students' own poor performance in the class and lack of participation. I excelled at chemistry at a rigorous private highschool. However, in this class no matter how much studying, practice problems, office hours etc. I did I still failed every exam.
Do not do it to yourself. The chem department is honestly a joke. Class is mostly exams, be weary of her in class quizzes, miss 1 question and it's a 50%. Honestly don't know if I have to retake this class. Exams are nothing like she shows in lecture I don't care what any of you say backing her up
A lot of people dislike her but honestly I thought she was a very good professor. I enjoyed her teaching style and her exams were not impossible if you came to lecture, payed attention, did the homework and put a little bit of studying in after class.
Mrs.Battin by far is the worst professor still teaching at WVU. Im a 4.0 Aerospace engineering undergrad and never have I taken a class where I have felt so belittled and disgusted to be in. She says feel free to reach out if you have any questions and if you do, you replies back with the most snarky and disrespectful email. Would not reccommend.
I did not enjoy her much but I did learn A LOT whether I wanted to or not. I had some knowledge of General Chemistry before entering the class. She is not a good help when you ask questions. You will get Pop Quizzes. You also will not know your grade until Midterms & after Finals. What you put in, you 100% get out. Don't take it lightly lol.
PROS: Easy Homework & Quizzes CONS: Wordy Lectures, Bad Study Materials, Ultra-focused Test Questions Neutral: Mandatory Attendance (iClicker) 4 excused absences Overall: Not bad, Just not the best professor to take this course with.
Worst proffesor ever. Genuinely do anything to not have her and this class I understand chemistry completely and still failed this class. She is beyond rude and smart alec and is not the least bit helpful.
She lowkey sucks but also learned a lot from the class.
Difficult class regardless of who teaches it. Overall grade = 25% tests (drop lowest), 25% final exam (curved), in-class quizzes (drop 3 lowest) attendance (6 excused), at-home quizzes (drop lowest). Tests are super hard because content is super hard IMO. As a professor she is fine, lots of content and I needed to review at home. Don't skip class.
