I definitely don't recommend taking her as a teacher if you don't have to.
Too many applicative, complicated questions. Unclear and too detailed for a non-major bio course.

She's terrible. She seems nice but it's just a cover. Her tests are killer and she expects too much detail.
I really enjoyed cell bio. Her tests are hard, but she gives great study guides if you ask for them. She is very knowlegable as well and keeps you interested in the subject.
She is awful. I went to get help like 3 times and she never took the effort I put into the class into consideration....if your not a biology person, dont take her to fill a science req.
I thought she was a great teacher. Very enthusiastic about questions and doesnt make you feel dumb to ask questions.
Has a sincere interest in helping her students. She explains the material well. Her tests really aren't as hard as people make them sound... you just have to study (which is why we're in college, right?...)

Tests are very hard. Lectures are long and unclear.
Biology with Gerecke was a very enjoyable experience. She is a great professor who really tries to make sure everyone understands the material. The tests are not as difficult as everyone claims...as long as you take decent notes and pay attention you'll be fine. This course was an easy A.
She is a little boring, but her tests are not that bad if you study. She is easy to follow and is a nice person. Just make sure you study and you will be fine.
very easy class, as long as u take good notes the tests arent bad at all.
the previous three ratings are quite inaccurate b/c the class is not an easy A...because you have to study for a good amount and she does ask little detailed questions on the exams that aren't pertinent. her niceness is really a cover. She was qouted in saying that she would like her exam average to be a 75%. stupid required class for pharm majors
i hear she became a better teacher after my class turned in such awful semester reviews. she's very rude to students who ask questions in class, her test questions can be ambiguous, and her personality is fake. but she may have become a better teacher since then...
I hated this class.
She is good teacher. However, she is very picky on her tests. Points will be taken off for missing 1 word.
Study study study, know your stuff inside out for those ambigious questions where you writ down everything you know. She's pretty specific, i'd say study 40% notes and 60% book. btw bring asprin for when your hand hurts ater the test
I really enjoyed Dr. Gerecke! Great class, HARD TESTS. Expect to be tested over the tiniest of the details!! But she prepares you very well! Very knowledgeable.
Gerecke was a very, very good prof. to have for this course. If you study hard, it will be a breeze. Look at the notes and read the chapter before and after class. It helps, and if you don't understand something, she will/can help you. She's very easy to understand, a little odd, but she knows who puts in the effort.
She gives too few opportunities to earn points, and she doesn't drop anything, so be careful and make sure you know every detail if you want to take her bio class.
Her tests are hard, she says she likes to have an 80% average and she gets it. If you are good at memorizing detail you will be fine (my tests were 98, 94 and 87). READ THE TEXTBOOK THOROUGHLY!! Very willing to help you understand concepts. Be prepared for quirky (not the good kind), her style will annoy you at times
urghhh Her test questions were THE MOST frusterating things ever. It seemed like she purposely would choose questions that she knew you were going to miss. Her lectures made you feel like you were preschool again with the way she teaches. On the bright side, you do learn a lot, but Her tests are just ridiculous
You must be prepared to study hard for this class, but if you do, you'll be fine. She goes over most of the material but makes you responsible for learning parts on your own. Tests are challenging but not impossible.
Her tests are rather challenging, but as long as you study thoroughly for them you will do fine.
This professor is the worst professor I had this semester. She isn't very helpful when you go to ask for help and is unable to explain things in different ways. She made me dread going to biology. I would try to avoid taking her class if at all possible.
I didn't put alot of effort into this class and I was still ale to get a B. She has a passion for what she teaches. Her quizzes are easy, but her test can be hard. But she does give extra credit. The problem is that her power points are just really pictures from the book. Definitely use the book and masteringbio heavy if you want a good grade.
She was a nice person but very picky on all assignments and tests. You really have to know the smallest details to do well in this class.
I loved Dr. Gereke. She did have a very challeging class, but I thought she was very helpful. Her notes are mostly pictures in powerpoint, so I would recommend writing down things she says in class in a separate notebook. That really helped me this year.
Dr. Gerecke is a nice person, but a very picky grader. Her lectures/powerpoints all make sense in class, but the questions she asks on tests are much more in depth so make sure you read the book and take good notes.
Dr. Gerecke is really nice and really passionate about what she teaches! Some of her test questions can be tricky bust she is wiling to help you whenever you need it. Read the book and study some and you'll be fine! She is way better than other cell bio teachers.
She frustrates me SOO much!! Her lectures are great but just studying notes from class will not get you a C average on her tests. You have to read the book (like ALL OF IT). She put questions on her tests that just feel like she is trying to trick you. Glad I never have to take her again.
Pretty easy class. Use the book and find a study partner and you'll do fine.
