borrrrring, way too into history, not nice at times
shes reeeeally into history, tells students she is there for help but i dunno
not helpful, strange class
too much work for a survey level 1 class, way to hard to follow lectures!
Her workload is excruciating, and way too many paper handouts, loves her own voice
a lot of work, short papers due every class, BUT i noticed my writing was 10x better at the end of the semester and i got a well deserved A. she is the best history prof i have ever had.
Very excruciating, but she's a good teacher, knows her stuff and makes it interesting

One of the only teachers here that ACTUALLY listen to the students! Her tests are easy (if you study) and she is a fair grader.
she sucks dont take her
The work load is way to heavy for a GER. She is pretty annoying. If history is your major then maybe she'd be ok but if not, try someone else because she is way too into the subject.
heavy work load, easy grader, your opinion does count! knows her stuff!!
Class consists of arriving on time, handing out worksheets, and taking notes on lectures. Homework usually is to sum up material from readings. Tests are all from study guides. If you do the reading, it's really easy, she gives alot of extra help!
I loved her. She explains things well, and she gets really excited and it's fun to watch her. There is a lot of work, but it really isn't that hard.
I think shes a great teacher... I've never really been too interested in History until this class. She gives a good amount of work, but it makes you understand more.
She's an awesome teacher. She expects alot but she really knows her material. She's a fair grader but this class carries alot of work and the lectures are somewhat boring. I would take her again
terrible professor and work load is crazy for a GER. she might be good if you love history but if you don't stay clear.
These opinons are a real turn-around from the last set. She is terrible and that's that. She acts like were in elementary school and gives an unfair amount of work for a GER. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! You will regret it.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE
I would not recommend her to my worst enemy.
aweful
WORST TEACHER YOU WILL EVER HAVE IN YOUR ENTIRE TIME HERE. SHE TREATS US LIKE WE ARE 10. TOO MUCH WORK FOR A GER. WAAAAAAY TOO MUCH! DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!
very hard and boring
all essay tests, u have to find the relationship between terms, awful and impossible, do not take this class unless u have to
SHE IS CRAZY. WAY TO MUCH WORK FOR A GER. 131 IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AS A 400 LEVEL CLASS!!!WHATS WRONG WITH THAT PICTURE?!?! SHE NEVER GIVES YOU BACK TEST, PAPERS OR MAP QUIZZES ON TIME, SO YOU DON'T KNOW HOW YOU'RE DOING!!! I SUGGEST ANOT

Her class was terrible! In addition to the loads of work, she personally made me feel uncomfortable with some remarks she made to me, I also wouldn't not even reccommend her to my worst enemy
No Comments
Hate her!! It's fine that she assigns such a heavy workload, but she is NOT clear AT ALL on what she wants from you. Treats a GER 100 level class like it's a 400 level class full of history majors. SHE DRIVES ME INSANE! AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
shes a bit intense....knows alot but needs to undersatnd that no one in the calss wants to be there we are all taking it bc we have to
Absolutely amazing teacher. Requires lots of reading, but it is interesting material, and she addresses many different topics in really good lectures. I'd recommend her to anyone who actually wants to LEARN lots of new things.
I would never take her again! She definately gives way to much work for a GER. She isn't helpful at all, and shes mean. She will stare at you if you walk in the door a minute late and make you feel like an idiot. Do not take her. Shes mean and hard!!!
Took her for Latin American Women and Gender. Absolutely loved her class. She knows her stuff ! Dr. O'Connor is very helpful, and class participation is big. A lot of work/reading was required, but if you do the work, she is very fair
Take her class only if you want to fail. If you expect to pass don't take any class with her.
VERY INTENSE!!! Very knowledgeable, but super intense. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS VERY VERY VERY INTERESTED SUBJECT. She is a very nice person, but is very tough, with daily assignments for a 400 level course. I do not recomend her or course
Very intense class- hated daily assignments .She knows her stuff(and is well aware of that fact!) but doesn't understand that a 400 level class means UNDERGRAD!!
She was not that bad of a teacher, yet she skips around in time periods, confuses students really easily, and is strict on not being a min late. Alot of written papers, and likes to email you the night before class with changes to assignments.
Interesting professor, she can be hard at grading and gives you a ton of work, she pushes you, a lot of writing in her upper level courses, doesnt take well to arguements about her ideas either
pleeease do not take this teacher if you want a good grade!!! she is very unreasonable, cocky, and pretty much SUCKS. she had me rewrite a paper that i got a B- on, and after i spent FOUR more hours on it, she gave me a B. most wasted 4 hours of my life!
