Dr. Hollis is probably the coolest teacher I've had since I started college. She has a nose piercing and dresses like a hippie. She is totally funny and silly all the time and admits to it. She leads interesting and entertaining discussions. If you don't mind reading a little, she's an AWESOME teacher 100%!!
Very kind and enthusiastic. She is a fun teacher who is easy to learn from.
This is the best class that I have ever taken. Dr. Hollis is extremely fun, and really cares about her students. She makes interesting points, and if you really try in her class, you WILL improve your writing. She also uses movies like Super Size Me to help illustrate the aims of argument... AWESOME CLASS!
Dr. Hollis is fabulous; she allows students to speak their mind without fear, and she employed a theme (monsters/heroes) in the analysis of lit class, which made it more interesting. Dr. Hollis doesn't write very many comments on papers or journals, but she'll talk with you about your work if you go to her office. I loved her class!
This was my first real English class and I was scared to death. But after a few classes, she made me feel better. She's really funny and kind. She's young and very down to earth about what's interesting. Test were all based on lecture and notes. It was a nice class.
she is such an intelligent and awesome professor. if you attend class regularly and put in some effort, achieving an A will not be difficult.
I loved her class! the theme was monsters/heroes, which was awesome. she never assigned pointless homework, and her tests are not overly difficult. very willing to meet with students and very helpful!
She's awesome!! Totally down to earth, loves to help out, the tests are on stuff we read and went over in class. If you go to class pretty regularly it's not hard to get an A.
Very fun class, the reading was for the most part, easy. Watch out for mood swings though! Maybe a little too down to Earth.
The first week of class I though Prof. Hollis was going to be one of the best instructors I've ever had. However, as the semester wore on, her mood swings were in FULL swing. She talks a lot about her personal life and her "friends" and also is constantly reminding students how intelligent she is. She's young, arrogant, and self-absorbed.
Erin is an awesome professor. Her coursework was heavy-14 novels-but it was worth it. Allows students to speak their minds freely. Discussions were always interesting. Very intelligent and actually had passion for what she was teaching.
I was expecting more from this professor. The class at first appeared that it was going to be very educational and interesting, however, I did not learn as much as I would have liked. The professor spent too much class time talking about herself and allowing class discussions to get out of hand.
A midterm & final (both short answer & essay), a group presentation on a poem & on a chosen passage from a reading, & two 5-page papers (a close reading & a discussion of critical analyses of a read work). Expectations were clear & reasonable; the class was fun & fairly easy. Prof Hollis was helpful, a little "Ivory Tower", but she's OK, take her.
Are you kidding me? I have hardly ever met anyone so full of herself. She tried to be really strict and professional the first day--which was good, and then after that, she was like a college kid. If you really want to get English done right, try Ochoa instead
Hollis is a great professor. She is very smart and her class is a lot of fun because she is really passionate about English. She is helpful and clear and does not give busy work. Shes down to earth and lets everyone speak their mind. I highly recommend her.
Dr. Hollis has a passion for Irish drama, among the British and American plays you will study for this class. You have to read the plays to get the full impact of the class, but is is possible to just focus on the main plays and ignore the rest. There are two papers, 5-8pgs. and a take home final. X-tra credit is also available.Take notes & read!!
I had Hollis for 300 and 212. Her reading load is a bit heavy, but honestly you don't really have to do it. If you ask her for help, she'll help you for hours..even over holidays! She's really funny and real. Her expertise and interest is really in British Lit., so take her for that. Work hard and you'll do fine.
One of the best professors I ever had. The texts she assigned are relevant, interesting, and most importantly, fun. Students who complain about a lengthy reading list should probably not be English majors in the first place. You will be a better person for having taken one of her courses.
NICE!!!
Inexperienced and it shows.
Arrogant, vague, and very full of herself. Would do well as a primary school teacher. I will never take her again.
I took this class because of all the great ratings here. I find that they are not accurate. She is vague on assignments, & gets upset when you ask her to clarify herself. I didn't pay hundreds to take a class about her tatoos, how many times she is published, & watch Buffy? videos. She chewed out 2 students in class about talking, very juvenile.
Don't listen to any of the negative reviews! So much fun! An easy grader! Very opinionated and super passionate!
Erin is a phenomenal professor. There is only enough lecture for her to give us some background information before the discussion, then the remainder of class is discussion, largely student driven. I really enjoyed the fact that she gave us a more ambiguous project in which we had to really decide what we were doing. You have to work for an A.