Dr. Gerecke (pronounced gare-eh-key)is very nice and interesting but her tests and quizzes can be very tricky. She bases most of her questions on the books, so just studying the notes is not enough! She is very helpful outside of class and will help you with your problems/study habits.
Gerecke is a nice lady. But she is a BRUTAL grader. Her tests are rediculous and she is so picky! I have to re-take her class :(. Anyway, If you have her chances are that you did not pick to have her.
She loves what she does, but that does not make it any easier on us. She makes her questions on quizzes and tests very tricky!! Lots of studying, and a lot of thankfulness to be out of the class!
She is super passionate about her subject. She doesn't really seem to like students though, and she is a super brutal and picky grader. You will learn a lot in her class, but it will be a lot of work to get that grade.
I took her first semester (heard she got easier second semester). She is not approachable at all, so form a study group. Her tests are EXTREMELY picky, so even if you know your notes inside and out you will be screwed. MUST READ YOUR TEXTBOOK TO PASS!!
She is hard grader, and she is nice. You have to be on your A-game with her.
I cannot tell you what I was supposed to learn in this class. Gerecke is awkward and picky. Her tests are super hard and she marks off for every little detail. I do not recommend taking her as a teacher. If you do by some chance get stuck with her, I'm sorry for you.
I would say Gereke is an excellent professor if she actually tested you on what you learn in class. Her tests are extremely hard and she is very picky. A lot of her questions are designed to trick you. It is an absolute MUST that you read your textbook and know it inside out. This class takes a lot of work but it is possible to get a good grade
shes a great person to talk with, but as a professor...absolutely horrible. Avoid at all costs. tests are insanely difficult and no matter how much u study, she always seems to find whats wrong with ur answer. not approachable at all, & if u try u wont get anything out of it. AVOID!! esp. to fill a req.
Marks down for the smallest things: very very picky grader! Partially, i think that the course was crummy, but her teaching style was under par too.
I hated this woman with a passion. She thinks she is an English teacher.
Avoid at all cost. She grades any paper like you are in an english class. Also tests are nothing like what you talk about, very tricky. I made the mistake of taking her without knowing anything about her, if you're reading at least you probably didn't make the same pain-staking mistake.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This is a weeding out class to begin with but she likes to give you Cs to barely pass. I had a 4.0 first semester because I have good work ethic so I know it was not me. She takes off for everything! Memorize everything or you'll fail. Understanding concepts+memorizing word by word definitions get you a B.
A very tough class. When she says that you need to study everyday you need to study everyday! As long as you are willing to dedicate time everyday to the class you will do fine. She is also very eager to help if you need it.
She is a very tough grader especially with writing assignments. Her tests are difficult but the labs are pretty easy. The class wasn't too hard but she doesn't teach it well. Her power points are your friends so use them to study for quizes and tests. She just isn't a very good teacher for any class she teaches from what I've heard.
The people giving her bad reviews obviously don't pay attention in class. If you have a "good work ethic" you should have an A. It's not hard. I haven't cracked the book all semester and have an A. Instead of copying everything from the PowerPoint word-for-word, listen to what she says.
HORRIBLE TEACHER, MAKES EVERYTHING SO DIFFICULT NEVER WORKED SO HARD IN MY LIFE AND WASN'T SUCCESSFUL. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TEACHER. DON'T TAKE HER UNLESS YOU HAVE TO!!!!!!!!!
BI111 is a joke. You will have a ton of assignments no matter what. As far as having Gereke goes, she has a very dry sense of humor, and assumes that everyone in the Biology major wants to be some sort of geneticist, biologist, botanist, etc. She is easy, but so is this class.
One of the hardest classes I've taken. Not because the class is hard, she is just a horrible professor. Hardest grader, ALWAYS finds something wrong with your answer- grades word for word & if you put it in your own words its wrong. She even tests over dates of things.. how relevant is a date when you cover so much more important material. AVOID
Dr. Gerecke was a great professor! BI 111 is just an intro class, so its not really important. It gives you an overview of the biology opportunities. No tests, no quizzes, just a few 12 page summaries every now and again. I didn't miss a single point all semester.
God awful professor. Grades extremely extremely tough, even on the easiest of assignments. You can do good on the exams but will end up with a B because of all the small work that she gives you low grades on. Don't take, seriously.
Ask for help and usually she just read back the instructions and didn't seem like students doing well was in her best interest. Tons of studying and hw and she makes easy topics seem hard. No matter how much effort put in my grade never reflected because of her grading. One positive, she makes you learn the material forward and backwards.