Intense! she does expect a lot so don't take the class if you are not willing to work but you will learn a lot! I got an A in her seminar and it was the most rewarding grade I've ever gotten because i knew i worked hard for it.
very difficult but worth it. Intense course with lots of work, so if you are not willing to study hard and read a lot dont take this course. VERY kind teacher, willing to give extra help. Gives specific study guides.
Their is alot of work for this class, but if you keep up with it you should be fine. Her syllabus is very detailed and she is willing to answer your questions in any way she can. If you dislike history this might not be a class for you.
she is awesome. shes really hard and talks really fast, but shes really excited which makes the class a lot better.
She's great, She's a very hard teacher, it was a hard class, but I becamse very interested in the class, she makes you like History if you never did. Great class, give it a chance, if you do the work and study it pays off.
She is awesome, but she wont be back next semester because she is pregnant. She is hard, but she is not a hard grader. The only assignments you actually have to do is document analysis. She gives great review sheets before midterms and finals so if you know your stuff from it, you will do good!
fell asleep...
GER Intro class is harder than most Senior Level History Classes. Very good, but soooo difficult for a GER.
bad tempered, unclear and full of herself. papers aren't too hard though. really selective with material... focuses on nothing but china and central/south america... mostly skipped over europe, africa, north america, etc. in a WORLD history class... is also a femi-nazi and will test on irrelevant BS just because a woman was involved (and will then skip over things like the chapters on The Persian Empire and South Africa which had far more impact). BAH!

Her teaching style is confused. She jumps around way too much. She is not very nice to some people in the class, and definitely shows favoritism. There is a lot of work in the class which is not a problem, but her lectures are almost useless when studying for her exams.
a lot of notes! hard tests! she is so into history. doesnt stop talkin about how great her kids are. doesnt like to answer students questions bc she says theyre "not important." she can be nice one on one but overall shes very strict. if you're late she sometimes asks why and dont talk to someone during lecture because she'll yell at you.
not too bad-be ontime and dont talk- just take as much notes as possible though it can be hard- she skips around a lil. tests not too bad just study at least 2 nights ahead of time- u dont realize how much there is until u start- follow the s.guide! only a few short answer papers- not hard at all. be specific in ALL work-takes off.
Not an easy class, but is a pretty easy grader. Talks very fast, hard to follow sometimes. If you come to class and take good notes will do well. Gives out really good review sheets for mid term and final. She's a very strict about coming to class on time and not being disruptive during class time.
so particular. she gets offended by the drop of a hat. you have to walk on eggshells or else she'll think your personally offending her on purpose.
Prof O'Connor is highly professional, and easy to understand true she gives allot of work. But, that is to be expected, after all it is a college upper level history course, not nursery school.
Interesting course. Go to class, lectures are fast-paced so ur hand may be sore after notes but if theyre good u shouldnt really need to use ur textbook. However, you DO need to do the primary source readings, which arent too long and class discussions on them are usually interesting. Exam aren't too bad and your well prepared on what to expect.
she has a tendency to scold you like your a child. I was scolded in such a way. I cant remember the last time a teacher wagged their finger in my face and reprimanded me. as much as you learn, she's kinda embarrasing. she has no qualms with treating you like a 5 year old. "is that clear young lady".
go to class, take good notes, study for a few hours for a test and youll be fine. tests are always the same and before the first test she gives you an exact replica of what the test is going to look like. she takes attendance everyday and you have to go or shell fail you. take notes/pay attention or shell single you out in class. take notes-easy A
NOT BAD, ALOT OF READING AND WRITITNG ASSIGMANTS, LECTURS AND CLASS DISCUSSIONS BUT IT IS HELP FULL 2 MIDTERM PAPERS AND 1 FINAL PAPER SHE IS WILLING TO LISTEN TO STUDENTS, LOVES CLASS PARTICIPATION, IT IS A LOT OF WORK BUT WHAT DO U EXPECT FOR A 400 LEVEL CLASS SHE KNOWS HER STUFF AND DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS IVE HAD HER 2X ALREADY
This women is a decent teacher but is tough to listen too. Don't bother showing up late or anything because she'll chew you out. Very boring class, easy but boring. I took it as an elective because of my history major and couldn't have been more disappointed. 3 tests that require at least a couple hours prep each, LOTS of readings and class work.
Specializes in Latin Amer. history. Daily homework writing assignments. Excessively time consuming class preparation needed. Keeps students on their toes. Allows two make up assignments. Two essays on broad, difficult topics. Insightful approach to women's history under different gov'ts. Great lectures. Helps review rough drafts.
Latin American History. Awesome. She's a great teacher. She does require a lot of work, but she is able to cover all of it, never gives too much work that can't be covered in class. Requires homework every night, but short assignments, definetely doable. Very good.