Horrible instructor. Does not reply to emails or phone calls.
Really wonderful professor. Makes class extremely enjoyable and interesting. More class discussion than lecture.
I am not really sure why the students on here that have negative comments are being censored. My feeling is, if you don't like neg. comments, change your attitude/teaching style so that less people have bad things to say.
Yes, you have to work for your A. It is a lot of reading if you're full-time, it IS a novels class. A bit arrogant, opinionated, but willing to help and she is very knowledgeable. 3 papers, no midterm, no final, takes role.
Okay okay all of you nay sayers, she is not bad. She does seem like a rookie, but maybe that's because she is one? Give her a break. Hollis' classes are interesting and her work is fun. She doesn't demand that much, but go to class, do the reading, do your work and participate and you're golden. She seems to really care.
She's pretty much the most adorable person you will ever meet. The class atmosphere is fun; she is both informative and humorous; her assignments are creative. I'd recommend her for any class ever.
If you like thinking out of the box take Erin Hollis. Her assignments are open ended but that is because she wants you to be creative and do somethinking on your own! If you need complete structure and people to think for you don't take her, but if you want a fun and interesting course take her. She is down to earth and knowledgable.
I have had this professor for several classes. She knows her stuff, but let's students have thier say too! She leaves room for creativity in her assignments. Oh yeah, and she is fun!
Best English professor at CSUF. She is age appropriate and there is this atmosphere she creates that allows ppl to act funny and wierd and as a result GENIUSE! She knows ppl excel in different ways therefore grading participation not only by who talks more. Assiagnments r reasonable and creative. She welcomes individuality! Take her!You won't regre
One of the sweetest, kindest, SMARTEST(beyond Joyce too) professors in the English department. She understands some students don't perform well on essays or tests, so she gives creative options along with traditional, which is cool, not annoying. You'd be hard-pressed to find a teacher that wanted her students to succeed more than Dr. Hollis.
Erin was the first professor I had as a new Grad student in 07. She is warm, open, and extremely supportive. I would NEVER describe her as arrogant. Her door is ALWAYS open. It isn't uncommon to walk by her office and see a few students chatting with her. She knows the material she teaches, and taught me to look at modernism in a different way.
I'm an English major, who has spent countless hours producing detailed analyses of timeless works of literature; yet, in all, I cannot find the words to describe how awesome Dr. Hollis is. She is wonderful. She's like the English Student Whisperer or something. That is to say Dr. Hollis will bring out the best in you. I miss her. Take her.
She is fantastic. Interesting, engaging, and relevant. She actually allows you to be creative! Highly recommended for any class.
I took her class even though I'm not an English major, and I LOVED it! She is such a sweet person. She actually cares about her students, unlike many of the other teachers on campus. She gives different options for projects so you can choose the one that fits your personality best. She is also very helpful and her assignments are clear.
I had expected Advanced College Writing to be very dull, but Hollis made the class interesting. Her teaching style is somewhat playful and informal, so this class was fairly easygoing once I adjusted to the atmosphere. Also, Hollis is willing to proofread your essays herself a day or so before they're due.
Be advised if you are an older student or someone who struggles with papers. She doesn't respond to emails- but she reads them. She will make you find your own way even if your lost and then make you take the C+ every time. VERY Discouraging. :( And I love English! (If you love modernists, take her.)
1) Totally down teacher, she's just awesome all around; 2) no midterm & final, though weekly journal reviews [easy but time consuming], & 3 projects which were easy but again time consuming; 3) they take attendance but don't think they really count it; 4) class was usually fun/engaging. CONCLUSION: take her, whether for this or another class!!!
KNES and health science majors should take her. we have several class days off and she only gives essays not tests. I write like crap and i recieved an A and A- on the first two essays so far. We always get out early too.
Really great professor. She is very helpful in the conferences for each essay. Don't buy the books, borrow from a friend for 1-2 journal entries. She is personable and approachable, loves english and her students. show up to every class, do all the journals, and put effort in to the essays. Easy A.
Took her again lol. 1) Totally down teacher, SO helpful & clear; 2) no midterm/final, but weekly journal reviews [easy but time consuming], & 3 projects which were easy but also time consuming; 3) they take attendance but don't think they really count it; 4) class was usually fun/engaging. CONCLUSION: take her, whether for this or another class!
Very laid back and funny. Easily engages the class. Encourages discussions from the assigned readings. Keeping a journal wasn't my favorite thing, but it is important. No tests, just essays. She's very helpful, so you if you need help just ask. Beware, she is a hard grader.