Ask for help and usually she just read back the instructions and didn't seem like she cared how well her students were doing. Tons of studying and hw and she makes easy topics seem hard. No matter how much effort put in my grade never reflected because of her grading. One positive, she makes you learn the material forward and backwards.
The amount of work you put into this class will never show in your grade because of how picky she is when grading testsquizzesassignments. Be prepared to put in A work and receive a B.
Her class is very easy to follow and by the end of the semester, you will understand the concepts clearly. She is a great teacher and very funny. However, her test are next to impossible. It is as if her tests were made for senior bio majors and not freshman pharmacy majors.
Not only is she a terrible professor, but she is a horrible human being. She's just not very nice.
Multiple choice questions seemed like they were written in Chinese. If you don't put literally the textbook definition for a question on a short answer prepare to be marked off heavily. Classes are extremely long, and lectures are boring. That being said, her powerpoints are great and you do learn a lot, although your grade will not reflect it.
She was an awful prof. She would lecture the entire time, go off on tangents at pointless things, then assume that you were an expert on that tangent and test you over it. Her lectures were not very helpful and you had to read the textbook, but even with reading the text book, her tests are unnecessarily hard.
she is literally horrible. avoid her at all costs
WORST CLASS EVER. I had her for cell bio fresh yr & changed my major because of her class. Terrible teacher, just reads slides. Assumes you know everything. You have to study and read ALL the time. Exams are impossible; and her grading on the quizzes are so specific you can't do well on those either. 10/10 do NOT recommend her. Avoid at all costs.
Here lectures are pretty confusing and her tests are difficult. She expects you to be an expert at topics that she barely mentions in class. The class is also just organized in a confusing way. Avoid if you can. If you can't, be prepared to work for a decent grade.
Often gave exams and quizzes that asked questions to which the answers were not covered in course material. Grades on grammar (I know, it's science). Gives many trick questions or "which is more true" questions. However, she makes a lot of weird jokes in class and makes fun of herself and family all the time so that's nice.
Dr. Gerecke is a great professor and tough grader. She gives great lecture and lets you have the PowerPoints. Her tests are long, with lots of essay questions, and require at least 3 hours of studying each. If you go to class, take notes, and participate then the class should be manageable because she explains things well. It's hard to get an A.
Dr. Gerecke is a tough grader. She looks for specific answers on her quizzes and tests which requires many hours of studying via the notes and book. However she can be very approachable and is willing to help if you see her in office hours.
She makes you work for your A and is an EXTREMELY tough grader (a little too harsh sometimes). Expect to read outside of class and study for a couple hours each day. She also posts her power points online, which is very helpful. She is honestly a good teacher, you just have to take initiative to do more than just take notes in class.
Reads off of slides for the entire lecture period. Quizzes are somewhat hard and can be confusing at times. BUT, the tests are extremely hard! Multiple choice questions can be unclear. She might even put a short answer on the exam that was barely covered in class.
She gives horrible lectures and does nothing but read off slides. Her quizzes and tests are completely random and expect questions that were never touched on in class. She expects you to come in with a solid background in biology and just is a horrible professor. She tanks pre-pharmacy students GPA's year after year. Do not take her!
Doctor Gerecke gets a bad rep but in reality she is one of the best professors I've had at Butler so far. She demands a lot from her students but in return, you learn a lot as a student of hers. I appreciated her lectures and she went over most of the material on the test in class.
I heard a lot of bad things about Dr. Gerecke coming into the class, but she's nothing like I heard. She was very relaxed and class seemed more like a conversation than a lecture. She knew what she was talking about and got it across to the students very clearly. Tests were tough, but once you get the hang of the question type, you're good.
Worst professor I have ever had. She's completely unapproachable and class is no help. The tests are very hard and they take up so much of the points for the course. Doesn't care if her students are succeeding or not.
Honestly, she made a biology 101 class near impossible. unless you are a male, you will not be liked. She is very rude when you go in for help, and her tests are very difficult. I would avoid taking her if possible. Not a fan.
I hate her. Her tests are impossible. She doesn't give af about whether you are getting the material or not. She expects that this should basically be REVIEW for youand treats you accordingly. Even if you are a pharm major, this IS the first time you've heard this stuff. She just points to her slide show and is rude if you come to her
I had Gerecke for genetics and it was by far my toughest class. She really makes you work for your grade but she also only cares about key words in your answers. You can write paragraphs and she will cross it all out and write a one word answer next to it. You NEED to memorize the power points because that's where her key words come from. GOOD LUCK
The thing about Dr. Gerecke is that there is a small correlation between what is taught in class and what is on exams. You have to be prepared to study her lectures each night and to read the book for addtl understanding. She is a hard teacher but it is possible to do well. The exams are hard but if you study hard you will do well.