Incredible woman. I love her style of teaching, very tough but really sparks growth and is willing to foster it as well. Does not use notes, entirely well versed in history - great professor is you are open to a mature academic standpoint
very good professor. knows her stuff. explains material very well. assignments arent too bad at all, tests tend to be pretty big. always more than willing to help no matter what
A very nice person. She knows her stuff, history is important to her. She wants (justifiably so) respect. If you areone of those arrogant students who walks in chronically late, don't take her. She is slightly standoffish to guys, slightly disorganized, and doesn't narrow down test questions for review but if you pay attention she's great.
She is VERY intelligent and as long as you take good notes you will do fine on exams. I didn't open one of the books at all and with notes alone I got a B on the first exam. 3 exams all together and a few response papers in between, which is good so you have a chance to improve grade if need be. Just respect her and pay attention, you'll do fine.
FAVORITE professor. She is so sweet and very intelligent. She knows her stuff. She is unbelievably organized. 3 exams and a couple response papers. Always emails you an outline and get back to yours promptly. So sweet!! I would recommend her to anybody!
Women in Latin America, great class! Didn't know what to expect but wasn't disappointed. No text, just short books to read. 3 big papers and some response papers on readings. She is great! SO passionate about the subject and a VERY sweet lady. Loves to talk feminism and about her 2 children! would strongly recommend her!
Class is easy enough if you take good notes. Don't expect to get out early she can talk for days. And will never finish a lecture on time.
She knows her stuff. Talks really fast. If you don't pay attention and take good notes then your screwed for tests. Only 3 tests but study guides are fairly long and not all material is on tests. I would not recommend her to anyone.
I hated history before Dr. O'Connor's class, but now I actually don't mind it that much. She is an EXTREMELY tough professor, though. Lots of reading and never finishes a lecture on time. She always gives out a study guide, so if you use that and study from class lectures, you'll do fine on the exams. She helps a lot during her office hours, too.
She is very dedicated to the material. I have to say she gave the heaviest work load that I have ever had in college. It is hard to tell what your grade is because she doesn't give back papers quickly if at all. Theirs hours of reading involved when taking the class and multiple assignments. I'd say only take her if you need to.
she's a teacher that you really don't know what your going to get when you go to class. She is very dedicated to the material and is always willing to help. Very particular on what she wants for her papers and quizzes. Even though she is a tough grader she is a nice person who is always willing to help
One of the best history professors at BSU. She's really funny and actually cares about her students. Reading is required because there are weekly short response papers based on the readings. Also: class discussions, lectures, and 3 papers (two 5-7 & one 8-10). If you do the work, it's a really enjoyable class! If you're a history major, take her!
Love her! Though I'm a history major it could be biased but she's so helpful and makes the class interesting.. Definitely recommend her
Super friendly and knows the material inside and out. History is obviously a passion for her. She uses every minute of class time effectively and always answers questions. Exams are a little confusing. Would definitely recommend.
Do not take her class. She assigns a lot of reading every time the class meets. She is very tough on the response papers. I will never take any classes with her again.
Nice person, but class was very tough. I don't mind putting in the work, but it this class it was nearly impossible. Talks down to students, and get mad if you have a different opinion. Would never ever take again.
Great professor, knowledgeable and professional. If you are thinking of extending your career in history she is a great way to prepare yourself. Very nice and approachable, will grade you tough but you will be satisfied when your work is complete. 1010 would take her class again.
good teacher, but way too passionate about gender studies and identity, and God forbid you disagree with her. not much room for debate. she will work you and you will learn, but it can be a pain if you dont care for the subject. if you want easy, look elsewhere
She is very helpful with whatever you need. She does assign a lot of reading and some have response papers to write after reading them. There were 3 tests and 3 major essays she gives you a study guide and she will meet with you if you have any questions. All lecture the entire class and it can get boring at times but I would recommend her.
I think she would do better teaching a Spanish class. There is absolutely no organization to the course and she gives way too much homework. Sometimes we all wonder whether or not were taking a spanish language class or a history one. Way too much work for a boring class. She is extremely enthusiastic about the subject and highly knowledgeable.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life. I would not recommend this class to my worst enemy. If you are looking for an easy F, take this class!!!! BEWARE!!!!
I love Erin. If you have a chance to take his class then don't pass it by! He is truly kind and caring, and his subtle humor is great for anyone with a willingness to enjoy. He presents the material very simply and easily. I never struggled with the course but I was constantly learning. This was quite possibly the best class and professor ever.
She'll keep you till minutes past class. A little too passionate about her job. Doesn't write anything down, you have to listen and put it down on notes fast. Wouldn't take if had the option.