Amazing teacher! She is funny and engages the class in discussions. She is really helpful with assignments and very forgiving if you have any issues. Take her for any class she teaches!!
This professor required 14 books that was $$$, a big cost for all other cost increases already. She's blunt in her feedback to students in class and mad when students are absent. Attendance counts for her. Just two papers and one project, no mid-term or final. Very hard grader, but will help you.
she's really hard to read, it's different to tell if she likes you or not. but her lectures are fun and she encourages a lot of participation/opinion sharing. overall she's an awesome teacher, and she loves to reference joyce a lot. i'd recommend her as a teacher. the only drawback is the 1001 books she assigns. but at least they're all good reads
I really wanted to like Hollis, but she came off as very pretentious. She was very helpful, though, and I appreciated the discussions that were provoked throughout her class. I would take her again simply based on her knowledge and humor.
She's a great professor and is very hard to read. Also, for the class be expected to read a lot and go broke on all of the books you're expected to buy. Word of warning the essays are hard and watch your grammar but, in the long run it helps you later in the advanced English classes. Also, have your essays checked first before handing it into her.
She is great! Very laid back compared to other English professors. She will challenge you, but it's because she cares and wants you to grow as a reader/writer. She relates well with her students, and will make you laugh every class. Take her, and put in the effort. You will come out of her class feeling like you've really learned something.
Dr. Hollis is very amiable and easy to relate to. My only concern about the class was that we seemed to get stuck on a topic for extended periods of time. Students would argue a topic cyclically, recycling the same information again and again, which was frustrating. On those occasions, I wish Dr. Hollis would have pushed the conversation along.
Her classes are part lecture and very much class discussion based. She will help you if you need it but don't rely on using emails, better to ask in person. I looked forward to going to class the most during the semester. Turn in all the journals and do solid work on your papers and you should do well in the class.
There's a lot of things I like about the classes I've had with her. However, she tends to bring her politics into her lectures fairly often and she is pretty easily distracted. Discussion would often go off topic, especially if a student would respond to the political comments she would make. She also spends a lot of class time taking attendance.
Her classes are pretty easy as long as you do the work. Don't expect her to respond to emails, so go to her during office hours instead. Be warned that she teaches her opinion as fact rather than as opinion. As the previous reviewer said, her politics come into her lectures. The classes she teaches should be called The Politics of Erin Hollis.
Great Class, enjoyed the novels immensely. Was challenged by the reading. Assignments were reasonable. Very helpful in office hours.
Class->Discussion/Lecture. She's organized 4 the most part, but still flexible w/ schedule. She's laid back without being too chill! She's funny, and passionate 4 British Lit! She knows what she wants in students, but allows certain creative freedoms! She's easy if u do ur work & participate! Ask questions if u need help! Take her! U'll learn lots.
I didnt expect myself 2 love this class, I did tho!She opens class w/ an attendance question;I think its a very effective way 2 get our minds awake & alert. **She DOES reply 2 emails, only during certain times of the day as she explains very clearly during the 1st day of class. She raise her opinions, shes allowed to!She doesnt teach them as truth.
I took Hollis 2 semesters in a row and halfway through the 2nd semester I found her classes hard to go to. Yes she's smart and brings in interesting things to think about during the reading. But she talks about herself a lot, and if you're not part of her fan club then getting an A is hard and getting her help during office hrs is even harder.
She was an awesome teacher. You could feel the passion that she felt for the books she was teaching and you learn to love them like she does. She is very friendly and funny. There is a lot of reading but all the books are worth reading anyways! Loved the books that she chose for the course. Definitely taking all her classes. Life changer.
I'm in my 2nd class with Hollis and I think she is a really amazing person. She talks about herself and goes on tangents a lot, but in a good way! There is a lot of reading, but she doesn't force you to talk in class, so not being able to read every time won't kill you. I recommend emailing your paper in early to her for comment on before due date.
She is amazing first and foremost. The novels that she chose are simply beautiful and will change the way you view things. Her class will help you view things differently because of the beautiful person she is. The assignments were fun and she was always there to help in any way she can. everyone should take her because you get a lot out of it.
I loved having her as my professor. She is so helpful and clear and challenges you to look at literature differently. You can tell she loves what she does and she brings a great atmosphere in her lectures.