She's a difficult teacher, no way of getting around it. The class average for the first test was a 77, and she doesn't curve. If you want an A, you'll have to work hard for it.
The only way to pass the class is to take notes and then to go back into the textbook and thoroughly read each chapter. You cannot just cruise through the class by just studying the notes, most of the material that is on the test is in the books and is not mentioned during her lectures.
If you are signed up for this prof, switch now. I was a straight A student before this class. It made me quit the pharmacy program because I thought I wasn't smart enough for the program. I figured if this entry class was so bad, how could I ever manage later ones. Turns out, lots say hers is one of the hardest they take in the whole pharm prog
Gerecke is a good teacher in the classroom and explains concepts fairly well. However, her tests and quizzes are extremely difficult and often have very specific questions as well as application questions that are hard to get right. Study a lot in this class!
Dr. Gerecke is a decent professor in the classroom. She explains concepts pretty clearly. But her tests and quizzes are very difficult and the questions are super specific. You need to pay attention to what she says during lecture more than copying down notes from the powerpoints. The book isn't required, but reading is necessary for doing well.
Gerecke is a nice person; however, her class is very difficult. She tests very heavily over what she says during lectures rather than what is on the powerpoint. Reading the recommended sections from the book is probably the best way to get all of the material.
Most boring lecturer I've ever experienced, but ONLY TESTS ON HER LECTURES. She tests over the extreme application of the things she touches on in class. Very word picky on quizzes and free response. Quiz Heavy. I'm an A/B student and I'm having to retake this course over the summer with a different prof so that I can get a grade above a C.
Hard class
everyone chill this class is completely fine. take some ownership for yourself, and you will be fine. You're all freshman who have never had to study before. Time to be an adult, you're in college now little kids, no one is holding your hand anymore!!!! AKA just study, stay up to date with the material, and you'll do well. Seriously. -a junior
Her lectures are soooooo boring. She's a very picky with wording on tests and quizzes. The multiple choice questions of the tests are always asked in the most complicated and confusing way possible. I'm so glad I'm done with her class.
As someone who got an A, I can say it is NOT impossible but VERY difficult. Her lectures are subpar, she's not helpful when you ask questions, and she grades insanely hard. BUT if you are willing to put EVERYTHING you have into this class, then it is doable and you can do decently. Memorize the PPTs, understand the book, and study hard. Good luck.
Everyone chill. 11 AM Genetics with Gerecke was totally fine and honestly a great class. She gives you all the resources you need to get an A. I'm not saying it's not really, really hard but it certainly is possible. Know the PPTs forward and backwards, and read the book to reinforce conceptual understanding. She's a nice person and good teacher.
Not a good professor. Does not explain things adequately. Does not reward students when she sees they are putting in the work. Very hard to do well on her exams. Would not recommend taking a course with her. I had her for cell bio, def would not recommend her for that course.
Do not take this professor unless you want to spend all of your time and effort in this class. Her lectures are based off of PowerPoints that are very vague and her grading is extremely picky. She does not do a good job at answering questions and explanations of her corrections on assignments make no sense. An A is difficult but not impossible
Don't take this class as a natural world, she'll expect you to understand everything as if you've taken many science classes before. Super nice just not a good teacher at all.
Gerecke is a good professor. She's able to explain things better than other bio professors. Her exams are hard and detailed but her lectures are good quality and can learn a lot from them. Everyone says she's mean and she can be intimidating but she was never mean to me and actually always friendly.
VERY tough grader, very few chances to get points in this class. Just know if you take her, you will have to teach yourself in order to succeed!!! She TELLS us to aim for a C- :(
She's passionate about biology and lectures are understandable. She's just a REALLY tough grader.
She is SUCH a tough grader! Her lectures are very much just her talking and going through a powerpoint, which was not helpful to me at all. She assigns quite a bit of homework, which takes way too much effort for 5 points. It's practically impossible to get a 10/10 on her quizzes. Overall, way too harsh of a grader for a 100 level class.
I took Gerecke worried because of so many negative comments on here, but I've honestly thoroughly enjoyed her class! It is simply a difficult class and any professor is going to give a lot of homework and be a tough grader because they want you to succeed. She is a very caring person and really tries to connect with her students.
Dr. Gerecke is one of the kindest professors that I have met on Butler's campus. She is always positive and motivating. She is good at lecturing and explaining labs. Her exams are very doable if you have a good grasp on the material. She has been very accommodating of the switch to online class, and is overall a great person and professor.
Good, friendly professor. Very hard grader though.
Took this class to satisfy my Natural World Credit as a non-science major. This class required a lot of work for which you would not even get a good grade on. Quizzes were hard too. Only 10 questions so missing 2 questions or more will kill your grade. Take something easier not worth the credits.