I loved having Dr. OConnor for my pro seminar for my history major. She really cares about her students learning and focuses on broadening your history experience. A lot of outside the class reading and response papers for every reading. Research paper also. Textbooks are necessary! Would recommend taking her if youre really interested in history
Best lecturer at BSU, really makes history come alive and her passion for the subject is contagious. She doesnt just tell you the timeline of history, but digs deeper to find lessons and insight. She cares about her students and is always available. Sit front row! If you like history even a little bit youll thoroughly enjoy her lectures.
Always love Dr. OConnors class. She is so passionate about her job and it shows through her teaching. Always accessible outside of class and easy to talk to about anything. She is always up for discussions in her office on confusion or clarification of her expectations. Would highly recommend if you want to learn about Latin America!
The class I took was colonial Latin America studies. O'Connor gives you both tests and large written assignments, plus constant reading. The textbook she makes you buy is co-written by her, so yes she is profiting off of you personally. She is very good when it comes to helping students, but the way she structures her class is comparable to trash.
O'Connor is a history teacher, however she teaches like an english teacher. By this I mean she over analyzes EVERYTHING. She will spend too long analyzing something that you'll forget what she's talking about. She always goes over the class limit by a few minutes, and will never, ever end class early. This class was the most stressful in my 3 years
Shes horrible and thinks that her class is the only class your taking. Nice women but just a stressful and tough class. Take someone else if you can
Very knowledgable! I thought the class was a little difficult for a 100 level class but she really makes sure you retain the information. Very nice lady. Takes attendance every class. You will never leave class early though, sometimes lectures past class time. Will do fine as Long as you go to class and take notes.
Dr. O'Connor is a very good Professor. She makes you work for your grade but that is how it should be. She is a very nice lady and very helpful outside of class. I recommend her 100%.
Really enjoyed History / Culture of Mexico, Dr O'Connor is an asset to BSU. Really enjoyed the readings and essay prompts. Great class highly recommend taking it
Dr Erin O'Connor is an inspiration to me. I have taken Dr O'Connor both Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 and I need to mention how well structured her lectures are and the course reading selections. I am a big fan of her journal assignments as I felt that helped me immensely as a student to understand the content. She is remarkably intelligent as well
Genuinely the most irritating professor I have ever had. EVERY single class talked 3-5 minutes past class time while knowing exactly what time it was. Thought her class was our only class and gave so much reading and extra information from talking so much it made it so difficult to learn. SUCH a hard grader for no reason. Takes things too serious.
Very caring and passionate professor but she gave a lot of reading and journal assignments. IMO she was a harsh grader, but I also wasn't really interested in the class or the content. She always talked after class ended and during her lectures PAY ATTENTION and take notes!! She posts her slideshows but they don't help at all so take notes.
I think the ratings are harsh for her. She is super passionate, and caring and is easily accessible outside of class. Lots of lecturing and readings, however, they are interesting and she loves class discussion. She does not let you leave until the last minute and sometimes lectures past the bell. Do the work and you'll be fine.
Prof. O'Connor is passionate but can be harsh. Her lectures are worth attending, but the heavy reading and assignment load make this a challenging course. unstuck study and the free textbook are helpful for preparing.
I don't understand how Dr. O'Connor has such low ratings. She is passionate, kind, funny, and a great educator. She assigns a fair amount of work and has clear grading criteria. She is always available outside of class if you have questions. Her work isn't easy but it helps develop necessary skills for students. Hands down 1 of my fav professors.
Also caring! But you can only pick three, and respected is more important. She is an actual academic, and an excellent educator. Has edited numerous serious publications RE - Latin America and more. Fun, intelligent, fair grader, gracious person overall. Take her classes. You may read a lot, but you'll learn a lot of valuable history.
Good professor and she explains things well. The only gripe I have is that she tends to go over the class time. For students that have class right after it, it can become quite the annoyance. But this should not discourage anyone from taking the class. You'll learn a lot. She's a great choice if you care about the quality of your education.
Incredibly engaging and passionate lecturer. Can tell she cares about her subject and her students. Readings for each class and journal posts on readings about every other class. 3 papers with pre-write assignments to boost grade as well. You are expected to work hard, but not completely overwhelmed with things to do. Strongly recommend her class!
Lectures are often but very engaging. She is always willing to stop to clarify or answer questions. She gives lots of feedback for papers and is easily available for questions. Homework is reading and journals and is not too difficult. She loves history and cares about her students.
Dr. O'Connor is very nice, and you can tell she is passionate about the subject she teaches and teaching in general. She is an extremely tough grader, but will give you good feedback on where to improve. There are lots of readings and journals to go along with them; she waits to grade as long as possible. Class can get boring, so prepare for that.
Loved this class. Makes a tough subject (for many without a background in Latin American history) manageable. Grade based on two papers, journals, participation, and a final. She is a fair grader and I felt expectations were clear. Lots of group work, but plenty of lectures too. There can be lots of reading, but it is an upper level history course.