She is one of the most approachable and straightforward English professors that I have ever taken. She was easier than any lower division English class I ever took. The feedback she gives for rough draft should be followed for an amazing score. I got As on everything. Take her, and you will not regret the grade that you receive.
Dr. Hollis is by far one of the most influential professors I have ever had throughout my entire lifetime. Her passion for literature is deeply admirable. There is extensive reading for this course, and the books that she assigns are far from ordinary. However, you should READ the books! They are worth it! Challenge yourself and enjoy the journey.
Amazing professor! Erin is very fun, and laid back, but we always have the most fascinating discussions in her classes, both in the Harry Potter class and the Graphic Novel class. Both classes do require alot of reading done, but its totally worth it!
Mhmm, this class should bee called the opinions of Erin Hollis and looking through the criticism lens. She will belittle anyone who has an opinion that differs from her own and slam you on it. A student talked about books being sad in her class and she put her on blast saying there was way more than sadness in her books. Be very afraid to volunteer
Taking Dr. Hollis was the best decision I have ever made. She is obviously brilliant, but more importantly, she's empathetic. She will always be there for you, no matter what. She understands that students have a life outside of class. I rediscovered my love of learning thanks to her. I was excited to go to class every day.
I took her Harry Potter class for the Spring. If you want an easy A and class discussions that are beyond simple, take this class. She does not dissect the book, but instead talks very broadly about the subjects like love and Dumbledore's sexuality. I wish she had done more analytical lectures and actually taught something. I learned nothing.
This class was by far the hardest class I ever took. She makes everything so much more difficult than it has to be. She tells you to email drafts to her, instead of coming to her office hour because she doesn't like people staring at her while she reads. This makes it difficult to ask her any immediate questions or have exchanges on the spot.
the class itself is not hard. my review is strictly on how pretentious she is. if you are apart of her fan club you will love her. otherwise if you speak up and say something she doesn't like she will shut you down asap. a guy in class disagreed with an argument of her and she basically said "I'm a scholar I know more than you." yeah real classy
you don't need the textbooks or anything for this class. her assignments can basically be googled and you can write whatever on the weekly journals. she doesn't care. easy A, but the professor is obnoxious and arrogant that its hard to like her. (if you care about that)
TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE WITH HER!!! Super simple class that consists of 6 journals and three essays, as long as you stay on top of everything it is extremely doable. The essays aren't even that long, one of them was only two pages. I recommend anyone to take this class. She is very willing to help you through email and gives very clear directions.
I had taken this professor during the Fall Semester of 2019. After looking back into it, I found it to be interesting. She is very influental and outgoing with passion to poetry, creating long discussions that could last forever. At the same time, she isn't afraid to express her own opinions, which would sometimes create a distraction.
Professor Hollis was a very good professor. Only downside is she does an A B C D grading system so no B+ or B-. I had an 89% and it stayed as a B instead of a B+ on my GPA. I did the winter course in 2.5 weeks and it had 6 journals which are based on completion and 3 essays. Not a lot of room for error but it is an advanced college writing class.
Her Harry Potter class was really enjoyable. It is not necessarily academically challenging, but I still learned a lot through the literature of Harry Potter and enjoyed the assignments, which were mainly creative assignments. Professor Hollis is really caring and and understanding. She makes the class setting super warm and enjoyable.
Professor Hollis is a gem. She is kind and an amazing professor. During the time we live in, it is important that professors are understanding and caring. She is all that and more. The class consists of journals and discussions and 3 projects. They do not feel like a chore. It is fun and you actually learn. Professor Hollis is a must take!
This was her senior seminar class and she was a really wonderful professor. She is very intelligent regarding the subject matter of the class and incredibly accommodating. There's weekly discussions, weekly readings of novels that are extensive, a personal assignment, a rough draft, and your final paper. The final paper is a lot, don't get behind!
When I say I would die for her, I mean it. My grandfather died while I was taking her class. She was empathetic and understanding. She pushes you to make a more in-depth analysis than "this book was sad". All the books she picks are important for a reason. She is kind and funny. She cares about her students. She encourages creativity.
Took the summer course. Consisted of 6 (1-2 page) journals, 7 discussion posts, and 3 papers/project. You get credit for doing journals/discussions. Papers are short. The longest was 5-7 pages. 1st paper is a narrative about your relationship with writing, 2nd is a resume/cover letter, and 3rd is a proposal. Easy. She eased my fear of writing.
I love prof. Hollis! She makes everyone feel heard and is very kind. Several short readings each day, broad variety of authors. Class is dedicated to discussion of pieces and is very interesting to hear varying views of classmates. Weekly journal, 1-2 pages based on readings. 3 essays, she gives helpful feedback. Would 100% take this class again!
Hollis is an amazing professor. She's super sweet and caring and truly wants students to succeed and engage with the material. There's weekly poems to read and journals, which are super easy and fun, two essays, and one creative project too. The class is so enjoyable and will definitely make you better at analyzing poetry. Take her if you can!
The most amazing professor I've ever had. She's so kind and considerate, the class is very simple and easy to follow. She honestly grades on how hard you try, I'd say it's impossible not to get an A.
I was denied into a GA Assistantship and she sat on the oanel that denied me into the program. Then she told my roommate about it before I even got the denial letter. It was ALL intended to be hurtful. She , Irena Praitis, and Sheryl Fontaine got rid of me. If you have problems with this professor, report her to the HR on campus. His name is Tom F
opinionated & blunt -not disrespectful/degrading towards student opinions/points of views that opposed her own beliefs - advocates for herself+views Acknowledges students dont have to agree with her +grades won't be effected if so, (I personally think people need to stop getting so offended by things that were never intended to be offensive).
Purchasing "required" books not necessary, all poems can be found online, prof. is great, openly opinionated but when it comes to poetry she knows what shes talking about & is passionate about her career, the english department, & students.12, 1-2 page journals, 3, projects 100pts each, participation based on in-class discussion/attendance.
Professor Erin is so cool to have, and definitely gives different kinds of assignments that you would expect from an English class. She's very fun and keeps it interesting in class. I'm definitely taking classes from her again. *in full disclosure I took her for English 388, but the option wasn't available when I tried to select it*
Without a doubt the most easiest class I've ever taken. She truly does not ask much of her students, just that you try your best. Most accommodating professor I've ever had, as she is VERY lenient on extensions. Very helpful when it comes to picking your classes, and graduation requirements. Entertaining, and supportive. Thank you professor.
Erin was the teacher that actually got me back into reading so massive props there. Her class is honestly a breeze if you participate well, as many of the assignments build on the lecture. Much of the course is analyzing literature and Erin is very open minded. Always willing to critique work + provide extensions. Take her!!
An excellent choice for winter session if you have to fulfill the advanced college writing requirement. Obviously a lot of writing, but not super difficult, and she's there to help, so contact her when necessary. For example, feedback given on a rough draft, resulting in better grade & reduced my fear of writing while I often struggle with writing.
This review is specifically for Hollis as the Humanities department head. She's very condescending and rude, definitely has favorites, if you are not one of them it will be obvious. I've actively avoided taking this lady's classes because of how rude she was to me as an advisor. CSUF should really demote her and promote someone who isn't rude af.
No exams, just 3 projects that were interesting to work on! I am a first year and I'm glad I took her.
Professor Hollis is amazing! She's clear on her grading, gives great feedback, and very understanding. I always looked forward to the comments she leaves when grading. I'm so glad I took her class.
Dr. Hollis is amazing! I took her winter 2024 ENGL 301 class and it was a two week intersession course, so it was really fast paced. However, she made it very doable and was there to support us throughout the whole semester. She is very acommodating and kind. I would recommend her class to anyone thinking of taking this course! :)
A super easy class with a passionate yet polarizing professor. Just show up, complete basic assignments, and you're guaranteed an A. unstuck ai and a free online poetry archive make this class a breeze.
Professor Hollis is great! She actually cares about what she is teaching and makes class fun and entertaining. Never made anyone feel dumb about sharing their thoughts. Class just has reading, a weekly journal, and 3 projects that arent too bad. Would definitely take again
I've taken other courses with her and I loved them. There is no exams, three projects. Easy grader and there's no rubric. She lets you be as creative as possible. She's very funny and she isn't tough on grades. You are guaranteed an A if you do the assignments. Def recommend her for any class of hers.
Erin has to be one of my favorite professors at CSUF. She's super funny, caring, respectful, & brings great energy to class every time. Although we had a lot of readings, she's intentional w her subjects, & brings diversity to her class. She has a creative project, which are really fun, & a paper. She's a pretty easy grader, but does expect effort!
Pretty straightforward class. Weekly journals and readings with 3 projects total. Hollis is very caring and understanding, and makes class discussions very engaging. Class mainly consists of about 70% discussing the reading, so you will get more out of the class if you do the readings. If you haven't taken a class with professor hollis, you should!
